Reviews of Robert Raikes's House
J. R.
Wonderful cosy pub with great staff, genteel atmosphere and the best bangers, mash and onion gravy for a long time. Parts of the bar are designated no mobiles/tablets/laptops encouraging patrons to get back into conversation mode. That said, it's a great place to slump back in the chair and devour a few chapters of your favourite novel on your Kindle over a slow beer.
J. M.
A beautiful historic building as a pub. The food is fairly standard pub grub (good for everyone and well priced). Its dog friendly too - inside - as long as they are well behaved and on a lead.
The bar staff told us this building was derelict until 2006, when it underwent a 2 year, £4.5m renovation, which is still incomplete (but you wouldn't know it!). There are lots of small rooms furnished like a posh hotel, so even in busy times you won't feel like its busy.
G.
This is a nice quiet and historic pub in the centre of Gloucester. It is owned by Samuel Smith's of Tadcaster and sells their beers which are something a bit different. This pub has recently re-opened (April 2022).
D. H.
Brilliant pub. Food is of excellent quality. Service is impeccable. Prices are really good, especially due to the eat out to help out scheme. Really impressed by the entire experience. The inside is beautiful. Big garden out back. Recommend for everyone. Will be returning 👍
G. R.
Serves the best food in Gloucester, very welcoming & comfy.
Friendly staff.
Will definitely visit again.
(Shame about the Leeds fan serving 😛😛😛)
10/10.

Some wonderful interesting choice of Ales, Portes etc. Food is lovely and a very good menu. The Hunters Chicken is massive and very tasty. Great outside area and cosy secluded sections to sit inside. Very cosmopolitan and homely feel.
I. A.
Amazing fish and chips. Loved the decor as well. If you eat there in a non-busy time, it feels as though you're in your own palace.
I. J.
Smashing pub close to the docks and in the central shopping district.
The building itself is fascinating - it's been brilliantly preserved, showcasing traditional building techniques off seen in the construction of wooden warships. There are lots of snugs (small rooms, many with their own real fire) to cosy up in.
There's a simple menu of quality pub food but the best bit: Samuel Smith's beer on tap.
Sam Smith's produce (probably) the best beer in the country. It's superb, especially their Old Brewery Pale Ale, if you can find it. It's the > F I N E S T < beer I've had the pleasure of trying.
That said, I've not tried the Yorkshire Stingo, which is legendary, so I hear!
J. H.
This is a beautifully reconstructed building with lots of character. There are plenty of little rooms and nooks to sit in, with some working fireplaces for winter. Decent food and beer, and friendly staff. Worth a visit.
N. W.
Lovely staff, well cooked & piping hot meal, affordable food. real fires and lovely inside. Can't praise enough!
J. H.
Want a building. Love this pub. Chocolate Stout is one of the best I have tasted and friendly staff.
C. c.
I had such a wonderful experience! The steak and ale pie was absolutely delicious and the patio was so lovely!
P. R.
Fantastic old pub with WOW factor. Samuel Smith Brewery have done a great job 8years ago. Muli rooms just a must visit place. Real ale excellent condition. Highly Recommended
D. R.
Great building. Strange place, but all Samuel Smith's places are a little odd. It has a lot of character.....
W. T.
A nice and friendly town pub, dog friendly as well, can't fault the place.
J. E.
This is a stunning old building that has been beautifully restored. However, no matter how grand the building, it is the people who run it that make a great pub. We stayed a week in Gloucester and visited every day because of the great welcome from Jerry and Tracey. We enjoyed great food and drink and excellent customer service. Well done and thank you. Highly recommended.
L. T.
This pub is way too plush, refined and stylish to be in our city. Cannot understand why it is not busier, lots of secluded areas to drink, great food and drink at amazing prices.
Worth a visit.
l. d.
Really enjoyed the proper pub food. Sitting by the fire in the front room was perfect, warm, and ideal after being out christmas shopping. We'll definitely be going back for food again when we visit Gloucester next time.
T. A.
Good tasty food from wide choice, large portion served promptly in clean environment. Series of small rooms so ideal for small meetings and an outside garden. All in a significant historic house right in the centre of Gloucester. Public car parks just behind. We visited by foot, so maybe their own car park?
M. S.
Such a beautiful pub with lots of cubby holes and open fires to enjoy. Great beer selection too.
S. H.
We went in but didn't stay, Didn't seem want to be helpful and not a drink choice for everyone which I think should be, And menu bit short, Might try again one day
L. P.
Absolutely superb. A sympathetically restored historical house with several cosy rooms. There is a large courtyard at the back. Interesting range of draught beers and ciders, including organic. There is a lovely lady (I'm assuming the landlady) looking after the place. Food is also served. A gem of a place
S. G.
Nice pub, beautifully refurbished. Great to see an old building looking so handsome. Traditional beers, ciders etc. Fantastic layout with little nooks etc. A modern twist with an old feel 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
P. G.
Didn't expect what was behind the front door it's really worth a visit. Food was very nice and the Samuel Smith beers very good. Nice staff looking forward to going back.
G. B.
Amazing place. Staff are friendly and professional. It feels safe here during these strange times. The staff lead by example with covid rules. I can't wait to come back here again, one of my absolute favourite pubs in the whole country.
S. A.
Very cosy pub with a quiet atmosphere and beautiful rustic aesthetic, and separate smaller rooms for privacy. Highly recommended for a quiet drink and/or a meal!
d. b.
GREAT PUB, GREAT BEER, GREAT FOOD, GREAT STAFF!!
We have been regularly patrons of Robert Raikes for many year and have always been welcomed by friendly managers Julian, Sandra and the lovely staff.
.
.
.
It's been very reassuring knowing that in these strange and uncertain times, the pub, Sandra and Julian have taken the Government 'guidelines' very seriously, making it feel a very safe place to sit and and have a bite to eat and a drink.
THOROUGHLY RECOMMEND! 🍺
T. H.
Absolutely phenomenal pub in Gloucester. Old and traditional historic building with a walled court yard. Great bar with a good selection of Samual Smiths beers
t. b.
Stunning Sam Smith's pub in Gloucester town centre, renovated to an incredibly high standard of workmanship. Several rooms and snugs transport the customer into the comfortable surroundings of an 18/19th century gentried house. The actual building is said to have been constructed around 1560. As an ale drinker there is only 1 real ale on, a very respectable Old Brewery Bitter but sit back and time travel back a couple of centuries. Don't miss it! Oh and don't forget to come back to the 21st 😊
J. B.
Really lovely pub, they invested a lot of money into it, so it stands out from other places in Gloucester. They do a really nice menu and the drinks are good too. It's a great place to go in the summer as they have a nice big courtyard. It's perfect either if you're going out with a large group of people or smaller groups, as they have smaller rooms too if you prefer some privacy/somewhere quieter.

