Reviews of Magna Carta
J.
Not a bad pub, popped in just before heading home after staying a night in Lincoln.
Can't comment on food as we didn't eat.
A nicer place inside than outside with plenty of seating on different levels (beware if you can't handle stairs) will definitely call in again on our next visit & possibly sample some grub.
M. S.
We didn't plan to visit a pub, so this was done on the fly. Stepping into Magna Carter, we were met with friendly welcomes and a lively atmosphere filled with chatter. Tables were clean and bar service was very easy. We ordered a typical pub grub : Steak n Ale pie and Gammon steak with a fried egg. The portions were generous and would say the quality was fair but not amazing. If I was back visiting Lincoln, I would return to this venue no problem at all.

In the old town beside the cathedral, this is a Guinness and Real Ale haven, that is not to say Gin and Whiskey et al are not present. Take yourself to the upper floors and look down upon others aimlessly wandering the streets looking for a place to relax. You are in heaven if you did not know already. I was admiring the eye candy 🤣🤣, and not just myself in the mirrors.

Lovely meal out. Good menu with usual pub food. A nice portion of food (sometimes I feel food is piled on a plate). Friendly bar staff who efficiently took our 3 separate orders for one table. Had nice chat with them when we went for other drinks. It got busy so best to get in early.
J. s.
Lovely little pub with character and charm. Found this pub by chance an had few beverages.
Staff very lovely they went out of there way to make me a special drink . Will visit again when next in Lincoln.

Love this pub! Perfect spot next to the castle and cathedral. The girls behind the bar are super attentive, friendly and happy to have a chat (and even a little sing song). Quiz night is fun as well. If you win you get a £35 bar tab (we won this week - yes!). Wide variety of beers on offer. A tasty soft drink is the J20 Elderflower Pressé.
F. A.
Great pub. A great place to stop by just after visiting the cathedral. The staff were so friendly and welcoming. They took the time to fuss our dog and give him treats. The human menu was great too. Well worth going to this pub on your visit to Lincoln.

We called into the Magna Carta after a visit to the Cathedral, the staff were very pleasant, we ate and meal was good. I want to thank the Manager who I think was called Karl for letting us take away some bottles of still mineral water, we weren't feeling that great during our stay and our hotel had no mineral water. The Magna Carta is in an excellent central location between the Cathedral and the Castle and gets busy, and the staff do a great job of keeping things going well. We were treated with warmth and good spirit, which totally made up for the cold disdain we were treated with during our stay at our hotel. We would return to the Magna Carta should we ever return to the City of Lincoln, every good wish to all staff x deb and john
G.
Good ale, friendly folk and right next to the awesome Lincoln Cathedral
At the top of Steep Hill …. Says what it does on the tin. Working up a thirst climbing it 😎

An unexpected visit to the Magna Carta on a Sunday night.
Refreshing lively pub offering entertainment, Open Mic Nite the main compare was very accommodating, due to a disability & made us feel welcome.
The manager & staff we're very friendly throughout the evening.
The acts were great & some were diverse for sure, & gave good performances throughout.
If your about in the top end of Lincoln near the cathedral give it a visit , you shouldn't be disappointed.

Went on a Friday and struggled to get a seat. Undeterred we tried a month later on a Thursday. Sat outside before a meal around 7pm, nice setting near to the cathedral. Went inside for a pint at 9pm and sat downstairs. Friendly welcoming staff, comfy chairs, relaxed atmosphere. Will definitely come again.
P. B.
Called in for a drink only. A very clean restaurant and well furnished. Good selection of drinks. Staff very efficient and friendly. The menu was impressive and will make a point of eating there on our next visit.
A. H.
Nice beer pretty views, good food, good resting place after the climb up steep hill
E. H.
We came to Lincoln to celebrate our joint 25 year long service award with our company, and my Fiancée's Birthday. Whilst in Lincoln, we visited The Magna Carter pub, the staff are extremely friendly, helpful, respectful and nothing is too much trouble. The place is clean and welcoming, and we had a great night, so much so, we are back today. Go visit, you won't regret it! Thanks guys, Thanks Magna Carter.

This is a lovely pub in one of the best locations in Lincoln. The outdoor seating gives wonderful views of the cathedral and castle. Simply beautiful.
So what a shame that on a lovely summer’s evening the staff insist on packing the seating area away at 21:30 and insisting you move indoors. I felt sorry for the tourists sat next to me - both smokers who essentially were being told it’s time to return to your hotel.
Why?
Such small minded thinking! What happened to putting customer satisfaction first?
I wish I could say this is an isolated experience, but sadly my home city is guilty of this kind of approach all too often.
j. P.
A lovely pub in the heart of historic Lincoln with a great range of alcoholic and non alcoholic beverages. Food served daily hosted by a very pleasant team of staff. Well worth a visit!
A. S.
Stopped here for a drink after walking round the cathedral. Received a very warm welcome by all the staff, nicely furnished and clean. Didn’t eat but the food coming from the kitchen looked very good
M. A.
Fabulous pub in a amazing location. No cask ales but we're told they got battered over the bank holiday so fair enough and nice cold San Miguel went down a treat . Friendly attentive staff added to a overall 5 star experience.
a. t.
Just had a lovely light lunch here with friends, lovely fresh food, friendly staff, very accommodating for our son's taste.lovely looking place and a great name. Definitely visit again. Thankyou
S.
Popped in for a quick pint of ale. Staff were great. Had the best pint of Hobgoblin Gold, ever. Well kept looked after draught ales and lager.

Typical city centre pub, polite and friendly staff, good choice of beers. Also dog friendly. My only mild criticism is that the background music made it difficult to have a quiet conversation.
B. K.
Visited on a quiet Sunday , staff were fab ,quirky little place with a fab feel , staff were very pleasant . Me and Mrs only had the soup and after a short delayed emerged piping hot and delicious...Will definitely be back ...thanks and see you on the ice xx
C. B.
A lovely, cosy little pub with friendly and accommodating staff. The food was delicious - everything was cooked fresh. Would definitely recommend to anyone visiting Lincoln.
a. M. m.
An amazing day, everyone was very accommodating and friendly. The service was Abit slow and I would have liked, the quality was good though. I will be coming back definitely
F. D.
Such a lovely environment, friendly staff, good prices, nice atmosphere and good views, very homey and enjoyed the quiz night. Like a family run home.

