Reviews of The Tall Ship
J. M.
Lovely lunch here, only just reopening after Covid-19 and would definitely recommend. The staff were friendly, attentive, welcoming and very helpful.
The food was absolutely lovely. Relaxed, unpretentious and unassuming. Decor a little dated, but if you choose restaurants for their food and you want a change from the usual mainstream chains give these guys a try. They're aiming to use seasonal produce which is a winner for me.
I chose Whitebait starter and Scollops from their specials board.
E. G.
Under new management. Excellent food and service. Local talent entertained us, whilst we enjoyed a pub atmosphere.
V.
Just been for a Sunday roast, which I believe is on a trial period.
I had roast pork with delicious crackling, freshly cooked veg and amroast potatoes.
Quick, efficient and friendly service throughout. It's a thumbs up from me 😋

We felt we were warmly welcomed by the staff who were plight and helpful. They had a good list on the special board and an amazing every day menu. The Tall Ship was well decorated and clean. The food was all freshly prepared and was nicely presented. We only went as it was my birthday and we were visiting the area but we will definitely be back to try more amazing food
N. R.
Only went in for a pint before having a meal down in the Quays. Seems ok. Regulars are interesting.....TBH can't really say much. Seems a nice enough pub, heard their food is good.
J. B.
I've been here a few times so far and the food is amazing. They serve lobster/crab and plenty of other dishes if you're not keen on seafood. The food is really fresh and served to a high standard and there's a good selection of drinks too.
It's never been too busy either. The pub doesn't look like anything special but it's in a good location and the food/drinks make up for it. There's also an outdoor area.
A. K.
Absolutely cracking pub such a hidden Gem. We travelled from Ireland to the races In Cheltenham and we came to this pub on two nights a Friday and Saturday. The staff are fantastic so helpful and very friendly and welcoming, on the Saturday night they had live music which was great. We really enjoyed the atmosphere around the whole pub and will definitely be back at some stage. Thanks again 😊
H. W. C.
Sam is a very thoughtful host, and welcomed us and the team to a pub experience that we will never forget! Not to also mention the live music evenings and the tasteful food cooked from the chef. Can’t fault this new management and it can only be onwards and upwards. We are proud to follow you on this journey Tall ships🛳 🚢 🌊 💨

What a great find! Not the best looking exterior but once inside the welcome is warm, the menu gives plenty of choice for all and the food really excellent. Have now eaten here a few times and whether steak, Gloucester sausage or Seafood Linguini, it's all been much better than good! Also well kept real ale and sensibly priced wine. Will keep coming back.
R. H.
Had a lovely meal with friends. We all enjoyed the excellent food and atmosphere. Really lovely menu to suit all tastes and my steak was cooked to perfection. The landlord was very friendly and attentive with great choice in music. Thanks Sam we will be back.
N. W.
We had a superb meal there last night. Great service and efficient but friendly staff. Sam seemed to manage to be everywhere he needed to be at once! Highly recommend going here for a meal, we will certainly be back.
The pub is going through a refurbishment but it's tidy and clean and rapidly looking cosy.
Definitely one to put on the list.
K. M.
Dinner with friends last week and the food was superb. Lovely fish dishes and home-made desserts suited us! Sam couldn't do enough for us, providing excellent service with a great sense of humour. They've only just taken over and are working hard on the decor, but definitely well worth a visit!
J. B.
Great pint, great price and top entertainment by the locals
P. W.
Called in for supper. Excellent food and beer great background music too. Due to covid rules and regs Sam is running single handed with one chef . Short waiting time no problem. This will become a great venue, when it gets to where he wants it. Good luck see you soon
D. P.
Proper Gloucester pub, good food, some good bands on, pool table, drink prices reasonable, clean and friendly.
A. T.
Went here for a birthday meal on a Sunday but had to leave as other customers were overly drunk and noisy in the eating area. Made my friends feel uncomfortable.
S. M.
Great Experience. I had the mixed fish platter which was cooked lovely. My husband had sirloin steak cooked to perfection. Hat off to the chef. The guy was friendly behind the bar and all staff very welcoming. Definitely recommend
J. B.
Excellent pub, very welcoming, great beer. Would happily recommend The Tall Ship to anyone who enjoys a traditional British pub!
K. B.
Happy to be one of first customers at re-opening. Extremely friendly service, real people, not hiding behind Apps etc! Food very good & highly recommend. Well worth a visit. A proper pub!
J. P.
Visited yesterday evening for a meal with my wife and two friends, didn't have a clue that the pub had changed hands a few weeks ago...
The new owners were fantastic, service was fast and attentive and the food was absolutely amazing 10 /10, we've frequented the Tall ships on dozens of occasions over the years and always had a good evening, last night was the best yet!
If you're thinking of visiting Gloucester and the docks for a day I'd absolutely recommend visiting the Tall Ships, it really is a special place 👍

