Reviews of Lord Nelson
J. L.
Amazing roast dinner!.. service was great too! Very friendly helpful staff. Will definitely be visiting again soon! Thank you 😁
B. A.
Great pub. Always enjoy visiting here - great drinks, good food, (I strongly recommend the whitebait and chips) excellent staff, not noisy. What more could you want? A great, old fashioned boozer, well off the main part of town. Been coming here on and off for years, now, and it's probably my favourite 'town' pub.
K. B.
Oh what a little gem. Fantastic service, great food what more do we need. Not on the waterfront , but not to far away, so if you fancy something a little bit traditional this is the pub to visit. There is outside seating in a quaint courtyard, I would definitely recommend the Nelson when visiting Ipswich or even a great experience for locals.
D. B.
Nice building and staff, prices grand. Avoid the cocktails, they're just poured straight from cans. Food was okay. Lord Nelson burger was nice, chicken avocado burger was not great.
f.
Great little pub right in town centre and only 10 meters from the marina. Great food and beer, the special is 3 ales for £9. During covid, lunch runs until 2, then opens back up for dinner. Need to order a meal with drinks while in Tier 2.
W. S.
Not been here for quite some time, but we went for a work lunch meal. Great service, served at the table as there was a large number if us. The food was served quite quickly, but served hot, and with plenty of taste. The burger... well, I'd say it's the best I've had in Ipswich, if not, at least in the top 2! Will be back to sample the great beer selection very soon indeed!
M. B.
Great friendly service and a vast variety of options for both food and drink. Highly recommend for both family groups and adult groups.
K. S.
Always good beer at the Nelson and it's just a lovely old pub with a relaxed atmosphere for a quiet pint or three.
J. C.
A not to busy but great atmosphere pub. It comes across a bit querky too. Not sure why. It's a really old pub with lots of character and ale served straight from the barrels. Lovely.
j. c.
Really enjoyed eating here food was lovely, friendly and polite staff, love the wooden beams a place I would recommend it, brilliant. 5 🌟
L. D.
The Nelson is a hidden gem of Ipswich. Managed superbly by Emily and her amazing team. Service is ran with a terrific cohesion. Proper home made food that is cooked with love by Beata. On top of that is a tremendous selection of drinks. What more could you want?
A. G.
Food in here exceeds your expectations about pub food, albeit a bit expensive. Good atmosphere and decent tables for the seating area. Great location, too.
L. R.
Food is really nice but strange atmosphere.
Personally won't be returning.
K. R.
Great atmosphere, lovely manager and staff, good food too
c. b.
Very nice place to relax and have a drink and meet friends, would recommend
k. m.
The place is classic place and does serve traditional and good beers,
S. B.
A pub with atmosphere, good beer, good food and friendly staff. Ale can be straight from the barrel and is well kept. Meals are reasonably priced and well cooked, children and dogs welcome. Only downside can be noise from the road outside. Small beer garden at the rear and plenty of parking near by. Watch out for the zealous parking wardens though, they don't like you parking in the wrong place!
L. B.
Nice traditional historic pub, close to the Ipswich riverside.
I. K.
A very old and attractive building. Plenty of cross beams supporting a low ceiling making for a cosy atmosphere. I'm not sure about those beers served via gravity dispense. They come out a bit flat and lifeless.
M. H.
Fabulous Traditional Pub. Magnificent Staff and a Friendly Atmosphere. Obviously one of the hidden gems of Ipswich.
C. M.
Booked at last minute when visiting Ipswich & was so pleased I did especially as it’s an Adnams pub. Really proper pub & welcoming decor. All the staff were spot on with service & friendliness. Great food (roasts) & just right atmosphere.
d. c.
One of the best pubs in Ipswich. A proper boozer - good food. Dog friendly. Log fires and friendly locals...
C. A. M.
A charming old fashioned pub very close but not right on the waterfront, so you can actually get a table on weekends when all the others are fully booked. Great onion rings, chips and a generously sized burger. Two ciders and four ales on tap. Last hot food order must be in by 1845 on Sunday but pub serving til 10.
