Reviews of Salt Horse Beer Shop & Bar
K. K.
I haven’t expected pub burger can be delicious. B.B.B is seriously super great! Wings (BBQ sauce) are great as well.
We tried 4 different beers, they were great too! Just I don’t recommend chips with sauce menu. Just go for normal chips.
F. D.
Nice feeling, very chic, hip, urban. Great selection of beers. Lovely people, reasonable prices. Good one!
C. W.
Ace again, brilliant selection of beers on tap and in the shop next door. Burgers great, really tasty and the tray deal is excellent. Slightly aloof service, which as a staunch introvert I encourage. All good.
D. M.
Great craft beer and burgers. We had a fantastic time here- lovely customer service and spot for a drink or two tucked away from
the busy Royal Mile. Thank you! 😀
h. d.
Absolutely amazing 10/10 definitely will be back great customer service and the knowledge on the beers was superb
M. R.
The staff is friendly, and there is a good selection of ciders. It's not too loud, so you can have a conversation. I liked that our server was familiar with the beverages and could provide some background information about them.

This review is based on Salt Horse's New Year's celebration so isn't indicative of a general experience.
But it is a fierce test of staff, the kitchen and their skill.
And I'm impressed.
The Hogmanay deal gave us one food token and six drinks for £59. Everyone in the bar had that deal, it was busy and so you can imagine how rushed the staff would have to be to keep up.
Rushed? Perhaps, but as a customer I was unaware of any wait. Staff checked the table often, were friendly, gave drink advice, banter and then came back with the drinks just as swiftly.
I went for the burger and cheese. It vanished down my throat in a few mouthfuls. I could have (but perhaps should not have) had two.
Based on this stern test - one carried out during a socially distant COVID Hogmanay - the Salt Horse staff are bloomin' amazing.
I also want to talk about the drinks. Until my visit to Salt Horse I was scornful of schooners and would have been outraged at the idea of a "third". I had both, and enjoyed it, the experience all the better for them.
This Hogmanay was far from normal but thanks to the Salt Horse and their curation of drinks, it was a good one.
I'll definitely be back.
There's a shaded beer garden down the stairs and out the back. Great if you're in the centre of town, don't mind the stairs and must have a beer garden. The alternatives nearby aren't great, not even good.
However, if you want a beer garden, don't pick a venue in the centre of town. Head to Leith, Portobello or anywhere on the edge.
Tip: There are toilets here, as clean as tiles allow but they're down stairs. If you have mobility problems, they're not ideal. If you have a drunk friend, watch out for them.
Second Tip: They sell cola but not Chinese Winter Olympics sponsoring Coke-a-cola. This is good.

Nice place with nice staff. I found them with the help of Google and it was a nice surprise for my friends who are living in Edinburg were surprised how they didn't know it before. It was strange for me to book a table in a pub but if you come here you should think in advance and book a table.
F. R.
Really nice little place
Off the beaten pass, down a street which looks a little dodgey, but really nice service. The food is awesome
M. K.
Great place with a good selection of beers. We had a good time. I asked for a recommendation, staff was friendly and helpful, however recommended a beer that he hadn't tasted himself and ended up being a bad choice. Fries were okay, not really great - but we were there for the beer.
L. R. M.
Only had a couple of drinks. Good selection of craft beers, they have local brews. Didn't have food so can't comment on that.
M. S.
Salt Horse has a very well stocked beer shop with a good selection of local and international beers. It's also an excellent place to drink in, there's a great selection of craft beers on draught, the service was also friendly and efficient. Bottles/cans bought in the shop can also be consumed on the premises for a small corkage fee. Overall an excellent venue, well worth a visit if you're a craft beer enthusiast.
D. T.
One of the best beer shops / craft beer bars I’ve been to anywhere in the world. 12 great beer choices on tap, over 300 craft bottles available, friendly/knowledgeable staff, and the attached restaurant serves great burgers & fries as well.
W. “. W.
One stop shop for the best craft beers in town, sit in or takeaway. The bar has two sides, both you can sit in one side has more draft selection than the other, while one side Is the bottle shop. There is plenty to eat on offer. The lines are changed daily so expect something new all the time. Staff are super friendly and knowledgeable. Plenty of seating including a back yard of benches. One of my favourites in Edinburgh.
S. G.
Very good burger / food and interesting array of high quality beers, IPA’s Pilsners, and weird and wonderful types. Staff friendly and helpful!
M.
