Reviews of Old Bell Inn
M. P.
Really nice authentic pub with a great atmosphere! We discovered it by accident one evening and decided to give it a try. Oh boy, we were not disappointed. We liked it so much that we came back a second time during our stay in Edinburgh. The first evening we tried the haggis from their menu (my girlfriend had the veggie option). Both meals were so delicious (the pepper sauce is to die for)! The second evening we ordered both the veggie haggis. Compliments to the chef! Also, the staff was very attentive! The young guy behind the bar recommended a really tasty and smooth whiskey. All in all, an awesome experience.
L. W.
The staff is amazingly kind, good beer and beautiful food. I just love the atmosphere as well.

If you could visit just one Pub in your life, this one is your choice. A beatiful building, a nice interior, a great variety of beers, good food and a friendly staff.

What a lovely little gem of a place we found while out on our walk in the Newington area today. As soon as we stepped in the place, it already had a friendly atmosphere and the decor was absolutely beautiful.
I would imagine this place has a lot of history to it! wouldn't be surprised if Drew Pritchard suddenly visited on a hunt for some antique beauties! We unfortunately didn't get any food but it looked soo delicious and we will definitely be back to have some.
H. R.
Fantastic place. Great ambience and comfortable... when you can get a seat, that is! For the place was busy, and reservations were clearly recommended. We got lucky, however, and were able to get a seat without a prior booking.
The food was very good. I had haggis, neaps and tatties and would score it 10/10. The other half had an enormous fish and chips which tasted great... but the chips were only warm-ish. A solid 8/10 there, then.
What made the place really exceptional, however, was the staff. Friendly and welcoming and always professional, they allowed us to open a tab without knowing us or ever asking for ID or credit card details. They just trusted us, which was good for all parties as it made it very easy for us to order additional drinks or food items! A simple settling up as we left concluded a very happy visit. Thoroughly recommended.