The food was lovely too ☺️
T. N.
It's an amazing visit if you enjoy getting to know the history. Visiting the castle where the Magna Carta is not avout just history. You can walk the walls and get stunning views of Lincoln and the cathedral.
V. V.
Great pub with amazing staff. Popped in for a lunch with Mrs and was astonished! Great atmosphere, great menu, great staff and amazing service. Location is fascinating right next to historic landmark of Lincoln, cathedral and castle grounds are right next to it. Food was great tasting and a generous portion,as well as great price. Thanks all!
O. S.
Service not rushed despite being busy but efficient and polite, a number of menu items were unavailable and the food was just cooked. Otherwise clean and friendly.
h. c.
Came to visit friends at Uni in Lincoln and we went to the Magna Carter for food. I had the cowboy burger which was amazing, especially the fries. The service was fast and friendly, and faith was lovely warm and welcoming! 100% recommended
N. J.
After two visits to the Magna Carta in as many weeks, and after promising to shout from the rooftops about the excellent quality real ale, here I am, shouting from the rooftops about the excellent quality ale!
Not only that, but the bar staff were very friendly and attentive, so hats off to you all, and thank you.
S. G.
This is a lovely pub, in a lovely location with indoor and outdoor seating. A pit stop is very much needed at the top of steep hill, and this is certainly the place to do it
T.
Popped in on the last evening of our stay and were encouraged to take part in the pub quiz. Very welcoming, excellent fun and the staff, including Karl the quizmaster, were great. Toilets were clean, drinks reasonably priced and we were well looked after. If you're in the area call in!
J. H.
Overall pretty good, but the gents toilets stink and did on my last visit which was months ago
L. D.
Great place plenty to see and do, guided tours and very informative cost £15 adult, some parts wheel chair accessable, others quite challenging, lots of steps, great views from the castle walk, lots of toilets and a cafe, so far visited twice and sure will be back
S. S.
Always excellent service with a smile from Lou, Carl and the staff. Best pub in Lincoln.
J. P.
Great beer, location is second to none. If you fancy a drink encompassed by Lincoln castle and cathedral look no further.
M. E.
Lovely pub, decorated nicely and had a good atmosphere! Was served by Lana who was really friendly and made us feel welcomed :)
J. L.
Visited the Magna Carta from Newcastle & Leicester. Millie is a gem keep her safe! Great service, great recommendations and a lovely smile to boot!
J. D.
We love coming to the quiz Wednesdays for free and it's a good laugh. Quizmaster and Callum ( with 3 ls) we love you. See you next week.

