Reviews of The Blue Blazer
K. M.
Great little spot with local vibes, craft beer, and a fair selection of whisky at affordable prices.
Had a Jura 12 and an Ardbeg 10. Nice warmth as the sun comes through the windows. Cozy back area with some board games and a few tables. Wonder if they ever have fires in the fireplace? Staff was super friendly and helpful as well! Would return.
G. D.
Good boozer. Might be regarded as an “Old Man’s pub” but it has a good selection of ales and a reasonable amount of whisky and spirits. Friendly staff, normally fairly easy to get a seat, got a fire. Could do with the upholstery getting re-done but let’s put that down to rustic charm.
C. L.
A traditional pub with lots of beers on offer. Has lots of whisky boxes adorning the window sills. Very busy and lively when we visited. A cask beer and a pint of cider cost around £10.
I. W.
A brilliant traditional pub with a fine variety of cask ales, whiskies and possibly others but, being a fan of the barley, difficult to say. Music levels low enough to allow conversation, absence of big screens a boon. Sadly, for me, some way off normal migration passages, nevertheless it's certainly worth a detour and, indeed, a journey when a blether and a beer is on order.
a. h.
Nice bar but just your typical bar on the corner so nothing new with that But that's my preference on pubs but it has a decent pint and friendly staff. Looking for a quirky spot it's not here
B. S.
Definitely one of my top 3 favourite pubs in Edinburgh. Cozy old man's pub feeling whilst staying on top of new gins and whiskys - great selection of bar snacks also.
A. T.
Nice old style man's pub, basic decor, staff normally nice but on last visit barmaid although pleasant enough was rather domineering on use of face masks.
B. M.
Great neighbourhood pub, cask & keg ales all looked after well. Huge spirits collection and friendly staff to guide you through them
B. R.
Excellent range of whisky, rum and beer. Served with charm and a passion for their workplace. All social distancing and hygiene measures explained and complied with, without being overbearing. I will definitely be back soon. Save me a seat. Keep up the great work.
M. A.
Great traditional pub with range of real ale and a coal fire...what more do you want?
S. H.
This place is a traditional pub with a good selection of beers, whiskys, rums & bourbons.
a. G.
Was very relaxed, quite quiet when we were in. Can imagine the open fire would be excellent on a cold day.
A. M.
The most ambient pint I’ve ever had. Thanks for a wonderful experience.
M. L.
Very good real ale pub. Polite staff. No cash payment allowed for some strange reason so don't forget your debit card. Ideally positioned in the usher hall area so good for a pre show drink...
A. H.
Great staff member (red haired girl), awesome range of whiskies, open fire and gluten free Pilsner. How can I give it less than 5 stars?
D. R.
Nice relaxing pub.good selection of beers
T. A.
Small friendly pub good staff and beer
B. T.
Cracking little pub, two folk that were working on the Saturday night (guy and a girl young) great service and chat
J. W.
Great pint if ale 🍻👍🏻, a little on the string side for a session X 🥴😂🤣
S. A.
Had emailed Alex regarding booking a table on 29/5 @ 8pm and got a prompt reply, saying they had one.
When we went in, it was very safely organised by the hardworking bar staff, more than likely the safest environment I have socialised in.
The four of us enjoyed the pub,the ultra prompt service and our drinks.
Thank you to the staff for a good night
M. A.
Nice place with good selection of Whiskey and beer. The Barmaid was friendly and had good recomendations.
10/10 will go again when i visit Edinburgh
M. B.
I came to this pub two years ago after my friend, who was living in Edinburgh, recommended it. We popped in for a pint, or four and had an absolute blast, really good selection of beers and whiskeys and a lively feel as it was packed.
I have returned on my own and I've found the venue very much the same as it was, even with the passage of time. Its got a nice vibe to it, music not too loud to allow talking amongst friends. The Beer and whiskey selection is still outstanding, with almost a dozen ales available and friendly bar staff.
P. E.
Loved. A nice local pub for local people and tourists. It's a nice place for a drink and for board games. It's not a sports bar, which means that can have a table for a drink and a chat. The music they play in the background is great. Nice staff too, who knows they're beers and can recommend. Will return.
G. D.
Sadly very quiet when we went in to escape the sweltering heat. Good selection of beers across two toom.
I look forward to going back in an evening when normality returns.
B. A.
The barman with the tattoo may be a d ick but he makes a perfect Old Fashioned!
E. T.
Fabulous rums, whiskies, tequilas and real ales in a cozy little old school bar, reminiscent of the sort of place Rebus might drink in. Fab staff and clientele
A.