Great pub experience, lovely food and great beers! Also friendly and extremely helpful staff. Would definitely recommend it, it may be wise to book at weekends or for meals...
M. M.
Really cosy pub, proper Scottish experience! Go upstairs where they also offer live music on certain days in the week!
S. H.
A friendly and welcoming pub with a fair selection of beers, lagers and whiskies and a limited menu.
On our visit this evening (28/04/22) my wife and I both chose the steak pie, one with chips one with mash, and both with vegetables. The mash was underseasoned, the carrots over cooked, the parsnips undercooked. The gravy in the topped pie was like water and my wife's pie contained 8/9 herb stems. This was mentioned to a member of staff when the plates were collected but all he could mutter was "that's not very good is it" and that was the last we heard about it.
It's worth popping into the pub for a drink but I'd think twice about eating there.
D. H.
Nice atmosphere and good food at a reasonable price. Staff really helpful. Well worth a visit.
P. K.
Brilliant decoration that really marks this place out as a pub of great distinction. Ye oldie pub atmosphere and pleasant bar staff with a great range of ale.
I. S.
Nice cosy little place in the Mayfield area just outside the centre of Edinburgh. Decent ales and some lovely food. The Balmoral Chicken and Haggis, neeps & tatties pictured here were both served with a peppercorn whisky sauce and were very tasty indeed.
E.
Fantastic food, staff and a lovely cosy atmosphere. We were staying in a B&B up the road and we came here for a late dinner at 7. It was a cosy kind of busy that's not overwhelming. I had the halloumi burger and it was amazing. Normally restaurants salt the halloumi to the point of a sore mouth but it was perfect as well as the fries. Overall all very nice. 👍
P. R.
Lovely old feel bar with bags of character. Nicely laid out and has a great atmosphere. Lovely friendly efficient staff.
C. 5.
We popped in there after visited the Rosslyn Chapel. Really had a nice and calm time there. All staffs especially chief lady were very thoughtful and kind for us. We also enjoyed various kind of scotch, gin and beer! Foods are also perfect!!!! We would like to visit there in next time too.
J. H.
The staff are friendly and the meals were good.
I mistakenly gave one of the staff an extra ten pounds when I paid the bill and he came over to my table with the ten pounds. I thanked him for his honesty and gave him a tip. I would definitely go back and company should be proud to have such reliable and honest people working for them. Well done to the staff.
V. L.
Awesome, we had haggis, bangers, haddock and steak pie…absolutely delicious. Staff and premises were great as well. Will come back
M. C.
Looked after us so well. Not been there for a long time but really enjoyed ourselves. Friendly and efficient staff. Great evening. Thanks for looking after us.
J. D.
Very cute and cosy, traditional pub, enjoyed the beautiful Christmas decorations
A. A. R.
A charming classic pub with a very nice atmosphere. The food was quite nice and the staff was very helpful.
We had to change one of the burger brioche because of a dairy intolerance. The kitchen was quite helpful and put the effort to make a substitute using regular bread and cutting the edges round. Thanks
T. N.
Had lunch there with husband. Steak pie, very salty gravy and meat. Did not enjoy. Will go back for a drink not to eat
L. W.
First time here, food was excellent, good choice of beers, will definitely visit again
L. D.
Friendly staff, excellent food. We had the haggis bon bons, fish and chips and the cheese board all of which were lovely
M. Z.
Feels filled with history; charming with dark wood, leather benches and old art on the walls. Food is quite good too, and service is very friendly.
P. D.
Lovely inn offering a pleasant atmosphere, good food and cold beer.
M. D.
It was my first time tasting Haggis in Scotland and it was really delicious! I was given a recommendation by my professor to try Haggis at this place and I was not disappointed at all. It took kinda long to serve the Haggis but it's worth the wait. The waiters were also very friendly. Very recommended!
T. m.
Great value food and drinks (rib-eye steak was gorgeous) Fantastic for sport, but also a family feel. The manageress gave us dessert on the house as we were celebrating a birthday. We will defo be back!
K. K.
Lovely pub, pleasant staff and a relaxed atmosphere.
D. H.
Great food. The chips were absolutely fantastic. The lamb and haggis burger was brilliant too. From a Londoner who will definitely be back soon.
B. J.
Very chill, laid-back vibe, with a great selection of rotating cask ales. The haggis, neeps, & tatties were fantastic.
j. f. (.
Had a meeting there and as it was the very first time. It's a wee gem, quiet, the staff friendly and helpful. It was early afternoon, so I'm presuming the usual traffic would be in later! I'm hoping to return and taste their food! Thank you
C. W.
Wonderful atmospheric pub. Staff friendly, welcoming and so helpful. The food was excellent and would highly recommend the haggis, neeps and tatties!!
D. H.
I always pop in while in Edinburgh. Never disappointed, great Beer, Food and Staff.
Introduced my Brother to it this week and he is raving about it too.
A.
Cosy local, great staff, good choice of wines too
G. C.
If you're looking for a freindly bar near the Meadows in Edinburgh you should check this place out. I highly recommend a visit here, you will always get a good welcome from the bar staff and be able to enjoy the great food beer and spirits avalable.

