Reviews of Blackfriars of Bell Street
A. D.
Great selection of beers with a few casks. Enormous burger, homemade and really tasty with great chips! Friendly and helpful staff. Well with a visit.
T. A.
One room pub.5 hand pulls all on. beer good. friendly staff
M. J.
The return of this merchant city ale House is welcome and it's good to see. Three ales on tap and a good selection of other lagers and ciders on tap too. Service was polite and prompt and the place was sparkling clean. Would like more ales on tap but understand why they may limit at this time

Good Pub! Food is not too good. A small “pie“ is just stewed meat with a dry puff pastry on top. Go here for beers! And the music is great!
L. F.
Hadn't been in here since it reopened and glad to say it's kept the essence of the old place but with a wee refresh 🐅👌 Participated in a Sunday roast - beef - which was delicious and very reasonably priced at £12.50pp. Generous portion of perfectly cooked beef, broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, roasties and yorkie, gravy. Will be back soon to try out something else from the menu 😋 🙌

Recently reopened. We had lentil soup served with toasted bread, which was excellent. My friend and i
then shared pate & oatcakes and some brie and potato croquettes which had a strange flavour and not to our taste at all. The venue has retained its former dark interior
" Mans Pub" ambiance. Our table had really badly mismatched chairs from one leather armless to a much lower school type wooden seat. Not the best refurb by far.
t. s.
It was a good place. Very busy but service was quick. It is a little bit cramped for space but when you have had a few drinks already it doesn't really matter to be fair. All in all still as good as it was back in the days.
B. S.
I had my son's 21st in the downstairs function suite last night. What a brilliant wee venue with an amazing atmosphere we had a fantastic night. The staff are all sooooo nice and friendly and Leon who coordinated everything is an absolute legend!
The food was delicious as well, pizzas from Nonna Said and the most amazing wee chicken dippers and croquettes etc sooooo good. Thanks again will definitely be using this venue again x
B. B.
Had a 'few' drinks after work with colleagues. First time I've ever been here, even since it was previously open before COVID.
Really good selection of draft drinks, including a great selection of Beavertown beers. Nice little seating area outside in a nice area of the city.
Staff very helpful & friendly, decent enough toilets for a pub.
Will definitely be back again, hopefully sooner rather than later!
Only thing is it's rather expensive. £6 a pint pricing that you'd expect to pay in a large music venue - not a pub. Glass of wine and a pint of Guinness came to just over £13.
B. S.
Terrific food, especially for a Christmas lunch. A busy, friendly place with great music but very expensive beer - £6.80 for a pint of Neck Oil?
T. M.
Fantastic pub. Lovely cold beer, and the grub went down a treat. I definitely will be back.
M. S.
It's a nice pub, we didn't eat here but I would definitely go back friendly staff, nice drinks, clean toilets and pleasant customers.
J. L.
Reopened and refurbished. Looks good. Great choice of Real Ales. Didnae have food this time. Friendly staff.
D. D.
Great bar, mixed ages. Normal bar with entertainment that starts around 9pm at weekends. Staff are friendly and it gets busy.
S. P.
An old Glasgow pub in Renaissance. Recently reopened. The interior is an engaging admixture of modern and ancient.
An agreeable choice of beers.
The Chef is First Class.
B. P.
Nice bar, busy without being crowded. Nice range of beers on tap. Particularly impressed they had a nice Wiessbier from Germany. Staff friendly and efficient.
J. P.
Great pub. It was recommended by my workmate who is Scottish & lived in Glasgow. Good selection of real ales, nice food & really friendly vibe. I understand they have live entertainment & comedians in the evening. Shame they don't offer the discount on cask beers for Camra members! I will definitely be returning if I visit Glasgow again.
R. S.
I came here with my dad and brother on the recommendation of our Tennents Brewery Tour Guide, and we loved it! We arrived just before the kitchen closed at 8:30pm, and my dad got nachos, my brother got haggis, and I got vegan chilli! We also got some fried pickles. Delicious! Our waitress was fantastic, service was great, food was yummy, nice atmosphere -- definitely recommended!
