Reviews of The Scran and Scallie
T. S.
You won't be disappointed with the choice of food and the quality. Every item on the menu is like a party in your mouth. Freshly made and tasted fantastic. I had the scallops starter and the halibut, mussels and lentil main and was not disappointed. Wish I could have five plates of the scallops, it was that great.
Ambience was great, staff were lovely and patient with our questions and requests. There are dishes of the day and some of us ordered a starter off of that. They are knowable with prices and portion sizes.
Chef did a fantastic job with presentation, my photos using my mobile and lighting available in the venue does not do the dishes we had any justice, so make sure to check it out in person as each dish was fantastic!
Limited number of tables and you can tell the place is popular as the restaurant side was packed. The pub side had musicians which was a nice surprise to walk past to get to our table.
Prices are pricey but worth every penny for the quality and fresh ingredients used so perhaps book as a treat for special occasion or to surprise a lived one or for a company meal. Booking ahead is recommended to avoid disappointment. We are going back to work our way through the menu as we didn't get anywhere near the dessert menu unfortunately :)
Drinks menu has a lot of choice, so something for everyone.
I'm always happy to support local businesses and I hope this one is around for many years to come when I can return for another event in Edinburgh.

Not perfect, still a very great meal. We had the pork belly which was special off-menu and fantastic - tender and juicy. And the steak pie was good - it’s just the pastry shell, which looked handsome, seems a bit flimsy to me. And we love the cocktails, the Lemon Pie Martini was a highlight. Everything of the meal was well-presented.

If a hearty gastropub meal is what you are after Scran and Scallie is perfect. They are dog friendly.
Great variety of dishes. All tasted good.
The steak pie was good however it wasn’t crusted on the sides or at the bottom!
Service was great as was the vibe and the interior.
Portion sizes were large (especially the risotto)
Desserts were excellent too

Make a reservation now! Visiting on holiday and looked for a place to have dinner. We got so lucky with this one. The food was outstanding! We got the fish and chips and the meat pie. The fish and chips was haddock, very light and not greasy. The meat pie was the best I have ever had. The meat was so tender! Portions were very large. Wait staff was very friendly. We saw many turned away without a reservation, so definitely make a reservation.

Fantastic experience..
Waitress was totally amazing explaining every detail of the food on the menu to us and letting us know the specials..
Will 100% return and highly recommend

Great spot for a Sunday roast. There's only once choice, which is beef, but I have never had a better cooked slice of roast beef.
I'd also recommend trying the haggis starter which is really tasty.
It's better to book as it does fill up on a Sunday!
C. L.
This was the best pub grub I've ever had, all of the food was incredible and the service was brilliant too. I can't recommend coming here enough

Delicious steak pie and bangers and mash. We also enjoyed the sticky toffee pudding. Very nice ambience and friendly staff. Our favourite meal in Edinburgh.

My fiancé surprised me with an early birthday meal here and it was really fantastic. Food was very good quality and very well thought out. Brilliant cocktails and even the kids meals were amazing.
That's what made it extra special for us; it was extremely child friendly(even has a wee play kitchen for the kids and some toys) and the team there couldn't have been any nicer to them. Our waitress was especially good; didn't get her name but she was American and so lovely!! Nothing was too much trouble and we will definitely be back the next time we are visiting Edinburgh!

One of my favorite restaurants in Edinburgh! I've been to Edinburgh about four or five times in the last year for business. I've eaten at the Scran and Scallie at least five times. I take friends here, family here. I've never been disappointed. The prices are a little higher, perhaps, than your average pub, but the quality of this food is so much better than your average pub that it is definitely worth it. The menu here is imaginative, focuses on local ingredients. If you want a meal that highlights some of Scotland's best offerings, this is it. I always get an order of the oysters, and I'm not a big oyster guy, but the oysters here come ice cold, super fresh, and are some of the best I've ever had. The menu changes frequently, so some of my favorite dishes are no longer on offer, but the pub classics here are fairly set (fish and chips, bangers and mash, burgers) and will be some of the best you'll have in Scotland. Definitely recommend reservations. I've only once been able to get in without one, and I was a table of 2 and had to wait until nearly 9:00 p.m.

Great food. Simply great food. Main courses were very tasty but the puddings were fabulous. My wife had the Lemon Souffle and I had Vanilla Cream with Raspberries. Stunning flavours. Great last night meal for our mini break in Edinburgh.
M. R.
Superb food, great service and a lovely venue. Definitely try out their specials - the hare cannelloni and breaded monkfish we’re beautiful
G. C.
Family reunion lunch. Beautiful food in a nice setting (we were in the bar area), The main restaurant does look nicer. Sunday Roast was exceptional. Not cheap, but I would say it justified the bill with the quality of the offerings. Staff were very pleasant.
P. B.
Food is excellent, although a bit on the pricey side. For the expense you get high quality ingredients in slightly experimental configurations. All the dishes we had 'worked' and the portion sizes were just right. Service is attentive and swift. 5⭐

Came here as heard good things about it. My draught pint wasn’t very cold and didn’t taste great for £6. My starter of a fish cake with a fish bisque was very good. The burger was pretty disappointing. For £18 you would expect it to be pretty amazing. You can’t even choose how it’s cooked. Well done is as rare as they can go. The staff are very good and the place is Nice. Maybe I just ordered the wrong main.

An Edinburgh culinary delight…outstanding in every way, setting, service, food and drink. The food was amazing, great knowledge from Alex (waiter) to help with our choices…oysters, scallops, haggis, fish pie and steak pie were delicious!!
Will be back on our next visit…thank you Scran & Scallie for making our wedding anniversary even more special
H. C.
Not a cheap place to eat but the prices reflect the quality and service. Good selection on menu and good variety of drinks. A special place for a special occasion but also has a following, very busy advisable to book.
D. T.
Excellent food, really friendly staff. It is a bit pricey but the set lunch is well priced.
R.
Beautiful looking restaurant in a great part of town. Staff were efficient and friendly.
Food was good but I felt it a little overpriced compared to other places I’d been and what you get.
Overall was good and worth stopping off there if you’re in the area and nothing else takes your fancy.
D. J.
Amazing little hidden gem to get away from the bustle of the busy city streets. Food was incredible both flavourly and portion size. Manged to nab a little suntrap table and felt we could sit there all day long. Would definitely recommend and can't wait to visit again.
C. G.
Definitely one of my favourite places. Haggis neeps and tattie starter was so tasty! Had the steak pie but couldn't finish it as was full up from my starter. Great vibe and amazing staff.
w.
Overpriced for what you get, and a slightly rushed atmosphere. I think there are better alternatives locally for the value offered.
The staff were great however, very alert and attentive. Beer was good too.
M. N.
This was fantastic; the food was delicious, the staff were very friendly and accommodating and the restaurant has a great atmosphere. Would definitely recommend the gnocchi. Not loads of vegetarian options, but all of them are very good, with a separate vegan menu available.
J. K.
We went for lunch on Monday and had the set menu for £19, really good value given the quality of the food, with a limited choice. The place was extremely busy but luckily we had booked, so might be a good idea to always book here. The food and drink was well served and we managed to finish in an hour and a half having parked the car just along the road. We enjoyed the scran strawberry lemonade. We were served tap water in a bottle by default and given bread and butter for us both. We had to wait between servings but it was very busy. Thoroughly enjoyed it and this will be a favourite.
L. P.
Starters where lovely, loch fyne oysters and scallops. The rest was pretty average pub food, fish pie was "nice", ditto the rib eye. Great staff and service
K. L. H.
Im still dreaming of this fish pie 4 days later. It was absolutely amazing!
A. R.
Visited recently for an anniversary meal with my partner and left feeling we'd made the perfect choice for our evening.
We were shown to our table and immediately offered water for the table which isn't done nearly enough in my opinion.
The food was as you'd expect, full of deep flavour. I, like many others suggest you order the pie. It's incredible. The staff were perfectly attentive and polite, and the decor and ambiance nice and relaxed.
Prices are high, but so are quality, so push the boat ouy for that special occasion.
A. K.
Probably one of the best meals I had this year. My friend and I were very excited to visit this place on our last night in Edinburgh and we weren't disappointed. The service was impeccable and the pies were absolutely amazing. Would really recommend to anyone who is looking for a cozy dinner, great service and a good selection of whiskeys
D. T.
Nice, but expensive, for what it is. The service was great. The inside was lovely. We ordered grouse, steak and a wagu burger. The food was generous and tasty, but, for our taste, rather traditional, and not very exciting. I would also have liked more vegetables.
K. B.
Food always amazing but service lacking. No check back, no salt pepper or vinigar offered for fish and chips. Maybe im just common and like these with my fish and chips. Fish not seasoned. Overall lovely but not as good as previous visits
R. S.
Delicious food, lovely atmosphere and the staff were so helpful and quick. The pudding was the best sticky toffee I've ever tasted!
K. H.
Amazing food! Very tasty. Comfortable interior. Don't miss the scallops or sticky toffee pudding.
F. M.
An upmarket gastropub serving game. Excellent tastes. Though i like my grouse a bit more cooked. It was a bit too red (not even pink) for my taste - not mentioned in the menu nor advised by the waiter. Indifferent service with no engagement unfortnately. Thus 3 stars for this visit.

Certainly an experience, the Scran and Scallie is a place for an occasion. It has the Scottish wow factor, the upholstery and exposed brick, as well as wooden beams really give it pop. The atmosphere and decor to the incredible food and staff. Service was on point, drinks selection was great, food came all in good time, with no issues. Menus were traditional and concise with a good range of options. Facilities were excellent, from toilets to Child "break out" area (if you want to banish them) Prices match the quality, you can only imagine the time and effort for preparation within the kitchen. You really do get what you pay for. Can't wait to go back. Really impressed.
G. D. R.
Definitely worth a visit if you can get a table. Good food and good atmosphere. It’s definitely more expensive than other pubs, but you get to choose from a more curated menu, with seasonal and local ingredients. Mains ranged £15-30 when we visited.
Z. S.
We had an amazing time at The Scran and Scallie. Fantastic staff, amazing food and a fantastic atmosphere. A really lovely gastro pub that you have to visit.

