Reviews of The Golden Beam - JD Wetherspoon
G. M.
Large Spoons in a beautifully restored former Girl's High School building. Main seating area bright and spacious, with plenty of tables. Toilets and a darker balcony area upstairs. Very busy around midday on a Sunday, packed with people who were either finishing breakfast or had come for an early lunch. Had BBQ chicken, bacon and Cheddar cheese panini & Baked Potato with Cheese. Typical Spoons fayre. Tasty and great value for money, although some of the salad served with the baked potato tasted a bit foisty. Friendly staff, quick service and tables cleared quickly as people left, but not cleaned down. Will definitely return again.
E. C.
This place is massive! I couldn't quite believe how big it was inside . There is a large garden terrace and two floors of tables. There are so many drink options with beers on draft to endless spirits. Prices are really cheap too . What a brilliant new venue. They have lots of the history of the building and location up on the wall in the bathroom. Interesting to read about!
A. J.
Went on a Saturday night so was obviously very busy! However the atmosphere was buzzing and nice. The staff were organised and quickly subdued any rowdiness. The app to order table service worked well. We only went for a few drinks but overall it was a good experience. One thing that let it down for me was that there weren't many large tables available, so as a large group we had to push a couple of tables together which was a bit awkward.
S. W.
Fantastic example of why Wetherspoons have a place in the pub business - a beautifully restored historical building, good service, app easy to use, friendly staff, great prices and decent choice of food & drink, clean too!
O. L.
I really like this wetherspoons! Its very unique, love how massive and spacious it is, the decoration is really cool and features old pipe organ electronic circuit boards that they found in the building, along with restored version of the pipes of the organ itself. Also, there is a massive window at the back of the building, where the sun comes in and you can see the sunset's beautiful colours, if its a clear sky. Every time I been in so far it has been a nice, cosy and relaxed atmosphere, not to mention that they also have a fireplace that they actually use!
P. D.
Impressive, huge new Wetherspoons. Lots of space, big yet still comfortable. A truly remarkable restoration of a fine grand building... Outdoor drinking space, and a car park too.
J. M.
Beautiful big open space for sitting inside and outside. Nice staff. Typical cheap and cheerful spoon prices. A shame about the standard of cleaning out tables
d. g.
The food was good but I went with a friend who had mobility issues. A long walk from the car park and there were very few tables downstairs suitable for her as a lot of them are too high. Halfway through our meal another customer asked us if we had a car because she had received a fine that morning relating to a previous visit. Apparently you have to enter your car registration onto a computer system that is situated at the far end of the bar. A notice informing you about this would have helped or advice from the staff.
A. G.
Very clean and welcoming, and another of the stunning buildings that Wetherspoons have acquired.
The value for money aspect of their menus is almost impossible to beat, but the downside is that as a customer, you have very little interaction with the staff!!
We did however have a point of complaint with this particular establishment, as a drink ordered by accident was changed (and it’s replacement paid for) after being told we couldn’t remove it from the premises as it had been opened?? one of our party of four decided that rather than waste it, they would have it, so returned immediately to the bar, only to be told that it had been disposed of!!
Most annoying!!
However, that aside, our meals were cooked to order, and delivered very quickly. The staff were polite and friendly, and this particular building had the smartest, cleanest toilets I have ever seen in a restaurant!!
P.S. As a word of warning, I returned home last night to find I had been fined for using the car park to the rear of the property. This is not well signposted, and I don’t believe I have parked illegally. I will be taking this up with management, as it is most annoying!!
J. B.
Breakfast today excellent, great staff, warm fire and really hot plates. Called in for a late supper, staff less interested, cold room - had to keep coats on, food good but plates freezing, didn't want to finish it. Excellent drink range at very reasonable prices.
C. R.
Really nice food, good portion. The environment is really nice, amazing building.
B. C.
Beautiful former school with high 30ft ceilings. very quiet for Breakfast on Sunday morning with a bit of space for the kinds to explore (quietly). No Brown bread (which is all my daughter eats)...come on Wetherspoons its the 21st century. Breakfast for 3 with drinks for under a £10.
