Reviews of Cardigan Arms
o. s.
I honestly cannot remember the last time I enjoyed a Sunday roast as much as I enjoyed the Sunday roast at Cardigan Arms in Kirkstall. This was exceptional. As I walked in there were 3 people in front of me they had a table booked, luckily, it wasn't overly busy and one of the very friendly staff asked the chef if he would allow a walk in, (me) to which very thankfully he said yes. I ordered the Lamb Sunday roast, was served very quickly by another friendly and helpful member of staff, food came quickly (about 10 minutes wait) and I couldn't believe how much flavour there was. Looking at it, it didn't look like the sort of thing you'd get at say a Toby Carvery, and that was a very good thing, presentation and flavour 10/10. This chef deserves a Michelin star if he doesn't already have one or two of them, which would surprise me if he didn't. I enjoyed it so much, I did something I've never done before, I bought the chef a drink. I would highly recommend visiting Cardigan Arms, the staff are extremely friendly and helpful, and it's a very nice atmosphere inside. Amazing! (Edit. Just for the record, I'd already started tucking into the food before remembering to take a picture. Presentation was better than it looks in the picture. My fault)

Absolutely love this pub! It always has a warming atmosphere and I love that it's Kirkstall Brewery, the pints are always spot on. The decor is spot on, you feel like you're walking into a proper old boozer. The staff have always been friendly whenever I've visited too. I am yet to eat here but I have no doubt it'll be good! 👍
H. T.
Had a lovely meal with my son, quietly celebrating my 60th birthday. A lovely relaxed atmosphere.

Unexpected! Old style, remoderned, amazing food and great beer selection from Kirkstall brewery.
J. M.
Ate here yesterday for Mother's day lunch. To be honest, we went there because all the posh places the wife wanted to go to were full as I'd left it too late. What a great accident! The pub is awesome, a proper old fashioned boozer, the staff were excellent and welcoming and the food was brilliant. It was a very limited menu but I like that, they know what they do and they do it well. We will definitely be eating there again.
C. J.
Was pleasantly surprised by my visit - went to meet a mate for a bit of Sunday grub… stayed off the beer but a really good selection of food on the menu… new style pub grub and great staff!! Boozer with loads of character and loads of different rooms (which I always love)…
Deffo worth a look if you are in Leeds
i. j.
Lovely old pub with all original features and rooms off from a central bar. Great wine menu if not a bit on the expensive side. This pub will be quite extraordinary when it is fully refurbished, I would really love to see it then.
A. L.
Best pub in Kirkstall, maybe Leeds? Proper interior, never rowdy and loads of cubby holes to sit and hide away with your friends. Dog friendly. Not too loud, even on a Saturday night. What a refuge. Love it.
J. M.
Great Sunday roast, plus multiple Veggie options were available. Would recommend the cheesy leeks as a side!
F. T.
The food is Incredible! Excellent staff too and of course Beer 🍻

Lovely pub, really nice vibe, but always filled with students. Has kirkstall on tap and lots of vegan options (which are very expensive). Has loads of games to play with your mates, dont do the country scene puzzle though, it's a nightmare!
Pretty central to student area and nice staff as well! Toilets are upstairs though so if your disability affects your ability to get up these then be wary!
M. S.
Awesome Sunday Roast! Recommended the Portobello Mushroom & Blue Cheese Wellington by a friend and it didn't disappoint. Porchetta was bangin too. Don't miss out on the side of cheesy leeks too! Great drinking pub too mind.
S. J.
Cracking pub, s#%t load of great beers. Not been in here since it was an old tetley pub or tetnus as we called the beer. Multi roomed kirkstall brewery gem. Will deffo visit again.
T. A.
Listed grand ll. Fixtures and fittings good. 4 Kirkstall beers on . I p a excellent. helpful staff.
J. T.
Great drinks! Kirkstall Brewery's Grapefruit Virtuous is amazing. Food was nice and reasonably priced too.
