Very accommodating and a lovely atmosphere. Found ourselves here on a whim due to issues with our actual booked venue being closed when we arrived. Service was quick and friendly, very good selection of craft ales. Food was absolutely delicious, we did order sweet potato fries with my husbands steak but it came with the rustic fries. The gent serving us was apologetic and was quick to offer to ring them in for us. We said it was no problem we will just stick with the rustic fries and they were very tasty.

Very spacious place, decent cocktail selection and good range of beer/wine options. Food was tasty and well presented. The place is overall clean, friendly staff and quick service!

Visited this place after accidentally leaving it too late to go to any other restaurants as they had all closed, but very glad to have come! We both enjoyed the Scotsman burgers, which was very, very tasty. The chili jam gave it such a great flavour, and the chips were also very good. Also shared a raspberry mojito, which absolutely hit the spot. The atmosphere was that of a beer hall with the bench-tables, which I loved but may not be for everyone. We didn't stay long enough but I can imagine it would be a lovely place to hang and have drinks with friends after a long week. Definitely would visit again!

The mood of OX184 is very modern and young. One can have drinks till 3am but the kitchen is open till midnight. We got the pork steak and a couple of beers. The drinks were good, they have a daily special beer that one needs to ask info about. This time it was infused with some red fruits. The pork steak was definitely too fat and greasy. The fat part was too big and we discovered it only after pouring the butter on top. That's unfortunate. The staff was friendly anyway and we got a candy at the end.

The atmosphere is great but the food is only fine. The staff are pretty hit or miss as well, insisting we have a table tab instead of paying individually when ordering has led to some issues on their part. But as I said the atmosphere is great and spacious and they tolerate us playing a board game, so we'll keep going and spending money every Tuesday.

Great vibe, cosy. Was there for some drinks after a Christmas Night Out meal in Edinburgh with some of my work colleagues. We had a long table all to ourselves upstairs. It did take some time for the drinks to arrive each round but the place was busy. I liked their selection of craft ales, choices of gin, and my colleagues who were drinking cocktails were raving about them. The sting came the next day when we were divvying up our bill that one colleague had paid in full the night before, only to discover that we had been charged for part of a round of drinks that one of the waitresses had spilled over some of us when she lost control of her tray.

It was nice, went in on a busy Friday night and were just chatting when all of a sudden we got sprayed in the face. Turned out someone was cleaning the table upstairs and we were getting the splashback from it downstairs. That gave me the dry heave a bit. There was live music on and it was good but so so loud, we couldn't hear each other at all. The drinks were fine but fresh oj and soda was orange cordial so not what we were expecting I'd go back on not a Friday night and see how it is though.

I would like to express my appreciation to Ciaran and Shahen for being so patient, hospitable and helping to enrich my Scottish drinking experience with their recommendations to suite my own palate. I am really amazed by Ciaran's knowledge about his liquers (esp whiskies & gin) and Scottish culture/history. One can tell he is truly passionate about his job and i highly recommend tourists/whisky enthusiasts to look for him during off peak hours to have a rewarding drinking experience.

The atmosphere of this place is really nice and relaxed. We ordered different kind of foods: chicken salad, chicken burger and 3 of us a grill menu with also chicken. Unfortunatly the grill chicken was really basic and the portion to small. They do have really nice sauce options on the table so that did help. The frites were really good. But the frites soundnt be better then the meat/chicken. Chicken salad was also very basic and didn't taste that good. You do get the good frites again. The service was OK. Came to get our order, brought it, done. Not very social but did the job. It's a shame. If you look for basic food you will get it but at a price of which you expect more. This while the atmosphere is really good.

This place has great potential: trendy ambience, wood fire grill, steaks, craft beers. Unfortunately it doesn't get it right. The sirloin (requested as medium rare) was overcooked, the chips were undercooked, the beer was bit flat. Maybe we can needs a second chance!