M. C.
Great bar. Great beer. Friendly staff and excellent food and drink. Love it.
P. M.
Glad this place is back. But need to rethink some of the beer prices. 6.80 for a pint which is 5 quid round the corner.
Z. S.
Stopped in for food while having a walk round Glasgow. Wow the bacon cheeseburger was to die for. Lovely relaxed atmosphere. Thank you 😊
A.
Delicious food and great service, highly recommend the food here. I would love to visit in the evening for the jazz music
D. R.
Great pub and fantastic atmosphere and food. Well worth a visit
P. H.
Ace place for ales. Well kept beer and friendly staff makes this traditional pub a gem on the merchant city meander. Friendly, affordable and with decent pub grub and occasional live music it's thoroughly recommended.
g. c.
Great to see Blackfriars reopened, good selection of cask ales
B. H.
Nice Pub with Good Music and Staff
A. G.
Great to have you back. Please turn up the heating though.
i.
Great food and great service. They also have gluten free bread and soup =) Thanks again!
G. N.
Great pub for music and beer
C. W.
Great beer food and service, now reopened after closed lunchtime pizza only Monday and Tuesday other days bigger menu.
c. b.
Grand pub, lots of friendly people.
J. C.
Busy buzzy pub upstairs with an smaller more intimate basement . Friendly efficient staff who looked after us really well - great night!
D. B. M. E.
Good sized function suite and friendly staff. Bobby Mac Disco
B. R.
Friendly staff, great beer and a menu that keeps you coming back for more. (Recently updated with additional choices). We are looking forward to our next visit, which as I write this seems closer than ever. All social distancing and additional hygiene measures are being implemented well, which really does make all the difference at this time. Keep up the good work. See you soon.
M. B.
Fantastic soup and sandwiches for £6.50 just before TRNSMT 2019
M. R.
A wonderfully friendly pub in the centre of Glasgow. Good choice of drinks and a cosy atmosphere.
J. C.
Lovely place to relax and enjoy a quiet drink and good food ,while listening to a selection of good tunes playing in the background .
S.
My husband and i used to frequent this pub a long time ago, even at Xmas time when we knew that it would be absolutely packed.
This time we only popped in for a quick drink to kill time before a meal reservation.
It's not changed much apart from a fresh lick paint indoors, but why change a good thing... The real ale brigade drink here but that's not for us. Still, it's still a good pub with a great atmosphere (when busy). It was pretty quiet tonight (6/2/2020) but it was only 5pm.
The service is good but the prices are a wee bit steep. £9 for a small white wine/pint of extra cold Guinness, but still we will return.
W. S.
It's lost its soul. So expensive..
Just been in on its reopening. 2022.
6 quid for a pint.
Been a customer for 40 years. Sorry to say I can't go back at these nonsensical prices.
M. M.
A classic Glasgow pub, plenty of character and great range of beers on cask & keg as well of cans and bottles.
M. C.
It was a nice atmosphere when I was in. I had the BBQ burger with sweet potato fries which was good. It was down to earth food, a proper slice of bacon on it with decent salad in the bun. The Cajun burger looked good as well, it was a full grilled chicken breast.
A. T.
When O Neil's across the road is too crowded this is the place to be in the Merchant city.
I. M.
Friendly staff, good selection of beer. It's an old school pub.. Lighting is harsh and seats are plain. Good to meet up for a drink with the lads but probably one you won't stay in for long
R. R.
One of the best pubs in Glasgow for real ale and craft beer. They have really done well with social distancing and it’s such a comfortable pub to sit in with your pals and just drink pints. A rarity now in Glasgow.
F. M.
Good range of draft beers and some well handled cask ales
L. C.
Great selection of beers, for people not from the uk they have really nice ‘cellar temperature beers’ great to try if you’re not sure on the ‘warm beers’ they certainly won me over!! Awesome cider too! We also had lunch on day too and it was all really delicious!
C. I.
Really good pub. The barman gave me generous tasters of all the real ales on and I settled in the end for halves to fully sample as many as I could. It is a relaxed place and I think it has live music on in the evening too.
