Reviews of Red Squirrel
E. H.
Booking was made for after the panto. Great choice for a party of 7. Choice of food covered the grandchildren, vegetarian and me... Greedy pig. Food was excellent. Cocktails delicious, service was very friendly and atmosphere was buzzing. Not bad for 4:30pm. Pleasantly surprised as did not know what to expect
k. p.
Had the Vegetarian Scottish breakfast at the red squirrel. Really liked the plant based Haggis and plant based sausage!
D. J.
Not many dog friendly places to eat in Edinburgh. This gastro pub was welcoming to my dog and even gave him some water. The food was great too
J. H.
Finding somewhere that accepts dogs in Central Edinburgh is not easy. After a Google search we hit upon this place and we were very pleased we did.
The staff were friendly and welcoming. The dogs were given water and biscuits.
The menu was varied and the food was very tasty. My husband enjoyed a burger and I had a falafel flat bread. It was lovely and freshly made.
I would recommend this place without reservation.
B.
The Place is really nice, all the staff very friendly and welcoming. They are also dog friendly and give us some water and some treats for our dog. The food was outstanding. Highly recommended.
S. H.
The food in this place is delicious, as were the cocktails and the service was great too - food and drinks arrived in good time and the staff were very friendly. My only feedback would be that, as a dog-friendly venue, please don't put a booking with a dog under a speaker playing music. It was on the louder side even for us humans, and the only place we could put our dog was in the corner beside the table, under said speaker. I also noted from other Google reviews that their dogs were given water and treats - my boy missed out there too I'm afraid. So, I would come here again, but I have to say I would be hesitant to bring my pooch back, or recommend it as dog "friendly"
D.
Friendly, attentive, if inexperienced, staff (but hey, everyone has to start new sometime!). Our entire meal, starters and mains, arrived at the same time which was a tad unexpected, but simple mistake and we coped admirably if I say so myself.
Nice wee place with some good beers. Steak ciabatta was excellent with very tender and just slightly pink beef.. delish.
A. G.
Recommended! I really enjoyed my lunchtime visit. Very good steak ciabatta and excellent chips washed down with great beers . What's not to like.
D. B.
Lovely mushroom risotto and good service. Beer selection was solid. Not quite used to places being so super busy again though.
A. P.
Came here today and the food was incredible ! We were served really quickly and the waiter (don't know his name, sorry) was so friendly and attentive we could see he works hard ! Lovely place
H. H.
Loved it here the atmosphere, also we took our dog in they really looked after us.
We were on our honeymoon and was sent drinks over too, food is delicious!
K. P.
Lovely all the way around. Food, Drink, Atmosphere & DOGS are all 5 star.
The burgers here are fantastic, especially their vegetarian options (they have 4 that I know of, 2 of which I can guarantee are amazing). I also feel this says a lot, as I am a carnivore. My go to is probably the chicken mushroom burger with Parmesan Truffle fries 🙌🏼😛
With that being said, they also have delicious sweet potato fries and a large selection of gin and beers on tap.
The ambiance is great for a few drinks or a meal with a few friends, a date, or your best furry friend!! 🐶

Went for a bar meal and really enjoyed it. Staff were very friendly and welcoming. Food was good. Quiet when we were there but still a nice atmosphere. Happy to recommend.
L. G.
Very good service. Good choice of beers which I had not previously tried. The two iPA beers I had were very differentx and most enjoyable. Beer not over priced. Cocktail list looked varied and not overpriced. Its a cosy and lively venue which serves food. It has a good menu and the Birdie burger that I had was very tasty. Booking might be advisable at the weekends as it is centrally located and appears to be a popular venue. Have been to this venue pre pandemic and will definitely be back.
S. A.
Very good cocktails and the food was deliciouse.
M. G.
We popped in for breakfast & everything was delicious! The fruit topped porridge, a serve of maple bacon pancakes & some smoked salmon with poached eggs on a slab of thick crusty sour dough 😋 yum!
10/10 for nice clean toilets too!
L. G.
Good selection of 0% beer and cocktails. Visited on a Thursday night, would imagine good vibes at the weekend
L. D.
Always enjoy the birdie burger and good selection of beers on tap but the real reason I go is for the banoffee cheesecake (it is one of the nicest desserts I've ever had). Staff are always friendly and the food is always served very quickly.
K. S.
Lovely cool larger and a couple of small plates for lunch, great selection of drinks to cover most peoples tastes.
