Reviews of The Scotch Malt Whisky Society
H. B.
Simply outstanding. Our friend is a member and we had drinks and dinner here. The main room is spacious and comfortable and has a big whisky vibe. The staff is very knowledgeable and can easily help you find your next favorite dram. I approached the bar to order drinks with my friend and asked the bartender about the possibility of getting something similar to a whisky my husband had recently fell in love with. The bartender thought for a minute and then reached into a deep display of bottles and pulled one from the middle like a magician pulls a rabbit from a hat! He was absolutely right - my husband loved it. They also made us feel very welcome - as if instead of first time visitors we were valued regulars. The food was a very nice surprise. The menu was well thought out and absolutely delicious!
R. B.
Gorgeous place, our server was INCREDIBLE. Very knowledgeable, made some amazing recommendations. All the staff were wonderful. Food was amazing, just an A+ experience.
P. B.
Absolutely brilliant tasting my wife and I really enjoyed the whole thing great food, and very nice and knowledgeable staff.
M. T. G.
Nice experience. Friendly welcome. Appealing atmosphere. We had a tasting with three different styles and a supper. (A vegetarian version was at short notice available.) The guide was very knowledged and engaged. Only one or two more short breaks for our questions would be desirable.
M. O.
Really good food. Fun place to find your favourite whisky.
P. W.
Wonderful selection of fine whiskys served by friendly, helpful staff in a relaxing environment. Knowing a member is the key to enjoying this experience. Glad I was able to enjoy it on this occasion.
O. T.
Great place for whisky tastings. Knowledgable, friendly and passionate staff, vast selection, unique concept with the whiskies being numbered rather than named.
M. B.
Came in for my brothers university graduation dinner, the food was great and the staff were extremely knowledgeable especially with all the different whiskies on offer. There is what seems to be an endless selection of different varieties all with different subtle Flavours and aromas. Will defiantly be back again.
A. S.
I went to the venue to have some food and try a couple of whiskies that I had seen on their club website. Despite the website showing there were plenty on bottles in stock the Queen Street venue did not have either. Surely one of the flagship venues should keep the bottles available on the website in stock. A bit disappointing.
C. D.
Very neat place to enjoy some scotch whisky. The concept is very neat and old school gentlemen’s-like club. The people were very kind, welcoming, and teach you a lot about scotch. Highly recommend hopping in for a few tastings.
K. W.
As usual, great service and exceptional food. Unrivalled knowledge on the whisky available with superb suggestions on specifics based on personal tastes.
J. L.
An acquaintance recommended this place back home (Australia) and this was well worth the visit. Cool atmosphere and the bartender was both friendly and knowledgeable. We had the 'maiden voyage' whiskey tasting and were surprised at the amount of whiskey poured, as well as the vastly different flavor profiles they had. Highly recommended for both seasoned and uninitiated to whiskey.
J. T.
Holy grail of whisky enthusiast. A club for Whisky lover with endless selections of single cask bottling of predominantly single malt whisky. Very knowledgeable and passionate staff to guide you through dram after dram of great whisky. SMWS is one of the most respected independent bottlers with very distinctive house style.
b. v.
Real nice atmosphere. Bar for non members downstairs with excellent whisky choice. Well served at restaurant, excellent dishes worth while. Top floor membersbar with great range whisky's
G. J. R.
Amazing tasting menu, allowing you to fully experience what all the fuss about Scottish whiskey is all about. They made the tasting menu vegetarian with only a little bit of complaining.
T. (.
I've wasted many an afternoon here over good conversation and good whisky with both friends and acquaintances. I fully recommend wasting away a dreary afternoon with both here as you will fully find yourself transported somewhere utterly remarkable.
C. P.
Been a member for many years. Two bottles of No 6 for my sons 40th from a North East River. Nectar.
M. H.
If you like food and whisky served in nice surroundings then this is the place to go. It used to be members only but now has a public bar on the ground level where the restaurant used to be. The members bar and restaurant have moved up a level. There's now a private tasting room on the ground floor and you can book the library room for private functions. The whisky here is excellent and exclusive but because it's single cask, once it's gone it's gone! The food is excellent whether you're having bar food or restaurant food with matched whisky. It's a great place to sit back, relax and spend and afternoon or evening drinking fine whiskies.
