Reviews of The Original Oak
E. A.
Nice big beer garden, decent selection of drinks. Gets pretty busy, so can take a while to get served. Big screens for sport, and generally a nice atmosphere. Worth going just to see the various Motley Otley runners!
J. H.
A lovely old pub with a good atmosphere. Some of the bar staff are absolutely amazing. A massive shout out to Joe who always looks after us all. Also, for the new barmaid Holly who always makes an effort and has a smile on her face. Thank you guys
R. R. (.
Fantastic lunch today. Lovely food, I had a fish wrap and chips, superb, helpful and friendly staff, great atmosphere, cosy pub, decent prices. Good ales. Great Pub not far from the stadium. Great selection of drinks and food !! You can even order from the comfort of your table without having to go to the bar ! Can get busy due to proximity to the cricket ground but has lots of space inside and outside with screens showing the latest sports games on !!
M. H.
Had a good beer with the family and this place has an epic beer garden for sporting events. It's also in Headingly which is just an awesome place in general. Would love to watch the TDF or TOB on the big screens.
S. T.
Great pub if you're a student! Prices are so much lower than its neighbour the Skyrack by a significant amount (due to the student deal they do) Totally recommend going here for cheap drinks 🍺🥃
W. D.
Nice sportsbar. The hamburger with cheese and bacon is highly recommendable as well as the rumpsteak. A lot of different sorts of beers. Nice desserts. Be patient when itnis crowded.
M. F.
Great beer garden. Always a pleasure to spend some time there with a friend and a pint.
s. j.
Good food a very nice pint and friendly place for a few pints staff are fantastic
J. J.
Great pub. Amazing ambience, food and friendly staff. Definitely recommend.
Went here for the Otley Run. Definitely recommend and will go again.
B. W. (.
Can't go wrong with this pub. It has probably the biggest beer garden in Leeds so it's always a great place when the weather is good. The indoor area is nice too and it had a very large selection of drinks. The food looks pretty steady, I've only even eaten here twice and it was a while ago so can't comment on the food too much but I do remember it being pretty decent.
J. J.
A labyrinth of a pub with 4 bars adds character to an area where bars and pubs are plentiful. Like the pub across the road it offers space, pints and sports. If anything the layout feels less appropriate to find good viewing but I do lick pubs that have corners to hide in. That said, little is done with the character and this is little more than a cosy drinking establishment.
D. M.
Always visit on our way to headingley stadium, never fails to deliver, excellent beer garden
E. O.
Nice beer garden with a big screen to watch any sport
L. H.
Staying in Leeds on a short break and came across this fantastic pub. Lovely staff who were all extremely helpful. Outside space is fantastic with socially distance tables and even a large TV screen. Food was excellent and reasonably price. Will definitely go back again 😊. Thank you
T. K.
I will die for fish and chips Truely british experience.bakery nice too. Do visit this place if you r in leeds
D. C.
Fantastic place. The food is amazing and the outside seating is brilliant with a great big screen for sporting events.
A. S.
A bit of a student haunt on a Saturday sunny afternoon in the large beer garden, with live sports on a big screen.
P. P.
It is a good place to hangout...good drink and food and nice environment. It has great location, very close to Headingley stadium and some minutes from the university.
E. S.
Great beer garden, great inside seating. Relaxed atmosphere. Can get very very busy at times
p. p.
Best place in Leeds to watch sport. Table service, nice blend of youth and more mature patrons. Nice staff. Quality food. I had pizza was delicious. Quite good prices.
P. B.
Great place, huge garden, long standing reputation.
J. S.
Great pub for sport. Visited on Sunday for Chelsea v Man U friendly atmosphere and efficient service. Nicely done
C. T.
Great beer garden, fantastic food and service.
C. W.
Had the best time here! Great beer, great food (veg options aplenty!), and even better service! Perry is the best servers anyone could ask for — she was an absolute highlight! Amazing beer garden with TVs in nicer weather. Could not recommend this great pub more!
D. S.
First time we had been, met up with our son to go to the cricket. It has an amazing atmosphere could have sat there all afternoon. Loved it ❤️
K. M.
lovely large beer garden great for a pint on a sunny day
i. j.
