Reviews of 56 North
B. R.
I thoroughly recommend the gin tasting events they run. The host did a fantastic job of explaining the process they used to distil their own gin. All in all, it's a great bar and I would happily go again the next time we visit Edinburgh.
D. S.
If you get the chance to do the gin distillery tour do it! I am a converted gin enthusiast! Very interesting talk by an enigmatic and informed owner of the distillery. The gin was absolutely stunning. Booked a table after the tour and the food was lovely, the staff very attentive. Would recommend.
S. S. M.
My friends and I enjoyed a couple of appropriately gourmet Negronis (sunshine and lunar). We sat at a cosy table. However, for the price of the cocktails, I wouldn't have expected to be pressured to leave by being forced to pay for our drinks.
J. S.
Sorry no pics again as was in my face immediately 😂 we both had Auld Reekie burgers and fries, absolutely brilliant!! Very tasty! Will defo be back!!! Went back!! Pic is Bangkok and posh fish burgers all amazing
L. T.
Visited for a gin tasting session, and stayed for something to eat. The gin tasting was very enjoyable - we had a G&T before the 'formal' tasting, then were taken to the tasting room by Reggie. She was friendly and knowledgeable, and the gins we tried were delicious, as was the final G&T which we had upstairs in the bar. The food afterwards was fantastic too - perfect for soaking up the various different South Loch gins! Definitely to be recommended.
K. B.
Found this great place on our first night we arrived in Edinburgh. A really warm welcome when we walked in, the food looked and smelled amazing but we had eaten earlier, so we didn't eat there.
Would definitely recommend this pub
H.
Lovely bar! We did the gin tasting followed by dinner. Such a friendly place, beautiful set up and delicious haggis burgers.
We both had the MacBeth Burger.
K. H.
My second visit here as I enjoyed it so much the first time, I made sure to come back. Great food, perfectly rare steak served and tasty scallops, amazing gin list with every option available to try. And a few cocktails enjoyed too. Friendly staff. My only issue that dampened things was having sports being played on the TV quite loudly while trying too enjoy our food and drinks.
But apart from that I would definitely come back again, need to carry on working through the gin list.
E. B.
Great atmosphere and delicious food served by a very efficient and cheerful waiter. He was also very knowledgeable in helping us choose the gins we wanted and which tonic complemented them best.
J. M. A.
Fantastic selection of gin. 4 pages of Scottish gin and plenty more from the rest of the world. We had 12! different gins and very satisfied with all of them. The booths are very cozy but the rest of the decor a bit cheesy. The staff could be more engaged and now a lot more about the gin selection.
S. L.
Great atmosphere. Welcoming host who was knowledgeable with gins! Great food, steak was the best I've tasted. Could have eaten it all again! Just delicious
M. W.
Definitely a place to visit if you like gin. The menu is extensive and has every type of gin you could want. They also have lots of different tonics / mixers to go with them too. Staff were friendly and very helpful too. Would definitely come back.
P. B.
Nice place for a beer outside, only downside is it is on the main road but it does get the sun! Good service, friendly staff. One star off because the gents toilets smelled terrible.
S. H.
Absolutely gorgeous! The food in there was delicious!! We got an itison deal and it was an absolute steal!!! The burgers are really tasty ! The staff were lovely and the service was super fast!
The set up in the bar, is very "covid friendly" as each booking is in a booth of their own. Very private and safe and hand sanitizer on each table !
K. K.
Excellent service and burgers, chips were good too! Gin and cocktails are fab! Not my first time at 56 North but first time out since lockdown. All rules adhered to. Will be back
G. A.
Bar and food are great, huge selection of gin. Highlight was definitely gin and cheese tasting session - informative, funny and very very tasty
M. G.
Awesome gin bar. Had an amazing Porter's gin. Loved it
K. M.
Really excellent service during the covid restrictions with a quiet family-friendly atmosphere. I can't speak for what it is like later in the evening but I enjoyed our drinks and time there with lots of choice.
L. M.
A very welcome stopover for my soul mate and myself.
Pleasant, wellcoming, with lovely and efficient Staff.
S. K.
Most amazing gin selections at decent pricing. You can also hold a conversation without shouting at each other whilst not comprising on listening to great music. The place has a secret garden for the summer months and a large outdoor seating area at the front. The staff were polite and observant. Will definitely be back!
T. R.
Gin experience was really worth it so much knowledge in gin now. You get to try 8 different gins the tasting lasts about 2 hours was a lovely experience with my 3 friends.
J. C.
Love this place! A wide range of gins to chose from. The food's good too. The secret garden is nice on a sunny day 🌞
K. S.
Amazing gin bar with friendly and knowledgeable staff. Great experience and huge selection! Recommended!
A. O.
Great place to go with friends. Every Tuesday evening there is a Go club meeting, very interesting.