Great food and magnificent beer list. Food from the great meat list. Truffle fries. Crispy chicken fries. Other fries. Hamburgers, double, triple, different choice taste menus. But most importantly!! A huge beerlist. The first place to find a barley wine. All the triple beers you like. About 11 pages of beers available to choose from. Can't fail...!
C. A.
This place is super cozy and has a great feel. Servers weren't the most welcoming and we were unsure if we should order at the bar or from our table. The servers would walk over to other tables to ask if they needed anything but not us.
The food is fantastic! 6£ for a small burger is asking a lot but after we tried the cheese burger, bacon cheese burger, and butter milk chicken burger we thought otherwise. They were fantastic! Even their slaw and fries were amazing!
They have a great selection of beers on tap, I wish I got to ask how often they rotate but, with 12 or 14 beers you've got a good selection.
I wouldn't recommend coming with more than six people, but I would definitely recommend stopping here.
E. s.
Was really looking forward to coming here as one of the best places for craft beer in Edinburgh but it felt a touch soulless and just a bit like a restaurant which is a shame as it didn't feel as relaxed as it could.
J. D.
Very cool bar with lots of draught choices as well as a wealth of bottles and cans. Friendly service; going as far as to offer our friend their own personal tea as a non-alcoholic choice and recommending non-affiliated pubs for folk keen to watch Rugby.
Food looks great too; it's now my favourite place to drink in Edinburgh.
M. B.
Great burgers and beers! One had a cartilage lump but we got over it.
O. S.
Cool, chilled place to have a beer. Staff were nice too, one of the guys there recommended a good coffee spot as I was visiting Edinburgh.
R. C.
I liked it. The beer was good. I went for number 12. Burger is OK, not brilliant, but that's reflected in the cost. I then used their shop and bought some beers to take home. There's a huge selection and if you like craft beer it's well worth a visit. You can also buy from the shop to drink in the bar, but that's slightly more expensive.
K. G.
This is one of my favourite places to go for a cozy drink without the business and dirtiness of a pub. It's definitely a local favourite and has an excellent selection of craft beers that are constantly rotating. They also have excellent burgers and chips and a knowledgeable and friendly staff. The place is quite small, so if you want to come with a bigger group of people, call ahead of time and ask if you reserve a table. They are a dog-friendly bar, so your furry friends are welcome :)
T. B.
Lovely little pub, lives up to the reviews. Great selection of craft ales and local gins.
D. B.
Certainly an interesting place. Bar itself is tiny and even a few barflies will stop you from getting anywhere near ordering. Otherwise seemed to have a good collection of beers on tap although we certainly didn't get the chance to try many. Alright.
C. D.
Cool bottle shop and bar. The shop was shut when we got there at 11pm as the conditions of their off license. Meant I couldn’t nose at the packaging but understandable, all the beers are still available. Bar tender was chatty and helpful and we had a nice little beer stop!
R. L. P. J.
This place rocks! Went here twice. It is a nice little bottle shop with a ton of craft beers available. The staff knows a lot about the local beer scene and about the beers they have available. Great selection. Cheers!
J. H.
What a great bar, with a good selection of beer and appears they have regular tap takeovers. The food is also good but also looks like they have kitchen takeovers. If you like beer definitely a place to drop by when your in Edinburgh.
P. H.
Excellent craft bar & bottle shop. Despite being on a side road off the Royal Mile, it's avoided by the average tourist and Stag/Hen parties. A place for the true craft beer drinker. Good (if small) beer garden as well
C.
Brilliant staple beer shop. The staff are all incredibly knowledgable and love giving recommendations based on what you’re after.
J. C.
An amazing collection of bottled and canned beer, but unfortunatelydid I not gst to tasting them as the kegs were already amazing enough.
And next to that were the burgers absolutely lovely, as well the Vegiatarien as the tripplie beef. A place to recommendfor anyone who loves beer (and burges)
J. A.
Fantastic little beer place always with something very interesting on tap and excellent local bites to eat as well. Don't miss the beer shop next door with hundreds of beers to choose from (you can also order them from the bar).
G. T.
Nice small bar with lots of character, good craft beer. The only shame was they didn’t have many craft bottles when I visited.
T. N.
Central location, excellent constantly rotating list of 10 taps (for beer geeks as well), excellent bottle shop and you can also buy those to drink at the bar. Recently they have been also serving excellent Jones & Son burgers. Dim and cosy bar at central location, often space as well as people still dont find this place for some reason.
M. K.
Great place. Split in two, bar/restaurant in one building, burgers lood good but was only drinking. Next door there is an off license and you can sit in or take out.
A. A.
Great beer, super food, and top tunes...... My kind of heaven.