Had a really good Philly Steak Sandwich although the Crunchy Slaw was meagre and tired.
I. M.
Great pub food, my mate had a massive mixed grill and my veggie burger was really tasty. Loads of TV's to watch sport and plenty of space.
A. H.
Love this place its my new local very friendly staff ,great beer prices haven't tried the food yet but looks good and plenty of large screen TV's to watch sports 👍🍺🤣💯
A. N.
The food was lovely, but the beer alone was overpriced. If you took advantage of the food and drink offer, it became good value, but on its own it was a little pricey. Furthermore, the barmaid was miserable...she was more interested in chatting to her friends than helping the customers - we wanted a couple of menus and she told us she had one and we'd need to make do as she wasn't prepared to source another for us - I wouldn't have a problem doing so but she was a bit rude and it left a very sour taste. Felt like she didn't want to be there, and as someone who works in customer service, it's disappointing to see. The atmosphere in general was nice, the pub was very clean and friendly with sport on the TV and the food was excellent. I'd go back but if I saw the same member of staff on, I'd go to another part of the bar.
A. M.
Great pub with an awesome beer garden.
M. R.
The best outdoor sports pub in leeds
S. W.
Great beer garden showing sport. Very lively place. Thirty minute wait for drinks to be delivered to the table. Toilets were not pleasant.
A. B.
Great open space. I honestly don’t understand why you don’t play music. It is a completely different atmosphere with and without music, so I highly recommend playing it outside. Also the bouncer at the entrance was completely unprofessional - he was smoking and drinking like he was part of the party.
S. L.
Food was delicious, very nice and spacious beer garden. Only slight negative had to wait 30 minutes for our drinks, but overall was a positive experience
I. J.
Great environment plenty of space friendly staff and excellent food
K. S.
Lovely food and great atmosphere.
First visit, will go again
L. H.
Great pub for a catchup with friends. Haven't tried the new menu but looks like typical pub grub. Drinks selection is great, lots of bottles and choice on tap. The beer garden is a must for summer as it's huge and since the renovation has lots of different choice of seat to park your bum
R. C.
Went in today for a bar meal & some me time. Really enjoyable & staff were great. My Bangers & mash was lovely too! Thanks
O. I. (.
Fantastic place, I never knew there was such a massive back garden seating area with a huge TV in the corner! Great table service with their order on the phone app too
S. B.
Sat outside in massive beer garden. Beer decent, other half not keen on cocktails from the tap. Didnt venture inside, hence 3star review.
R. M.
This pub has improved quite a lot recently with a better choice of drinks, decent new menu and the decor is cleaner. Less 'student rough and ready' which is nice. Still gets rowdy in the back but the front bar is great to escape the crowds!
G. S. (.
Smaller but good selection of ales. Regular beers. Friendly staff although glass collection is a bit too keen for my liking. Toilets smell. Good large tables for larger groups. Could do with more regular cleaning as during peak time they get sticky. Very large outside area lots of seating for groups. Friendly doormen who put up large parasols when it rained. Didn't try food but they seem to have burger chip and possibly pizza. Would go again.
C. C.
Lovely traditional pub downstairs and a large upstairs with a huge beer garden including an outdoor screen for sporting events. Also, a good selection of drinks and food served by lovely staff. Definitely worth a visit.
D. S.
Came in after a night out visiting friends in the area, food and service was excellent while we enjoyed the football. After the tuna and cheese melt was knocked down I decided I would go for a rocky road sundae for desert. After about 40 mins of waiting I eventually got the bottle to say something to the staff, when I asked regarding my rocky road order it had been completely forgotten about which was a shame. After that time I had to go so they kindly refunded me the £4.50.
Maybe one day I will get to try the rocky road.
Overall great pub!!
O. S.
Been twice to this establishment now. Decent food for a fair price, friendly staff and quick service (except for my mate’s Rocky Road).
Had a delightful Ham & Cheese toastie with a soothing & equally delightful coffee (decent size mug too).