R. J.
Never have I witnessed such majestic quiz mastery as that delivered by Callum at the Magna Carta. He was a delight. Outstanding.
J. R.
Karl: Host - quiz master. Very funny and the quiz night is brilliant. Yes it’s a Monday but why not! All the staff are brilliant and funny. Welcoming: what more could you ask for? The pubs great too and so is the beer. Jay is friendly and very funny host!
P. M.
Great pub in the old part of the city. Lovely selection of beers - been here a few times. Very friendly welcoming staff - must try the food soon. Lovely proper pub atmosphere.
O. T.
Arrived in the rain to a warm and cozy environment, very friendly staff, not too busy either. Drinks and food were served very quickly and the quality was quite adequate. Karl brought the banter and made sure we were comfortable, a proper legend.
d. l.
Popped in yesterday after a day of wondering around Lincoln, glad we did. very friendly welcome. nice and clean pub with prompt service.
Fantastic pint of Guinness and, she assures me, a great range of gins.
Decided to have some dinner glad to say the food was fantastic, steak was perfectly cooked ,I am very fussy about my steak, with a generous amount of chips , peas and a huge tomato. Her fish and chips was huge and extremally moist and tasty.
Would highly recommend that if your in Lincoln you visit the Magna Carta, we will be back.
M. V.
This pub is always friendly and welcoming and in a great location. The duty manager Jay is very helpful and cannot do enough for you. I know the pub has friendly competition for reviews and I am more than happy to endorse his fabulous service. .
H. M.
Nice pub, good food and selection of drinks, nice polite staff.
R. H.
Really good proper pub in a great location. Food and drink reasonably priced with friendly helpful staff.
Portions were on the small side but the quality was there, we informed the front of house staff about the portions and the serving situation was explained.
Non the less a fine pub worth a visit.
L. W.
Nice atmosphere , friendly staff who were really polite not matter how busy they were.
A. G.
Came for the Monday pub quiz, dog friendly on the main floor and -1. There were 60 questions, varied for all ages and knowledge, and the staff were really friendly and accommodating
J. T. &. C.
Go early so you have plenty of time to visit all the indoor exhibits. Naturally, no photos are allowed inside the room where the Magna Carta is kept however, you can purchase a replica at the tourist information centre where you also purchase your entrance tickets. Excellent staff, very knowledgeable and helpful.
B. H.
Food was excellent i went for the mushroom and root vegetable pie and chips👌very tasty, great little pub that fits in well with the history of the location also very dog friendly
M. B.
Great place, love the friendly atmosphere expecially Faith who always makes everyone welcome.
L. N.
Brilliant establishment, great atmosphere and music. Fantastic service by Faith, Jenny and Lou. Also took advantage of the fizz Friday deal, big bottle of Prosecco; £11.95!
B. g.
Staff are very friendly. Especially Jenny and Faith. The pub is clean and tidy. Placed in between the cathedral and castle. In up hill quarter.
M. K.
The two girls behind the bar, Faith and a girl with dyed blonde hair (I think she was being trained) we’re both really nice and attentive with their service. Will definitely come back!
C. N.
Very nice pub, with very helpful staff and great service.
C. T.
The bar man was amazing. So funny and attentive.
A. R.
Great atmosphere, good selection of drinks, friendly locals.
N. c.
Nice pub, friendly staff. Very good location
D. G.
Went to the pub for an open mic night. It was brilliant. The bar staff were super friendly and couldn't do enough for us. Would definitely return.
J. A.
Friendly staff but chicken and bacon super salad was just an ordinary salad which was a bit disappointing
R. R.
What a gem of a pub!
Good ales.
Reasonable prices!
Lovely staff!! (that's always a good thing!).
Comfortable seating.
Does not serve food BUT plenty of good restaurants within walking distance!
I do not give 5 stars easily but this place deserves it😊🌟
J. W.
Friendly staff
Always great service
Good beer served in perfectly clean glassware 10/10
r.
Great setting and great service! This is our new local in Lincoln and is highly recommended.
J. H.
Cracking pub with an amazing atmosphere would recommend for any tourists visiting the cathedral and the castle perfect location and great staff
B. D.
Nice atmosphere with plenty of space/tables. In a really convenient location too, between the castle and the cathedral.
Unfortunately, food is entirely average; frozen food heated well. Had an issue with one of the meals being burnt today - the manager was incredibly reasonable, polite and professional, offering a replacement meal and a refund.
Definitely worth coming for some drinks, but if you wanna eat, be careful what you choose
M. H.
We came here to order drinks, but the order came wrong and when we said something, the waitress got really stroppy with us as if it was our fault, but the receipt clearly showed what we ordered. I'm sure many people come here and have a lovely experience, but we didn't.
Lovely outside seating and reasonable pricing. Great location. View of cathedral and castle and good music was there when we were there.
S.
Called in after looking around the cathedral and castle, got a warm welcome and a well kept pint of bitter. Great ambience friendly and efficient staff, value for money. Will def go again
P. D.
A lovely, welcoming pub. The staff are always friendly and bubbly, while providing excellent service. The pub is spacious inside with lots of choice of seating. Always a guaranteed good pint. Would recommend magna carta greatly, and its weekly events such as the quizzes and open mic night.
T. W.
A Marstons pub. As an historic building access is limited for the disabled to the front five tables, which are all high (bar seat) tables so the pub hasn't thought that through. Beyond that small area everything else including the actual bar and the toilets are either up a single flight of stairs to the first floor or up three then down a flight to the basement. The beer is cheap, the view of the street (and Cathedral from a few seats, if you lean back and look over your shoulder) is very nice.
r.
Great service from all the staff today, especially Nico, lovely food and bought out quickly and checked back on us to make sure everything was ok. Will definitely be back when I'm not driving to sample the gin selection.
a. F.
Great pub good ales lively atmosphere fantastic views and my shops just around the corner. Lovely place to relax in the summer and cosy in the winter, Sundays are music nights and very entertaining. Has a brand new layout and colour scheme with steampunk themes and a champagne table. 🍾🥂
M. S.
Excellent service, Great hog goblin and food. Top location too.
D. C.
Nice dog friendly pub, handy for the castle and cathedral, very reasonable prices too
L. M.
A perfectly situated building with a strong sense of character. The food is tasty and generously portioned. Lovely staff are the cherry on top.
D. L.
Brilliant pub quiz every Wednesday, fantastic atmosphere from the host Nico and is always a great laugh! From your favourite quiz team WLTDO
S. D.
We use the function room regularly for our book group; it's a comfortable room, the staff are always friendly and helpful and the drinks range is excellent.
L. W.
A good variety and selection of food options at reasonable prices. Food arrived quickly and was enjoyed by all. Would visit again. Staff were friendly too!
R. C.
Lovely pub. Well kept beers. Friendly staff ( especially Karl ). Will definitely be back. 👌
G. C.
Fantastic staff and fantastic food thank you for making us feel welcome. Top job 👍🏻
T. P.
From the outside the Magna Carter doesn't look very appealing it looks very tired but once inside it's very welcoming and the decor is pleasent.
We called in for a drink and was promptly served by a very polite bar tender. The only thing that I didn't like was when we had our second drink the double jack Daniels was served in a plastic glass.
The inside of the pub is very clean (no murkey corners of sticky tables) the down side is that there are lots of steps and stairs (you could get a cardio work out here cheaper than the gym). Whilst having a drink, we would defenetly use it again if we were in the area again.
V. H.
Great atmosphere, food and excellent service, even when busy!
d. p.
Great for a coffee after slog up the hill. Lovely place with great looking cathedral
K. P.
Great pub. Dog friendly. Great food.
C. J.
Love sitting at the window of this pub and watching the people of Lincoln go by. Also great view of castle
K. H.
I couldn't fault the food, staff or the interior, it was just the wait for food we found slightly problematic for an average tuesday early lunchtime.
Great menu, good value for money too, which was a surprise. All in all I think we would go back.
C. S.
Nice pub, lovely atmosphere, great staff.
Nice pit stop between the cathedral and castle.
R. C.
Can't pick a better placed pub in Lincoln. Smack between the Castle and Cathedral. Watch the world go by, great service by Karl and the team.
C. J.
Had a lovely chat with Lana she is very kind and friendly, would recommend
A. W.
Perfect location right now the cathedral. Great lunchtime treat. Food was freshly cooked, hot and yummy. Staff very friendly too.
Took our dogs in as well. Bravo
S.
We went in for a pint after the very wet Lincoln 10k. We were made to feel very welcome by the staff. We asked for Hobgoblin, it ran out midway thru pulling second pint, they gave us an extra glass so we could share the first pint while they changed the barrel. They then brought the second pint to our table. The beer was excellent quality and although it was quiet in there the atmosphere was welcoming.
Thanks, we will be back
R. W.
Very busy weekend but still have time to check if everything is ok
O. F.
Amazing pub! Brilliant location and brilliant service!
A. L.
Top lunch, happily come back for dinner sometime
D. B.
Faith served us and she was so welcoming and lovely!! Highly recommend this pub!! Thank you xxx
A. M.
front of house team very good, food took 45min and more to arrive and was pretty simple order, ordered steak medium rare and got an old boot resembling piece of meat, not impressed , but my son loved the sausages and mash , its hard to mess those up. I think chefs having very bad day
K. R.