Our last knight in Edinburgh. We got booked in online at old Bell inn.
Superb food and a beautiful pint of local Ale.
Recommend to anyone to book in for pint and home made food.
Many thanks
M. D.
Delicious food, affordable and good pub spirit
S. G.
Fantastic pub, staff very efficient helpful and friendly
T. B.
Lovely bar, friendly staff and good food. Very impressed with the food ❤
A. C.
Great pub and lovely food. Welcoming and very friendly staff, loved our Friday night here in a recent trip to a nearby B&B. Cullen Skink highly recommended!
M. B.
Super nice pub! We ordered fish and chips and lamb and haggis burger and it was delicious. Also they were super attentive to allergies!
F. V.
Had to lower my rating from 4 to 3 stars. This pub has always been a firm favourite with me and my colleagues - great atmosphere, screens to watch sport, and genuinely friendly staff. We were, unfortunately, let down by the food on our last visit. Cajun chicken burger = a bun topped with a chicken fillet, and a side salad. Yup, that's it.
Do pay them a visit for the atmosphere, but consider skipping the meal...
S. K.
Nice, friendly, cosy great pint, great pub!
P. O.
Good local with wide range of ales & good place to watch sport
F. B.
Lovely welcoming pub, great food and friendly staff. Highly recommended
G. B.
Lovely steak dinner and nice cozy warm atmosphere in the main bar.
T. C.
Lovely selection of beers
Great atmosphere
S. M.
Very good. Decent grub.
S. K.
Love your local. This pub certainly is what they had in mind when they came up with that slogan. Good pints, good company and sublime food.
The bar staff are very attentive and will go above the odds to keep your customer needs satisfied.
Special shoutout to the bar staff Max and Sarina for keeping us well fed and watered whilst also providing top notch service with a smile.
S. E.
Great food and friendly staff well worth a visit.
M. C.
Nice cozy pub! We have been there for a Pub Quiz (every Monday @ 7.30 pm) and we had a lot of fun. The place is quiet but vivid, nice people around and good music. Dog friendly place.
We didn't have any food but seeing other customer eating and their food looked and smelled delicious!
R. K.
Wonderful food, great drinks, good atmosphere. Will visit again ! Second floor if it gets congested. A great start to our holiday.
K. L.
Great Edinburgh pub!!! Amazing atmosphere and great food!!!
J. L. M. G.
This place was amazing. The bar staff was so nice and welcoming. I particularly want to give a mention to Eliza. Aylee was nice too. The staff makes it worth while, had a great time watching the scotland england game.
W. L.
Lovely food and atmosphere, friendly staff and great choice of music! Thanks for a great night out with the Mrs! 😃
F. S.
Visited on the recommendation of out guest house owner....very impressed and we visited twice and both times the food was excellent, beers and wine were excellent and atmosphere was warm and friendly.
The landlady said they would recommend here and she was right. Prices were good as well. Not crazy for something of a very good standard. Visited a more well know location on a previous evening and this pub food blew it away for quality quantity and service. Forget going all the way into the city to get ripped off and charged crazy prices. Go here to the Old Bell Inn and have a damn good meal and a pint.
J. N.
Great fish and chips but the service was a bit surley. Interesting IPA. A Scotland victory topped it off.
M. C.
Local pub charm. Decent food but not amazing. Service a bit slow. Monday night pub trivia.
K. M.
Busy downstairs on a Friday night with live music but the upstairs restaurant was quiet. Helpful barman happy to chat or leave you to it. I had the haggis pockets followed by a steak, recommend both. The toilets were so immaculate they looked to have been installed only that afternoon.
D. S.
An excellent old fashioned proper pub
R. W.
Was recommended to us by our guest house but found other pubs that were friendlier and with a better food offering. The old world feel to the pub was a little too dingy and dark for me but would probably suit me better in winter if there are open fires.
A. W.
Lovely food, pub quiz was on which provided a great atmosphere. Good staff
S. W.
Great evening with colleagues from Historic Environment Scotland👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
J. H. U.
Good local pub. Not touristy or trying to be something else. Far better than the history themed pubs in central Edinburgh.
A bit off the beaten track if you aren't local, but this is a small enough city for the pub to be within walking distance of the Royal Mile.
All the traditional pub food, plus a few extras. The burgers (both beef and chicken) are amongst the best we've ever had.
C. S.
Perfekt. Great location, very Good food and friendly people. We will Airways come back!
G. S.
I just arrived in Edinburgh as a part of my journey around the UK. I wanted something to eat so went into the nearest pub, 'The old bell inn'. I was greeted with a friendly face of a lady with a broken wrist.
She sat me down and brought me a menu. I ordered a starter and a main. The main I ordered came out without the starter, so I queried about the starter. The lady could apologise enough and offered a pudding on the house. I said that was not necessary, but I got it anyway.
The hospitality was second to none. I thank the team for their friendliness.

