Reviews of The Oxford Bar
T. T.
Really welcoming staff. Throw back to real pubs from yesteryear. Nice pint of Deuchers IPA to finish off a day walking the streets of Edinburgh. Free bookmark was a nice touch too. Was that one of Mr Rankin's ideas?
J. H.
Fantastic as it is no frills but a proper pub. Such nice people to chat to and the staff were really lovely. A place to have a drink and a chat and tale in the day or chat to new people at the bar.
G. P.
Nice little boozer tucked down a side street.
Nice pint of Jarl as well
C. G.
Good traditional pub with a lovely barmaid. Once we
have finished with social distancing I will give it a five. Update Saturday 11th of June 2022. There was a very classy young lady behind the bar. It was a pleasure to be served by her. The other older gentlemen also seemed to appreciate that.
M. R.
A genuine local boozer. If I lived in the New Town I would be a regular.
M. R.
The quintessential pub. Loved this place. It’s small but inviting. Walked into the bar and felt welcomed even though we weren’t locals. Struck up a conversation with everyone ... correction, they struck one with me. It was awesome. Please visit this bar. It’s not hip or modern, it’s authentic.
A. M.
The Ox is a cosy little pub in a great location - fairly central but not right on the main street. It's reasonably priced, and despite its huge popularity (I admit to visiting because of the great Inspector Rebus!) feels less crowded than some of the other pubs nearby. Great little place!
S. R.
Well it was a lovely nightcap to a lovely trip! We stopped in close to last call but never felt rushed. Lovely conversation on a slow Monday evening with Katie (don't call her Katy. They're her enemies) about everything and nothing in particular. She has a kind hand for keeping the bar a positive spot. Met a few characters from Manchester and Dunedin who rightously defended the honor of Drambuie. All around brilliant place although we never left the bar itself it has a great, lived in atmosphere. Stop in here.
M. M.
A small traditional Scottish pub found on one of the less known but beautiful streets in central Edinburgh. Dogs are allowed.
The bar is a traditional pub set up but has a plethora of drinks from traditional ales, whiskey and good choice of soft drinks.
Down the road is the Cambridge pub too, all in the same street!
s. g.
Fantastic pub. Just had the best pint (x2) of Guinness I've ever had in Scotland. A gem of a place. A proper pub.
C. C.
Nostalgic place where Ian Rankin and his hero John Rebus drink. Not to be missed! Very friendly staff.
G. T.
Classic old man's pub with excellently kept ale. A great pint of Deuchars and Jarl
J. M.
I thought it would be bigger like it is on TV but apparently it is fillemed at another location, its a drinkers pub as there is no Dart board ,no pool table and no Juke box.
D. W.
A traditional Edinburgh pub and apparently a big favourite of author, Ian Rankin. Spent a very pleasant afternoon chatting and enjoying the place. No frills, no Wi-fi and no fuss. Loved it!
M.
A very traditional pub with good beer.
K. D.
Comfortable, unhurried, civilized - like your favourite pair of slippers. The perfect local.
L.
Great pub with a mixture of tourists and friendly locals. Belhaven went down a treat!
M. W.
What a great little pub this is. Sitting in the lounge with a Pale Ale in front of an open fire. It takes you back in time and I would definitely recommend it.
M.
Just a really lovely small oldfashioned pub, a lttle bit further from all the touristy places. I would come back here if I’m ever in Edinburgh again.
T. R.
Well worth a visit for any Rebus devotee
B. C.
Tiny back street pub in Edinburgh, friendly staff. Worth seeking out.
J. G.
Great pub friendly staff too!
V. W.
Great traditional pub in the heart of the city
R. M.
Loved it. Excellent mine host. Very pleasant girl and most welcoming. Good beer, as well. What more can one ask?
R. R.
This is a fun, friendly neighborhood bar.
J. M.
A treasure. Wonderful people, always a few great cask on.