M. H.
Haggis chips were superb. Nice choice of beer.
C. a. C.
Ok beer lovers, here’s the scoop: Going to this place is like going to a mini-GABF in terms of selection and service experience, but in a small cosy bar/store in Scotland.
That is all you need to know.
J. F.
One of the best pubs for craft beer in Edinburgh.
E. s.
Easily the best bar in Edinburgh, cosy vibe, amazing beer and food and staff who really know what they're talking about. Couldn't recommend it more, we've popped in every day we've been here.
J. W.
Great wee bar and bottle shop. Good eclectic beer choices. A wee bit expensive but par for that course. Looses a star for the wee beer garden being blasted by the jet engine powered extraction fan from the kitchen. If burger king had a wind tunnel.
E. G.
Great wee place 👍 The Nashville Vegan Burger was mega tasty!
R. L.
Perfectly formed beer selection, good service & a nice atmosphere 👌🏾
T. B.
Myself and my partner stumbled across this place after a recommendation from a local. What a find. An amazing selection of beers at reasonable prices, with super friendly staff and a nice drinking atmosphere
P. B.
Lovely little tap room with a good selection on tap and a extensive bottle and can list, food looked nice aswell.
A. N.
Nice place for all beer tastes 🍻
G. C.
Excellent range of interesting craft draught beers plus a beer shop next door. Food looked good but didn't try.
K. B.
Excellent beer selection and a small selection of good quality meals. Very pleasant atmosphere and friendly staff.
t.
Great wee bar, excellent selection, nice staff and lovely vibe. If you like beer, menu changes constantly and you should pick up some really good ones.
L. A.
Quirky tap bar with small garden space. Fantastic selection of well kept beers.
C. H.
Fantastic place! Recommended by a friend and found the staff and venue to be on point. Henry made us feel very welcome, recommended some great beers and was happy to chat about all things beer!!
They had a good range on tap and the bottle store is very well stocked. We were able to choose from the shop and drink in the pub. Would recommend this place to anyone who loves a good pint.
K.
What a delicious burger ! And excellent value for the meat stack, double cheeseburger, fries and 4 wings 11/10
J. H.
The beer choices are high quality, and for that reason alone I've been in several times despite the uniformly poor staff. They sure do not know how to welcome and take care of customers. Frosty and insufficient come to mind as fair descriptors. Average price seems to hover around £6. Expensive, especially given their 2/3 pint size. The aesthetic is a minimalist splintery wood, candles in wine bottles kind of thing. Pretty cozy and simple.
B. D.
Nice beer bar with 12 taps. Cozy seating upstairs. Good beer selection from around the UK.
A. B.
Great beers and knowledgeable and friendly staff
A. C.
Great service! Lovely beers
A. T.
Excellent choice of beers on tap, fantastic food, a quirky garden, and friendly staff. A great choice for a mid meander pit stop.
S. D. M.
I've been in Salt Horse many times, the prices are great and the food is amazing.
They have a meal deal for £12.50 and you get a double burgers with fries and a small portion of their amazing chicken wings!
You can upgrade with different stuff if you want.
The atmosphere is great, the place is small and have a nice industrial feeling. They don't have a proper "table service" but the guys are happy to help if you need anything.
They have an amazing beer selection choice and they are happy to let you taste samples before you order what you like.
Definitely recommend this place!
B. Y.
Great beers on the bar. Very good choice and pricing of the takeaway stuff
M. L.
Top 5 best burger I have had in my life. I had the burger with Haggis on it and it was amazing. I went here on my last night in town. If I would have gone here earlier I would have been here everyday. The staff is super friendly and they have a great selection of beers.
F. S.
My favourite craft beer bar in Edinburgh. Only 12 taps, but they always have a well curated selection of beers. The bottle shop is comprehensive, the staff friendly and knowledgeable, and the burgers are excellent.
M. J.
Sat at the bar for a few hours while visiting Edinburgh. Amazing staff who made great recommendations for beer as well as stuff to do. Loved the beer selection, which includes bottles from next door. Ordered a burger and wings, which we're very yummy. Definitely would recommend this place!!
S. C.
Fantastic place. Do not be tempted to walk past judging it from the outside. The beer is quite frankly inspirational. The lads behind the bar are crack up. My only regret is that I didn't cross the threshold as soon as I hit Edinburgh. Had a great time chatting to other customers.
S. M.
Great, friendly service from Mo at the till. He gave my husband and I advice on which beers would suit us when we told him what kind of flavours we enjoyed. Very good selection of beers at all different price points. There is the option of taking the beer away or sitting in with it for £2 more, which to me seems fair ☺ Will be back soon!
