Reviews of The Holyrood 9A
B. P.
Very sympathetic pub. Off course dark brown. Very nice and kind service. They offer a lot of different beers. We were suggested to taste several beers (1/3 pints), which was a great idea.
Also great with our beers was the burger they served. I had the bohemian (as that was how I felt at that moment).
I recommend this pub for an easy, intimate and cozy experience.
D. C.
Tasty burgers and sides. The staff were very friendly and effective. Food was served promptly and nice and hot. Burgers not the best in town, but good for the money. First time I’ve been in there in a while, so nice to go back.
J. B.
The burgers are fantastic. If you're American and think you'd rather look for something you can't get at home don't ignore this place. The Scotsman or the Haggis burgers are definitely a distinctly Scottish take and both are delicious.
Great food, great drinks, great atmosphere.

Came in before noon and had a look at the (limited) breakfast menu. When I didn't prefer anything breakfast, the chef made an exception and cooked me a bacon cheeseburger. Really good burger, fries were hot and crisp, excellent meal. The wife has gluten free demands and they do have a special gluten free menu, but made her the avocado toast with gluten free bread. Very friendly staff, and very accommodating.
C. W.
Lovely staff and great atmosphere and burgers. Service was good and there was a dog inside so assume dog friendly. Toilets were very small but clean.
X. O.
The food was good and the size of the portions was very generous, I couldn't finish my plate despite having a big appetite. I was pleasantly surprised with the chips as I come from Belgium, so have high standards, and it's rare to find a restaurant abroad that does chips well. Big negative point: service was extremely slow!
C. W.
Good food, wide selection of beer.
Very dog friendly.
P. R.
First time here this trip. Food and drinks were good, nice atmosphere. Unfortunately, had to go to the bar to order a second round as our server was busy talking to a waitress. We ended up leaving and heading to another bar for the rest of the night.

