Reviews of The Chemic Tavern
J. C.
Hasn't changed since my student years which are so very long ago now. Thay's a compliment. Very cosy and casual with great beers on tap. Lovely traditional pub x
S. V.
Great traditional public house. Fine selection of draught beer and cider. Does not serve food but if you ask you may bring in food from the many establishments around the area.
M. L.
Quite simply, the best pub in Leeds. It's warm, safe, cosy, happy, quintessentially pubbish. Wooden everything. Random board games on tap. You come in for one drink and three hours later you're grinning as you watch some old boys play fiddles under a ceiling that's about 5 feet high. If you want a quiet drink and some time to yourself you can have it. If you want a random but exciting conversation with a stranger about Martian conspiracy theories you can also find this here. Music, quizzes, bringing down the government, COMMUNITY. People get together at the Chemic and things just happen!
T. T.
Great Place to spend a New Years eve! In pub DJ had the best tunes and the ladies behind the bar were brilliant!
C. S.
One of my local pubs with quirky old school charm, there is an ever changing range of guest beers, lagers and ciders as well as a really good standard choice. The guiness was also good as being such a warm day! Just a note there is no food served here but you are more than welcome to bring food in from the fish and chip shop next door.
W. t. B.
The pubs nice, with nice staff, but confusion over the service, masks and website drinks ordering put me off, we sat there for 10 minutes confused over how to even get served, there appeared to be only one member of staff serving but it's a nice pub
S. B.
We went for the Star Trek quiz and has a fab time. Could do with a bit of a spring clean but all in all a good traditional pub.
D. D.
Lovely place; Feel really safe when you visit as they're currently spot on with all the track and trace stuff. But let's hope it gets back to normal soon... x
D. N.
Lovely little boozer, tucked away next to a decent chippy. Full of olde worlds charm. Even if some of the live music is ropey at best.
M. W.
Good neighbourhood pub. The kind of place we all wish we had nearby. This is among the best places within a mile of Leeds city centre.
C. S.
To feel music is what i discovered at Chemic. Best place for music and drinks.
L. Y.
We're here more for the company than anything else. Very cosy pub, and the good thing about it is that you can eat your fish and chips from next door or get a pizza. Not a huge range of beers, but they're usually of decent quality, and in very good condition (cask marque). Anna and Kit are sweet.
S. D.
Never had a bad night. Great crowd, awesome beer, owners are ace and you can even bring your own food to keep it on the cheap.
Range of events that are genuinely open to all. Inclusive, full of joy and humanity. Honestly the best local regardless of the millage it takes.
S. E.
It's a friendly welcoming pub with a sister & brother run service. It's old fashioned inside & very clean. It's a small pub but does have music & quiz nights. It has no TVs but always background music..
C. H.
I love this pub. It's friendly and they have a wide selection of interesting drinks. They let you bring food from the nearby fish and chip shop or other take away places in as they don't do meals. Tables outside, plenty of parking. An old fashioned proper pub.
E.
Nice atmosphere. Had a chat with the owner who was lovely. Bar staff were also really great. Went to an open mic night to help out with Mark Connors performing who was great. Not enough seating for everyone who wanted to attend but everyone was friendly. However young women keep an eye out as I was harassed by a man that night and made to feel unsafe, got the feeling he was a local.
G. R.
Great dog friendly pub! I take my dog here for a pint on regular basis.
j. a.
Great proper English pub, with an amazing selection of ale and a his of speciality gins and whiskey's. Bar staff are really friendly and actually had a non alcoholic beer on tap. We went to the open Mic night they have once a month, which showcased a very high standard of talent. And is clearly popular with locals and Leeds students.
Can't speak for the Gents but the Lady's loos are also beautifully and uniquely decorated, worth a trip on their own!
They have a car park at the rear but that was not brilliantly sign posted. The it reason this pub has lost a star in it's review is that access in a wheelchair is Incredibly difficult. I used my stick instead but if you are a full time chair user this place is sadly not for you.