D. J.
Dinner was quite good- our goat cheese salad was superb and our spinach and mushroom pasta was a little short on spinach, but still very tasty. Terrific service, fantastic atmosphere, good beer selection, and a delicious chocolate cake for dessert. I’d be willing to return right away.
R. M.
Been drinking in the Squirrel for ten years. I love it as much now as I did back then. Very relaxed, great choice of pilsners.
C. B.
Great atmosphere, friendly service & good food.
Went to this eatery on Tuesday 5/9/2018. We were served by Nathan, very friendly and polite member of staff. We asked for drinks and menu, I wanted water. Nathan brought me a large carafe of water with some lime and mint in. This was so refreshing that I managed to empty the carafe in a few minutes. Our food was brought to us, it was very nicely presented and was very tasty. I had the chicken burger, real chicken breast meat, with side of french fires and a small bowl of gherkins. I also had a side salad brought which was reasonable is size and had a nice combination of salad items, dressing was very nice too. My husband had fish and chips, it looked very nice and he enjoyed it.
It was very reassuring to see that the waiter cleaned the table even when a person had sat at a table, without having anything before changing her table. We were impressed.
The washrooms were very nice and clean and a pleasure to use. Good sign for any premises.
Fully recommend The Red Squirrel, a lovely place to meet friends and have lovely evening, while nice music being played in the background, loud enough to hold a comfortable conversation. Thank you to all staff.
C. P.
This restaurant has the best Haggis burgers! The restaurant itself is cosy and the staff friendly. We have enjoyed going to this restaurant on each of our trips into Edinburgh and I would recommend a visit if you are ever in Edinburgh.
p. v.
Nice staff, very quick service. Quite and nice atmosphere. Dog 🐕 friendly 😍, great and very tasty food 😋
b.
Warm and friendly. That goes for staff and decor. Food was great and fairly priced for the city centre. Will visit again.
I. R.
We had a lovely time here when we visited Edinburgh, the food was incredible and service was second to none. There were very tasty vegan options for those in our group who were vegan too, which was great as before we found The Red Squirrel on a walk around the city we had a hard time finding somewhere that served nice vegan/veggie food. The staff were very friendly and accommodating, plus the venue being dog friendly was an absolute bonus - our Labrador was welcomed with his own fresh water bowl and a plate of biscuits, as well as loads of snuggles! Would absolutely come again, thank you so much for a fabulous time :)
E. S. (.
Came for breakfast today.
Ordered toast with tomato, chorizo, spinach and pancake with bacon & maple syrup.
The toast was very nice but the pancake wasn’t as nice. Recommend to eat toast rather than pancake for breakfast.
T.
Beautiful breakfast with the family here, in one of the lowest costing places on the street. And absolutely worth every penny. Most of us had the big breakfast they do, which was done to perfection; even the picky child had not a scrap or crumb left on the plate. Would definitely recommend.
T. R.
I loved my beer. There was a nice dog too who made my night very enjoyable. Nice decorations. I felt very cosy and warm here. Big thumbs up from me :)
C. L.
Popped in for brunch with an old friend earlier this week, and had a lovely experience. The place was dog friendly (which is always a big plus for me, and my four legged friend). The space itself was lovely and bright, staff were friendly, and service was prompt. My friend was delighted with his soup, and my salmon sourdough was great too. Between the food and the jug of Bloody Marys we shared, we had a lovely time. And so did my dog, who was given a water bowl, a few biscuits and a scritch on his head on arrival. Would definitely recommend!
N. K.
Dog friendly with welcoming attentive staff, good value and a wide range of beers and ales.
M. T.
Great service, great food, great bloody Mary's, great choice of draft beer. You have to book a slot but there's no rush to leave if you fancy s couple of drinks after dinner.
G.
Nice enough, no atmosphere as was extremely quiet but the staff are friendly. Food is good enough but nothing special.
J. T.
Lovely restaurant, primarily serving burgers (both vegetation and non vegetarian). Really friendly waiter, and excellent food - all very reasonably priced. We will definitely be returning.
E. N.
Good selection of craft beers. Decent burger, staff friendly and helpful.
E. H.
Nice customer service, it seemed as if they were having a few difficulties but it didn't affect our meal and drinks at all so we were grateful to the blonde lady who served us for being honest and getting our food to us quickly despite any issues.
Lovely drinks and food was decent too.