S. M.
Lovely , clean, friendly festive and cosy .Food presented well instead of been thrown on a plate
R. S.
Your usual wetherspoons but in a beautiful renovated building. This place really stands out and looks amazing compared to other branches.
The staff were friendly, food and drink was spot on.
The wait times for food when it was quiet was a bit long but this could be because they're new and getting used to the tables/system. I'm sure it'll improve with time.
One star lost for the WiFi being hit and miss. This isn't usually an issue in today's world but when they rely on people using the app and the building blocks a lot of mobile data due to the structure, the WiFi needs to be consistent. It constantly kept dropping so made it hard to order but it can still be done. Improve this and everything will be smoother 👌
R. M.
Love the building, the art on the walls, the staff and the atmosphere. Also love the fact that they care about the local architecture wherever they plant a pub. Thank you for not demolishing beautiful old character buildings.
M. E.
A well presented and homely venue, with great seating areas for all manners of meet up. Always good prices and increasing amounts of weekly night offerings such as pub quiz and board game nights.
J. C.
Breakfast came pretty quickly ... hence bacon dry and frazzled ..... spoonful of beans and dried up egg!
Not a patch on other Wetherspoons with a brilliant Breakfast.
Car park at back of building so a fair walk to front to get in .... not good for the old man with cranky legs.
G. P.
Proper student pub. Big room lots of choices on the beer front. We went to meet our nephew who is a student at Leeds university. Be care in the carpark. You need get a receipt from the bar to confirm you made a purchase. We got a parking ticket. £75 if you don't pay in 14 days. £45 if you do. With a receipt with your reg on it you are okay.
D. M.
Very nice and attentive staff fussed over my nephew who we took for the first time for his 16th birthday breakfast. He has Downs' and was put at ease by all. Thank you.
d. b.
Done a delivery here. Very tight place to get to.
I had a lovely breakfast and the staff was pleasant and helpful. Thanks for the food guys hope to see you again soon.
H. G. L.
Never been but read about them limiting a tik tok idiot who made fans send things Inc food and drinks which resulted in delays for other customers. Absolutely amazing job staff did for initially accomadating as best as they could but then knowing when the limit should be and not continuing the stupid behaviour....
T. M.
I like that the standard of Wetherspoon branches are the same. Fast service as usual. I believe that the Golden Beam is the has the most beautiful interior of all the Four Wetherspoons I have visited.
M. T. N. G.
Really well kept for a spoons, especially when its in a student area. Food was standard spoons, does the trick. Staff really friendly and speedy.
G. C.
Very tasteful transformation of a local landmark. Excellent building saved and re purposed. Good beers and food as usual!
C. D.
Very large clean and impressive set up.. Toilets were spot on and clean(gents) enjoyed our visit, thank you
G. G.
Decent Spoons on the afternoon we visited. A big old interesting building, friendly staff. What's not to like?
J. C.
Well done Tanisha for dealing with scumbag influencers. If you work/worked for a pub, you’d understand how hard working we are in the hospitality industry. Give that lass a payrise, Spoons!
A. S.
Beautiful 'spoons building with a spacious open plan bar area. Outside drinking area too. Large efficient kitchen as well, and well staffed at the bar.
N. P.
a bit busy but a fun place to hang out in public, great for a small group outing with no more than 4 people
D. G.
Fab new Wetherspoons in Headingley. Massive inside with a great eye to details of the building.
T. G.
A relatively new, large and spacious bar / pub food - a typical Spoons! In an early 1900's garde 2 listed building. Small car park to the rear (about 25 spaces) and some side street parking.
Frequented by students from the Leeds and Headingley area.
P. H.
Popped in for a meal today, the building has been well refurbished, looking fabulous. My grandson had a burger which he was happy with, I had a cauliflower curry which was not good. Service was good, staff very pleasant and accommodating.
D. S.
Great to see this old building refurbished to such a high standard. Wetherspoons deserve full credit for helping preserve neglected places that others seem unwilling to take on.
T. T.
Went for breakfast and can't complain at all. Service was fast and efficient and food was served quickly. Food tasted great. Will definitely be returning
K.