L. G.
HUGE selection of gins! If you like your gin you definitely need to go. Staff where friendly and welcoming. Only real issue there was a big birthday celebration when we where there and they took over the whole place including what music was on
C. M.
Great cocktail bar/restaurant. Love the outdoor seating, perfect for summer days. If you love gin, this is your place! Staff very friendly.
D. C.
Visited here recently and we were pleasantly surprised with the quick and friendly service. Good selection of food and drinks and nice outdoor seating available.
D. S.
Really a lot of gins! But the service is not the best (the are not really attentive) and as you can see even the glasses are dirty.
The food looks good but was overpriced compared to other places
I. P.
Really nice Gin Bar... So many to choose from. Lovely friendly staff.
Great food... Good size portions too.
T. M.
56 North was extremely accommodating for our local student society to host a pub quiz last minute! Bar staff even got involved and were great team players.
Great choice of gins and flaming sharing cocktails !
L.
My partner and I went in just on the off chance and didn't regret it! Lovely and friendly staff, one of thr nicest steaks I've ever had and the home brewed gin was lovely. Drop in at lunch, you won't regret it!
C. N.
Visited on Saturday eve for drinks, staff were ever so friendly and accomodating. Cocktails were lush and service fast. If you book outdoors wrap up as it is a bit chilly some heaters or blankets would be a nice touch. Had a great evening regardless thank you!
C. H.
Amazing selection of gin and couple interesting beers. Really cold when I visited. Think it would have a great vibe of an evening. Visited middle of the day and it felt empty though there were other folk.
S. G.
I've started meeting a friend for lunch here once a week over the past 6 weeks. It's a great place, with friendly accommodating staff, the option to sit outside where half of the tables are under an awning so if you don't want to get burnt on a sunny day (which you shouldn't - remember SPF and reapply every 2-3 hours or you'll end up looking like a raisin by the time you're 50!!) you won't!!
We tend to sit inside because I'm not built for the sun. If I was any whiter I'd be transparent. Their lunch menu is maybe a bit limited for some but all the staples are there:- burgers, (amazing) fries, all day breakfasts until 4pm!! I'd recommend their eggs benedict with avocado 🥑. It. Is. To. Die. For!!! 5/5 all the way!!...
Except I wish they provided something to place drinks on. A coaster or even a napkin, because - before you know it - the table is all wet from the cold beer/soft drink* (*delete as applicable). Still 5/5. I can bring my own napkin!! 😁
T. M.
Very pleased with our visit here, nice food, good selection of drinks, helpful staff. Highly recommend
J. W.
Great place to visit for a drink. It's a wee bit from the centre of Edinburgh but a really nice place, plenty of space for a quiet drink or if you're out with friends also plenty of seating together.
M. E.
This is a great place with a good atmosphere and decor.
We arrived without a booking around 5pm on a Friday night and even though there were 5 of us, they were able to get us seated within a few minutes. The COVID compliance is extremely well monitored without being intrusive.
They have local beers on tap and a huuuge amount of gins including their own brand. We had some of the mozzarella sticks, halloumi fries and rosemary fries. All were delicious and very well priced.
The staff were friendly and looked after us very well. I'd definitely recommend this place for an impromptu visit or plan ahead and book one of the special themed packages. (Check the website to see what they have. )
Well worth the 5 star rating.
E. B.
Great selection of gin. If you are feeling hungry, they do a nice vegan falafel burger.
K. M.
Had lunch here with my wife the food and service were amazing.
Neil and Harry our servers for the night were fantastic and thanks for the gin recommendations.
This was our second visit and certainly not our last we will be back next time we are in Edinburgh.
D. M.
food was very good and the staff where friendly and new their stuff great place to go large selections of gins and great atmosphere will defiantly be back
R.
Lovely staff and very good at catering to our needs 😊
S.
Everything about this place was excellent. House gin great, food and service magic. The staff seemed to be enthusiastic about what they were doing and really looked after us. Totally recommend.
S. O.
Beautiful meal ,staff very friendly
B. M.
If you like gin then you've arrived in your heaven. The selection of gins and gin cocktails is bamboozling!! The drinks menu is 16 pages and most of it is gin! Not a gin fan, don't despair. There is a fine selection of beers, wines, whisky and other non-gin cocktails to wrap your taste buds around. The (not so) secret garden is lovely with huge canopies protecting you from the unpredictable Scottish weather. Be warned though, not all outside table are under cover. Great place that warrant multiple visits.
C. S.
Gin and cheesetasting was a great experince
D. R. S.
Great selection of gins and amazing scottish breakfast! Lovely service too
L. D.
Fantastic place to meet friends for a drink / catchup. We sat outside and were kept very well informed by the manager and well served by the team. A great selection of drinks available too.
E. A.
Came here for the G&T experience. They have a huge gin selection and tons of mixers and garnishes to choose from. It was delicious and well priced!
