Reviews of The Wally Dug
D. C.
Nice cozy, friendl, historic pub with good real ale. Its location down the steps made me feel like I was in the bar from 'Cheers'.
Recommended.
J.
Pub outside of the busy high street and old town. The staff were very friendly, selection of drink was average, has a very interesting outside situation that has been dug into the pavement which is definitely unique and worth a see, some skilled masonry at work there.
B. B.
Really cute pub, charming staff and cool subterranean rooms
P. K.
Great drinks at great prices, very cozy atmosphere

An Edinburgh classic, but needs refurbished. In bad shape these days. Looks like the place got smashed up.
P. B.
Bizarre bar we stumbled across on our walk up towards Princess St.
Liked the name of the place and were greeted by an awesome pub doggy on arrival who brought us over a teddy to throw.
Good selection of booze, barman/owner we think, left for 15 mins leaving the bar unattended, just aswell we only stopped for one!
F. E.
This is a lovlely friendly local pub , good choise of beers, lagers and ciders.

First time visiting this homely pub in Edinburgh's New Town and certainly won't be last.

It's a good place to have a drink and bring your dog, is a traditional pub, they even have an old telephone from of 1900?? I am not sure but still works! They have a great selection of draft beers aswell.
L. L.
A couple of drinks with some girls after work. Local, friendly and will happy return.
J. F.
A proper pub good music and super barmaid
P. M.
Charming wee place, very very dog friendly - if you have dog allergies I would stay away from this place.
Interesting selection of drinks, though they were a bit bare on my last visit (no tequila!). That being said the prices are reasonable and staff charming... Though they do josh about a bit.
Clientele is a mix of New Town locals both young and old. Relatively friendly, though this area's traditional Edinburgh upper class first world ignorance can leave an unpalatable atmosphere on occasion (for context, I'm a poc raised in this city).

Lovely little dog friendly pub. We went early afternoon so it was nice and quiet. Staff were great and made our pup feel very welcome.
O. S.
Nice beer, nice bar staff, shows the rugby. Was lovely to find this place away from the rammed city centre bars.
D. G.
Great bar for a quiet drink with mates.
G. R.
Top New Town pub. Locals go there not many tourists. It has good staff and a good range of drinks. Best book in advance in the current circumstances.
M. H.
Tucked away in a sub basement, five minutes walk from the tourist trap of Princes Street, is one of the brightest little stars in the Edinburgh firmament. A buzzing little traditional boozer with a great selection of drinks and a really friendly atmosphere.
Dogs are positively welcomed (a sure sign of a place that really cares about its customers) and the staff will go out of their way to make sure your visit is as good as it can be.
There's a great selection of board games, ready for you to test your skills (or luck) against your friends.
If I live closer, this would definitely be my local.

Under new management who are doing transformational work. Great pub with range of local clientele, an eclectic mix of crackpots from the New Town. Always has heaps of dogs around, suppose the clue is in the name of the pub. Range of beer improved as well as quality of wine. Friendly place with lots of young professionals and loads of yuppie students.
P. H.
Nice little boozer, liked the way it's set out, 3 different rooms to drink in. You can either sit at the bar, or move through to sit on the nice Chesterfield sofa in another room. Then if that does not appeal, why not try the library room. First visit with the dog, I'm sure I'll be back.