C. H.
Great good for both of us. We are Both vegetarian, if.L you are looking for good honest stodge and a pint. Great pub.
S. W.
Great pub, food is very very good. Small menu but that's because the food is good quality and great service from the staff
C.
The outdoor seating area's pretty dank but overall a nice pub to grab a pint and some food. The hotdogs were nice, although I would have cooked em a bit longer myself! Can't complain about the portion sizes though, you get plenty! Staff were attentive and friendly, and they have a decent selection of beers on tap. Overall, a decent place to stop off!
W. S.
Great pub, modern beers on tap and lively place but the feeling of a local traditional pub
K. G.
Insanely large portion of loaded fries, excellent chicken wings. Helpful staff. Kind of old fashioned decor but a nice place.
I. S.
Nice atmosphere although we didn't realise Tuesday was quiz night so it was busier than expected.
J. M.
Great selection of beers and friendly staff in a fantastic historical pub.
K. F.
Great beer, a new and exciting menu....a friendly atmosphere and good banter... what more could you ask for.
J. D.
Absolutely beautiful food, amazing authentic decor, really friendly staff and plenty of choice of beers, owned by kirkstall brewery so no fosters or carlsberg!
F. M.
Enjoyed, lovely staff, fairly quiet which wax perfect. Had some food which went down well. Would definitely visit again.
W. G.
Great pub. Nice atmosphere - lots of rooms and nooks. Great local beer. Fantastic quiz.
K. L.
Great Sunday lunch with loads of veg and a truly excellent Yorkshire pudding. Served in a lovely old-school relaxed pub. Good food, great beer and lovely laid-back service. We will return 🙂.
L.
Great Victorian pub with amazing staff. My husband is disabled and nothing was to much trouble, we were literally waited on hand and foot. The bar was extremely busy and there was a great atmosphere. Covid rules were applied and staff constantly wiping surfaces. Food was not to fussy and tasted great. Worth a trip out of the centre of the city to find this Victorian gem.
D. D.
Great beer, great food. Relaxed atmosphere, friendly staff.
c. g.
First experience of Sunday lunch at Cardi Arms was absolutely banging!! The veggie option was great portobello mushroom and blue cheese Wellington I was told the roast beef was fab and the cheesy leeks were delicious all served with a great pint of beer! Fab service definitely be going back!!
M. B.
Called in for a quick pint en route for dining out, lovely 😉
C. F.
Obviously this place is notorious for its cask ales, and the couple of pints I had tonight, whilst not the best I have ever had, are certainly up there. The staff are very friendly, service is excellent & while this is an old, well used public house, it is clean & tidy, and even all the glass & mirrors in the place are spotless. I didn't eat here tonight but I saw plenty of people doing just that and I have to admit the food I saw being served looked good and the smell was very enticing. If you are expecting 5* Michelin star food and CAMRA award winning ale complete with costs in the hundreds of pounds, this place is not for you; however if you fancy excellent beer (I can't vouch for the lagers) and food of high quality and quantities above standard, and at prices such that eating here every day is a viable option, then to be honest, I can't recommend the place enough. Given that the "Aire of the dog", although now called something else, is about 100 yards away, I would choose the 'cardi' every time. It certainly beats all the food outlets over the road.
J. B.
A refurbished traditional pub still with its separate rooms around the bar, now owned by Kirkstall Brewery. V good beer and the food isn't bad either.
M. D. H.
Probably one, if not the, best pub in Leeds. Everything is excellent and with a real authentic feel. Everyone is welcome and should try it. Well done guys you truly are an example to the wider field of public houses. Triple A star in your gcses.
M. P.
A uniquely unchanged Victorian pub with a large selection of Kirkstall Ales
J. K.
A beautifully renovated historic pub with a great selection of traditional cask ales and craft beers. Exceptional staff, friendly locals and great pub food. Perfect for pre cinema drinks. Can definitely recommend.
j. s.
