AMAZING FOOD!
It's a great pub. The staff are friendly and helpful, but the food is the star here. The lovely chef knows her stuff! Try the buttermilk pork belly with maple and apple sauce and bubble squeak. It's the best main course you'll find in Durham right now!
P. C.
Good choice of food on the menu. We only paid £47.00 for four meals, all of which were hot and delicious. The beer was good and the staff were helpful and friendly.
The only downside was that it was difficult for my disabled friend to manage the few stairs to and from the ladies.

Great cosy and welcoming pub! Park just opposite for free in the evening, or near now closed DLI for free.
Very stylish decoration, giving new life to the vintage furniture, yet not looking shabby. The staff is very helpful. Can make you your favourite drinks, alcoholic or just very good quality tea. Haven't tried food yet, but I shall soon.
Love this place!

Staff are really friendly, but it was like doing a shop at iceland food wise. Everything is clearly cooked from packaged frozen goods. Lovely place to call for a drink, but the food is pretty terrible. Shame as it used to be really fresh, professional chef style menu & food. Obviously been taken over reasonably recently by tight new owners that don't care about quality food

Lovely pub. Very cosy, nice atmosphere. Food was lush. The girls serving/waiting were very friendly. Will definitely be back :)

We booked a table thinking it'd be so busy, unfortunately we were the only couple in the restaurant area.
The staff were friendly & attentive, the pizzas were tasty albeit a tad expensive. The menu only offered pizza, had we realised that before our visit we probably would have chosen elsewhere.
The chairs are are little uncomfortable as they've no pads/ padding.
Will we visit again? Mmm, maybe?
If a more varied menu is on offer & maybe some quiet music in the background to give a better ambience.

I’ve never been inside this establishment before and here’s my review from my visit. It’s detailed because I believe it deserves a chance! 4.6/5 overall and somewhere that does deserve your money.
Service Quality 5* - I interacted with 4 members of staff today, all were very pleasant and friendly. They cleared worked in union with each other and there was no overlap / missed gaps in service.
Venue Quality 5* - The space was immaculate, welcoming and clean. I’m usually first to become dismayed by
Value for money 5* - £31 for a tremendous amount of food, one bottled cider and one soft drink. Very good value!
Beverages 5* - There was a lot of choice on offer. We had one bottled drink and one drink from tap, both were great. My partner is fussy with post mix soft drinks but this one hit his approval.
Food 3* - I really really wanted this to be good. I was rooting for it, but there were a few fall downs. *Disclaimer* could easily have been remedied if I’d brought it up with staff but I personally wasn’t feeling great today and wasn’t up for the interaction. Turkey was lovely, I must say. So many places muck this up and serve dry sandpaper but it was very nice here today. The potato’s (mash and roasties) tasted nice but the roasties weren’t warm and hadn’t been brought back up to heat very well. The veg was very nice, not mushy, and still full of flavour. Pigs and blankets were cold. The gravy was the thickest I’d seen, and a bit lumpy and salty, certainly not inedible, i did eat it, but it was a fall down for me and I believe the plate was cold on delivery, which meant anything that was lukewarm/cold already, had no chance of surviving to the end of the meal.
I’m didn’t hate but I wasn’t going to write home about the food. I do want to say though these are my opinions and that another diner in the room said they thoroughly enjoyed their roast so definitely do give this place a try.
I ended up here by accident after walking out of Ramside because their food looked hideous and both of us didn’t feel like we’d made a bad decision by to Garden House Inn.
N. B.
We had a lovely meal there. 1st. Time we had been there although I have passes it many times. We chose to sit inside although there was plenty seats outside. Very friendly staff and parking opposite on the road was free after 2pm.
C. B.
Food was ok, we were there for a Christmas meal and our party was split across two very cramped tables while another group had a lovely long table, which was a little annoying. Soup was vile and flavours completely unidentifiable- everybody at our table ended up leaving it uneaten (which for some reason didn't even warrant a query from the waiter)- while the rest of the food was ok, but a little pretentious with relatively little substance. Overall though, the service was decent and the waiter friendly, although it was hard to serve our food with us so cramped up.
Parking was very very crowded and difficult to get to- I think next time we'd just park on the street and pay rather than try and squeeze into the tiny carpark.
Generally though, I think if you avoid special occasions/busy periods it might be a pleasant place to visit once in a while.

Sooooo I noticed that the pub was open in passing in the middle of last week. Wondered down on Saturday for a look.
I think its fair to say that there have been some changes and the menu was pretty comprehensive as well.
The pub was warm (not always the case previously) and the food we had was not bad (Rump steak/All day breakfast).
As with anything new the staff were still getting up to speed but it has potential and therefore I will watch how it develops once it gets more custom.