K. H.
Booked here last night at short notice , loved it , our meal was lovely , nice prices and the staff were great , polite friendly and very quick to make sure we had everything we wanted. Will definitely go back next time I'm in Edinburgh
F. k.
Amazing to have a dog friendly place that serves awesome food
H. D.
Food was very good. Buzzy atmosphere. Allows dogs 🐕 in.
N. W. (.
The ambiance is nice.
The gin is fantastic.
Staff were very nice.
The meal was slightly disappointing. Could possibly have been what we ordered.
The venison burger was a bit dry.
The lentil dahl was quite dry and tasteless. Filled with chickpeas. Quite odd.
Still. Good value.
Possibly better luck with different menu items.
H. R.
Really place with good prices for Edinburgh. Selection of shots. Had fried Haggis balls was not bad but she'll was hard. Inside taste nice and meaty
D. 8.
Service was good, but passion fruit sour coctail was awful. Like drinking juice of lime...other way great place to come with your dog 🐶
M. K.
Very good vegetarian burger and fries :-) huge portions, friendly staff and good drinks. Definitely a crowd pleaser, there is something for everyone. It is just about loud and if you sit next to the door, you get always that annoying noise when someone comes in. They need to fix that door! Will come again :-)
P. H.
Wonderful, very friendly, great selection of ales & a wide selection of wonderful food - dog friendly too 😊
B. M.
I booked this fairly last minute as the restaurant I had wanted had the phone ringing engaged all the time. Our party of three probably raised the average age of the patrons by 2O years! However the staff were particularly friendly and helpful and we really enjoyed the food. I will definitely visit Red Squirrel again
I. M.
Great, twins of 18 months a dog and 4 adults. Service was quick and food was good
P. H.
Fabulous staff, atmosphere and selection.
What more could you want?
T. w.
great friendly staff. brilliant food. the person who took us was sad they no longer did the spicy burger... but the normal one was great anyway. x
D. R.
Excellent place for both breakfast and dinner. Recommend the Red Squirrel breakfast as well as the burgers for dinner. Staff here are very polite and helpful. Food might take a while during busy periods, but it’s well worth it
C. G.
Just had a beautiful meal here and our dog was welcomed with gravy bones...superb!
Relaxed atmosphere and really friendly welcome.
Thank you!! 😊
S. S.
This place is the best place ever. Great Whiskey selection. Good toilets and great service. 9/10 - Would drink again. Bit on the expensive side but what do you expect for a nice place in the city centre.
R. W.
Exactly what you want out of an Edinburgh pub experience - great menu, good whisky, plenty if of beer.
J. O.
First visit to Edinburgh in 18 months. the Red Squirrel was the last place I ate at before the pandemic so wanted to come back and 'pick up where I left off'. Loved it!
P. L. S.
Really great bar, fab atmosphere and the food was yummy, especially the bacon fries!!!!
E. H.
Kind of odd restaurant experience. After entering, we were ignored for quite some time until a waitress greeted us and led us to our table. The food order was also not taken when the drinks were brought which prolonged the wait even further. Great selection of food, even though the first thing the waitress did when she'd led us to the table was cross off all the things on the menu we couldn't order. Some vegetarian and vegan friendly options. I had the Orzo Soul Bowl. Was a bit bland but overall okay. Drinks were lovely and the waitress who ended up actually serving our table was very sweet and friendly. Probably won't go again as all of our dishes tasted "fine" but not great, but it's good value and a cosy atmosphere.
S. W.
An intimate pub with a nice and relaxed atmosphere. A great range of cocktails and craft beer, and excellent food. An ideal venue for celebrating birthdays and special occasions
R. F.
Great food and an amazing selection of beers!
S. G.
Great food, gluten free options and did friendly.
a. w.
Great relaxed pub with good food and the dog can come along
P. B.
Great food and they let dogs in too which qas awesome
M. N.
The food was very good, the bread of the hamburgers is sweet so it gives them a nice taste
D. S.
Good atmosphere. Need to book in advance
Y. p.
Welcoming staff and good qual food. For the quality, the food was reasonably priced as well. There were a number of vegetarian options to choose from as well.
J. M.
Ok a wee bit pricey for basic food but dog friendly so will be back.
J. D.
Very cosy and pretty bar with great drink selection and food. Very nice cocktails!
L. N.
Absolutely lovely staff brilliant beer and yummy food! Give it a go!
