C. S.Charming and chill. We had a nice quiet (albeit late) lunch. We shared a Chicken and Bacon pie (which was lovely and warm on a cold rainy day) and the cask ales were delicious.
Great friendly service too.
The interior decor doesn't entirely match the ancient exterior, but that's not a big deal at all.
R. S. (.My wife and I decided to eat here after a long day of walking around Edinburgh. The atmosphere was very nice and the food was very good. A plate of several smoked fish for my wife and the chef's homemade pie, chicken and mushrooms, hit the spot. An impressive list of beers and other libations awaits your visit. And best of all, nothing felt or looked like you were in a touristy location. I recommend it.
V. M.We went for a bite and a whiskey taste but this guys, The Chili Dogs band, really made my evening. Delicious food and very good whiskey. Friendly staff. Clean toilet. Good vibe.
U. S.My wife had the soup of the day and chicken mushroom pie, I had the Haggis. We enjoyed our lunch very much but the portions were too big. The beer I ordered was a bit stained, probably the last drop of the draft, I should have complained .

Inside is very clean and trendy looking! There is a great selection of classic Scottish pub food, with great beer and drinks to accompany it! My food was brought out very quickly and was delicious.
This is a perfect spot for dinner and drinks if you are in central Edinburgh!

If your on Royal Mile stop in and drink or eat. This pub is family friendly. Not obnoxiously so. But a fine establishment, serving all the above. T. A.Went here for lunch last Saturday. Really slick, professional service from welcoming staff. Food was tasty and in good portions.
Downsides: it is a bit pricey and there were no deals being advertised. The room itself is a bit cold and as seating is limited and there are quite a few large tables if there's only a couple of you you sometimes end up having to sit on the same table as strangers - this spoils the experience a little bit.
If you're looking for some decent food and some decent drinks and are in the old town you could do a LOT worse!
L. C.We had a social event of our walking group in the basement. Excellent service, very good space and good beers, too. They served food downstairs, making our eve nice and easy. I spilled my drink and they replaced it for me without flinching. I really appreciated the friendly staff. We had a wonderful and enjoyable night out there. Would recommend for group of friends.
E. W.I only had a short amount of time in which to grab a bite to eat before a whisky tasting, and this place was nearby. Staff was friendly, seated me quickly, and I had a delicious quick meal (seafood chowder) before my appointment.
Also, a huge plus: water! It seems like such a small thing, but I was parched after a day of museums in which food and drink are frowned upon. The place was warm, quiet, and the beer list looks like it would be worth trying if I had more time.

J. M.Seens to be newer place on the Royal mile compared to the several other pub / restaurants. Brighter interior, several tables for 4's and more as well as a large table in the centre for 8 people.
The food was very good. I had the haggis (when in Rome) and my wife had a chicken dish. Both were very good (the haggis was actually excellent 😁).
Like every place along the mile it was BUSY between 4 and 7 pm. We had to wait @ 10 minutes for a table (which wasn't bad). The server was nice and we had drinks to the table quickly. The meal took time - 40 mins from order. However it was BUSY and when the food arrived it was warm and we enjoyed our dinners.
I found the place nicer than the pubs. No patio tables so I didn't smell smokers (I don't smoke and don't enjoy walking through a cloud of smoke walking past patio tables). Plus the tables where spaced out a little more - made the dinner experience much nicer.
If you are eating lunch / dinner on the Mile, this place is worth the walk down.
V. B.Excellent non touristy meal. Being on the Royal Mile you assume a place is going to be the usual tacky place but this pub/restaurant is really fab. I am vegetarian and still had a good choice of mains which can be rare in pubs. Amazing beer choice with good descriptions for each. The pictures make it look bright and stark but actually on a cold December evening it was cosy and welcoming.
S.Very clean space, service quick, food came out quickly as well. After having to leave several other restaurants/pubs (that couldn't accommodate children or closed the kitchens early), Canon's Gate was able to feed us. However, they also couldn't accommodate kids after 9pm, and we arrived around 7.50p, so we kinda just had to get in, order, get out.
The food was also pretty tasty.
P. C.The beers range from a VERY good 80/- to rather bland lager.
The food is rushed a little, and not really worth the price tag. The tasting plate was very disappointing for 18 pounds.
The staff, however, are really lovely and attentive.
I think it needs to decide if it's a restaurant or a pub, as it is failing to be either at the moment.

L. H.Great, but understaffed when we were there. We were soaked after hiking around Holyrood Park and found a welcome refuge in this little restaurant. Looks like a charming pub inside. Our food all was quite good. I had the Haggis. (I'll try to post a picture.) We enjoyed everything, and the wait staff was charming. Our only complaint was that it was VERY hard to get the attention of the staff. In fact, we ordered desserts after dinner, but they never came after almost an hour and after we had reminded our waiter. They were kind enough to cancel our desserts, and our experience wasn't destroyed by this problem. Fortunately, we didn't mind being there for a very long time since we were drying out!