F. A.
4 stars overall but 5 stars for the waiter Neil who was an absolute gem. So helpful, fun and knowledgeable and made it a really customised experience.
Has outside seating and cool booths inside!
J. B.
Lovely wee gem! As they have their own little gun distillery, the cocktails were, of course, delicious. Friendly service and tasty food. Would have 5-starred but was initially a bit put off by the sparse decor. Felt a bit cold. But overall, would definitely visit again.
L. W.
Fantastic tour, great staff, wonderful drinks, cool vibe.
A. B.
Very friendly welcome and a good selection of food on the menu. Quality of food served for our lunch was excellent.
R. B.
Great scottish food, attentive service, and nice to sit outside in central Edinburgh. Scottish breakfast was perfect and tea served in an iron pot matched it brilliantly.
M. C.
Had a lovely evening last night. Very polite, helpful and efficient staff with a particular mention to Neil who is very entertaining. We had superb food, drinks and atmosphere. Thanks guys.
M. L.
Great time and lovely lunch. Staff really helpful. We were at an outside table when it started to rain. We were quickly transferred to a dry table indoors. Service was quick, efficient and friendly.
J. W.
Great gin, friendly staff. Good food. What more do you want?!
E. B.
Very nice place to get some gin with a huge selection. Was approached by a member of staff with some nice chat and helped with selection and gave advice.
Returning for sure.
j. f.
Great staff and great food
W. M.
Lovely staff, the food was great and the coconut and maple syrup fries are A MUST! Will be back!
B.
Too many Covid rules in the garden, no standing when drinking, no shouting to the other half of our party, no moving tables (1foot to the left to get out of the rain), no approaching our other party's table to talk to them. I don't really blame the establishment they were only following the rules I suppose. The server's were ok and did give us plenty of warnings regarding the rules throughout the time we were there and did accept our apologies for not knowing them. Our party had to book a 2 hour slot, might be different rules now, I would phone ahead first.
L. B.
Great cocktail and snack sitting out in the good weather. Felt a safe
N. L.
Went to the gin tasting - as a gin lover, it was fantastic. The gins they let you try are really good and the information given on how gin is made was really fascinating. Would always recoment going there. Went to the bar after with two other girls from the tasting and tried our very first martini. The guy who took our order and served us was very nice! 100% a good experience.
J. G.
Loved this place!! Haven't ever really been into gin and did a gin tasting. Neil was awesome. Very friendly and personal. Am more of a whisky/whiskey drinker and really help connect that with gin. Was an all around great time. Would highly recommend!!
M. C.
Nice gin bar with a great variety of drinks. Good food as well, I was told. Nice atmosphere and quick service.
B. S.
Food, drinks and service were all good but wines in particular were expensive considering the quality of them wasn't anything to write home about.
E. H.
Fantastic selection of gins to try and very helpful, friendly staff. The ambience and decor is lovely as well.
L. F.
Really nice place. Staff friendly. Covid precautions spot on! Went on ITISON burger deal - great value. We tried the alcohol-free gins. Very nice.
S. C.
Went for a Sunday night drink. If you like gin, this is the place for you! I couldn't decide what gin to choose from their extensive list so was recommended a drink based on my likes/dislikes. Prices of the drinks were extremely reasonable too.
Fun and friendly staff. Would definitely return!
C. H.
Absolutely fantastic selection of gins and really good food! Well located and reasonably priced, with very friendly staff (despite being short-staffed when we were in). Went for lunch and the gin tasting masterclass they hold, highly recommended and will be back.
J. K.
Been here a few times now, food has always been enjoyable and fills you up, a few good beers as well as gin. Steak sandwiches were fantastic value, sweets to lick the plate for, if you get a booth then you are in the best seats. Service is always good no matter who is on.
A. M.
Party central in the gin garden but bring a wad of cash as it's making London look cheap these days! I love the place and I just don't go as often as I might.
M. R.
Best burger I've had in Edinburgh, honestly will be dreaming about it for days. Staff were awesome. Will be back asap
J.
Tasty food and amazing gin. The service is friendly, helpful and warm. Lovely atmosphere. Would highly recommend the sweet potato fries with coconut and maple syrup. Couldn't see many dietary requirements catered for- GF, Ve etc.
E. H.
Fun place that serves a great selection of cocktails and in particular gin and gin based drinks! The staff is helpful but sometimes not as attentive as they could be. They were very nice and let me bring my birthday cake in after we were rained off the meadows! However they also lost the reservation...! Overall I always enjoy coming and trying some different gins. The decor is fresh and modern and the atmosphere is lively but not too loud to have an actual conversation! Went to a gin tasting here and it was great!