J. W.
Good fun evening of a quiz. And we didn't even win, but congratulations we enjoyed ourselves.
G. J.
Whenever we're in Lincoln we like to have a meal and a drink at the Magna Carta.
Friendly staff and and pleasant surroundings.
D. j.
Moving to see one of the four original copies of a document that has inspired UK and USA law.
C. G.
Just had a drink. Food menu looked ok but sandwiches had fillings I didn't like but didn't ask if they would do something more ordinary so can't really make any comment on food.
g. h.
Went to see the Magna Carta in it's Lincoln Castle home especially as the Doomsday Book was on display at the same time. Such a wonderful experience to be able to look at both these hugely historical documents. I was blown away by how tiny and neat the writing in the Doomsday Book was, and how rarely this priceless document sees the light of day. It was a massive coup for Lincoln to secure it for a visit
P. W.
Went here several times, one night had a charity event with various rock band/singers which was a great night. Choice of hand pull beer a bit limited so drank Guinness for a change.
J. D.
Lovely pub in the heart of uphill Lincoln. Always great service when we're there. Wide range of drinks so they don't disappoint. Definitely worth a visit
G. M.
Excellent meal with great service from behind the bar. Definitely reccomend for a nice place to eat with lovely view of the cathedral!
A. J.
Gorgeous building and great ales!
Popped in for a swift guiness before experiencing the 'Ghost tour' which was also amazing and very informative both the tour guide and the bar staff.
The magna Carter is haunted by a tall lady who can be seen on the stairs so well worth a visit.
A. B.
Faith gave fantastic customer service! Fizz friday is a great offer
R. P.
Our local when we visit Lincoln, you get a great pint here and the staff are very friendly. Definitely recommend that you visit when in the area....😀
T. M.
Sat outside enjoying the graduation festivities. Quite busy but hot served soon enough. Sadly couldn't sit out beyond 9.00 which was a bit of a shame. Pleasant atmosphere
C. G.
Great location in the heart of Lincoln, a stone's throw away from the castle and cathedral. Management and staff were not particularly friendly when approaching closing, they made it clear that they wanted us out and hounded is a few times, bell was wing once for last orders, without being given a chance to come downstairs to put last orders in. Not keen on their approach of I'm honest, there are much better ways to treat your customer's.
B. C.
Made welcome by all the friendly staff who immediately made us feel at home! Enjoyed a meal/drinks and took part in their quiz night .
Also, it's situated in the oldest and most handsome part of Lincoln, just by the cathedral
E. N.
Great pub, friendly atmosphere, highly recommend quiz nights, Nico is a fab host
A. S.
Great pub quizes and drinks. Location and feel are good. Atmospheric.
S. C.
Nico was an absolute delight. We could not fault the drinks or service and will definitely return
j. b.
Owing to staff shortages there was going to be a long wait for food so we only had a drink, then went elsewhere.
H.
Good atmosphere, friendly staff. Well kept ale. Karl served us for the night, knows his stuff .
A. A.
Went in today with 6 dogs. Had a lovely downstairs area for the dogs. Food was nothing fancy but nice and filling pub grub at decent prices

Decent pub at the heart of the cathedral Quarter in Lincoln. Handy for events at the top end of the city. Quite busy so had to climb upstairs for seats but great view out.

Nice pub found at the top of Steep Hill. Friendly staff and a great quiz hosted by the extremely affable Karl with a K.
A. B.
Very nice food! Sausages are amazing !
T. D.
Really busy pub with excellent customer service. Nice for a stop off drink when working from top of Lincoln hill area back down the steep hill to city centre bars.
J. L.
Nice pub, just a quick refreshment break though.
r. f.
Good old school pub right at the top of the steep hill and challenge but a good pint at the end of it pleasant welcoming staff
N. W.
Fantastic service as always. Faith always serves with a smile 😃
D. M.
I was only in here for one pint but it was delicious, the staff were friendly, welcoming, and chatty.
D. R.
A well presented city pub, with a reasonable ale selection, typical of a brewery owned. The menu had a good selection, although a number of options were unavailable. We opted for burgers, which were all very good. Service was a tad slow, for what was a quiet Monday late lunch but not off-putting.
J. F.
A great little pub, nice & cosy. Staff are very friendly and attentive. Prices are ok too, we don't have a dog but dogs are welcome!
G. R.
Lovely little pub with a good selection of beers on tap! We took part in the quiz night which was great fun! Would recommend!

