Reviews of The Grove Inn
E. A.
Fun little pub with an absolutely fantastic folk night on a Tuesday. They do a good range of real ales and lagers, as well as boasting a decent spirits selection. The location is a bit out of the way, but well worth a trip over.
n.
Small pub near the city centre, with a back street boozer atmosphere. Nice selection of real ales alongside Gunness and the more generic lagers. Pies and pasties are available, not sure about any other food options. Very warm welcome from the folks behind the bar, the other customers were friendly and chatty. I don't get to visit Leeds very often, however when I'm there again, I'll be heading for the Grove. Recommended for real pub fans.
S. M.
Friendly bar staff and great choice of beers. Amazing slice of history, a real old style Leeds boozer. Live music in separate large room some evenings.....we loved it and will return.
C. G.
A fantastic piece of history sitting proudly in a modern urban world. Excellent beer and live music, what more do you need?
J. H.
A very nice cosy pub and great for a pint or two.
R. W.
Always a great pint and good atmosphere. Great service with a smile.. 😁 Sat outside on a sunny afternoon. Pint and a pork pie.. cant go wrong 😁
B.
This place is worth a visit just to see, I have to say I was speechless at the classic styling of this pub, it's by far the best example I've ever seen of a traditional British pub.
If it doesn't have a Preservation order on it, it really should!
R. C.
Lovely pub. Nice atmosphere and good beer. What more can you ask?
D. R.
A proper old school pub. Loads of hand pulled ales. Pie and peas for less than a fiver. Brilliant
S. S.
Nice pub with several small bars. Have live music on some nights. Plenty choice of beer.
C. H.
Classic Leeds pub with traditional interior, great range of high quality beers and friendly service.
D. T.
A charming old pub with some well kept real ales on. Would go in again next time I'm in Leeds.
r. n.
Great cosy pub with lots of real ale and plenty going on , all in the city centre, whats not to love !!! 😀
J. H.
One of my fav pubs in Leeds, tucked away true to itself among the high rise buildings. Great selection of ale and beers, most importantly a dart board! Hard to find these days. Great food too, and host regular live music. A must visit before your train ride home.
R. G.
This is a lovely old traditional pub that has kept its magic in the middle of an area of Leeds which has changed dramatically over the years. There is a friendly atmosphere, great staff, great beers and great food. There are several snug rooms to sit in with lots of original features and seating around the bar. In the concert room, the venue has a folk night on a Fri, open mic nights on Tues and Weds. Thurs night, Sat night and Sun afternoon feature some of the best bands playing in an intimate setting. It's lovely that the Grove is still here and we should all support it to make sure it stays that way. If you haven't visited, do. It's also only a short walk from the train station.
A. T.
Excellent traditional pub. Good choice of real ales and great service. 👍
A. W.
My new favourite pub. Outstanding beer selection, great food. Friendly and knowledgeable bar staff
R. R.
Went in to see if had changed at all.. really glad to see all of the old features in there... if you have not been and enjoy great drinks it's a must... it's not been remodelled and its history ripped out it.. probably the best example of what a pub should be like.
N. C.
I have been coming here on and off for thirty plus years and like how it has survived despite what has been built around it.
My first experience was John Smith's Magnet ale and Ruddles county.
The beer choice over the years has more than doubled with some more interesting beers available.
It is great to see the toilets have been refurbished but there's one downside and that the front room is too dark and I struggled to read the beer badges.
Maybe changing the colour of the ceiling to a lighter colour and a more powerful light would sort out the problem. Other than that, great.
J. A.
Lovely boozer, the person who said the front room is too dark is missing the point. If you can't see the pumps ask the person what's on. There's a blackboard with them all on as well.
My minor criticisms are: there should be cushions in the snug as the original seating is extremely uncomfortable (defeating the object of a snug) and the pub can be under-heated (which again defeats the object of a cosy ale house). The lager choices are drab too.
Other than that, there's a lot to admire. Characterful layout, concert room in the back, increased outdoor area, very well kept ales to the point where I have hardly ever had a bad pint there. Nice mix of people from rockers to office staff nearby. Off the beaten path enough to avoid the corporatising that has happened to other pubs closer to the centre. The tiny kitchen puts out some cracking food too at times. Been going since 2013 on and off.
M. H.
A proper pub standing its ground in the city centre
G. B.
Best pub in Leeds! Great beer, great food, lovely friendly atmosphere and some great live music. This pub is an absolute gem. All the staff are very friendly and welcoming and I cannot praise this fantastic pub enough!