We had a great time, staff friendly and unobtrusive. Would definitely go back...
e. c.
Went for quiz night. Great friendly local pub atmosohere.
g. s.
A proper english pub, friendly staff, good food, nice atmosphere
H. R.
Barman Adam was nice and friendly, atmosphere was good even though it was quiet
S. H.
Fantastic, i work in hospitality so am a real critic, but was really impressed with this place, the food, the service, the atmosphere top notch. Will go back. I have never had a roast dinner to this standard.
J. H.
Top pub the greatest and fantastic staff.
C. W.
It's a pub with ok beer. Although i only drink the Adnams Mosaic there because the rest is lager or cider. Lovely friendly staff though. A nice, proper craft ale would easily make this 5 star.
d. r.
Traditional old pub in the heart of Ipswich. Friendly staff and nice ambience.
J. B.
Absolutely a fantastic pub, great atmosphere, very warm welcoming from the team, and great real ale and wine. Definitely worth a visit. Can't wait to try food
C. W.
Lovely old pub great beer and nice food. Friendly atmosphere.
D. C.
Lovely pub dog friendly staff very nice
S. B.
Friendly atmosphere, relaxed, unfortunately they didn't have a chef when I was here, but the sausage roll was stunning. Recommended for a nice pint.
N. S.
Enjoyed a Saturday evening meal which was very nice. What was outstanding was the pubs attention to detail regarding Covid security, very good and felt very comfortable eating in a public area. I must also mention the exception professionalism of the three female bar staff / manager. They dealt with a few customers who did not want to abide by the house rules very very politely, firmly and professionally.
J. C.
Great place to drink real ale
J. B.
The staff have looked after us very well during our weekend away. Came back for more on Saturday as enjoyed it so much on Friday. Lovely staff all very pleasant and nothing was too much trouble. Nice house Pale Ale from their own Brewery, Hopperoni. Certainly worth a try.
m. j.
Great pub very nice food and cheap
R. T.
Very nice Sunday roast. Good service. Well worth the money.
L. C.
Felt like a proper local pub, very lively with lots of atmosphere. Not a lot of social distancing going on, but in this pub setting it was quite difficult.
J. C.
Love this pub. The open fires are comforting, the atmosphere is warm and friendly, the beer and gin choices are abundant. Lovely place for a drink. The food is very nice too, the chicken and leek pie was delicious, brilliant with a pint of Ghost Ship.
G. L.
Great time with friends awesome atmosphere great staff
N.
Only stopped in for a couple, nice place and great pint of dry hopped !
P. S.
Great atmosphere, friendly staff, good food! Would be 5 stars but for the expensive drinks!!
S. K.
Lovely pub, plenty of room but cosy atmosphere. Great location. We attended recently for the Xmas quiz and it was a fab evening. Friendly staff and the food is also great. Recommend the baked cod if it is on the specials menu!
K. H.
Had my 40th birthday here some 6 years ago. Well what a change! The interior had been freshened up, the smell from the toilets had been resolved and this place had got back a real traditional pub feel.
Have yet to sample the menu at this place but certainly will be back more often, and will be giving the menu a try.
Have only given a 4 star review only as I've not yet eaten here. I'm expecting to update this once I've sampled the menu.
O.
Good local pub, food and ales very nice. Ditch the background music playing even when football is on and I’d give 5 stars 👍
R. T.
Staff are lovely and helpful, beer is very good and the place is always warm and welcoming. Only downsides were
-how long we had to wait for our mains and desserts
-the tiny portion size for chips, chunky chips in a small container just doesn't work. I had 8 chips my partner had 7
-the fact we reserved a table for 7 and when we arrived they had only given us a table for 4. This has happened more than once
C. M.
A lovely pub and great beer.
R. O.
We stay in Ipswich fairly often and since our beloved pub the brewery tap closed down at cliff quay we have been searching for a new watering hole.
