Reviews of The Doric
S. W.
Stopped here because it caught my eye as I was walking by. The staff were very inviting and I decided to have the Smoked Salmon to start, with the Sirloin as a main. The salmon was lovely, and portioned perfectly. The sirloin was cooked perfectly, at medium-rare. I'd definitely come again if I ever returned to Edinburgh.
I. B.
Came over to try Fish and Chips mainly thanks to good reviews here. The fish was outstanding! Add fantastic and friendly service to the experience. A definite "must visit" for all future stays in Edinburgh. I may try other options there too.
I'll be back 😊
M. H.
Very nice place with pleasant service.. interesting and good dishes that are a welcome change to general menu choices elsewhere.
If you are a dessert lover, leave some space for their famous sticky toffee pudding...
S. T.
Great experience! The food was delicious, we had the Mushroom Stroganoff, Chicken & Chorizo, Sticky Toffee Pudding and Scottish Cheeses and would order everything again! The staff were very friendly, extremely attentive and made us feel very welcome. We also liked the music ;)
J. D.
Prob best pint of Guinness I've had..an old style of pub but 1 of my must stops before the Rugby....
C. M.
Great staff, haggis was good for the first time ever eating it. Giant piece of fish with chips.
M. B.
Lovely friendly bar with great food from restaurant upstairs. Visited on rugby weekend, Feb 22 great atmosphere with live music. Visiting again end of Feb and have booked for meal.
S.
One of my favourite Historical Pubs in Edinburgh, just at the border of the Old Town, not too big, cozy and with a really kind bartender. Had a meat pie and some soup while sipping the Doric Ale. It's a must for the considerate pub crawler for sure.
G. P.
Just been in for a pre train pint. Very friendly and welcoming bar person. Nice pub (old mirrors etc.) and decent choice of beers. Far superior to station bar and nearby Wetherspoons.
A. R.
Great Scottish food.
Price is ok
S. L.
Had the shepherds pie here which was excellent!
Location is convenient and the staff is talkative and super friendly.
Highly recommended!
a.
Very nice wine and lovely Cullen Skink soup. £30 for the 2 of us so not for you if you are on a budget.
S. l.
Excellent experience! Nice and traditional atmosphere and great food. The mussels and haggis appetizers were delicious, the mains: Lamb dish, prawns and chorizo, fish and chips were wonderful and the service was fast and friendly! Highly recommended 😀
t. l.
No need to wander far from the train station n airport bus stop, or the Royal Mile for that matter, for a real pub, a proper cask ale and a real bowl of Cullen Skink to start things off. Great food and great service in an authentic traditional pub setting. Edinburgh at its finest!
A. W.
Had my last meal of Edinburgh here.
It’s worth the splurge if you want one great meal. That beef was so tender 😩👌
I don’t even like sweets but that Creme brûlée was so good, I could have licked my plate.
B. C.
Really good and tasty food! A good selection of traditional and more exquisite dishes with an amazing selection of beers as well. The service was quite good too and it's located right across the road from the Dungeon as well!
J. D.
Unfortunately we had to leave before even ordering, one of my party became unwell (migraine probably brought on by flashing lights) and we had to jump in a taxi back to the hotel.
The staff were both very understanding & compassionate which was greatly appreciated.
I hope to return one day and enjoy a meal here.
P. O.
Great fast service we didn't book and there was a spare table luckily, this was quite surprising as it was the week before Christmas and very busy in Edinburgh with the Christmas markets. Food was good and the staff were very pleasant
P. D.
Amazing place. Great service from Raymond. Food was lovely. Sunday roast beef was excellent. Highly recommended. Definitely be back soon!
R. R.
Very friendly staff, lovely live music and honestly one of the best chicken burgers I've ever eaten. Cannot recommend enough!
a.
The most amazing pub food I've ever had! The portions were huge and the set up was gorgeous, the service was prompt and efficient. It's very busy every night of the week and only has 10 tables so would strongly recommend to book in advance - also the sticky toffee pudding I ordered was amazing!!! I ate it all before I could get a pic but the potion was HUGE
D. B.
The food here was simply divine!!!! I had the haggis neeps n tatties and the cheese board as a desert... I will when in edinburgh return to this pub restaurant.. the staff were really friendly and nothing was too much trouble.. some great beers on offer too.
c.