We were renting an AirBnB down the road from the Wally Dug. So, it was out "local" for our vacation. We spent numerous hours in the small pub and had a wonderful time. The owner provided some great conversation and the beer, wine, and whisky was great (even some experimental flavored shots). The other customers were great - they seemed to all know each other and were super warm and welcoming to us. Highly recommended if you are looking for a great place to relax and chat with a beverage.
B. H.
Absolute must visit for Edinburgh… great atmosphere and they let us have food delivered. A proper old school drinking den.
S. V.
Fab little local with a good selection of beers.
D. W.
Nice little bar with good ales
J. M.
The wally has always been a bizarre place... New owners have thankfully taken the wall paper down and painted it. Visited last night after being at the restaurant around the corner. Glad to see it's had a face lift, the toilets much better... However it did feel like walking into a parody of the new town itself... With a middle aged man escorting his mother out and announces "Mummy is leaving everyone, mummy is leaving!!"
The beer selection is fine if you like campbells beer (I believe the owners also own the brewery) personally I find them a little bit unexciting. Decent mix of spirits otherwise.
R. M.
Nice, simple wee boozer. It's one of those wee pubs with separate areas so you can find a little privacy if need be. Kind of has a spit n sawdust or old man's pub feel but with a traditional country quality.
H. P.
Quite a way out of central of new town Edinburgh.
Visited with it being advertised as dog friendly ( which i was ) however was looking for somewhere to eat .
Please note its a drinking place only .
Good selection of drinks .
Place was a lot smaller that expected and barman was not the friendliest , we were the only ones in however never started a conversation and when we left we thanked him however this was ignored and not acknowledged in any way .
Marked as 3 with it being dog friendly which was handy for us .
C. R.
Lovely snugs and a nice quiet atmosphere. Wish they offered a few more ales on tap, but the ones they have are ok. We like meeting here at the start of a night for a drink and a chat. Dogs seem to be very welcome in here.
A. W.
Great atmosphere. lovely bar staff. Dog friendly. spent a few enjoyable hours here on Saturday evening, they also do big bags of crisps which is obviously awesome!
J. T.
Always a good night in this popular pub. Different rooms offer a more intimate feel if you can grab a table on a busy night. Reasonable tap selection and good location for whole of New Town
J.
Lovely pints and, as the name might suggest, there's usually a dog or two to say hello to. Much brighter after the refurb and now with additional outside space.
S. H.
Traditional well furnished pub with good selection of beers and spirits. A nice pub to relax in. Although I'm sure it's busy at peak times.
A. M.
Always has been and with the new change of management will continue to be one of the best bars in Edinburgh - as the songs says - "Where everybody knows your name,
and they're always glad you came"
S. n.
Great little pub. Was there to watch a World Cup rugby match so was crowded but great atmosphere. Accepts dogs!
D. K.
Very friendly and low key pub. It's a bit like the Edinburgh Cheers. Established regulars dropping in and out and being very cheerful.
R. H.
After assessing us, the staff was helpful with recommendations. Great atmosphere. Spent 30 minutes discussing what the paintings meant.
D. M.
A big thank you to the staff at "The Wally Dug " for helping me get my phone returned to me after another great night at the pub , good company and beer , always enjoy visiting when we are up for the 6 nations supporting Wales ! , see you in a couple of years or even sooner , Marshy

Really cozy traditional pub. Lots of smaller side rooms as well, and a games room in the back with lots of books, card and board games.
J. H.
Extremely friendly staff and regulars. Excellent selection of malts and gins. Cosy classic traditional boozer.
S. Z.

D. d. C.
Friendly and cosy in the centre of the new town with good selection of beers and spirits and good wine and a warm ambiance.
X. H.
Absolutely wonderful pub, great atmosphere and charming in every way. Would highly recommend.
J. L.
Liked the makeover and games selection but the beers themselves were uninspiring. Atmosphere was a bit flat on the evening we were in...
H. B.
Grand, small pub, laying just under Northumberland Rd. A tight knit of 3 rooms, patrolled by a black and white cocker spaniel.
A. M.
The Wally was quite the night I was in, but there was feeling of anticipation due in part to on-coming 6-nations but more likely to do with tge cgange of management to yet another okd Wally-Dugger - Mizza!

(Translated) Nice old pub. Prices moderate, but there was hardly anything going on the evening of our visit (a Wednesday). The other visitors had an average age of 60. However, if you are looking for a real pub without groans and loud music, you are in good hands here.
(Original)