H. D. K.
A good place to go for after work drinks. Good location, I love that that they have tables to sit outside. Inside is pretty descent and comfortable as well. Very helpful and friendly stuff. But that's it. The food is way below average and overpriced with small portions. I understand the trend for a gastro pub type of place, but you need to have quality and quantity to your menu. Oh, almost forgot, amazing gin cocktails with great variety to choose from !! Gin fans, you will not be disappointed!
D.
Great food drink and atmosphere. Super pleasant and helpful staff.
D. J.
Really friendly staff with a good food menu. I had one of the gin slushies and it was amazing. Definitely recommend if you are looking for an upmarket place to eat/ drink
N. T.
Very good restaurant with great staff!
Neil and Gary provide excellent service - definitely not indifferent to customers! Neil offered to boil a soother that our baby dropped and his meal suggestions were perfect too. To our amazement he and Gary knew a few facts about our country (Georgia) which is not so usual :) We are grateful because these guys made our first encounter with Edinburgh special and memorable.
Nicole and Rachael were nice too. Kudos for the management for hiring and training the proper people.
S. B.
Fantastic Bar One of Edinburgh's best. Huge variety of gins and mixers available, the staff are all knowledgeable and will be happy to make recommendations. The food is excellent especially the Breakfast and the Burgers cant wait to go back.
D. O.
Amazing selections of drinks, out with friends and enjoyed my time here. So much selection to choose from.
Y. S.
Amazing Bar with a huge variety of Gins. Tge Barkeeper and his Team are very lovely people, they know what they do, ask them for suggestions!
I definitely come back next time and in the meantime I can only warmly recommend 56 North to everyone! Cheers!
C. S.
Always a lovely place for a few drinks and food! Lovely atmosphere, nice lights and not too loud.
Very impressed with their covid measures too; hand sanitiser on each table, digital menus and a booking system to make sure it doesnt get too busy.
H. S.
Gin masterclass with Neil and can't recommend it highly enough! So knowledgeable and enthusiastic. We also stayed for food which was top notch. Will definitely be back!! Lovely atmosphere, great staff, good banter, five outta five!!!
L. O.
Great place, great vibes! Staff super friendly and really effecient. Had a couple of mocktails and have to say the strawberry daiquiri was amazing. Thanks guys
J. C.
Great service. Well spaced out and very clean. Lovely food and felt very safe and comfortable in these weird times. Staff were very attentive and constantly sanitizing surfaces. Great for our first evening meal out after lockdown.
M. O.
Attended a Gin masterclass and found it very interesting and engaging. Stayed for a few drinks and a steak dinner afterwards. Food was excellent and staff were very helpful and informative and one staff member took the time to chat to us at our table and offered great advice on choosing out of the seemingly thousands of Gin and tonic combinations we could have chosen from. Great venue and atmosphere! Will definitely be back soon. If I had one complaint it would be that it could have been a tad warmer, was a very cold day however but the heating could have been cranked up a notch or two. Overall top notch!
k. D.
I would have given 5 stars because my experience was excellent however I tried to book with them direct the day before for 6pm and was told out right fully booked!
Disappointed as they were recommended I went onto the 5pm website to see what other restaurants were in that area and 56 North came up as available so I booked and received offer £12 for 2 courses I phoned in the day just to confirm all was ok fine! When we arrived only 2 tables full I said to the waiter why are you empty and turning people away he said yes turned a few bookings away because we were busy this morning I was flabbergasted I was going to a show at the festival theatre and the restaurant should have been full! One more table arrived before we left so 4 in total!
Service was informative and excellent
Food was great a bit more choice on the market menu would have been good
Really nice restaurant will be back if they feel like taking my booking!
Very strange business model! They turned down bookings when empty and I had to book on a special offer deal thus them losing money twice?!?! Owner must have too much cash!
L. C.
I was here for dinner with a group of visiting fellow hikers from Russia. Service was spot on, fast and very patient with the language barrier. Food was great and so were our G&T. We all were very satisfied and we made it on time to our talk at the Appleton Tower. I didn't book as it was during the week and we were a small group. But I would recommend booking if a larger group or during the weekend
B. H.
Excellent burgers at reasonable prices! Really fast, friendly service and a cosy atmosphere. All of the burgers could be made vegetarian including all the toppings. The portions were great, especially the chips! Also a really fantastic selection of gins, including some distilled on the premisis - we will definitely be returning to sample some more!
H. C.
Great catch up with a friend over delicious food and crisp, cold ciders. The staff are absolutely brilliant at 56 North; happy, attentive and extremely knowledgeable.
H. B.
Delicious food, friendly staff and amazing gin. What's not to like? Will return soon.
G.
Enjoyed the breakfast sorted me out until the evening, staff very pleasant and helpful. Next time I will have the burger which looked very nice.
C. B.
Lovely selection of Gins, each very well flavoured and unique in their own way. Nice little space too, with some private booths. Staff were very friendly and efficient!