E. L.
Solid burgers on the menu but definitely let down by the chips on the side. Could have gone better with thicker cut ones.
The haggis burger was really awesome though and is the winner of all three stars.
Value for money: I didn’t feel totally robbed but the price was more than I would have expected based on overall experience. I wouldn’t rush here but I would go back.
J. F.
Beautiful food, lovely pub. Very friendly staff. Highly recommended
A. B.
Nice place, tasty food, friendly staff.
J.
Good choice of drinks and a great pub. Always recommend here on a night out
I. H.
Tasty quality Burger, good service, what more do you want
E. K.
Great choice of beer (no Tennants).
P. D.
Great dog-friendly restaurant, with decent cocktails too!
J. F.
Beautiful food, lovely pub. Very friendly staff. Highly recommended
M. N.
The food was very good, the bread of the hamburgers is sweet so it gives them a nice taste
L. N.
Absolutely lovely staff brilliant beer and yummy food! Give it a go!
K. C.
Good food and selection of drinks and cocktails and really great and lovely staff. Will definitely be back xx
D. R.
Excellent place for both breakfast and dinner. Recommend the Red Squirrel breakfast as well as the burgers for dinner. Staff here are very polite and helpful. Food might take a while during busy periods, but it’s well worth it
B. B.
Very good food, superfriendly staff. Will come again when we're in Edinburgh!
E. H.
Great atmosphere, location and tasty food!
E. H.
Food was lovely. Very busy .so had wait over an hour on food 😒
S. F.
Great pub, friendly staff and serving Tempest 'long white cloud' on draft was the icing on the cake! didn't have food on this visit so can't comment
P. T.
I love this place! Class pub. Excellent selection of beers and the bar staff are welcoming and know their stuff so are interesting chat when it comes to selecting your beer of choice. I have a soft place in my heart as this is where I was taken for my stag. All the lads (big rugby lads) were all well fed and the burgers are AMAZING!
Most of all my wife twin boys and I met my father and step mother here again good and drink 1st rate but the staff were so accommodating for my (then 9 month old) twins.
Great family place
Negatives:
1) Not a great selection of parking
2) it gets busy so book ahead if possible
Keep up the good work guys
J. R.
Was here for breakfast over the weekend.
Excellent breakfasts, especially the 'Full Scottish' (they call it 'Red squirrel breakfast). We were a very big party and, whilst the restaurant was otherwise empty because we were there first thing, they served the whole group accurately and promptly.
It is very easy to ruin a classic breakfast with bad ingredients, but here everything was great: excellent haggis, great black pudding, very good sausages, etc. All excellent and piping hot, and very good value: £10 with a glass of OJ.
Very good coffee too (which is rare).
They only lose a star for slightly overdone scrambled egg, lack of avocado, and wouldn't want to skew the reviews for people who don't go for breakfast.
J. E.
Fab food. Fab service. Fab cocktails. Throughly recommend popping in 🤗
J. W.
Accommodating staff, delightful menu and very tasty food. Best fried calamari we’ve had in a while.
J. A.
One of the best choices for burgers in Edinburgh. Nice ambience, usually not too loud for a pub in this part of town, and you can get very relaxed and quiet burger dinners on weekday evenings. Also a good selection of local and international craft beer with rotating guest ales.
K. C.
Good food and selection of drinks and cocktails and really great and lovely staff. Will definitely be back xx
S. V.
We ordered Birdie burguer and the Squirrel burguer with onions and it was delicious. They didn't have the full menu as show the website because of the COViD. Also the dark beer was stunning. Friendly service.
L.
Excellent range of beers and super dog 🐶 friendly.
P.
Great selection of draught lagers and beers in a very pleasant atmosphere.
P. G.
Great craft beer selection with cool taps against the wall! Very helpful staff, good space inside and dog friendly pub. Highly recommended if you want to taste something outside of the big breweries.
i.
Table service was good, were excellent in adapting a booking so someone else could join. Great selection of gluten free bottled beers.
C. L.
What a fantastic find! My husband and I arrived in Edinburgh late and were famished. After walking around, we stumbled on the Red squirrel and were d delighted that they were still serving dinner at 11pm.
The bartenders were wonderful, engaging and knowledgeable about the beers, and recommended some fantastic draught and bottle brews. This was seriously some of the best service I've experienced in a long time.
There burgers were fantastic, and well portioned for the price. We left happy and sated and will definitely try to come back in the future.
n. p.
