For once a pub with some space and higher ceiling. Friendly, great food, huge bar and a rather relaxed ambiance.. its not quite a pub, rather a mix between pub, restaurant and theatre bar.. but works great for me

Stumbled upon this place looking for somewhere to eat. My wife chose the balmoral chicken, that she thoroughly enjoyed and couldn't fault. I had the best ever steak and ale pie I have ever had in my life. Although it was a puff pastry top, which I normally wouldn't go for, I couldn't fault the filling. I have to admit although puff pastry it was the best I have had. A big portion and the most tasty and tender pie I have had... Both of us left very happy

Decent pub in a good location (esp for the theatre... Though that's in the name). Only popped in here for a drink but it was friendly and chilled. Reasonable selections and prices. Would happily come here again.

Went for dinner here with a friend tonight. First off, food was EXCEPTIONAL and very quick. Fresh too. The best part for me and my friend honestly though was the staff. My friend has down syndrome, and the staff were great. One in particular who mainly waited on us, didn't catch her name but she was wearing glasses and a red short sleeves blouse. She spoke to both of us clearly and gave us a drinks menu (which was great as some people would look at my friend and make assumptions, and make the choice for him that he wouldn't be 'able' to drink!) The waitress also directly addressed my friend to take his order, and listen carefully to what he was saying (this is so important, rather than talking about a person to their 'more abled' friend - it can be so dehumanizing!) So, great job girl I'm the red blouse :) Wish I had change to tip you I'm so sorry!! Thank you

Came here for Sunday lunch. I Had the roast dinner and I could not fault it at all. Also had the Sticky Toffee pudding, yummy. The staff were an absolute delight and I would not hesitate to go back again. 10/10

So happy with my visit here today, the service was absolutely incredible all staff members I interacted with were a credit to you guys! Helpful, attentive and just in general nice people. I unfortunately didn't catch names but if the 3 members of staff I spoke to on my visit are anything to go by I will be back! Drinks were poured promptly and the food was so good! Soup of the day was French onion so a perfect start. An excellent selection of beers in a great old building in the perfect part of town. Very nice waitstaff. Don't forget to browse around and check out all the theater posters.

In for a quick lunch before visiting the Playhouse almost next door. Good service, fine food and reasonably priced too. Only downside is that there is no accessible toilet on the ground floor - toilets are down a flight of about 20 stairs.

Stopped here for dinner. They didn't have low salt meals but the were helpful in keeping it as low salt as possible. I had the sea bass which was good. My wife had the nachos which she enjoyed. We also had a good beer and an excellent Scotch. The staff was very attentive. They had a beautiful wooden bar. I would go back.

Lovely bar, attentive, friendly and helpful staff. Good food , well presented. Perfect for pre theatre meal. Only one negative the toilets were down some steep stairs, I have mobility problems so found this tricky but staff did highlight this hurdle when they saw I had a crutch. It was my decision to stay. Hence only 4*

This is a regular of ours when attending the Playhouse. Staff are always attentive and cheery, even when the place is busy. The clientele are usually a mature bunch giving a nice relaxed ambience. There is a good selection of alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks, meals are available, it's always busy which is reassuring.

I visited the theatre royal bar on Saturday June 12 the sevice was quick and the staff helpful and friendly all the covid-19 rules were in place it was a very Safe place to have a meal or a beer and to watch Euro 20 football or to talk to friends

Quintessentially a theatre bar, almost feels like a Mayfair posh gentleman's club. Great environment, often subdued, nice chairs to sink into in the front windows, and well worth soaking up the historical pictures on the stair well. Great venue.

This pub has a plush interior, and large tables at the back, which can be useful for a big group. The ale selection is small, but at least they have some, and the service is reasonably efficient, if not exactly bubbly. The food is good value basic pub grub.

A find as good as its stunning summer facade Classy without being stuffy, tourist friendly without losing its neighbourhood feel, combined with generous and reasonably priced portions of tasty food. A big bar of beers, nice wine list and curated whisky collection provide plenty of tasty drink options, while the bright, chandelier-lit interior, huge windowside banquettes in the back, and fascinating theater memorabilia make this a place I'd visit regularly in Edinburgh.

Had christmas lunch here. It wasnt busy but quite cosy place with some background music and nice atmosphere. There was some smoky smell coming presumably from the fireplace - like it or not. Food was good and excellent value for money - portions very big and not all of us were able to finish all their dishes. 3 course xmas lunch was £25. From beer lovers point of view beer selection was quite basic.

Finley did a great job as our server. Excellent food and drink in a beautiful place that falls somewhere between a pub (with an extraordinary Victorian bar) and an upscale restaurant. The place has two sections, bar and restaurant with no dividing wall. The music from the bar was a bit too loud for the dining room. But the food more than made up for it. The fish and chips are superb. The lamb shanks fell off the bone. Now let me rave about the toffee pudding...Perfection in a bowl!