After walking for km's in Edinburgh. What a fantastic city. I wish South Africa had such beautiful buildings. Well how delightful to come to this pet friendly place. The sweet potato chips were absolutely way past delicious, só crunchy and a mouthful of deliciousness. And like most pub's this one is also pet friendly.
N. H.
Been a few years since I was last here but pleased to say it's still one of edinburgh's best kept secrets - top quality bar with a laid back vibe glad to know somethings don't need to change !
D. M.
Amazing beer selection. Flawless fries. Great vibe. Went for the steak burger with haggis. Super flavorful, but the burger patty was very dense and very well done. Probably a great spot for late night bites. I’d definitely give it another go.
M. B.
Very busy when we where there. Food was great, tasty and beer was cold. Excellent place.
R. G.
Fantastic place to rest and have a meal! After a busy day exploring the Royal Mile we really enjoyed eating here, the atmosphere is cosy and welcoming. Haggis Bon Bons! Definitely give them a try! Delicious! The burgers are very filling and beautifully presented. Great value for money!
T. T.
Very nice craft pub. Walked past it twice and didn't realise till i googled "craft".
It was written outside, but then it's written outside lots of places that aren't crafty.
Bit of a tardis. Both bigger and nicer on the inside than it looks like from outside.
Lots of taps but about 10 on today due to covid i presume. Still, good selection friendly service on a quietish Friday afternoon. Well cared for. Beer and place. Will come back next time I'm in town. Recommended.
M. D.
Good food and dog friendly. Seating could be better, some too high and stools with no backs.
S. N.
We were recommended to this place by a friend. First night in Edinburgh and probably the only right thing to do is try the haggis in a form of a burger of course 😬 Just don't google what's it made of if you don't know already. It's an acquired taste but it not bad either. The wife had the chicken burger which was good too. Service was excellent with a friendly waitress. Good beer and reasonably priced. 7/10.
J. M.
Nice pub, really cool interior. Food was very average or just below. I went for a simple cheeseburger with bacon. The burger itself was overcooked and under-seasoned, which is a bad combo. The mustard mayo was just normal mayo with mustard seeds so had no real flavour. The chips were nice though. I wouldn't rush back here as the prices are pretty steep for what you get and there seemed to be a lot of better alternatives for a fraction of the cost. Couldn't fault the staff though, so thanks for the hospitality.
A. M.
Great food and wide beer selection, great for group of friends for a meal or drinks
L. P.
Lovely bar, even after working in Edinburgh for a year and visiting many times I've found a hidden gem. Also dog friendly so a bonus for me 🥰 …
B. M.
Food outstanding, service and atmosphere great too, in the heart of University Edinburgh, check it out for yourself you will not be disappointed
S. N.
Absolutely gorgeous food, beautifully presented. Mainly burgers but definitely way above average. Dog friendly. Superb gin selection. Strict Covid precautions. Staff friendly and prompt. Well done.
p. g.
Only had a beer in here as they pretty much only do burgers. Food looked good but decided to move on and find something other than a burger/fries. Nice place though. 👍 …
D. K.
First time in Edinburgh and we saw Haggis as a burger option. Never eaten it before and we kind of dreaded it but the burger was delicious. The staff is friendly and welcoming. Can't recommend it enough!
A. M.
Amazing service great food quality and quantity. They have a lot of crafted beers and also guest kegs. Great burgers 🍔 …
I. V.
Inviting from the moment you walk-in, smiling staff, excellent gourmet burgers to pair with your flight of beers or anything from cocktails to spirits. Food comes to your table fast, just out from the kitchen. WiFi available and fast too.
S. T.
Bad burgers. Sides were decent, but £17 for a frozen burger not acceptable. On the line for price for food.
An hour for burger and fries for a group of 6?
They did knock off bill so can’t argue with that, but can’t give more than this.
Service was lovely and staff attentive.
C. T.
Amazing atmosphere, great food and a wide range of drinks. What more could you ask for
I. E.
We went for a casual dinner and drink but met with delicious high-quality food and servers that went beyond the call of duty in helpfulness and friendliness. Only thing better might be to play some local music! Highly recommended.
A. K.
Had a great time here. The place serves tasty food and has a huge burger selection. There is a nice selection of starters, desserts and beer and other drinks as well. Staff is very friendly, the place has a good vibe.
F. F.
Very nice pub with great atmosphere. The most tasty burgers that you can find in town. Highly recommend it!
P. B.
Dog friendly.
Love this place, huge selection of drinks, staff are amazing, helpful and attentive.
Burgers are outstanding and great value.
They’re on Eat Out to Help Out scheme so extra good value if you visit Monday-Wednesday.
M. N.
Great food and beer with table service. Excellent place.
A. J.
Had a great evening here. Beers and burgers outstanding and service to match.
Cant wait to visit again when in Edinburgh
Thanks guys
A. A.
Cracking beer selection. Miserable bar keep woman. But charming waitress. Really tasty burger. Onion rings were so hard you could bang nails in with them.
But a tasty dinner washed down with wonderful grapefruit IPA (see photo)
Nice atmosphere with funky muzak. Glad I popped in.
S. M.
Really nice place. Cosy and casual, lovely staff, every one of them. Burgers and beers were all fab. Great range of craft beers if that's your thing, although it's not mine, but there is something to suit everyone. Would appear dogs are welcome because we had this gorgeous one at the table next to us.
M. H.
A great selection of guest ales and food. I had the smokestack with haggis. A really nice and tasty burger. Well worth trying. The cask ales are good with some nice IPA's.
S. P.
Good selection of well kept ales matched by an impressive choice of spirits. Food looked great too, just didn't have time to sample it due to a busy Fringe Festival schedule. Located close to Waverley station and the Pleasance. Will certainly visit again during next year's trip.
J. M.
Loved this place! It's so down to earth! Good food and fast service. Really liked that they had a gluten free menu as well as full drinks menu! Would highly recommend
P. W.
Decent selection of drinks on tap. A bit loud so it was hard to talk but it was a good place for a nightcap.
C. H.
Love this pub and the employees they make you feel so welcome and the food and drink are amazing hope to come back soon
S. M. H.
Lovely vibe in the restaurant, great selection of beers and burgers and of good quality as well, I just wished they grilled it to medium since mine was almost well done inspite of asking for medium done.
J. J.
Had a fantastic breakfast here. We had pancakes, bacon, and maple syrup, with a side of sour dough toast and jam. The pancakes were cooked to perfection and the smoked bacon was excellent! And there was plenty of maple syrup (not the meagre ration they you get in some places). The staff were friendly and service was good. If I had one complaint, it might be that the toast was a bit expensive for what it was. It was just under 3 pound for one round of toast, and i don't think it was actually sour dough on the morning we went. It tasted just like standard white bread. But apart from that, everything was great. Nice place to go for a drink and food! 👍
L. 1.
Lovely bar.
Great menu and probably the best chips we had while staying in Edinburgh.
Compared to the others bars and restaurants around royal mile it’s a bit cheaper and not as crowded, which is really nice.
The waitress was a bit confused but still very nice.
Had a great evening.
E. S.
One of my favourite places to eat burgers. Usually it doesn't take too long to bring the food to the table although weekends can take a while.
A. B.
Good atmosphere and friendly staff are the toplines!
Went on a Thursday evening & night and it was pretty busy. From the location and street I wasn't expecting such a cool place tho and it is worth mentioning.
The drink selection is decent and the food menu too. I ordered a Texas Chicken burger which was of average size and tasty enough. Side was chips and they were ok too. Nothing extraordinary though but fine for a casual drink orientated evening.
While busy, we could still hear each other and talk without having to be loud which is always a good thing in a pub!
As often the case, there was space at the counter but we were seated at the back.
Only drawback (beyond the food menu not being on the gourmet side) was the waiting time which was quite long at some point for either food or drinks. They were busy and I can understand a certain delay but I would still expect a faster service than the one we received.
Overall, I would recommend and come back for a simple drink mainly and side filling food type of evening.
B. R.
Great burgers. Among the best I've ever had. And their selection of craft beer is really good as well. I've been here several times and it's usually quite crowded and noisy, but still worth a visit.
D. K.
Lovely place to eat and have a drink, had the vegan burger, very nice!
H.
Nice burgers and friendly staff.
l. m.
Ok for a drink, friendly and inviting but unfortunately menu not to my taste
M. N.
Visiting our daughter in Uni so was a great close by spot to go to. Ticked all our boxes as it was dog friendly and had food options for our family group. We ordered a mix of meat burgers, mushroom burger, halloumi burger & plant burger. Good array of beers, though some were not available but table service worked well and the dog got a bowl of water and some gravy bones.
R. G.
Lovely food served very quickly despite being busy. Definitely worth a visit.
M. W.
We visited at 5pm on a Friday night and just about managed to get a table, so worth booking of you are going. Despite being busy the food arrived quickly and was very good. The chips were especially tasty.
The early Friday evening crowd made it noisy but other than that minor negative I'd recommend it.
d.
Good bar. Good burgers. Tap beers are OK.
K. G.
Lovely attentive staff in this dog friendly restaurant.
The burgers were delicious and the dog even got her own plate of treats.
One thing (that always puts me off) is that they serve on wood. Personally I find this unnecessary with such good food. Plates will do nicely.
P.
Wide range of draft beers, nice food, and fair price.
T. w.
Loved this place! Forget the Marco chain pub brewdog. Head here!!! Totally worth your money for decent beer. Real awesome bottle range but extensive tap range too.
Plantly of cocktails too!
Awesome!
J. D.
Great burgers. Always busy so best to book .
R. v. T.
Nice atmosphere, great service and delicious food!
A.
Beautiful bar. Good craft beer. Recommend
C. H.
Impressive ale and liquor selection. Great food. Friendly and good service. Thoroughly recommend!
m. f.
Always a great burger in a nice location and atmosphere. Staff where helpful and friendly as always, highly recommended!
A. G.
The food is amazing. Seriously, the burgers are life changing. Really nice staff, covid rules in place, great selection of drinks.
E. H.
Staff really friendly and helpful, burgers are great, great selection of drinks, even if you prefer cider, wine, or G&T! They will help you pick a drink and let you sample a few, too - very helpful if you don't usually drink beer! You can reserve a table for a large party.
K. P.
A small but very cozy and lively place. Good food choices, friendly staff, delicious food. Definitely worth a try.
R. T.
Nice atmosphere, handy location and well setup for the current situation. Would be worth booking in advance as it's very popular during the day, didn't get the chance to try the food but the burgers looked really good from a distance
M. d. W.
Nice atmosphere. Awesome selection of beers and great burgers. Overall simply a great experience.
T. J.
Great food and even a Jammy Dodger Sundae too. The dog was very welcome with water and dog treats. Vegan and vegetarian friendly.
Excellent service and thoroughly enjoyed the food and the ambiance.
F. M.
Amazing place to have a beer and eat a burger! Everyone is very kind.
Talking about the food, I had one Hollywood 9a burger and it was a good size and fair price, 12 pounds and 5 for one beer.
M. C.
Really chilled place to go with great staff. We went during the day, don't know how it changes in the evening - but we had a great experience. It's also dog friendly. Only 4 stars as my beer was a bit flat.
T. M.
Really nice variety of beers and the haggis burger was amazing!
A. S.
Lovely dog friendly place, our dog got a bowl of watter and some dog treats as soon as we got in. Verry friendly staff
F. W.
Absolutely fantastic pub! We had our greyhound Mattie with us and they let him in while we ate our dinner and had a few drinks! They even provided bowls of water, gravy bones and hugs - so friendly we will definitely be returning xx
A. J.
Loud, jovial atmosphere with a good vibe and friendly staff. Good beer selection and lots of vegetarian options. The halloumi peri peri and sticky toffee pudding were excellent.
D. B.
thanks for saving my camera and your burgers are excellent 😀👍🏻 …
a. p.
among the best food i had in Edinburgh. great selection of beer, great burger, and cant get enough of the sweet potato fries.
D. T.
Excellent place, never disappoints. Great range of beers and spirits. Burgers never disappoint. Always worth a visit. Now offers Gluten Free Burgers which is a great addition.
G. G.
Quick service, good food and nice atmosphere. Had the Chilli Death burger which was as you can imagine quite spicy. Chips were boat like in shape which was great for containing the slaw on them and crispy all around. Nice clean pint, would recommend.
C. L.
A really nice place, and very dog friendly! I've come here a few times now with my partner and will definitely be back. Very reasonably priced for the area, and the food was good (the very crunchy fries were a highlight for me, but my dog was equally stoked about the biscuits he got). A very good pick for dog owners - my boy was brought treats and a water bowl (which was offered on arrival, we didn't need to ask), and the staff was very friendly all round. Definitely a good place for dog owners (and non-dog owners alike).
S. M.
The staff was friendly and helpful. We enjoyed the burgers and the beers.
S. R.
Great selection of draft beers. Local and craft brews, so ask for help or recommendations if you don't know. Service is good. Burgers are good too
P. Y. -. J.
Always delicious. We're the customers for over 10 years . We and our dogs are always welcome there. Love it !!!
E. E.
Good pub, good food but dreadful cider
A. E.
In summer, this place is a cool refuge with an impressive beer and cocktail lineup, their staff is attentive and accommodating and prices are reasonable. Service is quick whatever the season and for us, it is the perfect place to catch up with our friend family whatever the season. It is centrally located, spacious and comfortable. We have a dog who likes to hide away in little books and there's plenty of those. In the moodier seasons it really shines with its abundance of candle lighting. There's delicious options for vegans and carnivores alike, it is the place we keep returning to for the opportunity to chill with the people we care about.
P. B.
Chilled good burgers well worth visit 😋 …
D. S.
Best Burgers ever been made by Chef BIG BOSS!
G. M.
Good place, large beer choice, burgers are OK but not the best in the city !
A. L.
Looked for a place that accepted dogs and this came up. Lovely pub, with excellent service and amazing food. Our wee pup was greeted with water and a snack, and was beyond delighted. The chips they serve are perfect. Can't recommend it enough!
T. K.
Nice food. Dog friendly, they even brought some treats and water for the dogs

Coffees are meant to be drank at coffee shops.
A conclusion reached after having been presented with numerous sub-par cappuccinos in, otherwise, fancy looking, coffee machine equipped pubs. To those that have been led to believe that i am the kind of nagging, pretentious person that would have no qualms in leaving a lengthy complaint, i can assure you, you are mistaken.
But the association between pubs and scolded milk, for example, has been deeply etched in to my subconscious, so much so that i see no real reason why i should risk it by visiting my local for anything other than a cold, freshly-poured pint. It's not that there is a shortage of coffee shops in the world. On the contrary. One could comfortably argue that there are far too many.
So...having said all this...i find it quite amusing that i am currently sitting in a pub, sipping on one of the finest cappuccinos that i have had in quite some time.
The Holyrood 9A is a high-ceilinged, candle-flickering, deceptively spacious, wooden floored, gorgeous looking pub, which is exactly what beckoned me to enter for an inquisitive look around it's premises. When it comes to such establishments i value aesthetics more than the pint itself and, at that point, it was clear that i was destined to spend the next hour or so huddled away in that distant, leather cushioned corner, typing away on my laptop's keyboard.
Being to early for alcohol consumption (well, for me at least) and having spotted the coffee machine perched beside me, i decided to muffle my reluctance, place an order for a cappuccino and hope for the best.
To my surprise, i was shortly presented with a cup of coffee that looked entirely out of place with it's surroundings. It looked almost as if it was prepared and brought in from one of the many neighbouring coffee shops that surround this area.
So...in short..lovely looking place, lovely coffee and, most importantly, lovely staff.
Will be visiting again.
Chris