After previous outings to the jumpers legs and the jackets hands I can confirm that this is best of all the garment limb based pubs in the area
j. h.
Nice pint on a early Thursday evening and a few people in good to see that it's local brewed as they have all Kirkstall brewed drinks
L. S.
A lovely little pub with local lagers and IPA's. The staff were lovely, great service!! The Sunday lunch was fantastic!!! As was the cheesy leeks and sticky toffee pudding. Great value too!! Definitely worth popping in 👌👌
S. o.
First ever visit to this lovely old pub with original features and a cosy atmosphere. The staff were warm ,welcoming and friendly and attended to all our needs , highly recommended and we shall certainly call in again in the near future. Thankyou to the wonderful staff
A.
I can't decide which was nicer out of the staff and the food!
E. 1.
How a pub int uk should be! Victorian style retaining its warm atmospheric character an with a few modern touches here an there!
Choices of real ale on tap are so content full 😍🍻🍺
J. G.
We bad a superb Sunday Lunch here, absolutely recommend the Cardigan.
t. s.
The beer is excellent the pub also has a good feel. The food is also excellent. Along with the bridge inn this is one of the best pubs in the area.
P. O.
LOVED it. The interior is absolutely stunning, great service, tasty pub grub with LOADS of veggie and vegan options! Kirkstall beer on tap which is top notch too. Definitely would go again!
J. C.
Wow, I used to be a regular here in the 90’s. Then it was vibrant with a mixed clientele and real ale - a proper pub with authentic decor, glass and tiles. But then it slipped and slid further and further into horribleness. Well it’s back and sells Leeds’ best ale - Kirkstall Breweries. Food looks good too.
R. S.
Wonderful Victorian pub with great charm & fabulous mirrors. Great beers from Kirkstall Brewery too.... recommended.
B. D.
Strongly recommend this pub. It has a great proper pub atmosphere. Very friendly. Feels very safe, and local - in a positive way. Had food for the first time in April '19 and it was excellent. Great value, good portion size. Biggest selling point is the beer, of course. Kirkstall Ale, perfectly served. Helpful, friendly bar staff.
M. N.
Just a good old fashioned pub. No frills.
Great choice of hand pulled beers.
Highly recommended.
H. L. (.
Compelled by good reviews I popped by and was greeted by a very old school type pub with several small areas and a genuine rustic feel. I ordered a vegetarian dish and I wasn't disappointed. This place seems to pride itself on the pub grub and the results were very respectable.
A. S.
Love this pub! Great food and drinks (you must check out their Sunday lunch)! They always have friendly staff who are attentive at the bar.
E. B.
One of my favourite bars in Leeds. Great selection of local ales and beers, delicious bar snacks (their sausage rolls are pretty top notch) and the staff are always friendly. It can be a little poorly lit after hours, but it's always warm and welcoming
L. S.
Booze is OK. Service wasn't rude, but done with a "ordering is done on the app, sit there and use it" approach.
Some people don't like using apps. Some people don't have the required technology and frankly, since you're sat about doing naff all, you could probably just take an order at the table like a human would. (It was dead.)
If this is an option, it isn't made obvious by the dictatorial attitude.
C.
Large but still cosy, good ale. Limited food menu that seemed high priced for some (sandwiches comes to mind) items. Though they are trying to be on-trend. I haven't tried the food as they do have a lot of good competitors in the area as well as food chains. Did I mention the GOOD ales? A lot brewed locally in Kirkstall.
M. R.
Went to see Apollo Juction there and it was amazing!! What a band!!