I usually write reviews within 24 hours but I have to be honest, I've struggled with this one so I'm here nearly 2 weeks on.
Do you ever have a good experience but come away feeling disappointed but can't quite work out why? That's where I am with this one and it's left me confused.
I booked well in advance after researching places to eat, we were heading up from Yorkshire and this visit was for a special occasion so I wanted it to be right. Early communication with the restaurant put me at ease and I was sure I'd made a great choice. Great menu, good reputation, location right for us and more, what could go wrong?
Nothing really did to be fair, on the night of our booking we arrived at the allocated time and were greeted by lovely staff who promptly took our temperatures and guided us to our socially distant table. A table that had been picked out for us as being a nice one as I'd mentioned it was for a birthday meal in advance. A great start.
QR codes were scanned and menus poured over, all the while attentive staff brought us drinks and patiently awaited our order. I opted for the burger based on what I'd read here, my daughter ordered the kids version (but devoid of all "extras" because she's weird) and my wife the fish pie I'd highlighted to her as it's one of her favourite dishes and if I'm honest the main thing that had swayed me to book here.
Food arrived in a timely manner and I have to say it was great, while not a life-changing burger experience for me personally it was an incredibly good burger, the chips also deserve a special mention. A premium price almost justified. My daughter proclaimed her as the best she'd ever eaten. My wife, the reason for my booking, was a little disappointed. The fish pie was good, that's not in dispute, but that's all it was, a fish pie. No vegetables, no side, just a mash topped fish pie that while "good" wasn't anything exceptional to the point of it being a lesser version than many she's had at 1/3 of the price.
For the price paid I expected a level of "luxury", scallops, king prawn, a decadent saucing, Joël Robuchon level mash atop the pie... some veg on the side. I wish she'd ordered the burger.
On to pudding.
I'd ordered a cake in advance. At £7 per person it seemed like a fairly reasonable addition to the event and, in association with the Happy Birthday message on the table, an extra touch to show I'd tried to work with them to make it a special night. Unfortunately my daughter managed to scupper my plans and ordered a sticky toffee pudding before I could confirm when the cake could be brought out, no problem, it was a good example.
The cake came, minus the singing ceremony due to COVID, but was beautifully presented with a birthday message on. We opted to take it back with us to enjoy later (it was so sweet that we ended up putting it in the bin - white chocolate and lime for reference, I thought it might be more balanced, the frosting was insanely sweet).
The bill arrived and, with service added, came to a little under £100 - that's for a kids burger, an adult burger, a fish pie with no veg, a beer, a glass of wine, a sticky toffee pudding and a £21 cake.
Did we have a £100 memorable meal out that's comparable with others we've had in the past at that level? I don't think so. Was it a nice meal and experience, most certainly.
The thing that's niggling me most is something my wife said a few days later I think... "it was lovely but don't you think it was a lot like the Côte experience we enjoy sometimes?" - it's niggling me because she's kind of right, even more so that we ate at an "early bird" time slot.
It was lovely, it truly was and cost wasn't an issue, it was a special occasion, I would have happily spent double. The issue is value vs experience I think and that's where it fell a little short for me.
I wouldn't go back but at the same time don't fully regret the visit and I wouldn't try to dissuade others from going there. I'd maybe just avoid the fish pie and the special order birthday cake :)
K. M.
Ate here with 7 friends on a visit to Edinburgh. The majority of us had the roast dinner which did not disappoint. The roast potatoes were amazing, cooked in duck fat for optimum flavour, the veg was cooked just right, and the gravy was out of this world! Worth every penny in my opinion. Shame I don’t live close enough to visit again soon.
Only down side was that they don’t offer a veggie option, not a problem for me but for some of my group they could not enjoy the roast.
E. T.
Wonderful ambience, the most delicious haggis, oysters, steak pie and sticky date pudding. Drinks and service were fab too. Thank you.
S. S.
I almost feel bad for writing this but.... It didn't meet the hype. It was busy as always and I managed to squeeze a reservation in at 9 on a Tuesday night for 2. Even the cab driver on the way over wowed at the fact that the owner had Michelin stars and he had wanted to be a chef here. As I walked through the entrance choking through cigarette smoke I was greeted by a nice hostess who took my reservation and seated me and my wife promptly. Our waiter took our drink order, later delivered our drinks, and then took our food order in a quick enough fashion. About 30 minutes later we saw our waiter again with our steak pie, fish pie, and chips. The presentation was AMAZING, all the food is beautiful looking. The chips are thick but fried perfectly and the kitchen took the time to temp probe my fish pie. Sadly the fish pie was OK...it's not that it was bad, but it was so overly rich that it just seemed unbalanced. Chunks of salmon, white fish, shrimp, and hard boiled egg are delicious but just so rich... Maybe this is more a critique of Scottish cuisine... I don't know. My wife's steak pie was more disappointing... Although the crust looked like something out of a painting, the filling just tasted so pedestrian. I'm from America and we have these 1 dollar microwave frozen pot pies... If those rated a 3/10 this was a 6/10... I don't know.. The flavors just didn't seem complex to me. I think overall the wait service was rather lacking in the sense of checking on the table, and the pies were rather meh, but that really could just be a nod towards my lack of fondness to Scottish fare. Overall, the restaurant was very nice with lovely water closets and the staff was nice enough. One of the big reasons I still gave 4 stars is that the prices reflect what you are getting. I didn't pay 30 pounds for my fish pie, I paid 16. For the size I feel it was worth about 16, it just wasnt anything to write home about.
Tl:DR fantastic example of Scottish food with decent service and decent prices. Don't expect this to be the greatest meal of your life.

Went for breakfast today. 3rd time there for breakfast. Had full breakfast and my daughter had Eggs Royale. Nice and relaxed on a Sunday morning. Enjoyed each time we have been. Breakfasts here are delicious.
Have tried the Eggs Royale and full breakfast. Worth going.

Went for Sunday roast today. Never had before at The Scran and Scallie. Enjoyed it, large plate of roast beef and all the trimmings. Had sticky toffee pudding with ice cream. Well worth it. Place was busy at lunchtime 13:00.
T. W.
excellent food! i opt to choose the set menu that day! the main course pork belly should be awarded with michelin, the taste compliments with all the ingredients on the plate! the pork was soft and well done.
P. B.
Family&dog friendly restaurant. Came based on the recommendation of our friends. Great suggestions. Kids food was excellent light breaded fish and chips. Grown up food also excellent. The cheesy mash crust on the fish pie was just right. Good selection of beers to choose from. Best bit is a little alcove where kids can be put to watch a bit of telly while you can get on an enjoy your meal.
A. B.
Can't rave enough about this spot. Great atmosphere (relaxed), awesome waiters and service, and incredibly delicious food! Thank you for making us feel spoilt on our anniversary! The wine is a little pricey but other than that, it's a must for your stay in Edinburgh. Book early to avoid disappointment.
P. B.
We were on a short break from Northern Ireland and booked this based on website and reviews. This more than lived up to the reviews and the staff were very friendly, the food, service and quality was first class.
H. S.
Delicious! We had an amazing meal - highly recommend the chicken liver parfait, grouse and blue cheese gnocchi. Would definitely recommend if you’re looking for good food in Edinburgh.
Z. M.
We had such a lovely time there. One of the best restaurants I have been to this year. From the lovely staff that was so nice and accommodating to our puppy, to the delicious food and the cosy ambiance we just loved it.
The pumpkin soup was scrumptious and so were the (bit expensive but well served) scallops! The pork belly was also delicious, it was all so good that it made the sausages and mash seem just "okay" I'm comparison bit honestly it was just really really fresh, well presented and tasty food all around!!!
A. H.
Great food, super service and good atmosphere. On our list to return to when next in Edinburgh. Thank you.
A. K.
I enjoyed our dinner here, everything was tasty and also nicely presented. I like that they don’t have too many things on their menu, you won’t get lost between choices. Still everyone will find something interesting on the menu. The place can be quite busy so you definitely need to book a table in advance. Staff is very friendly and the place has a nice atmosphere.
E. T.
Nice place, good representation and good service. Though overall I think the restaurant is very overrated. During our stay in Edinburgh, we had a much better food in any other pub around. It didn’t surprise, very mediocre food especially taking into account what they ask for it. Not a great value for money.
S. M.
An amazing restaurant in a great location! Every aspect of it was amazing, including the price, service, and most importantly, the food. Our waiter was one of the friendliest I've had. I highly recommend the strawberry cheesecake and the beef burger. A very high recommendation to this amazing restaurant.
M. F.
Staff is amicable and the place looks lovely, but I thought the food was not very well seasoned. Nice variety on the menu, though. Highly recommend the Terre du Sur rosé :)
N. J.
An excellent meal--the best I had in several days in the country--along with kind service in a nice space. Great spot.
L. S.
Food and service here was excellent. We loved it and cant wait to come back again. Relaxed and easy going atmosphere.
A. S.
Nice spacious gastropub. Fantastic service. Food is really good, high quality ingredients. I lived in London for 7 years, but this place can beat any London gastropub. The best fish pie and Bloody Mary!
H. T.
Great service, really tastey food. Only thing to take away from experience is that the seats we were at had a smell of dogs.
K. H.
This restaurant was amazing!! Jack was our server and he was excellent! I’m a notoriously picky eater and I enjoyed every single bite from the items we ordered (haggis starter, fish &chips, and beef sausage and mash)
d.
Great tasting food with hearty portions. Really adept service for serving courses and generally keeping our party (of 12) happy. Helpfully rearranged tables to accommodate our party of 12.
Pretty relaxed atmosphere and certainly gastropub feel to the place
A. L.
Big tip: go hungry or share as the portions are huge. Everything we tried was tasty but we really struggled to finish our mains after the very generous portioned starters. We chose the pear tart tartin which allowed us 15min digesting space! Phew!
b. k.
The food is excellent, and the price-to-quality ratio is beyond belief. Being a member of the Kitchin group, I guess that's what you'd expect but still.
The waiters were very friendly, and even gave us tips for where to watch a match (Cro-Eng) given that we're Croatian.
Pro tip: try the haggis. It's the best one I've ever had.
D. H.
Having been to The Kitchin I was looking forward to trying Tom's gastropub. I enjoyed my meal but felt bloated by the end. To start we had the Pigs Ear Goujons, and whilst they were crisps and enjoyable I felt they lacked flavour; in hindsight I wish we didn't have starters and just concentrated on the main course. This is because the main courses were excellent. I had the Ham, Egg & Chips (something that sounds so simple on the menu but the name didn't do it justice) - the Ham was slow cooked and on the bone; very tasty and not nearly as salty as I was expecting. The egg was excellent; the white had been separated and scrambled with wholegrain mustard, whilst the silky runny yolk sat on top ready for dipping. I'd definitely recommend this dish to anyone who likes mustard with their ham. My wife had the Fish & Chips which had a tasty batter. For dessert we had the Raspberry Jam Bread & Butter Pudding - the most enjoyable part of this was the sorbet as the pudding was quite stodgy (one criticism would be the dessert menu which wasn't very summery). This was washed down by 3 good tasting ales (for me) & a couple of great fruity mocktails (for my wife). Overall I'd recommend the Scran and Scallie, but I'd also suggest sticking to the large main courses and great drinks.
R. A.
Incredible food and superb service. We had a great explanation about the Gin menu and enjoyed the Scallops, Crab, Haggis and Steakpie so much. Simply great classic Scottish Cuisine that I highly would recommend!
T. D.
Brilliant food as always, the pie has got even better since last time I came. We loved the chocolate torte and the waiting staff really made it a great experience.
D. S.
Enjoyed a delicious meal here on New Year’s day with a somewhat delicate party from the evening before..!
I had the ham, egg and chips which was fantastic; served in a deconstructed fashion with eggs two ways, with tarragon and mustard, ham on the bone and chips you could wedge a door with. Fantastic meal and will definitely be back next time I’m in town.
Highly recommended.
P. E.
First time in Edinburgh with my girlfriend, we went looking for a good fish n chips, and we weren't disapointed ! They managed to get us a table, even though we hadn't booked any, and the food and service were great. Many thanks, we highly recommand the place !
W. F.
Really interesting take on some classics plus some amazing originals. All really tasty, super presentation, and fantastic service. Not to mention the great draft beers, quality wine selection, and solid range of whiskey. One of the best eating spots in Edinburgh.
W. J.
Food and service amazing. Bone marrow v good but fish cake on specials was even better. Pie was delicious, left very full and happy. Would go again.
M. R.
Fantastic quality food and service here! Don't hesitate to book a table! Attentive staff and the food is just incredible! Bone is a must try.
G. S.
The food and drinks were exquisite and the atmosphere was relaxed without feeling rowdy. We visited for dinner, however, looking at the weekend brunch menu as well as the lunchtime menu I’m sure that we’ll be returning again. The service was fast and friendly without being too overbearing. We would fully recommend to anyone whether they were looking to enjoy a dinner to celebrate an occasion or just want a casual brunch on a Saturday morning.
S. G.
We came in without a reservation and they managed to find a table for us. Greatly worth it. Friendly service, delicious food, enough vegetarian options for me.
M. C.
Negroni - ok, not strong
Food - decent, great quality, nothing fancy (steak pie, fish pie and 2 sides: chips & carrots)
Wine - 500ml merlot, good temp & glass
Coffee - strong, single & dbl same price
Service - great service, very polite and friendly
Covid - one way system, clean tables, v good
Price - £110 for two (inc tip)
J. C.
Recommended by my airbnb host. Had to have the spring risotto. Fresh veggies with creamy sauce. Waiters r friendly and the atmosphere was very nice, many local families on Sunday and apparently they ran into acquaintances a lot LOL
N. P. B.
Don't be put off by the "trendy gastro pub" label on google maps. This place does amazing food. Gets very busy, but definitely worth the hassle.
M. W.
This was fantastic, we had one of the best Sunday Roast Lunches I have ever had, excellent wine and truly outstanding service, the cheese board paired with the port was brilliant, thanks to all of the staff for a wonderful experience.
S. D.
Had a fantastic meal here - smoked mackerel salad was good (portion slightly large?) but the highlight was the fantastic steak pie
J. P.
Fur coat no knickers - the food was pretty good, the Guinea foul dish was delicious- however the oysters weren’t fresh and the staff were rushing to get us out. It was a important meal for our team and we did not to fully relax. It’s also in a pretty bad location- I wouldn’t come here from central to visit again. I don’t like being rushed, being kicked out- weird vibe for a Tuesday. Not again from me
K. K.
Delicious food, friendly staff and great atmosphere. It's not cheap but it's not stupidly expensive either. We went for a mid week dinner with friends and it was lovely. I would definitely recommend it!
D. K.
A bit mixed feelings - great food, not so great beer; i expected a bit more based on the other reviews, but in the end it we ate well !! 🥳🥳