Best pub in Gloucester
Had a meal there tonight with friends and we couldn't fault it
Pub has had a remarkable renovation inside, keeping in touch with its history.
Tastefully revamped, great ale and fantastic food at reasonable prices.
Recommend you try this and challenge anyone to find fault.
👍👍👍❤💙💙❤

My friend and I went into this beautiful pub and were very impressed with this fantastic building. The manager was extremely friendly and told us the history of Robert Raikes. Most interesting.
We ordered our meals which I have to say it was very good. All homemade and
The prices were also very good.
There were two rooms with log fires. It was really cosy and the staff were very friendly. Would definitely recommend a visit to this public house.
S. W.
Great atmosphere and pleasant staff. Marvelous to see it open.
M. G.
A top Pub with hidden Beer garden worth the Explore do it 👍 Still a lovely relaxed visit
H. C.
Loved this place. Would highly recomend it to food lovers and history lovers. First class food in a wonderful building. The owner was very informative and gave us a warm welcome. The outside courtyard must be as wonderful in the summer as the real fires were in february. Really made our visit to Gloucester.
J. S.
Beautifully restored inn. Front rooms are Tudor rear very "Pride and Pejudice" lovely large rear courtyard garden. Good pub grub and cheap beer. Definitely worth visiting as a tourist and great place to hold a business meeting over a coffee
L. W.
A seriously underrated pub in Gloucester which has gone through a massive refurbishment. It is absolutely gorgeous inside with exposed timber frames and warm atmosphere. Massive beer garden out the back and period furniture in all the rooms. I usually spend time looking at the old photos of Gloucester upstairs as it is great to see how the city has changed. Drink selection is based on the Samuel Smith breweries but to be fair most of the drinks are decent quality and good value.
s. h.
What a gorgeous place! Warmand welcoming..real fires! Food was promptly served by friendly staff
J. P.
I have always walked past this place mainly because it looked a bit intimidating from the outside and not like my sort of place, but the front door was open and we could see through to the rear garden so decided to visit.
Lovely building with different rooms and good sized courtyard rear garden with plenty of seats and lighting. Felt like a cosy place and the beer was very good price with friendly staff.
We won't walk on past next time!!
S. M.
Great service. Really gorgeous beer garden. Food was lovely - we each had a pie & mash. If we lived closer, we'd definitely be regulars!
S. L.
Love this pub ,cozy rooms with a real fire in each of them ,really like Sam Smith's beer as well
L. B.
This is a beautiful building with a number of rooms to sit in. The Sam Smiths beer was good and although it was very busy when we were there service was quick. We ordered food - lovely tomato and red pepper soup which was a meal in itself and a really tasty Chicken caesar salad. Well worth a visit.
A. B.
The food is lovely and has been the last three times we have been in here (I highly recommend the southern fried chicken burger with cheese). The building is lovely and always warm, with a cosy atmosphere from the fires. The landlord and landlady are very friendly and make you feel welcome.
My mum reccomends the liver and onions she's obsessed with it, the gravy is delicious.
A. Y.
I have been there twice and love the settings in the pub. You can easily find a cozy corner for a romatic dinner, or just a drink from the bar table. The owner is very busy, but the service is nice. The historic photo display is a great plus. I think it worths a visit even for travelers.
H. B.
Very cosy inside with nice warm fireplaces and comfy seats. Fast friendly service and great food at reasonable prices. Couldnt ask for more from a pub dining experience! Beautiful old building also. I strongly recommend this place.
A. I.