Very quaint, young lass was working her fingers to the bone, perhaps needs a little help. Food was ok as was the beer.
F. S.
Good atmosphere but very average burgers. All burgers are cooked well done with no option to change
R.
Spent 3 nights in Edinburgh and visited each night. Excellent, friendly and social staff as well as a great selection of beers on tab. Will be visiting again on my next visit. Highly recommended.
G. T.
Lovely pub, great beer - can't wait for restrictions to lift so we can enjoy it more
R. S.
Extensive list of craft beer and ales served in a relaxed cosy venue. No TV/Sports is a bonus too. Probably my favorite pub in that part of town.
B. J.
Staffs are so friendly!
So foods are also yum, and coffee is fabulous!
Recommend! 👍 …
T. M.
Incredible beer selection and delicious burgers, though you may want to book in advance as it's usually very busy when I go there.
D. D.
Great bar with a good choice of draught beers and quality service.
P. F.
The best beer and best Hamburger of edinburgh!
I am sorry for what some waiters heard from me yesterday due to my hayfever, they were the best
A. T.
I had a vegan Halloumi Burger and the patty could have been a little softer. The #ambience was amazing though I'd say it was very dimly lit and maybe it's just me but I started feeling sleepy in a few minutes despite being hungry
S. P.
Great bar lots of beer choices. Good charcuterie board. Friendly staff.
N. C.
Great food and drink. Friendly staff. Highly recommended.
F. M.
Always amazing service alongside great range of craft beers and delicious food but they went above and beyond this evening when I accidentally left my bag with all my worldly possessions; it was waiting there safe and sound for me when I realised and the staff were proactive in getting it straight back to me.
J. N.
A very warm and cosy atmosphere. Great music, and staff were polite and attentive. We went during Wednesday lunch hours. Got the plant based burger and Muhammara burger - both 5*. Chips nicely cooked. Beer selection is good. Some good craft choices - would love to see more options in future. Would recommend and definitely come back.
E. B.
We went there late on a Friday night and it was very loud and busy. The staff was friendly and the service was quick! Also very nice cocktails and many beer choices.
M. H.
This place is amazing. Really good service and the food and drinks were unbelievable. It may well be the best desert I've had in Edinburgh since I moved here 5 years ago. The quantity is great--a perfect amount, not too much and not too little and it's very well balanced, sweet but not too sickly. Definitely the best pumpkin spiced latte I've ever had too.
M. A.
Amazing Scottish beef burger. Great service. Loved my Bloody Mary. Will come back when I’m in Edinburgh again.
H. H.
Super-nice staff, very warm and dog friendly. Good food, reasonable prices, variaty of drinks. Will come back!
T. S.
Good one
B.
Small selection of normal and veg based burgers with a smattering of haggis available. Friendly staff and decent burgers at a reasonable price. Not far from the Royal Mile but not exactly a picturesque location.
M. H.
Perfect place for a small group of people to get food and drinks quickly. We went in without booking with a group of 8 people for lunch. Service was fast and accurate. Very polite staff and great food.
M. H.
Great. Always liked this place pre-kids because of the selection of beer. Now with kids it's a good place to get food (and a nice beer or two). Friendly staff, nice food.
M. H.
Awesome dog friendly pub. Staff were very attentive and the food was great. They also made a real fuss of our dog providing her with some treats and a water bowl.
M. C.
Wonderful human & dog-friendly pub, with an excellent selection of beers and great food. Gourmet burgers a speciality. You have to try the deep-fried haggis balls!
T. O.
Nice cosy pub with great range of beers and spirits. However the burgers are the best I've encountered in a long time! I would even go as far as to say BEST. BURGERS. EVER!!!! a must visit venue!
M. C.
Friendly bar. Good selection of draft beers. Burgers are great, as it's the breakfast!
M. D. P. M.
Friendly staff, highly recommend the meat free haggis burger
S. C.
Food was good but service was a bit slow.
P. O.
Decent for burgers. A little more expensive for beers.
A. M.
Best burger I've ever had! Amazing, quick and friendly service. Couldn't have asked for a nicer place to enjoy some dinner and drinks. The variety of drink options is brilliant too! Will definitely be coming back and would recommend to anyone!
S. B.
Enjoyed the food, chips are awesome. Really attentive and accomodating service. Draught coke tasted a bit off but they were happy to keep trying to replace. Bit pricey for what you get food and drink wise personally.
B. w.
Lovely attentive staff. Had the BBQ burger and my partner the chicken. Really really nice burgers and a great atmospheric pub. The IPA selection was excellent. All round a top spot for meeting friends for a drink. When the staff, food and service are all 5 star it makes the experience of eating out so much more pleasurable.
S. P.
great burgers, cozy and welcoming atmosphere, excellent service!
L. M.
Great pub with a great selection of local craft beer. Tasty burger menu.
N. P.
We were visiting from the US and stopped in since it was close to where we were staying. It was casual and the wait staff was especially friendly. They even let my husband sample a few beers on tap before he made his selection. Burgers were smaller than what we see in the US, but still filling and good. Would definitely recommend to other tourists who want a good beer and burger.
T. T.
Fab great burgers, beer and excellent staff 👍👍 cheers guys. …
A. H.
Pleasant atmosphere. Very attentive staff. I have to admit the burger was not the Best I've had. Simply because the bun was cold/chilled. Otherwise quite Tasty, we both thought. But pricey. My partner enjoyed his beer.
M. H.
My family of four came in during peak time with our fingers crossed that we'd find an open table. We were met with a number of tables with jars showing they were reserved and were prepared to sit on stools when a very friendly waiter (I'm sorry that I didn't get his name) offered us one of the reserved tables with the caveat that we had limited time to eat (just over an hour). We were glad to be able to sit at a table after a long day of sightseeing on our feet - including both the National Museum of Scotland and Edinburgh Castle - so we happily sat down for a quick meal.
My girls shared the kid's chicken burger and my wife and I shared The Original - a beef burger topped with lettuce and caramelized onions with a side of pickles. Both meals came with fries. The Original had that meaty taste that I'm always looking for, but not always getting. It was very satisfying. The girls liked their chicken sandwich, which was a bit dry based on the last bite that I was offered to finish, but they liked it so whatever. The fries were crispy and there were various toppings available including ketchup, malt vinegar, HP brown sauce and a powdered spice mixture which smelled heavily of cumin and gave the fries a kick of spicy flavor that complimented the burger well. The pickles were a good mixture of sweet and salty and sour and included cucumbers, gherkins and pearl onions.
My biggest disappointment was that they had just ran out of the smokey wheat beer that I had wanted to try, but the waiter offered me an orange wheat beer that hit the spot and left me wanting another pint or two.
If our time wasn't so limited in Edinburgh, we'd definitely try this place again. It goes on the list of places to revisit when we're back.
L. C.
On of my favourite places in town. Amazing burgers, good selections of beers, good service and friendly staff. The tables are grouped in distinct parts of the pub. Hence, despite it's quite a big pub, it is not too loud. Good bar with possibility to sit or stand, too. May get very busy at the weekend. They accept reservations. Good for groups and couples alike.
S. R.
Great atmosphere, Bloody Mary's and sweet potatoe chips!
B. W.
Every time we're in Edinburgh we stop in here and it never disappoints
E. O.
Good music, nice selection of burgers and beers on draft. Friendly staff.
K. K.
Good food. Great beer selection. Friendly staff. Would go back!!

