Reviews of Halfway House
C. G.
This pub is such a hidden gem right at the base of Fleshmarket Close, where we happened to be staying during our visit to Edinburgh. We stopped in for the sheer convenience, and immediately felt comfortable in this cozy little spot. There were just a few others there, so our group of 5 easily found a table to gather around. The bartender was super friendly and offered great suggestions to suit our individual tastes. She was also a saint for dealing with some of the patrons who couldn't seem to take last call for an answer.
The space is pretty small, so we ended up befriending the group of locals who were there and barhopping with them when it closed around 11pm. Overall we were enamored with Halfway House and I would encourage anyone visiting old town not to overlook it!
N. D.
Reputedly the smallest pub in Edinburgh. It certainly is one that should be visited. Excellent real ale and a warm and friendly welcome. We last visited many, many years ago and "found" it again yesterday. Still the most fabulous pub. Situated "halfway" down the steps from Old Town to Waverley. A real gem!!!!
J. M.
A cosy, characterful bar hidden halfway down an Old Town close, decorated with railway memorabilia. It is said to be the smallest pub in Edinburgh, with just 14 seats.
There you can get the Scottish experience and order the haggis, neeps and tatties for just £7.50, or go for an old pub classic steak and gravy pie which is only £3.95! This is definitely a hidden gem of Edinburgh’s haggis scene.
k. M.
Great wee pub and i do mean wee, really really wee. Good atmosphere and worth hunting it out
L. C.
This tiny pub is by far one of the best in the old town of Edinburgh. With very limited capacity and amazing staff, it is a cross between your local and your living room at home (it's that small). Free WiFi is offered here, it's dog friendly + they have a vast range of Whiskies and cask ales.
E. P.
This terrific tiny tavern was a brilliant discovery as we wandered Edinburgh between plans. The welcoming barman was chatty and friendly and offered his knowledge on Scotch when ordering.
Whether you are waiting for a train or the weather to depart you should always stop here for a pint and a dram.
M. P.
The pub was charming and welcoming. We popped in for a night cap on our way home each night and had a friendly greeting every time from the bar man. Brilliant atmosphere, would highly recommend!
G. T.
Excellent tiny wee pub just out the back entrance of the station, a favourite for a quick pint. Currently have a selection of 4 Stewart's Brewing beers.
R. D.
Nice wee boozer, so close to station. Great whisky selection also. Smallest pub in edinbugh so might not get in if large crowds.
j. g.
It's a lovely little pub, as the name states, it's halfway up a flight of steps that lead to the royal mile.
Nice friendly welcome, and good range of beers.
A. C.
Good cozy pub, with decent drink selection. Bar man was friendly and helpful selecting whisky.
F. O.
Small little place where you can escape for a cold pint or dram before the train departure
J. H.
The coolest pub ever. Not even as big as my lounge room, and super cosy. Good selection of beers and enough of a menu to keep everyone happy. Down a side alley away from the tourist areas so not overcrowded.
J. P.
Wandering up and down Edinburgh and looking for a wee place to rest your feet? Look no further than this pint-sized public house with a solid selection of liquor and drafts.
m. h.
Very small on the inside but it's a great way to catch your breath if you're walking up Fleshmarket steps
g. c.
Small pub, but great beer selection. We'll worth a visit, but get there early!
C. G.
An outstanding Edinburgh pub which is unique in its location up a staircase in the iconic Fleshmarket Close. Despite its size this pub manages to squeeze in a comfortable seating area a bar and a great choice of draught beers and whiskies. Let's hope and pray it lives again after lockdown.
J. I.
Located close to Waverley Station, funnily enough halfway up a flight of steps, you can find the Halfway House. This is our sort of pub. Small, friendly and somewhere which takes its drink seriously. Not sure you like something....then ask the bar staff and they are only too happy to advise. Lots of railway memorabilia adds to the atmosphere and there is a relaxed feel to the place. Not too touristy; a proper pub in fact.
C. J.
Possibly one of the smallest pubs I've been in. But just because it lacks in size doesn't mean it lacks character. It's a brilliant little pub full of atmosphere and local crowd. Serving good ales and good food, well worth a visit!
c.