Sadly my mate never didn’t get to feast on the Rocky Road that he so desired. You could see heartbreak and disappointment scrawled all over this dishevelled man’s bearded face, when he returned from the bar having received his refund💷.
But Alas my review readers, a good time was had by all & I hope to be back there sometime soon.
C. C.
Best pub in the area. Great beer and food!!
D. B.
Bangin beer garden, great place to go after a big game or halfway through a sesh. As a starter pub not the best but you could always do worse
J. M.
Absolutely super, the meat feast pizza was fabulous. Should have taken pics. Will definitely go again. Staff were lovely and helpful
N. S.
Lovely pub good staff would go again
r.
Tastefully modernised, comfortable and spacious. Lots of big TVs around different areas of the pub. We were there at 11am and it was quiet so lots of choice where to sit. General menu and breakfast menu were available because it was quiet. Menu has what you would expect from a pub and it was good standard pub food. No espresso machine but filter coffee was OK. Staff friendly and helpful. Toilets up steep stairs, don't know where disabled toilet was.
A.
Very studenty pub with large outdoor area and a good menu. I would say this is on the cheap side rather than a mid-range. I was a bit sad that strongbow was the only cider they had on tap but overall its decent.
T.
Great venue, amazing huge beer garden and massive outdoor TV, perfect for sports and big events.
Service was prompt and prices resonable 👍
D. H.
Very welcoming pub in the middle of Headingley walking distance to the cricket and rugby grounds. Lots of students in term time but a good smattering of locals which gives it a local feel especially late afternoon early evening. Good range of Ales etc. Pop in why don't you
R. J.
Visited family in Headingly yesterday, we had lunch here. A warm & friendly welcome from staff, food excellent. Highly recommend this pub, lovely large beer garden too.
C. F.
This place gets busy and has a mix of ages. Thought it was far too expensive for what has always been a student area - pint of lager was over £3. Sky Rack quite a bit cheaper.
Pub shows sports and has a beer garden.
Usually a nice atmosphere. Issue i have is the price. I'd rather drink in Leeds if I'm going to pay £3-4 per pint
J. H.
I loved this pub, really friendly staff, great service, and England test match was on with there huge TV
G. W.
It's finished rather like most standard chain pubs but there is decent beer and a large outdoor seating area with a massive outdoor screen, which had the cricket on when we were there. Friendly staff, fair prices and good outdoor seating mean we'll likely go back when we're next in the area.
M. D.
A very nice and spacious place to spend time with friends or family alike. Good selection of food and drink and great fast, friendly service.
I. C.
I really like the pub. My only complaint is the expensive soft drinks. At £2.10 for a half pint as far as I remember, even though prices for soft drinks are crazy generally I thought this was just too much. It's a shame because if you want to sit when the pub is quieter you will be less inclined to visit.
R. G.
Really good bar for drinking a beer with friends. They have a wide variety of beers and also some food. You can see footbal or rugby inside almost every day. It used to be full of people in weekends with great atmosphere. Big terrace
V. C.
The Original Oak in Headingley is well worth a visit in my opinion. They have a sizable car park and a fantastic menu, the pub is laid out to suit different visitors, there are a couple of connected yet separate bar areas at the front and then at the back it has a larger open bar space which leads out into a very large outdoor space with outdoor barbecue facilities. Had breakfast there which was excellent, cooked just right. Staff were very friendly and helpful too.
T. F.
Okay pub with a decent pint
D. S.
Good pub. Can be ridiculously busy at times. Has a huuuge beer garden with a massive screen almost the same size as the one at millennium square. Also they have outdoor bbq's all the time in summer.
R. G.
my experience of the Oak has usually been upstairs or outdoors and a little bit drunk. So today when I met up with a couple of friends that were heading off upstairs for the Comedy night, we sat downstairs. In what I must presume is the original part of the pub. All oak panels and rooms within rooms. It was really lovely. Only two real ales on., but a Leeds pale and an IPA, so not bad. Dave and Julia got food, that wasn't my thing (pies and gammon) so much. but they seemed to think was pretty good. The oak has quite a lot going on (Quiz on Mondays, comedy on Thursdays other stuff that isn't on their website!), but I must admit that coming in here on a Thursday when no pub crawls coming through was quite refreshing, but also not as amusing as normal. I do like to see random characters walking through an establishment.