We've enjoyed a few wonderful meals here. Kitchin's attention to detail shows in every plate, the drinks selections are superb and the staff were very attentive. We did have a couple of order mix ups and confusion regarding table size but we were a large group so I'm happy to look past it. A lovely place to stop for a drink too, even if you're not eating.
C. H.
Great restaurant and a wonderful meal. You must have Ham and Eggs (not pictured). You will not regret, but you will be very full!
A. G.
Fabulous food and service. The steak pie was a visual treat and tasted superb. I would really recommend a visit.
M. K.
Great gastro-pub. Good atmosphere and nice selection of both traditional pub fare and healthier options like the grain salad with grilled chicken. Super friendly and great drinks! Cheers!
H. R.
Very average. Not a gastro pub as advertised. Food was not bad but certainly nothing special and definitely overpriced. Unsure why people keep coming back to pay these prices.
J. W.
Always great, staff so friendly, food exceptional, drinks tasty.
e.
Man I miss this restaurant. I ate here about 6 or 7 times in the week that I was staying nearby. I went through nearly every meat dish they had. Everything was an absolute 10/10
K. D.
Food was excellent. Never had a souffle and this one pictured was amazing.
J. W.
Great little restaraunt. Not fancy but friendly, wecoming and serving some great and unique food. Fish pie, meat pie, fish cakes, ham on the bone and more.
L. V.
Staff was very friendly and welcome. Food was amazing especially Ham & Egg, the Pie. Love it
K. H.
Visited for dinner and everything was delicious - especially the haggis entree. Try it - you won't be disappointed!
K.
A great buzzing atmosphere with delicious wholesome food. Every item on the menu was well thought out with its own special twist, and presentation was impeccable. The chocolate mousse was amazing so be sure to save room for dessert.

We had been looking forward to this meal all day and we were not disappointed. We expected to pay around the £200 mark for the meal for the three of us, sadly our son has not eaten child portions of anything for some time and this gets expensive. The expectation was not far off, nor do I begrudge the establishment for their prices. I think they are totally fair for the quality of the overall experience.
Food is of excellent quality, staff is friendly, and service is spot on. The atmosphere is friendly and informal, and most importantly in February, warm. Our server took great pleasure in explaining the specials to us, I would happily have eaten them all but we had specific gastronomic objectives (well, my son and I did) and although the Monkfish sounded awesome, we were going to a specialist fish restaurant the following day. (also reviewed) which was an unfortunate disappointment.
We ordered beers (a superb IPA each) which were provided promptly, and my son's apple juice arrived with actual apple segments in. This was a nice touch, and a comment on it resulted in a little joke from the staff, further building the rapport between establishment and guest. It's the little things that help, others should take note, this is how you treat your customers. By the same note, nothing felt forced at all. As I said above, service was spot on.
For starter, as this was my first trip to Edinburgh (or indeed Scotland) since the 90s (where I was only present to play a gig out of the back of a lorry), I had "Haggis, Neeps and Tatties" to start, (that's haggis, swedes and potatoes for the uninitiated) which was truly excellent. A silky smooth swede puree with a ring of finely sliced and fried potatoes (basically crisps) and a haggis bonbon. All of this was perfectly seasoned and very well put together, even my wife (not a fan of offal at all) really enjoyed it. She had the starter special which was a celeriac and pear tart. Perfectly seasoned, exactly the right level of sharpness, with beautiful pastry, and something I will be having a go at making at home. Presentation wise this had the appearance of a savoury walnut whip.
For our main course, the choice for the men at the table was simple. We had been looking forward to having the steak of the day, which on this particular day was a rib-eye. My son is a big fan of steak, and has high standards which were met, easily. Served on a bed of spinach, with an excellent peppercorn sauce and really really good chips that were what most chips want to be when they grow up. Can you tell we liked it? My wife had the steak pie, which came steaming hot with a bone sticking out of the top. This is placed so that you lift the bone and the marrow falls back into the pie filling. My one criticism of this dish, is that it does not come with its own side of mashed potato, we did however order this separately but didn't need nearly as much as a full portion. I will forgive this omission on this occasion, because it was so good and had that extra element of theatre. We polished all of these dishes off amid "mmmmm" and "ooooh this is excellent" but there was absolutely no need for additional conversation, there was however the occasional superlative eye-rolling as we stuffed ourselves with exceptional mouthful after exceptional mouthful.
Desserts were exactly what you need after all of that, tasty, fun, and capable of finishing you off. The choice was simple for us, I had the sticky toffee pudding which I find to be a good yardstick for dessert quality, my son had the chocolate mousse with marshmallow and milk rocks, and my wife had the panna cotta with rhubarb.
All of this was exactly how you'd want each item to be, the wobble and mouth-feel on the panna cotta was absolutely perfect, the sticky toffee pudding was of course sticky, somehow stodgy and light at the same time, and very enjoyable. The chocolate mousse was very very rich, but a sufficiently light texture and the "milk rocks" were like little chunks of a well-known white chocolate confection.
Two thumbs up, stop debating, eat here.