C. L.
I only visited the shop rather than the bar but stopped for some food too. There's a fantastic beer selection here and some beers which I've been trying to find locally for a while. The food was pretty good and it was fairly quiet which was a nice alternative to the busy bar if you're looking for a quick quiet bite. However, the layout and marketing of the beers leaves a lot of room for improvement. The staff did their best to help us and really tried to go out of their way to help but I think a bit more training would go a long way; I don't expect them to be familiar with every single beer as their selection is so huge but I would expect them to at least be familiar with styles, glassware and breweries (to an extent). Certainly worth a visit but I would put a wee bit of time aside to give yourself enough time to look through their plethora of options.
C. B.
Amazing selection of awesome beers. Food is brilliant too. Had loaded fries, and chicken wings. Top notch. Staff really friendly and knowledgeable too. Will definitely come again next time I'm in Edinburgh.
S.
Genuinely exceptional. Had heard good things about this place already, but it truly exceeded all expectations. We had a west coast classic each, and a portion of buffalo wings. Washed down with a delicious wheat beer from their mammoth selection of beer. The burgers are smashed/grill steamed from what I could tell... Succulent and so flavoursome with a fantastic burger sauce, fresh cos/iceberg lettuce and a perfect bun, slightly sweet but not a pudding bun like soany places. The wings were the best I have tried in Edinburgh, legit American buffalo wings with super high quality chicken. The vibe is chilled casual, the staff were super friendly and helpful and the place itself is small but charming. I honestly can't remember having a better American style meal anywhere, not even in America itself. If I could give it ten stars, I would try and give it 11. Absolute must try in the city centre!! <3
A. F.
Superb, dizzying selection of beers to take away, plus cosy bar next door with beers on tap. A beer lover's heaven!
C. R.
This is my go to place for beer and burgers. Menu was recently changed and food has become a little less than what I’d expect. Great rotation of beers on tap with another couple hundred in the beer shop which you can drink in the bar or take home!
D. W.
Best bar/bottle shop in town for interesting beers!
K. M. (.
Really liked this place. It's quite small so it's your luck whether you get a seat or not! They have around 10 tables, plus an outdoor garden area which I didn't inspect in December. It's small and cosy with a lovely atmosphere. If you're a beer fan then this is definitely the place for you. Myself and my other half went here and it took him about 10 minutes to pick a beer. They hve pages and pages filled with beers from all over. I had cava, it was lovely; if you're like me and a non beer drinker. My bf prefer german beers so he had a couple of those. Prices are reasonable in my opinion for what they provide and definitely not over priced. We also ordered food. Again, if you love burgers, this is the place for you. Staff are friendly and helpful. Food was great. Didn't feel ripped off at all, like I do most places in Edinburgh so will be adding this one to our list for our next visit. Should also add, they have a shop next door to the bar, filled with their extensive range. We didn't go in but again, if you're a fan of craft beers and ales etc. Definitely pay this place a visit! And if you're not, like me, you'll still enjoy it!
L. S.
Cracking range of beers. The chicken wings are the best I've tasted outside of USA. Maybe thee best!! Outstanding burgers too! Go, you won't be disappointed. (They should make sure both menus are always on tables)
G. B.
Excellent craft beer bar and shop in central Edinburgh with an ever changing selection of the the finest UK, European and international craft beers. Also has Scottish gins and Whiskeys. Food is good quality American style burgers and fries by Meat stack. Has a small beer garden out back that get little sun but is well sheltered. Massive selection of cans in their shop next door you drink in or take away. Don’t expect a cheap pint this is artisan beer served in 2/3 pints. Staff are friendly and knowledgeable. Must visit in for anyone into craft beers!
K. H.
Excellent staff all really friendly. We're regulars love the wee teeny weeny beers. I used to be a regular black bo's customer since my late teens and i'm now in my 50's🤩🤩l love what salt horse has done. Its one of hazel and my favourite places to go.
S. M.
A really fine craft beer bar also serving food. Huge selection of beers in two rooms with friendly staff and a relaxed atmosphere.
The best thing about this place is that it is between the Cowgate and the Royal Mile without being overwhelmed and crowded out with people.
There is a vast selection in the bottle shop so you can take out, too.
Probably my favourite bar in Edinburgh.
L. (.
Incredible selection of beers and delicious food. Knowledgeable and friendly staff who were happy to make a recommendation for a beer to go with my dinner. Can't wait to go back.