My husband and I live in the city but haven't been to Garden House pub for yrs but it had recently been doneup & new management so we went & sat in beer garden for Sunday lunch with our chihuahua dog.I had the turkey & my hubby had the pork-lovely,also as many yorkies u want-thanks to the chef for a very tasty meal.We will be back but this time will walk up & leave the car behind and have a few more bevies thanks Polly and Nick & Zacypoos.x

Great pub in Durham with lots quirky old furniture and decor. We went there for Sunday Lunch and weren't disappointed. The roast beef literally fell apart on your plate. It was served with lots of tasty vegetables, Yorkshire Pudding and lovely gravy. The sticky toffee for dessert was without doubt the best I've ever had. Highly recommended and good value.
k. d.
Pleasant enough place, nice staff, reasonably priced food. Unfortunately like most places nowadays it just lacks people 🤔
N. O.
Was recently served the worst pint of Guinness I’ve ever had. Sent it back 3 times and ended up giving in and just drinking it. Also charged £3.00 for a kids blackcurrant and water. Have been coming here for years and had some memorable times, including our sons Christening party but, to see it decline like this is very sad. Won’t be making much of an effort to go again, in the future, which is a real shame
P. T.
Food was amazing. Triple cooked chips were very nice too, We were well looked after by pearl and the team. Lovely atmosphere and delicious home cooked food.
A. M.
This place is the quintessential charming English Bed and breakfast . The staff are very friendly and helpful. It is a short walk into town and even shorter walk to the train station. I really enjoyed my stay here.
L. F.
Fab food great offer of 2 steaks and bottle of wine for £30. Service little slow but worth the wait. Would go again.
j. s.
Pleasant staff, good range of beers. It wasn't busy. They forgot about our first drinks order and had to be reminded after 20 minutes. I will go back and hope for better service next time.
A. a. P. T.
Lovely quirky pub, staff very friendly, we stayed over, room needed attention, especially the en suite, toilet wouldn't flush, shower head missing, no breakfast, we found out in the morning that the place was closing and we were the last guests, another covid hit business 😒
A. D.
Lovely little B&B with great craft beers, easily accessible from the town. Rates however not competitive and staff not very attentive during the disappointing breakfast...
S. C.
What a great little find … we knew it would be busy with the sun out but this place wasn’t busy. The food was amazing … we honestly couldn’t pick a fault with any of the dishes!!! Staff were attentive and the dog was happy with his water bowl :)
P. C.
Good food nice atmosphere and friendly staff
D. B.
Sat here now in the garden house inn. Just had a sundays dinner and it was perfect. Tasted unreal. Meat was spot on veg was perfect and gravy tasted like heaven. Ive even drank the rest out ther gravy cup. 😁
L. O.
Lovely staff, good food, good value
J. E.
Really friendly welcome, looked after us and 2 dogs as well. Food was really nice and plenty of it! Top class pub 😊
P. B.
This place is special. If you like food with plenty of flavour and are in Durham you should pay a visit, and make sure you are hungry when you go. Since I discovered it I have eaten there four times never been disappointed. Pub favourites sit beside more exotic dishes. It is really cosy and full of atmosphere on a cold winter evening and the staff are friendly and welcoming. I can't wait to go back.
R. W.
Food is always spot on here, chef cooks a great steak. Bar can be a bit slow but drinks are good quality and has large selection of spirits and lagers. Always accomodating of our group bookings. Great that dogs are allowed in bar.
C. M.
Stayed for two nights our room was clean and comfortable but the bed valance was very stained and the general decor was shabby... The front terrace was nice and the bar very cosy... Tried there fish and chips highly recommended but we got small fishes and did not think that the portion justified the 14£ price. All the staff especially the breakfast and cleaner were lovely top quality breakfast! would stay again
C. A.
Family room is spacious and well looked after. Curtains do let in a lot of light come sunrise. I brought a blackout blind with me but there is two windows but a supplied blanket and pillows helped. Food was really good. Would definitely visit again. Really like Durham 😀
J. B.
An excellent bar/ restaurant with fantastic outdoor seating area. I only called in as a passing cyclist to get my water bottle filled up and they couldn’t have been more pleasant, they even put ice in it . Many thanks.
M. D.
Only been once but loved it.
M. H.
We stayed here for two nights. Great staff. Great room: contemporary decoration, best shower I've ever had in a hotel, quiet rooms, nice and warm. Goff food. Nice breakfast included. We'll be going again.
D. P.
Went with some people after work, had a good chat and a burger. One of the guys bought me a pint, which was nice. Burger was quite good too, and not badly priced at about twelve quid. Would definitely come again another day.
