K. S.Staff were very friendly as always. Ordered a challenge meal, however it definitely ended up being quantity over quality. It was to be expected to be fair as the price was very reasonable but I would not order this meal again. The fried chicken was beyond dry and the texture of the skewered chicken was like jelly. The fries were okay but the corn was very watery and overall everything lacked in flavour. I have had some nice meals over the years but would not recommended this specific challenge.
A. S.I’m not really one to write reviews, I stayed here as I was visiting a friend in uni.
The rooms where nice, a lot of people say they are outdated but I personally didn’t really see that as an issue, In my opinion as long as the room is clean and tidy it doesn’t really matter what it looks like. However, I struggled to figure out the shower which is my own fault but maybe some instructions in the room would be helpful? Also, the bathroom taps where really difficult to turn off and sometimes wouldn’t completely turn off. Apart from that, I am honestly so impressed with the waiters manners, I don’t live in Yorkshire and I’ve never received such good customer care, and I’m so impressed. Everyone was extremely kind and helpful and I have nothing bad to say about the food, price, or staff what so ever.

g. l.Eaten twice with family on the new menus in the past month the Sunday lunch was the best I have had this year I could not fault anything so I went back today and had the double dipped rib-eye and I have to say I don’t eat steak much but this is one of the best steaks I have ever eaten and again nothing could faulted

There were a lot of diners already in but we had no trouble finding a suitable table.
Staff were polite and not in a rush to take our order. The portion size was just right, and we thoroughly enjoyed the meals we had.
The pub has a spacious, welcoming and friendly atmosphere. With contemporary bright decor accented with photos of 'Old Hull'.
Car parking to the rear does seem a little restricted for the size of the place, but saying that we did get parked ok.
We will definitely be visiting again.
M. W.Amazing pub, I've been going for years the food is always fantastic and the staff are brilliant. If I could just make one suggestion though, I tried the triple stack last week and due to the steak being flattened I was informed it had to be cooked well done when it was brought to my table, this could maybe done to be advised on the menu as like most people I like my steak rare and it was difficult to eat 3x 12oz steaks as it was a little tough. Other then that amazing as always :)

B. I. u. p. A.Great price for a stay over at the end of November 2019. It is located minutes away from the University Of Hulls’ Canham Turner Hall. We West to a wedding reception in the hall, so this was perfect!! The room was clean, breakfast was excellent and all the staff very friendly.

S.Very cheap for a big meal , challenge yourself or have a nice dinner with family lots of events. Amazing place all in all and o came all the way from derby for that :)

The room was clean and well stocked, the evening meal was nice and they had gluten free bread for breakfast. Pete was cheerful at breakfast as always and most staff were really friendly. The evening waiter was a bit stressed, but it was full and very busy. Another great experience, and it all started 7 years ago when my daughter first went to the uni.

At the breakfast, I missed some fruit or fresh vegetables, but the full English breakfast was very good anyway. The rooms were quiet and cozy, I would remove that horrible moquette and renew the bathroom... A choice for one or two days.

S. C.Home from home !! Down to earth good standard of accommodation and excellent position to nearby highways , plus great secure parking included in price of stay. The atmosphere is traditional and semi modern rustic , with a good array of TV screens situated around the venue for the sport and football follower. The staff are very friendly and helpful and are quick to supply you with a good quality meal or drink at a reasonable price . There are offers on a daily basis for special meal deals and all meals really are good on price , but portions are really large so check out the sizes first as you may want to share with a partner or friend. This is a good place to dine on a budget with friends or family members , I suggest if you eat after 6.30 at weekends to maybe book a big table as Saturday nights are very popular with locals . Highly recommended.

W.Staff are lovely and engage with people when they can and it calls for it, one time they joined us in the humour of a friend attempting the ice cream challenge, the most recent time the bartender experimented with drinks with me. They do amazing very tasty food with an enormous menu that I always want more than one thing from. One thing is I wish they had more than one pool table on that top part.

Friendly and helpful staff. Easy access to city centre via buses and taxis. Decent breakfast which was included in the price of the room.

While our most recent experience hasn't been perfect (the chips were rather well done and the cashier didn't provide change where they should have) it's difficult to fault the staff and service you are given.

