Reviews of Kay’s Bar
N. H.
Fabulous small bar with attentive staff. A proper pub to relax in off the main drag, nice, quiet and relaxing with a good crowd.
M. F.
I spent one night in this bar that was one of the best nights of my life. Friendly bar staff and the local people made me feel so welcome. Love 😍 the fact dogs are allowed in. Only problem is there is not much space as downstairs is quite small however if you enjoy a quick pint like me then give it a visit. ♥ 😊 😎 🏴 🇺🇦.
G. M.
My last visit here was 10 years ago and it was wonderful, so it was with trepidation that I set foot in this time , with the fear of it having perhaps changed or heaven forbid modernised !!…. To my delight it was exactly the same lovely people both behind the bar and customers… beer was excellent and I know for a fact it’s not going to be another 10 years til my next visit … one of my very favourite pubs in the UK 👍👍👍👍👍
I. W.
A delightful city oasis. A genuine locals' bar, pleasingly almost unchanged after over 30 years. Great staff. Excellent selection of beers and whisky, and presumably other spirits. Worth a detour, as they say.
K. C.
Great wee bar, very friendly and welcoming staff and clientel. Lovely selection of fine ales on cask and keg. I wish the prices were a little less, but I guess that's a sign of the times :)) Great night down the pub
R. B.
It's a gem. Well hidden making it more of a mystery. Tiny old pub on a cobbled street. Just very good beer and chatter. Well known by those in the know. A must for good beer and pub fans if in the city.
C. H.
A hard to find small bar but worth the effort. Excellent beer selection. Warm and comfortable. Locals a little unfriendly though
C. G.
This is the pub for the New Town elite. The customer base is very up market. An excellent selection of malt whiskies and draught beers along with the unique decor make this bar a member of the Edinburgh top ten.
K. H.
A little pub with a big story ...come in, sit down and by the time you have enjoyed a second pint of cask conditioned ale you'll be a part of it.
K. M.
A singular authentic pub with a local clientele and an olde worldwide feel. This bar never gets too busy, and is full of authentic beers and locals, or those Edinburghers who have discovered its charm. Old barrels are on display, there is a real coal fire and a scuttle, and to the rear is a small room comprising three more tables which include the availability of board games.
You can tell this is a really old building because the stone frame around the window in this rear is 2 ft thick and is covered with an old velvet cushion on the sill. Plenty space for sitting.
A beautifully ornate pub tucked away in a forgotten place and time, and wonderfully so.
Y. P.
This is a class wee pub. Prompt service, excellent selection of beers, friendly staff and a great atmosphere.
R. T.
Good bevy, good craic. Be ready to give as good as you get… the natives are restless but friendly. If your out on the lash, Kay’s is a huv tae!
M. M.
This is still the perfect local. Only problem is it's size. But great beer. Warm atmosphere.
B. T.
Cosy pub/bar with good service and friendly staff. Great for casual drinks or final drinks to end the night.
J.
Best pub in Scotland. Feels like youre sitting in a living room and sipping your favourite drink with your friends.
T. R.
A lively wee hidden gem very traditional and cosy..Nice staff and chilled defo worth a visit
T. N.
Great fun place. To bad it had to close so early. I'm not sure why the Gov thinks Covid comes out after 10:30? That's just dumb. Would love to go back.
T. A.
Small cosy friendly pub staff beer good
R. W.
Very friendly. Good atmosphere. Was a bit pricey considering its on the outskirts of the city.
J. M.
Great pub, feel like a local while being a tourist...
n. s.
Incredible, tiny, unique pub - a real hidden gem
F. B.
Fantastic pint and a lovely atmosphere to relax in.
J. L.
One of the best pubs in New Town, great cosy atmosphere and good selection of Real Ales. Apparently their Guinness is famous for its quality too
M. V.
Absolutely love this bar and the barman was amazing. We stayed there until close and he was just lovely to us. Top 3 of my favourite bars in Edinburgh without a doubt.
D. W.
Great little pub with beer !
P. R.
Top bar in Edinburgh just off the beaten track. Evening drinking a blast. One of my favourite places to be. Highly Recommended
I. M.
Great little pub packed with atmosphere. And a quirky set of beer barrels that are sized using the Fibonacci series! (See photo!)
B. B.
A MUST in Edinburgh. Super authentic & cozy pub with kind patrons and attentive and fun bartenders. It was so warm and cozy, with generous wine pours for the price. The lentil soup was DELICIOUS. Thank you for welcoming us into your neighborhood bar! We will definitely be back.
S. H.
Great little bar, fantastic local pale and amazing whiskey . The manager gave us a talk on some of his spirit's and was very generous with his time
J. P.
A classic Edinburgh bar that has been on its present site forever. Always a selection of great beers and whiskies plus a cosy fireplace that's always lit on cold nights. Small inside and can get busy. There's a nice library room at the back but this can be slightly awkward as it's right outside the ladies toilet. If you like old style pubs then you must visit this Edinburgh institution.