Good staff, good beer & good food. Bizarre! Really like the Squirrel, staff are happy to let you taste the beer before you order and given that there's always at least 10 draft beers it helps you get what you actually want. The chicken burger is awesome, good effort all round.
J.
Good choice of drinks and a great pub. Always recommend here on a night out
S. A.
Very good range of beer
P. O.
Excellent beers & good service
P. S.
We came in on a Sunday lunch time and dined like kings. The burgers were exceptional and so were the onion rings - which a lot of places fail to get right. Great food, friendly service and good beer. Happy days
J. W.
Excellent burger and good service
A. D.
Fantastic meal. Great beer and fantastic staff. Great to get a nice cooked breakfast at 2pm can't be beaten
V. B.
Food was good, service impeccable, avoid being near the windows if you can as it can get quite cold !
S. W.
I've been here on 2 separate occasions for lunch, and a couple of beers in the evening. Burger selection is good and they are cooked well, reasonably priced as well. Nice, relaxed atmosphere in the evening to grab a few drinks with friends.
B. W.
Loved this place. Really cracking place to drop in for a drink. Many craft ciders on the board and a good hearty burger served after coming out of a gig at Usher Hall really hit the spot. High on my list of favourites in Edinburgh!
F. B. C.
A really nice and convivial space that really should be busier but just happens to be at a strange crossroad in the city centre.
A really good selection of beers and the staff knew what they each were without using the same adjectives found on the bottle.
F.
The food is amazing. When you go, you MUST order a burger with all the trimmings! The beer list is massive, you don't know where to start! The place itself is gorgeous, kind of hipster chic. Oh and if all that isn't enough to make you go, DOGS ARE ALLOWED in! So this is one of my favourite places to eat dinner with my poodle!
S.
The Chilli Death burger conjured up images of a burger dripping in chillies and a hot sauce, but actually it was a burger topped with few jalapenos and a couple of chillies - not that hot at all. That said the burger was quite nice. The fries though - think McDonald's but limp, pretty poor really. So for nearly £11 it just wasn't worth it.
There's a good selection of beer, the service was excellent and staff were very friendly.
M. M.
Great if you can get a seat. Service is always fast, the selection of burgers is highly tempting. There's a great array of beers and even their healthy options, like salads are delicious.
M.
On my last visit to Edinburgh I discovered the Red Squirrel but had only managed a pint there. The beer selection is amazing, local, craft and all sorts on tap!
But they aren't only just a fabulous bar, but are an amazing place for food, especially their hand made burgers. The burger I had was succulent and the mushrooms were a bit different, but a tasty addition to the burger (I’m used to having onions) and the sweet potato fries were amazing, especially dipped in the garlic mayo that came with the burger.
A. A.
Warm welcome. Great beers and tasty food. A real buzz and mobbed on a Monday night which means it is popular. Only minor grumble is the fries were thin and too crisp. Good value food but beers were a bit pricey
A. C.
Good pub, very central. Good food, friendly staff, excellent service 😊
J. C.
I really like it in here . Great atmosphere very good value for money . The bar team are extremely friendly and knowledgeable. Although I didn't eat this time I know the food is Excellent. Would defo reccommend for a night out or after work drinks
P. D.
Great dog-friendly restaurant, with decent cocktails too!
M. M.
Yes! Just Yes! BBQ burger with maple syrup was a great idea! The place is informal, and toilets perfectly clean. Fast service, waiting stuff super kind. I'll be back again Squirrels.
D. M.
I first ventured into the Red Squirrel on a wet, miserable evening and immediately felt cheered and warmed by the quirky decor and friendly staff. The food is hearty and filling, and the staff were more than happy to fix a problem with my order which had been entirely my fault. A great selection of drinks, and the ability to try beer by the third was excellent for a beer novice like me!
W. R.
There's a lot of pubs in Edinburgh to choose from but the Red Squirrel offers a fantastic choice of beers in a good bar environment.
The menus pub grub but the haggis comes gastro style as deep fried haggis balls and the burgers ain't bad either!
When your tourist pub doesn't do it for you this is one this locals head to to avoid the masses so worth checking it out for sure.
J. W.
Disappointed. Loved this place and was always our go-to place to eat. Went for my birthday and was left sitting without drinks/anyone coming to our table for 40 mins. It wasn't busy and several staff walked passed - even looking at us - to see to customers on other tables... some that had only just arrived. We had our two young kids with us who were really hungry. Such a shame.