R. F.
Remarkable beer garden, big ol'screens, solid decor, plenty of space, and a large, but unsurprising, selection of drinks. Beers are rather pricey, so drink in moderation and you might have a few quid to put towards for an 'i am doner' afterward.
D. B.
Same as ever: colossal beer garden, decent range of beers, contactless machines along the bar to keep the waiting to a minimum. I may be getting too old for this place, so apologies to any of the young things who had to share the beer garden with us a couple of weeks ago!
J. R.
Its a very popular, busy, noise pub. Fab for going out with friends, not so great for a romantic quiet meal for two. Good for watching sport. On the otley run so do not expect a quiet drink in the garden on a Friday or Saturday night.
S. P.
I suppose many people do enjoy live sports, so if it's a sunny day go check out their awesome beer garden and watch whatever the football is doing. Nice little place made even nicer by the presence of security chaps who keep out the worst of the rowdy pub crawlers.
S. H.
A decent pub, particularly if you're looking to watch some sport outside in the summer. They have a large outdoor screen and show Sky and BT Sport matches. Drink selection is reasonable and food is decent, though the selection is a little uninspiring.
b. g.
Good pub, lots of indoor and outdoor seating! Went to see the fight ( Hayes Vs Tony), plenty of screens. If you don't mind the company of the many students who go there, it's a great pub, with decent drinks selection and has got parking.
J. A.
I got searched by a bouncer because someone was in the toilet taking unprescribed medicine through their nasal cavity, and I happened to be in the toilet at the time. The bouncer however was quite gentle but thorough so we all won in the end.
This place is great for decent beer and a huge beer garden.
G. R.
It's a great place with a huge beer garden where you can watch sports on a massive screen. They sometimes have BBQ'S on too. They have some interesting policy's when it comes to things you can't bring into the pub. Like certain cardboard fancy dress props and birthday cakes? Dispite this been on the otley run, a well known fancy dress drinking stretch of pubs.
A. R.
The best beer garden in Leeds, with space for well over 150 people and plenty of seats. Large interior with an ok selection of beers and ales, and a selection of average, low price pub food. Overall a good pub.
M. N.
Friendly boozer. Visited to watch football on Sky. Tv's in both bars - better for sitting watching footy in left (public) bar. Hand pumps appeared to be on public bar side only though bar between too so served both sides. Food looked good but didn't have any. Palace won 😁
W. H.
As a student, there's not much to complain about when it comes to the oak. Super cheap pints from 1.75 during happy hour (which is in fact 2 hours) you're laughing. The food is as good as you'd expect from a large pub; sort of spoons level ygm. The beer garden is bliss when the sun's out due to it's sheer size. Room for all the boiz! Either side of happy hour the prices are as you'd expect. Only down side is students. I know it's contradictory but I'm calm af. Not like those sports science students.
B. H.
Great indoor and outdoor spaces here and a truly fab Leeds legend of a pub. Lots of students but that's what you expect on headingley but there's quiet space for everyone as well as loud space for those who want it too!
F. Y.
Massive beer garden to enjoy in the sunshine. Staff are quite young and a bit slow at serving when busy. Food took over 2 hours last time, but we didn't mind waiting.
J. P.
Atmosphere is great, food tastes great, the service is great (always with a smile and quick to serve), only downside really was that the food takes a lil long to arrive. That said, the food does taste great, almost distracting me from how long it can sometimes take to arrive. Will definitely be returning!
T. M.
Best beer garden in the world. Good pints. Two sections that make it like two pubs in one. Keeps the otley runners away from quieter drinkers, all good. Great location.
M. D. H.
It's OK here, especially for sports but I don't know why on certain events they won't distribute the coverage a bit better. Having one screen only for the Wimbledon final when the CWC final was on is a bit extreme (although it was a very good final).
B. G.
A VAST beer garden! The biggest Beer Garden I have ever been in. Big TV screen too. I can understand why there is always a huge queue to get in!
