Reviews of Thomson's Bar
M. H.
Big whiskey selection and good beer.
S. B.
A cosy warm bar that's not too far from Murrayfield, handy for a drink with friends before the rugby. I had the Estrella lager and I believe was a lamb mince pie.. Tasted okay. Service was prompt and friendly and was a very convivial crowd in attendance. Recommended!
M. M.
Great friendly wee pub ,not far from hotels or train station, nice atmosphere in a traction style pub
D. G.
Great traditional Edinburgh bar, close to the financial centre but not tarnished by it. Quiet friendly with great beer. Well worth a visit. Only pub I know with a copy of a guide to collecting beer mats!!! (that's where it lost the fifth star)
A. S.
Great real world boozer. Good atmosphere, good service, meant to have great food, although we focused on the drink. We hint - the more mature members of the bar staff pull a better pint of Guinness than the youngsters
c. c.
Good pub lots of history usually mobbed but for the first time in an age got a seat...covid working for me for a change!
J. L.
Great pub, great staff, great beer selection
M. M.
Lovely old-fashioned pub. Great atmosphere and good service, despite being very busy with the post-rugby crowd. Range of ales and lagers.
X. U.
I'm here on vacation and I'm staying about 1/4 mile away at Mercure Hotel. It's Friday, the rest of the group is sleeping and I wanna beverage. I don't Thompson's Bar on the mar and I'm not disappointed. It's not packed but it's got a dozen locals and more keep arriving.
I have a half dozen drinks, chat with everyone (they are so curious about my living in Los Angeles) and it's great. I fully recommend this local bar, the people are of high standard and friendly. It can feel crowded and loud, no music just locals partying so don't be afraid to jump into a conversation. I just had to try the OG Budweiser...
J. M.
Well, this is an Edinburgh institution. They know how to run a bar. Stonking ales that look like this. Sparkler brilliance. I mean, look at that.
A. M.
Excellent service. Great pint of tennents lager and fine selection of whiskys. Good to have a pub with no sky sports just good conversation.
K. L.
Great pub. Lovely real ales. No music, no sport on huge TV. A pub where you can go for a drink and talk!! Not many of these places left
H. Y.
Nice joint for a quick pint. Seats are hard to come by, so be prepared to stand. Prices are great, around 4£ a pint and bartenders were very friendly.
C. S.
Must come here for a bite and pint. Super friendly staff, and great atmosphere. All the way from Texas. Thank yall!!
E. Y.
Small traditional pub, staff very welcoming. No music, so you can chat. Pies on Fridays.
D. N.
As usual, it provided quality beers and excellent staff.
J. T.
Nice to visit a proper local pub.
M. W.
Always great service, proper pub, great management and my first choice when in town. Difficult times so make sure you support your local boozer too good to lose it!!
G. D.
I enjoyed my fleeting visit to this traditional pub. Beer was well-kept and tasty.
I. V.
Traditional pub recommended by locals. About 20-minute walk from the Royal Mile.
S. F.
Fantastic pub. Great atmosphere, if you don't want music or TV blaring at you . Wide range of real ales and relaxed atmosphere.. no big groups allowed so be warned if out on a stag/hen party. If you want a quiet pint with good conversation then this is for you.
c. m. b. d.
A fantastic old time boozer
Takes you back, a few more seats would be cool
Friendly atmosphere
J. H.
Great selection of cask ales. Ruddle County good, so good had two. Pies, steak pie and beans wonderful pub grub, honest, no frills just wholesome satisfying food. Traditional narrow pub tables suitable for the task of eating, drinking and blethering. do not expect a gastro pub. But, a warm friendly well run traditional Scottish pub brilliant. The world will be poorer in spirit if places like this vanish. Go on indulge yourself you will love it. I did.
Cheers All
s. f.
Great staff, friendly pub
G. C.
Excellent traditional Edinburgh bar. The decor would suggest this pub is much older than it actually is (opened around 2000 I believe) and makes good use of wood, brass and mirror to carry this off.Good choice of cask ales available with a regular rotation of guest ales. Staff friendly and knowledgeable about the guest ales on offer and not a bad whisky choice too. This pub is also popular with members of the Tartan Army.
K. H.
A great place to go for a well kept pint. No fruit machine, no juke box, there is a TV but not so you'd notice. What there is is good beer, conversation, laughter and a warm welcome.
A. G.
Great pub with a good choice of real ales and always a whisky offer.
Latest comment - half and a half (was on pints and doubles), great value, none of the other good beer guide pubs can beat it. Even out of town can't beat it. Recommended!!
If there was only one pub in Edinburgh, this would be my pick.