Huge selection of craft beers so there is something to suit every taste. We didn't have time to try the food but the menu looks well put together and the food delivered to nearby tables looked very good. Always a relaxed atmosphere here
D. P.
Like the decor and the atmosphere! Suitable for family too.
Food is good enough.we normally order sweet potato fries! Burger is good! They serve food on a wooden chopping board as a plate, which is quite nice! Door is abit small for buggy, but it is not too important!
A. N.
Delicious burgers
A. C.
Great craft beers and lovely service
K. S.
Great food, great beer and great service. Pleasant atmosphere as well.
J. K.
Good selection of beer. Decent burgers, but pretty bad service. We were waiting for at least 30 minutes after ordering our food. Would recommend for a quick meal but not for a great dinner. There are better restaurants around if you’re going for food. More expensive than it needs to be but decent food and beer.
P. S.
Good selection of beers and attentive service.
L. A.
This place makes great burgers, great salads and they have a fantastic variety of drinks. It's a cool, atmospheric place to go for a daytime pint or dinner.
Unfortunately every time I go I am disappointed with the service. I know it seems silly, but we never seem to have smiles or eye contact reciprocated, whereas staff are friendly and easy going with each other. It makes me feel like I've offended them.
Like lots of cool and popular places in Edinburgh, I feel like its success has allowed them to be forgetful of customer service.
J. K.
We have now had breakfast and now dinner at 9A.
The meals and vine were well served and very tasty.
Great vibrant atmosphere and in addition they are dog friendly!
Very cosmopolitan and wide age range of customers all being welcomed by staff.
Great find close to the Scottish Parliament building!
P. A.
We ordered 14 burgers for my adult son’s birthday dinner.
The burgers were amazing and could be the best burger I have ever had. Definitely give this place a try.👍 …
s. r.
Nice old fashion pub, nice service. Fairly priced drinks.
H.
Had breakfast here and was delighted they were able to accommodate for my vegetarian Mum. Great hearty breakfast in a lovely cosy setting.
g. B.
Lovely atmosphere, fantastic staff. Definitely be back
S. I.
A genuinely lovely pub with decent food, great staff and one of the best draught beer selections in the city. Also dog friendly so always some friendly, furry faces around!
R. B.
Good selection of craft beers. The burgers are good but not great. The patty is a little too thick and was brown through (no hint of pink in the middle). The sweet potato fries are very good. Staff were very good / friendly.
H. V.
amazing veggie haggis burger, nice beer selection, overall a nice place with nice people :)
P. M.
A gem. Chosen by our son for a group of 6. Great ambiance, attentive staff and good grub. The drinks list is extensive. The beers available very good indeed. C19 rules obeyed with no fuss. Thank you all at 9A.
P. S.
It's an OK place to go for drinks and a bite with friends. The food needs a little bit of more love in the making. The atmosphere is nice though.
C. S.
Fine food, fine beer, fine whisky, fine service 😊. That's it. After two visits and four burgers we will come back. The Scotsman is a very good burger, the Haggis a really fine burger too. My wife had the BBQ and the Holyrood, both are burgers, and she was satisfied and lucky 😊. She had a cocktail too and liked it so much. I recommed to taste it all 😋. And my favorite recommendation is: eat The Haggis 🤩. Thank you, Holyrood9A 😊.
A. C.
Was taken here by my friend while we were staying in Edinburgh. He said "they have amazing burgers". So obviously, the 'steaks' were high *wink*...sorry.
Anyway, he was not wrong. Had the BBQ burger, and it was delicious, absolutely loved it. If I was in Edinburgh again, I would make sure to go here again!
C. M. (.
Great haggis burger and a good selection of craft beers. Wish I wasn't driving so that I could have sampled some that I've never seen before. Helpful staff. I can imagine this place having a great atmosphere later in the evening. Not far from the Royal Mile and worth a detour to find it.
O. W.
Very good taproom would recommend to anyone
S. D. P.
Very characteristic place! Nice and fries staff, amazing burger and FANTASTIC BEERS! They are very careful about the style of the pub which is very suggestive and old fashioned.
I don't understand why they put a moist piece of boiled courgette on the top of the burger! Once removed that everything was OK
R. M.
A really great pub, fast picking up a reputation for their gourmet burgers, so as a burger fan it was odds on I was going to visit! There is a great selection of beers from around the world behind the bar and the burger menu had plenty of choice for every taste. The service was quick, the food didn't take long to arrive and the portions were generous. The staff seemed friendly enough and the decor was a little more upmarket than your average boozer. If you fancy some lunch, or a bite to eat in a relaxing environment not too far off the royal mile/high street then this is your place.
B. G.
I'd actually give it 4 and a half stars. Loses 1/2 star as menu is virtually all burgers. However they are good. Wee bit pricey so more of a treat than an every day place.
Service ace. Food ace. Dog friendly. Will return.
P. H.
Great food, atmosphere and service. Well worth a visit if you're around the area
S. K.
Extensive selection of Scottish craft beers and a few ciders as well. Staff was friendly, quick and very knowledgeable. Not as much a loud, rowdy college bar; more where couples and groups go to meet, hangout and talk over a nice drink.
A. P.
Fab little pub, very dog friendly with a dish of water and treats delivered for our Bobby. Delicious burgers. Would definitely return
T. G.
Great selection of pub classics and local beer. Add some haggis to your burger for something unique and mouthwatering! My partner also tried the venison and black pudding burger, yum! Make sure you ask the bartenders for a recommendation on a local beer.
N. G.
Nice setting with a good choice of beers. Food is tasty and the service is good. Nothing to be raving about but no complaints either. Food is limited around starters and burgers so don’t expect variety of choice but it is all prepared to a good standard
K. T.
Really good beer and the service was superb pub was busy but staff able to keep us posted on availability of a table. My burger and fries was presented nicely and tasted great! Will return again.
E. M.
I always enjoy myself here. Great food, a wide range of drinks and a great atmosphere. The caesar salad was amazing and the burgers on the brioche bun are a must-have. The staff 'bent over backwards' to accommodate the party I was with on my most recent visit. From experience, it is advisable to book a table, but if they're full-up, it's worth it to chance your hand for a table. You never know.
Z. N.
Cozy bar with eating options. They have a large selection of beers and ciders. We had a great time there and the staff was very friendly. You can bring your pet and they even drive them a nibble and a drink.
B. G.
Now my favourite haunt in Edinburgh. The most accommodating place, I have experienced in the city. We had our dog with us, and were kindly given a quieter seating area. Cocktails were perfectly poured, and as we became steaming, the bar staff still treated us like human beings. More than we deserved.
D. D.
Friendly staff. Announced the last order pretty friendly. Wide selection of Whisky and Ales.
J. D.
Cosy atmosphere, food is good quality & value for money. Wide selection of beers & spirits. Loyalty stamp card scheme is also good offering £5 off your next bill with every 10 drinks bought.
S.
Had my breakfast here 2 mornings & my dinner Tuesday evening...
Great, friendly service...
Tasty food. Haggis with breakfast & on a burger, in the evening... Delicious!!
Great American wheat beer.. just ask for a pint of Blue Moon. You won’t regret it.
S. A.
Lovely beers and the staff are great... Nice evening for a visit...
B. F.
This at first appearance is a small pub but don't be fooled it's large inside and has an incredible range of beers. The staff are friendly and very helpful. Had an Aubergine salad which I would recommend highly.
D. M.
This place has, perhaps, the most lovely atmosphere in all of Edinburgh. For one, it's candle-lit; for two, it's wooded; for three, it never draws a rowdy crowd, but rather a calm though still lively one; and, for four, it's incredibly spacious.
The drink prices may be a bit higher than average, and the food prices -- as compared to other hangs in the area -- may be a bit steep, though if you're looking for a calm and casual night out, or date, this is your place.
Fully to mention, the beer selection is excellent, the mixed drinks are superior, though the food is 'meh' yet enjoyable enough to forgive.
A. E.
Very cool bar, had great music, beer list and great service
G. W.
Really nice place with a nice vibe. Has it's little issue though, like a can of juice costing £2.45 but being served warm from a shelf in a short spirit glass. If your going to charge premium rates, at least deliver a premium product. That said the staff were all pleasant and it was clean throughout, even the toilets were spotless (although very small). Defo worth a visit.
D. B.
It's a lovely pub with a great atmosphere and selection of alcohols. The food here is also good especially their burgers. It can be quite noisy so not the best place for a close conversation but definitely nice for a get together with a group of friends. It's worth a visit if you're in the area.
K. C.
Had lovely lunch there yesterday. Hubby had the stinger burger, I had chicken jalapenos n son had kids beef burger. I just could have eaten more! Lovely n tasty. I tried the hubby's n tasted really nice. Would suggest coleslaw or corn on cob as extras. As we had met 21 years ago yesterday couldn't resist trying the 21 year old Glenfiddich whiskey. Very niCE. Connor one of the waiters was very helpful. Kids portion was really good too
S. M.
Great selection of beers and spirits, friendly staff and great food just off the royal mile.
You can't beat Holyrood 9a for a beer and burger session. One of the best burgers in Edinburgh.
I've been many, many times and they never disappoint.
G.
Nice burger, perhaps the best pub burger in town. Always a great selection of craft beers. Friendly staff and cozy environment. Under 17 are allowed until 10 pm.
P. M.
Good sister bar to the Red Squirrel and The Southern. I think I prefer this to either of the other two. Large burger menu, and never had a bad one. A huge selection of local beers, and a nice atmosphere, does get very busy though.
h. c.
Very nice range of beers. Staff are excellent and super quick service.
P. R.
Slightly off the main thoroughfares it felt calm and less "crowded" if there can be such a thing in these times. Pleasant and efficient service with basic and tasty bar food and good choice of local and other ales . Certainly hit the spot on a scorching Sunday afternoon.
P. C.
Fantastic selection of craft beers, the place has a good atmosphere and attentive staff. Not exactly wallet friendly, but worth it
M. v.
overall an amazing bar but the main selling point has to be the Best burger in Edinburgh. Menu has got everything you'd wish in a burger and you will be pleased to know the vegetarian options are just as awesome. decent beer selection and friendly staff.
S. M.
Really lovely restaurant. Burgers were amazing. Nice that you can take your dog inside and the staff bring over water and dog treats. Would visit again, even got a lolly pop when we paid our bill!
J. M.
Friendly quick service. Good portion sizes and fairly priced. Kids portions were generous too. They allow dogs in as well making sure my pup had a bowl of water and a treat.
D. A. B.
We made for Holyrood 9a after a long arduous morning walk to Aurthur’s seat.
Route: starting from ruins of st anthonys chapel on the edge of the Salisbury crags, We walked along Queen’s drive passing Dynamic earth exhibit and landed in Holyrood 9a. We had called ahead to make a reservation
Ambience: typical upmarket pub with an astonishing range of taps. You’d be spoilt for choice at the variety available. The flipside being, you would end up taking a very long time to order. We decided to order the Weihenstephaner and Aspall Suffolk. With a side of Nachos. We liked the Weihenstephaner more and order a second pint. This was to be the first and one of the few places we’d ordered at second pint.
The service is leisurely, not hurried; the staff is very attentive and helpful. I really appreciate the time they took the time to explain to me the variety available on the taps and the flavour profile before i ordered.
It is a good place to spend time with family and friends . An excellent recommendation in the area.
W. B.
I gave 5 stars purely based on the awesome burgers. Definitely worth stopping by for the food.
G. M.
Some of the best burgers in town, good drinks menu and wide selection of beer. Service is generally good and timely.
E. M.
Great beer, fantastic selection of local and international beers in kegs. Possibly the best burgers in Edinburgh. Just pity it's so often busy - book a table if you want to eat there in the evening.
C. V. B.
Excellent selection on craft beers and burgers. Owned by the same people as the Southern and the Red Squirrel, it has a similar trendy atmosphere and tends to fill up on weekends. It is a great place to try some new local beers and relax with friends.
D. H.
Great food 👍 and a great porter cafe racer and brilliant staff one great time …
M. T.
Lovely small bar/pub with excellent service from very friendly staff. Great variety of beers and laggers and while I didn't try any of the food a friend of mine got the burger which was quite large and very thoughtfully put together! Would recommend as a hangout!
P. H.
Really good burger and service
A. B.
Big selection of local, craft and imported beers.
Also a nice kitchen, with an ample selection of food. I just love their burgers.
The place is a typical gastro pub, with ample space and nicely decorated. Plenty of candles!
J. H.
Good eatery. The view of a few of us semi trendy and slightly too pricey. But it is Scotland's capital. A good brunch and sweet menu - although the two of us who ordered date and sticky toffee pudding didn't find any dates.
A. C.
My favorite place to go for a drink or food in Edinburgh. Food quality is excellent, great burgers ( I strongly advice to any of my friends the Blue Murder Burger), good selection of drinks, with also some local options. The atmosphere is great, comfy and classy at the same time, with a bit of rustic. The staff is very nice and friendly. Prices are a bit high for my wallet but definitely not to much and it is well worth it.
g. R.
Best veggie breakfast I have ever had, no wild ingredients but everything made with care and attention to detail. Nice pub with friendly staff and a great selection of beers & ales. This is now on my list of must visit places when in town.
J.
Lovely experience on the 04/09/20 with a walk-in for 2 people. Reasonably priced food and drink and there was an error with our starter not coming but they corrected it after our mains came. Was quickly rectified. Staff was very attentive!
s. f.
Nice traditional, old fashioned bar with a good food menu.
The burgers in this place are amazing.
It gets busy at dinner time, but there's a reason for that.
K. F.
A great stop after a day of hiking up Arthur's Seat. We called to enquire about reservations after our hike, and despite it being within the hour, they were happy to reserve a table for us.
Service was great and so was the food. Wonderful burgers and fries, with cold beer to wash it all down.
We missed out on trying the Black Deer burger, as they were sold out, but everything else we ordered was spot on and delicious.
C. H.
A really great pub, fast picking up a reputation for their gourmet burgers, so as a burger fan it was odds on I was going to visit! They are part of the Fuller Thompson pubs group so the Southern and the Red Squirrel also have the same menu.
There is a great selection of beers from around the world behind the bar - I think 11 are always on draft and lots of bottles too, and the burger menu had plenty of choice for every taste.
The service is always quick, and the portions generous. I love the Pioneer Burger although the pork and chorizo is also tasty. Next on the list is the chilli death burger! Chips are great and you can get sweet potato fries too.
The staff are generally really friendly and the decor is a little more upmarket than your average boozer. If you fancy some lunch, or a bite to eat in a relaxing environment not too far off the royal mile/high street then this is your place. For us locals its a fab place to catch up with firends over a drink and some great grub!
K. A.
The burger is overpriced and not so good. Its a pretty cosy place though
J. K.
Nice pub with an old school character. Good selection of craft beers and whiskey's, and plenty of seating. Dimly lit, which adds to the atmosphere, and there staff are friendly, usually allowing you to sample the constantly changing selection of beers to help you make your mind up.
S. C.
With possibly the best burgers in town (in my opinion), Holyrood 9A also boasts a fine selection of beers, rums, and of course, whisky's.
If you are going to get a burger, which you will, you'll also make sure to get it on a BRIOCHE bun and get SWEET POTATO FRIES to go with it. Trust me.
I've been to Holyrood 9A countless times now and not once have I been disappointed other than not being able to get a table. The staff are attentive though and will do their best to get you a seat ASAP and their beers are on constant rotation so there's plenty to occupy you at the bar whilst you wait.
Enjoy!
A. M.
Great atmosphere. Good selection of beer on tap. Reduced menu but plenty of burgers and light snacks to choose from.
R. S.
Brilliant bar with 20 plus taps of cask beer and a good whisky collection. Very friendly staff and good bar food. Known for its burgers but the Ceasar Salad with chicken is top notch too.
L. W.
Stayed in Edinburgh for one night and wanted just some good, local food and found The Holyrood 9A. It's just outside the main drag, so likely a close distance to wherever you're at if you're in the main city area. We came in party of 2 at 4pm on a Thursday and there was plenty of seats. They have a big couch area in the room in the back that was really cozy. We loved our food and beer! They have lots of craft beers and a good diverse selection, I ordered the grapefruit wire and bf ordered the volcano ipa. The burgers come with (!!) fries, I opted for normal while my bf had the sweet potato, if you like sweet potato opt for them they're really crispy and fresh! I ordered the hipster burger and loved it! Not just because I'm a hipster, but because it had arugula and some melty smoky sauce that tied it all together. My bf's BBQ burger was exactly that, tasted like a mix of charcoal smoked meats and sauces with crisp red onions. The service was very fast, we were out within an hour, and they were super attentive and friendly! Love their food…
N. S.
I have only been to Holyrood 9A twice, but both times for the same reason - a fantastic burger and a pint of beer. In this establishment, you'll eat one of the finest burgers you will have ever had after you've finally managed to pick one from the extensive burger menu. From the burger bun, to the taste of the meat (no horse to be found!) to the chips, it's all high quality stuff. Do expect to pay about £8/9 for your burger though.
As for the beer - that's good too. One thing to note is that the beer taps are not on the bar, they're coming out of the wall behind the bar ;)
M. M.
Went with two friends for burgers and beers. Food was ok, drinks were good. Food choices are limited and a bit pricey. It is a nice looking, spacious pub. Nothing special about the place.
S. R.
Nice enough boozer, didnt eat the food but it looked great. Myself and a friend tried 4 beers between us. the sours and the peach cobbler IPA was extremely good. 4 stars for that beer
I. P.
Good food, great music and nice staff
A. N. C.
Karl is great, a beer by loch fine ales. 3.8% session ale. The range of beers her is second to none. Burgers are excellent too. Though notably note as good as my last visit.
D. B.
Very fashion. Popular with the tourists. Everything comes on a bun. Ordered the haggis. Came in a bun. The tables were quite crowded and close to start but once my horrific chat got flowing we started to clear the place out to a normal level. Wide variety of different craft beer but certainly at Edinburgh prices.
A. A.
Great staff but the place is so noisy. If the music was a bit down then people will not have to shoot and then it would be much much better 🙂 …
G. S.
Consistently good food, more impirtsntky a great choice of excellent quality beers than available locally in my Wokingham area of Berkshire! Serving staff friendly and bar staff well informed on what's on offer or alternatives. Usually have a Holyyrood burger, but today the local charcuterie platter and sweet potato fries worked well with Brew Demon red IPA. Been coming here for 4-5 years, yet to be disappointed!
E. I.
Descent food and drinks, good vegetarian and vegan options. Nice atmosphere and friendly staff. Went there twice during our visit.
C. S.
Decent pub, pricey tho
L. L.
I love this pub, it's my wee local so thats also a plus sign and ally the manager is just a great a person and great manager along with all the the other staff. The food and drinks are also beautiful.. banging burgers 😁👌😚🎉 Laura 😚 …
S. T.
Unfortunately couldn't stay long, but a great atmosphere with low level lighting and an impressive selection of drinks. Would have loved to have stayed for the evening.
R. P.
Extensive choice of spirits and beers including 4 stouts and able to try all. Friendly staff, attentive, very clean tables. Food looked good but didn't try this time.
D. T.
“Salt Horse Beer Shop & Bar” two blocks away is much better if you want great craft beers and food. I wouldn’t know much about the food because they wouldn’t give me a menu after asking 3 different people at 4p on a Sunday but did have a beer that was good, nice selection and decor, hence the 3-stars.
E. W.
If you're looking for a great burger in Old Town, this is the place. Top notch food, great service, and a local vibe (which is hard to come by in this area). Our only complaint was Holyrood 9A's unfortunate representation of the United States on the beer list: they only offered Blue Moon! We were sure to advise our waiter this portrays us in a bad light. Try the 55º North burger; you won't be disappointed.
D. N.
Excellent choice of craft beers and decent burger based menu. Sister pub of the Red Squirrel on Lothian road and the Southern up in Newington. They still run their pretty generous loyalty card scheme across all three where you get £5 off food once you have ten stamps earned from buying drinks.
J. B.
Gourmet burgers and craft beers = my kind of pub. I love Holyrood 9A. A huge range of bottle and draught beers and ales and a wide selection of beef, chicken and veggie burgers. They also do a tasty breakfast which is a great hangover cure if you've sampled a few too many of the beers the night before. It's a busy place so you might have a bit of a wait for a table but well worth it.
S. D.
This fantastic bar is easily the best place in Edinburgh to go for a burger and is a regular choice when deciding where to eat in the city centre.
The wide range of burgers will cater to any taste and there's a great selection of other meals on offer too. The food is always impeccable in both taste and presentation and are very generously-sized.
Not only that, but real ale and cocktail fans will be spoilt by the vast array of tipples on offer behind the bar.
J. H.
Recommended to us by staff at the nearby Holiday Inn, does a really good burger and massive choice of beers. A bit noisy for us oldies but it's just the sound of people enjoying themselves! Charming young staff and olddy world decor.
H. M.
Love this place. Great beers and great burgers - what more could you want in the vicinity of one of the finest walks in Edinburgh (Arthur's Seat). Be sure and ask for the loyalty card if you're drinking with your meal! Beer selection is either not as impressive as it used to be or has faded somewhat in comparison to more specialised beerhouses but top notch nevertheless.
P. V.
Always a pretty decent selection of well known beers from session regulars to bingo-bango let's try that out. The burger menu has had an overhaul but still tasty as hell.
G. J.
Quite possibly a contender for the best burger in Edinburgh (although Bells Diner would give them a run for their money). The burger menu is vast - good luck deciding what you fancy - and mighty tasty. Upgrade to the sweet potato fries, and ask for a side of the blue cheese dip, and you're in heaven.
It does a cracking beer selection, and is sufficiently on the pub side of gastropub to be comfortable for a drink on an evening.
J. R.
Lovely little bar with great grub too. This is one of the places where the Edinburgh burger scene started. Proper juicy burgers dripping with flavour. The drinks are reasonably prices and they're fans of craft beer/ales as well as the usuals. Place can get busy at night so if you're in a large group, it's best to prebook a table!
C. B.
Great bar for beer lovers. 25 taps of ale and possibly the best burgers in Edinburgh. Anyone who remembers this pub from before it became the Holyrood 9A in 2009 will know what an amazing transformation it underwent, and that its newfound popularity is well-deserved. Well done to whoever made that happen!
M. D.
I loved this bar! I've been a vegetarian my whole life, and I can honestly say the veggie haggis burgers was one of the best veggie burgers I've ever had! A great beer selection too!
B. S.
Great pub! Bar staff particularly helpful in suggesting beers to match our preferences - discovered Bunk Smoky Wheat here! The fries are also especially good!
L. A.
Had the haggis burger twice in a row because it was so good! Great atmosphere, fire lit, relaxed mix of couples and groups enjoying chat and meals.
J. L.
Great pub, delicious burgers and mostly top notch staff - one exception I've encountered was a bartender by the name Adam who was rude and condescending from the get go, to a point where he would outright accuse customers of lying despite not being asked for input on an issue that happened in the past. Soured my experience and I hope I never have to put up with him again - without Adam working there, easily a 5/5 pub.
M. L.
Good food, quick service. One of the best burgers in the city, definitely in this part. Good range and well made. Big selection of beers and always a good atmosphere.
C. D.
Outstanding burger, great environment, friendly and personable staff
s. v.
Nice bar, friendly staff, great beer. Good burgers. Terrible vegetarian meals, tried on a couple of occasions- Expensive and poor vegetarian options. Milking the burger market.
I. G.
Typical Edinburgh city centre ale house. Nothing notable to report about it. Wide range of beers if you have the time and constitution to compare them. Staff pleasant enough. I would probably have forgotten the place by now if Google hadn't nagged me for a review.
A. W.
If you don't like burgers (well firstly you must be inSANE), then probably best not bother with here. If you do however, you are in for a real treat, their ridiculously expansive burger menu might take you a while to peruse, but there is something on there for everyone's tastes. The do have some wicked and filling salads too. You need to be hungry here. Great beer selection on tap too. I came here last after the Edinburgh Marathon, and I think half the other runners had the same thought, and there was a wee bit of a wait. But that just made the burgers all the better when they came!
M. T.
Great burger bar. Wide selection very similar to red squirrel... as it owned by the same company, but on the other side of the bridges. There is a good variety of burgers, but not much else apart from around 4 salads, so if you aren't looking for some form of bun filling maybe look onwards. This includes beef, chicken, vegetarian options and off the track options like venison and pork and chorizo (a must try). Great atmosphere and the staff are friendly and open to questions but it can get noisy so if you are looking for a catch up maybe head to a local office shop then back there to get your food on. Good décor, thistly cross on tap and the option of a glass of cheap wine, a must try in Edinburgh.
L. L.
good food but really expensive
C. M. O.
The three stars are for the great beer selection. We are world travelling burger enthusiasts, but waited an hour for distinctly average burgers which cost (mine being the chili burger with extra bacon) over £13. Dry, over cooked patties and slap-dash preparation. For that money you should at least be asked how you want them cooked? Upon complaining and asking for the manager, he sheepishly circumnavigated our table avoiding eye contact. Only upon refusal to pay the full bill did he actually pluck up the courage to talk to us, at which point we were told that we had been warned it would take a long time and there's no way it had been an hour. We weren't warned it could take a while until we had already waited for 40 minutes, and fortunately my girlfriend had taken a photo when we ordered and texted it to me so we knew exactly how long we had waited. He was right. It wasn't an hour. We waited 58 minutes, so I magnanimously apologised and continued to refuse to pay the whole bill. He grumpily acquiesced, muttering as he left. Good luck if you go there in festival time. Stick to the beer which is expensive but good and arrives in less than 58 minutes.
N. F.
Great burgers, great beer, and friendly staff too!
Definitely recommended 👍🍔🍻 …
J. A.
A very nice place for a drink. A wide variety of beers from which to choose. Whilst it's hard to draw a conclusion on the entire menu from a single item, the food is excellent.
M. “. R.
Went with a group of 7 while visiting Edinburgh and was very happy with the diverse drink selection, tasty menu, and friendly service.
C. M.
Amazing place, fantastic choice of drink and food
L. W.
Great food, excellent beer selection, and even better staff. I could not be happier with my visit to this establishment while visiting Edinburgh. I would highly recommend to anyone who enjoys a wide range of craft beers and gourmet burgers. If I ever find my way back to Edinburgh this will be my first checkpoint!
M. S.
Sometimes you need a burger, and there's no point in settling for a second-rate one. The Holyrood 9A fills this niche by making the best burgers in Edinburgh (no, really, it's true) and just adds to this by supplying a large range of excellent craft beer. The only downside are the prices, which are a touch steep - but for an occasional indulgence, this place is excellent.
S. H.
Dog friendly pub!! Great selection of beers and lagers - they have an extensive drinks menu. Great food menu too. All the staff were friendly, polite and attentive.
D. N.
Best burger I had since leaving the state's.
D. Q.
Beer and Burger taste great.Nice location.
G. G.
Good beer and a friendly ambience
J. R.
Great place. They actually messed up my reservation, but were incredibly apologetic, gave us free drinks and seated us pretty swiftly anyway. The burgers are great and as are the beers.
G. W.
Decent pub, solid range of beers. Can't go wrong here.
R. M.
Amazing food, friendly staff, great selection of beers. The burgers are absolutely fantastic and the staff are extremely knowledgeable about local and craft beers. I highly recommend the chilli death burger
S. G.
Excellent ales and really good burgers. Gets very busy even on weeknights but service is still good. Staff are really friendly and bar staff have good knowledge of the ales on offer.
T. W.
Very good place for burgers and beer. Beer prices vary considerably so watch yourself! I'd give it five but for the fact that it's always swelteringly hot and they do t seem to be able to do much about it.
D. J. G. (.
Has an amazing selection of beer and lager and does great burgers. Drink isn't badly priced. Weird pumps at the back if the bar. Very busy.
R. M.
I was expecting much more from the past reviews. Nothing special
K. M.
Lively pub, good atmosphere, good selection of food and drink. Friendly staff
A. H.
As always, great beer, good food and a lively atmosphere.
R. J.
Delicious food - a wide range of great burgers, and a variety of local beers and ciders. Friendly staff and a lovely atmosphere. Also very dog friendly.
H. S.
Surprising good burgers & chips...
F. V.
Best burgers in town! Can recommend the Ecosse and Holyrood burgers. Great beer selection and friendly staff. The place is always packed, so you can expect to wait for a few minutes for a table...
H. P.
Nice pub, was there with work colleagues to enjoy some local delicacies and the burgers. Beer was good, enjoyed the selection. Burger was good, not a fan of a cold bun, but the haggis bon bons I enjoyed.
M. M.
Up to 16 beers on selection. Great social place with comfy chairs and tables.
H. v. d. V.
Great value for money. Cosy atmosphere and tons of beers
S. N.
Good quality burgers, varied selection of beer, and desserts that weren't an afterthought. Bear in mind that it is really focused on burgers; there's not much else on the menu for mains.
S. S.
A friend of mine was in town before I was and he is not a traveler. He found this gem and posted up. They were incredibly friendly to him, helping him with craft gin and scotch advice and always had a seat and a smile when he walked in. I enjoyed the same hospitality when I joined him there. They have a huge spirit and beer selection so go bold.

