Reviews of The Whalebone

This understated pub offers a wonderful mixture of heritage (it's been licensed for over 200 years) with a modern selection of keg and cask beers displayed on Untappd screens (and blackboards). The beers have been well curated, cover a variety of beer styles and there was some decadent options from Brew York. Friendly atmosphere, informal and absolutely worth the walk from the centre of Hull. Really quite marvellous and clearly very well managed.

Travelled a long way to get their Drunken Sailor untappd badge. Good selection of craft and cask beers. Staff and locals were friendly. It is a bit on the outskirts of town . They have a load of CAMRA awards for best Yorkshire bar on the wall so they probably are pretty good at what they do.

Location: Traditional pub in an industrial area of Hull called Wincolmlee just off the river Hull. The area and vibe remind me of some of the old-school pubs in Burton-upon-Trent and you can imagine - 200 years ago - workers popping in for a pint or two after working a hard shift. Although it's in its own distinct area it is still very walkable from the city centre.
Beers: inside the beer is cask-focused with Brew York (who did make excellent cask no matter what you think of their keg) dominating. There is also a decent range of cask-ciders as well as craft-keg. In the fridge, Brew York and Sheffield's Abbeydale are well represented. There is also a range of Belgian beers and England's only Trappist beer - Tynt Meadow.
Decor/ambience: surface and regulars are very friendly. When I visited there were several solo-drinkers who were happy to chat. The pub is traditional with exposed floorboards and old pub pictures on the wall. They also have a host of paraphernalia from local sport teams.
Whalebone is comfortably one of Hull's best pubs. It's also one I'd say any serious beer drinker or pub enthusiast should have on their list. If you are into you beers and visit Hull, put Whalebone on the top of your list.

Wonderful pub with great range of beers.

A beautiful, historic pub tucked out of the way, but it's absolutely worth a visit. Brilliant and electic selection of beers (try the Titanic Cappuccino Stout!), walls decked with historic photos of Hull and its inhabitants, and wonderful staff. Clean, full of natural lighting, and a fantastic place to share a few pints.
D. M.
A lovely cosy pub with friendly staff and an excellent beer selection.
M. B.
Great pub best in the area according to all the beer awards. 7 real ales (2 dark 3 pale 2 brown bitters ) and 6 real ciders. Great staff and very friendly regular customers. Highly recommended below is the licensee 😃
M. S.
A fantastic old fashioned pub, friendly staff, local history, great customers, it always has a good selection of real ale, both cask and keg, ciders lager and spirits.
J. d.
Cosy little traditional pub. Great selection of real ales and ciders. Friendly and helpful staff. Well worth a visit
D. M.
It's a pub - simple as that. It's an unpretentious and comfortable public house. The beer is always superb but the real magic is you can have a quiet pint or chat or catch up with friends. It's a bit like being welcome in someone's home.
R. C.
Absolutely magical pub! Only popped in to ask if I could use the toilet (they said yes) but ended up staying there with a group of friends for a drink because we were so in love with it! Amazing selection of beers and ales, little games to play, really rich history. All regulars but you don't feel unwelcome. Will be back!

I am 73 and from Hull. This was my first time in this pub in all my time as a drinker. What have I missed! A traditional pub with the beer being exceptional and the right temperature. A good selection of beers with friendly staff to serve. Shame on me for missing this gem off my pub list.

What an absolutely wonderful little haven.
You wouldn't really think it from the outside, but once you go through the doors the place is alive with history! The interior is a marvelous example of the kind of heritage pub that we have lost so many of in recent years; as a result of "refurbs" or simply lost to developers. The wood panelling and old doors are dripping with memories, one can only imagine the stories they could tell from years gone by, when it would have been The Whalebone would have been surrounded by the hustle and commerce of thriving docks and warehouses.
The afternoon I visited was a gloriously sunny one and I spent a good 2-3 hours in the quaint little outside seating area, chatting and sharing stories with a number of locals who dropped by.
The bar staff were friendly, welcoming and helpful. There was a brilliant selection of cask ales on offer, which were all in tip-top condition!
Oh, and they do crisp butties too!
I left with the feeling that I had just spent the afternoon somewhere really special, somewhere I can't wait to visit again.