-Friendly barman
-Board and card games available, we played Uno
-Cosy
-Nice atmosphere
-Trial Period (Zero Waste Scotland) flyers in ladies toilets encouraging to use reusables instead of disposable period products which is great to see as I personally use period knickers and love them!
G. C.
A great wee pub kind of hidden from the main drag but certainly one worth visiting. Tuesday afternoon just popped in for a pint and stayed for a few. Barmaid was lovely and made time for some chat. It gave off the feeling that it was just a really nice pub. Had a good selection of beers which the host was very informed about.
A. B.
We were the only people in the pub and Mathew (hope I've remembered his name right) was super helpful picking whiskeys and just generally friendly. Service was great. Had to give 5 stars for him. Great wee pub.
R. K.
Cracking proper boozer. Plenty of cask choice and comfortable surroundings.
A. S.
Very conveniently situated , cozy little pub .
L. M.
One of the consistently good real ale pubs in Edinburgh...always a good choice.
D. S.
Decent pint and they were enforcing mask wearing which is comforting to see
L. P.
Good selection of beers, spirits and cocktails. Pleasant bar staff. Cosy atmosphere.
M. M.
I love this place, the mosaic was created in 1889, but the pub started around 20 years earlier. Nice rums, whiskeys and beers also ciders. Just pop in and relax. Well appreciated. Thumbs up
S. F.
A classic Edinburgh pub. Good beers and whisky. Feels like it's been there forever. Friendly staff.
A. D.
If you are looking for a pub with a local authentic feel just off the Mai. Drag this is the place. This small corner pub has a great selection of beers on tap and a wide collection of scotch whiskeys to try. No cooked food available. The pub can be full of people and you won't need to shout to have a conversation. Stools are a bit old and a few should be replaced soon.
D. B.
It has plaques and history and good beers on tap. The place is however absolutely tiny. Finding a place to sit would be nigh impossible and on a Friday or Saturday night is standing room only with personal space being rare. Bar staff were present although far too few for the throng of people baying for drinks. I imagine the charm of this place comes out when it's much less busy.
J. W.
Really great pub with food range of beers at decent prices. We went for a couple of pints during a quiet afternoon and it was the perfect spot.
B. F.
Lovely little dog friendly bar in the city
M. S.
Fantastic traditional pub: oak panels & a fire when it's cold!
Always an interesting selection of beers available on nice, tasty clean lines & the whisky selection ain't to be sniffed at either.
A pub in the nobelist of traditions!
G. T.
Charming pub in Edinburgh. No food served, but you can get a selection of beers and snacks. Friendly attentive service.
E. C.
Great to be back in The Blue Blazer. Well organised with clear instructions regarding wearing of masks, contact details, seating etc. Although atmosphere obviously different due to covid it was good to meet up with couple of friends. Warmly greeted by Alex who provided prompt and friendly service. Good selection of beers
K.
Great pub, cosy, traditional and great beers.
d. l.
A cracking old - school pub. Cosy, with a real fire to warm you up on cold days. Great selection of craft beers and bottles. Lots of choice of spirits too, especially rum. Staff are always friendly and welcoming.
M. G.
Great Pub with a vast variety of Ales. Thumbs up!
V. D.
Friendly pub, nice relaxed area of Edinburgh
C. M.
Great place. Large selection of beer and whisky, friendly and informative staff, rotating deals on whisky and rum of the moment, and an incredible playlist. Also, more chairs/stools than will hopefully ever be necessary.
A. B.
I'm a pub rookie, so I'll describe it briefly. It is a quiet pub with a TV, we were watching England vs Scotland rugby match there. They serve some simple good foods and a selection of beers and whiskeys. My overall impression is that it is good, but a bit overpriced.
B. P.
Honestly a perfect pub. Nice clientele, telly turned off, no football, just people quietly chatting and drinking. I only wish that they had a cheaper beer option than their usual selection of lovely crafts, because I like a drink after work, but I suppose a £2 pint would change the vibe.
D. L.
Proper old skool type pub. Nice beer selection. Friendly staff.
l. m.
Proper pub with a great selection of cask ales and bar staff that know their beer. Properly pulled pints at a good price. Not to far from the royal mile but seems a world apart. Recommended.
L. F.
One of my favourite pubs. Huge selection of rums, beers on draught (Inc gluten free beers), whisky and gin. Friendly and knowledgeable bar staff. Dog friendly.
A. M.
One of the best pubs in Edinburgh for quality real ale, always has 7/8 ales on rotation.
Staff very helpul and knowledgeable. Has a good selection of whiskies but unusually an even better selection of rums.