S. W.
Always a fantastic selection of beers on tap (including Neck Oil, yum) and awesome burgers. There's a reason why it's so popular, and why I'll go back again and again! One of the best pubs in Glasgow.
R. F.
Traditional style real ale pub without TV's. Instead there's just a well curated selection of real ales, both on the pumps and bottled. There's live music every Tuesday night after 9pm and the tables in the large corner window area will be cleared for that. Can be very busy on a Friday night, but the atmosphere is always good.
d. d.
Nice selections of beers & lagers, lots of friendly people drinking in the Merchant City of a Friday evening. Parking is on street although there are some expensive car parks nearby. Bus stop and even High Street station nearby. Lots of great restaurants also in the city nearby. It's all good.
I. G.
I love this place. Always busy, always a good atmosphere. Situated right in the middle of the Merchants City to the east of Glasgow City Center. The entire area is full of bars and restaurants teeming with life and activity at all times of the day.
They have a great selection of beers, spirits etc... and always have a good choice of guest real ales on tap. I have not tried to food however from what i have seen it looks OK.
Prices are standard for the Merchants City are of Glasgow, not to expensive but not cheap either. A fair amount of seats etc inside however any time i have been in it has been standing room only. There is a small beer garden/smoking area out the front where you can take your beer as long as you sit at one of the tables.
Being in Merchants City it is 15-20 min walk from Central Train Station or Buchannan st Bus Station. There are car parks near by however there is not a lot of space and depending on where you park you can end up paying through the nose for it. Best to take public transport or walk from the center of town.
The only downside i can think of is that the Gents toilet is tiny. Other than that, it is a great pub. Well worth a visit.
S. L.
Great bar in the heart of the Merchant City, good atmosphere, decent prices. A good place to chill before concerts in City Halls or Old Fruitmarket. A better choice than some of the "trendy" establishments of Merchant Square. Great pub !
M. M.
Couldn't have been more friendly. Good advice on choosing an ale and made us feel very welcome. Nice atmosphere and great selection of beers. Highly recommended!
N. P.
Been there for a comedy gig downstairs...the pub itself is just a typical British pub...quite decent...live music on Sunday night which could never start for an hour or so for some reason...but their attempts were really loud.. Which made want to leave...:-) but we did not cone for live music ;-)
R. M.
We attended a friends 40th birthday party on Sat 2nd Nov, in the function room. Where our son's Band Soul Circus* played. What a Great night. The bar staff, and sound check guy, were lovely. Totally recommend this place.
A. L.
Well established popular bar with live music of different genres at various times of the week. Good range of beers - and some meals available too, although I've not tried them.
B. M.
Nice wee pub. Service was on point
P. M.
Ok pub but staff could do with a shake up. Always looks unprofessional having staff where whatever they like too (old sweatshirts, dirty jeans etc.). I'd like to visit on a less busy day to get a second opinion as I think with a little polish this place could be as good as some of the others around.
A. A.
When we lived in Merchant City this was our local. Food is just standard pub grub, but you go there for the beer and the vibe. Always a good mix of people. Bands are pretty good also but the volume was always played way too loud for my ears and prevented chat.
Star deducted for discovering on our last visit with Monty that it is not dog friendly.
I. M.
Dropped in for a meal with my partner while shopping. Excellent meal and a fine pint of cider for me and a glass of wine for the better half. First time but we will certainly be back. Recomend you try it.
M. M.
Great pub which always has interesting guest beers. Food is also very good. We love the Monday pub quiz, even though it is too hard for us.
K.