G. G.
Interesting place with good beer and friendly staff
M. L.
Lovely, friendly real ale pub. Welcoming staff. Superb, well maintained interior. Highly recommended.
F. W.
Doesn't change and all the better for it. Nice pint of Stewart's 80 shillings and a warm welcome.
A. K.
Good old bar good selection of beer and whisky, good friendly staff
I. F.
The rating is totally biased by Ian Rankin's books. The places itself is simple and low-key and they don't accept cards...
r. d.
Outstanding small, beautiful, classic, friendly and lives up to all the expectations. No london pub can match it. None.
J. C.
This is a must go to place in Edinburgh for literary fans. The Rebus experience is here. Made famous in the novels and TV show by Ian Rankin. It is small but full of character. There is some interesting artwork on display to look at and to buy if you want it. It is only a few streets of Princes Street so only a few minutes walk from the hustle and bustle. Its well worth the short walk. These places need to be used to keep the history of this great city. I will be back in on my next visit.
D. H.
A great little pub, not big inside but just like stepping back into time how an off street boozer used to be! 👍 Somewhere just to have a good pint and chat with a couple of friends next to a open fire with no hair and graces! Friendly barmaid. Worth a try for a drink and a bit of a rest from your day 👍
P. F. M.
Finally got here after reading about it in books. Good, old fashioned pub, worth seeking out.
R. H.
If you love Rebus, you will love this place.
D.
Cosy old pub with good service and polite staff.
M. M.
Great pub - always visit here when in Edinburgh. Staff very friendly. Free from obtrusive music and T.V., instead lots of atmosphere and friendly conversation. Coal fire when cold enough. Excellent local art work for sale . Definitely worth a visit if its your first time in Edinburgh.
P. L.
Fantastic cosy little pub. We arrived right on the stroke of closing, but no worries, the barman helped us choose a couple of great local beers. Warm fire, and excellent spicy peanuts!
E. C.
Good afternoon last sunday with variety of musicians and singers. Scottish Folk and contemporary music. Watch out for events on website. Real local atmosphere. Don't be put off be small bar at front there is a cosy back room to sit in.
D. V.
This hidden gem in Edinburgh's 'new city' is like a flasback into a world long gone in continental Europe. The place is tiny, with maybe room for a dozen people near the bar. There is a larger space more in the back however. No pub food here but just beer and other drinks, with some excellent local beers.
When I visited, there was just a bunch of locals discussing British politics in quite an amusing way. A ton of atmosphere and a most friendly bar keeper turned this into one of the highlights of my most recent visit to the Scottish capital.
C. K.
Great wee traditional pub
J. A.
My favourite pub in Edinburgh.
a.
This is the kind of little old pub that still has faded white wallpaper on the ceiling. Tiny little bar, slightly bigger lounge. Nice local beers. A GREAT regular crowd. No glaring at newcomers as of they don't belong. Love this place.
J. M.
Old historic bar. Worth a wee visit but don't expect the barmaid to burst in to song.Or to smile or engage you in conversation & don't make the terrible mistake of asking for directions. Apart from that she was wonderful👌
P. M.
Small but does the job. A proper old school pub. Nothing fancy, a couple of rooms, log fire, and a small number of beers. Good for a quiet pint, or on Friday nights has a good atmosphere for post-work drinks.
J. G.
All good and cosy with the coal fire on in the lounge area
M. W.
Really friendly pub both staff and clientele. Dog friendly too 👍
S. M.
Good drink, good food, fast service. The selections of ales is pretty large, which is good as I like beer. It's best to attempt to get a table though as there isn't really much standing space in the bar area. Staff having to squeeze past you constantly if you're in a bigger group.
C. D.
Great old fashioned pub, no music yippee, friendly locals x
K. L.
Edinburgh traditional pub, recommended 5*!!!
