A. F.
Super charming pub with a good selection if beers and spirits.Attentive, friendly staff
❤️live folklore music Sunday afternoons
Z. R.
Had a whisky experience tour here. Great vibe and very large selection
A. H.
We had a whiskey & folklore tour here that was amazing and a great way to meet people! The place is rustic, charming and historically rich. Worth a visit for sure!
m. k.
Old locals bar.Down side st ,off the Royal Mile. Very good Whisky selection. There is a tasters room upstairs. Not an ale pub
G. P.
Lucky find just of the mile.
Great Guinness and some live music to boot!
K. S. (.
A gem!
Traditional pub, with seemingly a mix of more locals and tourists.
Good range of drinks on tap, and superb range of spirits.
Would love to have tried some of the hot food that others have sampled here, but was on the way to a meal elsewhere!
Pop in, relax and enjoy a nice pub just off the main drag.
J. S.
Visited here on a Whisky and Folklore tour. Was excellent and awesome to hear about some of the acts that have come through and performed here.
J. B.
Nice quaint bar that was quiet each time we visited.
N. C. H.
Just paying tribute to history here. It’s a bar with that most certainly. Bill Connolly got his start here, he acknowledges it, this is definitely that place. It’s also one of the few remaining in Edinburgh that is authentic as this is. It’s a hole in the wall however and no place for the faint of heart. We actually had a whiskey and folklore tour here that we booked on Airbnb, no doubt some high praise whiskey. Suit yourself or don’t, this is my take!
L. J.
Had a lovely evening here very relaxed atmosphere and excellent music choices.
J. H.
Nice area upstairs for fish tour gatherings, seating could do with being more comfy
R. G.
Just a splendid bar, you can't get anywhere better in Edinburgh.
P. O.
Decent bar - once the haunt of Gerry Rafferty, Billy Connolly, Clancy brothers, Dubliners & Barbara Dickinson...
O. S.
Ive i have 8 Stars it Would be so. For me the Best pub in edinburgh. Thankyou very very much.
J. A.
We did a whiskey and folklore tour with Little Fish Tours and it was really good. Would definitely recommend 👍
S. K.
An excellent traditional pub and historic venue for local music.
J. G.
To be honest, I only had a few drinks there (no food, no "crazy" experimental drinks) but lately I visited this bar once and had a great time with my friends there: Cozy, good-looking interior, they played great songs while I was there (like from New Order, The Doors or Joy Division) and not too loud so we could have a conversation. The staff was friendly. Please note: the men's room is on the ground floor but for the ladies' room you have to go upstairs (no elevator or something).
All in all, I would go there again if I got the chance to see Edinburgh again.
A. B.
Great little pub, went there for a whisky tasting and then came back later the same evening for more drinks! Super cosy and great atmosphere!
M. D.
Great wee pub, pretty much the same as it was in the 70s. Friendly staff and locals.
G. S.
Not the most luxurious pub in Edinburgh, but such great value for money, great staff, and great atmosphere. Definitely a place to escape the high prices and dullness of most Edinburgh pubs.
M. H.
Came here for a tour of Whisky tasting
Alister was a warming and confident tour guide.
Pub downstairs is a cosy place.
Large collection of specialised Whisky
G. F.
Came for Scotch tasting tour, stayed for more. Bustling pub, great atmosphere. Upstairs is great!
T. H.
Been here every time in Edinburgh , love
the glasses you get they are thick crystal ones , usually full of lovely locals , however tonight one decides to tell my hubby off for taken his mask off seconds before he sat down 🤣 Even though 4 local stood at the bar without them on x Barman couldn't apologise enough. Definitely worth a visit if you in this area .
M. B.
Very nice bar hidden off the Royal Mile!! Bar staff were super engaging and nice, gave me a sample of draught beer to taste before ordering, and very cosy atmosphere.
Will definitely go again!
P. D.
Great to see this place reopened and retaining its original appearance it has an old theatre bar look about it friendly bar staff have a smile for you as you enter stay a while
E.
Good wee pub just off the Royal Mile. Not the best choice of lager but cosy and homely.
E. N.
Lovely old atmospheric pub full of character and barmaid was lovely.
C. R.
Awesome local pub with very friendly people that strike up conversations. Went here while visiting Edinburgh and felt right at home.
M. P.
Lovely traditional bar with live music. Great for pre-dinner drinks!
S. T.
Good pub good staff friendly locals 10/10
T. E.
Traditional pub, great place if you fancy a dram
B. R.
Nice bar. Good venue for comedy gigs, but very warm upstairs and quite uncomfortable seating if you don't get in early
m. h.
Great beer well looked after and a spotless pub 😀 would recommend that you visit..check out the guiness
L. O. B.
Nice small pub. Great to meet up for the start of a pub crawl. Very Small selection of pints on draught and not a lot of bottles.
Very basic food. Pie or sandwich. Again great for a pub crawl and quick snack but don't expect a nice sit down pub grub/restaurant.
