Reviews of The Fountain
Ζ. Ρ.
Wonderful place to eat and drink, very polite and pleasant staff, special food, a lot of wines, beers and cocktail and and and.... i highly recommend it👏👏😊😊
K. J.
Nice interior and staff were friendly. Menu wasn't extensive but the food was really tasty and well cooked. I had beef pie and chips which came with fresh veg. Definitely worth a visit.
R. T.
Great food, a decent range of GF options (not much on the menu but most dishes can be modified), well-spaced and not crowded/noisy even when full. Very dog-friendly! Cosy seating and a relaxed vibe. Reservation essential for busy times.
J. G.
Lovely bar and restaurant, dig friendly, child friendly till early evening so handy for families wanting food and drink after visit to Cineworld opposite. Great quiz night too
J. Ó. R.
Good music, good staff, good Guinness and good whiskey. The food is good too. Highly recommended
s. F.
incredible staff who cared for us and that we enjoyed the food
outstanding food that has never disappointed and always been delicious
out of this world incredible cookies and cream cheesecake
P. A.
Nice pub, friendly staff and very accommodating with dietary requirements.
V. M.
Nice place with friendly staff always ready to help you with everything you need. The food is fresh and delicious. The menu has only few choices but everything is good and cooked properly. For lunch was a little slower but for dinner I really appreciate the atmosphere and the tables outside especially these hot days. Closed to the cinema it’s good also to drink something before the movie!
J. M.
This place has a great ambience, with nice seating, a great drink selection between beers, wines and cocktails but the staff here are particularly good and its great to see the company retained some of them over the lockdowns. It's great to have the pub open again in the area.
The food has always been good here and looking forward to trying the new menu - gutted they stopped doing the Korean chicken wings with the burnt limes, bring them back!
J. H.
1st visit. Would go back but maybe not on a Fri night as quite busy. Staff were excellent. Food average but it has a good vibe to the place.
M. S.
Delicious food and good service in a cosy environment. The beer selection could be more varied, and the menu needs more than one gluten-free option!
g.
Booked a table for family. And the place was great. It’s rare to find a place that offers baby change products for free. That was the cherry in the cake
D. M.
Pub grub done to decent standard. Beer was good. Dessert was nice too.
J. M.
A really nice pub for dining. Great food, service and modern but cosy atmosphere. The steak and ale pie was in an achet dish and very rich and delicious. A few craft beers on tap and the Chew Chew milk stout was delicious. Service was excellent. An ice pack was given to Murray for bumping his head on the table.
M. S.
Very nice place and good food. Friendly staff and dog friendly place.
K. H.
Had been in a few times before for drinks so was looking forward to trying out their food, unfortunately was a little underwhelmed by their Scottish breakfast. Bacon and tattie scone were both overcooked and the toast was very bland and too crispy. Staff were very friendly and there was a good selection of drinks available.
A.
Gets very busy but lovely staff, good drinks and tasty food.
L. G.
Wow food really good and they sell COLD TOWN Beer and I can recommend the IPA. I remember this place from years ago. What,a transformation. Staff friendly and attentative. Wee gem I think.
D. J.
Excellent, great staff, very welcoming and dog friendly, great food too
T. B.
Good vegan burger!
O. K.
Really cosy place with good ambience :). I like the coffee! Btw. dogs are allowed.
A. M.
Very cozy, great for groups and after match drinks.
Food looks good too, big range of beers and spirits
I. M.
Great place with amazing food and good service ! And ohhhh beer was really really good!!! Recommend
K.
It's a lovely aesthetic and has great prices on the food and drink. I got the £7 fish and chips and a glass of white to go with it and it was the perfect amount of food for me. The staff is all very friendly, the interior is immaculately clean, and the food was delicious. Would definitely recommend for the traveller!
D. D.
Good drinks and friendly amazing staff
B. B.
Good music, good atmosphere, friendly staff.
P. T. R.
Great service, we went in for a light lunch and the staff accommodated my 8-month old nephew without batting an eyelid. In return he was very well behaved and not shy in dishing out the smiles. Would definitely recommend.
G. B.
Love the food here and the service is always great!
M. C.
The staff here are great, fun, friendly and ever so helpful and welcoming. Really tasty food and great place to have a bite to eat before going to the Cineworld directly across the road. Love that there is a 15% discount on food and drink with the Cineworld Unlimited card. Awesome coffee too.