Visited yesterday for the first time since the covid crisis. I'd booked online during the week, and our usual table was free. A one way queue system at the bar made us feel very safe, and there was evidence of extra cleaning etc. It was great to be back, and anyone still worried should take comfort that the staff are doing their very best. A great afternoon out!
S. B.
Great pub, helpful and friendly staff
T.
Great food great service friendly staff Karl made us feel very welcome
S. C.
Lovely place. Nice vibe.
L. E.
Had a cowboy burger very nice
M. G.
Nice place, run out of a lot of the menu, the beer was good and the staff were friendly
m. c.
Still waiting for our onion rings. 😞
Although we were asked twice if everything was OK, so I should of asked for them.
All staff were polite
C. D.
Only stopped for a quick beer but seemed very clean and friendly with a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Good range of beers and spirits, plus they also do food. Recommend for a pit stop at the top of Steep Hill before doing all the historical locations.
R. B.
Fantastic positioning at the top of Steep Hill, between the castle and the cathedral, ensures it is a busy establishment. The way it is set out with stairs all over to different sitting areas, makes it attractive to the old style pub fan but makes it impossible for those with mobility problems. The beers are acceptable without being of note (in my opinion). The drinks are pricey in my view but acceptable for the positioning and ambience of the place. When the weather is good enough, there is limited seating outside.
The down sides are that this can be a very busy pub, so getting served is lengthy at times (standing away from stair entrances & the window, seems to help). Also there is a big screen TV, that is on all the time, that doesn't seem to fit in with the pub (although I understand why they would have it for sports, maybe).
Overall, worth a visit. :)
R. C.
Nice beer choices. Lots of menu not avaliable but accomadating staff.
S. G.
Carls a fab quiz master. Enjoy the quiz every Monday at 7.30. Only won once….so far
T. I.
It was by no means obvious that one had to order at the bar initially. That apart, my rump steak was very good.
W. G.
Enjoyable quick drink on Halloween (therefore cannot comment on the food/restaurant part). Greeted by friendly staff, accompanied to table, table service for drinks – following Covid-19 safety protocol. Thank you, looking forward to our next visit.
D. R.
The seating area looking on to the Castle Square in historic Uphill Lincoln is a great place to enjoy a drink and people watch.
J. G.
Busy pub serving food. Staff are friendly and there is a good choice of food and drink. Seating is over 3/4 floors with some areas more intimate. Food is average and the coffee was awful. The pub quiz on a Wednesday is not run of the mill and is well attended.
D. D.
Always a good drink in there staff are excellent being from Lincoln always good to go into local pubs and also live music on a Sunday
T. B.
Service to match the splendid location. Covid-affected but informative, open, helpful and cheerful. And the beer and food were good too.
K. S.
Situated between the Cathedral and the Castle, this is a traditional pub serving locals and tourists, with a smattering of students in the evening. OK for a drink and a bite if you are in the area. It has a small outdoor seating area, that is usually full in good weather. The pub is on three levels, and is best suited to the able-bodied, as even on the entrance level there are steps up to the bar.
J. S.
Hats off to Niko for being the best server for our pub golf <3
S. C. S.
This is a good pub right in the heart of the cathedral district. It has a decent menu with stuff for everyone, a good selection of beers, and lots of seating. The food itself is good, at least a step above typical pub fare. Two additional pluses, they are dog friendly, and they have outdoor seating right on the square, which is great for enjoying the atmosphere of Lincoln.
l.
I had a very positive experience with Magna Carta last night, arrived with a friend without a booking, we were offered seats outside but if it rained it was at our own risk of getting wet, on entry to get drinks the process was clearly explained, hand sanitizer was available on entry and by the toilets, floor markings very clear, all the customers seemed relaxed and when a table inside became available (was about an hour) we were offered the chance to move inside(which we weren’t expecting but gladly took) but not until the table and chairs had been wiped and sanitized and I witnessed this process throughout the evening here and was very thorough! Well done guys! And thank you for making us welcome.
A. L.
Nice pub for mic nights, well prepared, cool music. One of the best mic night set ups!
s. M.
Lovely food very friendly staff
S. F.
Dog friendly, helpful staff with good quality food and able to amend menu items for gluten free although no actual gluten free menu
L. N.
Very friendly staff lovely atmosphere
A. G.
Came here after visiting relative in local hospice.
Very helpful staff, wife is coeliac staff sorted out error in kitchen with item that was marked on menu as gluten-free but wasn't, came and apologised to us and had a list of suitable options, even refunded the cost difference! Excellent chips and a great choice of drinks. Ten out of ten for effort, and a fresh tasty meal. 😎
a. w.
Friendly staff good choice of food and drink would recommend
A. D.
Great pub, faith was lovely and very welcoming
S. M.
Great location to enjoy a pint and some good company foods not bad and staff very polite. It's. Good part of Lincoln...
B. G.
Drinks and food at the Magna Carta Exceptional service from Faith!
S. H.
Nice pub prices not too bad compared too other places
J. W. (. S.
Lovely pub in the heart of the Lincoln Cathedral District. Well worth a visit.
T. T.
Nice cosy pub with welcoming staff and great atmosphere, was well looked after and the beer was top class
R. B.
Great, friendly staff, and good beer! After buying two pints of ale we were recommended to come back for £2 per pint on a Sunday. Really nice to sit out in the sun surrounded by a backdrop of the castle and cathedral.
A. G.
Nice to sit outside and watch people walk by
S. M.
Nice pub, friendly staff, good service, and very welcome seats after walking up the steep Street to get there!
L. H.
It may be a tourist trap but it's well worth it. The staff are managing the covid guidelines well whilst still being friendly and professional. The prices are reasonable considering its location and it makes climbing Steep Hill well worth it.
D.
Fantastic location looking out at the Castle and the Cathedral at the top of Steep Hill.
Really good selection of drinks and a good, lively atmosphere on a Saturday night. Nice interior decor which was sympathetic to the beautiful olde worlde building in which this business sits.
Would have liked to take a look upstairs but was packed out with customers even before 7pm which, obviously, is a testament to a good pub!
J. O.