I. T.
Legendary bar, great beer and lovely friendly staff
D. G.
A no frills proper pub, fans of Ian Rankin's Rebus series of crime novels will recognise this as being the the detective's favourite pub. Great drink and friendly staff and a relaxed atmosphere, well worth a visit.
S. B.
Love this place visit everytime we come to Edinburgh. Hope one day may bump into Mr Rankin. Fingers crossed x
R. H.
An understated, old fashioned Edinburgh pub, though close to George Street this is a million miles away from the slick and somewhat soulless experience of those hostelries.
The welcoming staff serve a small but very well chosen range of single malts from behind the bar, your standard beers and cider with 2-3 guest beers on tap. The Oxford comes into its own on a six nations weekend with a lively, friendly atmosphere and fans mixing happily.
K. H.
Traditional pub with a good range of real ales.
H. O.
Superb place
D. C.
Great bar, average Deuchars IPA.
r. d.
Outstanding small, beautiful, classic, friendly and lives up to all the expectations. No london pub can match it. None.
I. G.
Couldn't be more basic if it tried. Keeps the posers out I suppose. Good beer.
C. D.
Great old fashioned pub, no music yippee, friendly locals x
N. E.
It's the Oxford, you'll either love it or not
D. H.
A great little pub, not big inside but just like stepping back into time how an off street boozer used to be! 👍 Somewhere just to have a good pint and chat with a couple of friends next to a open fire with no hair and graces! Friendly barmaid. Worth a try for a drink and a bit of a rest from your day 👍
I. T.
Legendary bar, great beer and lovely friendly staff
S. D.
Old fashioned neighbourhood boozer with good service
r. e.
Loved being there the waitress was a very great gal and very knowledgeable about Rebus and Ian Rankin . We are Rebus fans and travel a long way to really enjoy our pint at the Oxford Ritva and Jim Elliott Canada
H. C.
Friendly little pub.
G. H.
Great little place with friendly regulars
J. H.
Magic. Small, dark, no telly or distractions and friendly locals
I. G.
Couldn't be more basic if it tried. Keeps the posers out I suppose. Good beer.
M. T.
We went here because Anthony Bourdain said it was his favorite bar in Scotland. Lived up to the hype! Great little place and nice staff.
A. P.
Nice place.
Decent selection of drinks.
R.
Went looking for this pub because of Rebus. Was not disappointed when we found it. Nice beer on tap and lovely atmosphere inside the pub, met alot of lovely people in there.
A. Q.
The Oxford bar is the Oxford bar. A unique bar for conversation and stories. A glue pot!
D. M.
Unusually for Edinburgh city centre, an old-fashioned (some would say old man’s) pub. That’s all it has to recommend it! Pint of beer & a gin and tonic £8.10 so not cheap.
P. S.
Small pub hidden in one of the streets of Edinburgh New Town out of city rush. Favorite bar of Ian Rankin´s inspector Rebus, compulsory stop for all fans of this scottish writer. Good cask ales and whisky, as in every scotish pub.
J. K. a. V.
A must for all Rebus fans but if you are not a fan, you might not enjoy the pub as much as the rest of us. It has a nice really local feel to it.
A. M.
I was dragged in by a Rebus fan. Very small bar, couple of real ales. OK. Think we spotted a few SMPs discussing the demise of Rangers, so might be a good place to come for gossip. If you're not an Ian Rankin fan, there seems little point, though.
M. H.
Great wee pub off the beaten track. Favourite pub of Rebus
m. c.
True to Ian Rankin's description in the Rebus books. A proper pub. No fancy pretensions, just a good, old fashioned pub with great beer.
T. C.
It's a must visit pub on the Edinburgh literary tour with Ian Rankin being a regular. Strange wee place but unique and worth a stop for a pint of Best.
E. D. D. I.
Immaculate little local pub.. We came here on our travels around GB from Oz.. because we were avid readers of Ian Rankin's, Rebus books..Though I imagined it slightly bigger.. we were not disappointed..friendly staff and mix of locals and tourists.. if I lived around here it would definatley be a favourite of mine cosy in the winter it would fill up fast..
