Reviews of Tolbooth Tavern
J. G. K.
Nice pub. They seemed a bit distracted, getting ready for a big group, but service was still pretty good. Loved the atmosphere. I had Haggis for the first time and loved it.
C. G.
The Tollbooth is a traditional pub with a good choice of drinks and friendly service. It was very quiet when I was there but started to get busy when I left. The prices were normal for a city centre pub in Edinburgh.

We came here to eat in December last year; It was our second visit ever. When we first ate here a few years ago, the haggis tower was an absolute hit and we instantly fell in love with it. Not only it tasted great, but it also looked amazing. The only problem is that since the owners changed a few months ago, they stopped doing it 🤷🏼♀️ They just serve regular haggis, neeps and tatties, like literally every other place in Edinburgh does, and theirs is the most uninspiring dish ever (you can judge by yourself from the photo attached). Overall, our visit didn’t go quite well from the very start. The moment we stepped inside, before we even had the chance to open our mouths and ask if they were still serving food and had a table available (there’s no info about food serving times online and the website is quite poor in general), we were ordered to do the track and trace thing. I understand that business are obliged to go by the rules, and I have no issues doing it, but a simple “Hello” to begin with would have been such a nicer greeting in my opinion. The table service was pretty shambolic as well. It started smoothly with a waiter taking our drinks order, talking us through different options on tap (and they have a decent selection, I must give it to them), but it went downhills from there. We waited forever for someone to bring us the menus, then we waited even more for our order to be taken… There were waiters wandering around, but they all seemed so desperate to avoid eye contact, or any kind of interaction with us in general, that we found it truly amusing. When we finally managed to attracts the attention of one of them, then came the final “no more haggis tower” blow. Our food was ok, but it was also dearly overpriced and simply nothing to write home about. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a lovely pub with a lot of character and some nice pints, but if it’s food you’re after, I’d suggest you look elsewhere. Such a shame.
K. S.
Fabulous traditional Scottish food. Our first try of haggis, neeps and tatties - delicious. Brilliant friendly service too. Don't be put off by this place looking like any other pub - it's a gem!
C. H.
Amazing food and atmosphere. My family of 3 adults and 4 kids were looking for a place to eat after arriving in town. I wasn’t sure a tavern would be great for the kids but we all loved it. The Haggis was actually really good and the staff was super friendly. We enjoyed it so much we went back again a couple days later.
S. R.
Amazing food. Black pudding starter is a must. Good choice of local beers. Great customer service. Pet friendly.
M. V.
Good enough pub food. The burgers are tasty, but the fries were cold. Mac & Cheese come in a very small portion, not worth the cost. Indeed, prices are too high for what you get. You also pay for the location.
P. D.
Family friendly place with lovely staff. Baby boy was allowed and a spot for us as family was arranged. Burgers were great and came quickly. A bit pricy but that's okay considering the location. We would come back!
F. B. M. C.
Got there to try haggis for the first time. Staff is friendly. The place is clean. Yet a little overpriced.
P. M.
Scottish pub theme with ancient evocative interior. Fish and chips was very good, tvs had bbc news on. Nice are warm and welcoming. About 1 mile from the castle in a quieter part of the Old Town aka Canongate.
M. W.
Lovely pint of Maltsmith's IPA and very tasty Fish and Chips. Sadly the Mac n Cheese was a little bland and didn't come with the advertised breadcrumb crust. The table of Americans behind us also made their dislike of the same dish known. Tried the cranachan for dessert, which was also a little disappointing as it was mostly cream with hardly any hint of whisky. Overall not a bad pub, but maybe we just went on an off day for food.
E. R.
Nice place. We visited for the history of the place and just stopped for a drink only.
a. b.
Lovely old fashioned Scottish pub, great range of whiskeys and drinks here and a good cosy atmosphere. Didn't eat but the food looked really good
T. D. (. B. O.
Great pub with lots of history to the location. The staff was very friendly and even took a few minutes to give us some history about the building, beyond what was listed in the menu. The food was good especially the vegetarian options I had the white bean casserole, yum. Our most enjoyed restaurant in Edinburgh.
M.
In the beginning, only three customers around 3.30pm. By 4.15pm very busy.