T. M.
Amazing selection of gin and tonics!!
The 56 North D.E. Strawberry and Vanilla it’s a new favourite!
A. M.
Nice food and surroundings. Also v nice frozen gin cocktail! However when we asked for more hot water in our tea we saw this was added to our bill for £1!! For hot water!!? The waitress mumbled something about that being their policy but did remove it when we challenged it. Come on 56 North, be reasonable
J. “. T.
Excellent place to grab a cocktail and whiskey tasting. Staff was extremely friendly and knowledgeable. I really can't recommend this place enough if you are interested in gins of all kinds and whiskeys. I will definitely be back!
M. Y.
Large and fantastic selection of Gins, beautiful bar, nice booths on the side.
Great place for Gin and Gin based cocktails.
The food was OK, but doesn't quite match up to the Drinks.
I consider 56 North, an amazing place for pre-dinner G&T, but would go elsewhere for dinner.
K. M.
Great place, outdoor very clean and tidy. The staff serving were amazing, so helpful and provided great service. Definitely will be back.
A. S.
My girlfriend and I had a wonderful experience attending the gin masterclass taught by Lindsay. She was very passionate and knowledgeable about all things gin! From the history to the scientific and creative process of making gin, we had a fantastic time learning from her.
To top it off, it was great to be able to taste all the different types of gins throughout the session with a variety of tonics and botanicals.
We will definitely be returning to 56 North for their kind, attentive staff and to try the extensive selection of gin. Thank you Lindsay!!
F. R.
Best Gin Bar in town! Service personnel was very kind and helpful too! Totally recommend going here!
G. S.
Great service, staggering range of gins, good beer selection. We sat outside in the sun and watched the world go by. Sun not guaranteed.
T. M.
Fantastic full Scottish breakfast at a very reasonable price. The waitresses were attentive and friendly, and the booth we were given was both comfortable and cosy. Will definitely be back to try dinner options as I've heard very good things.
m. k.
Good food, pleasent staff well worth a visit.
A. D.
Amazing food, location and service.
J. B.
Attended a gin masterclass and absolutely loved it. It was very interesting to learn about the origins of different Scottish gins and try something new. The staff were very knowledgeable and the cheese pairing was a bonus! Would definitely consider signing up for another master class.
J. K.
Used to meet here regularly for lunch. Always friendly service, and reasonably priced. Can get a bit busy in the evening, but in summer months there is seating outside to help out.
Decent range of beers and cocktails, and the nachos are nice too if you get peckish in the evening. Fairly central if you want to move on elsewhere.
I. A.
They literally have the best burgers ✨
M. F.
The 'secret garden' in the back during fringe fest was a hidden gem to have some food and drinks in a swanky outdoor setting. We also had a gin tasting inside which was fun and informative! Best of luck to South Loch Gin!
H. B.
Very good worth a visit and the storey of how the gin was formed by James
Very interesting , thank you for a lovely afternoon .
B. T.
Great bar, been going regularly for years for brunch, dinner and late night drinks. Also great to sit outside on a sunny day. Great selection of Gina and beers
S. M.
Nice menu, average price for Edinburgh. I love Gin, but was totally overwhelmed by the choice, i was genuinely confused by the variety on offer - the Gin menu was so vast! So I had a House Red which was very nice!
A. R.
Great spot, with a large outdoor patio. Trendy, well-decorated interior. Serving up gin slushies and other delicious cocktails. Must visit their Secret Garden during The Fringe. Also, the owner is delightful.
L. S.
Cocktail bar with a HUGE gin selection. Often has an offer on through the voucher websites for burger and a cocktail so worth keeping an eye out.
Tends to have a lot of diners so if you are just looking for a drink it can be difficult to get a seat as it can be quite busy. It does have a large amount of outdoor seating however.
Service is good; staff are friendly and don't try to hurry you along when it's kicking out time.
J. G.
Loved this place!! Haven't ever really been into gin and did a gin tasting. Neil was awesome. Very friendly and personal. Am more of a whisky/whiskey drinker and really help connect that with gin. Was an all around great time. Would highly recommend!!
B. T.
Great bar, been going regularly for years for brunch, dinner and late night drinks. Also great to sit outside on a sunny day. Great selection of Gina and beers
S. J.
Absolutely love this place, very friendly staff.
E. T.
Cracking place with a great selection of Gins.
J. F.
Great selection of gins and interesting food options!
R. T.
Enjoyed a lovely brunch nice coffee and great service
E. F.
Great find! We sat outside cosy and warm under lovely protection from the weather. Canopies and heaters, a great asset to the area!