G. S.
Very friendly place to eat and drink. A very dog friendly pub. Food was first class.
L. S.
A complete transformation from its previous incarnation - a very pleasant, bright pub. Friendly staff, with a good selection of beers and wines.
Great for lunch or an after work glass of wine, with charcuterie, which is likely to turn into more than one! Sunday roast is also pretty spectacular and has a good kids menu.
N. M.
Great food, friendly staff, lovely atmosphere. Though not loads of veggie options, those they do have are phenomenal! The gnocchi is amazing, the burgers were also incredible, recommend highly!
C. S.
Honestly one of my favourite bars in Edinburgh. It's big, it's airy, it serves delicious food (table and bar) and it's beer selection is always on point.
I've never seen a longer shelf of bottles behind the bar than I have here. And they always have the newspapers if you want them. It caters to all the demographics. Family friendly to first date to quiet getaway to impress your friends. The bar is long. The tables are big. The chairs are comfy. The staff are nice (underline that).
Happily take out of towners here. Happily take significant others here, prospective or not. Happily take myself here.
All round good show.
Now where's my free pint.
L.
Was here late morning on a weekday so quite quiet, but a lovely and inviting space for a coffee. Lots of room and characterised by its decor. A fantastic place to kill time if you're waiting for dinner or a film as it's right across the road from Fountain Park. Very nice hot chocolate.
D. L. (.
This place is great. We had the meat pie and fish & chips and haggis bonbons. All this was totally awesome. Also friendly staff.
BUT, we also had the blackened chicken. Blackened it was not (nor any hint of blackness). Harissa was supposed to meet us, but spicy there was not. Disappointing this one was. And so only four stars.
E. T.
A really good, quality local bar for the fountain bridge area. It has been revamped in the past year or so and has quickly become popular. The drinks selection is good and service is quick. The atmosphere is light, sociable and friendly. Good for any occasion.
N. F.
When The Fountain was bought and given a make-over a couple of years ago, it was a blessing. This is now grown to be a great local bar providing a fantastic range of drinks and some brilliant food.
The bar is beautifully designed and feels contemporary and warm. There is a small area for those wanting more of a restaurant feel but food is served throughout and the tables in the bar area are just as comfortable. There is a strong core menu that changes seasonally as well as daily specials. I recommend visiting on a Sunday when they have their roast dinners including the best roast lamb I have had in the city!
The only downfalls are that drinks can be fairly pricey but that is often the case in Edinburgh, and on Friday/Saturday nights it can get very busy. However, the atmosphere is always good and this is a great bar to go for food and drinks with friends.
O. R.
Awesome place. I had the fish and chips, it was excellent. The beer is good and the staff is very friendly. We had just walked a mile in the rain and our server gave us a blanket when we sat down!
A. D.
I went here for work with a colleague and with both had the steak which was very tasty. They were very friendly on the phone when I called to book and our waitress was a natural and very friendly. Took a while to pay the bill which was my only negative.
R. H.
A great addition to the somewhat limited offering of pubs in the area the Fountain is light and open with a good selection of guest ales and an interesting selection of spirits. The staff are pleasantly relaxed and unobtrusive. It gets busy on a nice evening so get in early, the outdoor area is a suntrap that is really well suited to a good gin and tonic
E.
A great wee bar with a good atmosphere. The staff we're amazing when dealing with my mum's ceiliac needs, she was blown away with the care and thought they showed.
We'll definitely be back.
M. T.
Delicious choice of drink and food, also the lighting, decor and layout are all well thought out but what i most like about this place is the feeling of calm. It reminds me of the Elephant House 20 years ago in that sense. Will recommend to all my airbnb guests.
B. M.
Love it this is my new go to restaurant in edinburgh. Went for the first time and had a great time, the atmosphere was great. The worst thing was that i found it hard to pick what to eat. Everything on the menu sounded new, unique, or just super tasty. Not only was the food delicious but the their selection of beers was fantastic as well, all this made for a great night out.
D. M.
A very homely gastro pub at very reasonable prices. Menu had a bit of thought into it too so it was a better standard of meals than the usual food you see in pubs. Drinks selection is awesome though and worth going for. Always looks busy when pass and it was a great atmosphere when we were there as it was full with customers again. Service was good and food was quite tasty. Great place to go before/after visiting cinema.
G. M.
Good place to hang out. They have a good choice of beers, although I wouldn’t ask for an Aperol Spritz (maybe was just the fact that they are not used to making it, I’m just stating my experience here).