F. G.
Solid as a pub for some simple food.
Quite a nice selection of craft / seasonal beers. food is ok but not "legendary" (how far a burger can go?).
Not much of a good, ye olde pub atmosphere and it is a bit plain.
j. h.
Nice atmosphere ,friendly staff and overall good atmosphere 👌
D. “. B.
Pleasant bar, lots of choices of burgers. Good service by attentive staff. Jalapeno burger was delicious and Lentil Dahl was lovely too. Food reasonably priced.
C. R.
Great! Amazing food and super friendly with the dog, would return if nearby
C. A.
The burgers here are to die for! Amazing quality and decent portions. Great atmosphere for a bite to eat or a catch up with friends. Great selection of craft beers too.
J. G.
I was in Edinburgh for a wedding and this place saved me the morning after! In addition to the great decor and vibe of the place, The 'Red Squirrel breakfast' was brilliant and excellent value for money, the coffee was spot on and the bloody Mary.. was a little too spicy but what can you do. They even gave me Gluten free bread, and a take-away box as I couldn't finish the whole breakfast. And to top it all off you get a drumstick lolly sweet with the bill. Couldn't have asked for more for a Saturday Morning.
A. B.
Nice place, tasty food, friendly staff.
S. T. S.
lovely place, service. delicious breakfast menu
M. G.
Good food and an amazing selection of beer.
K. A.
Top notch pub with a great selection of independent beer on tap. The food seems amazing (we just came for the beer). Nice atmosphere and friendly staff.
T. S.
Good burgers and beers but overpriced. Can get the same quality or better at other places in Edinburgh. Money spent not necessarily spent on quality but rather image.
S. F.
Great staff, beer and burgers
P. H.
Particularly appreciated barman who offered samples of three excellent beers on tap when I couldn't make up my mind. Decent food Sunday 10pm when most pubs had stopped serving.
L. D.
Good food, extensive range of beer, not the common brands, but carefully selected from around the world. We really enjoyed it.
S. R. (.
Great selection of real ales and craft beers with some top notch food to boot. This is a popular bar due to its location so it can get a bit busy and crowded, especially on a Friday evening with the after-work crowd from the local offices. For me it's the start of the Golden Beer Mile which takes in The Hanging Bar, Cloisters and The Argyle, but can also include The Blue Blazer and Bennetts Bar.
D. C.
The first time I visited Red Squirrel I didn't really expect much, a pub on Lothian Road was never normally something that you would look forward too. I was, happily, wrong on this occasion. This pub has a great atmosphere and even better food. It is decorated in a kind of rustic motif that sits well with the absolutely massive selection of spirits and proper Beers and Ales.
If you are looking for a nice pub to meet a few friends, have a bite and sink a couple then make this your first, in not only, port of call.
A.
Great atmosphere, quick service even though it was quite busy and a great selection of beers. We were there on a Friday evening and it didn't get ridiculously busy, although we did leave at 9pm ish so maybe it gets crammed later on. Still, it's worth checking out!
R. J.
Lovely bar/restaurant with lots of great drinks options. Nice range of food with clearly marked vegan options. Very dog friendly!
S. M.
At last! A nice bar to go to on Lothian Road! Owned by the same poeple as Holyrood 9A this has a similar menu and is a great place to go to for a burger, comfort food, a carafe of red wine in a good, friendly atmosphere and pleasant, quirky design (look closely at the squirrel-related prints which will put a smile on your face).
Great service whenever I've been and reasonably priced food and drink.
J. W.
Great food, interesting beers, humourous staff. Okay prices for Edinburgh.
P. D.
As a keen environmentalist, i made the journey through form leith to see the red squirrel. I'm sure you're well aware that, the introduction of the American grey has had a devastating effect on our native red and i was super keen to see one in flesh. To say i was devastated to find out that this was a burger and beer bar is an understatement. I did stay for a burger and a few too many beers though. Decent.
J. B.
I've mainly been here for food during the day or an evening midweek, and luckily it's never been massively busy. I like the decor, and the food menu is quite extensive, with a huge selection of burgers. They also do good breakfasts.
A. G.
Red Squirrel is a nice pub. It has a wide range of drinks on offer. They also do tasty cocktails if that's more your thing! The pub grub they serve is also very yummy!