The decor was rather gloomy. And the beer expensive!
J. R.
My wife and I were in Edinburg for 3 nights, we ate dinner here every night. We were never disappointed in their food or their service. The warlock pie was so tender, the Rob Boy had an amazing whiskey sauce and the perfect amount of haggis. We tried their burgers on another night as well as their potato and leek soup. Not once did we have a complaint about their dishes. Highly recommend Tolbooth to anyone looking for a nice meal after sightseeing.
M. P.
Lovely historic pub on the Royal Mile. Nice place to stop for a quick drink in between looking in shops.
A. D.
This was our first pub experience in Scotland, the staff members were lovely. They serve local Edinburgh beers and we didn’t know what to order...so the bartender decided to give us few test of the Scottish beers. Finally I ordered Edinburgh Ale: very tasty and later on the Caledonian.
Both the exterior and the interior of the Tavern look amazing: with stones, leather, wood, paintings, old books and you really feel like you are in a historical movie from the XVI century.
The location is great too: on the Royal Mile and on the way to Arthur’s Seat.
Please note: if you wish to experience a traditional Scottish pub make sure you make a stop here.
We enjoyed our experience in Tolbooth Tavern!!!
J. L.
We are really enjoying visiting this pub during our weekend in Edinburgh. It is close to our hotel and not too busy.
P. G. K.
Excellent service. Very friendly staff. Lovely food. Very good value. Great pub atmosphere. Well done 👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Z. R.
Great service and reasonably priced drinks for how central the pub is
J. E.
Very old tavern. Went in for a midday pint. Friendly service. The premises smelled strongly of fish, which was a positive as it also serves food
R. S.
It was ok. You definitely get the Scottish pub feel, but the food wasn't great. Drinks were good though!
B. G.
My second trip to Edinburgh and this has become my absolute favorite pub on the Royal Mile. Food is great but it is the atmosphere that truly sets it apart.
L. F.
Absolutely love this pub. Manager was very friendly and regaled us with ghost stories . Service was excellent and the history of the pub is so interesting
S. H.
Went in for a drink, nice pub, we didn't have food but it smelt good, barman was helpful and friendly
H. L. (.
Liked the pub. Cool and very friendly atmosphere. If you want some nice chunk of fish n chips and beer in Edinburgh. This is the place to be. Cheers mate.
S. F.
The history of the pub is outlined on a plaque outside the front door. I was a decent place for a beer while exploring Edinburgh.
D. H.
This was a really great pub, right on the mile. The place has a great atmosphere and history - the service was solid and the food was great! You can't go wrong with their burgers, the Cromwell's Revenge was excellent!
A. B.
Landlord had problem with the pumps when we visited so no draught beers. We decided that we would have to resort to Whiskies, we tried two but had to apologise for not drinking the accompanying water. Nice pub, will go back when beer is on, perhaps with a Whisky chaser.
J. W.
Excellent waiter, very friendly atmosphere, fantastic food and great beer. The best place in Edinburgh
A. M.
Great place. Loved the range of beers on tap. Fantastic food
L. d. A. O.
Nice place with a lot of history. It's cheaper than the other restaurants located at the Royal Mile. Typical pub dishes and beers, big portions. Not crowded.
A. S.
Food were great at large size, fish and chip was really good. Service was also good too.
D. S.
Perfect place to have a dinner. it's long wait but definetely worth it! Very tasty!
T. C. M. F.
Absolute gem of a pub right down the Holyrood end of the Royal Mile.... Pop in for a pint... They do food also but I haven't tried it. Hope to get that opportunity in the future....
C. H.
Quaint location, full of tradition and history, friendly staff, delicious food. Highly recommended 👍🏻
r. M.
Had a fantastic meal of veggie haggis, neeps and tatties on a foggy, spooky Friday the 13th. Really atmospheric, the staff were friendly and the food was plentiful and delicious.
L. H.
I've been a customer over thirty years and believe me when I say tollbooth has excellent food and a homely authentic atmosphere. If your looking for more of a sit down affair than Benes chip shop I couldn't recommend more. Don't bother with the droves of tourists up the street and enjoy yourself a nice quiet meal or drink with the locals
A. S.
This was a proper pub with really great pub food, great service and good whisky.