A. N.
Authentic local pub. Try to leave your tourist self at the door and just enjoy. Unless you are a local. Oh and for Heaven's sake, yes, there is no wifi! Deal with it!
S. M.
Slightly disappinted with this place expected more considering the rebus books were writen their. Bar man had a dry scotish humour and weren't sure if he was joking or serious howevet still enjoyed the visit
C. E.
A lovely little bar had in the heart of Edinburgh. A must if you're a Rebus fan! Serves a nice pint of Eighty!
T. H.
Very traditional old style pub. No tv or music. You have to speak to each other. Great beer selection.
A. W.
It's Ian Rankin's local apparently, if you like a quiet drink and no loud mouths at the bar then this is the place for you, you will have to hunt the place out, as it's hidden out the way, but is a gem of a find - Cheers !
O. S.
Lovely little pub. Made feel very welcome. And good drink. A must visit.
J. H.
Ah the home of Rebus. Great little pub and not touristy at all. Locals bar in the front and cosy bit up/out the back. Felt very welcoming.
G. D.
Pop in whenever I'm in the neighbourhood. Basic but cosy wee pub with a good atmosphere. Never had a bad visit. Particularly pleasant when the fires lit.
M. H.
Best pub in town
T. B.
Cosy wee pub. There was enough beer on tap for me🤗. I’d guess they had five beers on tap. I’d better go back and count them.
S. B.
Unpretentious, atmospheric boozer in Edinburgh's New Town (not the stately Georgian mansions everyone knows, but the working class bit where the coachmen and grooms lived). And for those in the know, Inspector Rebus's favourite haunt.
H. I.
Fantastic place to visit if you are fan of Ian Rankin's Rebus
I. I.
Very stroppy woman works here. Never felt welcome for some reason. Also payed through the nose for extra ale due to the £5 minimum transaction credit card, then get berated and mucked around for seeking to use a powerpoint for phone. Otherwise, tip-top.
I. R.
Proper pub. Well-kept beer and friendly service.
A. T.
Went there after the Edinburgh Rebus tour, which I travelled up from Portsmouth to do, and I got a warm welcome from the locals and a signed Ian Rankin book mark which I really appreciated
K. H.
Traditional pub with a good range of real ales.

The prospect of a visit to old faithful Oxford Bar before heading to SMWS had me salivating for days beforehand. The day turned out to be hot and muggy so my longing for a nice cold pint of Deuchars IPA to quench the thirst was growing with each step along the cobbles of Young St. The front bar was busy with half a dozen regulars and my companion was sat alone in the back room, ales already waiting. A blissful hour or so seemed a certainty. Alas it was not to be!
The building next door to the Ox has been converted to an ‘Aparthotel’ drawing to the area groups of Stag and Hen parties. No sooner had I taken my first long quaff of the golden beer and in came a group of lads intent on making the back room their ‘pitch’ for the next few hours. The peace shattered, voices raised, thinking curtailed the beer seemed to have soured. A quick blether with a regular at the bar gave me the information that weekends at the Oxford Bar are no longer what they used to be. The short stay accommodation next door is suffocating the atmosphere from the old man, even if the till might be bulging a bit more. I still love the Ox but I might avoid a Fri or Sat evening for a while.

Perfect pint

Good beer, a taste of what a real pub looked like a century ago. Not recommended for young people, rustic and no music. Just beer and banter. A truly very old man's bar.

(Translated) A pub just for fans of John Rébus .... For other people, a friend's advice go your way because there is not much to see .... So what are we talking about here? a neighborhood bistroquet .... a very small thing with a rickety counter ... but in the end, what does it matter since the main thing is to get closer to the Rebus spirit ... So what could be better to understand his world than to go to his favorite tavern.
(Original)