Great food & environment. Top quality service. Walked into here on the recommendation of a friend and was not disappointed.
Seafood is fresh, with all preparation enhancing natural flavours. Really well presented and knowledgeable servers.
Strong recommendation! Check it out.
K. P.
Service wonderful, lunch special three course meal great value and just delicious! Made our trip to Edinburgh very special!
R. W.
Such great food, really friendly staff. Would highly recommend the steak pie!
O. L.
Super friendly pub. Great Sunday roast and sticky toffee pudding!
K. W.
Delicious fish and risotto, friendly and accommodating staff. Busy spot but cosy and not too noisy. Worth going out of the way for.
R. I.
I've been fortunate to visit many fine restaurants, some of them even have stars from a well known guide. I planned our visit here several weeks in advance because of some good reviews and to accommodate friends who prefer gastro-pub to fine-dinning. The staff were professional, courteous and attentive (5 stars). The food was satisfactory however as others have said, feels over-priced and leans heavily on the reputations of its owners. I would try other restaurants in the area before returning.
C. J. F.
Truly an exceptional meal!! Best fish and chips I’ve ever ever ever had AND if you’re in for fried haggis this is your place. My husband wants to return tomorrow 😂
C. S.
We ate at the Scran & Scallie on Saturday and every single thing we ate was fantastic. The manager Alex (?) made us laugh and made the evening entertaining. He was very knowledgeable about how everything was cooked and gave us great advice on food & drink combinations. The highlight of our trip to Edinburgh. Thank you for a lovely meal.
A. M.
Good pub vibe and decor with a great menu. We had a wonderful dinner and the bartender was very helpful in picking out a couple whiskies.
Highly recommended.
W. L.
Not so astounding. Burgers, fish and chips, and artichokes were just all right. The tasting menu looked like a good value and worth a return trip. Maybe that will boost my rating!
s. a.
What an amazing experience. Excellent & interesting meal. Great service. Highly recommended
M. R.
You may find yourself waiting half an hour to an hour for a table, but the wait will almost definitely be worth it. Superb food along with a generous range of ales/whiskeys and wines. Could be more vegetarian options. Staff very accommodating.
d. s.
First time we are trying gastropub food and we were really overwhelmed by the huge serving. We had the scran and scallie fish pie, which is pretty decent. Next time maybe we go on an empty stomach!
D. S.
Excellent experience. I tried the steak pie which was a huge portion and absolutely delicious. Recommend getting chips with it to soak up all that delicious gravy. My wife had the fish pie which was also delicious and very filling. Service was great, location excellent, highly recommend.
E. H.
Excellent food and friendly staff! Highly recommend the bone marrow starter and I look forward to returning.
F. F.
Great lunchtime feast with great service. The ham hock ravioli and pea soup was the standout dish for me.
L. E.
Love this place: spacious and not noisy, even when it’s busy. The staff are very friendly and helpful. Good selection of wines by the glass.
We had the set lunch, as it’s good value for money and allowed us to try 6 dishes between 2 of us (including pigs tails, which we would otherwise have shied away from). Then the following day we returned for dinner.
My only negative comment is that the sausage & mash doesn’t come with any other veg: I’d prefer less mash and, say, a portion of peas. I want a dinner to be “complete” without having to order sides, and think that £4.75 for a side order of veg is expensive.
S.
Really nice food good service but found it to be a bit expensive for a gastropub . Three course meal for 2 plus 1 1/2 drinks each - 102 pounds 😒
E. T.
Frankly my favorite restaurant in all of Scotland. Fish and chips and scallops were fantastic. Good drink selection. Homey atmosphere.
I. C. L.
Give yourself a little treat and come here. Its so good and will not disappoint - also, they’re mocktails are 👌 and thats a rare thing.
S. D.
Brilliant meal in a lovely setting. Reasonable price given the quality of food on offer.
J. O.
Amazing food, fabulous French red wine and super friendly staff.
B. F.
Ham & Eggs like you've never seen them before, and oh so good. Very much like a relaxed restaurant than a gastro pub, with excellent and organised staff. Every bit of our meal was faultless, would definitely return for a special occasion. Even the £8 coconut rice pudding felt worth every penny.
A. G.
Did you really go to Scotland if you didn't try haggis? I feel like my perception of haggis is probably skewed by trying it here first, but it's friggin' good. I had expected it to taste more like a paté, but it's kinda like a richer meatball. The seasonal smoked haddock was also incredible, perfectly cooked so it flaked naturally.
Service was excellent, and the servers paid great attention to me despite being just a solo diner. I was tempted to come back here for dinner the next night so I could try more items on the menu!
R. M. J.
If you like mediocre food and lame service...then this place is NOT for you. The food is amazing, staff was very helpful and friendly! If there is one place that you should have dinner or lunch in Edinburgh this is it.
J. B.
Simply amazing. Superb food and one of the best service in Edinburgh.
L. W.
Beautiful restaurant, very professional and friendly staff.
Food was decent however, below expectations considering the price. When I found out it was owned by one of the celebrity Chefs, I was actually quite disappointed about the food. In short: great service, average food, celebrity prices. I won't be rushing back. X
M. D.
Just an excellent spot for a great meal with friends and / or family. A well thought out menu with a first class opportunity to find your go to favourite. The one you are most likely to order each time you visit. Mine was the steak pie. Sounds boring but I have been on a quest to find the best. I am searching no more. A great crust that is unique. The bone in the centre of the pie with marrow gravy is a unique an extremely flavourful touch. Definitely a place to add to your list of locals. The Michelin starred Tom Kitchin's expertise was evident throughout. Prices are very reasonably for the service and quality if food, a gastro pub like no other, a gem in Edinburgh's Crown of great restaurants.
A. D.
We had incredible food and drinks here. I specifically loved the steak pie. The staff were friendly and helpful. I would highly recommend The Scran and Scallie.
B. K. C.
Great atmosphere and informal service, however from the food served, I find it hard to understand the hype and recognition the place have received
T. L.
Outstanding food. Friendly service. The smoked haddock and kedgeree was incredible. The ham, egg and chips was spectacular and not a little surprising. Well worth the journey and price.
J. J.
The most uncomfortable chair ever. The service was poor and the waiting staff appeared to be very inexperienced. We waiting for our drinks order over 15mins. The table next to us that came in after us were served their drinks before we got ours.We waiting aroud 20 mins for someone to take our desert order. The food was nice though hence the 3 star rating.
A. B.
Great warm and cosy atmosphere. The staff were friendly and made great recommendations of the menu. All 3 course we had were very tasty with great portion sizes. Especially the desert with the recommended drink. Will be returning!
S. D.
Food was outstanding, but a couple of communication failures between front of house and kitchen.
G. Y.
Always friendly, and always good food. Solid range of draught and bottle / can beers to choose from. Very child friendly - have a separate menu for the wee ones, and dug friendly as well! If you're looking for a meal in Stockbridge, definitely recommend you hit this up for a sampling of classic Scottish cuisine
A. C.
If you want a classy take of the Scottish Pub experience then go here. EVERYTHING was delicious.
M. G.
Good food and really friendly service. But felt it was a little overpriced for what it was - yes it's high quality pub food, but have had as good elsewhere. The standout was the service - our waitress was so genuinely friendly. So 4* thanks to her!
R. W.
Excellent experience. Lovely food and really attentive and friendly waiting staff. If I had one small gripe, it would be that there was no vegetarian main on the set menu. However the veggie burger on the main menu was brilliant and the chips were to die for. Will be back!
K. J.
Tasty and beautifully presented food. It's very, very busy in here. Make sure to call for a reservation otherwise it's an hour wait.
N. L.
Cute little gastropub. The food was amazing, the steak pie is definitely worth trying. 100% recommend
y. k.
Good food and nice ambience. Very friendly and knowledgeable staff
P. R.
Food was good staff very good . I did have to say that my coffee was luke warm twice as they seemed to heat up the cup rather than the coffee on the second request. I know they don't want to scold you but coffee luke warm ! Sorry but one of my pet hates. I would go back again as food was very nice thank you.
K. N.
Amazing food! Great service from all staff! Overall it was a great experience.
A. B.
Beautiful food and amazing flavours. Great staff; very friendly.