I have been to the Doric some times. I think one fo the best places in Edinburgh to taste scottish food. Meals are well rpepared and flavoursome, Meat is tender and you can try altarnative dishes like ships with Truffle oil
W. M.
Fantastic place. Food was excellent and our waiter from New Zealand (I think) was so friendly and helpful. The reason I only gave 4 stars was the staircase up to the restaurant wasn't very inviting. Bit dirty and dingy looking. But would definitely return.
S. S. (.
Great restaurant, always pleased with the quality of food and service. It's best to book in advance just Incase they are hosting an event.
B. G.
Live music, great local cuisine, and cold beer on tap. My husband and I were instructed to get the haggis here. We were nothing but happy with all aspects of the evening we spent here. It's very good, and authentic. The staff are accommodating, and attentive, and the food is delicious!
A.
Not very special, good opportunity to stay for a short dinner. The pub downstairs is small and nice.
S. W.
All around great place, definitely recommend! Good food, good atmosphere and the staff was very friendly!
G. W.
Best pub in town with a cosy, friendly and authentic Scottish atmosphere. The food is excellent and the service is very good indeed, especially from the lovely lady with the red hair! Also on Fridays and Saturdays they have live folk music which is just wonderful. Highly recommend for visitors and locals alike.
R.
Had the most succulent fish here! The portions were big and the food was of a high standard. Good food done well.
P. W.
Nice haggis, lots of pepper. Staff is very friendly. Premise is big enough, feels genuine and well trodden.
G. Z.
We just randomly visited the place for a quick dessert - one of the best sticky toffee puddings l've ever had! Kind service, nice menu, seems to be a perfect choice for traditional food. It is 'the oldest gastro-pub' in town, from the 17th century...
D. Z.
Very good service, tasty local food and great location. One of the best in Edinburgh. Highly recommended to order Haggis and Fraoch beer.
M. T.
Superb place when it comes to food, staff and interior layout. We came here and tried their haggis and it was great. If you are nearby and love haggis, this is the place for you!
S. O. S.
Absolutely delicious tried this Scottish dish haggis for my first time so nice quite surprised how quiet this place was fantastic place to eat please go
M. W.
Very friendly and helpful staff. Delicious home cooked traditional Scottish food.
The ice cream and sticky toffee pudding are absolutely top notch.
M. E.
Had a brilliant evening with some old friends here last night. A busy Saturday afternoon and evening and the staff were very good at making everyone feel welcome and looked after. They were actively going round clearing glasses and making table service the easiest option for the customers and in the COVID times we live in, it was very noticeable that they were trying to keep everyone as safe as possible while keeping a great atmosphere bubbling along.
There's a great selection of draft booze, a fine selection of wines and spirits to please any palate from bog standard drinker up to the connoisseur...providing you remember you're in a great pub with no particular dibs on itself...well worth a visit.
R. D.
Awesome food ! The place is great, the waiters are very friendly.
C. H.
Outstanding food and service. Fresh food and locally sourced. If you like authentic chips there is no better place. Great to have proper vegetarian options too. Can recommend as one of the best.
J. P.
Great food and great service from the staff! I had their Cullen Skink soup, and Haggis, Neeps and Tatties, I just loved it.
J. B. W.
Great Salmon, Haggis and neeps. Great service by Lass who served me and mam. Will definitely go back to try Sunday lunch and sticky toffee pudding. Mmm yummy.
A. K.
Very nice pub near Edinburgh train station. Try the haggis bon-bon, it’s delicious. Their fish & chips is one of the best! Friendly staff!
D. A.
Lovely meal upstairs with friendly staff . Popped in last Wednesday for a Guinness which was first class and back on the Thursday for a meal with family .
Good value too , I’ll be back sooner rather than later .
M. G.
Great gastro pub in the heart of Edinburgh. We had dinner here and the food was good quality.
P. M.
Decent little pub right behind the station so handy for a quick one before your train. Good whisky selection and original decor
B. C.
After searching for "Shepard's pie" this was the restaurant that appeared. And it was the right one. The Shepard's pie was fantastic. And the chocolate almond torte delicious
S. B.
Really delicious food, great service. Would highly recommend for quality pub grub
B. T.
Delicious haggis, excellent staff, reasonable prices, nice atmosphere. Staff were very gracious when a time constraint came up and served me very quickly.
M.
Went here specially for the fish and chips. Fresh fluffy crispy fish and homemade tasting chips. Highly recommended!
J. N.
Had a very nice dinner with friends here. My first time eating haggis and I really enjoyed it!