My friends and I came here for lunch yesterday after stumbling across their sign near Edinburgh Waverley train station. It is very small and the menu next to the bar had less than 10 things to choose from but we had a great time. I had haggis, Neeps and tatties here for the first time and thoroughly enjoyed it, the beer on tap is really nice too (we all had a few different things).
The lady who I'm assuming is the owner was very friendly and welcoming to us in from bringing our lunch to pouring drinks.
Great value too, Haggis, Neeps and Tatties at £7.50.
I'd definitely recommend this place, if it's busy you may need to wait a little for food though.
B. L.
I really like this place. The beer is always top quality. It's tiny though so can feel very crowded. They also do a very simple selection of food if you need a snack. And it's extremely convenient for Waverley station(On the old town side).
R. L.
Awesome, quaint little pub! Best Haggis I've ever had. Good beer selection. Tiny place, so be prepared. Excellent prices, this close to the mile. Quick lunch, but would like to come and just hang out and chat with the locals.
P. S.
Good quality cask ale, quite a wide selection of draught beers and spirits. Clean and well managed by the host.
J. B.
Good selection of whiskey and gin. Bar tender was knowledgeable and welcoming. Great atmosphere.
A. J.
Friendly pub. Very small.
Great pint of Guinness, red wine was disappointing. Generic small bottle of cheap wine.
F. B.
Great little gem. We were lucky to get a seat but so glad we did. Ask the barman to tell you a joke 🤣
K. S.
Fantastically light breading and perfectly fried. Ordered the cod and the plaice. Cod was best, flaky, flavorful. Plaice was a little softer and mild tasting. Chips were spot on, service was prompt and professional. Prices reasonable in the restaurant side, a little lower at the very busy walk up window. This place is popular and well reviewed for a reason. Whether you walk up and take your fish or sit in the restaurant, prepare for a very good meal.
H.
Worker was typically Scottish who grumbles as people walked through the door, made us chuckle. Proper pub, staff were class.
D. M.
Cozy and super friendly staff and and patrons. Met great people from all over the world. Had 4 cask beers tapped!
S. M.
Really tiny really quaint but ok gor a guiness in the middle of a long flight of stairs
R. N.
Such a lovely little pub. Hidden with true local flavor. Loved it. They have really good fresh beers and all regular whiskies, plus a very friendly crowd around and behind the bar. This is my favourite in Edinburgh. Always reliable and good.
A. R. A. M. (.
The ambiance is really good. Loved the wee street which leads to this place. Takes you back to the 18th century.
M. M.
Marvelous little bar one third of the way up the steps between rear of Waverley station and the Royal Mile. A true institution of a place. Tiny interior with seating for about twenty and a small space at the bar. Four cask ales showcase Scottish beers, plus a limited menu does the same for Scottish food - haggis, stovies, etc. Pop in, it's recommended.
E. P.
Great place, small but nice traditional pub atmosphere, friendly bar man, welcoming
G. K.
Lovely wee pub with a nice atmosphere.
r. a.
Very friendly pub and bar tender, perfect spot to wait for your train or to have a chat.
S. E. L.
Excellent pub, staff friendly
p. G.
Nice place, nice atmosphere but more expensive than London
M. M. A. Z.
Nice Pub
Verry friendldy Baarkeeper and an old and lovely ambience
C. E.
Nice guy on the bar. We enjoyed our drinks.
E. M. H.
Cosy, good beer - perfect if you want a quick pint before you catch the last train.
F.
Tiny pub with awesome service and selection of alcohol.
G. L.
Great place to enjoy a pint or a G&T. Very cosy. Want to go back to try the food. Super close to the train station.
C. L.
Real tradional pub and great music and service.
G. R.
Excellent pub, good ale good service well worth climbing the steps
M. R.
Great little pub in Edinburgh city centre, does a good selection of real ale, staff and customers are always friendly. This pub is doing real ale at £2.50 a pint for the near future for card carrying camra members.
J.