Very busy when we arrived. Amazing value meals which include a drink. All vegan /vegetarian food except pizza was off the menu.. so I had pizza much to my dismay, but couldn't complain for the price and it was quite tasty. Impressive refurbished building which is absolutely huge! All staff we had contact with were very friendly and welcoming. Plenty of parking was available at the rear in the car park.
W. H.
Great food and drinks and fab prices, great service. Really like this new Spoobs, the toilets (important) were lovely, in fact the best Spoons toilets I've been to (and I've been to alot!) Defo recommend.
A. A.
We really enjoyed our visit at The Golden Beam. Drinks and service were on point as most of Wetherspoons but food was significantly better. I went for fish and chips and it was as good as it gets.
L. G.
First visit. Great atmosphere. Lots of little nooks and crannies. Didn't quite know why there was a chaise long in the toilet though!!!
P. P.
Usual Wetherspoons fare. Massive building so plenty of room to spread out. Very efficient service at the time we were there - about 5.30 pm.
K. C.
This wetherspoons is about the best one I've been in. A plus is it was straight over the road from hotel. Friendly staff nice meal couldn't ask for more really.
R. m.
Visiting my son took me here, Great prices. And lovely food. Place is very big. So if going with a lot of you. No problem
C. L.
The food was nice as always but on this paticular day there was an hour wait for food other than that no complaints and would recommend it
M. A.
Nice big pub..not too busy for a Saturday afternoon... Nice cool pint.. What more to say... Try it..
E. C.
Was a good place to sit in. Was pretty nice drinks but the chicken burger was dreadful tbh.
A. B.
Superb addition to the JD Wetherspoon new outlets. Fantastic renovation on an old building. Excellent food offerings. Cheap local real ale
R. W.
Brand new so looks very clean! Very impressive building, felt like I was invited somewhere special! Staff I talked to were very polite and friendly and the building is worth seeing just for itself. Felt like the old days when spoons had high standards! ..or am I getting old? !!
D. W.
First time visit to a Wetherspoons yesterday. Had cappuccino in very pleasant surroundings.
C. H.
Beautifully designed and structural features indoors and out and very polite staff. A grand open indoors atmosphere whilst privacy at every table is still achieved, the menus had an exam style design to them which just adds to the surroundings of where it is based within the heart of Leeds and it's Universities. Only fault I could find was been asked if everything was ok during our meal like how am I supposed to answer with a mouth full of food other than cover my mouth with my hand to answer as it's rather contradictory of both staff and customers even though neither are been rude. other than that 10/10 would most definitely recommend and shall definitely be returning. As for the night life I've yet to review as not all weather spoons play music so would be a silent boogie 💃💃
N. D.
Not a fan of big chains but you've got to give Wetherspoons credit for an excellent resoration job. Very impressive interior. Interestingly, they weren't allowing crowds of students in fancy dress in so fairly quiet on a Saturday night.
S. B.
I can't believe that I'm reviewing a spoons but it's happening. This Spoons is probably the best I've ever been to. Quality of the food is above and beyond any I've ever ate at and the cleanliness/service/general atmosphere is just great. I don't want to overstate it and sound like I'm the manager on his fake account or something - it's nothing like that, it's just a friggin good spoons.
Toilets are good too. Well played.
C. P.
Nice place but once again l have asked fir my steak to be well done and had to have it returned, last time was in Kendal that had 3 goes to get it right . By the time l got it the baked potato was just warm .l have given up on Weatherspoons now lt doesn't taste right after being warmed up 2 or 3 times .Not wasting my money 💰 Staff are nice though.
K. O.
Quick service, good food, clean toilets, but we did visit mid afternoon ... Will definitely be going back!!!
J.
A great new addition to the Headingley pub scene. Weatherspoons always do a good job of renovating the buildings they open their pubs and this is no exception. Large open bar with great high glass ceiling and panoramic window. And the food was good as well
A. H.
Fabulous place they've done a fantastic job on the refurbishment of this building its just what headingley needed, Great selection of drinks ,very pleasant staff and the place was spotless ,keep up the good work 👍 🤣
C. S.
Tanisha was brilliant and responsible in who she refuses service. Ignore him having a tantrum xx
S. W.
Typically Whetherspoon! Dunno, think I was expecting something aesthetically different.