N. E.
Nice traditional food. Good draft beer
E. S.
I loved the experience of eating here. The beer was great and the food delicious. The service super friendly. Great Tavern experience!
E. F.
First time trying blood pudding. Great stuff. Great service and atmosphere too.
B. H.
A great place! The food is affordable compared to other places, and tastes great. Our waiter Mairi gave great service as well. Maybe ask beforehand by phone if the kitchen is still open as they tend to close the kitchen early.
Would definitely recommend.
J. V.
Very good burgers and beer. The wizard's pie was also very good, but the fish'n'chips was nothing out of the ordinary. Also worth noting an excellent service, with a very attentive waitress, and a very beautiful place full of charm.
D. H.
Lovely little pub - top notch drinks and service. Looking forward to trying the food soon!
G. M.
Excellent guy serving the food which was absolutely amazing, finished the lot. Would highly recommend for neeps and tatties!
M. T.
Nice little pub with a history. Very cozy, but the ales costs a bit more since it's located on the main street.
I. C.
Amazing little pub with friendly staff good selection of drinks and really nice bar food.
G. I.
Very reasonable prices for Edinburgh. Cheesy Scottish music playing but all good. Felt like a tourist! Ha! Give it a try.
T. S.
Awesome pub! Great food and tasty cask ale!
S. D.
Cute authentic pub. Good food. Lovely waitress.
D. P.
Stopped here for a beer and some nibbles as we came accross the pub and previous read it was one of the city "haunted" pub.
Food and drinks really good.
The young guy who served us was really friendly and helpful when we ask for some local information.
A. L.
Waiter was lovely and the food was excellent. The sausage in the bangers was amazing.
F. L.
Nice pub barely outside the city centre on your way to Holyrood!
M. R.
Our server David was so funny, personable, and a great person to our table of 10. The food was fantastic, but made better by David's genuine personality.
S. W. D.
Nice staff and a good choice of pub food. All tastes great.
B. J.
Very cool old building that once served as the tollbooth for entering Edinburgh. Friendly staff and great beer selection.
H. R. D.
Great service and food was delicious!
S. R. L. S.
Very pleasant little pub and great friendly staff.
L. S.
Delicious food, excellent service, interesting history.
N. L.
Really good, quaint tavern and super friendly staff. Completely enjoyed our time there. Great service!
A. B.
Great atmosphere and nice Staff, small selection of drinks, closes early and small place hence why 3 stars. Buy worth a visit if you like nice old buildings and wooden gargoyles!

N. M.
A traditional pub with excellent food and lovely service. Difficult to leave!
p.
Traditional Scottish pub. Great choice of drinks. They cook food as well.
K. G.
Guys, if you want to try a delicious haggis you have to visit this place, lovely, but careful don`t eat too much before visiting, amazing huge portion.
B. B. D. C.
Very good starter but fish and chips was too oily
I. B.
Loved this place. Very friendly staff, food was amazing. This little gem of a place will definitely become one of my regulars xx
a.
Popped in for a drink it was a little chilly but started to warm up as more people came in. The bar guy was really funny.
B. M.
Lovely little place with decent local beers
A. W.
Great service! Accommodating even for a large group!
P. &.
Very nice staff. Interesting place in old building. Fish and chips very big 😊
C. C.
Great local spot to get classic Scottish pub food - try the haggis, neeps, and tatties stack for an intro to the local cuisine.
F. V.
Great pub friendly staff
S. R.
Nice cosy pub with a mix of locals and plenty of tourists. You can always expect a decent cold Guinness here.
t. C.
Food was lovely and great service
W. B.
A great night with live entertainment and great food, barstaff friendly and helpful
J. C.
Fabulous staff and customers were More than happy to help us make choices for our whisky tasting experience. Were very informative about the local area . Jillian and melanie liverpool
J. D. (.
Amazing food and very friendly staff.
J. W.
Beautiful building with history. Nice atmosphere. Buzzing on a Saturday night not so much on a Sunday.
M. P.
Great flavors, generous portions, nice waitstaff, and down away from all the tourists at the top of the Mile. Well done!
G.