A modern burger/ribs/steakhouse situated in the Cowgate, Edinburgh. The menu is typical of this style of restaurant. The food is good with generous portions. They serve a wide range of beers, with some less common ones available. The decor is somewhat industrial/warehouse, but absolutely fine, although lighting is perhaps a little subdued given the height of the ceiling The downstairs restaurant has a spacious feel. The central tables have bench seating, so if you prefer a chair ask for a table alongside the wall/windows. Upstairs there are more intimate seating areas. I think these are probably popular with the evening crowd, out for a few drinks. Prices are average, so neither cheap nor expensive. A good place for eating, especially if you're looking for food later in the evening. Staff are friendly and chatty. Parking is on-street, if you can find a space (metered during daytime hours). It's easy to walk from the Royal Mile or Grassmarket or hop in taxi from Princes St. Great place to eat.

This is a great place and I can't wait to come back for drinks. I'm probably going to leave it a little while though - the venue was entirely empty when we arrived, but within an hour the staff had directed every other table of people to sit directly next to us at barely distanced tables. Got a little uncomfortable! Food was okay, cocktails are good. Would recommend, but wish that we had been spaced out more when it really wasn't busy.

This is a great place to stop and grab a drink and a bite to eat. Feel like a Whisky? They have 125 of them on the menu. This place is popular and gets very crowded. However they have a ton of seating so getting in should not be a challenge. With how busy it is the restaurant gets a bit loud but you can still carry on a conversation without too much trouble. The staff if very friendly and the service is fast. The burgers, ribs, and steaks we're all very good. If you are in the area bar hopping and listening to all the great music pop in here for a quick bite.

Good beers, not too good whiskey sour. The food was quite disappointing, the steaks are thin and not cooked to order. Ours were just tepid. Had to give it back and the new one was better, but still not something worth 26£. Burgers seemed to be okay, my friends were satisfied. Ambiente is nice though, if you are into more industrial style, so I would still recommend it for a drink or two.

It's a bar that serves and treats its customers well, in a relaxed atmosphere. You are always made to feel welcome. Whilst the selection of drinks may be different to what you're used to, and can be cheap to expensive, depending on your tastes, it's still a good place to go.

Came in late to Edinburgh and it was hard to find a place to get some food. A gentleman in one of the places we tried very kindly gave us directions to this place. We were blown away by the fact you could get this quality of food at this time of night. It was 1am. Very chilled atmosphere, the music not to loud, wine great. Absolutely loved this place.

Not only there is a very wide selection of independent beers, but it is also possible to order delicious, reasonably priced food. The fire place gives a nice touch to the atmosphere. Totally recommended! Note that getting a table at the week end can be tricky, so go early to do so. It is possible to book tables, though. If you want to eat with more privacy and without much noise, there are plenty of seating spaces upstairs.

I often overlooked this place because it's big and on the cowgate so had low expectations but have been twice now. First time because it was raining and had space then we chose to go for a leaving do. Food has been consistently good both on a quiet afternoon and a Friday night. Good range of food for dietary requirements and really good beers on tap. Staff were very accommodating for our leaving do with booking our space and changes we need to make.

Really good bar, just steps from the Grass market. The selection of whiskies and gins is very good. But the selection of 15 keg beers was what brought me through the door. Excellent selection of beers that is well served. I wasn't planning on eating, but the menu looked so interesting. And it was worth trying! Will come here again.

The combination of the different flavours were melting so good together! The rosé was also the best i have had in Scotland so far! For us this was the best restaurant in Edinburgh. We stayed 5 days. BEST STEAK, BEST VIBE, BEST STAFF! Earlier this month, we arrived at Edinburgh late at night, 9 P.M. Many restaurants were closed and to make it worse, there were 15 of us, which made it more difficult to find a restaurant... "OX184" was definitely a life saver! When we walked in, they welcomed us and quickly set the table for us, which was my first impression of this place! I would have given more than 3 stars even if frozen steak had been served because I was satisfied with the service, itself. But you know what? The steak was AMAZING! I could easily say it's the best steak I've ever eaten in my life. It melted in my mouth before I even chewed it! (a bit of exaggrration.. I chewed it anyway.) And, I also enjoyed the local vibe. People seemed relaxed after a hard day's work. Some were drinking with their arms around each other and even a couple of people were dancing! Some people might complain that it was noisy and crowded. But, if you really want to feel "Edinburgh Vibe", this place won't let you down!

It was the only pub near our lodging still serving food at 1am. The staff was friendly. The atmosphere was chic. And the food was AMAZING. I ordered their signature cheeseburger & it is by far one of the tastiest burgers I've eaten.