I was pretty excited to try here. We had a voucher for Castle Terrace which was running out and so made a booking.
My first impression was the service was excellent, very friendly, attentive and lovely welcome. My second is whoever had arranged the tables is not entirely sure what 1m looks like. Pretty overcrowded.
Having looked at the menu, there was nothing much jumping out. The gazpacho and foccacia sounded nice as a starter but decided to go with mains and a dessert and we ordered a bottle of the Auzzie white.
The cost of the mains in this "gastro pub" vary, £14 for sausages and mash, £18 for a wagyu burger, £24 for cod. We got a burger and cod. The cod doesnt come with anything bar some peppers and a smear of pureed fennel, so we had some mashed potato as a side. Thankfully so as the portion was pretty small. I had the wagyu burger. It was soft wagyu, cooked medium to well, tasty crispy fries. I don't think the bun had any burger sauce or dressing but it was OK.
We then had the vanilla cheesecake and sticky toffee. Again, it was well presented, tasted lovely, the strawberries, crisp biscuit base. A very good cheesecake. The sticky toffee pudding was also tasty. The cheesecake was £8.75 as was the sticky toffee. Pretty small though, a sliver some would say.
The whole meal was good, well cooked, nice service. The question I have is, was it £100 good. This is where I am struggling. 1/3 of this is the wine which leaves £30 for a main and dessert. I looked at the Bonnie badger and their main menu is pretty much identical but £1 cheaper.
The place was full, quite a few tourists and stereotyical Stockbridge people. I presume thats the crowd this food is aimed at, happy to pay a premium for well cooked, good food as a norm. For me, as a norm, I think five guys does a decent burger (my trick is to let it rest for 10mins, eat the fries first, the burger tastes a lot better ;).
Maybe that's why I feel a bit aggrieved. If I am spending this amount of money, I would like to see amazing. Taste bud sensations, eyes lit up, layers of flavour. Josper grill, smoked cheese, medium rare, smear of sauce. Perfectly cooked cod, glistening with a slight of oil or burnt butter. Served with a carb. It was good food, it was OK, we never left feeling there was any value or taste sensations, which, again for me, the price commands a bit more than OK and small portions.
E. T.
The food is some of the best in the city. Only downside is they have a kid’s playroom which can be loud/distracting if you’re sat near and it don’t want to hear children playing while you’re trying to enjoy your meal.
S. D.
Went for an early evening meal and the food and service was great.
Didn’t have to wait too long for our meal and it all tasted great.
The only downside was the fact that the menu was online only and a little slow to load.
I.
Good quality food here and a reasonable selection of ales. Friendly staff and a nice pub also.
D. N.
Just to say how much we enjoyed our meal with Scran & Scallie today. Warmest of welcomes, a lovely table (as it was my Birthday inc. a little card!) and from there on in, the only challenge was the choice from the fantastic seasonally driven menu. I had the ceps on toast (outstanding!) the grouse (stunning!) and the salted caramel tart (sublime!). Cocktails to start were on point and wine menu pricing us with a wonderful spectrum of choices. Service was perfect and all the staff team were really really great. THANK YOU for making my birthday celebrations special 🙏 x
T. K.
Maybe a pub menu for some but brilliant cooking for me. Relaxed atmosphere and fine flavours. Despite problems of supply and staffing the S&S continues to excel. The "specials" starter of Ox tail croquette in a light but full flavoured meaty soup with tender barley could easily be extended to main course quantity. On the traditional front the steak pie remains a star with super light pastry. Desserts are not our favourite courses but the blueberry parfait with sweet blackberries and the coconut rice pudding were exceptional.
We must expect to find higher prices but at this destination they come with satisfaction guaranteed.
M.
If I were to review this place for service, drinks and atmosphere I'd give it a 5. For food, however, a mere 3. Had salt cod Brandade - a croquette of "salt cod" but not very salt "cod-y", more like a plain cod croquette. It was nice enough. We ordered 2 steak pies and when they arrived we both promptly sent them back for the meat being incredibly, inedibley chewy, lack of any meaty flavour- quite poor. Sorry chefs, just not good enough if you're a sister of Kitchn.
Great wine and really attentive service.
A. H.
It was great. Food is fresh and very tasty. Service is amazing, they help in every second they have. Would recommend even though I personally prefer a bit more rough pub/bar.
A. L.
Had the gin flight which was lovely to try different gins from the local area. Wagyu burger was delish!
S. K.
Absolutely gorgeous food. Dog fair chuffed ana x
M. C.
Lovely venue with a snug drinking area, decent local ales and good service. Can't speak for the restaurant but I like the separation of bar and food.
h. u.
Fantastic food and drink. Great value.
R.
Very nice bar with good food and nice wine list. Stockbridge has clearly been moving up in the world as it used to be a real dive when I lived here. The staff a great here and the place has a real nice ambience.
g. m.
Amazing food.. great service..not over the the top..
J.
What a fabulous place. Lovely food and a really nice atmosphere. The staff were great and really attentive. I can recommend the haggis, neeps and tatties starter, the lamb 2 ways for main and the sticky toffee pudding is up there with the best we have ever tasted. Great espresso martini as well. Would thoroughly recommend, make sure you book they seem very busy.
D.
No. £80 for a couple of steak pies and a tasteless custard tart was disappointing. The chocolate cheesecake was good so up a star from 2. Won’t be back.
G. R.
Amazing food great restaurant well worth a visit
T. H.
Excellent Attentive Service, Very Busy on a Saturday Night and quite noisy. Good Wine Selection, Excellent selection of local ales and food was of a high standard and excellent portions.
K. O.
Pretty amazing dinner. We were a party of 5 who mostly ordered different dishes and every single thing tasted fantastic. We're debating about what is the highlight as everything was of such high quality. Probably the most interesting Haggis I've ever had too. Attentive and helpful staff, great service, great atmosphere. Don't miss out, you will not be disappointed!
J. S.
Wandering through a wasteland of closed dining options on a Sunday night I discovered me favorite restaurant in Edinburgh……
N. W.
Nice place, billed as a pub with food but it's too expensive for that. It's a restaurant. Liked the atmosphere, staff were great. I love fish and chips but only have it occasionally. The chips were lovely but unfortunately the batter on the fish was "flabby", not crisp and lovely as I had hoped. Shame really. Disappointing. On a positive note the starter of goats cheese and walnut tart was delicious, if a little on the tiny side for the price. Might go back and try the breakfast, possibly not. Best to try it for yourself.
P. A.
Perfectly decent pub for food, but don’t mistake this for a “destination restaurant” etc. in Edinburgh just because it’s related to The Kitchin. Their steak pie was decent though but their mash that came with the sausage and mash was very plain and not buttery and moreish unfortunately. Sticky toffee again was fine but nothing special. 3 stars seems harsh but it’s a solid 3 and as the price point is very reasonable I’d still recommend in general but simply not if you’re trying to find top places to dine in Edinburgh. 13/20
C. P.
It was good. The pie didn’t come with chips. Chips cost an additional £5. Found that one hard to take... call me old fashioned. But a steak pie should come with at least a side.
The steak was tasty. Service was good. Nice atmosphere.
C. P.
Absolutely amazing. Food delicious and service great, lovely team and I think great value for money for such high end produce and experience. Would recommend in a heart beat.
a. d.
Really good eatery. Quality of the food was, as you would expect from a Tom Kitchen establishment, excellent. Menu is not overwhelming, but caterers for everyone, with excellent dishes, for which the ingredients are sourced locally. The portion sizes are good and you leave full !! The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly. We ate there on a Friday night, and it was nice to see families dining there.
Staff were super friendly and helpful, very knowledgeable and offered great advice on the food. The place was busy, but as can happen in some places, you didn't feel rushed or forgotten about. The service was timed to perfection, no long waits between courses, and the food arrived hot. They have an extensive wine list and drinks menu and I can honestly say that it was great value for money. I would certainly recommend a visit, and can't wait to go back.
A. G.
Lovely..go try, expensive for public house menu, go try see for yourself! 😄
R. P.
Mains, wagu burger and fish pie were delicious. Desserts were very standard. Especially the sticky toffee pudding. I've had better from a microwave at home!
Unfortunately service was not what I expected from this sort of place. For the price you're paying I'd expect better.
B. C.
Food here was excellent. It was very busy and I had to make the booking for my group of 8 about 2-3 weeks in advance for a late dinner. Started off with a few drinks, which started off the great time we had there. Dinner and the service was excellent. The plating and the flavor combinations were very well thought out and resulted in spotless plates for my group.
Overall, this was my favorite restaurant and meal in my entire week stay in Scotland.
P. L.
Amazing food experience. The scallops were to die for. Friendly staff, and great for solo dining too. Loved it!
M. W.
Wonderful dinner and evening yesterday. 5-star fish pie and the special lamb shank, as well as great service. Delightful!
J. D.
Great atmosphere and food. Staff were very friendly and extremely attentive. Both adults and kids had a fantastic time.
M. B.
Super friendly welcome, infectious feel-great ambience, exemplary service from knowledgeable staff. Food was outstanding, portions just right which meant I had enough room for the coconut rice pudding - a triumph. Tried a couple of the local beers - fabulous. A very enjoyable evening.
H. R.
Lovely. Edinburgh food is very good and this was at the top of the pile. Delicious food and drink. Service was attentive, helpful and friendly but never overbearing. Couple of drinks, entrees, main plus desert about £110 including service. Definately coming back!
D. L.
Great burger!! Good kids menu too. Dog friendly
C. H.
Lush. Amazing pies. Steak was fantastic. Solid wine list. Quality beer. A real treat.
J. B.
Delicious food, serving staff extremely attentive and went the extra mile bringing water, bread etc and clearing the table quickly. It felt very covid secure. The alcohol free beer was actually really good!
C. L. (.
We were here twice for lunch: once we had the menu and once their legendary steak pie. Everything is delicious and they have a small but nice choice of craft beers. I love the interior and the staff is professional and friendly. Definitely worth the money!
J. G.
Best fish and chips I've had in years. Bit pricey but all the grub we had was first class . Very helpful and attentive staff. Hopefully will return.
T. T.
An absolute must are the two different pies (steak or fish)! We were even lucky and experienced some live music.
C. S.
Amazing place. Food was so delicious, we had a wonderful set menus, the fish was cooked perfectly. The staff were very professional and service was great! Couldn't recommend it enough!
S. M.
An excellent restaurant/bar which is ran by a courteous group of friendly staff. Their food is amazing and they have a very varied menu to cater to individual dietary needs. But beyond this, the service is exquisite - truly a great addition to Edinburgh's dining scene.
T. C. C.
Very nice food, great seating area and atmosphere, Only downside was service was a little slow today, we had booked in at 2.15pm and ate at 3.30pm. Check kids portion sizes too depending on what they can eat and what it comes with. Mine had sausage and mash and it was a spoon of mash, with one small sausage and no gravy! Main courses were fab though as was the pudding 😄 (albiet a little on the pricey side!) Situated in a lovely part of Edinburgh which makes for a nice walk back afterwards to the Centre.
A. B.
Great atmosphere, staff and food. Loved the wee scottish notes! Would definetely go back and/or recommend it.
A. L.
This is, without a doubt, my favorite place in Edinburgh. The food is consistently excellent and the service is spot on every time. It's the ideal place to go for most occasions. Visiting during the current time has proved to be a painless process with all the polish that was there before the crazy current events still present as always. If you're in Edinburgh, don't bother going anywhere else.
M. A.
Highly recommend this restaurant! The food was delicious and staff were attentive and kind. We came here for lunch, and we were lucky to get a table after walking in, with no wait or reservation. We had the steak pie with the bone marrow - which was literally mouth-wateringly good - and the hake with lentils, I can taste the freshness of the fish. The interior was cozy and our seats were comfortable. My dog got a water bowl soon after we were seated too! Given the quality of the food and the service, I found the prices to be reasonable. Definitely the place to eat if you’re in the area!
C. C.
Service was excellent and meal was delicious definitely be back.
K. B.
The food was excellent. I had a special that was highland waygu. My friend had the steak pie. Both were great. The cocktails we're also delicious but a bit on the sweet side. My only compliant was the wait. The restaurant was packed so I will give them that but it took nearly an hour from sitting down to receiving our food. That is just way to long
T. S.
The food here is amazing, a top top restaurant. Highly recommended. I had a Sunday roast which was sublime. you wont be disappointed
C. D.
Nice restaurant to get a more intimate and local fee of the cuisine. The sea scallop appetizer was very tasty as was the steak pie and fish and chips. They have a wide variety of beverages also available as well. A bit on the high side of expense, but worth the splurge.
C.
It’s always a good sign when I forget to take a picture of the food because it was so good. Go for the Tripler - local premium quality nicely cooked.
J.
The waiter was so very helpful and there was a great atmosphere. Excellent selection of wines, we chose white and it was lovely. The fish and chips were the best I had had in a long time and large portions with not a large price tag.
K. C.
Excelent quality food (oysters, fish and desert with paired whisky) - service was very good as well. A bit on the pricey side, but worth every penny.
J. M.
One of the best lunches I've ever had! The scallop dish was divine and even their 'normal' looking dishes are done with inventive twists and such care and attention that it makes me drool even remembering the food. The service was also fantastic and all the staff are a credit to the establishment.
C. D.
Delicious food. Quite pricey. Great service and lovely atmosphere. Live music.
Y.
Friendly staff and atmosphere with fantastic steak pie.
L. T.
Lovely food. Friendly staff. Very good beer and wine. Kids room is a real bonus. Pitched as a Gastro Pub but it’s more of a restaurant with a bit more atmosphere and restaurant prices. The food is very good however and the prices are absolutely fair for the quality delivered.
L. M.
Good food and friendly athmosphere. Expensive drinks.
M. C.
Absolutely amazing food, really friendly service and a must go place when in Edinburgh
D. L.
Fantastic food. Set menu is incredible value. Excellent service
R. C.
Wow. Best Sunday roast I've had in quite a while! Wonderful wine and whisky selection to go with it too. My Dad had the steak pie and it's one of the best he's ever had. (which is really saying something!) Definitely recommend booking in advance! Will be back for sure.
S. K.
One of my favorite meals ever, anywhere. We split the steak pie and the sausage and mash— both had absolutely incredible flavor, unlike anything I’ve tasted before (and I had just had a steak pie somewhere else for lunch!). Service was great, too. Would not miss this place if you’re in Edinburgh.
Z. -.
We booked this place with a lot of expectations, but after a great starter of haggis, the mains were average. The meat plate of the day wasn’t great and full of fat, the venison loin didn’t have much taste . Even the bread was not so great, to sum up I would say it was just slightly better than the average but not amazingly good as said in the reviews. It was disappointing.
H. N.
Excellent gastropub food served in a relaxed restaurant environment. Traditional pub foods, but refined/exceptionally well made. They emphasize local, fresh, and flavourful cooking. The service has been great on the many (5?) occasions I have been there. But it isn't cheap, especially in comparison to pubs in the area... Expect restaurant prices for food and alcohol.
I typically go to Scran & Scallie when I have friends or relatives in town and want to show off Edinburgh cuisine. There is something for everyone (vegetarian and gluten free options). Doesn't disappoint.

Table of 6, this place is by far one of the best in Edinburgh, it provides a relaxed Scottish pub like feel and atmosphere but with amazing food. Most of the table had no been to Scotland before or the restaurant and were all extremely surprised by how good the food is! A testament to the great produce and kitchens in Scotland, keep up the good work. Will be back next time.
T. R.
Great food, great service. Properly full now. Check out the pre 6

We spent 12 days total in the UK. This restaurant was by far our favorite meal we had. On top of the amazing food, the service was also some of the best we have had. Our waitress was brand new and even she was amazing to have. Also got some good recommendations of what to do locally.
I. Q.
Second time here. Really friendly, well organised and efficient. It has a snug room which doesn't have speakers which if you are sensitive to noise it is very handy. Nice food though it gets one 🌟 less as my hake was maybe not the freshest. When asked if we ordered either the steak or fish pie in advance could it be cooked without salt this was not possible which is a great shame as they are legendary. My husband is on a very low salt diet so it excludes these dishes for him.