Great food, lovely location and nice staff
D. A.
Nice bar, friendly staff, good atmosphere and drink selection. I didn't get a chance to try the food. I guess they don't serve food on pub quiz nights, bit they let us order pizza to the bar - several others did the same too. We had lots of fun at the pub quiz and stayed until closing.
M. T.
Great food and very helpful staff. Definitely try their Haggis tower - not only tastes good but also looks amazing :) The place is not very big so you might want to book if you want to make sure you get a place. The kitchen opens at 5.30 pm so if you're early you can enjoy some pints at the bar :)
V. M.
What a great place to have dinner. The food was great (I had the delicious steak and ale pie, which is Angus beef marinated 24 hours in ale, making it so tender it fell apart in your mouth), but their server, David, was even better. He interacted with every person like they were a guest in his house, making you want to invite him over to your house! He actually chatted with everyone instead of just taking their order. I would highly recommend this pub for anyone looking for an enjoyable evening!
K. H.
Great atmosphere, awesome food. I had the Chicken Rob - chicken breast stuffed with haggis, on a bed of mashed potatoes, and accompanied by the most addicting gravy I have ever had. And the portion was HUGE! Highly recommended.
Fantastic local beers on tap, with a bar downstairs and the restaurant upstairs. Worth the visit.
N. A.
The food here was delicious! With the chef individually creating each meal! The Haggis was divine and the pie was just the heart warming meal needed for the breezy Edinburgh. And the ales and beer were great too - local to Scotland!
The waiters there were really welcoming as well as helpful whether it be deciding what dish to choose or tips for Edinburgh.
For a beyond nice, traditional Scottish experience on Royal Mile - choose the Tolbooth Tavern!!!
E. M.
This was our first trip to Scotland and the first pub we ate at. Perfection. David was phenomenal. He made us feel so welcomed and provided the best service we had during our 10 day stay. We will surely miss him. Love, Ohio!
T. B.
We found this little place quite by accident and what a find it is. Lovely friendly staff, warm and welcoming. The food is delicious, nicely presented and large portions. Tried their Haggis Stack, Beautiful beefburger with onion rings, chilli beef with taco shells, today we tried their steal and always pie, absolutely gorgeous, meat just melted in your mouth. No complaints whatsoever, sorry to be going home tomorrow,
T.
Very cool little pub. Must try the hot toddy.
P. M.
Small friendly pub. Good prices good food great staff.
A. S.
Friendly bar staff and lovely food. All home cooked on the premises. I had the steak pie which had proper steak meat in it. Very tender. My brother loved the sausage and mash. Nice finishing touch with the strawberries in the salad.
M. O.
Never judge a book by it's cover!! When I first saw the pub I wrongly assumed it was a locals wateringhole. Had the most warm welcome from the team. Austin is the most charming personable helpful member of staff and is a total gem. Food was plentiful, tasty and really reasonably priced. 4 ladies(questionable) from the South West had a wonderful night. 😘
D. S.
Took my Canadian here for some food after a day of wandering around Edinburgh and was pleasantly surprised with the whole place. The staff were great, the decor was charming and welcoming and the food was fantastic. Extra points for the functioning dumbwaiter, surprisingly reasonable pricing for Edinburgh and great humour.
A. R.
Fun old-looking pub with an entertaining backstory. Food is a step above average pub food, but I wouldn't call it gourmet. Service was friendly and attentive, and the place was child-friendly. Good spot to take a quick break from the sights, have a beer or two, and optionally eat some decent pub food.
L. R.
Really great place to eat! We ate there after walking around the Arthur’s Seat, and it provided a very welcoming and warm resting opportunity :) the food was really good (especially the pie) and the waiters absolutely lovely. Would recommend 100%!
C. R.
Great place. Has the feel of a 'proper pub' without looking like a dank care home.Bright and vibrant. A very nice place to sit and have a pint.
S. v. t.
Friendly staff. Hot chocolate was good
M. P.
Great food in a historical place, with good service. Try the fish and chips, it's really good.
J.
A lovely pub on the Royal Mile that serves a myriad of whiskies & local ales. Very friendly & talkative staff who take the time to make you feel welcome. Food is served there; l didn't try it but it looked delicious.