M. P.
In Headingly this week with mrs. I love going to Headingly. The O Oak has the biggest and best garden and big screen i have ever seen to watch the football . We could not get a seat when we visited when the world cup was on as around 200 to 300 at least watching. Too cold this December to watch outside but they must of been expecting a few for Man City v Man Utd tonight, we sat inside and had some great chips an a pannini to eat, great stuff.
E. L.
A favorite place for the last game of any 6 nations. The venue when I watched Wilko kicking his drop goal in 2003 whilst I was at uni. Good selection of booze all round, service reasonably quick as always.
S. B.
Good pub, nice beer garden, and the House of Fun comedy nights are great. Europeans are only allowed in with a passport, though. Driving licenses and other ID cards are not accepted... How is that a thing??
A. A.
Great pub with very kind staff. They let us eat with kids after the “time to kick out the kids” time. Food and drinks were decent size proportions and tasty!
S. B.
Good pub in Headingley. Probably the best beer garden you'll ever see anywhere. Massive, and if the weather's good, bbq and live sports on a huge outdoor screen.
A. L.
Classic big pub, old wooden clad rooms, a new build at the side with a large beer garden, plenty of umbrellas for shade, big screen outside- and, of course, good beer..
G. R.
Came with the boys, had a couple of bevs, cannot complain, great service, lovely bevs, you can get £1.50 pints if you find one of those wristbands but God knows where they came from. Would recommend if you and the lads have a hankering for a fizzy and delicious pint.
J. P.
Great pub with a good atmosphere and great food!
B. B.
Perhaps I didn't get the premium experience of the Oak because I visited in the summer without the vast student crowd.
What I did experience was average service, without much smiling or dialogue. I don't expect a bar tender to be discussing politics with everyone, but a simple hello and goodbye might suffice.
I stopped by for some food with friends. Burger was good, but the bun was a little stale, which meant it disintegrated, leaving me to salvage a sloppy mess.
M. L.
A lot of work has been put in to looking after customers, rules are adhered to and the hard working staff couldn't be faulted. A credit to the Landlord
R. M.
I enjoy it, nice people, decent bouncers, bar staff seem great people also. Not really many problems. Great beer garden also
R. K.
Excellent experience, watched the Leeds United game on table service very good app to order your drinks. Would recommend.
S. C.
The pub has a great beer garden and very friendly staff.
M. O.
Biggest beer garden I've ever seen!! A huge TV to watch sports with awesome service 😎
J. P. M.
More than reasonable pub but the toilets were nasty. They had obviously been cleaned but two stalls for 200 people drinking beer in hot weather...
R. D.
Always been a favourite pub of mine since my university days. Nice food and massive beer garden for summer months.
W. G. (.
Fantastic size beer garden with projector and a good all round pub
V. A.
First time we were there we waited for about 20 min to get a drink, only to leave empty-handed as the bartenders kept ignoring us and taking other people's orders. Second time we managed to get our drinks as there were very few people.
L. M.
Great food and reasonably priced drinks. Overall, a good time in Headingly for those looking for a local pub.
P. H.
A perfectly grand pub but let's not kid ourselves that the "big screen" in the garden couldn't easily be replicated in your own back garden using a nominal mobile screen and a selfie stick.
R. O.
Would just like to thank Rich and all his staff for hosting our reunion made very welcome with a good spread put on, thank you for letting us do a collection for our regimental charity Rifles Care For Casualties and also thank you from Ed for having wheel chair access , fantastic day Thank You.
Regards Rob
T. G.
A great plzce tjat has moved with tje times, let age be no barrier!
I first visited over 30 years ago and it's was then... is now, one of the best pubs in Headingley (especially the outside area!).
If you are a parent visit your 'little one' at Uni, you won't feel out of place. Drop in for a beer before a bite at True Reds. :)
Parking is tight so plan that first or better still, walk in and do part of the Otley Run (!).
Enjoy. :)
a. j.
Can't beat it in the summer sunshine in the HUGE beer garden (if you can handle the stupid otley runners being drunk/loud/stupid/offensive). Word of warning tho don't expect a good pint. Had many occasions when i've had to take a beer back due to tasting cleaning fluid so stick to bottles if you have taste buds. Apart from that ace place!!