Long established traditional Scottish pub/diner with wide range of craft beers. Worth trying if visiting Glasgow. Very popular with both older and some younger crowd. No airs. Barmeals and lunches. Outsider seating for smokers
J. H.
A nice pub with a friendly crowd. Always fairly busy on the weekends with a great selection of beers. Has some decent food, a nice function area downstairs and it's a great stop your in the merchant city
B. G.
The bar itself was clean and very neat, the staff were friendly and the prices were reasonable. The real selling point has to be the food though! The kids meals were massive, both my kids had the fish fingers and chips, if you could call it that! The fish fingers were freshly made with very nice haddock and homemade breadcrumbs. The chips were outstanding, hand-cut, skin-on, fluffy chips! One portion would have satisfied both my kids, as it turned out I had to clear their plates for them unfortunately! 😂 The soup and sandwich deal was equally pleasing, both adults had the chicken and coleslaw sandwich and the soup of the day was carrot and coriander. Sandwiches were great, toasted crusty bread, freshly filled with chargrilled chicken breast and homemade coleslaw and the soup was delicious, hot and of course freshly homemade. Would definately recommend Blackfriars for a nice Sunday afternoon, I will definately be back!
X. A.
Great food and decent drinks, a meal for 3 for under 45£, great value for money, also intending on going in for one of the 15£ for 2 burgers deals and will update my review with my verdict, but over all good atmosphere and a good evening out
J. D. (.
Great bar
A. W.
There's a bar on every corner here in this location in merchant city Glasgow and a lot more nearby, so your spoiled for choice. This is one of the most traditional of the bars in the area and seems popular with an older clientèle. The service was as you would expect and the prices were reasonable especially for bars in this area, no complaints.
N. F.
Unpretentious, friendly pub in heart of merchant city with good, reasonably priced food and extensive beer selection. Popular for live music too. Outside seating in summer.
C. M.
Good to be back in Blackfriars. Could do without the music though!
t.
Ok, it is well known pub around the area. No big surprise then, but never been there for food and wanted to try. Also, a friend of mine recently arrived to Glasgow and I wanted her to feel the "soul" of the city. Couldn't have chosen a better place. The wine was good, better than I expected (but I'm Italian and therefore biased about wine), the traditional haggis neeps and tatties course was a revelation for my non-Scottish friend and the swingy-50's live music was the cherry on top. The service was great and the staff makes you feel at home.
You want a 10 out of 10 traditional night out, Blackfrias is the answer.
S. E.
What a legend of a bar! Friendly staff, great food and beer, comedy downstairs (2nd Tuesday on each month) and live music upstairs (every Tuesday). Great casual night out.
A. M.
Great to see the place open again
G. I.
Excellent beer bar in the Merchant city. Traditional, but also has all the new cool beers you want to try. I'm not sure about the food but go for a beer anyway
J. C.
Came here for the real ale on a visit to Glasgow as it was listed in the CAMRA good beer guide. A fantastic selection of real ale on tap and an interesting food menu too. I'll definitely be coming back on future trips to Glasgow.
D. S.
Great real ale in one of Glasgow's legendary pubs. Whether it's an IPA, Ruby, golden ale, stout or just lager the choice is great and the condition tasty. A beer tourist's must!
D. M.
They serve real food! None of your ping ping cooks here! Fresh home made soup, and real choices. I was spoilt for choice. The specials board chicken supreme with buttered veg, haggis bon bons and peppercorn sauce? Or soup and share a platter with the hubby. Well I'm not greedy, so I shared nicely. The fresh mushroom soup had plenty flavour, and lots of it. It was so good, we couldn't do the Land platter justice. But the lovely staff gave us the rest to take home. We had wine at £17 a bottle, which is a tad dearer than you pay elsewhere, but you won't get the friendly relaxed atmosphere. This is our new go to place when we are in Glasgow. Highky recommend.
A. W.
I love this pub. Great ales on tap, the staff are excellent and it has seating outside surrounded by some lovely architecture. You can even sample the ale before you buy. Recommended
S. N.
It's a decent enough bar in the merchant city with plenty of selection for beer etc. It's a standard pub and clean and tidy enough and tables for sitting. Good for a few beers and a chat.
A. B.
Lovely staff - very accommodating and friendly. Provided excellent service and helped us choose new drinks to try
M. W.
Old school pub in the centre of Merchants City, good selection of beers, wines and spirits. Food is decent with the burgers being rather good, some substantially larger than expected.
J.