J. D.
Food and service were excellent
C. M.
I've always been curious to try this place and we finally got tempted in for brunch with a Groupon voucher. The staff were really friendly but the bar had a bit of a student union feel. Our gigantic Bloody Marys were tasty but seemed to lack any alcohol and the breakfasts tasted like they'd been cobbled together with ingredients from Tesco around the corner. If we weren't there on a deal, it'd have been really overpriced for what it was. On the plus side, the cocktail menu did sound delicious though we didn't try any on this visit.
L. E.
Great service and reasonable Edinburgh prices. I have walked by quite a few times and always thought it's too posh to go in but actually it's a beautiful wee place with good prices and really good drinks! Definetely coming back. The staff was really nice and welcoming as well!
A. R.
Great! Lovely place to go, really big outside area which is nice in the sun. The food was delicious, I had a veggie burger, and there are LOADS of gins. Super friendly staff too, loved it.
J. M.
This place was awesome. The food was amazing. The drinks were delicious. And tge service was wonderful. The man was so hilarious and friendly and he was just a great time and made the experience so much better. Would recommend.
K. B.
Lovely place with really lovely staff. Free water bowl for dogs. Great choice of beer. Thank you!
a. m.
I had the breakfast here with waffles, syrup, bacon and eggs. It was the best breakfast I've had in 2017 - it's a once or twice a year kind of breakfast - I haven't had anything this good in Edinburgh. I think they do gin and stuff too, but I'll be back for breakfast.
K. G.
A Welcoming and friendly staff, great fun selection and food is good too. Look out for Neil he's very knowledgeable about the gins and seems to have a sixth sense for what you will like!
S. L.
Decent place with an extensive gin menu. Not really a gin fan, so probably a bit lost on me. The booths are good if you can grab one, otherwise with the big windows you feel a bit on display.
M. K.
Nice place. Friendly and helpful staff. Great cocktails
E. R.
A fine visit for a couple of drinks. Table prebooked, QR code at the door and table service for covid rules but that's OK.
T. J.
Great food! Fabulous selection of gin and good selection of single malts! It was cold out the night we visited, and the hot toddy's were just perfect. Nice comfortable atmosphere.
R. H. C.
Best gin bar in Edinburgh! The team behind the bar are wonderful! It's not all gin as well, great menu of delicious food and some fantastic beers
D. W.
Fantastic as ever. Excellent customer service, fantastic food and a huge range of gin all wrapped up in a great setting. 5 stars!
A. B.
Had a nice time here with a prebooked Christmas dinner and some friends. Food was surprisingly good. Did not try the gin but there's a selection that looks to have over 200 different types. Insane!
D. M.
Very fancy cocktails, nice space and atmosphere and nicer tables outside when the weather permits. A bit on the fancier and more expensive side. The kind of place where a group of well dressed girls would go for cocktails.
G. B.
Had a great day out in Edinburgh made better by visiting 56 North. Staff were so attentive, nothing was too much trouble and they certainly knew what they were talking about drinks wise. Would recommend a visit to here if you are in Edinburgh
G. S.
Came in on an Itison burger and beer voucher. Fantastic burger, lovely place. Will return for more!
Didn't have any but a massive selection of gin
Well worth a visit!
J. B.
A must visit for gin lovers in Edinburgh... amazing selection of gins and tonics. The menu has 12 pages on their gins alone. Staff is super helpful and friendly.
C. R.
The place has tiny area for tables and chairs and whole centre of floor taken up by bar. Seems rediculous to have such a large bar area when the customer can't move. Staff nice. Toilets clean. Didn't eat but food looks nice.
R. P.
I wouldn't recommend breakfast but dinner is always great. Portions huge. Gin selection top notch and beer selection is good. Staff are always friendly and helpful. Nice bar and restaurant.
J. F.
Great food and drink but having to leave our table wasnt great after 1 and half hours
M. T.
Love this place any time of the day, especially if you are partial to a burger and a cocktail. Also keep an eye on voucher sites as they have some bargains on living social. They have a wild range of cocktails, my favourite is the Edinburgh bramble which has around 3 different shots of flavoured Edinburgh gin mixed with snow ice, perfect refresher after dinner. And don't think its just for drinks the food stands out, they have a wide range of burgers but last time we ventured for a flatbread and a salad, and was not disappointed. A lot of chicken on the satay with the flatbread and perfectly cooked duck in the salad. However what i always think makes the best experience is the staff, especially their server Neil who makes you feel more than welcome and relaxed.

Went for lunch on a nice summer day and was really nice to sit out side in the sun, with a glass of wine. Had some food which were OK pub burgers. I had the chorizo burger, and it came with half a red pepper filled with chorizo and cheese ontop of the burger. Service was not great at all. I was seated for 5 min before i got fed up and just went to the bar to place the order, then I went again to the bar for menus, and to order the food. The food came and we asked for condiments and a glass of wine and the condiments never turned up and i eventually just went back to the bar and asked for them. and i was almost done with my food by the time my wine came. Overall nice location and good cocktails, with nice pub food, but don't expect anyone to help you, just go straight to the bar for any service at all.