T. W.
I like this place a lot. Huge selection of beers, and it's a cozy, traditional pub. During the day, there seems to be a lot of room, although it fills up quickly. Staff were really friendly and talked us through all the beers on offer.
Great place!
M. F.
Kind service. Great prices. Comfortable atmosphere. Solid pub.
M. K.
I have had a great experience each time I visited Blue Blazer. Bar staff are very friendly and knowledgeable. They have a decent selection of locally sourced traditional Scottish beers on tap so everyone will find something nice to drink there. I would recommend this pub to everyone visiting Edinburgh.
M. S.
Great relaxing place for a pint midday. Smells a bit of stale beer, a bit dated decor/tables/chair, and it's quite cold in the winter, but super chilled atmosphere, friendly owners who know their stuff, and I keep coming back when I'm in the area.
S. A.
Proper Edinburgh bar with excellent cask ales, and even cider on cask. Gets (too) busy at peak times. But at other times it's a perfect spot to linger and there's always convivial banter going on.
P. H.
Very nice traditional pub with good range of beers and spirits. Slightly off the beaten track but enjoyed the experience in a no frills way. Recommended.
L.
Great pub that actually still feels like a pub, and not somewhere masquerading as one.
Staff are always friendly and the choice of beer is always interesting.
Very cosy in the winter when the fire is on, and pretty cosy generally because of the seating layout.
M. M.
Friendly and rustic bar. Half decent selection of beers, great spirit collection. Wine choice leaves a lot to be desired. Ideal for a pint and catch up with friends
A. W.
Good selection of guest ales, ever changing. Nice range of wine and spirits.
N. M.
Ace pub for beer drinkers, classic Edinburgh pub. Beer is really well served with pride. Legend has it that Sean Connery has been regularly spotted in here during his Edinburgh days. V popular so be prepared for the squeeze and the wait for a fine pint.
B. M.
Looking for an old fashioned Edinburgh bar with some great real ales? Then this is the place to go. Sit back and sup a beer and chill in this old bar. The Beer taps are regularly updated with great selection of local beers. Has a good local feel to it as well.
B. M.
Good range of drinks. Good adherence to Covid guidelines.
S.
I've been here twice. The service is alright and ambience is decent for the prices.
However, the washrooms may be quite wet at times. It's not a huge place, so only good for small groups.
R. K.
Great choice of beer and whisky, an excellent pub.
N. S.
Local pub feel close to the heart of Edinburgh. Two sizeable rooms, a rotating selection of craft ale and a regular £3 pint. Excellent, reliable pub for locals and tourists, groups and couples alike.
R. S.
No complaints. A good range of beers and a friendly crowd.
G. R.
Good traditional pub with many fine guest ales. Good selection rums gins and of course whiskies. Dog friendly. No frills - just a great pub.
R. H.
A reliable and consistent good old-fashioned pub just off Lothian Road the Blue Blazer features a massive range of spirits(especially rum and gin) and a good selection of local cask ales.
It's a small pub but it's intimate and friendly and has a lovely open fire for when the weather gets chilly, acoustic jam sessions in the back room will drift through the pub but never at a volume you'd have to shout over.
V. W.
Good pub, good beer but seems constantly busy.
J. B.
Only stayed for one. Decent selection of beers. Friendly and informative staff. Would recommend. Transient selection of beers.
S. C.
An Edinburgh classic for me - if I was asked to recommend a pub in this part of town this would be the one. It hasn't changed much over the years, but its a cosy wee place - not great for large groups given the limited seating but for 3 or 4 it's great. Specialises in rums and other drinks and the staff will be happy to recommend you something. Toilets are down a fairly steep flight of stairs. Limited food menu - more just wee snacks than for a meal.
S. C.
Great traditional pub
A. A.
A great pub that I would frequent every Friday lunchtime - that was when I lived in Edinburgh and the pace of work was more relaxed. Doubt if they do toasties any more; perhaps a panini. Nonetheless, I visit when I can and would recommend it to anybody who needs their thirst quenched.
M. v.
good selection of rums, very laid back atmosphere and music on the background at a decent level that you can talk to your friends without having to shout. mainly a hang out of locals and students from the area, but good option if you want to just have a drink, a sit and talk!
J. M.
Cosy wet led Scottish pub just off of West Port and in partial view of Edinburgh castle. The pub frequently does tap takeovers with local breweries, recently hosting Barney's Beers from Summer hall.
The cask selection is well curated and the bar also boasts a grand selection of both runs and whisky.
