Great lunch right off the Royal Mile with amazing toasties…Eleanor was top notch and made us feel right at home especially since we had our 13 month old daughter with us..kid friendly, great food, and a laid back atmosphere…will definitely be going back!

We visited this pub twice during our trip to Edinburgh as it was fairly close to our hotel. The first time was for drinks only, and with a good range of gins we stayed for several. The following night (Sunday) we went back and ate there too. Again, very friendly, quieter than Saturday but steadily busy. Both times we had the same window seat, looking out at the rain! Last orders were 21:15. My wife had scampi, I had the steak pie, both were good. I just wish the meat pie had been shortcrust like the vegan option, but it was still very tasty. Really good experience, thank you

Great place for food and drink in the heart of Edinburgh, suitable for families most pubs in Edinburgh aren’t. Recommend the steak pie or haggis pie. Chocolate fudge cake is amazing, excellent service.

Been here twice for a meal after being a the theatre. Had a lovely meal the first time attended to by Josh. He was extremely pleasant and very attentive. We returned a fortnight later because everything was so good the first time this time we were attended to by Eleanor who was also extremely pleasant and attentive. Absolutely coming back. Our party of 10 (5 adults, 5 kids between 7 and 13) chose this as our dinner option after a Mercat underground tour because its signage said it was family-friendly and had a great 2-for meal deal. Luckily they had space for us. Sadly I don't have any photos of the food because by the time it came we were too hungry and just had to dig in, but they were short-staffed and made sure to let us know, so we were patient and understanding, and they were otherwise very sweet and provided great service. All of our dinners and desserts were delicious. The only exception might be the kids pizza that my daughter didn't care for. Which was especially sad because it replaced her order of lasagna, as they were out of it. But she didn't starve since she had also ordered the kids pasta just in case (clever lass). And I had plenty to share with my Favorites Platter as a dinner. I loved having little bits of everything! Glad we got off the beaten path and followed the whim that led us here.

Really nice and friendly little pub close to the mile. Clearly they were super busy and short-staffed when we went in but even with the restrictions and limitations our host did not lose her calm or became impatient. Good was decent but the service simply amazing. Good choice of beers and drinks to go along too. It's recommend this any day. Thanks.

I had the big fish and chips which was huge and very good and my wife had the vegan burger which she said was also delicious. We were greeted by David, who found us a table quickly, and our food was served by Daisy. We were given more drinks after eating by Poppy. Not a coincidence, apparently they're sisters, which just goes to show that family can work well together. Service and food were both a 10/10.

Typical student bar, plush interior, several TV screens, plenty of space. Must have missed covid instructions on the way in because the staff member was rude to us. Unfortunately this put the experience on a negative back foot, but can't blame the facility itself. Not a bad selection of whisky's.

Really nice pub with a vibrant, bustling atmosphere. The new manager Davy has certainly had a positive impact on transforming this pub in to the place it once was. Poppy and Daisy are very friendly and deliver an amazing service, and cant do enough for the customers. I would highly recommend giving this little gem of a pub a try.

Good location and good food. There is a wide variety of beers and ciders. The hamburger is a bit small, however it is tasty as well. I would prefer the other dishes because the portion is bigger. You can try hier huggis as well (local sausage made from lamb). The famous Brew Dog beer is available as well :)

Nice food and drinks, the highlight was the Veg Haggis & Tatties dish which most of the Scottish pubs don't do however The Advocate nailed it smashingly. Woul highly recommend if you are a Vegetarian and don't wanna miss out the Haggis from your bucket list 👍

Very nice pub. We went in at 10pm on a Saturday night and was very busy but we got a seat ok. The staff at the bar were very friendly, attentive and helpfully. One of the girls at the bar even helped me with the drinks by taken them to the table we were at. The toilet was clean and tidy, only drawback was the long walk down to the toilets. The pub itself was clean and very good atmosphere.