I found service fast and efficient after ordering through the app. The place is facing the same issues as other bars, in terms of being short staffed, so was impressed with the service and courage under fire of the staff.
There are a few parking spaces in back, with on street parking. This is not ideal for disabled entry as the door from the car park is closed as well as the side door. To gain entry there is an albeit short walk, but up a hill.
Whilst I'm not a regular to Whetherspoons, I would go back.
J. R.
I used to walk past this place when it was abandoned, and I am thrilled beyond belief to see it repurposed into a space where people can eat food and drink cheap alcoholic beverages.
The inside has been tastefully decorated, and there is ample room inside. The outside area is a bit small, but that isn't too much of a problem.
I have visited a few times, and I am impressed by the quality of the garlic bread (my "friends" and I call them Garlbs because we are generally fun and kooky people)
It would have got 5 stars, but on the last visit, they had lost our order, meaning we were waiting over 40 minutes for the drinks. We don't know if this was the fault of the app, but the bar staff were quick to sort it out for us.
V. D.
Love the venue but always run out of menu items. Every single time we go, at random times. Can't they suss out their needs yet.
o. m.
Great location. Good service. Will be returning
A. A.
Prices are good, location and atmosphere are decent but food took too long to arrive I waited almost 45 minutes for a burger and fries. The drinks were quick to arrive however. I had a good experience overall but hope that next time it is better.
B. A.
Really friendly and polite staff., Nice to finally see the building been brought back to life.
j. n.
The best Wetherspoons in Leeds. Plenty of seating, lovely interior nice to see that original features have been kept. Friendly staff food was lovely very nice.
S. W.
Nice and spacious but not much character. Some of the staff seemed to have a bit of an attitude too
J. B.
Stunning building, once again the Wetherspoons design team do a fab job of holding historic value, whilst functioning as a great pub. Despite the lovely state of the building, our breakfast visit was rather disappointing. We weren't expecting a great atmosphere, so our visit wasn't spoiled by that. It was the quality of the food. Bacon was very dry and tasted awful and the mushrooms were missing from my meal. In addition to this, the toast and beans was way too cold and the whole plate seemed like it was waiting around for someone to order. I would visit again to experience the nightlife of this venue and hopefully the place will improve current perceptions of the place.
J. S.
Well refurbished venue, sensibly priced, can always get a table.
D. M.
Staff friendly. Quick service.
j. h.
Cant be beaten on price, especially on our southern prices. Few still frozen chips and raw gammon steak on my mixed grill, but... when your paying 11 quid for a hot meal and a pint, you dont really care. Filled a hole, job done
D. H. (. t. B.
Tanisha is a great team leader, who is responsible in who she decides to cut off, especially when dealing with scummy influencers
R. M.
Lovely decor nicely laid out very quick service food as always nice and tasty
G. R.
Rather worrying that this beautifully renovated building was let down by poor managment. Ordered meal after meal that were out of stock, even the house red was unavailable. Disabled parking yet a long trek to the front door. The saving grace was the lovely staff, every one I encountered was helpful and good humoured. Will return when I hear the glitches have been sorted.
D. L.
Nice big building. Don't forget to check car reg in end of bat
h.
The staff working tonight have been amazing, Tonisha has been great!
S. S.
Worth a visit just to see inside this wonderful building that has been faithfully restored
D. R.
Very nice and comfortable. Excellent service.
Well worth a visit.
M. T. P.
Upon arrival we sat in a lovely quaint area down by the glass doors. However, little did we know we would be sat here for over 45 minutes before digging into a proper traditional breakfast (scran). We waited and waited... And waited and then when the food came a friggin egg was missing! I mean what the heck guys? Anyway, so I went up and asked about the missing egg and she told me there none left! No compensation was offered and I was left feeling like a fool. Food was nice though and the staff were nice. Also a beautiful building and a beautiful date ;).
J. L.
This is one big bar that takes a lot of filling! Saturday evening, no students in town so it was quiet to say the least. Will try again when things get back to normal but nevertheless, its a lovely old building of purpose thats had a lot of money spent on it so hopefully it will become a success.