K. M.
Loved it. The selection of beer was great, including some funky choices and a couple sour ales which is rare but perfect for me ;) I was didnt try the food because we are just before stumbling upon this place but it did look amazing. Hopefully I can come back soon.
A. G.
My previous review - Relaxed place to enjoy craft beer. A good choice.
I was a bit disappointed with my last visit. There seemed to be less info on the board re the beers on offer. The guy tried to charge me for pints instead of 2/3s - I wonder how just many festival goers fell for that one.
I'm just a bit gutted because I have been raving about the place for a while - maybe I built it up to more than it was.
C. C.
Good selection of beers. Meat:Stack burgers are amazing and really good value. £12 for a gourmet burger, fries and some buffalo wings. Can't complain! Really tasty alcohol free beers too which is nice!
T. M.
Looking for a great selection of beer? Be sure to stop by the Salt Horse and get away from the hustle and bustle of the Royal Mile. Make your way out back and chill out with friends in the beer garden.
N. K.
Solid craft beer place. The bottle shop has a great selection (look out for the bottles going out of date for cheap) and the main bar is nicely styled with a cozy beer garden outside. Might seem quite expensive but its craft beer and other pubs in a similarly central location probably charge not much less for pish beers.
H. F.
I love this bar. They do great beer, always a fab selection with stouts, ipa, sours and craft Lager. The beers and fries are great too. Excellent bottle shop with an amazing selection.
J. L.
The lads know their beers so don't be afraid to ask for recommendations. You've got excellent taps and an insanely good selection of bottles. Prices were cheap (for me as a Finn at least). The place itself is rough and cozy
A. W.
One of the best beer selections in the city with 10 or so regularly rotating taps and a substantial bottle selection. Really friendly staff and a cosy atmosphere. Foods good too from meat stack burgers who I think started in newcastle.
If the bars full sit in the bottle shop and you can select anything from the fridges that have a great selection of the best UK, Scandinavian and German breweries (and much more).
F. M.
This place absolutely rocks. Even after the bottle shop is closed the bar tender goes above and beyond to get some cans to take home, I think her name was Sarah but not 100% but very Knowledgeable about beer and super helpful. Always make this a stop when I’m back in Scotland
A. T.
Really great beer bar with a huge selection of craft and specialty beer. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly. They also serve good burgers and wings. Their blue cheese sauce is delicious.
V. A.
This place is really nice and the staff as well. They have an exhaustive selection of beers.
O. t.
I don’t really like beer but they have great artisanal water! Sometimes it has pomegranate in!
T. F.
Friendly staff, small beer garden out back and nice decor inside.
Only just found this place despite loving beer and living nearby!
Had some delicious beers in the bar and took home a few from the very well stocked bottle shop. Pleased to find some Japanese beers i hadn't been able to find outside of Japan.
M. T.
Great beer, great food, great atmosphere, great pub. Enjoy!
C. A.
I like the place a lot and have taken visitors there several times. However, something has bugged me on a couple of occasions whereby a single staff member has been too hard line on how people should enjoy their drinks. Taste is subjective and insisting that someone should never drink out of a can, when they want to, is not very empathetic.
Especially when the only food served is buffalo wings and burgers, which I assume have been carefully paired with everything served...
What's more, if you serve coffee, people will want to add milk, even if the beans are particularly good.
S. R.
Fantastic beers and help from the team with huge selection. Loved the cheese burger with filthy fries!
J. C.
Amazing bar tucked away in the back streets of Edinburgh. 12 pages of beer, tons of variety! (Ok. with some food and stuff in there too.. But mostly beer) Decent prices for a hip craft beer place, and staff was happy to discuss tastes to help you choose a beer.
Warning: seems very popular on weekends, booking is advised if you want to eat there
J. M.
Nice bar massive selection of craft beers , really friendly knowledgeable staff, really recommend it.
N. M.
Awesome little place to have beers. Amazing selection of various brews. A big plus is the fact you can hold a conversation without having to yell. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Would recommend.
R. C.
Very nice bar and bottle shop with a huge selection of bottles, and a few good on tap as well, didn't have time to eat but food looked very nice as well. Bar staff are a bit aloof but friendly enough.
F. C.
A little bit out of the way but really easy to find and and not far off the royal mile. Nice little spot, husband really enjoyed all the beer they had. Food menu small but great, burgers and chips super tasty. Definitely recommended for somewhere different to try.
C. C.
Love this little place. Hidden away and cosy, perfect for a blether and always has a wonderful choice of amazing craft beers. Staff are all great too with a good knowledge of the beers.