They offer student discount and they have activities such as pub quizzes.
If you’re a group of friends, you definitely wanna go there.
D. M.
The Fountain is a great addition to this area of the city, and it's transformation from old-man's pub to upmarket wine bar has been great! They have a quirky decor, think shoesmiths' lathes and old filing cabinets filled with plants! Their drink selection is vast, and their food is good. Definitely worth a visit if you're passing.
R. O.
Very nice place! Friendly staff, good selection of drinks (even bavarian beer!) and overall a nice ambience. Will definitely come back! Also great for a drink after the movies!
A. J.
Brilliant child friendly pub. Warm welcome when we went in with our granddaughters for lunch, bringing things for them to whilst waiting for food which was also good. Relaxing ambience and plenty of room to put pushchair.
R. G. S.
Great food. All perfect in a Sunday breakfast
C.
A fantastic little bar / restaurant with friendly staff, a great selection of beers and outstanding food (the steak pie and chips is out of this world and a real belly filler!) - the perfect start to an evening before heading across the road for a movie!
D. H.
My new favourite pub in Edinburgh! Outside and in everything just fits, feels very comfortable and serves astonishingly good food! Had a roast chicken dinner out of there a week ago, one of the best things I've ever eaten!
S. M.
Really fresh, served hot, beautiful food from a nice menu. The staff treats you like they care, like you are the customer. That is getting to be rare. I would give 6 stars if I could.
g. m.
Great musuc.. and beers.. food is great too..
R. W.
A great bar but food was under seasoned. Gnocchi was especially disappointing. Huge pile of spinach leaves with gloopy garlic dressing, cherry tomatoes and deep fried mashed potato gnocchi.
C. T.
Good service and AMAZING food. Went with my boyfriend for Sunday lunch - both starts and main were incredible. By far the best Sunday roast I have had in Edinburgh! Will be back.
L. W.
A pretty nice pub. Bright, airy space, big oval tables (which is great with a group, but does mean there are fewer of them and could be a problem when it's busy), pleasing decor with some small vintage touches and clean bathrooms, decent drinks choices. When I was served I was told a wee bit about the wine I ordered. If you like environments with a vaguely hipster feel to them, you might like The Fountain.
The drinks menu is good and bad in equal measure - the suggested drinks combinations are a really nice touch with some interesting things on there, but the "£3 4/5" listings is much more annoying than charmingly quirky, and £2 for an ungarnished glass of Coke from the gun feels a bit steep.
Overall, it's a pleasant space and certainly the nicest in the vicinity. I'd go back.
K. C.
Sleek, stylish, quasi-antique interiors. A handsome selection of craft-beers and top shelf liquors behind the bar. Friendly, unobtrusive yet attentive staff. As bars go, the Fountain is everything you could hope for in a local. But beyond that, it also manages to have a thoroughly hearty and satisfying selection of pub grub available, including a delectably moreish braised beef shin pie and fish and chips so delightfully crispy they're worth getting fat for. Wonderful set-up welcomes babies and kids to visit without having the joint take on the air of a glorified creche. Just ace.
R.
Great bar, great food, very friendly service, and decently priced. If I lived closer I'd be here very frequently. Nice place to go for a meal before the cinema across the road!
S. C.
I mostly visit for drinks, rather than food which seems more of a sit down meal type of place rather than quick burger and chips type of joint. Also seems pretty family friendly - on one visit the place was chockablock with buggies and their inhabitants. Good range of drinks, on the more expensive side of things, so nip across the road to mccowans if you just want a quick bevvy. Stay here for a comfy sofa and fancier beer.
D. C.
Devided into 2 area: the pub with the bar and sofas, and the dining area where you can only seat if you eat.
Very sunny and pleasant terrace at the end of the day in Spring/Summer
Very good Gastropub food.
Stylish decoration and clean
Very nice choice of bottled beers
But quite expensive.
N. M.
The Fountain is a great find. A pleasant addition to the Fountainbridge area. If you want to pop in and have a drink it's lovely. The decor is cool and a bit quirky with a mix of big tables and sofas and armchairs. I must mention that the ladies toilets are just great-they always make me smile (go and have a nosey ladies). The staff are knowledgeble and helpful, and happy to reccommend new drinks. The food is outstanding. The menu always offers something special. Noteable mentions go to the Fish and Chips (fresh and tasty) and the Sunday roast (a choice of three meats most weeks with great veg and accompaniments). Price-wise The Fountain is not the cheapest place to visit, but it's worth every penny.