N. T.
A gin haven on Edinburgh! Bar staff are friendly and will gladly suggest you different gins. There also a beer garden, so don't miss out this place on a sunny day.
G. T.
Had a fantastic gin tour here, a brilliant experience, with friendly helpful staff throughout. I've never seen so many different gins in one place before, I will definitely be back!
I. W.
Great food, great service!
M. W.
Great food and drinks, staff very attractive and well maintained bar clean with lots of space.
A. Y.
We recently done a gin experience here while not a lover of gin we went due to my daughter being ill and not able to use it.we had a great day and would definitely do it again and by the end I liked one gin😂 we stayed and had food also which was delious. The staff were very friendly and service was good we will definitely be back
J. L.
Excellent selection of gins and the bar is comfortable, airy and fresh. I love the 'secret' garden out back and visit it every time I come up for the fringe festival.
M. P.
I've always had a soft spot for 56 North, I don't know why - I just like the place. It's a trendy bar that doesn't take itself too seriously, the drinks menu is pretty extensive, prices are reasonable, they've got a gigantic HDTV to watch sports on, and the food isn't bad either. None of it is the best in Edinburgh, but on a sunny day you can sit outside with a burger and watch the cars go by. Works for me!
C. A.
Amazing selections of Gin, and lots of other options as well. Staff is lovely
F. A.
Good gin bar which does nice food and other cocktails. Bit of a mixed vibe between the sports watching crew and the pre-club dinner and cocktails lot sometimes though, but nice enough place with big windows to watch the world go by.
M. H.
Great place with knowledgeable staff that can help you find new drinks to enjoy.
Had a sirloin steak which was awesome too!
R. H.
A stylish bar with some nice booth seating that specialises in a mind-boggling array of gins numbering 100+, some aged in house. I had a delicious Tanqueray gin that had been aged for a fortnight in a Zacapa rum barrel
A good range of tonics matched to each gin, which makes a nice change from the standard schweppes that is often too bitter, likewise garnishes are chosen to match your gin.
Can be lacking somewhat in atmosphere if it's quiet.
K. M.
Lovely restaurant. Food was good, but service was fantastic. Staff are wonderful and make the effort to really engage with the customers.
Music is a tad loud, but the enthusiasm of waiting staff, will make your visit one to remember.
K. S.
Well lit, with full glass frontage. It can get a bit noisy when busy. Great in 'summer' for alfresco dining. Staff are friendly. Downside no accessible loo.
L. B.
In general the pub itself is really nice with nice staff, but generally had better food. My friend had the belly pork which had far too much fat on it which she had to cut off and was left with hardly any pork. Myself and my other friend opted for the chargrilled chicken caesar salad, which was basically lettuce, croutons and slices of chargrilled chicken. Hardly any fresh parmesan and no fresh anchovies which would have made it taste so much better. I wouldn't recommend or rush back for the food as very expensive for what you get. Would have been better going to Frankie & Benny's.
C. S.
Great pub, fantastic selection of gin/vodka and everything else. Lovely food. Recently went for the gin tasting experience what was really good
A. W. (.
Cool atmosphere. Not my cup of tea. Decent prices but on the higher side of ££
J. O.
Great location , food fab and lovely outdoor area ,staff friendly and very attentive.
S. P.
We've been in Edinburgh for a week and this is the only place we've been twice, the food and the service is excellent 😁
S. W.
Absolutely lovely gin bar, with extraordinarily knowledgeable staff who have provided excellent service the times I've been. Definitely worth stopping by even if you're not too familiar with gin.
J. M.
Great place, we were in the Beer/Gin garden. Wide range of select gins. Also some good beers. Lovely evening.
D. G.
The sun had been shinning late afternoon, by the time me and my pal got there, almost everyone had gone home. That usually kills anywhere, but not here. Gins galore.....and we went there for wine....not next time...we had a great guy try to educate us. So we need to go back, very soon
B. K.
Very well managed track and trace, conscientious social distancing, fantastically considerate and friendly staff. Amazing unusual gin flavours.
Z. T.
the staff are all lovely and the manager is especially passionate about his recommendations - would highly recommend!!
c. m.
Great selection of gins and the bartenders have excellent depth of knowledge so can recommend you specific drinks depending on your taste.

I wonder if there’s a restaurant for every degree of latitude. My home town sits at the 54th parallel, while Edinburgh sits at the 56th. My town has a North 54, Edinburgh has a North 56—well, okay, 56 North. On a whim I did a search for a North 53 restaurant…bingo, Edmonton. North 52? London. North 55? Northern Ireland. Holy crap, it’s true! I could run a blog where I travel the world visiting a restaurant named for every latitude.
I’m waiting Hollywood!