Excellent pub with a quirky landlord! We drank their own brew Lager, which was excellent and we decided to have some food there as well. The food was very good and we had no complaints. We would definitely call in again
S. M.
Four of us met here for our Christmas meal and we weren't disappointed. Had our own private room with a roaring fire!
The staff were friendly and attentive and the food was excellent. We will definitely be returning.
M. M.
Excellent pint of Samuel Smith's Stout enjoyed in an exceptional Public House. A true piece of history in the heart of Gloucester. Could not find fault here.
C. H.
Interesting pub with lots of different rooms. The food is good for the price- normal pub fare with good sized portions. The owners are friendly and always work hard to make a good experience
G.
This is my favourite pub in Gloucester. It is a really nice quiet place to go for chilling out.
J. S.
A good pub, run by a Yorkshire couple who make you welcome. We call in whenever we are in Gloucester. Reasonable prices and lovely surroundings with a nice courtyard at the back.
M. M. (.
A haven of peace in Gloucester. A Great public house , that has charm, character, historical facts from the pictures. The food was really tasty. Staff professional.
J. F.
Very good lunch, liked the BLT with salad and chips at a reasonable price. Good atmosphere, room for office groups. Servers friendly.
S. C.
Pleasantly surprised, we came in for a friend's birthday, we used to avoid Samuel Smiths pubs as I don't rate their lager, but I have since found out that I like their fruit ales.
H. B.
Fab historical olde world pub, quaint niches of seating areas, quality ciders and ales, beautiful pub garden and very friendly landlady. Would definitely return and recommend others to try!
P. S.
If you fancy a nice quiet pint where you can sit in a what can only be described as an old country house, feeling like the Lord of your own Manor then there's nowhere better in Gloucester.
G. E.
Love this place. Nice & cosy with a real hearth fire. My friend loves the Irish whisky here, also serve good coffee.

The Staff area friendly bunch and Support the Glouçester Branch of the Royal British Legion.

This is a cracking pub. Never packed has little rooms and up to about April several open fires that they are fine with you putting logs on. A true little gem.
M. M.
Excellent friendly staff and service. Food piping hot and served quite quickly. The staff are passionate about their restaurant and informative.
D. A.
Timothy Taylor pub, so only serve their own labels. Cheap prices. Garden at rear.
D. J.
Lovely pub really old with a lot of history. Staff were really friendly too
S. B.
It's a Samuel Smith owned pub..... Samuel Smith beer is possibly the best ever. Their attitude to their product is exceptional. Full Approval.
C. S.
I liked this place in essence you are eating and drinking in an old house with quiet intimate rooms to sit and relax in and have a conversation without interruptions, However if you sit outside in the back yard/Beer Garden you have to be aware of the Seagulls that seem to have infested that area which is a bit off putting, The Bar staff were friendly and helpful, I can't rate the food as I didn't try it, It's a good place let down by the Seagulls However I'm sure the owners are doing their best to solve that problem.
D. S.

(Translated) Lovely place.
Decor refined in the smallest detail. Rooms stylized as a noble castle give the feeling of participating in the extraordinary history of the country from the time of King Henry. Faces of historical figures - queens, princes and heroes - look out from the walls. The aura creates the feeling that one of these gentlemen would enter our room in a moment of glory.
Very professional and friendly service, which allows us to feel at ease in the restaurant, on the other hand always being in the sight of guests.
On the back of the premises there is a charming garden where you can hide from the noise of the city on warmer days.
Very tasty food. Refined, given with particular respect betraying the chef's passions and concern for the well-being of the customer.
The charm of this place is based on the complete penetration of the layer of commitment to history and breathtaking decor and the freedom that the service gives us. Everything at very affordable prices and always with a smile.

Urocze miejsce.
