Great place. Staff were lovely. Very friendly. Think our server was Diego? I was driving and had my 16 year old so we didn't partake of the spectacular looking cocktail menu. I had the fish and chips and daughter had chicken and chips. Both amazing(Black fish was a new one!) But very tasty. Will be back with the missus to try something stronger

Great cocktails if you like them sweet. Not my bag but everyone else in our group loved them. Great theater with dry ice and smoke. Food was really good and decent value for money. Great service from the attentive staff as well.

We had the most amazing time here. Cassandra (sorry if I've got that wrong) totally made our night. The drinks were delicious but the service made them come alive! Definitely recommend the mad hatter cocktail for two, and have to say we are normally margarita drinkers so we finished with some spicy margaritas (no picture) and they were some of the best we ever had. Can't wait to come back for special occasions.

Great time here last night for an anniversary meal with my partner. The food was incredible - we both got steak and it was cooked perfectly, melt in your mouth. The drinks were great too! We each had 2 cocktails and I can't recommend them enough.

On a visit to the new St. James centre in Edinburgh we were looking for a place to have breakfast. On the left at the ground floor entrance to the centre was what looked like the entrance to a private club or apartments. On closer inspection it turned out to be The Alchemist, which by the sign outside was advertising breakfast and lunch. The dining area/ bar access is by lift at this level, although we did notice another exit/entrance to the centre onto the second floor. We hadn't booked for breakfast but were given a table. The breakfast that came to the table was very nice, with only a couple of niggles, the scrambled eggs could of had an extra minute of cooking as there was still some watery white in it and the toast could of been a bit more, well, toasted. However these two small niggles would not put us off coming again. The area we were in was very nice, a really good place to have food and drinks, the prices were on par with similar establishments in the area. The servers were polite, prompt and well presented. The toilets were spotless, well done the person who looks after them, the best toilets in Edinburgh.

I came here for the Christmas menu and I have to say both the food and drinks were meh (perhaps explains the very reasonable price compared to their a la carte menu). It’s supposed to be a very exclusive place but instead feels like a fancier, more expensive version of whetherspoons. I would go another time to try their cocktails but will not have the food again.

A very nice intimate bar, the drinks are super fun with the theatricals of it all, it’s a nice change from standard bars. The staff seem to enjoy what they do explaining how the cocktails work which adds to the fun time to be had here. We were served by Georgia who was super lovely, very friendly and answered all sorts of questions we had about the cocktails giving us recommendations and explaining how they work. Overall a lovely bar with brilliant staff and super fun drinks!

Got here just before noon thinking it a bit strange to be starting so early on the cocktails. Second through the door but the place soon filled up so we weren't the only ones. Large selection of cocktails both traditional and with the Alchemist theatrical twist. Enjoyed my 2 hours there.

The experience to be had in the alchemist is amazing. Their showy cocktails are a lot of fun. The food was delicious, and the staff friendly. It's quite expensive for what you get, and the service was quite slow, but it was worth it for the experience.

Took my partner here for her birthday as we've been eagerly awaiting this place opening for a very long time! Happy to say that this place was absolutely amazing. The service from the second we walked in to the moment we left couldn't be better. There was Lucy M who brought us many of our theatrical drinks and was super nice and a lovely lady with a gold chain on who took our table, she was so helpful and warming to welcoming us. Everything from the menus to the decor looked beautiful and the food is top quality. Thank you for giving my partner the best birthday.

It's a very fun cocktail bar! Most cocktails are prepared with dry ice, smoke or some other effect. I'd recommend ordering only one or two drinks at a time and watch them being prepared at the bar. We ordered 7 at the same time, which the bartender impressively managed simultaneously, although it got a bit chaotic and you can't really focus on every single one. Otherwise we had a great time!

Had a very nice time here. Would say book if possible, especially if you're a group more than two as it is very popular. Staff were great and as efficient as possible, while making complex drinks and entertaining customers. One guy in particular, no idea his name, was extremely fun, remembered us each time we went up, and was also very good at running the place. Drinks were fun, inventive and prices ranged from the same price as any other cocktail in this city, to mid-high range, although sometimes you got something with it (hipflask etc). Liked the theatricality of it all, and would definitely go back with a big group for a special occasion.

Fantastic experience with my two daughters drinks were spot on with the servers explaining the different options. One wee thing to watch out for is the service charge. If you are happy to pay it fair enough though it will be a percentage of the bill. I opted for it to be removed and tipped the server myself. An honest review....

Very popular place. Pre book if u want a good seat. Drinks are works of art and a form of entertainment with drama and colour. Dry🍹 ice can transform your refreshment experience. There can be a long queue at the bar with only the one person creating the works of art. But nobody seemed too bothered about the wait. Very laid back and chilled customers on the day I was there.