N. C.
Great little pub in a good location. We visited twice during our 5 day trip because the beer selection was so good, the atmosphere was lovely, and staff were friendly. Shame that the food menu is so limited for vegetarians (not even chips!) and nothing for vegans so I couldn't eat. Fine if you eat before though!
J. P.
This is a great, small independent place.
I had a couple of beautiful, original craft beers, and a sublime burger (I'm not a huge fan of burgers, but would happily eat more of theirs!). Try it, if you can get in there!!
M. H.
I bumped into Salt Horse a few weeks ago when I was visiting Edinburgh and it was an amazing discovery. I don't usually write reviews but this place deserves it. If you love beer and food, or just an amazing atmosphere, this is the place to go. Good crowd, good and nice beer and good food (just add a bit more cheese next time! But loved it). Have fun with the endless beer menu if you go :)
J. B.
Great selection of beers, ales and stouts, tasty bar food and friendly/helpful staff. Definitely worth a visit and the shop they run a few doors down also has seating so try there if the bar is too busy!
D. M.
Very good burgers, very broad selection of international beers and regularly changing beers on the tap. Staff very friendly and accommodating, been there for years and still love it.
P.
Superb as always! Great beer check. Great food check.
G. P.
Great wee place with a superb range of tasty craft beers. Think they have 12 on at any one time, but don't quote me on that (like you were going to anyway).
The staff are friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. Taps on offer include a few popular choices like IPAs and porters, plus some more interesting sours and other varieties that I'm not going to pretend I know about.
They're all gid. Much mouthfeel.
Its maybe not for bigger groups or people who object to drinking {anything other than pints/stuff they haven't seen on the telly, "Dilly Dilly"/half pints at around a fiver a pop} (delete as applicable).
Their range also tends to have that craft beer strength thing going on, so savour and please drink responsibly. 😘
A. O.
Amazing small beer bar just off cowgate. Staff very friendly and know their beer. Very small though so hard to find seats during weekends. Somewhat clinicaln in atmosphere, but would recommend for beer enthusiasts who want to escape cowgate
m.
Outstanding selection of beers for take out or drinking on site with a sensible corkage fee. Loads of great draught products. Food from Meat Stack who do the kitchen was filthy good, like really filthy good. The kind of food you feel a bit guilty about afterwards and you need a wash.
R. C.
Hidden on a side street but what a great discovery! Also there was road construction going on which blocked access to this street, but that didn't keep the crowd away. This small space has a good selection of beers, some alcohol, and lots of tasty bites. Nothing complicated in the menu but the quality excels. I highly recommend this hidden gem.
S. L.
It is a very small pub essentially. If (and it can be a big if) you can get a seat, it is definitely one of the best places to drink in town. Wide range of beers and some great burgers/fries.
A. A.
It's so often the case that, in a major city, if you just take a turn off the beaten path, you can find some absolute gems. This is one of those gems. Fantastic beer selection, including moreish Sour beer, coupled with the best burgers and loaded fries you've ever had, make this place a destination for the descerning beer drinker. Visit now. No, seriously, right now!
K. M.
Great selection of beers on tap. Also had a burger that was pretty tasty. A good place to relax and enjoy a quality beer with friends.
S. C.
Awesome selection, amazing atmosphere. You can drink any bottle beer in the shop. Had a lovely quiet night in here reading my book and drinking great beer. One of the highlights of my trip to Edinburgh!
T. H.
Still the best place. Visit from Glasgow as often as I can. Knowledgeable, friendly staff, good beer, good times
S. W.
Might be (probably) the best bar / bottle shop combo I have ever visited.
Cosy beer café (13 taps) and shop next door that also has 6 taps plus actively promotes drink-ins (2 pounds corkage) 4 fridges and plenty of serious local / UK beer. Taps priced up a bit compared to London but to be fair not your average lagers and cask.
R. D.
So many beers there that we even found one that Joni liked! Very helpful and knowledgeable staff and the garden is a lovely space to be drink in and eat the amazing food that is also available. You are well fed and watered when you leave the Salt Horse! You have also had a great Edinburgh experience.
J. C.
Best place to go for a burger, really delicious freshly made patties and chips. Beer is delicious, fantastic range on tap or iPa's, wheat beer's, saison's and sour beer's we had 4different kinds, and our favourite was a blueberry muffin saison. Incredible!
C. B.
Great beer bar and bottle shop. They can help you find a beer you’ll really like!
A. C.
Can not recommend this place highly enough. Family of four went in for beers, burgers and sides and all concluded that it was excellent. Note, the chicken sides were the best thing we had and would probably serve as a nice accompaniment to have with a couple of beers in this place. Staff were on point also.