Fantastic all round can't fault it
D. W.
Wow, the speciality fish dishes in here are amazing. The pub is a little tired, but don't be put off the food is excellent.
A. H.
Lovely pub right on the Gloucester dockside serving amazing food, fish is a speciality and is excellent. Very nice friendly owners who love France and this is reflected in the food and sauces. Always cooked and presented to high standards. Good quality wines and food at reasonable prices. Gets busy. You can book. Sometimes had live entertainment in small bar which is nice. Has themed food nights and you need to check these ad very good offers. Waited on very nicely by staff. Have been so many times and always a delight. Well worth eating here.
A. B.
Friendly place, good host will visit again very soon
K. N.
A really warm welcome and a genuine desire to make sure you have a good time. The menu has an amazing selection of fish and seafood with a supplementary crab menu. I used the menu as a vague starting point and ended up with a delicious seafood chowder with a selection of artisan breads.
It's not pretentious or precious, just honest good food in a traditional pub.
G. S.
Great lobster, great cocktails. A lot of care and attention into the food, drinks and customer service. Going to become a regular!
K. C.
Started with and shared a platter of lemon sole goujons & scampi.
Followed by a special; pan fried chicken with bacon; mushrooms in white wine and cream source.
And then ...
orange liqueur; fresh orange pancake with chocolate ice-cream.
All absolutely superb.
Service excellent, friendly, nothing to difficult, mix and match menu items no problem.
Really happy.
Thank you.
J. B.
Lovely food and friendly owners, well recommended, will definently be coming back.
B. H.
We had a very nice meal here on Sunday 15th April. The menu is fish in the main and very nice it was too. I had cod loin and my wife had sea bass fillet. Perfect. All fish is locally bought and fresh. Well worth a visit.
C. C.
The food at the Tall Ships is fantastic. Compliments to the chef. The service was excellent. Waitress was polite and friendly and willing to help. Very efficient staff. It's definitely worth checking it out.
S. P.
Last visit 2 years ago. The food was very good then so it was very pleasing to find the food was still excellent. Don't be put off by the old school outside/ inside, it's clean & cosy with the main thing being, fresh produce cooked well. You would do well to grab a seat & eat. The landlady was really nice, they had a lot of specials which shows passion from the chef & attention to freshness. Has some nice real ales The "ships crew" (as it said on their tops) were all very friendly & helpfu. Get good honest grub at chain prices.
J. T.
Beautiful food taste very good with brilliant price!
B. T.
We came with as a fairly large group, for a pub which serves mainly seafood they could at least serve fresh crab as it is in season, also the chips were really bad ( frozen ) .
I could have has better seafood going to a local fish n chip!
I think it's worth 3 out of 5 for the food, otherwise the beer is ok and the rest of the pub is nice, the staff is very nice .
P. S.
Its a shame the best food pub this side of wherever is closing... Yet a little mouse told me St Brevals is lucky enough to welcome them . See you in The Forest when the madness passes
Regards Me and Her @ The Turkey Shed. .
Y. O.
Brilliant food and super fast service with the added bonus of excellent beer too. We went for the monthly Urban Menu last Thursday night (3 courses for £9) and were so impressed we went back again for Friday lunch. If you like seafood you really should pay them a visit.
H. W.
Ate here whilst on short break to Gloucester with friends. Interesting, varied menu, mainly fresh fish and seafood. Excellent crab thermidor. Friendly service and reasonable prices. Made a change from the usual chains. Well worth a visit.