B. B.
A Leeds legend. Helpful staff and great ale choices. A must visit if you're in Leeds
F. R.
Fantastic pub, up there with the best I've been to.
A. R.
Good selection of real ales and friendly staff.
M. F.
Exclusive pub just outside of the city centre. Dog friendly.
T. W.
Great memories of this place from my time in Leeds in the 1970s. It is such a gem, unspoilt and a beating part of Leeds' heart.
J. H.
Amazing atmosphere lovely old fashioned pub friendly staff
s. b.
My first visit to The Grove in 30 years. Had forgotten what a cracking boozer it is.
J. T.
New landlord is ace, lovely pint of Guinness
P. M.
Good choice of beer and great venue for live music. Seems to be an original pub with all new skyscrapers built around.
K. S.
Great pint of Mary Jane in cozy surroundings 🙂
J. H.
What lovely place.. !!! Myself and my partner popped in for a drink, the staff and the manager Dave couldn't do anough for us, nothing was to much for them and we was made to feel at home.
WILL DEFINITELY BE VISITING AGAIN 😊
C. P.
Think of the old guys house in "Up" made into a live music pub of infinite charm and untouched unspoiled character. Surrounded by Leeds Legoland tge beer I'd good, staff friendly and the bands superb.
I. B.
Nice peps, and brilliant music too, very friendly bar staff.
r. s.
Lovely atmosphere, good beer, amazing open fire. We will be back
M.
Old style traditional pub, good beer
B. H.
Good atmosphere nice layout and good beer
F. B.
Good place to stop off for a pint after walking back from church.MOT
k. b.
A great old fashioned pub
M. P.
A wonderful example of Victorian pub with a good selection of ales with the addition of live music.
B. O.
Great pub and music on Sunday afternoon
A. M.
Since 1962, the Grove has been host on Friday evenings to the folk club. It is one of those clubs you kind of think you know of. I can tell you, you need to come and give it a try.
The pub itself is a historical landmark, and the beer is superb. Prices are excellent, which surprised me. The atmosphere was friendly and inclusive, it got even better in the club room.
If you like beer, give this place a try.
If you like Folk music, come here on Friday night.
If you like Beer and Folk Music, you probably already know about the Grove.
C. D.
Great band on Saturday night 9pm till 11pm in the cosy concert room. Good atmosphere, however bar staff were grumpy, slow, unwelcoming. The cask beer was in good condition but the range was limited to pale ales apart from one fruit beer.
Needs better bar staff, we will be back and hope to see them replaced or retrained.
T. T.
A lovely pub that we stumbled across by accident. A very pleasant surprise.
S. O.
Good beer and even better company
R. W.
One of, if not the best pub in Leeds. I've been going here for 20 years. The previous landlady was a personal friend of my father's and since its changed hands the new boss Dave has kept the old vibes going with the beers fresh, the guest ales, rotated the music varied and rocking for all tastes and the craic mighty. Keep up the good work. I'll be in for a Guinness next time I'm over.
L. M.
You just don't get pubs like this any more, and this place is so much more real and friendly than your craft bars and gastropubs of late. There's atmosphere here, interesting people, friendly locals and a good selection of beers. I hope this place survives, I'd miss it if it went.
P. H.
Traditional style pub with a good selection of ales, friendly staff, food (including a curry night). Live music some nights, if that's your thing. Otherwise good place to chat, if that's more you speed. There are stained glass divider windows inside. A proper local that avoided the open plan development drive of the 80s and 90s. Check it out before they are all gone.
N. B.
Good place, perfect to heat yourself abd drink a good ale
A. S.
A brilliant night of music from talented local musicians and song writers...
S. A.
Best pub in Leeds. One of the only real ones left in the city..Great beer, great music and great hosts. You're sure to get a decent pint and the staff will make sure you're looked after. Also has a fantastic little gig room with some of the best artists in the country playing in an intimate setting - completely unique experience and worth seeking out and making the short walk out of the city centre to visit. Only a fivw minute walk from the station!
Somewhere you can still get a decent well priced drink and sit down and have a good chat amongst like-minded decent folk. 10/10.
R. C.
Fantastic old pub very near Leeds City Centre. Completely unspoilt. Live music almost every night. Decent beers from many different breweries. Deserves all the praise it gets.
G. B.
What a fantastic pub. Plenty of different beers, great staff and a fantastic atmosphere. Try to get there every time we go over to Leeds and never been disappointed yet. Probably the best pub music venue in Leeds
J. K.
Stunning historic pub that's just a bit too close to town to be a local and a bit too far to be a city pub. Great music, superb staff, plentiful beer and history*.