M. W.
Wonderful evening at the Scotch Malt Whisky Society at 38 Queen Street. Our party had our own private dining area on the top floor. The food was excuisite and it certainly lived up to its billing as Scotland's best restaurant. The whisky tasting was very enjoyable and each dram we tasted was thoroughly explained by the staff before serving.
P. T.
Wow. Just wow. A wee bit complex system for their whisky but for a reason. Don't look and think at the brands! Single cask whisky is much more than age and name. This is a mission to break the boundaries and enjoy the taste. Absolute treat. And totally affordable.
J. E.
Was obviously expecting the whiskey options to be amazing (and they were) but dinner was equally as impressive and delicious.
D. C.
In a league of it's own. Arrived on the night they had just won the award for Whisky bar of the year so there were generous free drams flowing. If you enjoy whisky this is the place to learn about Scotland through a warming amber lens. Flawless.
T. N.
What fun! An amazing selection of mystery Scotches. We had several.
W. S.
Great cocktails and there's a vast option for the whisky. I wish the staff on the first floor wasn't ignorant of the walk-in customers.
J. F.
Fantastic hidden gem. Every kind of whiskey you could wish for. Bar staff extremely knowledgeable.
i. b.
Nice place to visit. You need to be a member to enter. I went with a friend who was.
P. F.
A unique venue and a very interesting concept. Prior to the visit I did not know that the society purchase the casks and then bottle them themselves.
The tasting menu was amazing and just right to accompany the whiskey that our guide had picked out.
D. G.
I like it! Does good gins too.
C. M.
If you love your whisky then you need to join this club. Fantastic selection of different whisky available to try and buy.
The food is delicious and staff are very friendly and a warm welcome awaits everyone.
C. H.
Great food, great drinks and a relaxing and comfortable environment topped off with great, attentive service.
S. C.
An interesting place that is not your average whiskey place but certainly worth a trip. I particularly liked the fact they grouped whiskeys by flavor as opposed to the usual region which means nothing to me.
There are prices to suit all budgets and each at a strength to blow your head off.
J. D.
As guests of a member, we thoroughly enjoyed our tasting experience in the members' rooms upstairs
N. S.
Did not get to try the food but i was able to explore this place. Our host recommended this place. The bartender was very knowledgeable, not that i was expecting anything less. I had a dram of whiskey with couple of drops of water. Very Tasty.
S. W.
Wonderful relaxing lunch. Great service from knowledgeable staff.
s. d.
We had a very civilised afternoon at their festival in the park at Queen Street, interesting local foods and some great drams. The staff vere friendly and knowledgeable, plenty of seating and the music was just right.
We then went to the rooms themselves for the tasting menu. The food was wonderful, the service excellent and all very relaxed, whilst still being careful for Covid. The pairing of the whisky worked very well and again the staff were great to discuss the flavours with.
My only regret was that by combining the two events, we ate too much food!
K. D.
Great staff. Great venue. Great drinks. Highly recommended!
K. W.
Smws experience was fabulous. Enjoyed the staff, their recommendations...the whiskies and the dinner...All good!
J. L.
A wonderful talk and tasting of some cask strength whisky.
We were a little disappointed with the membership packages on offer, especially when it comes to the relabelling of famous whisky. How would you ever buy it again if you didn't know where it came from?
Delicious haggis, neeps and tatties!
G. C.
Friendly helpful staff and an amazing collection of single malt whisky. The whisky tasting sessions are well worth it.
F. K.
The approach to selling whisky by flavour profile and not region or age is refreshing and challenges you to try new things. The staff are knowledgeable, courteous, approachable and passionate. I have enjoyed every visit to the society so far.
L. M.
Excellent. Food great, staff knowledgeable. Brilliant all round experience.
N. M.
Tried Queen Street rather than the Vaults for a change but much prefer the Vaults casual relaxed atmosphere. Food was good although the menu was very restricted. Staff are very polite, attentive and knowledgeable.
D. M.
Whisky heaven. Delicious food in the members lounge. A bit pricy though.