A. S.
Fish&chips here are on point 👌🏼And it's huuuge.
Nice place, pretty central. Good for lunch.
E. C.
Really enjoyed most of the food here, had the Haggis bon-bons for starter, shephards pie for main which were both fantastic, the cheese board at the end let it down slightly but I had good reports about the sticky toffee pudding was really great.
V. T.
Amazing food, very good service. Lager was really nice and they have an extensive whiskey selection. We had the wild mushrooms, soup of the day with homemade bread(very good), the haggis, which were very tasty, and the lentil pie- also great! The desserts we tried were sticky toffee pudding and cheesecake both of which are amazing. The atmosphere is cosy, authentic and homely. A lovely experience overall.
A. L.
Excellent food, went the tourist route with the starter and mains of course but really tasty. Good service from the staff and good beer on offer. Would I go back, yes i would
r. c.
Chorizo and prawn linguini is amazing👌 and the staff is great 🙌
A. O.
Dropped in for a swift beer before the train and enjoyed the experience. A good selection of beers and whiskies it had been a long time since I had an Old Speckled Hen. Good service with a nice atmosphere.
B. G.
Good old pub. Worth a visit with live music adding character
M. R.
The most delicious food in Edinburgh, friendly staff and great atmosphere! We ordered cullen skink as a starter and it was just perfect! Definitelly worth trying!
M. R.
Friendly staff, good atmosphere, great food and a nice selection of drinks. Helpfully located near the station, which is a definite plus, and stocks Thistly Croft cider that's another plus!
J. S.
Great place to eat, but be sure to make a reservation. Some great desserts as well.
E. D.
Great little bar downstairs. Tasty selection of scotches and beer. We wandered into here looking for live music a couple of months ago (apparently every Friday and Saturday here) and were amazed with a little 4 person band around the barrel in the center playing traditional (and funny) songs. We stop here every time we come to Edinburgh now. Very convenient to the train station.
T. H.
Nice wee place for an after work drink, before the train.
A. W.
Very friendly, super food, very nice
G. A.
Nice Sunday roast, meat, Yorkshire pudding and roasted potatoes with root vegetables. Friendly setting upstairs.
A. P.
Best little place .food was good and had the best night down stairs in the bar 🤗
T. B.
Excellent bar downstairs and lovely quiet restaurant upstairs. Great service, food was good, beer was good, whisky was good. Also do a malt of the month (or was it week?) which is discounted. I'm just travelling through Edinburgh and almost stopped in the spoons as it was convenient - glad I poked my head through the door!
N. S.
An absolutely wonderful meal in a restaurant with so much character. I had the chicken dish and a delightful pudding. Staff and service were fantastic. The bar downstairs is also a lovely place to step in for a quick drink. Can be busy so I would advise booking first.
L. C.
Our meals were very good and we had a nice time in this historical eatery. We loved the atmosphere with uneven floors and mix-matched chairs. The absolute best part was the sticky pudding... my mouth is literally watering as I type this.
I. L.
Awesome place, I came here after reading an NYT review and it did not disappoint. Great haggis and it arrived promptly. Very authentic feel and nice wooden interior. Staring out the window at the weird attraction across the street was not fun though I accept you can't always pick your neighbors.
R. D.
Of course I had the fish and chips. Delicious. Haddock rather than cod, just as I prefer. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal. It was a very hot day so we sat in the back dining room which was a bit cooler than the front bar area. I'll be back!
c. e. g.
Popped in for a nightcap and caught last 20 mins of the England match. .great place..really freindly barman..my mate had a perfect whisky ,i had a perfect cider and it was a perfect end to the day....find this place and visit !
A. R.
A perfect little Scottish pub, with an old-time interior which is cozy and yet spacious.
It not only offers the great selection of whiskies, ales, and world beers which one would expect, but combined with (on our Friday night visit at least) some of the best live foot stomping traditional Scottish music I have heard.
Amazing atmosphere, delicious beer, soul stirring live music. I would heartily recommend a visit if you are in the vicinity.
N. L.
The best stake eaten in Edinburgh! Lovely atmosphere in this cozy little pub! 👍
H. R.
Really good food and great service. Very attentive and accommodating. I would even say the food is underpriced for the quality it was.
F.
It was okay, wouldn't go back. Toilets were disgusting.
K. S.
Very good quality fresh fish and tasty meat. Go for the mussels!