Very nice pub

During the Easter weekend visit to the city we had a great meal at this Tardis-like pub early on the Saturday evening, on what the welcoming bar staff (landlady?) said was an unusually quiet Saturday night. This suited me. I was recommended a dark bitter, Rutler I think, and my partner had an Otter ale. Both were great, even zesty.
We shared a tasty pot of crab, salad, and artisan bread as a starter. And we both each had a large pan-fried sea bass fillet with mango slices, which sounded a bit left-field, but it works really well! The portions of the seasonal veg were also large, and the red cabbage was also very tasty (what's the recipe?!). For deserts, I had the mini-deserts plate and my partner had the sorbet. Both delicious, particularly the chocolate truffle.
We left the pub stuffed, and had a walk around the docks, walking like heavily pregnant penguins! When next in the area we'll definitely visit this pub (which we thought was better than the nearby Tank..... :-) )
P. K.
I have been here twice, both times on stopovers between Wales and London. I originally found The Tall Ship through TripAdvisor and as it's big sell was fish and seafood - a particular favourite of mine it was a clear stand out from the list.
Stepping into what is from the outside a basic pub it is split into two parts. The pub with traditional bar is the main part and the dining room goes down the side of the building from the end of the bar to the back and is well lit by lots of windows. The staff are very friendly and the man who served the first time a couple of years ago recognized us when we came back a week ago.
The menu is not big, which is always a good sign and while most dishes are fish and seafood there are some tasty looking meat dishes too, although I have not tried them. The food is excellent and I particularly love the muscles which is done traditionally in various styles. They specialise in crab dishes, which my partner enjoyed, particularly a crab and scallop thermidor. I went for lemon sole goujons with chips which were great. The portions are generous, so much so that we struggled to finish our main courses and we were very hungry when we arrived as we had had a very light breakfast when setting off from London.
Would always happily pop back there when I am in the area as I have thoroughly enjoyed both meals there.
a. t.
Bit disappointed as our meals were not as expected. We did have high expectations as previously one of our favourite places to eat by the docks, and we like to support non-chain eateries. However they got my order completely wrong when I ordered lemon sole they delivered cod goujons, and sadly not home made as the increased prices suggest. My partner was told his meal would have turmeric mash and saffron, but sadly again this was completely wrong. For £13.95 the service & furnishings need to be upgraded, and ultimately to get the orders correct. They did offer to replace the meals in 10 minutes but I was not convinced this would be adequate time to cook fresh fish, and having waited half an hour, we were too hungry to wait any longer. Sad times
J. D.
If you like chain seafood restaurants don't come here. Quirky pub with a little side room for decent home cooked meals. Lovely well cooked fish and Real Ale.
C. M.
Great staff and fresh fantastic food.
C. W.
Stopped by for lunch after visiting the Victorian Xmas Market.
The food was fantastic at a reasonable price considering it's quality. Complemented by a good selection beers, ales and wines.
V. L.
Lovely staff, very welcoming and friendly. Food is absolutely gorgeous and well worth the money.
I also liked the decor as it's rustic, comfortable and very clean. A pleasure to eat and drink here.
A. S.
Excellent food as always.
Been a while and enjoyed the "proper job" beer rather than Wadsworth.
Really friendly staff.
a. d.
Friendly and helpful good food cooked fresh quite attentive serves more fish/shellfish than meat even thou on menu. Dogs allowed in only one room due to food. Usually has 4 real ales

Good pub that specialises in fish meals but most of all serves a great stout by Wadsworth called Corvus. We always drop in when in Gloucester. Recommended!