Very well maintaned great wee pub
A. G.
Tldr: children not welcome after 8pm. Decent traditional pub if you fancy a beer but not a family eating place.
Booked online after seeing pub on a documentary. Arrived at 7pm and was instantly told children could not stay after 8pm. Decided to stay, pub food was pub food nothing amazing nothing terrible, though the cesar salad was not the freshest and the sauce was probably bottled. Paid by card and machine took me down the tipping route (which i hate). Otherwise lively traditional pub type pub but not for a family eat.
S.
Great pub with reasonably priced food; the burger and haggis were delicious. Very friendly staff who were happy to share their local gin recommendations.
Would certainly return when next in Edinburgh!
Y. O.
We had dinner here on our first night in Edinburgh. It was recommended by our B&B hosts, and it was just a short walk away. The restaurant/pub is very cozy and the outside is gorgeous with all the flowers. The food was very good and my husband enjoyed his beer. Servers were friendly.
D. B.
We loved the Old Bell Inn so much that we ate there 3 nights in a row when we recently visited Edinburgh! The beef and ale pie was tasty, the smoked haddock was sublime, and salmon was terrific.
....an interesting story here...I guess the publican had a bunch of his golf buddies in for a few pints. They were telling stories, and the stories got, let's say, "a bit more interesting" as the pints were quaffed, not to mention the language! My husband and i were getting quite a kick out of listening to them. We didn't really take notice at the time, but I guess their publican friend told the assembled group to lower their voices, as the conversation became muted. When we asked our wait staff person for another couple of drinks, she informed my husband and me that the "gentlemen at the next table wanted to buy us our drinks as they feared they had been too disruptive..."! We were so surprised and quickly got up to toast all 8 or 9 of them when we received our drinks. We told them they were quite entertaining and proceeded to chat with them for a few minutes....What a great and memorable experience. We'll return to this friendly, cozy, traditional pub again when we return to Scotland!
C. O.
Great atmosphere. Bar staff top notch
T. 1.
Good food good beer good vibes good Christmas decorations good staff .
Y. K.
Very nice place, great food, good selection of whiskies. Better make an online reservation, because it is very popular also with the locals. Try the Haggis it is very good. Steak or burgers are as well very good.
t. r.
We were staying at a B&B in the neighborhood and just wanted to have a meal and a beer. Food was fantastic and the beer was not like I had in the States. When we weren't sight-seeing we were there. Visiting a warm and friendly neighborhood pub was my main goal when we arrived in Scotland. Thank you!
C. P.
Very pleasant atmosphere and very popular. Good crowd of people go there. Certainly trouble free. Excellent service. Good assortment of beers, wines spirits. Would definitely recommend the place.
J.
Been here a few times and even had a Christmas meal here. Great service and friendly staff
D. T.
For our first night in Edinburgh we choose to eat at Old Bell Inn. They had a massive influx of patrons on what was meant to be a quiet Monday night. The young waitress was running around attending to each and every customer with such a professional and friendly demeanor. Even with a lack of staff, the food was perfect. Everything still had good presentation and food that you wouldn't expect in a pub. Beautiful.
S.
Reasonably priced bar. Has quite a dark interior. The lighting is muted. Toilets are clean and there is ample seating. Have not tried the food so can not pass comment.
M. P.
Great spot for lunch if you're around Newington. The staff are friendly and the food is great. The Old Bell is an interesting pub, as it attracts all kinds - there are almost always friendly regulars propping up the bar, who are flanked by backpackers and the 9-to-5 crew depending on what time you go. The nachos come highly recommended.
H. B.
Good meal and nice cosy surroundings had lamb fillet which was on the tough side but they changed it with no problems to the lamb shank which was delicious . Everyone else at my table were very pleased with their meals. The staff were very attentive the meal was very reasonable. Would definitely go.back.
M. R.
Nice pub, good real ale.