R. F.
Absolutely fantastic tavern, cannot recommend it enough. Great food, unbeatable atmosphere and Austin was brilliant. If my travels ever bring be back to Edinburgh I will look forward to eating here again.
p.
Historic pub, where you will get a full scotish experience.
N. N.
Excellent service from the waiters there. We had the Mac n Cheese as well as one of the burgers. Portion size was massive, took us more than an hour to finish them. The Angus beef patty was a little dry and hard.
M. H.
The food was great! I ordered the warlock pie, but I almost wish I had gotten the fish and chips - probably the best fish I had. The price was very reasonable for a lunch, with beers, for five people.
S. M.
Great atmosphere, lovely staff and great beer
F. F.
Friendly place. Good selection of beers.wines and spirits. Highly recommended
J. T.
Very unique amazing venue which holds many fantasic events, lounge areas for lunch & coffee etc & has a great bar including a gin bar to the rear of the building which has to be seen.....very sophisticated!! There are also Handcraft, Fresh flowers & street food stalls to enjoy. Would definitely return.
M. J.
This place is literally SCOTTISH PUB! Really cosy and vintage. I have been there 2x so far and I can say, that biggest problem is staff. I wanted to order coffee and waitress said to me, that coffee is not good, after that I ordered 2x haggis tower and waitress said to me again that one will be enough for both I was there with a sister, but she could not know if I am on some business meeting or just with friend). So basically if you like old pubs with good food for reasonable price and do not expect anything else from waiters just bring order on your table, than it would be good choice for you.
J. L.
We were looking for a classic tavern lunch after hiking Arthur's seat and this proved to be the one. Friendly staff at the bat, and the food was decent with good portions. Really hit the spot. Recommended when you're looking for a cozy retreat from the elements.
k. j.
A fine place to eat or drink, fantastic staff and owner made a weary traveler feel welcome. The local regulars are fine, friendly people that were one of the highlights of my stay on the royal mile. I was very sad to leave this most excellent place, and will surely return. I wish I could give it 6 stars! Do not overlook this excellent establishment.
A. D.
This historic pub was originally where tolls and taxes were collected on goods coming in and out of edinburgh. The building itself was really cool and gave the place an historic vibe. The food itself was the best meal we had during our time in Edinburgh. Just amazing Scottish/uk food like beef pie with an ale sauce, fish n chips, bangers n mash in a beer gravy. The depth of flavor was above expectations for a pub. You must try this place.
K. P.
A great place visited many times over recent years. A good selection of local beers reasonably priced,a good whiskey selection too.Rumoured to be haunted as was a former jail & place of execution & torture. Some famous convicts have been imprisoned their.
S.
Friendly staff and amazing fish and chips; very cool-looking exterior. Underwhelming menu and beer selection but some of that I'll chalk up to COVID-19.
P. C.
Great bar. Good selection of beers and wonderful atmosphere.
I went for food, but was informed they stop serving at 6pm early in the week. It would be good to have the times confirmed by the owners.
S. F.
Not a bad boozer. Seems to be mostly full of tourists. Not much in the way of craft beers but they were playing some decent tunes. Bit of old school rock and Bob Dylan. Didn't have any food but they have a section of the pub set aside for it.
J. K.
The best place! I’m really satisfied for everything! Cozy atmosphere, great staff and very welcoming. Food is delicious, good portions. And adequate price. I highly recommend this place for everyone.
C. R.
Lovely Traditional pub, steeped in History. Is Edinburgh's 2nd oldest pub
K. B.
Randomly came across this place after ditching the Hop-on-Hop-off and could not recommend anything better. Around since the 1600's caught my interest and we decided to take a chance on a new pub. We were on our honeymoon and just dropped 200 pounds on the "amazing" Witchery Castle Dinner (Don't waste you're money). We were greeted by the "pub dog" that basically just wanders around sitting (Literally sitting in booths) with random patrons looking for affection (ADORABLE). My wife and I ordered 2 Gunniness' at the bar with the locals with no issues and asked if they were open to serve food. They brought us to the "upper lounge" as we would call it in the US and gave us the menu. The staff gave us the specials and I cannot stress this enough. We had a 10 day Ireland and Scotland Honeymoon and as we enjoyed great food all around, this was the BEST FOOD OF OUR TRIP.. 5/5 PLEASE GO HERE!!!