S. K.
Amazing experience every time. You're well looked after as soon as you step through the door. Excellent food, great whisky
M. B.
Great spot especially if you have a membership and can access the upstairs area
L. J.
Very nice whiskey bar and good food as well
D. G.
Was a great visit. It was one venue on a guided walk.
叢.
The Whisky Society is amazing! The Queen Street facilities, staff, ambiance and of course the whiskies are top class.
S. B.
Members room is superb spot to grab a decent meal, dram and look out over the Firth of Forth.
A. B.
Great to be a member of this society and the best single malt to be experiences in this society - high recommend to join
N. T.
Heaven for whisky lovers ! Staff know their stuff and atmosphere is relaxed. Good food too - public bar is great but worth joining for member's room. Not at all stuffy and a good range of enthusiasts enjoying some of the finest whisky you can buy. They do other spirits too so not exclusive to whisky lovers. No loud music to spoil relaxed atmosphere either so perfect for a chat and a dram.
S. M.
Great place with incredibly knowledgeable and enthusiastic drinks experts. We stopped in by chance and had the best drams of our whole trip and we discovered some truly unique malts and an incredible Armagnac. We're gutted that we weren't able to buy a bottle to take home due to Scottish licensing restrictions and also we because we weren't members but we'll definitely consider membership for the future. If you're after something more personal than a standard whiskey tasting then this is definitely the place to go!
B. M.
Beautiful venue, very friendly staff. Lovely food and excellent whisky selection. The SMWS is generally a members bar only, however they open up the ground floor to the public at the Queen Street venue.
M. P.
A little daunting as there was no menu just the online magazine. Only two reasons to be a member of something: 1 to be left alone in your stubborn ways or 2 to be guided by an expert to extend your boundaries. Once we were assessed as the latter we were fully guided onto some great choices. 👍
A. F.
One of the best meals restaurants in Edinburgh, and two great bars!
N.
I absolutely loved it. Amazing service, fantastic food, and delicious drinks :)
R. C.
Great selection of whisky and a cozy atmosphere. If you're a Whisky Society member I recommend The Vaults venue in Leith. Has a bit of a nicer layout. They also host little events every so often too. We went to one which had loads of locally produced goods like different alcohol, cigars, tea etc. Was great! It's a good location too, just near the city center.
S. K.
Heaven for anyone who loves whisky or wants to learn about it. Huge selection, and if you're tasting new things, they keep the brands anonymous until you're done so you have a truly untainted experience. The staff there aren't just pouring but are extremely knowledgeable about their stock. This is where the true aficionados go - one of the customers there was a master distillery at a local operation.
R. F.
Dinner here was one of the most wonderful gustatory experiences of our longish lives. Whisky pairings with each course? Genius idea. Very creative menu with local emphasis. Service was spot on. Building is gorgeous. Just go here - you will have a unique experience and you will not regret it.
D. N.
Been a member for a few years and this was the 1st time at the location in Edinburgh. Had a table reserved for myself and my wife. Greeted by the delightful Emily. Karen who led the team at the restaurant couldnt have been more helpful. Food well presented and delicious. Retired to the bar and again well looked after by the bar staff. All in all a very good relaxed experience. Highly recommended.
P. i.
Wow! I almost left because I didn't think we could afford this place. Boy was I wrong. We paid 80 pounds (per couple) for an amazing experience!!! Non-members can enjoy the lounge and bar downstairs.
We had the fish platter, Tapas platter, Fish and Chips, Rump Steak Sandwich. All of which was outstanding. I highly recommend the Fish and Chips.
Four friends and we each enjoyed our own Cask Exploration. Such and incredible evening of fun. Wish all our friends could have joined us. Highly recommend. NOT a disappointment.
M. N.
Fascinating place for whisky lovers. Completely different to the normal bar experience, everything is based on flavour rather than brand. All the whiskies are single cask making them essentially unique
E. M.
Cute place, definitely go if you love whisky! Good experience
R. D.
The bar is for members only and obviously caters for lovers of Scotland's national drink. Prices are expensive but you are getting exclusive drams of single cask whisky. There is also a small selection of beers and wines available. Food choices are really good and again are at the top side of the price range but the quality is impecable. The downstairs Dining Room is open to the general public but you will probably need to book as it is very popular and again superb quality.