L. R.
So happy to see this amazing bar back to serving the good folk of Edinburgh, and beyond. I've enjoyed this bar for many years, and under new management the vibe was great on Paddy's night, when I visited. Great crowd and top notch service. Decent whisky selection, awesome tunes.. a must visit!
N. A.
Great atmosphere with live folk band and old school decor a perfect place to relax with a few pints
A. H.
Loved this little bar. Live ceilidh band playing (Sundays) . No charge other than tips box. If you don't tip then you should be ashamed of yourself because they are really good. Don't expect frills and extras. Just an old fashioned bar with friendly folk. Bar prices reasonable too. We both think it'sa grand place.
P. S.
Traditional pub. Excellent staff. Very friendly and helpful staff. Great whiskey selection
T. D.
Doesn’t look much from the outside but once inside made so welcome by David the barman his knowledge of the local area was a great benefit to us he also has a great knowledge of whiskys and other drinks he’s a lovely guy and we enjoyed our visits to his bar will definitely be back
S. C.
The Waverley pub is a must, and I can't recommend the Whisky & Folklore tour upstairs enough, as hosted by Little Fish. I went on Alasdair's tour and it was a great night. Cosy & quieter atmosphere upstairs at that event, then head downstairs where the buzz and the people are. Awesome place, so much history, so much fun. I learned so much in such a fun environment.
R. A.
Great beer, amazing selection of whisky. Slightly crazy decor - why a stuffed crocodile?
Pies looked decent but I did not try one.
Liked the period pipe work in the gents.
S. M.
Worth a visit, almost purely for the fact that you will not go in another pub like it. The decor is authentically vintage, though this has been sacrificed for cleanliness and freshness. The pub normally boasts a really nice atmosphere, but has strange opening hours and frequently closes very early.
G. S.
Fantastic traditional pub right in the heart of Edinburgh. A music bar since the 60s, it has recently had a refurb but maintains its character (basically they cleaned it!) One of the best traditional music sessions in town on a Sunday afternoon.
D. M.
An odd kind of pub but also very charming. When you go in you'll feel like you've suddenly been transported back to the 70's.
Although situated just off the Royal Mile it’s certainly not your average tourist pub. The décor is very vintage and there are loads of quite quirky things dotted around the pub.
Upstairs is filled with flyers and posters from years gone by and is interesting just looking around the walls. Prices are not too bad for being right on the Royal Mile but selection of drinks is pretty poor. Well worth a visit though just to see it.
G. P.
Good pub. Although the beer selection is limited; Tennants, Guinness and Bellhaven Best only. But the best thing about it is there are no televisions, you can sit and have a blether and laugh with your friends and family with no distractions.
P. C.
I visit this pub everytime I am in Edinburgh. It doesn't change. Snug, warm and inviting.
I just love it. Ok selection of beers (not great, no real ales) but a great place for a whisky later of an evening.
5 stars may be a bit excessive: it's not earth shattering, but it is a proper, comfy bar.
S. H.
Excellent comedyvvenue in the heart if Edinburgh's old town. Good beer and cider too!
A. K.
This is a beautiful original little bar that has real atmosphere. Life music, great staff and we'll run. As a tourist I love it and if I lived here it would be my regular.
M. S.
The bar is not very big no ladies or disabled toilets downstairs. Price wise not bad. Apparently Billy Connelly started his career here. They still have live entertainment upstairs.
V. C.
Good wiskey and great atmosphere!
s. l.
I've heard this pub have been going since the 60s, so it must be doing something right?!... It's a bit of an Edinburgh institution and has an eclectic mix of your usual old men along side young artists and musos. The décor is a mishmash of old posters, rope screen, original furniture and a traditional large bar. There's an additional bar area upstairs. Everything feels a little faded and dusty, like you've stepped back in time. The drinks on offer aren't very extensive but you get them served in an old fashioned handled pint glass, which feels nice to drink out of. The best bit is the Great Gatspy jazz music that's played, fits the place perfectly.
A. J.
If you're looking for an authentic cozy place with good whiskey, good company and good chicken pies, look no more. Steve's got you covered. During my visit, a bunch of merry men spontaneously started playing scottish folk music upstairs which even more contributed to the overall homely vibe to the place. Absolutely grand.
M. W.
All the old-timers will tell you the place isn't the same since Iain died, but they still drink here all the same. And don't forget the Guid Crack Club the last Friday of the month at 7:30pm. Best storytelling in Scotland!
D. H.
The Waverly has not changed much in almost 60 years from when I sang there in the 60s still a great place to have a sing like we did after the Fron Choir concert in Kings Hall Church. You won't need dark glasses as upstairs is very "green" with very subdued lighting :-)
S. A.
Nice little bar at the bottom of the Royal Mile but i only went there for Fringe comedian upstairs.
G. E.
One of Edinburgh's best boozers.