We arrived at the Lord Nelson at around 6on on a Tuesday evening. I appreciate Tuesdays can be quiet but considering this pubs location we were disappointed to see only three customers in the pub and these were sat at the bar
There was no ambience at all, no chirpy greeting from the barmaid, no banter at all at the bar by the three customers and all in all nothing that tempted us to stay, never mind eat.
Such a shame, years ago this was a thriving little pub but then the owners changed. The new owners then (complete with Rottweiler) soon put paid to our patronage and we found a different venue which has now also sadly gone.
Pubs need all the custom they can get and not everyone expects beautifully decorated surroundings but they do want decent serving staff, some atmosphere and well kept products. This pub has been decorated really well and certainly presented itself as quite clean but unfortunately that is all we got here from our list of requirements. The beer was cloudy and only just drinkable and my soft drink was offered to me with the grubby glass and the bottle with the cap removed. I could have done that myself at home. I wanted friendly service, I wanted atmosphere and I wanted a quality assured product to drink. Sadly this pub did not give us this and so our search for a decent watering hole continues. I’m sorry to sound so negative, there is nothing more I want than to patronise pubs as they need all the support they can get but it still requires some effort from the premises staff.
D. N.
Amazing pub! Staff greets you with love and kindness, food is amazing and the atmosphere is really nice!
J. M.
Lovely old pub in the centre of Ipswich. We went for Sunday lunch, and it was fairly busy. Very unusually for a Sunday roast I was asked how I'd like my beef cooked and when it came it was a perfect medium rare which cut beautifully. My wife said her roast pork was also cooked perfectly and very tender. Service was very good and friendly.
D. J. W. a. S.
Always a great little boozer to visit. Locals all very friendly
L. P.
Lovely old pub. Good atmosphere . Fires were lit. Decided to have selection pub nibbles to share. Food to die for. Good quality. Plenty off it. Just the thing for a cold autumnal evening
A. S.
Lovely dinner in the beer garden out the back. Chef very accommodating. Good traditional pub in Ipswich
L. N.
Great food and lovely atmosphere, great place to meet and chat, while enjoying a pint :)
R.
Let me tell you about lord nelson. I went I got drinks and I left. No problems, no hassle, no one trying to fight and no one bugging me for smokes. I would recommend if this bar lifestyle is what youre looking for. Good for groups and drink offs. Always responsible tho
B. W.
Great food, fine ale selection good staff too 👍
M. B.
Had a best experience there so far the place is always improving grate service and atmosphere.
J. G.
Cracking pub, friendly staff and a wonderful pint of Guinness
J. C.
Nice pub, good food, took a while to get served but was a busy night. Only let down was being seated near the door and everytime it was opened we got blasted with the cold wind from outside.
P. B.
Better than it looks, decent new team running it and it's improved as of late it has to be said. Small garden out the back which is nice in the heat but on the whole a nice little pub with lots to offer. Food is very good and the menu is a lot improved.
L. H.
Food excellent, good drinks and service
A. B.
Food was fine but expensive for what you get
J. D.
Great beer and wine choice and very good food menus
R. M.
Genuine pub grub done REALLY WELL. Very nice atmosphere, good beer. Pleasant staff. Overall we had a great night out at a reasonable price.
T. D.
Visited today with the family at short notice. A great meal with excellent service.
The two ladies behind the bar could not have been more helpful, a great credit to the pub.
G. P.
Food good staff excellent place felt homeley and drinks are great
R. M.
Our local on Thursday nights for the Scuba diving club. They serve a good range of beers and lagers. Have not been disappointed with the food either.
G. G.
Good choice of 5 ales, straight from the barrel. The Adnams Ghost Ship was perfect in every way. Friendly service and clean surfaces. Handy for Ipswich Waterfront, with cheap prices.