The venue is great if you want to impress clients and friends or just to relax in surroundings where you know you'll probably get a seat and have a good atmosphere.
D. M.
This place is a whisky-lovers heaven. They sell cask-strength, carefully selected, rare whiskies accompanied by crazy tasting notes for each whisky on offer.
In terms of the restaurant, if you like whisky this restaurant is a must. Absolutely loved the meal in this place. It was quite dear as we had to go with the three courses for £35 as there wasn't a cheaper option at the time we went, however it was well worth the money as we all loved it. I had the whisky flight as well which was a whisky matched with each course and it was superb.
Great homely atmosphere in the restaurant and the service was impeccable. Lots of thought goes into the meal and the presentation was fantastic, real fine dining.
Afterwards we retired up to the bar and continued to sample some amazing cask whiskies. Cannot recommend this place enough.
It is a members club so buy a membership or find a member to take you in.
M.
Great experience in dining, whisky and service. Well maintained and decorative inside. The staff are extremely friendly, knowledgeable and attentive. The food and dining is worth the visit, and one of the best experiences I've had at a restaurant.
J. L.
The best whisky selection around, with numerous exclusive single cask drams. Also a beautiful building and view.
K. M.
I've just become a member but so far the experience is excellent. The waiter misheard my order so brought out the wrong dish. Was starving so ate what they brought out but they couldn't have tried harder to make sure I was entirely satisfied with my visit regardless. The over-and-above nature of the visit, during a particularly busy night too, is what makes me quite excited to be a member for the next year. I look forward to many visits.
J. C.
The Scotch Malt Whiskey Society was located just 50m away from my Airbnb and me and a couple of friends decided to wander down and give this place a go.
The good thing to note is that you do not need to be a member to partake of their offerings although membership gives a 10% discount.
I found this to be a really cosy place with a small fireplace with a very knowledgeable server who was providing us with the particular taste of Scotch as we specified it.
It’s a good place to hang out with a couple of friends (or meet new ones) and just enjoy good Scotch and friends.
I. F.
Great place, good whisky
S. W.
Non member, but the non members area is great, very relaxing with friendly knowledgeable staff. Not a big drinker but have it on very good authority they have some very good and very varied whisky, just ask a staff member what they would recommend for your tastes. Also the limited edition batches have cool intriguing names that make me feel very happy as they remind me of the culture ships from Iain M Banks novels 😆😍
C. F.
Had a voucher for a tasting plus meal. It was very good, informative and generous amount of samples. Also been here for a family meal as my father-in-law is a member. The members only area restuarant are great. Really good food on both visits. Highly recommended.
F. W.
The place to go in Edinburgh for the most amazing selection of whiskies. There are areas exclusively for members and their guests but also a bar for non members. The staff are very welcoming and knowledgeable. Food at the bar was delicious.
A. S.
The best place for straight from the barrel unfiltered whisky. Snazzy bar. Brilliant and much underrated restaurant. If you love whisky and want access to whisky you will never taste elsewhere in a stylish environment then this is the place for you.
S. M.
The Scotch Malt Whisky Society is a great place to enjoy some amazing single cask, scotch malt whisky. If you are a whisky lover you really need to get down to the society.
There is a public bar downstairs but the members rooms are the best spot to enjoy a dram.
Can't recommend highly enough.
K. V.
A fantastic selection of whiskeys, spread across 3 levels. Brilliant and knowledgeable staff will walk you through some of the most exciting new & old whiskeys.
The selection of whiskeys changes regularly, so there's always a good reason to visit.
The top floor is members only, but it's certainly worth joining.
l. e.
Superb food, excellent whiskies. Friendly staff.
T. L.
What a fantastic experience! Single malt Scotch whisky that is cask-strength and just lovely - you better catch it while you can since once the bottles from each cask are gone then you may not find something quite like it again! There is a gorgeous dining room downstairs, or have tasty bar food downstairs. It's a fantastic members-only place, but it's open in August and on World Whisky Day if you want to check it out!
R. T.
The best and most interesting whiskies in Edinburgh, and the perfect place for long conversations. Cosy furnishings, beautiful views from the members' room upstairs, friendly staff, good food, never too busy, excellent value for money.
J. S.
Lovely bar. Staff are kind, patient, polite and knowledgable. Superb whisky. Superb!