M. E.
Really good pie. Friendly barman. Good pint of beer. A good place to enjoy a quick drink. Less mad than some of the other pubs on the mile.
M. C.
Friendly, good service, good range of malts. Check the beautiful art nouveau etched mirrors.
M. L.
Great bar with a wide variety of scotch whisky. We went there on a whisky tasting tour which was filled with great story telling and of course great whisky. Highly recommended.
M. T.
Good old fashioned bar.lots of space upstairs also
L.
One of the very last bastions of traditional pubs in Edinburgh, The Waverley is unique in so many ways, from the bar layout to the choice of drinks on tap.
Favoured by old soaks and tourists alike, it has hosted countless performances of comedians, actors and musicians, including the great Billy Connolly's band, the Humblebums.
Quirky in every detail, the Waverley is an unmissable stop on any visit to Edinburgh.
C. G.
Wonderful small bar with a very friendly and welcoming barkeeper! They have a good selection of Scotish Whiskeys too. Would definitely come back again!
G. G.
Much improved! New management I believe? Certainly a lot livelier than my previous visit... Now does folk evenings. Which are really fun. Decent drink selection too. 😁
A. J.
We visited here a while back both before the re-furb and after the re-furb, we try to go whenever we're in Edinburgh - we usually have a great time in a fantastic location, at the time we visited it was nice and clean with great staff, atmosphere and surroundings. No complaints from me and we'll surely return. Great work
S. S.
Best pub I have ever been in, I would recommend it to anyone. I will be back anytime I am in Edinburgh. We'll done waverley. It has that old fashioned atmosphere of what a pub should be.
N. K.
Great place for traditional music on Sunday afternoon
K. R.
Great little bar. Ended up here after the little fish tour.
L. B.
Edinburgh best experience! The barman makes it a real scottish experience! A real taste of Scotland x
J. C. (. J.
Really enjoyed the atmosphere, and so close to other Royal Mile attractions. The whisky and Folklore tour was very interesting, and the Waverley was an excellent location.
P. G.
Visited on Saturday 17th August. Whilst the WHOLE of the Royal Mile was utter chaos and pandemonium The Waverley was a welcome little island of tranquility. Staff were very polite and the locals made us feel very welcome. We wil definately be back.
S. R.
Visited as part of a Whiskey tour with Little Fish Tour company. Excellent, experience to an important part of Scottish history.
R. S.
Nice wee bar, handy for a wee drink when in Edinburgh City Centre.
b. p.
Traditional Scottish pub good atmosphere
A. “. A.
Solid, genuine 1970s pub. It doesn't really care what you think. The bartender knew his whisky and the two floors offer a nice change of pace. I guess Billy Connolly got some of his start there.
M. J.
A great bar just off the High Street in Edinburgh. Great service and a wide selection of drinks. Authentic, a real gem among the other puns and bars in the area.
R. F.
Small selection of reasonable beers. Nice place and atmosphere. Friendly guy behind the bar.
M. v.
Ok, so the waverley is not the " every occasion bar". The drinks menu is very limited and simple, the toilets are a wee bit run down, but you'd feel very lucky getting to experience the atmosphere and references this just off the royal mile bar has to offer.
There's a lot of history to the waverley that only the locals and the more well informed customer would gather after a few times in. What makes the followers like the waverley is part history and part the unpretentious feel to it. You'd probably be remitted to the past, the decor and music are covering the walls and filling your ears with authentic nostalgia. 2 levels of red velvety jazzy bonanza. I could picture David Lynch drinking there if he ever made to town.
C. G.
Nice little bar, live music (sunday) spend very good time there, friendly staff and good beer and of course a lot of whisky
D. E.
Great old Edinburgh pub. Hopefully we'll see some live music here soon
X. J.
Big fan of the Billy Connolly stuff upstairs when I've visited previously (missed it this time as there was stand up on instead - fringe festival). Friendly bar staff and a good atmosphere.
T. M.

S. G.
Try the Whisky and Folklore tour (I booked it through Airbnb). Fabulous location to listen to stories about the pubs and to soak up the experience.
s. j.
Cute pub
d.
Came in for a festival event a cracking little pub with a bit of musical History where the Humblebums performed
C. S.
Walking into the Waverley is like stumbling into the past. It may not be filled with grimy old men smoking tiny rollups, the walls still hold the memory of those days, and the toilets may not have been changed since then.
The selection of drinks is decent enough, usually served by satisfyingly uncaring staff, and it's easy to get a good atmosphere upstairs, where you can get lost looking at old posters for Festival shows long dead. I know a lot of people who swear by this place but it may be more due to fond memories than the quality of the venue.
B. A.
Nice quiet bar
M. B.
Great atmosphere reasonably priced drinks
T. W.
Classic old school pub in the centre of Edinburgh. The recent refit hasn't gotten rid of any of the atmosphere. Has alot of live music throughout the month.