A. B. (.
The Old Bell is a nice, cosy wee pub in the middle of a city. I attend the pub quiz with some friends, which is always good fun! Drinks and food are quite expensive, but the interior is quite interesting with the walls lined with every type of bell you can think of. And at least the pub isn't full of bell-ends... when we're not there.
S. L.
Relaxed, classic pub environment with charm outside and in. Decent food for a fair price. Poor cider selection. Staff always busy but at least friendly.
M. a.
Had bar lunch, 6th February. Haggis, Neeps & Tatties with whiskey sauce, very nice, sauce was amazing. Too big a portion though. Staff friendly.
B. S.
Had read reviews, certainly met expectations.
E. C.
If you find your self looking at the this pub to go for food or a drink, do it! The food was delicious, we had the steak on steak wednesdays, and the staff we fantastic.
G. F.
Various meals beautiful, good portions. Staff great.
N. A.
Service was nice, both people who were there at the moment we're really friendly (just after opening), the food was amazing, I ate the lean beef burger which in itself would get a 5/5 but unfortunately the onion rings which came with it were completely raw on the inside, therefore the 4/5 rating. I would definitely come back here though.
S. S.
I wish I could have stayed here all day. The atmosphere is perfect for a nice quiet drink. The food was amazing and it had the best pint in the city. When I come back to Edinburgh, it will be the first place I go.
R. T. W.
The Old Bell Inn is a busy and has an unusual layout with two entrances that are not inter-connected. We had a party of nine and had pre-booked to eat (essential). Dispite this the table wasn't ready with two small tables pushed together once cleared. Though very cramped, we just about managed.
Service was exceptional - many thanks to our 'Amy Pond' lookalike, who amazed us with her memory skills and remained cheerful and attentive dispite the pressures of working in such a busy environment.
Some of the food was a little over seasoned and my salmon was crispy and dry, however, the starters were all excellent as were the deserts. Overall, we enjoyed our meal at The Old Bell.
One complaint... We booked from the Internet where a Christmas menu was boldly promoted. Dispite it being December, this was not available when we arrived.
J. G. I.
What an amazing place, 10/10 would recommend. Great atmosphere, amazing service, and outstanding seating (very cozy and comfortable). Wonderful selection of beers and Malt Whiskies (Scotch). I cannot recommend this place enough.
E. B.
Beautiful and quiet pub. You can heve good food and relax here.
It's a 20 minutes walk from the city center but it worth a visit: it's much less crowded thant the pubs in the center and the food and services are much better.
E. S.
Lovely pub! Fantastic friendly and helpful staff. Food was good and we love that they are dog friendly. Kindly got us a bowl of water for our dog and made us feel relaxed and welcome.
G. K.
Good pub and great place to enjoy some haggis.
J. M.
Lovely wee old pub. Great atmosphere. Monday pub quiz nights.
F. M.
Full of people, character, well cooked Food!
C.
Went here during the week for lunch and had their steak and ale pie which was fantastic!! The service was good but there weren't many people when I was there. Would've definitely go back for dinner.
I. “. J.
My favourite pub in Edinburgh. The Old Bell Inn is what a pub should look and feel like, even on the outside the place looks beautiful, inside; wooden beamed ceiling, wood panelling, dimmed lighting and an inviting and friendly atmosphere.
The food is usually excellent and they offer a good range of regularly changing beers and ales on tap with regular mini beer festivals and tastings, all served by their fantastic staff! I really don't have a negative thing to say about this place, a perfect old fashioned pub I'm usually drinking in.
J. M.
If you want to catch the sun on a sunny day this is a real sun trap. Beer is good as is service.
J. G.
Perfect place for a delicious meal or drink - steak was perfect! Lovely friendly staff! (Felt very Covid safe as well)
A. S.
Totally in love with this old pub. Great atmosphere, tasty food, good choice of beers and spirits. Was there 2 times in a four-days stay in Edinburgh
R. G.
Decent beers, well kept and local. Usually have 5 or 6 on cask and change regularly enough. Food is standard pub grub but does the job.
s. l.
Cosy pub with good food.