M. G.
Oh god, the food is amazing, I can't even describe it. I didn't expect the fish and chips to go above and beyond, but afterwards I ended up having an extra scotch egg and Korean pork, just to have my increasing expectations beaten every time. Worth every penny.
C. M.
Heard there was new Chef and it has been revamped. Loved Food from here prior to going. Could not Fault it. Raining outside you step into warm fire roaring welcoming place to shelter. Staff welcoming helpful. Food Menu looked good Sunday roasts were spot on. Portion size value for money, Presentation etc...
Highly recommended. We will be back. Definitely. Our Visit was back in May. Wet Sunday 3rd May.
P. J.
Friendly staff, everyone was helpful and polite which is refreshing. nice location close to city but far enough away to be quiet. Food was overpriced for what there was. Rooms were clean and comfy just need a little TLC. Good breakfast
S. J.
Love this place!!
Cosy and quirky setting, welcoming, friendly staff and amazing food!!! Will be going everytime I am up here ....
D. B.
Popped in for a quick pint. Wife liked the shais long and the rocking chair next to the real open fire.
C. S.
We stayed here for 3 nights and had a meal here on one of them, food was excellent, rump steak and monk fish on the menu, both were great. Cooked breakfast was nice and set us up for the day, only down side was the squeaky bed, was obviously known as a problem, because when we mentioned it to a member of staff, and gave the room number, she said it probably needs tightening again
L. S.
Not great, no menus ready, staff a little unprepared and my meal was only lukewarm when served, although my friend enjoyed hers. Not somewhere I'd rush back to, which is disappointing given I'd had really positive feedback from others who had eaten here.
T. R.
Nice atmosphere, friendly bar staff and food servers, good standard range of drinks. Small set menu, a little pricey and could offer more for special diets. Food is always hot, and to a good standard however.
D. R.
Nice food, large sandwiches from the lunch menu. Service was OK, nothing special. We were able to sit out on the decking in the sun which was lovely. Parking can be problematic as the car park is very small (about 6 cars) but there is pay and display parking available down the street, but this can be quite busy. This is 30p/half hour.
a. r.
Very nice cosy place great ambience great food would highly recommend
A. P.
I like the food here; a limited menu and on the high end of reasonably priced - the specials board is always worth checking! - but it's always cooked and presented to the same high standard. The team are always friendly, polite and helpful.
A. P.
Really properly actually amazing food.
The Korean pork and the lobster sandwich were divine. Inventive food without being try-hard. Staff were great too. Absolutely worth the trip out of the city centre.
L. S.
Lovely atmosphere in here and a nice selection of bars snacks. Apparently the food is great but didn't eat on this visit. A limited selection of beers let's the place down. Could definitely do with changing these up.
R. H.
Decent menu and range of drinks. Pleasant atmosphere and good service. Excellent fish and chips. The mushy peas, however, were blitzed frozen peas: up here in the north that counts as a crime.
C. P.
Lovely place and food. The fireplace was lit which was nice and cosy, but far too hot for lunch time in October. We asked to move, which wasn't a problem. Shame because the fire place was lush. We'll be back, but maybe when it's colder.
J. D. B.
I have always liked this pub and remember going when I was a student. Whenever I visit now, I always wish I lived closer, so I could call in more often. This gem of a pub is great for all ages and is just as comfortable if you are on your own or with friends or family. Please give it a go.
D. R.
Have known this pub for years and have eaten there many times. Today I had Ox cheeks which were absolutely delicious. Sadly the curly Kale and the beetroot wasn't cooked enough and the Service wasn't very attentive. Also we found the drinks were expensive. Shame, because I was really looking forward to it.
P. C.
Nice pub on the edge of Durham.
W. M.
Called in for a coffee here with my Mum and her dog this afternoon while visiting Wharton Park. Really friendly, welcoming staff, lovely coffee and they allow dogs in the bar area. Absolutely loved the decor and atmosphere. We plan to return and sample the delicious sounding menu.
S. B.
Excellent food in a delightfully posh pub, with candlelit tables in three different "wings", including a well-lit conservatory. Delicious and creative meals with rotating specials set this restaurant above most others offering British fare in Durham.
B. C.
Excellent traditional English food - some of the best fish and chips we’ve ever had. The sticky toffee pudding desert was amazing. Great atmosphere and service
C. E.
We booked a table for 12 for our work Christmas lunch and had a wonderful time! The staff were all lovely and the meals were fantastic.