Great little pub with short but hearty menu. Loved it
H. P.
Lovely little pub in the heart of Edinburgh. If you get chance to pop in do. You'll not regret it!
G. E.
The only drawback to this pub is it's so small, it's often difficult to get a seat. Still worth it though.
D. E.
Stopped in for a bite and pint, but the grill was closed. They let us come in and have a seat until we could get sorted and they offered a few nearby places.
P. M.
Lovely friendly little pub, a real cosy feel to it.
R. H.
Best pub in Edinburgh. Small and cosy, good selection of beers as well.
P.
Absolutely lovely this place its so cute tucked away halfway up a staircase in an alley. If you are visiting Edinburgh for the Harry Potter vibe then it's a must visit. It's a small place so can be hard to get a table but really cosy and offering nice cheap food. Well worth a stop will definitely be going back.
B. B.
Good selection of ales. Comfortable and friendly. They did have a couple hot entrees available. Didn't try any food but it smelled good.
J. F.
Friendly staff snd nice wee place for a pint or three 🍺🍺🍺
N. W.
Nice little place . Cosy stop off half way up long stairway. Nice beer. No music.
I. V.
Tucked in the Fleshmarket Close, this tiny pub is worth a stop when visiting Edinburgh. Also, find it on the Lothians Pub Crawl map, one pub down, about 200 to go.
O. B.
Awesome vibe, the bartender was really nice. We ended up speaking with some other patrons from England and Minnesota.
A. S.
Always quick service and a handy wee stop on the way to the station, clientele always friendly too.
N. M.
Great drinks and friendly bartender.
g. s.
By far my favourite pub and I make a special effort to go there every time I go back home to Scotland.
A brilliant little place which is very cosy, serve great beers, some of the best haggis (sorry mum) and good people. Even better, it's close to Waverley.
T. a. l. i. F.
A great wee pub up Fleshmarket close. Handy for a drink before you catch your train. Shut at the moment because of the pandemic but looking forward to visiting again soon.
S. H.
Nice little back street bar with a local feel 👌
E. E.
It is nice and cozy, perfect for a beer when solo. Has a small terrace and accepts cards.
S. M.
Small tourists and locals there during my visit small bar area good beers on offer
C. L.
Great cask beer selection. Very chill atmosphere. And cool location.
D. I.
Pretty and cosy place, my husband and I love it!
D. K. (. T.
Good vibes and friendly staff, they serves more for the price, i was starving but it’s filling enough for me
It’s absolutely worth to come by here on freezing winter days
I wish i could be back here with my family sometime soon
감사합니다 :)
R. W.
Always a worthwhile spot to visit, assuming there's space to get in, and a good reason to brave the Royal Mile horde. Popular with locals and tourists alike and pouring several Real Ales with food (other than crisps) also available. Sometimes there's a smell from the toilets, but this is to be expected given the age of the pub and neighbourhood.
J. W.
Lovely little pub, always well run and with excellent beer. Not afflicted with loud music. Too small for a Big Party. Ideal for a social chat, and you may find some interesting company there.
T. M.
A very cosy little pub tucked away in Edinburgh. A very nice atmosphere in the pub with a surprising amount of seating for its size, although I'm not sure if it could cope with too many people. I don't think this place specialises in food, but basic pub food was served. Lots of nice references to the local area as well.
A. A.
Very small but quaint pub average price for beers
I. S.
Wonderful. Very cozy pub. The food such as the haggis and smoked haddock pie are top notch. They have just switched over to ales from the Broughton brewery. All in top condition. The 80 shillings was consumed several times.
D. R.
Great beer and good food.
P. B.
Great beer. Lovely Malt of the month.
F. I.
Easily one of the most memorable moments of our trip to Scotland. The staff is wonderful and welcoming. We sat here for hours without even a second thought to where else we could be spending our time. I hope we can go back soon and stop in for a quick visit :)
M. C.
Great place! The location and the tininess of the place do the perfect atmosphere, drink beer and whiskey here are really enjoyable. Funny to found n.3 doors in just 1 metre distance to get in the bathroom 😬
K. J.
Great little pub. Spent time there yesterday before catching train home. Very friendly regulars, wonderful atmosphere, had plenty of laughs. Would definitely recommend if you like a traditional pub and want to feel like a local.