*First place in the world with a flushing toilet**, longest uninterrupted folk club in a single venue and oldest place in Leeds where there has always been a pub. Not to mention the plethora of famous faces that have graced/been regulars.
**according to a Adam Hart-davis documentary.
D. M.
A hidden gem, traditional pub just south of Leeds station. Good range of well kept beers. Pie and peas available the last time I was in. We left just before a folk club started
D. W.
Visited today with two young people from the short breaks service where I work. Was made so welcome by Dave and the staff team. The customers were a great crowd too and the chips were yummy Dave! One of our young people met the band members which topped it all of perfectly.. Thank you to everyone for a memorable afternoon.
C. H.
Great Beer, Great atmosphere and a dartboard!
Me and my friends usually visit on a midweek evening which provides a steady steam of customers and a vacant dartboard.
A few jolly pints whilst we compete on our own league makes for a good night. A visit for the beer alone is well worth it. Pub serves food throughout the day and a glance at the menu shows simple honest pub grub at decent prices. Pork pies available all day from local supplier and are very tasty.
Only problem I seem to notice is during the winter months when the stove is lit on the bar area there is always an expert customer who can never seem to leave the fire alone!
A must visit for every real ale fan or those on the lookout for a traditional boozer in a city centre culture.
J. G.
Came here before going to the Leeds v Everton game, loved the atmosphere and great selection of beers
C. L.
Excellent range of beers. Music on tap. Dave the manager has been a long term supporter of music in Leeds and he really keeps it alive down at the Grove Inn. It's a wonderful balance and well met 🙂
B.
Extensive variety of well-kept beers, AND pork pies on the bar? Check. Lovely little folk night on a Friday and a great variety of live acts? Check! Random funky location at the back of the train station? Well, sometimes it's good to get away from the likes of North Bar and co! Worth searching out
C. P.
One of the best traditional pubs remaining in Leeds. They have a snug! Live music nights. Great range of beers. Simple but good value food.
R. S.
Love this old well worn, authentic, none poncy pub. Wilson's pork pies on the bar!! Brown sauce on request! Live music & wonderful beer. Great, friendly atmosphere.
S. B.
At the moment you step in this restaurant the personel give you a good feeling. Very warm waiters, it is a happy place to to go out with friends and colleagues or with your date. delightful food, professional chef, good cost and professional service. Highly recommended.
N. D.
Historic Leeds pub saved from the money men and their bulldozers by a diligent regular. Overseen by Simon of Blues Bar and Duck and Drake fame and ably managed by the charismatic Dave. Regular live music including an open mic night and a folk club. Well worth a visit.
R. M.
We teavel from Hebden Bridge and Todmorden to watch the bands play .
Lively music pub fills ip pretty quock on Sunday afternoons..Landlord Dave always extends very warm welcome ad do the bar staff. Real ale is good and nice variety .
They also do pub food but so far not sampled
T. H.
A charming little pub with separate drinking rooms, the staff were really friendly and informative about the selection of ales they had on offer. They also have a good food selection as well as an outdoor terrace which is ideal for sitting outside on warm days.
R. Y.
If live music in a great atmosphere along with good beer is your thing then you won't find a better place in Leeds. Proper old style pub too, not so many of them left anymore.
R. B.
Lovely traditional pub with great beer and friendly staff. A friend and I had some great company in there last night. Thanks Jade for the top quality service and banter too.
J. H.
This was a pub that frequented 20 years ago when all around it was derelict. There was attempts to close it and sell the land but they held out. Now ask these year later I'm working back in Leeds and this pub is still full of character. The only difference being it surrounded by new modern buildings meaning it's character is all the more enhanced.
R. J.
A gem of a survival from a lost era.
This pub is reminiscent of how they used to be when I was too young to go in them - and I've just retired! Not one huge carpeted bar here, nor music played at 120 decibels, but lots of small, intimate rooms that you can sit in with your friends and talk without having to bellow.
Always a great range of real ales available on handpump at very reasonable prices.
Entering it these days feels slightly surreal, entering a traditional pub that is towered over by the behemoth that is Bridgewater Place (aka The Dalek) but once you are inside you are transported back half a century or more.
P. A.
A very good pub, old fashioned in all the right ways. A very good selection of well kept beers. Highly recommended for fans of real ale and has been a folk club for many years.
C. B.
Good pub for music. However, I live in York and it's a b****r to find on the one way system in the dark. This is NO fault of The Grove - but when will Leeds City Centre ever be open again, especially the Leeds Drain?