M. T.
Great burger bar. Large range of drinks to choose from and tasty selection of burgers to munch down on to ensure you can try lots of different varieties from the bar. My favourite has to be The Halloumi burger with red peppers, red onion and smoked chilli mayo and i'm not even vegetarian. Just don't forget if sweet potato fries are your thing you can get them changes to accompany your burger. Heads up on a Friday after work it's seems to be the busiest time.
S. C.
Big fan of the Red Squirrel - it can get busy so book a table if you really want to dine at a certain time. There is always a new beer to try and a different burger to sample from the extensive list on offer. One issue is the difficulty in accessing in a wheelchair - there used to be a power operated door but that broke ages ago and was never fixed, so now you will have to get the chair up 1 shortish step to enter.
D. B.
The chips are amazing! Some of the best I've had! However our burgers were a bit on the burnt side...
Great service though and a delicious milkshake.
j. y.
burgers just ok.
burgers are not gourmet. the patties are mushy and not crumbly. although, they're not the worst and did the job. depends what you expect for £10.95. service and beers good.
P. A. H.
Great little pub/restaurant on Lothian Road, just steps away from both Princes Street and Usher Hall. Lovely food, warm atmosphere, terrific staff. Dog-friendly. Kitchen open all day.
D. N.
Nice food. Good beer selection, and the staff were very helpful
j.
Friendly Irish curly haired waitress was excellent. Some of the best service in Edinburgh and the beer (Jaipur) was incredible.
R. D.
The Red Squirrel is in the same group of pubs as Holyrood 9A and The Southern Bar and follows a similar formula of a good choice of beers which rotates regularly alongside some pretty good bar snacks. I had the pork and chorizo burger which was really tasty although the accompanying chips were a little bland - there is sweet potato chips on offer so that may be an option for the future.
It's a really good place for meeting up with a group of friends and having decent beers.
S. B.
A good choice for meeting up with friends or going out for a bit of pub-type comfort food. The bar has a nice relaxed vibe and always seems to attract a range of customers, whether it's people recovering from a day shopping on Prince's Street or stopping for a drink after work. I've tried their Piri Piri chicken burger which was delicious and they always seem to have a good range of beers on tap. Their sharing planks looks yummy too and are on my "next to try" list.
A. D.
Randomly came across this place.. breakfast was beautiful.. pancakes were beautiful.. coffee was amazing! The service and the welcome were warm and embracing.. this is a MUST if your going to Edinburgh..
G. L.
Good burgers and sharing plates. Good selection of beers too. Staff are friendly and attentive.
A. M.
Red squirrel has a great selection of beers on tap and a great offer on carafes of wine. The burgers are pretty decent too. This is a good reliable bar.
J. R.
A most excellent cooked breakfast - everything freshly prepared and tasty - and a cracking cup of coffee. Very pleasant and attentive service. Inexplicably not mobbed out at Festival time!
p. m.
Loved it. Great food and great beer.
The staff is nice and attentive, The haggis burger is yummy ;)
J. M.
The red squirrel is a very cosy and comfortable pub in the middle of town. Usually has seating available with great beer selection, food and friendly staff
H. M.
In the same 'chain' as Holyrood 9A and a few others, it offers up a substantial burger menu with simple classics (burger/cheese) and delectable variations (the pork and chorizo, the chicken breast, the halloumi) all with clever names. Great place to stop for a post work drink and continue on to dinner. It's all about the beers here.
S. F. B.
Good food, good price. Drink selection is alright but it's basically standing room only: if you're only looking for a drink, I'd say go elsewhere.
E. M.
The food here was lovely, such a nice place inside. Food was reasonably priced and all staff where lovely and very helpful. Next time I am back will defo come here again
C. D.
Had a great time at this pub. Staff was good overall, but special cheers to Eva who made the the atmosphere very friendly & provided excellent service. 5/5
R. G.
Loved this place!!!! Amazing!!! Staff super nice and food was on point!!! Even tried the haggis😳..... If I return to Scotland this will be on my list for sure!!!
H. V.
The hamburger wasn't all it was raved about. Good but the reviews were too glorious. The beer selection is great. The atmosphere is decent.
G. O.
It's been a long time since I was in here but it will not be as long till I am back. The staff are a joy to be beheld they couldnot have been more helpful if they tried, the food was very good and the drink was as good as you could have hoped for service was above and beyond
It will not be as long before we are back well done to all the staff for a most enjoyable meal and will be back soon
Thank you
R. H.
It's a pub that does great burgers and beer (and has survived the arrival of Wetherspoons nearby) - with a great veggie selection too. Staff good too. What else do you need?
a. w.