Great burger and bear place
A. S.
Great place for a couple of half pints (£2-3) on a cool, wet summer's afternoon. Others seemed to enjoy the burgers, £7-9. Accommodating and friendly staff, and a nice atmosphere.
R. R.
Great food and a lively atmosphere. Always a good selection of beers. Bit pricey though and sometimes very very busy - don't go for peace and quiet!
O. O.
Good pub & restaurant hangout for young and older people.
S. C.
The southside cousin to the Red Squirrel and the same set up - good beers and a big list of burgers. Although they are pretty similar in set up and style i prefer the Squirrel, but certainly i wouldn't turn down a trip here if i happened to be on this side of town. The italienne is my burger of choice and alas I've never made it to desert. If you're not too fussy about the beer they do a cheapish carafe of generic wine which is a pretty good deal.
D. M.
A really nice little pub with a good menu. I'll go back, again
T. B. G.
The Holyrood is a Bavarian style burger with beer mustard, Hereford Hop, rocket, red onion, and caramelized onion mayo. The star of the burger was the Hereford Hop cheese, which was melted to perfection, and paired very well with mustard and red onion. The caramelized onion mayo added an additional depth of creamy flavor to the burger making the condiments really work together. Unfortunately, because of these bold flavors the beef did not get a chance to stand out on the burger and the bun was only average. Overall, the Holyrood is a solid burger but it could have benefited from a juicier piece of beer or a pillowy bun to make each bite a bit more savory.
R. M.
Great atmosphere beers and burgers well worth an evening
S. L.
Love the burgers (esp. the one with hot sauce and guac), love the vibe, love the location. Especially good on cold, blustery days as it always feels warm and buzzy. Feels like you're in a cozy casual pub and a trendy restaurant all at once.
A. F.
Good selection of craft beers, most quite well-known and not especially adventurous. Pub food centred around tasty burger menu. Busy, large pub.
N. G.
Burgers and beer. Great food, super friendly staff who made good recommendations. Ordered a meal to share and they brought it split up with an extra plate. Highly recommend
K. C.
Cracking little place. Absolutely fantastic food, every single time. Drinks are great and the guest ales are always interesting. Never had anything I didn't like here.
C. W.
Lovely meal, fabulous friendly staff and very dog friendly brought our little pooch treats And water , portions are huge and really good veggie selection
w. b.
Burgers are sublime! Relaxed and friendly atmosphere, Ended up going for breakfast the following day, well and truly recommend the breakfast bap.
5*'s all round from me 👌 …
R. D.
Superb burgers and top drawer selection of craft ales, look nowhere else!
C. W.
A very busy bar, with large selection of ales to try which keep on changing. Very friendly staff who know a lot about the ales they're selling. Plenty of seating. We didn't eat their but the food coming out looked and smelt amazing.
R. B.
Really really yummy burgers and sweet potato fries!
Part of the same group as Red Squirrel and The Southern.
Lovely place to meet friends after a walk up Arthurs Seat, really well priced and nice surroundings
J. A.
Good burger, some interesting local beers and friendly service. A great place to have a bite and a pint in Edinburgh.
J. N. C.
The decoration is good. Comfortable chairs and sofas. Many beer options and drinks in general. The burgers look good. The tea is also good
K. H.
Had heard great things about the burgers and I'm not sure if it was ever possible to live up to my expecations, but I was a little disappointed! The burger was good though, and the chips were a bit cold. Nice place though and I'd give it another shot!
R. S.
Very friendly staff. Delicious food. And a wide selection of drinks. And dog friendly! But it's a good idea to make reservations.
M. V.
Great burgers, beer and service! They accommodated a group of 6 when they were pretty busy. This was one of our favourite meals while visiting Edinburgh.
R. G.
Friendly staff, amazing beers, good atmosphere and excellent food. Not a place you would pop in on the passing as slightly out the way but definitively worth the visit.
P. B.
Nice gastropub with a good food menu and a decent selection of beers. Bar staff are clued up and friendly. Previously enjoyed a great breakfast there too.
K. L. L.
Good burgers, cold buns bring them down and small portions of chips, could eat more after one meal there. Nice selection of craft beers.
J. N.
Great rotation of beer on tap, something different every few days. Solid burger selection, a few Vegetarierin options, good service. A go to spot for me off the royal mile.
S. W.
Great food, great service, and very accommodating for dogs!
P. N.
Excellent choice of cask and keg ales. Service was a bit hit and miss. First barmaid deciding to restock fridge halfway through serving us. Rest of the staff were ok though.