As good as the pictures look, my daughter and myself were quite disappointed, Friday afternoon and most of the cocktails on the menu were not available. The staff members were super friendly and attentive, but you could see that even for them it was embarrassing that they had to tell customers that over half of the menu was not available. Nice place. Staff lovely and very welcoming. Fair prices. We were there for breakfast. Food is tasty but we were let down by it (every dish) being a little cold and everyone's eggs (a mix of poached, scrambled & fried) were all slightly overcooked. Regarding the cold food, we could see it waiting on the pass so I think the problem was their not getting it out to the table quick enough. It wasn't busy so this was disappointing. Couple of tweaks though and The Alchemist could be bang on and we would go back for sure.

Fantastic drinks, some looked like chemistry experiment and tasted great. Fab atmosphere with live music when we were in. I would have given 5* but toilets were on need of attention with toilet roll etc. When you are paying £8+ for some drinks I think the least you can expect are fully stocked facilities. I did make staff aware of shortages.

All cocktails were delicious and a cracking wine menu but service is rather confusing. Stood at a bar with one person saying he will serve 5 different groups of people while another stood on “their side” with no one. I asked could he serve me, as 10 mins had passed and I was snappily told no. Then a lot of shouting and an over the top theatre show occurred, all while everyone was stood waiting on drinks. Felt disappointing because the cocktails were amazing, but on a Wednesday quiet night, service could be improved.

Legit drinks, make sure you have your camera or video ready for your entertainment! All the drinks we had were well worth it and were a conversation piece even after the night was over. We just went for the drinks, so I can't speak on the food itself. The bartenders were friendly and very helpful and were great at asking questions if you were unsure on what you were wanting to drink.

Could not be more happy with our experience at the alchemist! We arrived half an hour late to our booking due to my own fault getting mixed up! Even with it being our own fault they were so accommodating and made sure we still got a table for dinner and drinks despite it being super busy! Rude wait staff/manager in this location. They made us wait outside in freezing cold for like 35+mins when there were tables clearly available and freeing up. Then when we asked the second time about wait time, another employee just gave us one of the empty table/counter which was already open for a while! We loved the drinks and food at London location and hence visited this one. The drinks were great. Hope the communication improves while people are waiting.

Me and My friend were catching up after a long overdue mate date and thought to try The Alchemist on Tuesday Night. The drinks were amazinggg and a fun touch and the food even better would highly recommend. What stood out the most though was our waitress Lucy Palmer, she was such a delight from start to finish your lucky to have someone so upbeat and welcoming/friendly on your team!! We engaged in conversation throughout the night having a laugh, when there was a shortage of drinks and food she couldn't be more lovely about it explaining it was due to the time of year and even asked what our plans was afterwards and meant it 😊!! Myself and my partner booked for the 18th of November , met by the guy on the door he told us where to go , he was very polite and friendly , we arrived upstairs and got seated within 2 mins of arriving , the service we received by Ross was second to none , he was very friendly to us both .I spoke to the manager Claire who was so lovely to us both (Clair thank you so so much for what you done for us , we were both very shocked and surprised by your kind gesture , it won’t be forgotten ) can say it enough the food the service the layout and the staff it was all fantastic and we can’t wait to visit the next time we are in Scotland , thank to you all again Paul and phil .

style over substance unfortunately, i had the lamb koftas they were brick solid, served on a griddle plate with some generic tomato sauce poured on at the table. My GF had the fajitas, again had better out a nearby chain restaurant. It was strange because the main courses arrived no more than 5 minutes after ordering, minus the salt & pepper chips and onion rings side that arrived once we had finished, we thought perhaps we had been served someone elses food. on a positive the drinks are interesting and fun, whole lot of theatrical bubbles, popping candy and dry ice going on there They will add a service charge and a donation to charity on to your bill

We had so much fun here! Their table booking organisation isn’t the greatest - we had to wait 20 mins after our booking to be seated and the waiters didn’t make it clear to us when they needed our table back (mostly out of politeness, but we would have headed to the bar faster if we’d known). However, the staff caught the mistake and were super lovely and apologetic. We didn’t mind the wait as the bartenders were so entertaining and we could get drinks at the bar while we waited. It’s pretty much all table service, but you can go and order drinks at the bar - I’d probably recommend trying this because you can see more fire and fun, and the bartenders are a great laugh. It’s quite dear but you’re paying for the experience; and to be honest I’ve seen far worse Edinburgh prices. The drinks were lovely - so much theatre to them. Dry ice, fire, smoke, little saucepans, colour changes and more. Great menu with loads of options. The feedback element at the end was a lovely touch - as a customer you are really able to give your feedback. Lots of staff and we were checked up on often. Very busy place. Great atmosphere too.

Loooove it! Cool ambiance! Tasty drinks with flare! I had the Caramelised Jungle Bird and the Dead Red Zombie(my favorite). The bites were yum; I had some shishito peppers that were perfectly charred and seasoned. Oh, I must also mention they had a banging playlist; had me in the corner straight vibing and it wasn’t just the alcohol lol good music!