T. R.
Great old school pub
A. C.
Great for a pie and a pint. Seats are like hen's teeth though and there is no reserving a table, but you can reserve a pie. This adds an edge to coming for food and while you're eating you can feel the seat vultures circling. It all adds up to a great experience.
S. B.
Good selection of ales, around the £4 Mark which isn't too bad in Edinburgh.
P. S.
The staff were great. Abiding by the rules at the time. Good selection of ale and beers. Really friendly service. One top place to visit.
L. K.
I am, and have been for a long time, a big fan.
Traditional pub with selection of well kept ales. Lovely traditional interior. Stand-out pies for lunch, always popular.
N. P.
Forgotten what a gem this is. Need to visit more often.
L. M.
Always a good selection of cask ales
C. S.
Really great, comfortable, homely pub. Staff all great and friendly. Great for a weekday pint or a trip on the weekend. No crazy loud music, just a warm traditional pub you can hear yourself in :)
K. B.
Great real ale, great steak pies and friendly staff. Good for conversations with your mates as there's no music played. Much more a traditional pub. Try it!!!
D. W.
Warmly old fashioned bar for a quiet pint and conversation. One of my favourite places. Always good selection of beers and malt whiskies. Can be busy.
N. K.
Good old traditional Edinburgh pub. Good selection on tap and great selection of Whiskys. No music so great if you want a quiet catch up with people.
M. R.
Proper pub! Cask ales on. Famous for its lunchtime pies! 😋 Usually very busy when the rugby is on. Definitely worth a visit if you are in town
G. T.
Definitely worth a wee visit. Old school pub that you don't see very often. Great selection of ales and knowledgeable staff (helps when your not an ale drinker)
c. s.
Great traditional pub. Good staff. Excellent beer selection. Worth visiting if you like beer.
A. M.
Can feel dark and dingy because of the black painted ceiling (please change, it's features deserve better) however the wood panelling, vintage mirrors and posters and excellent beers make this place a must visit.
D. M.
The ornate "Greek Thomson" interior of this pub makes it a real treat to visit, as does the well kept and served ales. Despite the fancy decor, it is still a local boozer, a bit off the beaten track, but well worth searching out.
B. M.
Real traditional pub with quality ales and a good spirit selection
I. B.
You can't go wrong here. The pies are to die for and great selection of beer and whisky. Proper whisky measures, unlike some of the push pins in the centre. Go there!
T. B.
Derided by many as being an auld mans pub, which is just an insulting way of saying its one of the few proper pubs left. The small mercies of good taste , ensure that this pub has not gone for the sky sports noise box of every other pub in the toon nor sold itself out for the tourist currency or hipster -fakeation. If you want to go to a pub to drink a good selection of well sourced beer , socialise or just pass the time with a pint you wont be short changed. Long may it continue in its resistance to commercial conformity ,we need more pubs like this and the fake SNP no-marks should pay pubs like this a subsidy to continue in the interest of national heritage , an element that they bizarrely seem to care nothing about in the mad , bad global village that is fast becoming modern Scotland.
N. B.
A relatively small, traditional pub with a good selection of real ales and spirits. The pies are legendary - because of their taste and HUGE size.
m. r.
Magic lunch. Pie and a pint and good chat 🍺👍
A. P.
I love this place when I visited. Very quiet atmosphere with very tasty pints. A much other crowd was here when I visited but they seemed friendly. I think they get a lot of regulars. Knowledgeable staff and neat experience.
K. H.
This is a salt of the earth, pie and a pint bar. Don't go in expecting cocktails or a vast array of craft ales or specialty gins. Busy at lunchtime on a weekday (be there sharp at 12 if you want a table), the clientele is overwhelmingly make and over thirty.
This is where Ron Swanson would go for a lunchtime pint if he were Scottish and preffered meat of mixed origin in pastry to a steak. Nobody will try to engage with you if you're there to read the paper and enjoy a pint of Schiehallion or Belhaven Best.
A. W.
Can't beat a pie and a pint!
J. P.
Another classic Edinburgh bar that combines great beers and service within traditional surroundings. Always a good friendly atmosphere especially before a game at. Tynecastle or Murrayfield.
S. M.
Traditional Scottish bar for the more decerning visitors
B. M.

Is a good wee pub with a good beer selection and a good choice of spirits. Usually very busy after rugby matches at Murrayfield Stadium
C. S.
It's just a lovely pub with a great selection of real ales. Old fashioned pub with no food.
M.
The pie and beans are worth the visit alone, however there's more to the place than that. One of the best bars in Edinburgh.
J. H.