B. G.
Lovely refurb of one of my favourite pubs. The new chips are delicious and I love all the seating next to all the new windows into the garden :) And the fairy lights!!
D. K.
Fantastic fish and chips here. Chips were cooked to perfection as well as the fish. The bartender was very friendly also. Would recommend.
M. W.
Great beers and atmosphere, sport on most tv's and massive beer garden that used to be the Upper Skyrack Wapentak moot ground. Good food.
J. R.
Lovely big sunny beer garden. Friendly rugby fans
H. W.
£1.75 pints with student discount
M. G.
Beer spot on. Food excellent. Service topped it all off, great late lunch on a Sunday with the family. Thank you.
J. T.
Great pub. Good selection of beers and food. Friendly staff and nice mix of people.
N. A.
All good ,one of the bouncers was flexin a bit but all gravy bar that
R. B.
Lovely inside, great food selection, and very reasonable price good selection of beers and other drinks and great staff...perfect for our 10 strong party..5*....
N. H.
It serves decent food and alcohol. Good choice for a night out or even a meal with your family. Only issue is it's a bit expensive, especially considering it's a student area.
T. M.
Great food, large garden (but fake grass!). Limited range of beers on tap.
S. D.
Nice pub plenty of room and a nice choice of drinks
J. G.
Fantastic place to come when the suns out! Staff were friendly and the food was brilliant! Definitely spending the World Cup here!!
K. J. D.
Great beer garden, nothing more, nothing less.
D. R.
What a great pub, it's well looked after and the staff are very friendly, drinks are great and the beer garden is huge with a massive screen great for watching sport.
C. P.
Definitely a pub for large sports crowd, huge seating area outside. A load of lagers on tap, would prefer more ale choice though.
a. s.
Great for outdoors in the summer. Only really been for Otley runs, where I've always had the experience that they don't let in anyone that doesn't have English passport / driving license
S. B.
great beers , nice atmosphere and worth a visit
J. D.
Good food and drink.Excellent outside space for watching sport.
P. R.
A truly great pub atmosphere, good food served quickly, and beer prices are really cheap even for headingley
w. l.
Card machine wasn't working, wasn't told this until getting to the front of the queue to order food to then have to go away for cash. Food turned out to be okay and nice seating area to rest.
C. M.
Lovely atmosphere, quick service even though it was busy on match day. Food was great too.
G. H.
Pleasant surrounding big out door seating area ,big screen for sport
L. S.
Great place to drink and eat! Good prices. They have huge outside area, but sadly no dogs allowed :(
c.
Lots of outside space, full of students if you like that 🤷🏼♀️,
W. M.
Great atmosphere, great beers, had the pleasure to meet the gaffer and sealed the deal! Will definitely be back!
S. S.
Excellent, great covid measures, social distances tables, great food and excellent service.
F. B.
Very friendly staff great prices really nice decor and it's great that they have the ground floor which is quieter and more relaxed at pretty much all times and me up floor which is more suited for partying at the weekends
J. A.
Great menu. Also two seperate sections for otley runners and people wanting a more quiet night so it caters for everyone 👍
P. A.
Nice atmosphere. I can imagine its really nice in the summer with the outdoor seating. Food was fast! Full all day breakfast yum!!
D. B.
Let more friends join our table in a safe manner. Thumbs up from everyone 👍
A. E.
It was a quiet afternoon when here last and thankfully not to busy. Can get packed. Brilliant pub with a massive beer garden.
I. E.
Great beer garden, great pub but often gets stupidly busy, so get there in time!

A. C.
Combines the old traditional style pub with the modern bar.
Nice food at a good price.
G. M.
Great comedy night last Friday of the month. Improved ale selection since last visit, plastic glasses bit of a let down.
L. K.
Best beer garden in the UK
M. K.
Great choice of beers, well price and very friendly would certainly visit again when in the area thanks again.
J.
Good atmosphere, reasonable prices and great garden with a huge TV for sports
J. B.