E. O. b.
Great pub fabulous food. A 'go to' every time
K. G.
This is one of my reliable restaurants when I'm in edinburgh, the food is good and includes some traditional Scottish options. I like the atmosphere and have brought various people with me over the years.
The staff are lovely and will help with any questions you have, and have recommended a beer to go with the food ordered, which is a lovely touch.
T.
Firstly the setting was just superb with delicate lighting and candles in cut glass whiskey tumblers. The staff were all heloful, polite, helpful and professional. The food was out of this world, cooked to perfection and fresh. If ever I am here again this will be the place for me. Beautiful wine and just to finish great value for money.
Thank you
s. a.
Went there with my friends when visiting Edinburgh last weekend. Real Scottish experience. Good traditional food, very pleasant atmosphere and despite lacking few things from the menu special thanks for Lucas who made this evening very enjoyable!
F. I.
Great food and atmosphere. Very friendly and polite staff.
H. S.
Great live music on the weekends and nice beer in the pub (ground floor). The guests are all right, too. Even when you go there on your own (as a woman), you can enjoy a relaxed evening.
If only the restaurant (1st floor) would put cheese maccharoni on their menu for vegetarians ;-).
J. H.
Amazing food, staff so attentive, proper historical Edinburgh!
J. F.
Had a lovely meal with friendly service and the food was hot which is always good
Would definitely recommend.
J. C.
Great lunch in this historic gastro pub and restaurant. Basic menu has all the Scottish favourites - haggis, Cullen Skink and magnificent fish and chips. Good choice of wines and beers. Well worth a visit!
R. S.
The food was really lovely. This was my first trip to Scotland and if I ever come back, I'm going to go to The Doric again.
J. S.
Went here for lunch. The staff were welcoming. Fish and chips was good. Sheppard’s pie was a bit underseasoned and a little on the small side but the side of veggies was fresh and delicious. Service was prompt and professional. Would possibly return next time I come to Edinburgh but wouldn’t recommend the sheppard’s pie.
A. G.
We had a wonderful lunch, we were a group of blind and visually impaired people and the staff looked after us very well even though we were a little demanding. The food was very good. We were planning a trip to the Edinburgh Dungeons and it was directly across the street could not have been better for us.
Thank You
M. W.
fantastic friendly service and brilliant delicious food, the Sunday roast dinner is highly recommended, reasonable pricing for the quality you receive.
D. Z.
Good service and really good food.
I. M.
Wonderful atmosphere, lovely staff at a traditional Edinburgh pub!
A. F.
This was our first stop in Edinburgh, and the first time I ever had haggis. I wish I could eat here every week; the food was amazing. Service was decent, beers were delicious, but the food is what I'd come back for.
C. J.
Probably the best place we ate while in Edinburgh! We went in for a light bite and had a starter each. I had mussels and there was a very healthy portion! My friend had the mushroom ravioli which looked delicious and she said it was better than the starter that she'd had at The Witchery! To top it off, the service was excellent! Super friendly and courteous as well as swift. Will definitely return
G. J.
Just popped in for a drink before going up to the castle. Friendly staff. Clean premises. Great selection of beers to chose from. Will pop in again when I return to Edinburgh.
D. M.
Amazing atmosphere in this wee bar in the City Centre. It’s very near Waverley train station so good for a quick pint before or after you travel or for meeting people after getting the train. Drinks are reasonable priced given that it caters for a lot of tourists being so central.
They often have live music at the weekends and as it is quite a small pub it can be a really good atmosphere at these times. The tables are close together so a great place for chatting to randoms sitting next to you.
They have local craft beers available and an excellent selection of bottled beers from around the world. Whisky selection is very good as well.
I think there’s a restaurant joined on to it but I’ve never been and I would advise booking ahead if you’re wanting to go as the place is always busy due to its location. Although I did see some impressive looking pies getting handed out from the bar that looked amazing.
S. D.
Lovely old interior and outstanding customer service. The food is gorgeous. I had the muscles and lamb shank with both were cooked to perfection. Love the wine sauce with the muscles.
Thoroughly recommend!
S. R.
Good food & drink with live music & a good atmosphere.
F. R.
We're a group from Singapore and Australia, we tried Haggis for the first time (it was wonderfully spiced and whisky sauce was amazing. Flavour of spices in the Haggis reminded me of an Indian dish), Fish & Chips, and desserts were amazing too. Coffee was not good.