If you’re in the Holyrood area near the Scottish Parliament and you want an Actual Pub, Holyrood 9A just off the Royal Mile has a great selection of around 20 craft beers, and some tasty burgers – called “two handers” – to boot. It’s also a really good pub to visit for a weekend brunch.
M. W.
Dog friendly, amazing selection of draft beers, superb burgers, table service and really friendly staff. 👍 …
D. J. R.
Wide range of burgers. All of them really excellent. It's generally busy which I guess speaks for itself. However service is pretty slick and staff are really nice.
A. W.
The burgers were really good, and a great variety to choose from. Could not fault the venue, service or food! Also very dog friendly 🙂 …
S. L.
Nice pub. Great way to spend our first evening in Edinburgh.
J. H.
Lovely cosy atmosphere and wonderful choice of beers on tap/bottled!
a. b.
Some of the best, well cooked interesting recipe burgers i have had since well forever. Fantastic range of beers, very, very busy usually, but worth it
W. C.
Great range of beers on tap; Leith Juice was a personal favourite. Lovely cozy fire and general atmosphere too, with board games to boot.
P. Z.
A pub just off the mile, Gourmet burgers were brilliant with enough variety to make even a vego happy. The staff were friendly and pleasant. And the rotating craft bears were class
K. W.
Interesting choice of burgers, sensible kids menu. Amazing ice cream flavours. Good service. Nice relaxed atmosphere.
M. B.
Great burgers, great beer. If those two things float your boat, get yourself along to Holyrood 9A. Very easy to get to from the Mile and Cowgate. Will definitely be back.
M. L.
Roomy, friendly and local - just what we needed on a cool damp evening in Edinburgh. Lots of burgers on the menu, and of course, a great selection of whisky and things at the bar.
B. C.
Cracking pint of Schiehallion. 10 out of 10.
S. R.
The Beer, The Beer, The Beer. And the burgers :-)
Holyrood 9A has a fantastic selection of real ales and craft beers. They also serve gourmet burgers, so what's not to like?
I used to drink in here back in the day when it was a bit more rough and ready, and I remember feeling a pang of despair when I heard it was getting "poshed up"! All my local boozers, like Joseph Pearce's on Montgomery Street, were getting yuppified :-(
Turns out The Holyrood 9A has retained lots of character and a dream selection of rotating real ales putting it on a par with the Hanging Bat and Cloisters in terms of Beer Pilgrimages! One of the few places in Edinburgh to serve Brave New World on tap.
So let's talk about those burgers eh? Awesome selection of fillings and toppings with some nice add-ons like sweeet potato fries to replace your string fries.
Great place to spend an afternoon and catch up with some friends (who probably have a small child in a 4x4 pram)
R. D.
Holyrood is one of a number of pubs in Edinburgh that offers a good quality range of ever changing craft beers but where it improves on the experience of others is to also offer the 'traditional' pub atmosphere with wooden floors, slightly dark and a comforting fire in the back room during the winter months. They also offer a really good selection of pub grub with a massive array of burgers and a choice of four different styles of chips to go with them.
I'd really recommend this pub to anyone coming to Edinburgh and I always use it as the end of a photography walk around Edinburgh because of the great relaxed atmosphere and free wifi.
T. M.
One of my favourites for amazing burgers, as well as a varied selection of beer to wash it down with. Great service and friendly staff.
B. W.
Staff were great. Food was good but a little expensive. Very dog friendly.
D. R.
Extensive beer and ale selection, and cracking burger combos. Try the chilli death with sweet potato fries. Really like this chains bars all across the city.
Z. P.
In need of comfort food? The Holyrood 9A will sort you out. This relaxed, chilled-out bar serves up a rather fine selection of gourmet burgers. A friend highly recommended the bohemian – a beef burger with chilli gouda, sliced turkey, arugula, prosciutto, pesto mayonnaise and string fries on the side. Drinks-wise, we enjoyed some raspberry beer and a guest ale called Brewed Awakening (a stout infused with coffee).
B. K.
Great service, good range of ales, decent food, child friendly. Will defo be back.
A. N.
Holyrood 9A has a great selection of beers and very good burger definitely a really address in Edinburgh. However it can get very busy Thursday to Saturday and getting a table or space difficult.
C. F.
Great place for a cosy drink and/or food. The Scottish breakfast was fantastic, very tasty and a great price. The staff were very friendly and helpful.
G. x.
Very helpful staff and a great beer selection. We got a nice table by the fire which was very pleasant. Music at a constable level that allowed conversation.
G. W.
Great place and good food.