We arrived on Halloween night and very late night. The staff was exceedingly grumpy and didn't mind sharing it with customers, and the house wine was watery. But the food was pretty darn good. My husband got the juiciest tiniest burger on brioche, and I got began but they were no fail. Oh yes and Emily who was not our server was very kind at every encounter but alas these were few and not significant. She was not one with whom we had to do. Recommended for good meals but bring your thick skin.

I don't remember the situation when I've been so disappointed with the food in any restaurant ever. Couple months back I've eaten the most delicious BBQ ribs in the world at OX. Last night I went to OX again to have some ribs having that picture in my mind but sadly it wasn't the same. It wasn't even nearly similar to the previous time. The ribs were smoked before grilling and there's no info about that in the menu - so they tasted totally different (worse in my opinion) and there were barely any meat on them. After first piece I ate I had to spit out some cartilages and I didn't feel like eating anymore after that. Before you could literally eat everything but the bone. Also the slaw was some mixed salad, not even lettuce with some tasteless sauce on the top. The chips were ok and I ended eating only that. I don't know what happened, if this is because of lack of staff or the fringe but I'm not gonna recommend food at OX to anybody ever again. Everything all right with the service and drinks though.

We came across here while heading to Brew Dog, glad we found it as I personally preferred the place. The beer is good with a great selection of craft beers at OK prices. We popped in for food one lunch, and it wasn't the best American/BBQ we have had but it was good. The burnt end baked beans were probably the best bit. Service was decent, and the atmosphere was good too.

Really like this bar, typical of your Fuller-Thomson franchise pub. Nice trendy decor on the inside, good music and nice staff. The food menu is good and reasonably priced. Do yourself a favour, have the ribs. It's late night opening on the weekend is also a plus, making a chilled change of scene from some of the other messy watering holes you find in Edinburgh. You can also get the cheesy chips until late too. Drunk + Cheesy chips in a cool bar at 2am, what's not to love! I'm giving this a four star because the drinks are a bit pricey. Besides that, would definitely recommend!

Great food, service and value for money! We only popped in for breakfast but there's a huge range of whiskies and decent range of draught beer. They also have an app with some offers on. One of the best bars/restaurants we visited on our trip to Edinburgh.

The waitress told me that there were absolutely no vegan options, which I find hard to believe but if it is true, they could reach a lot more people by adding a few options. I really enjoyed my visit here - I had always incorrectly assumed it wouldn't be great given their location (my issue, not theirs or yours), but had some post-work drinks recently and the service was fabulous, along with the selection, and they work quite hard to make the atmosphere amazing - the smell of the place is like being at a barbecue and there is always a roaring fire. I didn't order a dish but a colleague did and it looked fantastic. Extra points for the bartender obviously knowing his craft.

This place was recommended to me by someone in my hostel who said it was one of the best meals he ever had! Didn't recall what exactly he had but I ordered the Falafel Burger and it was BY FAR the best falafel burger I've ever had! I'm not vegan, but I can say if you're vegan or not, you'll be impressed by this burger. Many times Falafel anything comes out dry if overcooked, but this was not the case! The fries though were just okay, wouldnt order them again. They tasted EXACTLY like McDonalds fries, so if thats your thing you may like them! Wish I had ordered the onion rings instead as they looked delicious. If I ever come back to Edinburgh I'd come back here for sure!

Let me start out by saying that we came during the time that the Fringe festival was on and all of Edinburgh was turned into festival town. They had brought in new staff for the time period and there were a lot of people coming into the restaurant That being said, we were seated in 10 mins and they had menus in front of us immediately and offered us water as soon as we sat down. All in all, really prompt. They were also quick with taking our order for drinks and food. The space is really large, they have an upstairs as well, and it looks upscale. About half an hour after we order, the waitress tells us that the food order was put in but not the drinks, She apologises and comes back about 15 mins later with our pitcher of drinks - which were really good! The food comes later, and its good as well, but that makes me wonder how long it takes for food to be served in the restaurant in general, since it would have been about 1.5 hours since we ordered and the food order was put in. It took a really long time to get the check as well so overall, I would say that the evening started out great but fizzled into pretty bad wait staff service. I hope its just a seasonal problem, since the space itself is really nice, they have a lot of food options and are good with allergy information an they are helpful. I would come back for sure, since the food is good.