A really good pub. Well socially distanced (written during 2020). Attentive staff. Good food at decent prices. The automatic set up of a tab is great for if you just want to chill with mates for a few hours. Which is exactly what we were there for :)

Typical chain pub. Very friendly staff. Hi owner in response to your below email I would suggest I little more care with the condition of the menus on the table and expand slightly the daily specials. Minor stuff, but I have to say the staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Thoroughly enjoyed my mulled wine and nice to have even in Feb. Definitely a winter drink and not just for Christmas.

Nice, friendly pub/bar. We went in for a drink at 7 o’clock on a Tuesday evening and it was quiet but not empty, with a very friendly barman who quickly served drinks and crisps. I think I saw people eating there also, although we didn’t try that. I’d definitely come back, as it was inexpensive too.

Came here at recommendation by another pub that was full. The food was excellent as was the staff. Courteous, friendly, and attentive staff made the experience complete on top perfectly cooked food. We had Hunter’s chicken, Mac N Chesse, Big Fish, Chicken platter, and Bacon Cheese burger. Everyone’s food was perfect. In a side note, we loved the onion rings, absolutely the BEST we’ve ever had, if you ever get a chance to eat here, GET THE ONION RINGS I seriously cannot stress this enough.

Swiftly turned into a favourite pub. It’s beautiful and they offer everything a thirsty person could desire. Great beer selection, the food is better than just solid (bit too much batter on the haggis fritters) but otherwise tremendously great, perfect tele setup and the staff are really really really nice. Their mulled wine is particularly excellent during the Christmas season. It gets packed quite fast because they’re just that good. Next door is a lovely comedy club which makes this an even more compelling offering.

I threw my birthday party here. The staff were fab and friendly. The house was ok with us playing Persian music despite using my speakers. We danced and had good drinks. It is the place you and your friends would enjoy at.

Average food with fairly poor service. I think my waiter may have been new and stressed so I tried to be patient but I had to get up and ask him to take my order (after 20 minutes - and still waited a while after I asked), waited to receive the food, and then waited equally long to pay my check. He offered a free beer to make up which was nice, but I declined. As he gave me the check he said “the second one has been removed” but I only ever had the one. My food was decent at a moderate price.

I do like this pub, but they were terribly under staffed for a Saturday afternoon (1 waitress and one bar person). Usually the staff are friendly but for this visit she barely broke a smile and the waiting was just too long. Food great as always, drink very reasonable.

This is nice traditional place, also frequented by the locals. We were looking for a place to have lunch and a pint, and specifically picked The Advocate because it wasn't listed on Trapadvisor. The food was nice, the staff was friendly, the beer not too cold. My wife and son had fish and chips, two sizable dishes and I had a haggis potato pie.

This pub is nice and spacious inside with a few large TVs to view sports on. The location is good just off the royal mile so it's not busy with tourists. A decent selection of beer and vegan fish & chips made this place a win for us.

Nice cosy place. The waitress was very friendly and attentive. Unfortunately the food was basic Wetherspoons fare. I asked if I could have a poached egg instead of a fried egg and was told the chef didn't want to as he didn't feel confident enough! A chef who can't poach an egg isn't a chef. Just someone who heats up precooked food.

Nice pub, with excellent wait staff in the food area. Space is limited and it's in a busy central area, so expect to find it packed out early, and all day during festival period. Food is good standard pub fair, with plenty of veggie and some vegan options (vegan fish and chips is nice). Fair beer selection, with guest ales on tap, and a good spirits selection. My only complaint is that it is always too hot. Been going to it off and on for ten years (I miss when it was independent, quirky and everything on the menu was sausage and mash, like wild boar, venison, unusual flavours, vegan) and it's always too hot in there. There is an air con unit but it's never used.

This is a great place, but it is NOT a gay bar, even though it pops up when Googling "gay bars in Edinburgh." There were two gay people there (including me), so we asked the bar-tender. He was totally cool, but said, "No, it's not a gay bar." I said, "Well, you would know!" He said, "Yeah, I guess I would," then directed us to another neighborhood where we could find one.

This pub has just been renovated and the decor is bright and spacious. Very busy at peak times since the food is delicious and priced sensibly despite being in the heart of The Old Town. One of my mother's favourite places for lunch in Edinburgh.