That being said, I’m sure there would be at least a few degrees missing—not sure if there’s one at the North Pole. Taking this train of thought, would there be duplicates in the South, and would they be the Norths’ mortal enemies? Would they explode if they touched each other like matter/antimatter? I have to check—HOLY SHIZZA, there totally is a South 55!
Upon passing 56 North, I couldn’t help but enter. It’s a modest bistro where sections of charcoal tiles and tan wood panels spread across the floor. Matching tables and chairs are frugal; the tables feature hooks for people to hang bags from….novel. The bar carries enough alcohol to inebriate all of Goldie Hawn’s children. The menu is the definition of humble—one paper affixed to a clipboard. A clipboard.
No really, a clipboard.
The prices are very reasonable with only a few items over ten quid and only one at seventeen pounds. I opted for two starters rather than one with a main. The first was a pork belly & black pudding filo parcel with homemade apple jam. I then followed it up with the autumn vegetable soup. While the filo parcel was amazing, I thought the soup was honestly…the best word to describe it was fibrous, which is…totally a word I just discovered. Thankfully, it was only a daily soup, which means I hope that in the future it won’t repeat.
A good meal and a good value. I liked the décor, especially the hole built into the dividing wall allowing me an unobstructed view of the TV in the corner—I kid you not, they did this. The service was great with the waiter/bartender/probable owner bragging about the free Wifi offered inside the restaurant. By the way, the password for the network was totally “FreeScotland”.
56 North is a lovely modern addition to a bucolic, borderline antediluvian landscape (yeah, antediluvian). I’ve said that I loved and still do love the look of Edinburgh—the stone construction, the towering spires, the fact that the city is perpetually moist all the time—but I do appreciate it when I cross the threshold to an interior and find it upbeat and modern. There’s a TV, but it’s not a pub. It has a bar but it’s not a club. 56 North is comfortable. It’s like a giant pillow in front of a fire on a cold night. It’s where you take someone to hang out with for two hours. It’s where single guys work off a pint of bourbon and lament the days when they were in love.
Okay, that last one doesn’t sound very fitting, but I could totally see it happening.
56 North gets my recommendation because it was unpretentious, welcoming, with better than average food. With my review of North 54, that makes two latitudes. That leaves 178 more to go….more or less.

As a student, my friend and I visited the bar and enjoyed their food and drink when we visited for a light lunch in between studying. Although it was known as a bar, the food served at the time was of evident good quality and not your usual impression of bar food. Recently we were back at 56 North for a friend's birthday where canapes were served. We were concerned that because the party started at 6pm that we would be hungry afterwards, having to skip dinner. The food included mini caesar salads (chicken pieces with mayo and parmesan shavings served on gem lettuce leaves), mini burgers, chicken skewers, smoked salmon bellinis, fallafels and olives with bread, olive oil and vinegar. Let's just say the food more than sastified our need for dinner and was delicious.
M. W.
Had a fun couple of hrs with friends for drinks here sitting outside. Staff were friendly and helpful.
M. L.
Really great service and although they made a mistake in our order they sorted it straight away, apologised profusely and gave us 20% off the bill without asking. When the food arrived it was presented very well and tasted great.
M. B.
Lovely food but bit of a small portion with the pulled pork wrap. Made up for by the syrup and coconut chips, they were amazing!
E. F.
Great find! We sat outside cosy and warm under lovely protection from the weather. Canopies and heaters, a great asset to the area!
E. M.
Good gin tasting, however the staff did not know which food or tonics to pair up with which gin... then proceeded to tell us all about how good small companies making gin themselves were and to watch out for big companies remarketing their gin under small labels, before trying to sell everyond gin made my a big company being rebranded as their own 56... 🤦♀️
U. G.
Pleasant staff, excellent service, nice surroundings.
J. F.
Great selection of gins and interesting food options!
C.

Good place for gin lovers. Small still at sight. Atmosphere a little too “simple”. Big windows to the street too “intrusive”.
R. C.
Amazing gin selection. Did a tasting and the guy leading it was very informative and it was lots of fun. Lunch was tasty too.
R. T.
Tables were well spaced out and those who were working there were very friendly. There are gluten free and vegetarian options.
J. S.
Good food but staff could do with an interjection if life. Left standing for 5 Mins whilst they decided in an half empty restaurant which table we were getting.
M. P.
I went for brunch with my friends, it was good and also the service, the only thing is they dont have vegetarian option for the full breakfast, but beside that was all good.

S. B.
Great selection of gins. Slightly pricey but worth it for the table service and atmosphere.
T. W.
This place didn't do it for me. It's a little generic and dull, with bland food and drinks.
We visited on a voucher deal, so it was good value, but at full price, the breakfast we had would have been expensive for what it was.
It lacked atmosphere, and I'd rather go somewhere else.
G. R.
Great food and service, even with a reduced menu during relaunch after lockdown.
