We only popped in for a quick beer and plate of chips, but they still provided excellent service. Skeleton guitarist added to the rock decor. So black inside that it was odd to come back out into daylight!

This place really wasn't what I expected to be honest. The music was good but the atmosphere was a bit wet otherwise. Staff didn't seem overly happy or engaging. The bouncer was actually one of the better parts of the customer service at this place, super friendly and helpful.

Quite the traditional little Scottish public house in pedestrian Rose Street. Polite staff and a good selection of both beers and whiskeys. A pint of McEwans 70/- and a double of Balvenie had me sorted!

Despite the fact that it seems to be a crammed place, the time we spent in there was awesome. The food is delicious, the staff is fast and friendly and the music was to our taste. I would recommend giving this place a visit as it is right in the heart of the restaurants area in the city centre.

It was an evening we chose something without investing. We walked by and felt the name charming same as the door man. It is an order at the bar establishment however when we were ordering a gentleman took our table. Fortunately another table had cleared and we were quickly seated. Busy place, great drinks but not wine if that is what you are looking for. Baked potatoes are good here.

Nice hangout and great friendly staff. But.... The table numbers are laminated and stuck to the table with Blu Tack, on moving it it's clear it's not been cleaned underneath them. It stank of stale vinegar. On the whole though it's not a bad little bar

The portion sizes are huge, not a place to have a light lunch but a Viking feast. The haggis nachos are a Scottish twist on the TexMex classic, Although unique the dish itself was rather bland and could use more than just a tiny amount of quac, sour cream and salsa to accommodate the massive dish. The gin selection was rather nice and diverse. I went on Halloween and the decor was great.

Went in for a drink and just a snack. Nothing small enough on the menu, panina came with chips etc. Sat down to just have a drink when the chef came out and offered to just make us a toasted sandwich ( which is what we wanted) perfect. Brilliant service 👏 👌

I enjoyed my visit here. Good atmosphere with a mixed crowd of all sorts. Bit of a rock bar it seemed music memorabilia adorning the walls. It's a small place but this added to the warm environment. Didn't eat but the menu looked to be fairly broad and reasonably priced. Would go back.

Just stumbled across The Black Rose Tavern and very glad that I did! Great atmosphere with fantastic music. We didn't get any food, but it looked quite good. Love the signs in the bathrooms with the "Ask for Angela" campaign, helping men and women who feel threatened to get out and get home safely. Would love to come back when live music was on.

They are charitable without being too in your face and are actually doing things not just offering tins for your change. A brilliant place. And you can see them cool your food so if you don't want to eat be prepared to be tempted by the smells... Grand place.

Smells a bit like chips, as the kitchen is open in one corner of the pub, however it's a good place for a reasonably priced drink and some live music of an evening. The bar seems very supportive of anti-drink spiking and other safeguarding measures which is always good to see. Would definitely visit again.

Been here a few times and never had any problems. Friendly staff (although one of the girls in today looked like she really didn't wanna be there today, but i was only in for a pint) it is a pretty small bar though, so its a bit hit or miss whether you get a seat. Bit if you like friendly staff, good food and a good rock/metal themed bar, check it out.

The sister bar to "Banshees Labyrinth" the Black Rose Tavern has a more laid back vibe to it. Also had a burger in there, was good food. Finally the staff were/are so friendly and welcoming, because of that we're going to make the effort to get back there as soon as we can.

Wandered down the street and happened upon this place....and so very happy I did! They had table service, great beer selection, and yummy food! I got fish and chips that overflowed a large plate. I had no chance of eating it all. The bartender who was the waiter was attentive and kind. The music wasn't half bad either!

Lovely little gem of a pub hidden away. Finally found a lively bar that's got the characteristics I've been looking for like an Irish bar. Friendly staff, friendly people who would chat away and an added bonus of entertainment thrown in. Be it karaoke that night but some singers were actually very good.

Visited this small but friendly pub on a Thursday night and wasn't disappointed. I had fish & chips which was well priced because the portion was large and the food was of high quality in terms of freshness and taste. The drinks I had were also good, they have 7 cocktails on offer (50ml spirit) which are £4.50 each and they have several types of 'bombs' too. My other half had a wrap which unfortunately wasn't fully cooked as the cheese wasn't melted at all therefore I cannot give this place 5 stars.

Love this pub, always visit a few times while in Edinburgh but for some reason this time the lingering smell of fried food especially on our clothes wasn't nice. Its a great pub but think it would be better just for drinks and not doing food, sorry guys. All bar staff are great and live acts were great.

Lovely place offering some nice local beers as well as some live music. Prices are lower than the pubs near the Royal Mile. We went for just one drink but stayed all evening due to a wonderful performance by Rob Kilmurry and a great service. When I spilled my drink by accident the bartender offered me a new one without charge.

My wife and I were in Edinburgh for a few days, achieving the tourist "gold award" during the day ( I don't think we missed anything we wanted to see) and off to find decent food and friendly watering hole in the evening. Great mix of locals and visitors alike, wide choice of draft and bottled beers, wine and spirits, and a varied food menu that is sensibly priced for a city centre Pub. Worth a visit with entertainment on most nights, the staff were exceptional and very attentive, Kirsty has to be worth a mention, she really looked after us during our stay. You will not be disappointed.

Just happened upon this awesome pub while searching for food during a day trip to Edinburgh. The owners were lovely. It was table service and they made sure we were okay for drinks. I had the Fiery Scotsman burger and my husband had the nachos with chilli. Both huge portions which is what we love! NB: this was with the regular nachos not the large and still huge!

A great place to have lunch and dinner at! The set of the day is great cheap alternative if you are tight on budget. The portion is relatively big compared to the price you paid for it. Have tried the Aberdeen Beef burger twice and loved the consistency of the burger! Great taste and flavour! Also do try the fish and chips as well! I like a jaunt down The Rose, the selection of drinks is pretty standard, they play hold rock music and I remember The Rose Burger being pretty epic. I think it is worth a drop in but not my first choice!