A bit out of the way but worth it. Decent tap and bottle selection. Free WiFi. Cheaper than a lot of the Hull pubs
S. W.
Shame there isn't a venue of this quality in the city centre. Great choice of real ale, unbeatable prices and quality service.
J.
The best public house in Hull by far, out of the way slightly and well worth having a wander through the industrial estate to get to it. A real ale pub with consistently the best kept beers in the city. Always a warm atmosphere with friendly, knowledgeable staff. Prices are very reasonable too! Keep up the great work.
R. B.
Lovely atmosphere, great choice of ales, brilliant service.
B. M. F.
Went here just for the mango cider. Very friendly atmosphere and everything you would expect from a quaint English pub. From relic bar mats to interesting beer bottles...o and the mango cider well worth the visit just for that
L. H.
I loved having a pint or two in there. Friendly staff. I didn't eat there but the food hygiene is a 4. I loved looking at the history of Hull they had 100s of photos on one side of the walls.
S. B.
Welcoming shocking public house. On the front of the whalebone it didn’t look very welcoming but once inside it’s much bigger than you think. They have traditional ales and a great variety of drinks. The locals are nice and they have friendly bar staff. Plenty of games are available from cards to scrabble. Overall one of the nicest pubs to visit in Hull!
D. B.
Very small but welcoming, lovely manager and staff
L. A.
This place can really get packed full! A warm nice place for a great drink! Staff are friendly and helpful. The manager, well you have to go meet him, one of the funniest guys I met. They have a vast selection of drinks. Maybe all the drinks!? I really enjoy this place and I hope you will enjoy it as well. Cheers, happy drinking 🍻
T. E.
a lovely blast from the past with great beer in a lovely atmosphere served by two very friendly ladies
N. G.
The definitive real ale pub of the city with a wide range of well served craft ales always available, and a quintessential Hull history and location to remember.
And now......a fantastic list of the best Continental and the best British brewers including Cloudwater, Magic Rock, Brass Castle.
A five star pub and must visit for visiting craft ale fans.
K. !.
Home style pub with great ale
N. B.
Fantastic selection of ales and cider (still and carbonated) at good prices.
Classic photos of Hull on display and a really friendly warm atmosphere, definitely worth a visit despite the quiet neighbourhood
L. H.
Honestly it's a great pub, so much character and atmosphere. It has decent prices, the staff are so friendly. Overall, it's an amazing place, a little piece of history yet up to date, deserves a lot of credit.
H. G.
Intrigued by the original M&R sign outside, I called in and discovered a most excellent pub. Friendly service, good choice of beers and a cosy, well thought out interior, with many old pictures and artifacts. I liked the many images of long gone M&R pubs in particular. I cannot wait to return! 5 star rating
s. e.
1st class old fashioned boozer. Not many like this left around.
T. S.
Timeless pub in an almost secret location, a great selection of beer and friendly staff. I was surprised to see Leffe and Blue Moon on tap, so I enjoyed a glass or two of those! Very cosy place, easy to see why it's won awards.
P. “. B.

Lovely traditional pub serving many cask ales, coders an worry. Also a nice selection of bottled Belgian ales. If you're going to see the Banksy pop in for a traditional treat 😀
R. W.
Excellent pub !! Was born in Lincoln street back in 1951 - but the place was buzzin today - maybe the Rugby !! But I was impressed with the ambiance / old pub photos on the walls takes you back and the memories come rolling back - seems the good old days are still very much prevalent at the Whalebone !!
D. K.
Great atmosphere lots, of traditional ales
M. S.
A very friendly, slightly quirky pub in an industrial area, serving traditional ales, craft beer and non-mainstream cider. Great interior too.
S. H.
Great pub, great atmosphere. Extensive selection of both ales and ciders. Will hopefully visit again soon.
S. B.
By far and away my favourite pub in Hull, the Whalebone is more than a relic of a bygone age of craft-imbued hostelry - it is a homage to that age. With a strange split-street level plan and a cosy atmosphere it is bedecked floor to ceiling with eclectica and memorabilia - old sports mags, cricket bats and most of all the ghostly images of pubs long gone from streets nearby. And the pub has a beautiful secret - it brews a wonderful tawny bitter, with the very cetacean name 'neck oil'.Sports bar it is not and it has not natural hinterland but it is a lovely pub. Long may it so remain.I heard it is for sale.A bargain to the right person. Want to brew beer and have it consumed by friendly real ale fans? This is your pub...
P. S.