Dog friendly but noisy. Decent food.
a. h.
Absolutely OK food (even the family herbivore was happy) and an admirable dedication to good beer. And the service was fast & friendly!
R. R.
Nice vibe and lovely service. Staff is really welcoming and friendly.
D. Q.
Great pub
N. B.
Good nice eating place but not brilliant. Hense, 4 star. Overall nice atmosphere.
C. V. B.
Like it's sister pubs, it offers a good selection of beer and a decent burger, without feeling too much like a chain. Not a bad place to stop in for a drink.
B. S.
Lovely food and very friendly and pleasant staff
E. T.
Friendly, warm and authentic with a great selection of all drinks, particularly beers/ales. Helpful staff who tell you about the beers on tap to help you choose the best one (or more) for you.
C. B.
Tasty food and a good choice of beers.
A. H.
A great pub on Lothian Road. Great selection of beers, good wines and consistently great food. A "go-to" place for both work/friends evening out and family outings.
R. O.
Decent beer selection. And burgers are quite tasty. Surprisingly quiet for a Saturday evening.
J. J.
Had the haggis burger, it was really good
B. T.
Good food and great ales from a really friendly staff!
Very helpful with the dog!
Definitely would go again
L. D.
Burger was tasty, staff extremely polite & efficient and premises really clean. Had a great lunch and would definitely visit again
L. L.
Great atmosphere even during covid...only improvement could be on the house wine but overall great after work dinner and drinks!
D. H.
With a good selection of beer and decent gastro pub food, it's a quirky place with a nice atmosphere. I'd go back again.
K. “. H.
Nice modern bar very good selection of beers and spirits, I liked it but also felt it lacked some atmosphere.
M. M.
Like the staff, central location. Burgers, nachos and the best sweet potato fries in town.
Breakfast is filling but stops at noon. Would be great if they can extend this to 1pm every day...
j. m.
Love the atmosphere in this place, staff are really friendly and they have a good selection of beers on tap.
S. Y.
The food here is similar amazing, their burgers are extremely taste whilst their sides are addictive!
Several large tables so can accommodate for large groups.
G.
Great selection of drinks with super friendly staff. Food was also very tasty. Will definitely visit again.
E. K.
Great choice of beer (no Tennants).
D. W.
Good atmosphere and tasty food. Pretty great selection of drinks too.
Z. P.
Up until recently, Lothian Road was not the most desirable drinking location (to put it politely). All that started to change when the Red Squirrel showed up. Brought to us by the peoplebehind The Holyrood and Drouthy’s, it's a rather natty, roomy establishment with a vastarray of beers and ciders on the exceedingly shiny taps, as well as craft beers and classiccocktails. But my favourite thing about this place (other than the besuited squirrel logo) is thesharing planks. Reasonably priced, these generous platters of Scottish cheese, local chutney, artisan bread, cured ham and smoked chicken are the perfect accompaniment to some lovelyvino. (It’s a great idea for those of us who forget to do dinner while out for a drink!)
S. R.
Great bar! Good food! Also you may carry your kids to dinner here as long as you're done by 10 pm
N. B.
It's hard to find fault with Red Squirrel's presentation - the beer selection is great, the burgers are fantastic, the staff are friendly enough - but as part of a mini-chain of similar places around town (see also: Holyrood 9A, The Southern), it lacks an individual character that, say, the Swedish places (Boda, Victoria, Sofi's, Hemma, Joseph Pearce) manage to create. Still, it's a damn sight better than Wetherspoons and the like.
E. L.
Fantastic find for food on a night of random searching for dinner, more excellent staff, drinks, and place. Music was just right, not being overly loud but being loud enough to hear over other people.
S. W.
Generally very good food and service, they often change up the menu, and have done away with many on my favorites.
H. N.
Very dog friendly. Lovely vibes, great place to warm up in this freezing weather. Water + treats for pooches too.
J. M.
Wonderful and delicious burgers, kindly staff. The place is very pleasant and the atmosphere is great!
S. H.

D. C.
Decent beer and food selection, and friendly staff. Don't go on a Friday evening though - absolutely crammed!
O. J. F.
Ace selection of craft beers on tap plus bottles. Welcoming staff who know their brews. Price is the only downside.