S. M.
Real pub. Been in a few Ipswich pubs .. This is the best of the ones we've visited. Very friendly staff. Ellie supplied a plate of gluten-free chips with melted cheese. Generous portion. As a coeliac, great to hear... "The chips are fried separately, otherwise coeliacs couldn't eat them". Wow. Beers in barrels which pleased the husband. If you're looking for a "real" pub, you won't be disappointed.
S. M.
Warm welcoming pub with great beer and real ale straight out of barrel
A. P.
One of the most traditional pubs in Ipswich. Very cozy and warm for winter nights. Good food and friendly staff.
T. B.
Good food and staff. You pay slighty a bit more for the food but worth it. Good selection of beers and wine. Cafeteria of good coffee £1.50. Definitely will return. Recommended.
P. S.
Nice family pub. Good beer and lovely bar staff
D. K.
Lovely little pub near the centre of town and a stone's throw from the waterfront. All the feel of a cosy country pub, with friendly regulars and bar staff. reasonable prices and great food!
L. A.
me and my partner came in here today for the first time and i wish id visited a lot sooner we were both so happy with our meals they were cooked to perfection the staff were very friendly and accommodating, we didn't have to sit and wait around for a member of staff to come over they were very quick, the pub has a lovely feel to it very cosy w'eve already recommended family and will 1000% come back in the future
M. S.
A great atmospheric pub with excellent beers and nice music.
F. C.
Menu is varied & delicious, served by friendly staff - a tradional pub with open fire, comfy seating with plenty of nooks & crannies.
A. E. S. L.
Wife and I had food on a sunday, burger and chips was lovely and tasty, wife's roast was a bit poor, beef was fatty. Wife only being a size 8 and a fairly small eater found the portion size quite small, especially for the price of the roast.
E. H.
Lovely oldy world pub. Real fire and comfy seats. Great atmosphere and good food. Worth a visit. Will definitely be visiting again soon.
g. b.
Fabulous traditional pub. We plan on visiting it's sister venues, The Marlborough at Dedham and the Red Lion in Manningtree which, we are told, are equally as charming.
R. B.
Normally very good but went today and found no dark beer (it is winter) only very light beer and couldn't fall back on Blackshore stout as not available so went for Southwold but definitely not in good condition, hope this not going to be the norm as I really rated the place !
H. 1.
Lovely little place with good prices and brilliant chips. The drinks are great as well. The pub is best in the evening when the fire is going.
S.
Great meal and lovely atmosphere. Nice to see a pub so full both with those there for a drink and those out for dinner.
G. B.
Food was lovely - well presented - staff attentive without being over the top 😏 Portions not large ( ideal for me though) male members of party would have liked more chips 🤔 Will go again 😍
K. l. B.
A little gem. Service excellent! Decided to venture across the road to issacs. Big mistake, too crowded . Guess what ! Headed back to the Lord nelson, bliss .
G. R.
A good place to get your favourite Adnams. Very cosy, love the seat by the fireplace !!
H. K.
Great food and very friendly. Catered for a large group
P. B.
Nice cozy place to hang out after office with friends. The fireplace just increases that cozy factor. Had gone on wednesday with friends so it was quite and loved the ambience.
A. P.
Great, true pub as it was in the 1900's (OK there is a cash register and TV now). Food and real ales and a cellar that staff have to lift up and pop down in to. If you have someone visiting from abroad then take them in the Nelson, then for a walk along the Quayside in Ipswich. Owners are really friendly too.
E. M.
Fab place, really cosy with wood burners and comfy seats and sofas. Excellent food, would recommend the veggie lasagne, delicious. Friendly staff all in all a really good place to spend a few hours.

Best local pub in Ipswich, great food and it's open mic night every other Thursday is excellent. Not to be missed a great place to drink and eat if you like a real pub
G. G.
Really cute and dainty pub. When it rains, the place does smell a little funky because of the drains, but have a few more drinks and you won't even notice it.
Z. H.
Great pub, outside doesn't do justice to the inside. Lovely homemade food and very good service from staff.
L. R.
Loved the atmosphere and staff are really friendly. A little disappointed in the vegetarian meal options. I'd definitely go again!