(Translated) Definitely visit! The name is program! A bit away from the hustle and bustle of the city center, which was absolutely positive for us! No or few tourists, more like a neighborhood pub! Very cozy and super nice staff!
(Original)
Unbedingt besuchen! Der Name ist Programm! Etwas abseits des Trubels der Innenstadt, was aber für uns absolut positiv war! Keine bzw wenige Touristen, eher ein Pub der Nachbarschaft! Sehr gemütlich und super nettes Personal!

(Translated) Great cozy pub.
We ate here for 2 days and had a beer .
Had a great time
(Original)
Geweldig gezellige pub.
We hebben hier 2 dagen gegeten en een biertje gedronken .
Toppie tijd gehad

(Translated) Nice bar in the middle of what felt like hundreds of B&B. The decoration follows the name and that's why it is worth a detour and if you are really hungry, you will be well helped. There is still delicious, fresh warm food here even after 10 p.m. and there is a good thirst quencher in the pub anyway. Like most old Edinburgh pubs, you will find plenty of local craft beers and friendly staff.
(Original)
Nette Bar inmitten gefühlt hunderter B&B.

(Translated) Cozy pub with a lot of flat screens for sports enthusiasts - friendly, pleasant atmosphere, which is hardly affected by the TV. The selection of dishes is not overwhelming, but it tastes good - a visit was worth it
(Original)
M. C.
(Translated) Very nice pub with good food at reasonable prices. Haggis, fish and chips or burgers cost around £ 10

(Translated) Very nice pub. Few tourists, very friendly service. Delicious beer, good selection of whiskey and delicious food.

Sehr nettes pub. Wenig Touristen, sehr freundliche Bedienungen. Lecker Bier, gute Auswahl an Whiskey und lecker Essen.

(Translated) A typical Scottish pub, you can get to know other people quickly and the food (burger) was also great. The ale is a matter of taste.
(Original)
Ein typisches schottisches Pub, schnell kommt man mit anderen Leuten ins Gespräch und das Essen (Burger) war auch super. Das Ale ist Geschmackssache.

(Translated) We arrived a little late (after 9pm it's really late to eat in Scotland) but the kitchen was still open and they made us very kindly accommodate. Truly excellent meal and great beer. Not to mention the typical Scottish pub atmosphere.
(Original)
F. J.
(Translated) The frame is really a pub, decor, atmosphere ... It's beautiful. The cuisine is in the Scottish tradition. Waitresses smiling despite the big blow of wad around 20h ... The waiting time of the dishes is a little long but good quality dishes and well presented! Thank you
(Original)
Merci
C. R.
(Translated) Delicious super bar restaurant! Homemade do not hesitate !!!!

(Translated) Good pub with an authentic atmosphere and typical Scottish food. It is a bit far from the center (it is located in Newington between the two University of Edinburgh campuses), and therefore beaten by local and tourist clientele. A small hidden gem.
NB: as a pub, the environment is noisy. Children under the age of 18 cannot enter after 8pm.
(Original)
NB: in quanto pub, l'ambiente e' rumoroso. I bambini/ragazzi sotto i 18 anni non possono entrare dopo le 20.

(Translated) Great place to eat good food and accompany it with excellent beer! Abundant dishes rather sought after despite being a pub. Very "traditional" location which makes the atmosphere "very Scottish".
(Original)
Ottimo posto dove mangiare del buon cibo e accompagnarlo con ottima birra! Piatti abbondanti piuttosto ricercati nonostante sia un pub. Location molto "tradizionale" che rende l'atmosfera "very scottish".

(Translated) We only have hamburgers and beer. Super meat, at its point, very tasty, splendid. The typical British chips very good and the onion rings too. Recommended the lamb burger that I had not tried before and had a peculiar taste.
(Original)
Tomamos solo hamburguesas y cerveza. La carne estupenda, en su punto, muy sabrosas, esplendidas. Las chips típicas británicas muy buenas y los aros de cebolla también. Recomendable la hamburguesa de cordero que no la había probado antes y tenía un sabor peculiar.