P. W.
Usually an amazing selection of beers, music sadly isnt to our taste but we didn't go for the tunes
S. A. Y.
Stop #2 on Scott Beer Tour, cool little place, in Cow Gate just off Grass Market. Easy walk from Royal Mile.
The beers and other available drinks were a great selection for such a small place.
Friendly helpful staff.
D. W.
Great beer! Only four stars because not in the least bit veggie friendly. There is a paneer burger, but all the fries are done in beef suet.
M. R.
Quite pricey, but I would say it's worth it. VAST selection of beers from all over the world. Outstanding burgers available, with buffalo wings and lovely fries too. Really good choice for a casual evening.
P. B.
Really nice selection of beers on tap and a great intimate setting.
A. P.
Even though it's a beer shop, they had some ciders that I've never tried before and they were great! The food is fantastic too. I loved the burger and beef fat chips!
S. W.
A great little pub nestled in the middle of the Old Town. Really intimate and old school. A really good selection of rotating craft beers on tap, and the shop next door is stacked full of different beers to take away
P. C.
One of the best beer bars in town. Top notch bottleshop next door
D. C.
Very interesting selection of craft keg beers and stunning selection of cans and bottles to either drink in or take out (cheaper) The printed beer list goes on for page after page. Highly recommended
J. O.
The burgers and fries at Salt Horse are like a ray of sunshine peeking through the clouds during a rainstorm. You should make a point of stopping here if you are by the royal mile. They also have beer and wine and a bottle shop next door to take away. The service was super friendly and quick.
M. S. (.
We've visited multiple places in Edinburgh, this one has really nice selection of quality beers. (Other one was Hanging Bat). Burgers were also good.
K. P.
Outrageous burgers, great selection of craft beers (schooners galore, natch) and has retained the same lovely atmosphere of the previous outfit. Not one for vegetarians or vegans to eat at as even the chips have been deep fried in beef drippings.
M. S.
Amazing range of rotating beers served by the 1/3 or 2/3. Lovely atmosphere and friendly staff. Burgers from meat stack are brilliant
E. M.
Burgers are very very tasty. Good mix of flavours. I had the plucky burger, didn't think haggis and chippy sauce was going to be so delicious!!
m. F.
Hundreds of bottled beers and some nice drafts, a competent and passionate staff, with a good atmosphere. Definitely will stop there on my next visit to Edinburgh. Highly recommended
I. V.
Relaxed atmosphere, happy place to enjoy good beers and pub foods.
S. L.
Best stop for craft beer in Edinburgh. Check out the bottle shop before you leave.
S. M.
Very pricey place, but the beers they sell wander into the realms of weird and wonderful. It has a nice atmosphere and the staff are quite helpful in assisting you with finding what style you're after.
Z. J.
Brilliant selection of beers and ciders, lovely little place
T. T.
Cosy of piste craft bar. With good selection for geeks and non geeks alike.
S. C. (. L. D.
Amazing burgers and great choice of beers. Barman was very helpful too. Cosy wee vibe in the place, ideal if you’re out for a pre-gig meal or ending a day of trekking round the city.
Н. А.
Great and original selection of beer, friendly barmen and delicious finger-food.
Must visit if you want to fulfil your Scottish beer experience.
D. G.
Great, ever-changing tap and bottle selection. Friendly, knowledgeable staff and the food from Jones and Sons pop-up is delicious - the best wings and chips in the city.
M. M.
This is the best Lambic and Sour beer shop I have found so far on this planet. I wish that could be next to my home, but no, just 400 miles away, Damn!
S. C.
A nice little hidden gem off the royal mile which I knew nothing about until someone suggested we visit one Friday night. There are two parts to it - a bar (which serves some food) and a beer shop with many bottles to purchase - to take away or drink in. 'Pints' in the bar were those smaller 2/3 ones. We were orginially going to sit in the bottle shop and just have a coffee, but they'd just turned the machine off for the evening. Would certainly return.
S. S.
Fantastic selection of beer. Even have a special Fonteinen fridge (drink in only). Will go back when I'm next in Edinburgh.
s. w.
Top notch bar. Good selection of beers on tap, extra options from the bottle shop nextdoor and a very friendly chap behind the bar. Food good too.
E. R.
Great selection, I enjoyed my Dry January option which the staff helpfully advised upon.
S. M.
12 taps. Good variety of IPA, stout and sour. If nothing floats your boat here, pop next door for a huuuuge can and bottle selection. Just pay corkage if you fancy bringing it back to the bar.