D. N. A.
Excellent bar in an oft ignored area of town. Food and selection of drinks available is fantastic.
As befits its good reputation it can get VERY busy at peak eating times so you're best to make a reservation if you plan to eat.
J. H.
This pub has been transformed into a great, relaxed venue with a great selection of beers, spirits and cocktails, the best Bloody Mary I have had in a long time.
The food is always amazing and the roast (especially the Yorkshire pudding) is the talk of the town.
Perfect for a pre or post cinema drink, with cineworld right across the road.
M. C.
The staff are always super friendly and they even gave free treats to our puppy Quentin. Booked in for brunch next week as we saw others having it and it looked AMAZING!
C. F.
Have had hit and miss meals here but gemerally its been nice. Good range of drinks. Anyone who had the 'pleasure' of seeing the fountain pre makeover will be shocked. It looked like it should have been condemned but looks great now.
G. L.
Amazing breakfast, had the Scottish breakfast and a flat white. Lovely stuff, ten on ten. No need to use the sausage as a breakwater as the beans come in their own cup. Jurassic park!
E.
Such a cosy atmosphere. Great food, great drinks. Games available, and a wonderful place to have a drink with a loved one or a friend. My favourite bar in Edinburgh
H.
Child friendly, and a great atmosphere. Excellent drink selection too, for lager, beer and ale lovers.
The food, however, was disappointing. Won't be eating there again, but will happily meet friends and family for drinks.
S. M.
Finally, a quality pub in this area of Edinburgh, which has been sadly lacking for a long time and is conveniently just across the road from the Cineworld complex.
The interior is stunning and comfortable with lots of lovely finishing touchings (like wooden shoe mould on the mantelpiece).
The menu provides classic 'gastro-pub grub' - a good selection of real ales and well cooked comfort food - pies and fish and chips as well as more interesting options on their daily specials menu (I opted for two starters and had scallops on a cauliflower puree and beetroot cured salmon).
Quite a few of my friends have also commented that the chips are the best you can get in the city. I may have ate a couple - they were pretty good but the verdict's still out!
K. O.
Very nice place I had fish which was so yummy - the place is cosy and families can also enjoy their meal. It is quite loud and its missing that music to give it a vibe. Other than that we enjoyed.
I. M.
Fantastic friendly staff, great atmosphere, food is genuinely delicious and has a fantastic range of beers, wines and spirits. Superb bar - adds a bit of class to the area!
S. H. B.
Excellent food, friendly staff and a really great atmosphere. This is a great place to meet and enjoy a good meal and chat with friends. Highly recommended.
E. M.
A nice, cosy place for a socialising with a drink or a bite to eat. Quite an extensive menu, which can sometimes be 'above the odds' for what you get, but they are maybe trying to attract a particular clientele. I like the 'no football colours' policy they hold (as this place is near a football ground).
F. M.
Definitely an asset to the area, which is quite run down but has so much potential!
Gets really busy though as a result so if you want a space get in early.
Lovely food and huge selection of drinks on offer.
Opposite the multiplex with a big cinema so handy location wise in that respect.
J.
Great pint of Guinness
K. M.
Very accommodating to a variety of customers including families. Knowledgeable bar staff and good food too. Good place for sure.
P. J.
Five stars for the food.My wife and i enjoyed a delicious burger and chips, and whats more, there was plenty of it.
Highly recommended for the relaxed atmosphere, friendly staff and good service.
J. B.
Too many tables and when a breakfast costs 8-12 ££ you expect the best ingredients but you just don't get that here, it's got to decide if it's a new hipster drinking well or a high stand eating place as the two aren't mixing well here at the moment.
P.
A very amazing place. The ambiance is great and the food is even better. I recommend this place for the best traditional Scottish food you'll find this side of the border.
N. M.
Love this place so much. Great staff, amazing food, great decor and atmosphere and huge selection of drinks. This is the coolest, cosiest bar I know and has really cemented itself as the jewel in the crown of the Fountainpark area.
P. C.
The Fountain is a lovely surprise in the Fountainbridge area. Perfect before and after cinema, it has been renovated and it oozes class! Decoration is great and staff are really friendly and helpufl. Their menu has a great selection of dishes and I strongly recommend as a starter their Haloumi salad with tomato chutney. Over Christimas their mulled cider is tasty and as heartwarming as you'd want it to be ;)
H. M.
Very good Sunday lunch, slightly expensive, but very good food, drink and atmosphere. Would recommend!