G. R.
Visiting both the bar on the ground floor for 2 hours before heading upstairs to the restaurant. (Friday 28th Dec)
The decor of both the bar and restaurant is as I remember it as a student in the 80's, traditional, classic, perfect.
The service in the bar was challenging it is understaffed (everyone wants to work upstairs) there's always a queue, we watched small groups walk in wait 5 minutes and walk out again knowing it was going to take too long to get served. One group of gents commented additionally that they didn't recognise any of the beer being served... a bit weird considering I was drinking Guiness. However it has to be said it does favour the uncommon, not typical selection of lagers and IPAs... I had Tennents with my meal...
Clientele were both local and visitors.
The restaurant upstairs is great, the service superb. Although children are not allowed in the bar there was a crying baby upstairs that thankfully left 10 minutes into our arriving.
I had ribs to start, the sauce was dominated by tomatoe puré, the meat amazing, the sauce not so much.
For main, I had the Doric Curry, again the pork meat was superb, the sauce was a bit odd, coconut and pineapple... which clearly I was expecting just not the flavour. It came with perfectly cooked, steamed rice.
I declined the sweet (too much Guiness downstairs) and went for the espresso.
Great service, good value. I would go again purely based on the great service upstairs.
E. B.
Just finished meal. Could not fault anything. We had langoustines and prawns with spicy chorizo followed by sea bass and fish and chips. Batter on fish lovely and crispy. Meal hot and lovely staff. Would come back if visiting Edinburgh
I. W.
A lovely little oasis. Downstairs bar a pleasant place to enjoy a pint of real ale, or food from the Bistro one floor above. Only two mins from Waverley Station. Live music at weekend. May it remain the gem it is.
S. M.
Don't expect luxury, but love this bar for a last pint or 3.
T. M.
Delicious Scottish food, great service. Jonathan was our server -- he gave great recommendations and was very friendly. Would highly recommend this to any other Americans traveling through Edinburgh!
N. L.
They coped well with a big group. Service of food drink was good even though the place was full. It's pub grub to high standard. Said to be oldest gastro pub in Edinburgh.
P. B.
Nice setting with good homemade fayre. Try the whisky tasters and great British food choices, tasty and freshly cooked. Wonderful, friendly and helpful staff in a great atmosphere above the pub.
T. H.
The place looks à bit dodgy but I guess most places do in edinburgh. The floor and stairs were a bit sticky, but the food was great and that is what matters. Also the service was great, they brought also some pencils for drawing for the kids. At the end an unexpected good evening we passed there.
S. H.
We eat out each week as we are working away from home.
Have to say one of the most amazing meals and wine for the price. Staff were very helpful. One of the nicest meals we have had in a long time. 👍👍👍
A. D.
Wondering old town Edinburgh for a lunch spot with my mom, a kind gentleman approached us with a flyer for The Doric. Normally, I would not believe that could result in a fantastic meal, but we were game. So glad we were. Best mussels I have ever had. The sole melted in my mouth. Mom had lentil carrot soup which was delicious and a lamb rump that did not disappoint. Our server, Aaron, was fun and attentive. The oldest Gastropub in Edinburgh has all the charm you would expect. If you have a chance, check out The Doric.
a. s.
Nice fresh food but very skimpy on vegetables with the meals.shame as meals are tasty.
A. K.
Nice place. The fish and chips was too greasy though and the dish could have tasted of more. Delicious sticky toffee pudding! Good, friendly service.
O. S.
The food was excellent, I had an amazing shepherds pie. The service was fast and very pleasant.
Although its also a pub downstairs, the upstairs does not feel like one... I Really recommend this place
K. P.
Fantastic service, friendly staff. Really great food made from fresh. Good gf options. Lovely bar and restaurant. Highly recommend.
M. K.
Beer was ok.. Doric IPA was very good. Hospitality was welcoming. Did not get to try the food but I'm sure it would have tempted and been good. Great place to meet friends.
B. F.
Possibly the best fish and chips I've ever had in a (gastro) pub! Will definitely go back. The Sunday roast menu that was on the blackboard sounds excellent value, so likely back for that soon!