K. S.
Great vide, the staff were exceptionally helpful. Ordered a couple of pints and were made aware that it was their more expensive beer before serving it to me. Had a lovely chat with the staff and the rest of the pub was full and cheery. Chunky chips 👌
D. P.
The new and improved Cardigan Arms is a very nice place to have a beer with friends and unwind after a long day. I have had enjoyable evenings here multiple times since Kirkstall Brewery took over. The beer is good quality and while there has clearly been some significant work to improve the interior, it is very much still a warm and welcoming pub. I really like the different rooms providing slightly different atmospheres, the darker candle-lit room is nice for a late night drink, while the dog-friendly area is just the ticket for a weekend afternoon.
My only criticism of the pub is the food menu. I have been previously quite impressed with the same breweries offerings at Kirkstall Bridge down the road, but it feels like the same quality of offering has not been translated as well here. At the time of writing there has been a recent shake-up of the menu but I still feel it has some way to go to hit the mark.
I would however still highly recommend this pub and am very happy that there is now somewhere quality and local for me and friends to meet and drink.
G. J.
Fantastic pub, wide selection of beers and delicious food, including vegan options. Staff are always welcoming and friendly. Very good distancing measures in place also
M. T. M.
Nipped in for Sunday afternoon dinner and a pint, roast lamb was amazing! Quick pint to wash it down. . Nice big pub, quite a good selection of beers, and good staff to round it off.
C. F.
I really like this place! Great food (and vegan options), they honestly make the best chips and burgers. Really lovely service and great atmosphere. I've been a few times and will definitely continue in the future.
S. M.
Great beer selection and good atmosphere
A. W.
Really is just "ok". Kirkstall brewery pub with reasonable selection of their own beers and a few guest beers. Prices a little high for most of the nice guest ones though. Food (I had a burger) is actually pretty good for pub food. Nice building, seems to be intentionally dimly lit but makes it look a bit dingy at times. Often very busy and can be difficult to get a table in evening. Often have guest music which is a good idea but mostly too loud and not great quality.
M. H.
Delicious Sunday Lunch
Excellent meat, great veg, cooked with care, not just your boiled up carrots here, these have been slow roasted so the sugars really come out. The shared cheesy leeks went too fast for me to get my fork into but they looked very good. Better than I could do!
B. F.
Friendly staff, great food! The creamy leeks were fab!!
Didnt have to wait too long!
Ladies toilet nice and clean!
D. G.
I walked in expecting one of the following:
A grimy pub selling only carling, Stella and dark fruits.
Or
One of those pubs where they have 12 ales, all kept terribly and gone off to some extent.
What I found was a lovely looking pub with relaxed decor, delicious food and a few really well kept delicious beers.
K. w.
Friendly staff, great atmosphere.
G. S.
Wow, like stepping back in time this little gem of a Victorian pub with period features is a must visit if you haven't been already. Nice to see craft ales on tap rather than the usual generic beer on offer in most establishments
C. M.
Great Kirkstall Brewery pub. Beautiful exterior and interior. Six well kept real ales and fine keg ales/pilsners. A must see if you are in West Leeds. Far better than it was a few years back.
A. M.
Fantastic pub - a classic old-fashioned British boozer which has recently had a sympathetic restoration to retain its original period features whilst making it comfortable and welcoming to a wide customer base. Fantastic beers from across the globe, coupled with friendly staff and excellently prepared bar snacks make this pub a must visit for anyone in the area looking for a relaxed, dog friendly gem of an ale house!
K. W.
Such a good pub! All the different rooms mean there's always somewhere to sit that will suit your mood. The beers are always kept well and the staff always serve quickly. Doggos are welcome too and mine always settle in here well when I visit. 20/10
E. A.
Great pub with great beers kid friendly and dog friendly too. Staff knowledgeable about beers and are always happy to help. My girls 3 and 4 love Alice who works there and find the pub relaxing and can sit and unwind they serve food here too but check when it open. Well worth a visit
L. Y.
Victorian-style pub, now under the management of Kirkstall Brewery. I must say, I live near the Bridge, so I feel that the selection there is better. Still, this pub is cosy enough, and the beer is alright.