Such a wonderful warm welcome at this pub turned restaurant. Gorgeous food, we had the Fish Pie and the Haddock Rarebit, good selection of wine by the glass and great Whisky. With impeccable service this was a lovely evening spent eating and chatting. Thanks.
J. L.
Food is brilliant, as you would expect from the kitchen group. However what made our night was the excellent service, all the staff were friendly and knowledgeable about the food and drinks menus. Can't recommend this place enough.
R. T.
Came up from Wales and found this gem of a place..... 10/10 food outstanding, service outstanding...... can't wait to bring more friends up to enjoy this wonderful place...
C. B.
Refined tasty Scottish recipes. Cosy and quite environment. Highly recommended!
T. L.
To start off with the waitress we had was exceptional, her attitude to entertain and deliver the best service to customers was faultless. However, we got the set meal of the festive menu and was disappointed with the crab rissoto starter as it felt it was warmed up due to the rissoto being luke warm. It lacked flavour and didn't have any seasoning in which led us to asking the waitress for salt and pepper (which at a established restaurant you shouldn't need to). The main and desert were tasty but felt as if the set menu wasn't as well attended to as the main one, as we then tried the burger and felt it was of a higher standard. Overall, I feel the menu is overpriced for what you pay for as I have had a similar quality in less established pubs. If you were going to chose to eat here I would stay away from the set menu and order off of the main.
A. G.
Delicious food in a cosy setting with exceptional service . We came here on a Sunday and the menu didn’t disappoint, especially the fish pie with chunky chips. It’s a must-visit for anyone in Edinburgh. But make sure you book far in advance - as it was almost booked up when we made our reservation 2 months out. Make sure to ask for the seasonal cocktails too!
N. H.
Very cool vibe. Great breakfast roll. Immaculate toilets. Friendly staff. We had the price of our tea and coffee knocked off the bill as it was late arriving. Top notch customer service.
L. B.
We had a fantastic evening at the Scran and Scallie, they ensured that my partner got a little birthday greeting which was a nice touch. Amazing food and great service. A little crowded and louded but there the staff was still attentive and caring. Thank you for a wonderful dinner!
F. B.
Beautiful food, fresh and delicious. Incredibly fast, friendly service, order to Infront of you in minutes. Don't mistake that for it being sat in the kitchen waiting, I requested a change from the menu in my order and they complied and still delivered near instantly. Would recommend and will be back 😁
C. H.
One of the best meals we had in Edinburgh!
Best gin and tonics I ever had with Isle of Harris gin that the bartender recommended!
E. W.
One of the few places that I am happy to pay the high prices for excellent food. Service is exceptional. Nice local seasonal menu. Nice beer and wine list. Beautiful and tasty desserts. Highly recommended.
N. R.
One of the best places i have every visited. Best steak pie and best fish abd chips we have ever had. Such simple dishes but just tasted incredible!
And dont get me started on the sticky toffee pudding! That was in all honestly the best one we have ever had. Its worth coming here just for that. Will be back again without a doubt!
Great service, great food, great atmosphere. Cannot make a single complaint.
J. M.
Food is amazing, been a few times now and never had a complaint about the food. The staff are always attentive and polite! Amazing atmosphere inside the restaurant...only issue could be getting a place to park nearby but this is by no means the fault of the restaurant. In my opinion it’s almost impossible to say a bad word about this place. Perhaps a tad pricey but well worth it for a special occasion!
S. W.
We visited last year with the in-laws, who were very keen to try the place. I had my reservations - before going, I had assumed that it was over-priced pub grub. I was wrong.
Whilst the menu has 'pub grub' items on it, the care and attention given to the ingredients, preparation and service mark it as being a notch or two above that. My meal was delicious, and everyone else enjoyed their choices too.
The level of service is amazing too - I chose the veal dish, but only after enquiring about the welfare standards - and the chef was able to provide the waiters with the exact farm the veal had come from.
That said, a meal for 4 here is not cheap -but the in-laws treated us, so I cannot complain at all!
J. G.
Wow! We went out in search of an early dinner Sunday evening and just happened upon this place. The menu looked interesting and the interior inviting, so we decided to put our names in for a table. Good thing we were so early, as they were completely booked from 8pm.
It's a bit on the expensive end of what we'd spend for a casual night out, but absolutely worth it given the quality of the food, drinks, service, and atmosphere. We didn't even look at the wine list as we were excited to try out some of the craft ales on tap. For a starter we had the crab claws. I think my main was described as artichoke with cacao beans; its unique flavors and (mostly) fresh ingredients distracted me from the fact that the artichoke itself was probably from a jar. Green spelt salad was fresh and tasty.
The portions were just small enough that we were up for splitting a dessert. We chose the syrup sponge, which was kind of like a sweet cornbread with some caramel and vanilla sauce. Very high quality and well done, just like the rest of the meal.
Service was good and friendly - I don't think I've ever seen such a high waitstaff-to-customer ratio before.
H. W.
We enjoyed our visit enormously, and would advise booking ahead if you want to be sure of getting a table at this restaurant, or 'pub with dining' as it rather modestly calls itself. The Sunday lunch roast lamb was cooked to perfection, the staff were incredibly attentive and thoughtful, and a wonderful children's activity cubbyhole just adjacent to the main dining room occupied our restless little souls while we lingered over the flavours and wine list. Well worth a visit.
F. C.
We were made most welcome on a very busy night and although we were squeezed in at the bar it proved a wonderful spot to people watch and listen and chat to the busy staff. We could see they are part of a happy team. Food as ever was excellent and the suggested wine reasonably priced and an excellent accompaniment.
A. R.
Delicious lunch and great range of dishes.
L. K.
Great service, great staff and excellent bistro food.
The staff took they time to explain the wines and menu.
Food came well presented and was excellent.
Not cheap but all well worth it.
Highly recommend if you are in the area.
P. T.
I love this place. Probably my favourite place to eat in Edinburgh. I request to go here for my birthday every year. The staff are AMAZING and are only out done but the food. The beer selection is outstanding. Cannot recommend The Scran and Scallie enough.
I would advise that you book in advance and get a taxi so you can fully enjoy all this excellent gastro pub has to offer.
r. h.
We ate lunch here mid week, no problem in getting a table. Waiting staff were polite and friendly and we were served in good time. The food came out without much delay, I had the mussles, my partner had the crab and the wee bairn had tatties and haggis. Shortly into our starters my partner announced that he would change the baby's nappy. I thought nothing of it and continued eating my muscle, which tbh weren't very nice, luke warm and bland. When my partner returned he stated that there was no need for a nappy change but something didn't smell right, it was my muscles. Needless to say, i stopped eating them at this point 😳 The other starters were nice, especially the haggis dish. The venison mains were standard, warm at best and under seasoned. Dessert was the best dish of the meal, the cheesecake although miniscule was delicious. Unfortunately, due to the extortionately high bill I would not recommend this place.
B. C.
Great food! Nice wine.
p. s.
From the moment we were met at the door a very warm welcome. Friendly staff a lovely waiter really good beer. Good food. Nice place lovely and warm on a very cold night. Well worth a visit.
D. B.
You will find many pub favorites here, but taken to a new level of quality. The local pub atmosphere rounds out the experience.
j. w.
Excellent food. Had brunch and dinner there, really high quality, while being able to bring small kids. Best eggs royale in town. But you do pay for the quality. Significantly more expensive than similar places but also very good and great staff. So fair enough!
C. A.
Very nice up-market twist on traditional pub style food. Excellent service.
M. D.
Very friendly and competent service, dishes were excellent except two sides that was a bit flavourless (kale salads). The place has really good atmosphere. I would definitely go back for another meal.
G. V. d. M.
Went for dinner for my Daughter’s 20th birthday. Met all the expectations of an evening like that. Good was amazing. Service and interacting with waiters were 5 star. A definite recommendation.
K. M.
Best lamb I have ever had. Service was perfect. Such a well thought out menu and great food. Very expensive (£50 per head) but well worth the treat when you can afford it.
S. D.
Wagu burger was unreal and the chips... wow!!! I'd go as far as to say the best burger and chips I've ever had. Staff were brilliant, very attentive and dealt with the whole covid situation very well. Keep up the good work.
R. M.
The soup was to die for. Lovely cute place. A bit expensive but worth it.
S. Y.
Couldn't book a table on Sunday lunch time but their 'walk in booking' works well. They rang after 20 minutes to say table ready in 14... Staff really attentive and the food delicious. The chicken parfait is the lightest we have ever eaten...dreamy.
M. M.
OMG wow!
We came here for my husband's birthday lunch and had a fantastically relaxed and filling lunch. My curried crayfish starter was huge and beautifully delicate, while my husband seemed to get ALL the chicken liver parfait. We both went for the burger, which was enormous and ridiculously good. One of the best I've ever eaten (and I've been to Texas). Reasonable prices and a great beer selection
S. P.
Great food and super service! Nice wine list and cocktails too. Will be back, thanks!
k.
The steak pie and the ham, egg and chips are phenomenal. Simply food done extremely well! The staff are lovely as well and even offered to call us a taxi when we had paid the bill.
A. M.
Really like the food here but it's over priced. £17 for a steak pie.... + £5 to have some chips with it 😳
We had a hair in one of our desserts so they took 2x desserts off our lunch but it was still £131 for lunch for 4. It was nice of them to drop the charge for 2 desserts but still it was very expensive. £5 for a bottle of water for the table and £11.50 for a glass of white wine 😂
S. C.
Went there for dessert and it was great
P.
What a place to eat. We had an amazing time in a large group and without doubt would come again if we are ever in area again. Thank you for having us and well worth the visit if you want a top meal in a friendly atmosphere.
T. D.
This is an amazing place, 10/10 would recommend. The environment was lovely, the staff punctual but not pushy.
I had what the menu calls "ham and eggs." This was not ham and eggs. This is what good ham and eggs, the kind that said it's prayers every night before bedtime and dedicated its life to the poor, becomes when it dies and goes to heaven. MASSIVE cut of on-the-bone ham, served with a mixed fried/scrambled eggs, thick chips and pineapple cubes.
My family had the pie and the fish. The pie was the kind of pie that feels more like a temple to beef cuts, with rich marrow gravy being used instead of inscence. Meanwhile, the fish was clearly not caught but instead wrestled from the hands of posieden - it tasted like the sea but in ever good way imaginable.
The cocktails and wine to accompany them were lovely, and well matched. I will definitely be returning!
L. B.
Thoroughly impressed with The Scran and Scallie. Menu was full of proper hearty Scottish pub food with a great attention to detail. Great selection of locally produced booze and service was really helpful in choosing. Restaurant was busy (and deservedly so) but we were helped in finding a table soon after we arrived.
R. E.
Went for a meal here with three others. The interior was nice and the service good. The food was ok but I know I will never go back. I just know there are local pubs that charge half the price and are better. Even if some of the pubs charged the same price I would still rather go there and have their food. I had the BBQ Beef Ribs for £19.99. The beef ribs were great but the salad that came with it just seemed like some tasteless salad you would have from a bag from a supermarket. The beef was good, the bread with the meal was good. But all together it was ok, average but bettered by so many other local choices.
C. B.
One of the best meals I had while in Edinburgh (also the menu made me smile). They also have an extensive beer and whiskey offering, and the staff are fab. Really nice place for a pint while relaxing with friends. Cheers!
J. Z.
Came in twice just for a beer or two in a couple of days (staying just around the corner). Very friendly staff, happy to help. Can't judge the quality of food, not having eaten anyhing, but judging by the crowd... Very good vibe, very good beer. Good times :)
S. K.
The food was very tasty, no doubt about that. But when I make a reservation four weeks in advance, I expect a better table than the one right next to the toilet and without a used napkin on the floor. I also expect my crabmeat-risotto to come without crabshells in it. Also I would prefer to wait less than an hour for my desert. And if I wave at the staff for 20 minutes to get my check I feel kinda left alone. But maybe that is just me.
H.
A great pub with delicious food and friendly staff.
C. M.
It is ok. I did expect more from the menu (to me it seems like it is trying to be complicated just for the sake of it). Venu is nice enough, welcoming but not significant/special. Service is informal but good. Overall I think it is rather overpriced for the food, service and menu. Better value can be had elsewhere. If I'm spending close to £100 for dinner for two, I would seek a more formal service with a little more from the Venu itself.
M. M.
We spent a wonderful afternoon in the Scran and scallie. The food and wine were just phenomenal and the service was very good. It's decorated to a very high standard which makes it very easy to spend hours in the restaurant and bar area. Would not hesitate to recommend.
L. D.
Had the Wagyu Burgur and it was very tasty. Scallops for starters was also very nice. Service was quite slow, we had to ask the staff when we wanted to order instead of them coming up to us and taking our order.
I would recommend this place but you might have to book a table.
M. W.
What an amazing combo of sophistication and relaxed atmosphere. Champagne, and a huge amazing burger. Range of gins and whiskeys, ale pie and fish pie. All from friendly staff. Even a kids area (despite being a classy restaurant) visible from the tables, with kids watching peppa pig.
J. W.
Good service but expensive for what you get. £17.50 for steak pie with no sides. Was an extra £5 for some chips to go with it.
P. H.
Top notch steak pie and delicious Cod.
S. T.