A. N.
Really lovely little bar. 1820 with the character to boot. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is due to the lack of fire. Otherwise, good whiskies and good Scottish beers. Would deffo go again.
M. F.
Nice and quiet on the opposite end of the Royal mile, and they serve jamesons.
K. K.
One of my favourite places on the Mile. Usually quite quiet - unless it's a Saturday when they have karaoke (if you're not a fan, avoid at all cost!) or August when it might be a favourite for the tourists. Usually though perfect if you're there to talk rather than just have a drink. Staff friendly and happy to advise on drink choices. Also - Benny's Chips is just opposite if you leave at the end of the night and still need a box of chips'n'cheese ;)
S. L.
Very traditional pub. Plenty of local ales and good drink selection. Decent choice of pub grub on the menu and very large portions. We had the mac'n'cheese and scampi.
Good atmosphere.
M. C.
Not been there for years. Were there tonight first time for years Great place staff were amazing. Would recommend the place.
Had a great time.
Fantastic place. Try it off your a visitor . You will love it X
P. S.
Pub Food is excellent. Mac and cheese is incredible. Haggis. Excellent. Salmon as well as fish and chips are great. Only critique is a bit musty interior.
M. R.
We were a party of 4, all enjoyed their meals very much. Warlock pie, bangers and the haggis tower were all delicious. Great selection of brews too!
C. B.
Super friendly service and excellent fish and chips. The food was probably a tad overpriced but I suppose you’re paying for the spooky experience. I would definitely recommend if you’re in the area!
D. S.
Amazing pub built in an old prison and tol booth. The food is very good and they had very nice beers. Friendly staff and the place looks authentic. Recommend a visit when you are in Edinburgh.
M. T.
Awesome food. HUGE portions!
L. W.
We ended up sitting in here for most of a Saturday afternoon due to poor weather stopping us from touring the city. Drinks were well priced for a bar in the centre, didn't try the food though (food area was busy and at full capacity).
M. G.
Visited for lunch during the Festival, the place was packed and the staff rushed off their feet but they were still smiling and friendly. Food was delicious (portions are huge!)and well worth waiting for a table.
D. A.
Fun place. There is a lot of history in this building. I tried the haggis tower with neeps and tatties. My first try of haggis. The flavor was delicious, but I don't think I am a fan of the consistency.
C. B.
A lovely little pub with great ales and a friendly atmosphere. Can't comment on the food as we didn't eat but it was busy in the restaurant part.
D. H.
Historic and the last "local" pub left on the Canongate that hasn't been subjected to a horrid makeover. Locals and tourists alike enjoy the banter, friendly staff and good grub as well.
T. M.
Great service, good food, good beer.
I. S.
Very nice place with an authentic feeling to it.
A. F.
Just back from a lunch at the Tollbooth and I can't fault it. It's a cosy wee place with a friendly atmosphere and a really tasty and filling steak pie.
The food was super quick and perfect for a pub lunch - and the beer (Caley three hop lager) was just right for a Friday afternoon. If you're in that part of town and feeling peckish then it's well worth dropping in.
J. T. (.
Staff was very inviting and friendly. Took great care of my family after just getting into Edinburgh for the first night. Many thanks to David and his hospitality
M. M.
The only pub I visited in the Royal Mile and it was really nice, great service and extensive selection of beer and spirits, they serve food as well, but I was there just for a few pints, great place and the staff and customers make you feel like a local
J. S.
We were amazed how friendly the bar staff were especially Lily's grandma. Would recommend this pub to anyone . Hope to go back . Yes The riding of the marches was the best.
O. M.
Very friendly owner and cosy room!
J. S.
Good traditional pub.. Great Hanava 7 rum.. X
H. H.
The best old tavern in Edinburgh! Great historic scene, with amazing service. Compliments to the chef who doesn't hold back on plate sizes!
B. N.
Very nice old style pub with excellent food and a good atmosphere. Staff excellent as well. A must go to pub with a lot of history.
J. M.
Had the veggie 'haggis, neeps and tatties' - delicious and really filling! Great value and nice little atmosphere. Wonderful pub, would really recommend it!