E. S.
To be honest was really surprised with how I ended up here, but was happy with my experience. Cliche as it may sound but this is an awesome gastro pub. Actually this is one of the oldest pub in Edinburgh. I had the best venison ever for main and had salmon carpaccio for starter and a good wine on the side. Had a yummy sticky pudding for dessert too. Good service and atmosphere and was even able to charge my phone and camera
M. S.
Nice, traditional pub fare close to the station. We came for a late lunch on Sunday and the dining room was still crowded! Seemed like a popular spot for both tourists and locals, with a few of our fellow diners lingering a while. The menu offers haggis for those who are brave, and sunday roast on sundays. I ordered the vegetable gratin, which was a healthy mix of sweet potato, butternut squash, amd halloumi with quinoa. Our server was incredibly friendly and attentive, and when we ordered sticky toffee pudding to share she brought it out on two dishes! Only (small) negative was a lack of many vegetarian options and slightly sticky tables
P. G.
Best Shaffer's pie and sole ever.
G. M.
Went for the Sunday Roast....beef nice..Yorkshire and tatties burnt...not enough veg...nice sticky pudding..only tiny scoop of ice cream....very average...
A. M.
Brilliant service and the food was bang on
y. s.
My partner and I have really enjoy eating at the Doric today. I ordered Haggis bon bons and was unsure about the taste. The staff explained how they were made and commented on the popularity of this starter. They tasted delicious and I would recommend this starter for those who have not tasted haggis before. The main courses were also very filling and the portions were more on the large size. The staff were friendly and cleary paid attention to booking details as my partner had put her reason for wanting to book, it was my birthday. We had finished our meal and the staff presented me with ice cream topped with a candle. What a pleasent surprise.
Thank you.
I.
First time at this place had some drinks fairly priced. Had food was fantastic great price huge portions loved it. Would definitely go back.
C. J.
Absolutely love this place and make it a must stop every time in Edinburgh. The Cullen skink soup is great and the lunch and dinner specials always hit the mark. I posted pics of the fish and chips lunch, was more high end than your typical spot and you can see the dungeon across the street from the window. Restaurant upstairs and Doric pub downstairs.
p. b.
Lovely food. Fantastic service. Friendly staff
Recommend
J. T.
The food was really good, their burger is huge and very tasty. Limited vegetarian options though and the decor could do with a refresh.
Friendly staff and popular with locals.
P. D.
An olde worlde place so handily located for Princes Street and Waverley Station, with lovely atmosphere, excellent food and great beer. The staff members are interesting and friendly, and I love taking visiting friends and family there.
J. L.
Lovely little pub, I loved all the decor. Highly recommended
G. M.
Squeezed us in at short notice for lunch.
Food and service superb.
Highly recommended
D. J.
My favourite pub in Edinburgh.
Y. H.
The waiter was super nice and the food was as good as the reviews said. We had haggis and shepherd's pie. It has a beautiful wooden inside.
A. Y. (.
Its a historic and popular pub in the city, so made a reservation for dinner but it seemed the pop in folks actually got better seats. Food was a little pricey but it came in good quantity. The taste was fine but not sure if I would go again.
D. J.
Loved this gastropub for a beer and excellent local menu meal.
N. F.
A real ale pub serving great beer downstairs, with a restaurant upstairs serving fabulous good.
B. M.
Quite nice, informal old smelly pub (but nice) with a pub restaurant upstairs. Feels pretty old and authentic. Food was decent, nothing spectacular but prices between 10/20 quid a main it's a good low key option.
P. S.
Charming, historical pub on the way up to the old town. Quintessential Edinburgh bar. Lots of dark wood and low light. Definitely worth a visit to immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the city
m. a.
Amazing service. Food was really tasty Massive effort went into kids food also. Quick and good quality. We all enjoyed our experience in the lovely quirky restaurant.
D.
Very nice food. Friendly atmosphere and staff.
H. H.
Cozy and authentic !
Discovered it when I first visited Edinburgh and coming back each time since.
D. L.
Popped in for a cheeky pint after a business meeting. Really nice little place. Relatively good selection of drinks and friendly staff. Limited seating but very quaint place
D. C.
Never disappoints. Good food, good service, very central. Probably needs a makeover but that shouldn't change its core strengths. Great place!
B. Z.
I have been to the Doric a couple of times and the staff seems very nice and the food very well prepared. The price is not too bad and it is a nice and central place to eat in Edinburgh it seems. It is close to the central station which makes it good for commuters.
K. B.
Great wee bar with great music
S. A.
Great little bar - good draft and bottled beer selection (Deuchars, Stewart Hollyrood, Belhaven something and Edinburgh Castle on draft on our visit), superb range of whiskies. But it's the enormous art nouveau (?) ceiling lights and the dinky narrow tables (a convenient mid-air shelf really) that give this place a unique air. Near Edinburgh Waverley, this is a perfect spot to wait for the next train home, or the next one, or the one after that ...