I. A.Randomly chose this place for some dinner and whiskey tasting. They had a choice of 3 whiskey shots out of 5 brands and some delicious burgers, all for a good price. On top of that they started playing live music, which made the night very enjoyable! I truly recommend this place!
R. N.Nice pub and busy. Good selection of beers and friendly people. There was a bit of music in the evening it was one guy with guitar and he played some good music that had everybody clapping. If you're doing the mile it's a good pub stop.

My wife's burger was a bit undercooked but the staff sorted it and she thoroughly enjoyed her meal. Hand cooked chips are amazing.
Plenty of Scottish fare on offer which is great to see.

C. P.Recent refurbished from an old man bar into a modern gastropub. There is a decent beer selection and the food is respectable, and service was great the first time I went but mixed the second time. Likewise the first time was nice and quiet making for a pleasant eating experience but the second time was very noisy. Got some good attributes but it's going to depend on if you get them on a good night.

Staff have always been polite and quick to serve, so you'll not be disappointed by the service nor by the product on your visit here. If you're reading reviews and working out whether to come, please don't let my review put you off - it's a good place and I will come here on occasion. Being completely honest, I haven't given this more than 3 stars because I stay incredibly close to this pub and I just wish it had some...any... atmosphere. It can't be faulted technically in terms of food and drink, but dammit the place lacks any real character. I really wish this place would get properly redone but I can't see it happening as it gets enough footfall on the Mile. So, sorry guys, can't fully recommend you, but do encourage your business in that you are getting a lot right. In the meantime, however, sorry I'll be keeping my regular custom at Holyrood 9A and The Waverley.

A. A.First meal in Edinburgh! It was amazing! My friend had the best salmon I've ever tasted and I had the wild boar and it was perfect balance. We also had locally brewed beer and cider which went so well and very refreshing.
J. M.Great place! Stopped in after taking part in the torch procession to get some dinner and drink. Had the whisky flight with The Macallan, Bowmore, and Auchentoshen. Have had The Macallan before, but when we asked the staff to surprise us with the other whiskys on the flight, that's what he chose. We were not disappointed. Also had the seafood chowder, which was also excellent and finished with a steak and ale pie, also very delicious. Had a local couple at the table behind us strike up a conversation which led to them joining us at our table and buy us a round while having a great conversation for a couple of hours. Will definitely be coming back. Edinburgh is my home away from home, and it just keeps providing more reasons why.

A. K.Took a pit stop here in the afternoon after we hiked the aurthur’s seat. There was an offer wherein. There were 4 pairs of food with 4 beers. All the beers tasted really good, especially the stout.
A. W.Nice place. Just took a tour of the palace, freezing cold. So wanted somewhere warm. Had the seafood chowder and the wild boar & cranberry terrine. Chowder wasn’t super thick, but lots of stuff inside. The wild boar was like a semi sweet mashed up gelantonous ham dish, that you can cut up and put on the bread they provide. What took me by surprise was the piccalilli, this yellow sauce, WOW, if you like sour wierd tasting stuff. This is it. It’s sour and wierd. Nice place.

B. V.Regularly attend the Monday night improv comedy show here. Always friendly staff, always a good pint or a coffee, and delicious grub, if a little pricey. A great place to chill out on the Mile.

K.Great staff, best food of the whole trip to London and Edinburgh (do not leave without trying their Shepherd's pie!), can't beat prices for Scotch when you are in Scotland and right on the Royal Mile. Does not look old or medieval styled but is very cosy and warm, my daughter and I had a great time there.

There's good seating, TVs are easy to see if you are in for a game and during the festival there is free comedy which is obviously hit and miss but the atmosphere is consistently vibrant and upbeat.

Good selection of real ales however the quality can be questionable. Very popular with tourists and the food is very good.
M. S.The staff and the food are the best thing about this pub. Good selection of drinks, the occasional offer but generally towards the pricier end of the market. Seating is not the comfiest, they would benefit from a couple of sofas. Regular live music and also a function room downstairs which hosts a variety of nights.
z. r.Have to say a big thank you to the Canon's Gait pub on the Royal Mile. I had my party in the downstairs bar and it was brilliant. The staff were great, management really nice and I even got my own real ale on draft!!!!! (big Yay). It was a pleasure to deal with these guys and I highly recommend it as a venue! And they can cater for your do as well. We had a band and it worked really well. A very easy thing to organise and the staff couldn't have been nicer or more helpful.
P. S.Low ceilinged bar with lots of guest ales and really good pub grub. Gets very busy during the Fringe due to a central location on the mile. Try the beer and food pairing. It's fun!

S. W.Oh me gaw. Delicious rotating selection of scottish cask ales and great tasty reasonably priced grub. It's more akin to a Gastropub than a traditional pub IMHO. Tourists may stay away because it does not have that "traditional" feel but who cares since the whole city has that atmosphere. Just take a walk and you'll breathe history in every footstep. This place is a hidden gem despite being located along the Royal Mile. Highly recommended! Slainte Mha!