M. M.
Good things come in small packages .small pub with big personality. Great beer choice , great atmosphere, great bar staff . No 1 on my list of pubs to visit when we are in Edinburgh
E. G.
Once you leave Waverley Station via the Market Street exit, take a walk up the steep steps and, before you reach The Royal Mile (about halfway up, unsurprisingly), you'll arrive at one of the smallest pubs in Edinburgh. Small, seemingly insignificant, but full of great character and a good choice of beers. And if you're hungry, I can highly recommend the Cullen Skink soup too. Delicious.
W. M.
The best pub lunch in town, give the haggis a go and ask for the whisky of the day!
T. P.
What a lovely little traditional pub. Apparently, the smallest in Edinburgh but selling four real ales and, of course, offering a wonderful selection of Scottish malt. The menu was interesting, offering some Scottish gems such as haggis with trimmings and, a favourite of mine, stovies. Definitely worth 5 *.
H. B.
Although this pub is tiny, the prices are reasonable and the staff are friendly. The soup smells absolutely amazing and I wish I had tried some. Definitely a place to pop into on your way up the stairs.
M. M.
We loved this place! It was small and cosy but also with a bit of liveliness as well. My husband and I visited and were able to strike up a group conversation that included a local as well as other out-of-country visitors. Along with good drinks, what more could a person want out of a travel experience?
P. O.
Long established pub..one of the first to offer meals back in the day.decent place to watch TV footy
J. M.
Great little pub with a variety of long pulls. Close to the rail station, but tucked enough away to not get too many tourists. Food is available, but we enjoyed only the beer
S. J.
Quaint pub, small but big on character, had a pint of Stewart's craft ale followed by haggis neeps and tatties for dinner, if your need Edinburgh Waverley railway station it's worth searching this pub out
D. M. X. r.
Very good bar
Nice atmosphere
T. K.
My favourite wee pub in Edinburgh. Just behind Waverley Station on Fleshmarket Close. The setting for an Ian Rankin novel. Does nice Scottish bar food. Cullen Skunk, Haggis neeps and tatties, steak and ale pie etc. Usually 4 or 5 real ales on tap and good selection of whiskies. Prices very reasonable. Small though. Is the smallest pub in Edinburgh but brilliant!
C. B.
The Halfway House is one of the first pubs you will encounter after leaving Waverley Station. It is small but is worth a visit for its quirky charm. It can get busy, but is one of those places you just need to visit at least once.
M. K.
I enjoy the ale that is served in this bar, they always have 4 different ales to choose from. I like to stop here to start my visit to Edinburgh as it is, as its name suggests, Halfway, up an old stairway into the old town of Edinburgh when coming from the direction of Waverley Station's side entrance.
N. A.
Lovely little place to stop for a drink and have a bite to eat. Great selection of Ale and very good quality food! Enjoy!
M. P.
Nice little boozer, good recommendations on the beer and helpful staff! Interesting touch with the wee jars under the taps that let you see the depth of colour of the ales available!
S. M.
A really small pub that fills quickly but usually has a great atmosphere. For it's modest size, this pub has a great selection of beer available and a reasonably stocked jukebox. The location of this pub is both a blessing and a hinderance: it is tucked away from the lively crowds of the Royal Mile, but this also means a treck through a usually disgusting smelling lane to get there. Nevertheless, this is a good pub and is definitely recommended.
G. R.
A cracking real pub. Bit cozy size wise but that's the great thing. No option but to meet people .Plenty soul-less barns in vacinity if that's your thing but your missing out. Beer is great BTW. Can't comment on food
G. T.
Stopped in for a pint before catching the bus back the airport (boo!) and found a very cosy little pub with plenty of choice. Beers, whisky etc, they even have food, despite the place being so tiny. Didn’t eat but it smelled good.
R. C.
Great pub, located close to Waverley station - great for a quick pint between trains. Food smells lovely - don't be surprised if you end up ordering some even if you didn't plan too!