S. M.
A good pub, and a good, quieter alternative to the pubs in the area. The pub has a good selection of cask beers that are reasonably priced. However, the pub does not show live sports so give it a miss if that is what you are after.
S. M.
Amazingly cheap prices £2.50 a pint offer on 2 of the ales. Good beer guide regular . There is potentialy a good ale trail to be developed in this area
M. H.
Charming staff, nice atmosphere.
J. L.
Great pub, great selection of beers at a reasonable price. Nice helpful staff, and a great atmosphere with no TVs or intrusive tunes
G. R.
Love the BB but their wifi is not the best. Slow and sometimes just doesn't connect. Bar staff will often just say that their phone is working and leave it there. They rarely agree to switch off and on though this generally resets it. At least for a while. Shame. As great beer. Don't go as often as I used to.
Stop Press
They turned it off and on and wifi now on. Good.
K. H.
A fantastic pub for lovers of real ale. Several frequently rotated on tap served by friendly and knowledgeable staff. Nothing fancy or flashy but a pub that does what it does extremely well.
L. C.
cosy wee pub, a bit slower paced than the more studenty/dive places around it (and the 'pubic triangle') it's always warm and i've never experienced it as super duper busy so it's a nice place for a quieter night. the wide range of beers/ales also adds plus points.
J. M.
Excellent pub great barman good selection of drink not to dear for Edinburgh
A. E.
One of my favourite pubs in Edinburgh. Good selection of ales and whiskies. Friendly staff and patrons. Nice warm fire for cold nights.
A. W.
One of the few proper locals pubs left in the city centre and welcoming to all. Cosy atmosphere and a decent selection of beers.
G. C.
Good drinks selection. However this is a classic small Edinburgh pub. On a busy day (20+ customers) elbows in.
D. M.
lovely spot with a great beer selection
C. V. B.
Quiet escape from many of the areas busier bars. Though it looks like a utility pub and is near many of Edinburgh's strip clubs, don't let the first impression fool you, it has a surprisingly good selection of beers.
A. F.
Serve some unusual ales. Had a pint of Volcano on visiting last weekend. A very nice pint. A proper, traditional pub and welcoming staff.
W. M.
A classic Edinburgh boozer. If you are looking for a no nonsense pint or a solid single malt then that is what you will get. Comfy seats and an intimate atmosphere, look no further.
D. W.
Really fantastic pub, always an interesting selection on cask, friendly staff and great atmosphere.
P. C.
Great pub but the male bartender was so rude! Refused to serve me 15 mins before closing because "the kettle would take too long to boil"! Rest of the staff are amazing though!
A. R.
Nice beer, whisky of the week, friendly bar staff. Traditional pub but feels current. What's not to like...
C. S.
A very nice pub to add to any pub crawl, but honestly worth spending some time in. The prices are good and it is the kind of bar you could easily spend an enjoyable evening in.
A. B.
Good pub with real ale. Fully recommended
j. w.
Good service, felt safe in this pub.....full brief on covid rules.
Table service and friendly ambience says it all!
N. S.
Great selection of beers and good music on the background. The ambiance is a bit '' rough '' but there is a fire and staff are nice and worth a visit
P. J. P.
Great pub atmosphere, a place where locals go, good variety of beers and whiskey, very friendly service.
G. H.
Very nice Pub! The Barkeeper really knows his job and is very helpful if you are a novice to scottish beer and whiskey like me ;-)
G. M.
Old school boozer. Don't make them like this anymore!
L. G.
Has a student pub charm
R. T.
Nice pub and good selection of beers! Decent bar lady as well! Worth a visit
M. M.
Two words: saffron gin. I always feel a little overwhelmed by the selection when I go to the Blue Blazer. I want to dig in and try everything! Often my orders will be for 2 drinks, to slow down my pace when I'm out with beer drinkers. The saffron gin is heavenly. I can only describe it as 'sort of like paella but in a good way'. It's the only place I've seen that stocks Angoustura 1824 rum, a vintage spiced rum to be sipped neat, which has paved the way for the likes of Sailor Jerry.
It's a really fun place to spend a Sunday afternoon, but can be a bit of a pain to get served on a Friday or Saturday night.
K. H.
The Blue Blazer might be located right on the edge of Edinburgh’s pubic triangle, but this not a fur coat nae knickers kind of pub. With hand pumps galore, a great and lively atmosphere and a good selection of rum make this pub worth venturing into the naughty path of!
M. T.
Nice wee traditional pub. Good selection o beer.
J. M.
One of the two or three best pubs in Edinburgh - amazing selection of rum, gin and whisky + a constantly updated set of beer on tap