P. M.
Legendary wee pub. Quite hard to find (but that's probably a good thing since it's so teeny). Easily one of my favourite pubs in the New Town. Turn up early evening and you might get a free sandwich ;-) Dog friendly, and people friendly too :-)
J. W.
An excellent pub a quiet pint
S. S.
Possibly the finest urban pub in the world. Everything I look for in a great pub; excellent beer, great conversation, solid whisky selection, fireplace, and pub dogs. I've never eaten there, so can't speak for the food. But the atmosphere is outstanding.
G. W.
A hidden gem, well worth the effort finding
N. M.
Regularly go here. Proper beer, full of proper drinkers. Not to be missed. It's a small place tucked away and quaint. Never disappoints. Good pub for the rugby. Better to go with small groups, definitely not for coach loads.
S. B.
It's hard to praise this place highly enough. Full of character, cosy, with a great range of cask (more often than not, I've found Jarl from Fyne Ales on) and keg, all served impeccably. Seems like a locals' bar, very friendly and welcoming. On my most recent visit they were showing Six Nations rugby.
A. Q.
Quirky little Bar off the beaten track. Been there many times, a tradition at this point along with the Oxford Bar.
M. K.
Fantastic traditional pub. High quality ales and a wide selection of premium spirits served in a friendly and inviting environment. The building has a great deal of character and there is a high level of service. Truly great.
G. P.
Rare sort of pub you won't find many like it.
This is a small, traditional, pub with service that matches the atmosphere.
Large selection of drinks to meet the needs of anyone. Service that stands out from many other pubs.
J. H.
Every time I visit this place it reminds me of a fairy woodland cottage.
Good ales good cheap wholesome plain pub grub steak pie chips and beans £5.75 when I visited as part of my 70th birthday Edinburgh pub crawl. 7 miles in total 8 pubs.
This was a welcome ale and scran stop. Pop on and enjoy cheers.
J. V.
Perhaps the perfect little local pub. Love the atmosphere. Great choice of drinks and the local dog is super cute. The food is reasonably priced. A pie costs about 6 gbp.
M. L.
I had a very generously poured glass of cheap Malbec appropriately priced. It's a very old very traditional pub not some new fangled chain affair. And it's situated on a local "non through" road. Worth a visit.
D. G.
Nice Friendly bar, well kept selection of ales.
E. N.
One of Edinburghs secret little gems. A great wee snuggled pub situated inbetwwe the town and Stockbridge. Good old fashioned and in winter if you can get a place next to the fireplace then you won't want to leave.
G. O.
This was a little Gem found by accident when out for a stroll and now etched into the memory banks so we can find it again .
this is a old traditional pub now getting a bit of a rarity well worth finding and enjoying a drink I have no doubt We will be back to enjoy the ambience of the great pub.
A. W.
Cozy little pub tucked away in Edinburgh's Newtown area. Well worth seeking out. Nice selection of Gins and Real ales compliment the usual pub fare. Helpful and friendly staff.
S. L.
This place is real Edinburgh history, I don't think its changed a bit in 40 yrs...Great real beers, quirky, interesting staff... I wanted to give it a 5 but the New Town locals can be a little territorial and cliquey... (he he I'm one of them !)
G. R.
Excellent New Town pub with a great range of beers, whiskies and gins. A real local's pub where you can rub shoulders with the residents of Edinburgh's New Town. Not a tourist trap.
S. M.
I can't tell you why I like it so much, except that I've been drinking here since I was at school , and it's supposed to be a secret so the last thing I should do is post all that here.... . friendly staff, amazing selection of beers and whiskies, don't go. It is supposed to be a secret...
B. J.
Great little old style pub. Loads of character & a lovely roaring real fire.
Good selection of real ale beer & malt whiskey.
Friendly bar staff.
R. D.
A smashing wee pub. A brilliant authentic atmosphere it's also cozy and really friendly. This is my new favourite bar for a pint!
A. S.
I wasn't sure I should review this bar because it is Edinburgh's best kept secrete. However I did once see it in an easyjet magazine.. What can I say, it's the smallest, cosiest traditional pub we can offer, luckily off the beaten track. Hopefully you'll never find it and it will remain a secrete..:-)
P. H.
Been to this bar on many occasions in the past, but on this occasion took the dog. A nice little bar with good banter from the locals. Definitely recommend it.
R. P. W.
I highly recommend this welcoming, friendly little bar in Edinburgh's New Town.
P. O.
Lovely pub selling great ales. If you like ales then it's hard to knock. A bit out of the way but this means few tourists.
V. J.

An little gem not far from the centre. We'll worth a walk out to it. Warm, welcoming with a real fire great beer selection.
A. P.
Small, cosy bar. Good service, good beer but slightly overpriced. When all is said and done, it is a small back street pub.
B. M.
Great wee local pub. If you are down the New Town and fancy a pint. Well worth looking in
D. P.
Love this wee bar!
j. h.
I'm afraid too many Brits don't understand the meaning of expensive or, especially, too expensive. I'm sitting in Kay's enjoying one of the best pints in Edinburgh - Theakston Best, now again, thankfully, brewed in Masham - and it was £3.50. Quite frankly, that's a bargain.
P. M.
Very good local pub with good choice of real ales, cosy place with a coal fire in winter.
J. A.
A truly local establishment. In addition to the bar, there are a few small tables to gather around and a back room with board games for those interested.