The inn is really warm and cosy and we all loved the roaring fire!
P. D.
Loved the rooms, bar was also great for a drink with friendly attentive staff. Price was good for Durham, and just a short and very pleasant stroll into town. Fully recommend this place if visiting Durham.
A. W.
Nice pub. Does contactless. Very nice inside very upperclass. Menu is a bit on the pricey side for what is it but has seating outside and lots of space inside. Did not stay as was a bit more expensive than other pubs in the city centre.
W.
Nicest food i have ever tasted in my life. But what really spoilt it, apart from candle almost falling on my head was the blatant deliberate attempt to charge us twice for drinks. Really upset me we very nearly didnt notice... Not what i expect from British owners.
A. P.
Very nice place. I had the lamb shank and it was delicious. No ipa beers in the place which is very surprising. Easy to walk to from Durham bus station. A great place for a date or for a family gathering. Would go back again.
A. F.
Met friends here for a birthday celebration, starters were served promptly but then we almost were forgotten about when it came to the mains and had to ask for our meal repeatly, the quality of the food was good. Their parking area is small but there is plenty on the street.
T. K.
Good service initially until I asked if they sold bottles of wine and was looked at as if I was underage, with the reply of "wine?" I was so embarrassed I asked my partner to go and get it instead. Room was nice though smaller than what I expected after looking at pictures, only problem other than this was the freeview connection was rubbish as well as the internet connection, though not really fault of the hotel. Breakfast was excellent no complaints. Check out time could be a bit later than 10 as I was woken up by a cleaner knocking at the door. A good last minute hotel but would not reccomend for special occasions.
A. S. S.
The food here can be a bit hit and miss, but when it's good it's great. When busy service is a little slow and dishes sell out early, but still worth visiting. A firm favourite!
P. S.
Booked at short notice for Sunday lunch. It was one of the best we've had in a pub.
L. B.
The bar snacks are stunningly good. Korean pork and haggis Scotch eggs a must! Service was a bit hit and miss. Had to ask for cutlery and napkins and water was brought without glasses.
D. V.
Very good for Sunday lunch
S. A.
Had a lovely meal in very pleasant surroundings. Good beer, great food and the portions were a canny size. The ox cheek was particularly good.
L. W.
Really enjoyed our two night stay -our room was comfortable and very clean. The atmosphere in the pub was very relaxed and the food was delicious -we ate there both evenings.Breakfast was good too and it was clear that the staff were working hard and were very professional.
T. M.
An excellent food pub- the Observer/Guardian review sums it up very well. Excellent flavours, good sized portions, friendly. Service not always the best, but the quality makes up for it
C. H.
I can identify with the last message . I called to ask about a room booking. I stood for ages before staff behind the bar who knew I was waiting decided to stop their conversation about TV and clothes and decided to enquire if they could help after I said excuse me can you help me ! I asked if their were vacant rooms they didn't know asked if I could speak to the manage waited 15 minutes and the manager I agree had poor management skills if any. I was told there was no vacancies but if there had been I wouldn't have sent my friends there. This pub 2 yrs ago was good the food and staff excellent but cant say the same now. Charlotte Straker Gray
M. F.
Food was absolutely excellent. Really delicious. A few mistakes were made by the waiting staff but overall very good. Worth a visit
D. W.
This is a very nice pub serving great food. The real fire gave it a cosy feel and added to the lovely ambience. Try the snacks as starters as you get plenty and they are delicious.
C. S.
Lovely friendly staff but disappointed in lack of choice. Hadn't realised it was only serving pizza and mostly only vegetarian pizzas. Having said that I had the only meat pizza and it was nice.
A. H.
Decent quality rooms and a very reasonable price. Probably 10 minutes walk down hill to the edge of the city, but a bit longer getting back up. Particularly impressed by the friendly and efficient service.
P. H.
Lovely pub well situated but let down by the service slightly and the fact no chips came like stated with meal then waited 15 mins for them to be undercooked. Such a shame.
R. P.
A nice pub a short distance from the train station. There's a decent choice of food and drinks. It can sometimes be difficult to find a seat though when busy
J. L.
Yes I enjoyed it here thanks
W. G.
The atmosphere and decor were lovely, the food was magnificent (I recommend the pork belly), and the service was friendly. Fantastic Lunch, will come here again.
D. R.
Visited on a cold wet evening so the softly lit bar warmed by the open fire was extremely welcoming. Good range of beer and food. Friendly staff
C. T.