P. W.
Has really gone down since new owners took over, seems a shame as it was very nice before. Some things don't need to change. The new public bar downstairs had a very loud drunk american tourist on my last visit, he could be heard all through the place. Not a nice experience. The level of service has also dwindled on my last few visits, have been a member for about 10 years and seriously considering not renewing the membership.
M. H.
Fantastic location. Quiet and reserved with a fantastic selection of whiskeys. Some wine and beer also available. On most occasions membership required or accompaniment. Multiple levels and split allow for a good location for business catch ups as well as social visits.
K. S.
Picking up whisky, for an online tasting. Cannot wait for venues to reopen, SMWS will become an location for mixing business & pleasure in the most wonderful surroundings.
D. S.
We spent several evening here. Fantastic place to relax and sip some single cask malts. Great big leather chairs and couches. The food was excellent. All their mixed drinks were made with whisky. We visited all 3 SMWS locations on this trip. Two in Edinburgh and one in London.
A. M.
Excellent welcoming service, fantastic whiskies and scrumptious food. One of the best spots in Edinburgh.
T. T.
I'm a regular visitor to the Members rooms of the Scotch Malt Whisky Society and as yet I've still to have any kind of poor experience.
The food is always exceptionally good, whether it be haggis, soup, sausages, burgers or even a morning bacon roll it's always well presented, very well made and always very tasty.
The drinks menu, well it is a whisky society, is brilliant with staff who are knowledgeable, friendly and always welcoming, i can't recommend this place highly enough.
C. C.
Beautiful old bar with a great selection of whiskies, however, there is room for improvement for the service received in the bar area. We were the only people in the bar and did not receive great service. We kept having to find a member of staff to ask for things and nobody greeted us after we sat down or asked we would like to order food or drinks. The bar tender saw us and then proceeded to disappear for 15 minutes. When she returned, she still did not approach us even though we were the only people there. We were then passed over to a male bartender who was also not friendly. He acted like it was a hassle to receive ice in our water glasses. All in all, I regret spending £150 purely because of the service received on a quiet Monday àternoon.
D. T.
World class Whiskey purveyor with an upscale atmosphere. Discover something with every visit.
A. P.
Attended a whisky tasting at the Queen St premises....... great tasting and the main course that followed was excellent.... I had the seafood platter.... well worth trying.... smashing single cask whiskies...... public bar area downstairs and members area upstairs...... various memberships available!!
G. B.
They are now open to non members. A beautiful building with a stunning staircase through the centre. Bar staff are amazingly helpful to help you find your perfect wee dram. They have an amazing wine list of unusual wines, that will spoil you for all others!
B. D.
If you consider yourself even remotely a fan of whisky then consider life incomplete until you have visited here. Both branches in Edinburgh are great but The Vaults in Leith has got the edge.
They do serve some beers, cognac and bourbon too. The food is also really good. Well worth a visit.
C. S.
This has to be one of the best places in Scotland to get a fine dram of whisky. The society has an absolutely massive selection of whisky and they are all fantastic quality, albeit a little expensive. They also serve very good quality food and the location is great, just a stones throw from Princes Street
A.
Lovely atmosphere, great whisky. Tasting event was well run with good "bar snacks" (actually a fairly large plate of food).
J. I. (.
You don't know whisky, but it's better if you know it.
J. F.
Delightful staff. They have forgotten more about whiskey than I will ever know. Walked me through a series of tastings. Well worth double the price. Note to self: Cast strength is not messing around :)
S. L.
Fantastic members bar. Great service from knowledgeable bar staff. Wonderful selection of whisky obviously but also really tasty food. Good value. Highly recommended.
R. A.
Great place to try Whiskey with an interesting concept in the fact you don't really know which distillery they've come from. The staff are really knowledgeable and the whiskeys good. Saying that, the bar itself lacks any kind of atmosphere and could be much nicer than it is.
S. T.
Whisky lovers are like kids in a sweet shop here in the members lounge.
G. H.
Queen street has a very different atmosphere to the Vaults
Where the vaults is relaxed old world gentleman's club Queen street is an altogether more modern and classy place. The bar still provides the same relaxed place to chill out and enjoy whisky and good bar food (although the steak sandwiches are sorely missed)
Dinner in the downstairs dining room is a great fine dining experience with some of the very best food in Edinburgh.