R. C.
First visit to this tiny traditional pub 2 minutes from the station, well kept beer and a decent bite to eat, friendly bar staff and regulars. Nice little boozer.
M. E.
Great wee place , good food, good choice of beers and whisky. But, please keep it quiet, it's the smallest pub in Edinburgh so, we don't want it to get too popular!😃😃😃🚴♂️🛐🛐
P. P.
Amazingly cozy, tiny little bar with a great whisky selection. A gem within the touristy surroundings of Edinburgh. Much recommended.
D. M.
Great tiny wee pib half way up the steps between Waverley station and Cockburn Street. Always has a good range of beers. Always busy, but it's not difficult to fill.
G. P.
Good place for a pint and a wee rest if you want an excuse after walking up the stairs from the waverly station. No excuses required. Enjoy your pint 🍻
G. D.
Great wee Pub to experience authentic Edinburgh ambience. 4 Real Ales, constantly changing; malt of the month plus all the usual offerings. Tourists welcomed.
K. M.
Great place to meet great atmosphere
E. M.
Perfect place for a haggis. Cozy and traditional
R. J.
Really unique place to drink. The claim of the pub being one of the smallest places to drink in Edinburgh means it can be difficult to get a table but it never seems to get that busy, which helps.
N. B.
Been here many times. Greate food. Brilliant selection of beer. Nice staff. Lovely local people. The place to be.
J. C.
Great wee pub tucked out of the way, fantastic beers and Whiskies. Good food and friendly staff make it a cracking wee place.
J. S.
Choice of good Scottish ales with the option if buying a paddle of 3 tester ales at a third of a pint each. Good local character called George
S. K.
Extreamly good as always. The best pub in Edinburgh for me. ;-)
E. H.
Quaint but very small pub located halfway up a killer stairway. Good place for a rest if the steps are too much. Good beer. Friendly staff.
N. Y.
Great location and atmosphere. Decent real ale selection. I wouldn't plan to hang out there for the evening but it's a fun place to stop by for a pint!
P. B.
Nice range of local ales and a real old fashioned atmosphere. Very intimate due to its small size but it wasn't too busy when we ducked in here to escape the rain! ☔
C. D.
Pleasant small pub serving a good choice of real ales. It was nice to find a real pub catering for locals but still very close to the touristy area.
S. D.
Edinburgh's smallest and possibly oldest pub. Great real ales which for me is a must. Love the atmosphere. A must visit.
c. s.
Great little pub. Excellent beer, good food and friendly staff.
D. T.

A. T.
Lovely wee pub. Great atmosphere and cold beer.
T. F.
Friendly, cosy great atmosphere. George is the heart of the half way house. Food is great and reasonably priced. Always worth a visit.
I. G.
Decent old boozer with good grub like stovies haggis etc.
Only bad thing is they have a major fly problem, every time I've been there I'm swatting them while sipping my beer.
r.
An oasis of calm (sometimes) in a busy city.
K. H.
Whilst other pubs may declare otherwise, in my opinion this is Edinburgh’s original tiny pub. To find it walk down Cockburn Street until you spot the entrance to Waverley Station down an alley and head down the stairs. CAMRA members get 50p off a pint. Cosy bar with traditional good food.
O. S.
Small pub in the middle of the street, if you are lucky enough to get a table, it's a nice place to spend an hour of your time in Edinburgh.
D. L.
Nice and cosy pub placed in a picturesque close of the royal mile, good selection of beers and delicious Scottish food.
R. S.
A very cozy place where you can stop, relax and enjoy a very good beer. if you are in Edinburgh and you are passing by, just stop and enjoy your break.

This is the best tiny pub you'll ever visit! Cullen sink soup and a few beers.. Good times 😎
G. M.
Great little find. Great beer and selection of Malt Whiskey. Cannot wait to go back next time in Edinburgh

Staff excellant Beer excellant. Price very good. Local "Sue" horrible. So go there when Sue is not there. 3 stars should be 4.

Great beers and service. Never fails to hit the spot
Gents toilets are clean just a bit tired though and need a makeover.
P. M.