S. B.
Magnificent conversion of the former girls school light airy plenty of interesting features not sure on the beer garden but seemed potential on two levels was busy on my visit Saturday afternoon will be extremely popular with cricket and rugby fans and you can see Headingley floodlights from across the road. Good service nice ambience slight grumble no Wetherspoon price cards on the table so have to enquire at bar a little more expensive but given its brand new and the vast amount invested to be expected.still compared with other bars top notch value.
L. W.
The staff was fantastic had a great afternoon will come again one day 😀
F. T.
Excellent venue, fairly prices and the staff are very friendly and helpful. Definitely more 'family' oriented than other parts of Headingley which is obviously very much geared towards students etc (although we were here after the end of term so cannot say if its a student place during term time).
L. S.
Very abruptly meeted with one member of door staff. Drinks very well priced and staff working very hard to service and please. Me and my partner order food, food was very vary dry, bland and disappointing. Eaten at other spoons be4, and this was well below par.
A. S.
Great beer, amazing historic building and real vfm
D. F.
Very good. Shame there's only one disable parking space, and it's very small.
C. P.
Good spoons. Lovely Staff. Massive building.
C. S.
Sympathetically restored former school building which has been renovated to a high standard. We have visited on several occasions now and it has been great each time, I highly recommend the halloumi fries as they're amazing!!
j. y. r.
Visited for the first time, the best wetgerspoon I have been 😍
C. M.
Really nice decor. Facsimile Wetherspoons. I am sure it will improve once covid restrictions have ended, but twenty five minute wait for drinks via app on a Thursday is excessive. I had finished food, which came after ten minutes, before real ale turned up. Staff seemed overwhelmed.
C. L.
Let's start by saying how amazing this place looks - it's huge and so bright. However, teething issues or not, they were unprepared for day 1. Nobody was ready for the WiFi not working to use the app, orders were messed up, wait time for a pint was ridiculously long. The system they adopted didn't work, the staff were undertrained. They really needed experienced staff to guide the others, but obviously decided against this. Can this 3 star review jump to 5 stars? Definitely.
K. H.
Just popped in here for the first time on a Sunday morning. Typical Wetherspoons and the refurbishment looks excellent. Not too busy when I went in and just had a couple of coffees.
m. j.
Wow have done an amazing job on this old school plenty of space 🍻🍻🍻
C. J.
Lovely friendly staff. Good service. Shame it closed at 10.30 lol. Seems to be limited food menu, suspect due to covid. What we had was nice, though the pizza was a tad on the "well done" side. Will go again
A. S.
Fairly quiet when we visited. However they managed to forget one of our meals. It came pretty quickly once informed so no problem.
M. J. A.
Amazing place to have food. It looks so cool and the booths upstairs bring good vibes, you can never go wrong with the price/quality of the weatherspoons
G. F.
Decent service. Had the mixed grill: chicken and gammon overcooked and dry. Would have sent them back but someone else was paying so I didn't want to complain.
A. P.
A very smart weatherspoons beautifully decorated a joy to be in..
S. G.
Huge pub. Good value food and drink. Tables cleared/cleaned infrequently. Uphill walk all the way from the station; a doddle getting back, though!
a. k.
Nicely decorated and spacious. Selection of cask beer very poor so for me it's a nono but my daughter and boyfriend enjoyed the bottled beer.
P. G.
Most luxurious place to drinks only down side is it closed at 12.
A. “. C. F.
Like most Spoons, does what it says on the tin.. The reason for 4*'s professional staff.
A. ..
Cash only, can’t order on app or use card at the till as their systems seem to be failing all the time. Food and drink was good though. Free parking too.
G. B.
Well kept pub. Beer ordered on app and came quickly. Little atmosphere but it was early. Outside tables were good..
A. G.
Breakfasts were amazing on Sunday as was the service!!
S. B.
Magnificent building cheap pint cheap food just what you need on a Jan morning
E. A.
I can't fault the renovation that's been done, it's a wonderful building and the old features show through. Classic wetherspoons food and drink, service was quick and the atmosphere lively.
L. W.
Food was usual wetherspoons fayre.fast to the table but no frills.
J. C.
Great wetherspoons! Small car park to the rear so worth the chance!
G. F.
Just had a quick drink. They have done the building out well. Some outside seating and surprisingly quiet considering its proximity to the main road.