Good beer and atmosphere, I would probably go more than once a month if I lived nearer.
😊
S. P.
Proper pub with a great atmosphere. Food is great and very well priced, proper home comforts. This place will become your new local. Look out for the live music too.
D. O.
Top music venue, it's a rough and ready pub with plenty of colour which adds to its charm.
J. R.
Good traditional no frills real ale pub with rotating, usually fairly local, ales & always a real cider. Currently have well regulated Covid restrictions
B. R.
A quick first visit last night (10/06/2018). Very impressed. Beer as good as it gets, staff friendly, lovely interior. How this gem survived when all around has been redeveloped, God knows, but I am so glad that it did. Will be back.
S. B.
Great entertainment in an atmospheric pub
F. T.
Lovely old pub work great staff
S. J.
Not a bad pub nice real ale but nobody can afford it . This pub is like many others in this area it's in holbeck and people from here can't pay 4.10 a pint for standard beer . Could be they don't want ordinary working class folks in here hence the way over the top price structure.
M. D.
Staff really good. No issues with away fans. Couple of nice ales on pump. Recommended
J. L.
Just a 5 minute walk from Leeds train station. This is what pubs used to be like. Small rooms. Small bar with a selection of beers on draught. It is a bit dated but enjoy it while its there.
D. M.
Top local boozer, don't ask for posh just expect very nice beers. Been several times and expect to return several times more.
M. J.
Great venue for live music with a good "old times" feel to it.
T. L.
One of the best pubs in Leeds. Great selection of beer's, food and the staff are great. Lots of gigs and other things on regularly.
S. M.
This pub is a lovely place to drink play and chill out to music
S. C.
The Grove. It's a real time warp kind of pub. If you enjoy loud music streamed through Spotify, shouting to make yourself heard, hipster surroundings and a trendy crowd, best avoid The Grove. However if you enjoy a pub that feels as if it hasn't changed since the Great War, and appreciate good beer and great live music in intimate surroundings, look no further.
S. P.
Lovely pub-pub with a range of well-kept beers, mostly from Yorkshire breweries. Three beers from Stancill when I was there. Dart board is designed for regular use, with an unobstructed oche (rare in these parts).
J. D.
Great traditional pub and a Leeds institution. Fantastic real ale and regular live music, focusing on folk and local performers in it's cosy back room.
D. W.
A hidden gem. A little pub serving traditional ales. It was like stepping back in time coming in here and I loved it. I believe they have live music on most nights, but I didn't get to see this unfortunately.
S. F.
Hidden gem, traditional pub in a modern era & vibe.
M. J.
Excellent gig venue with a good range of guest beers.
L.
What more can a Yorkshire lass want on a Friday night.Wilson's pie and peas and pint of cider with her mates.Truly Fantastic atmosphere, nice, cosy, clean and friendly pub in the heart of the city of Leeds.
M. A.
This place is one of the hidden treasures of Leeds. It's a proper old school pub which serves fantastic ales, wonderful staff and has superb live music. Get yourself down here
D. A.
A wonderful pub that does not bow to current trends nor is it stuck in the past to its own detriment. Warm and welcoming and good beer! What more could you want?
R. H.
Fantastic local just 5mins walk in to the town centre. Excellent choice of quality real ales. Older type of pub with many small cosy rooms. Love it.
M. D.
Good traditional pub. Several rooms and whilst there a jam was starting be a number of folk musicians. Frequented by office folk Mon to Fri, and Leeds United fans on game days
A. P.
Why do I need to say?

Have been going here on and off for years. Went this week and have to say it's still great. Prices are up food wise, but the pub is still a down to earth traditional English pub. A hidden gem.
K. S.

T. W.
Great pub! Pie and peas, loads of hand pull beers and reasonable prices.
S. T.
Quiet, nicely laid out pub. The sort of pub you don't see much in the city.
50p on debit card transactions which cost them a penny though. This has to stop.
d. k.
Homemade pub grub, 8 real ales, classic traditional pub with live music most nights and a wonderful bar team. Exactly what I want from a proper pub.
S. H.
Really like this little backwater. Has survived in its shabby form whilst all the glass high risers have been around it. Live music and great beer.
T. T.
Good selection of beers. Great for a Saturday lunchtime 'session'. Will be back ne31st week
M. W.
Great choice of beer in a traditional venue with real character. I still can't imagine how it must have felt to the owners to remain here while the 'new' city literally built up around it.