Went for Boxing Day lunch with family as group of 7 adults and 2 kids. Not something I would normally brave but To be fair to s and s, although very busy with family groups, it was well staffed and the staff were excellent. The food was a struggle. Lots of hearty dishes like pies and ham, egg and chips, burgers - which I really struggled with against the prices. I ended up mixing 2 menus and had crab ravioli in bisque and then cod and lentils. Not really pub food in my book but there was no chicken dish (other than caponata) and I really didn’t want a 4th turkey dinner. The bisque was pretty and flavoursome but quite bitter and heavy. The cod was well cooked but the lentils weren’t great and packed with carrots and potatoes which I just didn’t enjoy. More heavy desserts on the menu so I skipped that. My wee one had macaroni cheese. (Last time I cooked mac cheese it didn’t cost £8 a portion and I use 3 cheeses.) I thought this was a highly over priced menu. Beautiful presentation, but that’s what I know and love at kitchin and don’t really care for it in a pub- even a really nice pub. I live in Stockbridge but this was my first time and I wouldn’t rush back. I feel this place is very much feeding off the reputation of kitchin without the wow factor. There is better food at more favourable prices just up the street.
M. K.
Stunning food, deliciously serving you pleasure with every bite and overwhelming charming and profound staff. Unfortunately they did not have an adoption program as we would have been liked to live there... Nevertheless, go here and enjoy the one and only feast!
R.
I had dinner with a colleague and friend at The Scran and Scallie whilst visiting Edinburgh for work. It was a year ago—the food was incredible. Both of us ate the smoked haddock rarebit. To this day, it remains a memorable meal and I'd gladly return.
R. M. H.
It may be classed as a pub, but it's more than that. There's a gorgeous area for kids to play and the whole feel of the place is chilled.
As you'd expect from Tom Kitchin, the food is spectacular; local and seasonal; and not overly fussy.
As the menu changes regularly, some of the dishes that I best remember from our first visit aren't now on the menu but we had gorgeous Scandinavian-inspired roll-mops (something I couldn't usually stomach but actually good here), gorgeous cauliflower cheese, an individual chocolate chip cookie served in a little pan (my husband is still lusting over it) and the burger and chips (still there, still gorgeous).
We'll be back soon!
D. P.
Truly excellent food in the classic (gastro)pub style. Homely setting. Outstanding, warm, considered and considerate service with exceptional wine suggestions.
C. L. H.
We had a delicious, authentic Scottish meal and thoroughly enjoyed our attentive and pleasant waiter, Greggor. The food was so yummy and reasonably priced! Would highly recommend
L. M.
Good service, delicious chips, nice place to sit and have a meal. I was disappointed in the fish, wasn't as good as I'd hoped. My husband loved his burger he ordered.
K. K.
Delicious food, great service and kid friendly.
R. D.
Have been a few times to this place food is good and so is the service but it is a bit over priced for what you get . veg is extra and 4 - 50 for each portion is a bit much .
J. B.
Decor-wise, this is absolutely one of my favourite places. If I could do my sitting room up like this, I would! Both the restaurant and the bar side are very cosy and inviting, and the service is excellent. The Scottish menu is good as well, although a bit on the pricey side. If you're looking for a Scottish restaurant, this should definitely be in your list - and a trip to Stockbridge is always a pleasant experience as well.
G. L.
Great food well cooked. Nice atmosphere. Attentive staff. Managed the Covid regulations well. Wee bit pricey for drinks but hey ho it is Edinburgh.
J. G.
The Scran and Scallie has excellent food on the menu and a good selection of drinks. It is a gastropub so prices are a bit higher than average, but quality is definitely there. When I dined there, the music played was perhaps not the best choice for a fancy-ish dinner (90s pop music), although it set up a very casual and fun mood. Staff was very friendly, and we had a nice time overall!
M. V.
Had great food and a great time. What's not to like? Fab.
J. G.
Great food, great atmosphere
E. C.
The lunchtime three course set menu is great value. Each course was a well balanced, interesting and delicious plate of food. The atmosphere was a nice combination of pub lunch and informal restaurant.
N. H.
The people I was with loved this place. For me it was just ok. Tried the cottage pie but unfortunately the balance between mash and meat was very much in favour of mash. Service at times was a bit slow also. The staff were very nice and other diners i was with raved about the monkfish, the steak and the sticky toffee pudding.
J. K.
Wonderful place :-) we were early but they found a place for us in few minutes. Everyone is superaccomodating, nice and easy menu. There was problem with one dish we had, it was still very good but it wasnt perfect and young lady from the staff saw it and actualy convinced us that it is not good enough and it needs to be returned. New portion was excellent. OK, it is not cheap but you will get what you are paying for :)
K. J. C.
Tremendous fare! Great service and the food is lovely. It can be very busy and if you can avoid it, don’t sit near the door, as it can be a very cold draft. Check out the timorous beasties wallpaper and curtains, which adds a very classy look....
M. H.
Tom Kitchen does pub food well. Really well. Ok, it is on the expensive side, but you get what you pay for here. Delicious food, great beer and an extensive wine list. Service was lacking a little bit on our last visit, but the place was pumping and the kitchen was on their game as usual. Try the curried crayfish for starters and take it from there.
G. D.
This was an excellent place to eat. The children 5 and 2 were well looked after. The food was really good and the staff very attentive. I would highly recommend this gastro pub and will definitely go back.
C. S.
The meal was really nice . This is ham egg and chips
m. v. k.
Very nice food but servers seemed too busy so service was slow as a result. Prices are very high even for higher end pub fare. £5 for a little cup of chips that aren't included with the £17 steak pie for example.
C. G.
Loved it. Delicious food along with great service. The set lunch deal is fantastic for £15, but a la carte still good value for the quality. Nice, relaxed atmosphere.
K. M.
I'm not exaggerating when I say this was the best tasting, most delicious breakfast I've had in my life. Eggs Royale with a top-notch virgin Mary on the side - definitely a meal to remember. So with that said, it proved to be wonderful value too. I intend on coming back.
E. T.
The best bloody Mary I've had. Food is really innovative and high quality pub dishes. Relaxed environment with friendly service. Ham egg and chips is unreal and has to be tried!
R. B.
The food was wonderful and the staff helpful and efficient. My only issue was I found the noise level far too high. It was difficult to conduct a conversation at the table. If you're OK with a loud environment add a star.
C. M.
Great food and not too pricey for what you get. The whole meal was lovely and the staff were all professional and friendly. Would definitely recommend!
L. H.
This is excellent food in a relaxed atmosphere. Wanted to come for ages and it most certainly did not disappoint. Proper Scottish food, done right. In my opinion one of the top restaurants in Edinburgh.
B. W.
Really interesting place, marvellous food and facilities, prices very reasonable, friendly helpful staff.
R. D.
I visited Scran and Scallie today with the family.
The decor inside is very nice, stripped back brick walls, great lighting. It has a great atmosphere and despite being full it was never too noisy, we could hold conversations at our table comfortable. There was also plenty of room- I hate having tables too close together.
We ordered 3 mains, the Grilled Trout with Samphire which my step-daughter really enjoyed and said was very tasty, the fish pie which my wife thoroughly enjoyed and Fish and chips which... well I would have liked crispier batter. The fish was lovely, flaky, no bones and the batter (although not as crispy as I'd have liked) had a great flavour. The chips were chunk and delicious (twice or thrice cooked I wonder). There was a very generous pot of amazing tartare sauce (made in house, not out of the jar) which was fantastic.
Puddings were taken. Sticky toffee pudding which was rich, stodgy and lovely and Chocolate brownie with stout ice-cream. The ice-cream tasted wonderful and I cold happily have eaten a bowl of that...sadly I was full after my fish and chips and hence only picked at my wife's and step-daughter's puddings.
Drinks. A wide selection of craft beers with a major leaning towards Scotland's craft breweries and a large selection of wine also. There is also a great selection of whisky.
Not overpriced, not stingy portions and if my batter had been cripsy it would have been 5 stars.
Y. S.
Had a meal there last night for the first time! I cannot believe how great this place was, from the service, to the ambience, to the presentation of the food, to the quality of the food!!!!! Amazingly impressed and I am definitely visiting again soon!!! Well done to everyone in that place for an excellent customer experience!!!!!!
G. M.
Absolutely stunning lunch today.
The quality of the food the service, the whole package.
Highly recommended
K. A.
Good reputable restaurant in Nice place
A. C.
Trendy pub at restaurant prices. The waiting staff were lovely and looked after us well but the food didn’t leave me wanting more. I don’t understand the price point for such straight forward food.
C. S.
Had a wonderful lunch here recently. Service and food were excellent. Some may say slightly pricey, but definitely worth it.
I. B.
Went to Scran and Scallie for breakfast today and considering it's heritage was looking forward to it. Unfortunately the wallpaper where we were sitting was scribbled on and torn so initial impressions were not the best. Staff seemed a little hurried, and the food (and coffee) arrived off-hot. I had the full Scallie and my wife had yoghurt and granola followed by eggs Benedict. She asked for honey with the granola, but it never appeared. Both of the cooked breakfasts were OK, but nothing amazing, so facing a bill £37 left me less than impressed. Need to try harder.
J. C.
Delicious food, great staff just outside main town
C. T.
Food and atmosphere was brilliant. Great for people with young children and they made it special for my daughter. Service was fabulous!! Highly recommended.
Try the ham and eggs!
G. D.
Excellent meal yet again. Such a nice atmosphere and so attentive to our 2 spaniels. Definitely one of the best dog friendly establishments to have a great meal.
J. S.
Tasty local food, generous portions and well priced, with excellent service. I've been several times and am always impressed. Highly recommended.
M. A.
Awesoooome stake pie, super service. It is a must to try it if being in Edinburgh!
G. F. (.
I had waited, for what felt like, years for the opportunity to dine here. I had quite high expectations of this restaurant and I wasn't let down. The service, food, quality & atmosphere was excellent. We can't wait to go again the next time we are in Edinburgh.
F. N.
Excellent food and good, friendly service
C. F.
Been here for lunch many times and never been disappointed with the 3 course set menu. Recently went for dinner and was surprised that I didnt enjoy the a la carte menu as much especially when it does cost significantly more. The menu can be quite limited although they do have specials on but these can be very expensive. The interior is lovely and staff always great.
T. R.
Excellent food. Plenty of attentive staff. Busy so book ahead!
H. D.
Delicious duck terrine starter and partridge mains washed down with beetroot lemonade. If you want something different in Edinburgh then this is the gastro pub for you.
S. S.
Food was amazing. Although we waited 30 minutes for our drinks to arrive.
L. Š.
I have been there with my friends and we really enjoyend our time here. Service was excellent and food absolutely delicious. Staff was very friendly and communicative, we spoke about another restaurants, food and another things. Anyone who want to feel happy and satified from food must visit this restaurant.
S. M.
Amazing food. Relaxed atmosphere. Staff are extremely knowledgeable and friendly. Staff very helpful in recommending food and drink. Well worth a visit, best food we had on our 4 day visit.
E. F. R.
Great food but perhaps suffers somewhat from its popularity as it can get extremely busy and getting a table is not always easy.
Food is always great though and staff welcoming. A good location and easy to get to from the city centre.
T. F.
Friendly bunch, great service. Our online booking didn't go through, but they got us a table anyway, even though it was rammed! Great food, partridge was excellent! Best in town
P. W.
If every gastro-pub was like this one the world would be in much better shape. Tom Kitchin is a top chef, but even the best sometimes stumble just a bit when they set up a more casual eatery. But Scran and Scallie is a gem. More of a brasserie than a pub, the food is excellent and the service impeccable from the friendly staff. Very highly recommended.
L. D.
Quality, relaxed, cosy gastropub with really friendly staff. Excellent wine selection and brilliant value for the delicious set lunch. Highly recommend in the pretty enclave of Stockbridge.
A. M.
+ Great menu, well presented, high standard of food
+ Excellent wine selection
+ Good atmosphere
+ Staff are very friendly and attentive, but can be very busy which can lead to slightly slow service
- Quite expensive. In a very competitive part of town, some of the other options offer as much or more at a better price.
J. H.
Food is excellent and the staff are attentive. Having the small bar area is good for pre/post dinner drinks. Can be quite pricey, but is worth it for a special occasion.
L. L.
I've had mixed experiences at The Scran and Scallie. The first meal was simply amazing, and although expensive, I would probably have given it 5 stars. Subsequent visits have left me less impressed: my daughter exclaimed (on receiving the sausages and mash): "Is this it?".
It does what it does well, but it should be doing it for less. My other daughter really likes it, partly because Tom Kitchin came to her school to talk about local and sustainable food, and she's always asking to go back. However, it's difficult to justify the expense, when you can get just as good quality food elsewhere for 2/3 of the price.
T. M.
Staff and food were fantastic. A little secret as well is that they even have a small kids play area with toys and usually a kids film on, but it's all behind a large glass panel so parents can keep an eye on the kids but the noise doesn't bother other customers.
J. T.
Really good food and a great selection of bear. We ate in the bar area because we showed up without a reservation and were lucky enough to get in. It has a great atmosphere and a very friendly staff. A couple of fiddlers showed up to entertain the bar area.
M. R.
It's a pleasure being served by such friendly people!
J. C. (.
Nice ambiance ,relaxed and casual. Lovely food ,haggis starter really tasty and main courses lovely and sizable plates. Staff extremely pleasant and professional. Of course not the cheapest but worth it.
L. M.
I love Scran and Scallie! The atmosphere is so cozy and the food is delicious (sort of upscale classic pub food). I always tell people visiting Edinburgh to come here. Would highly recommend the steak pie.