M. L.
Great menu and drink selection, and fantastic staff. I've always left very satisfied whether I've had food or just drinks.
J. T.
Modern, light and airy, serves excellent range of beers. Let's in the dogs. Never tried the food, but it looks very good.
S. L. (.
So, the old Fountain was a bit of a dive! The people who own a range of pubs like The Golden Rule, Cross & Corner have purchased in the last couple of years and a transformation has occurred!
It's a lovely place to go pre/post cinema (Cineworld across the road) and the food is lovely as well as service with a smile.
Recommend if you're in the area!
S. G.
Location, food, and amazing selection of drinks, including for teetotallers. (My only gripe is that I always feel that colours get sucked out of the place, somehow I feel like I have entered a monochrome universe, there is the permanent candle light or a faded incandescent bulb ambience. I just can't put my finger on it... :) )
C. D.
Warm, inviting and friendly. Excellent choices of (frankly divine) food and drink, and attentive staff. Good music in the background and dog friendly.
M. F.
They do not have a lot of choice for vegetarians :-/ bit disappointed as we went there for a bite after the movies and just had some cheese and went home...
The place is quite nice and good service too.
S. S.
Delicious food, nice atmosphere and waitresses really kind. I have been here for lunch, and prices were affordable. Highly recommended
D. 0.
Great food, beer and atmosphere . nicely priced food with quality. Good service for a table of 15
t. S.
Really nice food and a good selection of beers on tap. A pleasant place to go with friends
K. L.
Lovely local pub/restaurant. Both do great breakfast and dinner! Added plus is they allow dogs in!!
K. M.
Always great to visit a place that doesn't view a woman having a drink by herself strange! Lovely place. Will be back for food. Cheers
A. M.
A good quality local pub with a good selection of drinks, tasty food menu and stylish decor. The drinks can be over priced but it the atmosphere makes up fetched extra cost. Their beef pie is worth a try
B. R.
Been twice and both times have been really good. Tasty food and drink is not terribly priced
B. D.
Excellent food and the best fish and chips I've had recently. Outstanding selection of drinks.
E. P.
They offer fairly good seafood. Which is very noticeable. Not the cheapest pub, but it is nice. Sells nice German beers.
L. C.
Liked our visit. Staff were friendly and helpful. Good selection of toys for our toddler to be amused with. Food was good and service was prompt.
R. H.

Meals are less impressive, but I still love their cheesecake.
D. G.
Very civilised bar with an excellent selection of beers and spirits. It has an ambiance that lifts it above everything else in the fountainbridge area.
M.
Fab food, great atmosphere. A bit different from the usual chains located at the fountain retail park. Try it out!
J. K.
Good selection of craft beers and whisky with tasty food as well. Great for a pre movie dinner and drink.
T. N.
Great food, not the widest selection but we've never lacked for an option and it's always been excellent
J. K.
Well decorated bar with a nice range of beers and friendly staff. A bit of a walk from the centre of town, but worth stopping in if you're nearby.
S. W.
What an absolute suprise this place was. I don't normally eat steak but I had one here. Fantastic. I would go back.
K. P.
Our family of 4 had a great experience at the Fountain. Our server Chris was great; knowledgeable and friendly.
T. W.
Lovely food, although a little expensive. There's a lot of large tables here, so it's often a little difficult to get a seat for 2.
c. L.
Lovely bar, pleasant staff, must try the food one day, I hear it's superb
R. L.
Friendly, chatty staff and a good selection of ales and gins. Good to reserve a table if you are in a group.

R. D.
Really good food, friendly staff. A wonderful evening.
J. M.
Up market pub and restaurant. Food is over priced for what you receive. £1.50 for an extra single depressing slice of bacon is poor show. £4.50 for a pint.
E. W.
Excellent ale and food. Friendly atmosphere.

(Translated) "The Fountain" is a nice & relatively small restaurant with a small but well selected menu. Fish and chips, the salad and the Mac'n'Cheese as well as the brownie for dessert are great dishes that I highly recommend to everyone.
The staff is very nice, but you should book in advance to secure a place to get, especially on weekends.
All round, also priced, a successful evening, definitely worth a visit.