Also the full cooked Scottish breakfast is fantastic and comes with a matched dram.
R. S.
Very nice environment in the member room, good food and good service.
L. M.
If you love whisky or like me are just discovering whisky, then this is the place for you. You can learn so much from the staff, i'd say it's great to take visiting friends and i hear that with Christmas just round the corner, whisky cocktails will be on the menu. It's nice to be part of something in Edinburgh. I'd highly recommend it.
D. S.
Memberships available and not expensive. The whiskey tasting was informative and very fun. Haven’t had the food yet but the building is cozy and a great place for an after hours drink.
j. g.
Great flights & bottles (even for non-members!) in a lovely space.
F. W.
Food is bang tidy. Fresh ingredients, beautifully presented, very tasty. Not cheap but modern and great value nontheless. The most gigantic range of whiskys in the world and expert staff to advice. A lovely meeting place in town for coffee, lunch or networking. The acoustics could be improved - sometimes when it's quiet, one's conversation can reverberate around the room - but lovely decor.
D. G.
Great surroundings with excellent selection of whiskies. A real treat if you can afford it.
b.
Went here for my cousin's stag do. I was initially sceptical but changed my mind after attending!
Whisky was/is a very intimidating/daunting thing to get into! With water, without water, with ice, with cola, neat ect... The message I took from attending a whisky tasting session was it's all on you. Have it However you want it. Try it neat, try it with water see what you like. Initially the whole whisky world felt vast and filled with old guys who looked down there nose at me for not being able to pronounce auchentoshan properly. This place made that all disappear!
The staff are patient and helpful. Happy to point you in the direction of something new or something aligning with your tastes!
Plenty variety of whiskys! Can't speak to other drinks except for beers they stock some of Barney's beer which I love! And had a sour beer on draft which was a treat!
The food is amazing (the cheek of beef changed my life it's like a steak pie on steroids!)
If your completely new to whisky and want to get started in a tasting adventure or have drank whisky since birth this place will cater for you! Definitely worth a visit on a your of Edinburgh!
R. N.
I booked the experience tour and it was absolutely fantastic. Fairly basic information but the way it was presented made a big difference. Also the staff was very knowledgeable and helpful. I'll definitely recommend this for any scotch enthusiast.
s. w.
Fantastic lunch in peaceful surroundings only 5 minutes walk from the madness that is Edinburgh at festival time.
Went off piste with the wine list and tried a red from India. Wasn't disappointed.
S. M.
Great little venue whether you're a whiskey newbie or a seasoned drammer! Chilled atmosphere, nice staff... And my food hasn't arrived as of yet so watch this space for that one! Recommend.
K. N.
Does very good light lunches
H. M.
Ostensibly members only but members seem to be able to bring a good few pals along to the bar. I enjoy coming here for a bit of a change and an adventure through some interesting whiskies. Whiskies are listed by region and chosen on quirky descriptions which are spookily accurate once your tastebuds are warmed up. One of Edinburgh's best date venues but be prepared to squish up/wait for a seat/sit on a stool - it's always busy!
L. B.
Excellent meal, fantastic atmosphere and very nice whisky.
Book in advance. This is a busy place.
If your in Edinburgh plan an visit.
M. M.
Brilliant place to enjoy the whole range of malt whisky. The staff are incredibly well informed and can talk you through the amazing and daunting walls of whisky available.
Definitely worth a visit.
C. H.
Join the smws for a fantastic Whisky experience!
I have an SMWS membership through work and have been a number of times for meetings and dinners and have always had fabulous food and service. To buy the whisky you need to be a member and this also entitles you to drink in the bar but if you want to go for dinner then that is fine. Membership is about £100 and allows you to bring a guest along and is definitely worth it, if you like your whisky. There are two parts to the SMWS venue in central Edinburgh, a restaurant downstairs and the upstairs whisky drinking area. There is also the vaults in Leith which has a bar and shop outlet. This is relating to the Queen Street Venue as I have yet to visit the vaults.