M. S.
Nice relaxed pub and nice beer
T. F.
My sister and I chose this venue as the location of my mum's 60th birthday, and we couldn't have been happier with the service or the atmosphere. The upstairs room is spacious and lent itself well to the buffet that was put out. The food was beautiful and there was plenty of it! Can't speak more highly of this pub, and not being local myself, I look forward to returning over the Christmas period.
P.
Great choice of beers, amazing sausage rolls and a really good atmosphere.
D. S.
Wonderful example of Victorian pub architecture. This pub has been in the doldrums for several years under the ownership of Greene King but has been brought back to life in wonderful fashion by Kirkstall Brewery. 8 real ales on pumps plus food and other beers
I. J.
Wonderful Victorian pub with a fine selection of local beers and great food
A. C.
Amazing bar, with such a rich history. Great choice of drinks and excellent staff
M. “. F.
First time I have been in since refurbishment. Love it! Great selection of beers, nice ciders and a small but inclusive food menu to boot. Good for a quiet drink through the week.
j. h.
Love it here. The staff are so great. The beer is fantastic. I need to come for some vegan food though! Dog friendly and I love the rooms and decor and branding. Top stuff
D. v. R.
Cardigan arms is definitely my favourite pub in Leeds. The beer is always on point and the building/decor is really interesting. Always a good crowd, plus the food is banging. Only downside is the outside space is quite small but there’s not much they can do about that really.
L. J.
I've loved this place since my father took me here 25 years ago, I'd recommend this place to anybody.
J. W.
Mice friendly bar and the good is gorgeous?
S. W.
Best Sunday dinner ever do wish taken a photo. Right amount of veg carrot parsnip roast potato green cabbsge. I had lamb was delicious.
ordered cheezy leeks on the side to share just great will try to copy them for home roast dinners. Saying all that about the good food the service was very good too. Pretty busy make sure you book. Look forward to next visit.
L. A. S.
The interior of this place is something else absolutely beautiful panelling and features spread over a large number of rooms. Well worth a three or four pint visit which means leave the car at home.
J. W.
Nice - great pub, excellent staff, top beerage - Keep it open forever. Everything is in order as per usual. Try not to impress in the Cardigan - not a place for cool cruisers, amateurs or posers.
A. V.
Nice relaxed but busy pub. Great beers from The Kirkstall Brewery and the food is excellent. Staff all very friendly and helpful.
D. E.
Update: went here for sunday roast and I had the vegan option. The food was very good quality and well cooked but under seasoned. Everyone on our table with meat or veggie roasts also said their food was very under seasoned. The vegan yorkshire pudding wasn't good need to change the recipe or method there! What was really annoying was the bright light coming through the window in the room we were in. Everyone in the room was squinting and I had to swap seats as it was giving me a headache. Same thing happend last time I was in there several months ago. Need to get a blind or something as it's really uncomfortable and sort of ruins the experience. Only relief is when a bus drives past and then you can see again for a split second!
Prev review: This place used to be terrible a few years ago but is really nice now. They have a small menu but they have veggie options. The chips are really good here and it's a lovely traditional pub inside.
S.
Good beer, nice atmosphere, friendly bar staff. What's not to like?
R. H.
Lovely wine and beer, a tad dark and dingy inside but we'll spaced out. Outside was lovely.
A. G.
Really great job in this place. Great beer and food menu. The evening we went there was Xmas sausage and stuffing on sticks and roasties free on the bar. What's not to like?
G. B.
Great old style pub with plenty of beer choices.
C. B.
The Cardigan Arms has a nice, friendly atmosphere. The food is very nice too, although if you're hoping for one of the vegan options you might be best ringing ahead to make sure they have them in stock.
M. L.
Building has been restored but retains all original/period features. Great beer and service, but I wouldn't expect less from the Kirkstall Brewery team.