Hubby went in here for a pint. It's dog friendly, but my husband said that it wasn't suitable for me, as l have a back condition and he said l would have had diffuculty sitting on the very high chairs there. He did however enjoy his Pint and found everyone friendly.
L. M.
Pretty nice pub. Pretty nice spot. Up market pub. Pretty good. 👍
F. S.
Nice pub, perfectly situated at the top of a steep hill and between the castle and cathedral. Staff are nice, has a nive selection of beers on tap. Can get full at times.
R. F.
Cute little pub. Enjoyed a nice drink there. Staff were friendly.
L. N.
Very busy when we went on a Friday evening & full of students. Nowhere to sit but our pints of Hobgoblin were excellent. Had expected a bigger range of real ale. Great location near the Cathedral. Will visit again when it's a quieter time of day.
J. I.
Went here for a christmas get together & meal with colleagues & I have to say we were all disappointed. Food was edible, but the majority we ordered was not available so we had to 'make do' with what there was. Condiments etc. were also not available or sauce bottles were empty. No full fat coke or even cans of it. No stirrers for drinks that needed to be stirred & teaspoons were given to do this task. We ordered pots of tea & the milk came in a cup as there were no more jugs for the milk to go in. Only one ladies toilet available as the other one was full to the brim & blocked. I have given three stars for the waitress only. They worked their socks off & continuously kept apologising to us. We left a large tip for the waitress only & we would have not tipped at all if it was not for the service this waitress gave us. We made the best of it on such a miserable wet day, however, we have said we would not come here again. Requires better management of the whole place.
B. B.
Bar staff were nice, layout is a little confusing though! Toilet location seemed a bit of a mystery but a lovely time there nonetheless
S. B.
Very nice pub. Great area. Looks nice since they refurbished it. The bar staff who were in on Friday evening were plesent, full of smiles and efficient. Got served straight away
P. M.
Callum was magnificent as quiz host
K. W.
Lovely pub friendly staff
G.
Amazing chilled atmosphere especially downstairs will come here again
A. O.
Nico runs a great quiz at 7:30pm on Wednesday!
G. G.
Great location on castle square. I haven't been to this pub for a while, but it always looks busy. It has a good selection of alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks, plus tea coffee etc.
It also serves good food, and if you get a window seat upstairs, it is a great viewing platform, to watch the world go by. There is plenty of comfortable seating, which affords you some privacy whilst you wine or dine, and there is seating outside as well.
Good atmosphere, helpful staff, but can get very crowded and busy at times.
N. L.
They look after their beer. There is ample seating over three floors and it is in a great location.
Especially good when they have live music. Can appear slightly mass market at times, hence the drop to 4 stars.
K. B.
Quick service and good food.
T. G.
Sorry to say good beer Marston's Pedigree but the food not so good. Small portions with the fish and chips swimming in oil.
Myself and the Son in-law had the mixed grill NO egg or mushroom no offer to add something to replace them Not a place I be would eat again.
T. S.
When you finally get to the top of Steep Hill, this place is an absolute life saver! Go there before you visit the castle or (better idea) the wonderful Lincoln Cathedral! And then go back to Magna Carta before you start the climb down :-)
Their pub quiz is quite fun and well arranged, though a bit more difficult to master than I had hoped...
Nice selection of drinks, good atmosphere... I'll surely visit this pub again next time I go to Lincoln.
(Extra points for guessing why it is called the Magna Carta, by the way...)
C. F.
Lovely place.Great location. Polite staff and remember what you drink. 😉
L. C.
Great pub especially sat outside Karl is a top bloke great bar staff
d.
Very nice pub with a good choice of drinks.
Fantastic location between the Cathedral and Castle.
Didn't eat here but the food and menu looked really good.
Nice friendly atmosphere.
Dog friendly.
G. C.
Good service and great selection of drinks
M. F.
a nice pub but dropped a star due to bar staff openly complaining about customers at closing time. very unprofessional
A. M.
Lovely pub, great location and beer selection good
J. H.
Stopped by for a coffee whilst we waited for our son before driving home to Derbyshire. It was busy at 8:00pm on a Wednesday, but we found a seat upstairs. (We later realised that they have a free quiz on Wednesday at 9:00pm!) They only had filter coffee, but it was very good & sensibly priced.
K. L.
Fantastic band playing, friendly staff, good atmosphere, lots of space.
J. C.
This is a great Marston's pub with a good selection of beers and spirits - particularly Gin as you'd expect currently. We were there on a quiz night, so the atmosphere was muted, but it seemed to be a good quiz - a traditional one at that.
N. W.
Fantastic bar at the top of steep hill, with a view of the castle a perfect place to eat and drink. Would recommend a visit. Friendly staff and a perfect pint. Only in Lincoln for a couple of days but made several visits.
A. L.
I use to really like this pub when I visted Lincoln but I hadn't been able to get there for about year. The pub and the beers hasn't changed but the menu has and for the worse!
Firstly, you can't read it! It is a small font type on brown paper and the lights are low.
I went online to download the menu which was available on their website. That went well until I realised it was not current. It was the old menu I was used to. That offered good choice of quality dishes. The replacement offers little choice.
I solved the reading problem by using my tablet to photograph the menu and blow it up.
J. K.
Good pub, nice atmosphere and a good quiz on Wednesdays, from the drew peacock team
L. T.
Good amount of space plenty of tables
Good selection of beers and rum
Would definitely go back
J. G.
Top notch pub grub. Could have earned an extra star should the bar staff been a little more friendly.
I. N.
Good little pub! Food was superb. Very busy but didn't have to wait that long to get seated. Good location for everything uphill of the main town.
M. B.
Very popular pub at the top of Lincoln's "Steep Hill".
Tends to be a stopping off point for people going to, and from, the bars in the city center. Good selection of drinks at reasonable prices and a small outside area in the summer months.
Nice place to sit in the window and watch the world go by.
L. H.
Lovely location near the cathedral and castle good normal pub grub and pleasant atmosphere
A. W.
Lovely pub with friendly staff. Right between the castle and the cathedral. What could be better.
J.
Faith was great! Perfect pint and very friendly.
m. a.
Faith is an amazing barmaid ! Lovely place !
R. W.
A conveniently located pub for both the castle and cathedral. It is part of the Marston's chain, so standard quality, better than Whetherspoons, generally, but much cheaper than the adjacent Wig and Mitre. £6.95 for a pint, a very nice burger and chips.