J. W.This is a large pub with a good choice of seat areas. Some comfy alcoves with sofas, normal tables and a lovely outdoor area round the back.
Service and food is good, good menu choices from light snacks, wraps, burgers and full meals. Portions are not huge but are adequate. Service is friendly and reasonably quick unless really busy.
I have only been here on a lunch time so can't comment on night times.
Would recommend to anyone for a lunch out.
D. S.This was my old favorite place to eat as a student. They had great food for a great price and affordable drinks too. Shortly later they got a health inspection and that didn't go great. Must have fired the kitchen staff because they began to burn 90% of the beef after that. I guess it's 'flame grilled' but still, I want to taste meat not carbon. If your just after a bit of food and a cheap boose up as a student and can't be bothered walking to gardeners then this a great spot.

S. L.Good stay especially for one or two nights but I wouldn't recommend for more than that unless it was to just sleep. Lovely little room, with a double bed although I was only given one pillow got start with and spent ages finding the other one. The rooms are nice but slightly small so would only be a good place to stay if you were planning on being out a lot. The lamp in my room unfortunately didn't work and it was already quite late until I found out so wasn't able to go to reception. The bathroom on the other hand was lovely and I really enjoyed the bath. I made use of the free tea although would have liked the option of bottled water. The food downstairs was lovely, I attempted the burger challenge and it was lovely although I wasn't able to finish it. Fair price.

M. D.Old Grey Mare is a standard chain pub which serves food. The menu isn't very varied, it seems to have gotten smaller recently.
I have had some nice food in the past, but the last three times have disappointed. Possibly due to been short staffed, the chef did come to the bar to say he had too much food ready and they needed more help getting it out, but we have had issues with meat still being cold in the centre on two visits.
They have good options on the steaks with sides and sauces and a choice of cuts.
Just hoping they resolve the recent issues and get back to how they used to be

J. D.Very mediocre food. They have a blanket "cook it medium" policy which is abysmal for a chain which is supposed to be all about the meat. The food is often dry, it's very expensive and they have a very poor selection of overpriced drinks to wash the dry meat down with.
It seems like whenever we go they have a very long, very loud and pretty dull pub quiz, which makes talking very difficult (there is no area in the whole pub without the speakers for people who don't want to take part).
Having said that, it's edible food, and at least they rarely have enough patrons to make much of a queue at the bar.

Did eat the whole thing within 40 minutes but no mention of the wall of flame so I'm assuming that has to be mentioned in advance of ordering if you want to take on the challenge.

L. S.Good location, comfortable room. Handy having food and drink on site when you've been out all day. Rooms could do with a make-over, and some light bulbs need replacing. The quality of the food was good, and staff were friendly and accommodating.

Staff are friendly and helpful too. Co - op also has an ajoyning Peacocks stir which sells lots of cloths, shoes ect.

a. t.A very sociable place, lots of capacity so no difficulty finding a table, it has a varied and reasonably priced menu so all in all a good place to call in for a meal and a drink, the only drawback was the fat little barman with the beard, he needs re training in how to deal with staff, you do not shout at bar staff in front of the customers, if they have done something that is not to your liking the correct thing to do is to take them to one side and have a quiet word not shout loudly at them in front of clients, the young girl was clearly shaken by the experience, apart from this it was an excellent night out.

N. B.Only come here as pub but nice surroundings and staff are friendly prices are like anywhere these days could always be cheaper. Menu's changed loved the fire extinguisher hot wings but aim to try the challenges.

T. m.Me as a Family of five sayed ere 27th october 2018 to meet friends ,we met in Lanzarote that live close by as we are from oldham , we found that old grey mare pub/hotel very welcoming the staff was friendly the food was amazing , kids enjoyed (11-8&2) , was clean the rooms was fab the beds were so comfortable, didn't want to get out lol ,,overall we had a really brill Stay and we already have booked again xxx

M. H.The Old Grey Mare is a flaming grill pub with a good night's Inn attached. It consists of a number of rooms above the pub. There lies the problem. The rooms are comfortable enough if a bit dated, but it is very noisy till the pub closes about midnight. No chance of an early night. However the pub itself served good food and is reasonably priced. It's well located especially for Hull University which is across the road.