L. O.
So many great beers, constantly changing and have new stuff to try everytime I visit. Has a handy little bottleshop included for taking some beer home with you
R.
Never had a disappointing meal here. Burgers and chicken wings are super tasty. Beers on tap are always changing, and the staff are super helpful
A. M.
Some great, reasonably priced burgers from Jones & Son (@bespokebbq) and an amazing, ever changing selection of beers! Tucked away, just off the royal mile, this place is worth looking out. Enjoy.
C. M.
Awesome place. Great beer, great food and great service. Every bit as good as the Meat Stack in Newcastle. You should visit, you need to.
C. H.
Love this cosy little bar. Great selection of craft beers on tap. Beer shop is well stocked with local and imported craft brews. Staff are knowledgeable.
B. P.
Great selection and great staff. Could do with a few more gluten free beers but that's my only minor gripe
S.
Great bar with a fantastic range of beers. Food was excellent too (although the fries were a little too salty). Had a great chat with the barman too. Pretty pricy though!
D. S.
One of the finest bars in Edinburgh, with a fantastic selection of craft beers - and now serving food! Top tip: There is a strong selection of drink in the bottle shop.
E. M.
Great beer selection, food was good and staff are helpful and friendly. Beers can be pricey but ultimately quality over quantity 👌
v. W.
Great bar with ever changing craft beer taps. Also has a huge selection of interesting and diverse bottled craft beer available as off sale and for in house consumption. This is a hidden gem
J. H.
Great beer selection, helpful and friendly staff. Best burger, fries and wings I have had in a long time. I’ll be back.
I. J.
Nice for a quick beer food looked good too
A. T.
Nice beers but crazy prices to sit in. You end paying for a 2/3 pint (from a can) more than you would for a full in a pub that has the same beer on tap
D. S.
Excellent beer selection, best burgers in Edinburgh (once Covid buggers off)
M. M.
Great beer bar with superb beer collection. Did not try the food. They serve burgers and fries etc. The beer is the reason to go!
M. M.
Great venue. Great beer. Friendly & helpful staff. Will be back.👍🍻
R. C.
Small craft ale pub, roughly 20 beers on offer. Also sells wines and spirits. Shop next door is part of the pub to buy and take away bottles and cans.
W. M.
Good selection of interesting beers IPA was great as was mocachino stout. And the burgers are dirty and haggis fries awesome.
C. L.
Fab selection of drinks, lovely atmosphere and very friendly staff
W. L.
EXCELLENT selection. Picked up a bottle of 3F (albeit at a $$ price).
M. R.
good beer selection, great loaded fries, but the butter bacon burger is exactly what a burger is supposed to taste like, absolutely perfect.
d. P.
Nice, small place. Has a good selection of beers in the store next door that is connected with the place. The guy serving us was friendly and chatty.
T. B.
Excellent beers, and so friendly staff that gives great advices! Love it! And there are so many different beers, anyone will be happy with it ☺️
S. W.
Super friendly staff. Great beer selection. Didn't eat but the food looked amazing.
F. B.
Really friendly staff and great range of beers.

W. M.
Amazing wee bar and great choice of beers! Will definitely be there again!

P. G.
Small place. Some good beers and the burgers were fantastic. Walked in the shop first before realising the bar is next door.
J. B.
Good price for beers and burgers. But several beers on the menu were unavailable (but it's common with a varied inventory)
A. C.
If you’re into craft beer you have not excuse not to come here!
S. T.
Excellent range of craft beers & ciders.
Very friendly& knowledgeable staff.
Craft beer shop attached next door.

This is a fab bar if you are a beer lover, staff super knowledgeable and lovely for a chat. A small outside area that is cute as well.
A. S.
The burgers are so tasty. Just amazing. And the filthy fries were the best.
Slight hipster leaning crowd but still worth a visit.
L. M.
Good selection of beer but not much atmosphere on a Saturday night visit. Location of the tables are a little too close together and facing the wall!
M. G.
Delicious burgers, but beer is way too expensive. The place itself looks so-so, nothing special really, but not hideous too.
A. C.
Great beer selection with very friendly and helpful staff

Superb range of beer. Far enough out of the way that you stand a good chance of getting a table as a walk-in, even during the Festival.
S. B.
Great service, lovely vibes. Extensive selection of beers (of course), and some small bites to eat on the menu too.
J. L.
Ever changing selection of real ales off of a eclectic variety. One of my favourite real ale bars in Edinburgh at the moment.