Upstairs there is a bar with a LARGE selection of whiskies as well as a great selection of beers, wines etc. Assuming you can find a seat, grab the seat and pull out the whisky and food menu, lets start with food. The selection is very nice and comes out of the same kitchen as the restaurant down stairs. The mains are around £9 - £13 so very reasonably priced. The dining room down stairs has a set menu which is about £30 for 3 courses and the a la carte. EVERYTHING I have ordered has been fantastic I can assure you.
Now to the reason you go, the whisky. It's a very confusing menu if you don't know the system. The menu it split into the different regions, highland / speyside / lowland / island etc. Then the confusing part, they don't tell you the name of the distillery, only a number. The first part is the distillery and the second is the barrel number from that distillery that the SMWS has selected. There is no list anywhere obvious of which distillery is which number but many of the members have a "secret list" they can pull up to tell you.
The whiskies themselves are very good. The SMWS selects a number of barrels from different distilleries, bottles them and sells them but once they sell out, you will never get it again, it's the benefit and curse of the single barrel bottling. They have recently started tell you how much each dram costs which is nice, they range from £4.95 up to £33.50. You can also purchase a bottle of any of the whiskies you taste and enjoy at home.
The atmosphere is relaxed and cosy, the staff are friendly and super knowledgeable, the food is really very nice, but most importantly the whisky, while not cheap, is always great and allows you to experience whiskies you can't get anywhere else.....
S. M.
The great thing about being a whisky lover in Edinburgh is that the we get two SMWS venues!
Queen Street has the same huge menu of society whiskies, a decent selection of beers and a similar bar menu to The Vaults, however it is a different atmosphere to the Leith venue.
There is something lighter and more casual about Queen Street which makes it a great place to pop in for a drink, coffee or food. A fantastic escape from the madness when the city is busy however due to this it will get quite busy at peak periods.
I recommend everything about this place.
D. L.
An amazing experience, if you love or appreciate whisky then the society is a great place to visit. If you are lucky enough to be a member or know a member then the private upstairs bar is a must.
A. W.
Anyone counting themselves as a whisky fan should be a member of the Scotch Malt Whisky Society. Their unparalleled selection of unique single cask whiskies are constantly changing and the staff are very very knowledgeable and happy to make recommendations based on your preferences. The Queen Street venue of the private members club (they have another one down in Leith) is light, bright and at the same time cosy. It's a real oasis of calm from the hustle and bustle of Princes Street. Their bar food is outstanding too (try the burger or the haggis!).
H. K.
Nice lunch and great tasting flight picked out by staff
F. P.
The most impressive place to degust unique beverage. They have so many small editions and many distilleries are here . To finish our whisky trip across scotland it's perfect
J. C.
This was an excellent gift for my husband. The staff were very knowledgable, very personable and the tastings were great. The following meal was tasty and very well cooked. A wonderful day out.
A. C.
Welcoming atmosphere. Great sense of theme and intentional awareness of their clients.
Wise selection of malts and knowledgeable staff. Plenty time given for questions and sampling. Over all as wonderful an experience as I had hoped for
C. R.
Great whisky selection with friendly, knowledgeable staff.
B. H.
Great venue and an awesome whisky tasting event. Highly recommended
G. M.
Love both the modern smws branch and the original one in Leith. Go to Leith for old world atmosphere, to Edinburgh city centre for modern, comfortable glam. Staff are exceptional...particularly 'Alan'. Just have a pocket full of cash if you're wanting to try a few drams. Good quality doesn't come cheap...rightly so. Great place to take visitors to Edinburgh.
D. S.
They bottle all their own cask-strength single malt whisky from single casks, so the whisky is much stronger and distinct. They take their time to explain the differences too, creating a wonderful experience exploring the characteristics from one whisky to the next.
m. r.
Just had a great whisky tasting and excellent burger and fries. Very informative tasting with Francesco. Lovely ambiance . Definitely a good experience.
T. R.
Very nice, comfortable location with attentive and knowledgeable staff
G. B.
Drinks excellent (of course) food of top standard but make sure you choose from something other than the seasonal selection if you want a large enough portion to satisfy any degree of hunger.
D. C.
My goodness what a change! The improvements at 28 Queen Street are superb! The whole building has been transformed out of all recognition - and all for the good. The fact that it is now open to the public on the ground floor is a very welcome and overdue change. Well done to the team!