P. B.
Great pub - value for money and service!
S. J.
Wasn't expecting so much space. Plenty of room, friendly staff and good quality/price
S. Y.
It was alright. But the toilets are all the way up the stairs.
M. M.
One of the nicest Wetherspoons I've visited.
L. J.
Magnificent locale, not reflected in the price.
J. M.
A lunchtime visit. Food delicious, service good...a technophobe, so personal service was welcome and friendly! I'm not looking forward to the cessation of table service and the queues at the bar!!
A. Y.
Great for food and drinks! For all price ranges
r. b.
Great vegan choices, would love to see more variety of vegan breakfast options, and a tofish & chips would be ace
L. J.
Not the best service they couldn't cope with the cricket fans, food took forever then they forgot bits , they just didn't fill up the coffee machine so no coffee normally im a fan of Wetherspoons but not on that day.
A. B.
Quite spacious and clean. Food was to the expected standard. It was nice and empty. Staff was very friendly
Wheelchair access available.
M. D. H.
Great looking Wetherspoon in Headingley. Long overdue. No fancy dress idiots which is a bonus anywhere.
D. F.
Great venue but if you would like a meal they shut earlier that all other witherspoon, s pub
So the best you can get is a packet of crisps
M. Z.
Wonderful building & a good meal reasonably priced
P. F.
Slightly disappointed at being asked to pay before any beer was poured, it was like I was not trusted. Otherwise a good night was had with beer at a very competitive price.
L. R.
Great place and bouncers were really good they couldn't let in fancy dress but made it helpful for us to sort want we could do to come in
M. L.
Wow lovely building with impressive features. Breakfast was mint especially the breakfast muffin and a brew with unlimited refill BARGAIN 99P.
D. T.
Loved it... Wanted to read every wall decoration, meal was Wetherspoon's... You know what your gettin' plenty and reasonable...
V. L.
Lots of space and social distancing is easy but almost everything was sold out so clearly stock is an issue
C. M.
Nice looking pub. Very busy so took a while to get food and drinks. Buy staff were all friendly.
N. M.
Most of the negative comments are from those that don't accept teething issues from such a new massive place. It's a fantastic addition to Headingley, one that through out the coming decades will have a positive impact on the masses.
S. H.
They've made a cracking job on a building that was just left to ruin. Lovely inside must have cost a fortune. Staff friendly and everything you would expect from Wetherspoons.
J. M.
Lovely old building which has been beautifully restored. Food was very nice, and staff were very helpful with navigating the app to order
N. H.
Wetherspoons have done an excellent job in bringing this building back to life .I live locally and am very happy to see how popular it has quickly become which is down to the well trained and helpful staff and a very easy to use app , a good selection of drinks including real ales are available and as a pensioner very reasonable prices.
P. F.
Food good as all WPs. But they had big French windows wide open, which at 7pm on a wet night made it a bit cool for comfort.
L. M.
Good food,good beer,good staff,very affordable.
D. D. D. D.
Good staff& service ,with an interesting layout within
J. W.
Beautiful building. Great, attentive staff. Had breakfast- good value and good range.
J. G.
They've done a great job converting this place, when a new place opens there'll always be some teething problems but over all friendly table service, and the food was quick and vfm as always.
D. M.
Great grub, good service, friendly welcome. Fabulous building too, very covid safe. Thank you Yorkshire!!
K. E.
Great place food good too
J. B.
Good table service. Good prices
J. P.
Great atmosphere and food was lovely.
L. C.
So lovely fast with food taste lovely go you won't be, disappoin
J. R.
Fantastic building with huge amount of seating. Food and coffee is Wetherspoons, so you know what to expect.

Very modern inside with feature bar. Was quite busy but even so people dissappear within it as it is so large.

Stunningly beautiful with a fantastic history. A great investment by Wetherspoons. Very helpful and friendly service.

Once again a wonderful airy pub to while away .

Mediocre, Wetherspoons staff DO NOT really care about their customers, it's like a fast food service environment a posh McDonald's. Not a locals local.... 👎🏽
H. S.
App ordering is rubbish, there was no cod and chips or vinegar. Had to drink out drinks and then leave. 🙁
G. H.