I used to frequent the garden house when I was courting my now wife in the 70's,when it was 10p,a pint or1s and 3d old money now you need a mortgage to afford to drink in here £4.10 a pint ,Still a nice pub does decent food but expensive if you are on the Pensions side of life
B. C.
A nice enough room but it was very hot (I think from being above the kitchens). Breakfast was nice but took a while to get served. Could do with napkins on the table.
J. A.
Me and my husband had dinner here on Friday can say the sevice was grate food was very good the lamb was excellent would defiantly recommend. Shame about the chocolate browny was very dry 😩
M. M.
Decoration is done with taste and the menu has been upgraded since. You can find authentic pub food and a few finer dishes
C. C.
A lovely place to stay.Nicola made you feel so welcome nothing was too much trouble, and worked very hard.enjoyed the full English breakfast.lovely spacious rooms and clean comfy beds.definitely would stay here again.
D. S.
Lovely bar, friendly staff and very tasty food. Overall a really good place to go.
g. p.
A.good.selection of ales and a great food.menu add to the charm of this.old fashioned English pub. And in the summer the beer garden makes. It the ideal place for a.cooling pint.
K. P.
Popped in for lunch the other day and the food was beautifull and the service was second to none. Made to feel very welcome from walking in and they allow dogs too so and provide beds for them to lye in while you eat.
D. B.
Usually has 2-4 real ales on tap. Two fires (also real) over Winter and a sun deck for Summer. Pub lunch is reliably good. No TV!
N. W.
Reasonably priced with a reasonable quality of food. Atmosphered was good but can become a little busy and service can suffer a little as a result.
I. T.
Nicely decorated pub with good variety of drinks including real ales. Rooms are spacious, clean, well equipped and reasonable priced.
J. A.
Great place. Good food and drink. Feat staff and excellent service.
s. c.
Nice comfortable rooms. Excellent gastro pub with great service and food. Good value as well. Fantastic breakfast very friendly staff.
T. F.
The garden house inn has a nice range of beer, if a little pricey. The bar snacks are best in durham. Cannot comment on food as i haven't tried it.
J. W.
Food is superb, staff deliver an excellent service. 4 stars due to the wait, 2 hour turn around for a starter and a main.
C. 9.
Not a bad pub and food is a good standard however whenever we go something goes wrong which takes the shine off the experience.
M. G.
Lovely atmosphere and decor ...lovely staff...fab food and the best sticky toffee pudding and butterscotch sauce I have ever had ...love this place xx
R. D.
Great pizza and service. Very relaxed atmosphere - perfect for families
a. r.
It's a beautiful place with garden (where you can have food or drinks, if you prefer) and taste food for children and adults (no only English food): Mussels, Squid, Prawns, Beef and more.
R. M.
Excellent food and excellent service. Been a while since last visit, won't leave it so long till the next time.
P. W.
Gorgeous food - fancy pub dishes, with some more exotic additions too. Cosy pub atmosphere. Nice wine.
B. M.
Not as good as it was first time round. Food was good but beef could've been warmer, plate was too small, and conservatory was cold
A. O.
Excellent, tasty food which was enjoyed by all of our group. Service was a bit slow but it was Sunday lunchtime.
A. G.
It's friendly (dog friendly) and food is always made/served at high standard.
J. S.
Popped in for a bar meal. Had a couple of Swedish blondes. Then one of the best restaurant fish and chips, ever..... A great improptue night out
S. B.
Had a lovely few days at The Garden House Inn. The staff made us very welcome and were really friendly. Food was good and served in pleasant surroundings.
C. A.
Lovely atmosphere and excellent food.
A good place to meet if you want somewhere a bit quieter as it isn't quite in the city centre
M. S.
Only had drinks nice enough place but not cheap at all.
H. F.
We recently had visitors from Austria who had a young child and it was very accommodating. Very friendly staff and the food was great, perfect for all of us.
p. d.
Fantastic meal I had the monkfish which was just right. The service was excellent we will definitely visit again

J. B.
Pleasant staff, good food and not expensive
C. H.
Warm welcome, real fires and an eclectic menu that's all really well cooked. The whole family wished we lived nearer.
M. H.
Really good selection of beers and food. All food cooked to order and very well prepared.

A. S.
Fabulous food, lovely atmosphere, very friendly staff...what more could you want from a restaurant!
O. H.
Nice menu, indoors is very pleasant, outdoors was a bit run down and in need of a clean when we visited
A. B.
Not quite at the standard of Bistro 21, but an interesting start nonetheless. The menu was very restricted for someone with fish allergies such as myself!
D. H.
Only had a drink, but nice place with good choice of beers and friendly staff.
J. B.
Great food as always but slow service! Took about an hour to get food. Was worth the wait.