e. b.
Amazing spot, such character and weirdly the cheapest pint that I've found in Lincoln
t. g.
Love the atmosphere in here, staff very helpful, always pop in on Xmas markets for meal.
J. F.
The food has got much better in the last 12 months, different chef maybe?. Always a quality pint of real ale though. Never a bad atmosphere and the staff are friendly no matter how busy it is.
H. D.
Great value food in a modern clean environment. Friendly staff and an excellent range of beers from the Marstons stable. Well worth a trip here. You need a drink after the "hill climb" .. and another!
E. P.
The bar staff were very nice, Kieran and Evie were wonderful and very welcoming and the quiz was very enjoyable.
T. C. K.
Great Marstons pub in the centre of historic Lincoln, situated between the cathedral and the castle. Friendly service and a good range of real ales are on offer, as well as lagers, spirits etc. Car parking and several eateries within walking distance 😊! It can get busy on bank holidays and when a live band are playing, but nice and quiet at other times.
N. B.
Amazing visit Amazing team absolutely loved the open mic we will be back.
H. N.
Excellent pub. Friendly staff and great atmosphere!
O. S.
Good Stella and friendly staff
D. T.
Expensive for what it is, but this is purely based on its location. Atmosphere inside all depends on the crowd that has taken up residence at the bar. Can be a great place to settle for an evening of drinks, but it has also been the worst place to be on a Saturday night on more than one occasion.
Good selection of Gin!
B. W.
Great pub in between the castle and cathedral. Good prices and mark all vegetarian, vegan and gluten free dishes on the menu. Few more vegan options and they'd get 6 stars from me
J. C.
A good sized pub at the top of steep hill. Reasonable clientele. The selection behind the bar can be quite hit and miss, it's a Marston pub so mostly just carries the mainstream well known stuff but occasionally does have things more interesting.
C. M.
Great place with even greater guys.
T. J.
Great pub, dog friendly and a quiz too boot.
A. S.
Friendly service with an excellent view.
R. M.
Busy but with quieter areas to sit and eat on a Saturday lunchtime. We are sandwiches with chips/salad which was done nicely and reasonable value, while looking out at bits of old Lincoln.
T. S.
Right between the Cathedral and the Castle. Fair priced meals, standard range of drinks (missed out a star for not having any local real ales). Quick and friendly service.
N. H.
Excellent pub and Dog friendly which is a huge bonus for us. Doggies are allowed in bar area and little seating area downstairs.
Great food and drinks :)
J. G.
Great pub, gin selection out of this world and not sure of the guy's name but one of the best doormen I've ever met! Very knowledgeable
J. G.
Nice bar good ale friendly polite staff
H. R.
Lovely staff, nice atmosphere, great location 😊
P. V.
Fabulous place lots of character, special mention to Michelle behind the bar, really friendly, hilarious antics with the naughty elf. Definitely make a point of heading to the Magna Carta when next in town
J. V.
Popped in for a drink and sit down whilst visiting the Christmas Market in Lincoln. Everyone was there.... from students to older patrons. Brilliant atmosphere, live music..... buzzing place. May revisit tomorrow!
H. S.
Always a nice place for a casual drink. Very quiet last night which made it a bit more relaxed than usual. Bit of rubbish under the tables upstairs though.
R. B.
Go and see it. It's one of the most important documents in Western history.
It's nicely presented in Lincoln Castle, along with it's sister documents the Charter of the Forest.
Admission to Lincoln Castle also includes a tour of the Victoria Prison inside the castle walls.
D. O.
Great traditional pub
C. M.
Fantastic service and super friendly 👏 😀 we will be back..
H. C. M.
Nice boozer in great location, step in for a well deserved pint after the long walk up steep hill, bar has recently been refurbished & modern & bright looking , good selection of beers, if your lucky you can get a seat outside in the summer or a nice seat by the windows & people watch as its at a great location however not given 5 stars as brought ma kids here for a meal who all had cheesy chips @ £3, not a lot of chips or cheese, also paid £2 for onions between 5 of us & there was 4 onion rings in the dish, the BBQ pulled pork sandwiches were nice but not a lot of meat inside
S.
Nice pub at the top of steep hill. Plenty of srinks to chose from. Nice and friendly staff and a rrally good atmosphere, would visit again. Prices are reasonable too!
A. D.
The reason for going to this place is very unfortunate. That being said, this venue is great. I had a couple of mulled ciders here and they tasted great. Food was average but the venue did exactly what we needed it to do and I will come back here in the future.
T. H.
Friendly staff. Jay served us and looked after us well.
M. W.
I frequent quite often at the Magna Carta, its recently had a nice face-lift and within its good position in the Bailgate area of Lincoln has lovely views of the Castle. Good selection of beers and food with occasional bands playing, this is a great place to pop in if in the area.
T. P.
It's a nice place with a good range of drinks. We went quite late so didn't order food. Friendly staff and good cleanliness.
A. G.
Lovely kind staff with a cosy family environment
Special thanks to Carl and jay
R.
Magna Carta is a standard pub, nothing extraordinary. The atmosphere is nice. The drinks are nice. There’s not much more to say.
P. B.
Nice pub friendly and good 🍺 beers
I. C.
Re furb is fab. Friendly staff
C.
Nice pub. Good beer, food was okay but the "cooked" broccoli was raw... not par boiled, not al dente, but completely raw... other than that though it was very nice and I would go back.
H. F.
We had pies ( which were delicious) but the mash wasn't great and the peas and carrots were overcooked.
However, the pub is lovely and so are the staff.
T. K.
Situated in a great place between the castle and cathedral.Service, food, and drinks good lovely place.
B. S.
Great food, great prices considering it's in a super touristy part of Lincoln, right between cathedral and the castle. Nice decor and quiet atmosphere inside. Outdoor seating available.
W. G.
Decent pub. Loud and busy on a Saturday but if that's your thing then this is it
N. D.
Brilliant sandwich and Spiced Cider. Reasonably priced. Only problem is a lot of steps so if you have mobility problems you might be lucky and get one of the tables on the level if not?????
p. k.
Excellent pub right in the centre of the oldest part of the city close to the Cathedral and the rows of quaint out of the ordinary shops on the narrow cobbled streets, more than worth a visit
M. H.
This became our "local" on our Lincoln break, nice atmosphere, great staff.
G.
Nice cosy pub, next to the castle and close to cathedral
K. C.
Sat outside lovely view of cathedral and castle only had drinks good pub
P. P.
Jay was fantastic always smiling and very helpful
k. s.