E. S. D.
Best whisky club in the world
g. b.
Good food, great whisky, too warm on Saturday because of the heatwave
C. M.
I'm a member at SMWS but there is a public bar on the ground floor where you can sample some amazing and unique whiskys and the food in the restaurant is just as good as the liquid in the glass!
A. R.
What a night, amazing food, fantastic service, great wine and even greater whisky!
S. L.
Having visited the vaults in Leith on my last visit to Edinburgh, I thought I would try Queen st. On this my 2nd visit. The first person I met there was John in the bar downstairs, and I would like to express my thanks to him in the help that he gave me, he is a credit to the society, and due to this I purchased a dearer bottle than I was going to buy.
W.
A fascinating experience for any fan of whisky. The concept allows you to drink without influence from names or brands (price is still hinted though). The result is possibly whisky in its most distilled form.
M. C.
Unbutton your tweed jacket as you appreciate a hint of crystalised honey and peaty heather blossom rolling around your tongue. Breath in the ashy barbequed lobster afternotes as you order your Fish & Chips from the bearded hipster barman. Always ask for recommendations.
J. F.
Wonderful pairings of food with scotch whiskey.uni
C.
Seriously love very this place. If you love a dram, you will too. Fantastic whisky with expert staff to advise and help you have a great visit.

They make the most delicious veggie haggis I've ever had and have some delicious whiskeys too.
J. H.
Quite a different atmosphere to the society's main venue - the Vaults in Leith. I think like most people I prefer the Vaults, but this is more conveniently located, handy for an afternoon dram amidst a shopping trip.
R. A.
Always superb food, excellent range of drinks and great atmosphere. If you aren't a member yet, why not?
M. S.

(Translated) An interesting choice of whiskey, which is based on flavors. Disturbing when you like to know the origin, the age, etc … but great advice from the server!
The starters to share are very good, however the quantity is not there for something described as in the title "family" it was barely enough for just 2 people I found.. 😕

Un choix intéressant de whisky, qui se base sur les saveurs. Perturbant quand on aime connaître la provenance, l’âge, etc … mais super conseil du serveur !

(Translated) Best whiskey and food
Membership whiskey bar. This store seems to be on the first floor even if you are not a member.
The second floor is nice with a very calm and mansion-like atmosphere. The 3 course seasonal menue costs £ 22 plus £ 8 and comes with whiskey for the appetizer, main and dessert respectively. The pairing with the food is very good, and the cost performance is excellent, so I definitely want to go there again.
There was also a delicious Edinburgh beer.

(Translated) As the name suggests, it was originally for whiskey club members, but now it is a restaurant that anyone can use. I was taught by the local people.
If you imagine a place like a pub lounge by name, this is quite different and it is a very fine fine dining that has been renovated from a Georgian mansion.
There seems to be a good course for lunch, but it is a la carte at night. The name and presentation are French, but the material is mainly Scottish.
We had scallops and ravioli for the appetizer and raspberry sauce for the main pigeon. Nothing to say, except that the pigeon was on fire.
A small amount of whiskey is served along with the amuse, but after that you can drink whatever you want.
Cheese is also available mainly in the UK, and you can choose whiskey that matches your cheese.
It was a wonderful restaurant that can be recommended for those who like whiskey as well as those who do not.

(Translated) If you want a taste of real barrel whiskey, this is the perfect place. We can say that there is something mystical in it, something only for the initiated, whiskey from the store will never taste the same again but it is worth tasting this "Holy Grail". (Translated) Unique place for tasting the best SINGLE CASK WHISKEY from all over Scotland, entry only for club members or their guests ...
Selected tasting bottles can be purchased - certainly recommend if you like something from the tasting, so do not hesitate. Prices from about 60 £ / bottle in barrel strength is a good price / performance ratio ;-)
Essential apart from whiskey is also a TOP KITCHEN, fresh ingredients and excellent presentation is a really interesting experience that you must not miss ...

Zásadní mimo whisky je i ŠPIČKOVÁ KUCHYNĚ, čerstvé suroviny a výborná prezentace je opravdu zajímavý zážitek, který si nesmíte nechat ujít...