The 9A is part of the new 'this is actually a great bar' scene in Edinburgh. A great selection of beer that constantly changes and top food menu means that you can come here for lunch, dinner or purely for liquid refreshments.
K. M.
One of the best pubs in the city, with local people frequenting the place. Long opening hours and consistently great service and selection of ales. Seriously thankful this is my local - what more could one ask for?
J. B.
Great food and the staff really took care of us! We all had burgers and they were delicious. Hope to be backed try the others. Thank you H9A :)
P. S.
Decent selection of beers and nice burgers
A. S.
Juicy and well-matched burgers, fanatastic chips, friendly and cozy
I. M.
Great selection of beers, ales and whiskys. A good old fasioned bar just up from dynamic earth and the scottish parliament. I cant recommend enough the burgers, home made and packed with meat hmmm!
S. M.
A lovely cosy bar in the heart of the old town with a stylish on traditional Scottish decor, with an interesting selection of beers and a hearty burger menu.
Love their tasting beer menu and mustardy burgers.
v. W.
Great service, friendly staff, tons of beers on tap, unbelievable scotch selection, cosy atmosphere - can't really ask for any more than that. You won't be disappointed.
A. M.
15 craft beers on keg, 6 lagers (some craft), 2 craft ciders an 2 cask ales - something for everyone. Not to mention their vast choice of spirits. Nor their sumptuous selection of food. Go for it.
I. E.
Quaint, yummy, cozy & lively‼️
S. O.
Good atmosphere and great service, but their thistly cross cider was on the pricey side and their sticky toffee pudding wasn't great. Would consider this place average all things considered.
M. W.
Great burgers (lots of choices) and range of drinks. Good atmosphere and service. A local favourite. Can be busy but a nice hideaway from the craziness of the Royal Mile and elsewhere.
G.
Nice place with good atmosphere and comfy sittings. Large choice of good burgers and beers. Friendly and efficient staff.
F. W.
always a nice place to pop in for a pint. a good beer selection and friendly staff.