Great place for a quiet pint before the rush. Always got great guest ales, free to wee sample, and the bar man knows his beers. A selection of daily newspapers to boot!
S. &. O.
This is a wonderful spooky bar. Cobwebs, skeletons the lot. It is a really great place to go for a drink and soak up the atmosphere. The barmaid is a goth which is perfect. Visit the toilets downstairs
D. W.
Great Scottish pub with excellent live music! On Monday nights you can learn to Lindy Hop dance too. Check out Glasgow Lindyhoppers on Facebook for more info!
M. H.
Went in for a drink on a Friday night after a meal, no music and it felt like a bar in a small village not located in the centre of Glasgow. The staff are friendly and there are lots of seating.
A. F.
Had my retirement do in here. Staff could not have been more accommodating with the arrangements in the run up to the night, and the night itself was perfect, great food, great service! Will always have s place in my heart for Blackfriars!
A. W.
This large open space bar serving a good choice of Real ales is a must do if visiting Glasgow. Good food and regular live music compliment this friendly pub.
S.
Good variety of drinks and a lively vibe
P. O.
What an amazing steak for a great price!
D. M.
Great range of beers and lagers, friendly efficient service. Good straightforward food menu and well priced. Loved the mince and tatties.
J. L.
A traditional pub with a great selection of craft and real ales usually a good crowd in, bands on some nights (rockabilly etc.) Reasonable prices for the area and real Glasgow pub better than most in the area.
D. P.
Real Ales, Craft beers, Continental Lager Beers, Scrumpy, good food cooked well. If your doing dry January, go somewhere else.
A. W.
Pleasant , helpful staff, good atmosphere, excellent range of beers and drinks. Good value for money. Pleasant outlook in central location. Recommend.
S. S.
Gorgeous pub. Friendly staff, awesome band on a Tuesday night, fascinating beer menu. Well worth the visit.
T. B.
Great food, fantastic atmosphere. Waited a long time for food, but we were in a big group. They have great haggis!
A. M.
Don't let the exterior put you off! The staff are immense - definitely the best service I've had in Glasgow - and the food was fantastic. A must- visit in this city.
G. M.
Blackfriars is a lively place with a lot character, and characters! If you're looking for a lively city centre pub with a good selection of wines, spirits and beers surrounded by a melting pot of clientele then it's perfect for you.
M. E.
Excellent friendly city bar. Wonderful range of real beer and continental beer. A little expensive. Tip:- drink slowly and enjoy😃

J. M.
Great place for real ale lovers with about 5 taps dispensing cask ales. Trendy without being pretentious. If i lived in centre of Glasgow this would be my local.
A. W.
Great staff, nice selection of beers and spirits and a good location to peruse the centre of Glasgow. Free from trouble. Always a good sign!
J. M.
Pricey. GREAT band playing that night. Very poor view of stage in basement, couldnt even estimate the size of the band! Between 6 and 8 players....
P. M.
Friendly staff and great selection of German beers. Good place at quiet times of the day/midweek but it's gets so crowded on a Saturday it can be difficult to move
A. W.
Staff really friendly, good beers (free house), good food, nice layout, good atmosphere with live music some nights. One of the best pubs in the merchant city, however it is expensive.
S. R.
A proper pub feel with the added bonus of a great craft beer selection and plenty of real ale.
Also really good food options.
T. S.
Just reopened and just as good as it was
H. D.
Great beer, and the chips were lovely, but the fish portion wasn't very big, although it was tasty.
M. G.
Lots of good food on the menu, rotating taps of real ales, very friendly staff. Love it here.
I. W.
Good selection of drinks on offer. Pretty busy pub and nice and central. Good place to meet friends.
G. K.
Great club nights
M. R.
Bustling old style bar but with modern touches and staff - at peak hours booking a table is a must - fabulous draft beers and gins behind the bar!
G. R.
Very good bar with food and great beer and service. Can't comment on food as didn't eat any but looks good
S. A.
Great selection of beers, really friendly staff, popular and attracts a decent mixed crowd. Too hot though