L.
Super friendly, dirty litte bar.
J. W.
Classic sort of pub with a nice relaxed atmosphere and a traditional menu and decent enough execution of Scottish slanting pub grub. Tips: buy fresh bread in, cream your mash potato!
D. K.
Good beer selection, decent pub, but food very disappointing. Dry bland burger, rubbery tasteless crayfish linguini. Sad. Staff were very friendly and helpful, just a shame about the food.
D. D.
Ate here first night in Edinburgh. Fish and chips were one the best we found. Service was excellent and choices were plentiful. Highly recommend
l. l.
Must try the traditional soup. It was really good. Overall the food was good, I didn't try haggis but the other two dishes I ordered, shepherds pie and fish and chips are good
T. B.
Amazing food. The service is great but it does take some time to get your food...but it's worth it. The steak and haggis balls are amazing!
C. B.
Great atmosphere, great selection of malts, and the evenings live music was fantastic. And as for the food, outstanding! If ur in Edinburgh u must visit the Doric. 😊😋🍻🍷🎻🎶🎸 topped our weekend!
S. G.
Great food with the best Haggis Ive had and a good selection of tap beers. But they could be sharper on service (not forgetting to check in)
C. G.
Good service and a decent Guinness. Well decorated but how much is genuine.
R. K.
Always good place to visit if you're thirsty and if you want to enjoy some live authentic folk music.
K. M. (.
Traditional pub strong on friendly atmosphere and good range of beers. Easy access for Waverley Station. Impromtu wee music session on last visit.
M. N.
Steady pub some times great some times average expect to pay city centre prices over a tenner for two drinks, tonight for the first time was stinking of drains!
J.
Really good traditional & fresh preparations. Had several appetizers, all were quite good. Nice pub at ground level.
D. G.
Excellent food with well-paced service. Friendly and efficient staff who look out for your specific needs. Historic building with tons of charm.
S. C.
Fantastic food and great service, I’d definitely make a point of coming here again next time I’m in Edinburgh.
J. J.
We had a great experience here.
Friendly staff. One of the plates we shared and the kitchen went to the trouble of making two separate portions.
G. H.
Very welcoming place staff were lovely if ever in Edinburgh again will call in
M. T.
We've been a bit anxious that the sticky toffee pudding is named "the famous sticky toffee pudding" but it has earned the name. Best one I ever had.
Ö. T.

Nice pub downstairs and nice food upstairs with a local bias. About 10 beers on draught including 4 on hand pumps. The range of whiskies is OK too.
T. B.
Great food. Sticky Toffee pudding was amazing!

Nothing wrong here. Food,
Service, Location, Place = all perfect.
Wine might be the weakest link but hey, you're in Scotland so please go for beeeeers (and they're good anyway)
J. H.

S. M.

Everyone associates drinking before getting on a train at Waverley station with the Balmoral Hotel, which keeps its clock three minutes fast to help late travellers. I prefer The Doric, Edinburgh’s self-proclaimed oldest gastro pub.
Doric is Scotland pertains less to columns than to a dialect spoken in Aberdeenshire. The Doric is so named due to all the seventeenth-century Aberdonians visiting Edinburgh that stopped off here, and presumably talked to each other in their home accent (as opposed to a home counties pan loaf accent). And this has transformed since the 1600s into a bar and bistro.
To be honest, the food upstairs in the bistro is nice, but not that special (and plastic menus with scuffed edges and “cullen skin” (sic) are not my favourite). (Although The List likes the cullen skink.) What I like about The Doric is its downstairs bar.
Narrow bolted tables with banquettes and stools, real Edinburgh beers and ciders to drink, a selection of pies to snack on. Old pub mirrors all over the wall. And stumbling distance to Waverley station for train catching purposes. I drank Thistly Cross Traditional cider – a tasty and refreshing cider made in Dunbar, near Edinburgh.
There are annoyances – fellow travellers and all their luggage, two televisions in the bar tuned to different channels, and its quite popular for office parties – but The Doric remains my favourite hidey-hole before heading off on adventures.
J. L.
If you are some tasty food then come here. If you are after some traditional Scottish food come here! If you are just after a quick beer on the way home from work come here. Essentially use any excuse and come to the Doric!
W. C.