T. M.
Great local; dog friendly, awesome food, amazing staff! Great selection of locally brewed beers (Kirkstall Brewery) can't recommend highly enough.
N. C.
A proper pub, not many left these days, and with Kirkstall Brewery taking over the beer is high quality, good range too. Friendly, welcoming and well worth a visit.
L. K.
food was excellent, really good chips and sandwiches cooked well. Great drink selection and atmosphere. Could have food and drink and hear each other for a chat. Friendly staff.
P.
Love this pub, excellent range of beers. Awesome staff definitely be back when we can.
R. P.
A gem in LS4 - after probably 15 year the Cardigan Arms is back after a steady decline and the scare if a community take over.
Doff my cap to Kirkstall brewery returning the Tetley heritage pub to its original glory.
Amazing beer , great artisan food, Jazz of a Sunday.
Happy to have my local back 🙏
J. B.
Great Reuben sandwich, great beer and a beautiful building.
A. E.
Cardigan Arms is a lovely pub as pubs should be. Thanks for a lovely pint 🍺.
A. N.
Used to be a good old fashioned pub ,On the face of it it is still that same pub but once you get in there you find it full of trendy hipster types drinking their ipa brews and real ales no main stream beers or lagers like you usually find .I was a little disappointed that the place had changed so much
P. M.
Tastefully improved both attractive and comfy yes and even friendly. All kirkstall beers even lagers(2).Nice night infinitely superior to the past WELL DONE .And there are quite a few other people who think so...
C. R.
Great local 'Kirkstall Pale Ale' brewed in West Yorkshire, polite staff. Cosy quiet areas to sit if you're reserved like my self.
B. P.
Food isn't the cheapest but the quality is great. Good selection of local ales too
A. I.
The Kirkstal lot have brought this place back to life and done a great job. I have hazy memories of this place as a student 20 yrs ago and they were not good but under kirkstall brewery management this place is super. Good food, ace beers and dog friendly
N. C.
Love a traditional pub! Didn't eat here, but good selection of Kirkstall Brewery beers
R. C.
Excellent choice of drinks it's an old fashioned pub that needs a bit of attention cleaning in the toilet and a bit of heat in the place would not go a miss
J. S.
Good local beer and a nice traditional Victorian pub. A refreshing alternative to the modern restaurants in the Kirkstall leisure complex across the road.
R. B.
Proper old school pub with many rooms, great place to stop off at after the cricket
B. B.
Nice pub. Will be back.
R. S.
V Good beer selection. Food currently limited in scope but full menu promised soon. Quiet on a lunchtime. Good parking close.
D. B.
Fantastic traditional pu, good food and excellent Kirkstall Ales
D. O.
Nice pub. Similar to the adelphi in style but a better beer selection. Prices reasonable and good food.
J. T.
Great beer and nice atmosphere
S. P.
Good atmosphere, a lively evening crowd and a good range of beer. More expensive than the Kirkstall Bridge Inn, but that comes with being that much closer to central Leeds.
J. T.
Was great looks nice and old beers cold
D. D.
A proper real ale pub with a wide selection of drinks. Newly taken over but still has that yesteryear feel about it with multiple small rooms to sit in. Live bands play now and again.
j. H.
Turned a dated old pub into something a bit more up to date but with lots of character. Good beers, food looked nice (Didn't eat but I will next time)
E. A.
Great to see this pub back on its feet. Great beer, good food and a lovely classic interior. It's a gem.
R. F.
Really friendly bar staff, wide selection of beers and ales. Sadly only 1 cider at the time x
K. M.
After being taken over by Kirkstall brewery it no longer feels like a rough pub. Redcorated with a good selection of craft ales now. Very cosy now
D. O.
Really nice pub with a good crowd, lacks a useful outside to sit though. Good choice if beers though and friendly staff.
p. F.
Chilled out place good pub food and nice staff ,try the homemade sausage rolls you will never but shop bought again .😃
j. t.