G. M.

S.
Great flavour combinations on the burgers, a step above the usual pub offerings. Big portions, lovely staff and best of all dog friendly!
J. B.
Great food, good service and fair prices. Servicing sizes were very decent as well!
M. S.
Good prices and delicious food! Nice ambience and good music :)
M. G.
Food was great, place looked pretty stylish. The server didn't come see us at all though and sat us in the far room. Service was not that good but the food made up for it.
윤.
Great selection of craft beers. Burgers were decent but not great as much as I expected. Burger is big enough and there are many options.
M. J.
Nice bar wirh great food. Well thought out and tasteful interior. I thought that it was a little pricey side for drinks, but that's Edinburgh for you!
D. H.
Had a great experience at holyrood! Amazing selection of beers and maybe... Just maybe the best burger I have ever eaten!!! Gets busy though so book a table!
K. C.
Eaten here three times now and love it. Great atmosphere and delicious food with vegan and vegetarian options. Will definitely go back!
A. M.

V. F.
Surprisingly good pub. Delicious food (especially the burgers) and varied ales. Nice staff and good atmopshere. Overall quite nice, except for the pretty high prices
L. C.
20 beers on the tap! what more do you want. Well, there's more - friendly staff, good atmosphere and good food. And different beers on rotation, so great for tasting & discovering.
J. T.
Really excellent burgers and beers from the team that also own Red Squirrel and the Southern. It can get seriously busy at the weekend though, so you are best to book ahead.
F. R. A.

Nice and friendly place, food was ok nothing special maybel a tad expensive for what's on the menu but i suppose thats Edinburgh for you. 3 stars is mainly for the staff and service.
S. M.
Excellent range in beer and a brilliant team of friendly, caring staff. The food is also quite nice, though a tad pricey.
N. B.
Another bar with an excellent kitchen if you like burgers and malt whisky (maybe not at the same time) it's the place to go. A great location near the bottom of the Royal Mile.
F. D.

Set up nicely in the covid requirements and a nice bunch of beers available.

The best burgers in Edinburgh! Do wish the tap list had some less happy stuff as well, especially missing the Blackball stout.

Lovely old pub, with a friendly atmosphere and great selection of beers and ales.

Helpful friendly staff, food is good and they have plates! In this day of bright soulless pubs this place is a winner for being cosy with a decent selection of beers.
S. A.
Lovely ambience, great selection of beers, great burgers
M.
Very nice meal however they did bring our mains while we were still eating our starters. Nice selection of both food and drinks.
I. D.
Really nice burgers. Nice staff. Pretty dark and kind of gloomy for lunch but really cosy at night for dinner.
R. W.
Felt quite family orientated and felt very busy and a bit noisy. Food was very average, service was good.
B. H.
Wonderful food, great service, and I really loved the treat that was given with my bill (pictured). My family loved their experience here.

Cozy, dog friendly pub with good drinks selection and very nice burgers. Much better than the busy places on the Royal Mile around the corner.
M. H.

Staff is fast and friendly. I can recommend haggis burger.
R. B.
Great food. I highly recommend the Hipster burger. Excellent selection of draught beers too.