I first ate here over 3 years ago and it was really good. I've now been quite a few times and I can't say the food has been great. It is too expensive for what is pretty mediocre food.

Awesome food, friendly service, and a great atmosphere

The dishes we ordered (berger and steak pie) were good, but I can't say they were amazing. The starter (pigeon breast escalope) was nice though.

Expensive. Got bone in my rabbit ravioli and was told by the snooty manager that sometimes that happened with rabbit. No apology and no effort to make up for the problem. It's not Weatherspoons; I'd expect the chefs to be diligent enough to check for bones. On the plus side nice beers and decent quality food, bones aside.

What a brilliant warm and friendly place. Great food and drink. Service top notch!!! You must have the steak pie! And the vanilla cheesecake is the best ever.

Loved it here the food was delicious ! Great service , i spilled a drink all over my 5 year old granddaughters beautiful dress, of course this upset her, the waiter was very quick to act , no fuss was made, and he even gave her a little memento . Everyone was happy and enjoyed the food and the evening xx

I had high hopes for this place. The decor is great. I had the steak pie and it was ok. The beer flight was nice. I think I might be being a bit more harsh as I thought the place would blow my mind....and it didn't. I will still go back but with more reserved expectations.

I had Smoked Haddock Kedgeree which was fabulous and then Rhubarb Tart. Very good. The other four guests were equally happy with their choices. Great place to visit.

A gastropub with amazing food and drink for a reasonable price. Simply a must to visit if you're in Edinburgh for any length of time, only a 10-15 min walk from Princes Street.

Absolutely wonderful, the food was delicious, the service could not have been better, the servers weren't only professional but could describe in details the whole process of the gravy which came with our dish, the bar selections outstanding, our best meals in Scotland!
D. L.
Quite overpriced but decent pub food. Room feels like a restaurant - could do with being a bit more cosy if you're going to serve pub food. Service felt aloof in the way you might expect for a high end restaurant which, again, is not what you want for a pub dinner.

The Scran and Scallie lives up to its billing as the top gastropub in Edinburgh. With some help from my server Verity, I enjoyed an excellent flight of three Scottish draft beers, the Cullen skink soup as my appetizer, and a nice plaice (sorry, couldn't resist that one) as my main. The plaice, wrapped in bacon on a bed of beets, was particularly tasty and a good light dinner. As I left I noticed there was live music in the second room; if I was fortunate enough to go back, I would ask to be in with the music.

Hearty gastropub fare with a touch of class. Imagine you can get high-end fish and chips or pies with a restaurant salad or starter. A good range of beer and wine on offer too, of course. It's really too expensive for what it is, but you are paying to eat at a popular tourist honeypot on the edge of Stockbridge, so the prices are understandable.

Scran and Scallie is a joint venture between two of Edinburgh's Michelin-starred chefs, Tom Kitchin and Dominic Jack. It's a 'public house with dining' that has joined the many fancy places in Stockbridge to spend you evenings. The stripped-back, bare-brick, walls with mis-matched tables contrasting checks and Victoriana is very cool and on trend and goes well with the ethos of down-to-earth food and friendly attitude. Definitely a pub that sells posh food!
As you enter you have a few tables and a bar with loads of great Scottish beer on tap and in bottles. The wine selection is also good but has some fantastic house wine options too. There are Scottish gins, whiskies, ciders and drinks from further afield. A short cocktail list is obviously a new addition and has some tempting Scottish themed options.
The menu has starters, mains and desserts (here called Yer Starters, Yer Mains and Yer Desserts) and also small bits (sides), vegetarian dishes and salads. You have all the pub favourites on the menu such as steak and chips, sausage and mash or fish pie, a Wagyu Beef burger is a more exotic take on the usual burger and chips. Others are just plain odd, including Sheeps Heid broth, bone marrow and Pig Ear carpaccio! We tried them all in an adventurous moment of madness! I can say that the bone marrow was lovely but it is really greasy and makes you feel like your arteries are clogging up! Pigs ears are also pretty darn tasty but there was the odd chewy bit that draw your attention to the whole 'I'm eating ears' and was a bit off putting!
We had a fab steak pie with lovely chunks of meat in a rich meaty sauce and proper pastry. What was really lovely was that the meat wasn't the usual cheap stringy pie filling but proper cuts of beef. A little chunk of bone marrow really made the dish. Hake with artichoke barigoule was my partners choice which was a lovely dish but he was clearly suffering from food envy looking at the pie feast! For 3 of us to have starters, mains and drinks was £90 which I think was pretty good value.
We will be going back and top on my list is the huge selection of game that was on the menu from pheasant to grouse and everything else in between. A really great dining pub well worth the visit.

Top quality food. Ham ravioli spring veg broth starter absolutely sang with flavour. Main of monkfish in pancetta with mussels and spinach was superb. Great gastro pub with good atmosphere.

Excellent service and super cozy vibe. The food was great, a little on the bland side but I think that is more of a personal preference. Otherwise, everything was cooked and prepared well!

5* to the place, the music, the food, the drinks and the staff!

Everything is delicious, and from a French perspective !!! Definitely worth it.

Visited for breakfast, portions are variable in size but tasty food and good service as you would expect from a chef with Michelin stars. It's pricey but worth a visit!

The more every-day sister of Michael Kitchin's eponymous restaurant in Leith, The Scran and Scallie is pub food done really, really well. With prices to match, but it feels like enough of a treat that you don't feel cheated. Warm, welcoming atmosphere and some exciting cocktails on a local theme. It fills up fast for bookings, but they always keep half the restaurant available for walk-ins so small parties can usually get onto a short wait list on the night.

Fantastic food and amazing friendly staff. Came here for my girlfriends birthday and was treated so well, made it a special night.

Lively gastro pub in the heart of Stockbridge owned and run by the team behind the Kitchin, my favourite restaurant in Edinburgh. Food and service are of a high quality however this is reflected in your bill. Ensure you book before you go.

Incredible food and great service. The oxtail and bone marrow is amazing.

Not a cheap place to eat by any means, but the food is quite tasty. Beers are expensive, even the draught ones, but the friendly attitude of the staff and the cosy atmosphere means it's a nice place to treat yourself to from time to time.

Great restaurant proposing 19th century-inspired Scottish menus. Booking highly recommended! Staff helpful and quick neat service 😋

Deicious traditional food and a vibrant atmosphere. You almost feel like eating at a village pub.

Really nice food and great service but the portions were really quite small for the price.

Definitely a must-eat when in Edinburgh. Reasonable prices, fresh, high quality ingredients, good techincal skills, down-to-earth service. Long may this last.

Very different place to eat and lovely flavoured food. Good wine deal. Try and pass the deli without buying something.

Amazing food you have to pause for, dog friendly and beautiful interior. Recommend the set lunch for a fine dining treat that doesn't break the bank!

Fabulous. No better way to spend a very wet Tuesday in Edinburgh. Food absolutely spot on - a real treat.