I. D.
Genuinely such a lovely warm welcome from the team at The Chemic Tavern on their Open mic night last night! The drinks are cheap, the atmosphere is cosy and has proper Yorkshire pub vibes! Highly recommend and I'll deffo be returning!
G. J.
I was walking through the East End of London last week, and noticing the near total disappearance of the back street boozer that still existed in my 1980s youth.
The Chemic reminds me of that particular golden era of pubs; indeed it was my local for a few years back then when I lived in Woodhouse.
Don't take its existence for granted; use it!
You will find that it is a wonderful thing.
S. T.
Great pub, not a "student" type pub which is the norm for the area, but students are very welcome. Something for everyone here and is dog-friendly too. Great selection of beers and sprits, and you can bring in fish 'n' chips from next door (Arkwrights) varying types of music on most nights, look at their website for more info.
T. P.
Fantastic local pub with friendly bar staff. You can also take your fish and chips in to enjoy with a pint. Also make sure to pop along on the Thursday open mic nights for a guaranteed nice evening.
C. Z.
Warm, friendly, beer kept well and it's round the corner. A proper local!
S. B.
I've started contracting in Leeds for a major bank. My colleague and I have visited this pub each evening on our (slightly diverted...OK very diverted) way back to our airbnb. It's an old skool boozer the likes of which are difficult to find.
The staff and who I assume to be landlady are pleasant and personable. They have a good selection of beers and a nice environment to sit and discuss the day.
It says clearly that you will be asked to leave if you bring your own booze (why would you?) So the negative review I read is clearly nonsense. I have seen a variety of clientele in this establishment so don't be put off. It's brilliant
T. H.
The Chemic is a great place to drink. The pub has struggled to stay open over the years as the area has changed which has meant that in order to attract customers it has some of the most varied and interesting entertainment on offer in all of Leeds. Music, retro auctions, exhibitions, cabaret acts, reggae nights etc. Pub dub is a great free night with dancing until late.
H. S.
An essential Leeds pub. The people who run it are fantastic, and they have created a homely pub in the inner city with its own quirks. Music nights ..quiz nights. Usually there's a pub dog. Lovely .
T. C.
The chemical tavern is a very nice quiet pub where you can sit down and have a pint or two. There is no t,v,s just back ground music also dog friendly different event every day with Irish folks night on Wednesday open Mic night Tuesday, fish and chips shop next door no probem takeing url fish and chips in the pub, staff very friendly. I would give it a 10out 10
J. A.
One of the remaining authentic cosy community pubs in Leeds suburbs. It isn't lowest common denominator male centric sky-sports+Carling dives as many are, nor is it a pub in name only like many of the gentrified dining rooms there are around. It's a proper pub hangout, books, board games, traditional features, friendly staff and locals of different ages and classes and gender who will talk to you and share their stories. Prices are reasonable, and the beer choice is ok, cask ale is well kept. In Sheffield a pub like this is ten a penny, in Leeds it is gold dust. Use it or lose it!
R.
Best pub in Leeds.
The staff are wonderful and friendly - you can bring food from next door.
A quaint and under-rated place. Defently a wonderful landmark in Woodhouse.
Come and have a pint
H. S.
Friendly staff, lovely live music, but wish there's was outdoor heating or umbrellas.
J. L.
Friendly real ale pub where you can bring in your dog, play a board game, eat fish and chips from next door or watch live music. Good all round local pub.
B. W. (.
First visited this place just over a month ago and I've been back every week since. It has such a lovely, cosy atmosphere and there are loads of books and games you can help yourself to if you want to do something a bit more. Yet to go to the quiz on a Monday night but it is definitely on the agenda.
S. B.
Real traditional pub, they have an arangement with Arkwright's fish and chip shop next door, do we ate fish and chips whilst enjoying the local ale. Staff very friendly and dogs welcome!