B. R.
This pub is situated towards the bottom of the Canongate in Edinburgh's Old Town. The decor is what you expect in this area. Friendly staff and reasonably priced. Great place to visit 👍
C. M.
Fantastic food. First time having haggis and it was amazing!
Very friendly and helpful staff.
Would definitely go again if go to Edinburgh again
M. K.
Very very kind people, nice food
If this restaurant is in Paris or Barcelona it might be
3.5 to 4 star, but remember you are in Edinburgh....
Especially the haggis in this restaurant is very good
Much batter than what I expected!!!!

This was my first time in the Tolbooth and it was brilliant. Frankie Mac the singer was outstanding and the staff were fantastic. What a great friendly place to spend a night out.
K. H.
A great find, lovely old pub full of character. Good selection of real ales and keg beers. Good food too.
c. m. b. d.
Old school since 1820... step back in time and totter oot 😆👍🍻
P.
Delicious food, try the Warlock Pie for maximum Scottish beefy goodness. Cool 80s music played quietly in the background so nice spot to have a chat over a pint.
J. G.
I enjoyed the food and the nice service. My burger was tasty and enough to not leave hungry ;-)
I returned a second time for a pub quiz which was fun.
Would definitely recommend Tolbooth Tavern.
J. U.
Always a pleasure coming to eat at this place, been here twice and the second time I came to Edinburgh with this place in mind. Affordable prices and generous portions, the staff are fantastic.
j. p.
Great pub with a good bit of history behind it but found their whisky a bit on the pricey side when compared with other pubs on the mile.
f. d.
The food and staff were great. We had the Haggis and Mac and Cheese. Great value for money. I love proper okd pubs like this.
P. G.
The best haggis I've had so far comes from this small but very cosy pub, served as a "Haggis Tower"! Located in the very heart of Endinburgh, the place to go at least once during the stay!
D. S.
Great whisky's at cheaper prices than I saw anywhere else while we started for 9 days in Edinburgh. Great service from the staff too!
M. “. T.
Service was very friendly, (if slightly biasedly towards certain females). Good beer at a reasonable price, and a nice place to sip away the evening
N. W.
Charming pub with incredible history and good beer. What more could you want?
J. C.
A place where you can easily connect with Edinburgh's history.
Live music every second Saturday.
Nice staff and pints!
D. K.
Great burger and a beer on the Royal Mile.
K. M.
A little inconsistent, which is why I can't recommend the place. I've been many times and food and drink have been exceptional, but I've been turned away twice now, due to issues in the kitchen. Sort it guys.
E. Z.
Reminds me of Rebus. Not sure even if same pub. Had great lunch recently with US cousins. Waiter was great. Stirling guy. Great service and chat.
G. B.
The Line n Coconut band were superb. Great staff great atmosphere and facilities spotless. A very friendly bar
D. S. S.
Great spot on the middle of the royal mile to enjoy some food and some pints
T. M.
Good food, fresh beer, pleasant staff. Can't ask for more in a lunch stop during a busy day of sightseeing.
C. A.
The best staff with some fantastic cask ales. If this pub were in your town, this would be your local. We were instantly made to feel like locals.
A. G.
Great, helpful and very patient staff make you feel at home. Wonderful selection of music and great craft beers :)
S. M.
Nice place. Freindly staff. The only issue I had with the place was they say they do food, but the kitchen was closed when I was there.
g.
Went in an evening for the World cup on TV..was quite empty, service was prompt. Thought it might be a gay bar and said so to my student friend with me as I didn't want him to freak out!
E. M. B. I.
This place is a must go solely because of the onion rings. No joke. Also very historic. Lovely pub.
E. C.
Served within 10-15 minutes of ordering food. I enjoyed my tolbooth burger I ordered which contained haggis. Unusual but excellent you can personalise what you want served on your plate e.g. no salad or any food allgeries, a mini elavator for the plates to be brought up from the kitchen to your table, friendly people so I would recommend this place for local quality food or for good food on the go Scottish & it's only 5 minutes walking distance from the Scotttish Parliment in Edinburgh.
C. S.
It was very good. Waitress was very good, food was good, very healthy sized portions. Very reasonably priced for what we got.
S. R.