Nice cozy pub on multiple levels. Live music on Sundays good choice of ales and foreign beers. Gammon steak was really nice and good quality
M. F.
Good value ale.
A. C.
The original timeless cathedral quarter boozer. Absorb the history as you partake the excellent range of local ales and drinks. Live music regularly and often a re-enacter kicking around to confuse the era!
J. H.
It was what you would expect from a chain. Staff were jolly nice.
B. D.
I didn't know Mitsubishi made pubs but then I realised Magna Carta was a fancy name for a medieval document in this town. This pub has taken advantage of the towns heritage and used it to name their pub - why not I say!
We visited this place numerous times but none was more enjoyable than our last night in Lincoln. We stopped by for some amber ales while we waited for our ghost tour to begin. On approaching the bar the publican, with the most ordinary rig in town, asked us if we would like to try his home brew, which he kept out back for 'special cases.' We weren't sure why we were considered a special case but I'll try anything once! Fair dinkum, you could use this stuff to clean submarines. Me and my mate Tiny polished off a half pint of this Soviet rocket fuel. When I went for a piss in the garden out back the grass, unusually, caught fire. Luckily, Tiny was on hand with a Halon bottle. But I digress...
Plenty of seating to be found in this cosy establishment but I would say the quality of cushioning for your blurter is mediocre. With much walking to be done around town this pub could benefit from only the comfiest cushions and stools. Speaking of stools, the Steak and Ale pie I had the night previously forced me to do the 100m dash to Magna Carta's toilets and execute an unfortunate 'liquid sit-down.' Although a disturbing event for me, Magna Carta's toilets were large, roomy and there would even be scope for a cheeky 'Reverse Kanga' if you're that way inclined. 3 ply bum fodder was also available, perfect for fold or scrunch type operators - sensational.
Positioned atop 'steep hill', this pub is ideal for smashing a froth down your turret after burning 1000 calories trying to get there. If you're smart, you'll sink 15 pints of 'Old Speckled Hen' and get your mate to roll you home down the hill - just be careful of the hand rail positioned in the centre of the road, there's a chance you will roll full whack into it, legs akimbo, and damage your mongrel.
Magna Carta - if it's radioactive urine, quality toilet paper and a warm atmosphere you're looking for, you can't go past this absolute ball tearer of a pub!
J. B.
Top notch service as always. Went for lunch with the family had some beautiful steaks and the kids lunch was just as good. Can't say enough good things about the place.
a. l.
Best open mic in England absolute brilliant pub
C. H.
It is what it is: an okay bar in great location. The Hobgoblin was really good though... not sure what they're doing with it, but that was the best tasting pint of Hobbies ever.
R. M.
Seems to be a meeting point for stag and hen parties, but has a good choice of beers and the food is good
S. V. M.
Beautiful scenery, outside Lincoln Cathedral. Was a shame that shortage of staff resulted in food not being offered.
M. F.
After a walk up Steep Hill very welcome, nice staff but not alot of choice due to covid.
B. H.
I love this pub. Friendly bar staff and a fantastic atmosphere.
J.
Good atmosphere the pub itself is situated in nice historic surroundings. Friendly staff & reasonably priced drinks.
P. C.
Love this place great food , good beer , friendly staff. What more do you need looking forward to a return visit next time I'm back in Lincoln
H. S.
great service from Faith and Callum
R. S.
Good for quick drink
D. T.
I like this pub. It is spacious, with a nice view. I went on a Sunday and it was one of the busiest pubs. I will definitely go back
C. E.
Just popped in on the way past for a quick lunch stop! Just what we needed!
E. M.
I have had the pleasure to go there last week with my friends and if I can pick three things that I loved in this place they will be:
1. Food
2. Food
3. Food
Fresh, local 5 star food, obviously prepared by a skilled chef. Will be coming back!
C. M.
We had an excellent meal here today, would definitely recommend
N. D.
Beautiful pub, was given a tour by the landlord. Really friendly and great coffee
J. B.
Slightly pricey but worth it due to the location and friendly staff 👍
M. J.
Good pub in a great location serving good beer. Staff were excellent. I'll try the food next time
T. W.
Very nice place and decent food. Check it out!
C. T.
Good selection of ales, lagers, wines, vintage customer s , entertaining, hospitable, outdoor seating, water for the trusty hounds,
I don't drink that often, but when I do that's a good place for a nice quiet beer as well😱😕🤤😀
D. O.
Good service, drinks reasonably priced. Toilets clean. Food menu looked as if it catered for most people, but not tired
J. D.
Very nice friendly pub, reasonably priced too, no surprise it's busy, great location
S. H.
Lovely place for a friendly drink. The food looked nice to but we didn't eat here this time.
M. H.
All very pleasent.
M. B.
We tried to have a meal here today we finally got our food after waiting 45 minutes all for it to be microwaved and the lasagna was still frozen the waiter apologize perfusly and said he would not be charging us he said he had a stand in chef in for the day wasn't a pleasant experience
D. W.
Friendly atmosphere. Great location. Real ales were good.
T. H.
Decent beers on tap staff are friendly but does need doing up, and mens toilets were leaking in to to pub area from the urinals not good and are proper out of date feels dirty, 👎 is a nice place to sit out could to do with some investment considering it's a tourist pub, can't comment on food as never fancy eating their.
K.
Good selection of drinks at a reasonable price. Close to the cathedral. Very busy atmosphere but obviously a well loved pub!
B. J.
Seems like a tourist trap, since I've found better and cheaper pubs around Lincoln. It's a shame, because the atmosphere and locations are actually great, but the food prices are ridiculous for the portions served there (4 chicken wings for the price I've paid for 10 in other pubs). I guess it's fine if you're going only for a drink or if you're starving and too lazy to walk a few blocks downhill to another pub.
D. R.
Good beer, and there is occasionally live music. The ordering time can be a pain, but it is a normal english pub type experience.
d.
Great place and very covid aware
L. S.
One of the oldest pubs in Lincoln. Situated in a perfect spot on the corner of steep hill on the edge of Castle Square between the Castle and the Cathedral.
I. s. S.

Good pub spot, food isn't too exciting though at these prices. Smallish portions good for a snack, wouldn't recommend for a meal
C. D.
Beautiful spot in Lincoln. Such exquisite historical buildings on a Sunday afternoons noon so busy. Lincoln really beginning to make an impression!

Inoffensive chain pub. The staff are friendly and the pub quiz on a Wednesday evening comes highly recommend. I've yet to try the food.