B. W.
The staff are absolutely lovely and the weekly pub quiz Mondays is amazing xx absolutely love the alcoholic ginger beer as well 👌
L. U.
Perfect pub on a cold winter day. It's cosy, warm and always welcoming. Great events and plenty of outside seating as well
D. S.
Lovely atmosphere, usually a group of people playing music. No food served but right next to a chippy and you can bring food inside to eat. 5/5
P. M.
Been going this pub for years. Never had a bad night, lovely people, lovely pub. Good beer and good prices. Good event and music! A real pub. Not many like this left.
h. s.
Amazing authentic food and friendly staff, brilliant coffee too.
D. T.
Great pub. Both the staff and regulars make you feel very welcome and the beer is top notch!
T. B.
Brilliant local pub. Great for any occasion as full of board games and welcoming staff that make you feel like a local. :))
C. C. H.
Lovely local pub, good brews and friendly staff
C. M.
The review below by kelly b is total rubbish. Firstly there is a difference between stealing and confiscation. Her and her friends were caught drinking their own alcohol in a pub which would not be tolerated in any bar or pub in the country. She then caused a large scene and exhibited threatening behaviour toward the staff. Which leads me on to my second point. Kelly b, the police would no doubt like to speak with you and your friends regarding the theft of my property (which was on loan to the pub), in which you were a participant. I'm guessing the alleged "disability" didnt deter you and your friends from committing theft too much then?? The only real victims out of kelly b's visit to the chemic tavern were me and the pub itself all because she and her buddies are morally inept. The Chemic Tavern is a brilliant place run by a friendly Landlady and serve a wide variety of alcoholic beverages. This pub is a community central point and i have made lots of friends there. I would just also like to say the pub staff were extremely supportive and helpful throughout everything. I wish them all success.
R. L.
Kelly's review below is an interesting work of fiction. Anyone thinking of taking her review seriously should note that she was not the target of any racial or ablist abuse, but was asked to leave when caught drinking her own booze and started an argument at the bar instead of peacefully going on her way. I happened to be stood next to her when she kicked off. At the time she denied drinking her own booze so it's good that she now admits to it. She then went on to steal an antique mask that had been lent to the pub to serve as decoration for an event they'd held the previous night.
It's also interesting that the only activity on her Google account is her single negative review. Almost like she just had an axe to grind because she was angry at having made a public fool of herself.
Rest assured the Chemic is not a place that tolerates racism or ablism.
B. P.
Friendly staff, loads of seating inside and out and a resident cat with its own ale named after it !
N. C.
Small and cosy with a great atmosphere. Love that they have a resident cat (captain) that patrols the place to make sure everyone is behaving themselves after plenty of craft beers and ales!
s. f.
Cosy local melting pot full of eccentrics. Very relaxed and you bring your own food in. The chip shop next door provides the perfect accompaniment to a pint.
K. L.
Nice pub with a friendly, local feel. Health and safety during the firework display was lacking a bit but no-one was injured and I would visit again
I. B.
Always great in here. We were made really welcome when we hired or the back room, too. Staff were great fun even when under pressure during busy periods.
S. A.
Went back in time and ate our Fish and chips, which we had bought next door, with good beer in a cosy environment! Highly recommendable!
E. G.
This is absolutely the most gem of a pub you could ever wish for. Fantastic, friendly staff, eclectic clientel. The best, love it.
G. J.
Like a village pub in the city. Best pint of Black Sheep I've ever had. And you can take your fish and chips in from next door.
A. S.
A bit disappointed coz the pub said the fireworks will start at 2130 but for some reason it started at 2100. Well. We will missed it nevertheless we had a good time. No pale ale but still alright.
S. E.
A local pub with good ale at a reasonable price. Lovely atmosphere and friendly bar staff. Well worth a visit.
P. B.
Really good place! Friendly staff and a Fabulous atmosphere. Proper pub!
K. F.
A good old school pub with friendly staff and a range of clientelle through millennials to baby boomers. I'm almost regretting recommending the place to everyone, but it's not like one little review's going to make the place 10x busier!
S. G.
