Reviews of The Cardinal's Hat
D. M.
Old pub with modern beer from a variety of craft breweries, a great combination. A clear chalkboard menu next the bar clearly displaying the current cask and keg options. Food options sounded nice for sharing but I didn't try any on this visit.
A. H.
This was my 1st visit here, there's quite a few tables inside located in different areas but I ended going upstairs into a very nice lounge area to find a free table, also a few tables located
outside to the front by the entrance for when the weather is nice .The Staff Service at the bar was Welcoming and very Pleasant when ordering our Gin & Tonic drinks & selected food. The table service delivery of our chosen bespoke cheese board was excellent & very informative of the delightful types of cheese & offerings on the board .The drinks were good & the food was very tasty ,a very enjoyable visit all round. From today's experience I will definitely be back again in the future when visiting Lincoln & would also recommend a visit !
T. S.
Popped in for a coffee and apple juice. Staff friendly and good coffee. Only stayed for the one drink. Nice old World decor a proper pub.
J. A.

What a treasure this place is, gorgeous interior, friendly and helpful staff and a fantastic selection of beer.
Loved the cheese and meat board ! Such good value for money , and absolutely delicious- perfect pairing with the lovely beer.

We visited at the turn of June, start of July and we had not visited Lincoln before, but had looked up good ale houses beforehand so were keen to visit the Cardinal's hat, they had some great beers on offer, and also some great ciders, the staff were pleasant, affable and friendly, and we would return for sure if we visit again, all the best to the staff x deb and john from London
D. A.
liked this pub large choice of beer. didn't eat here so couldn't comment about the food staff friendly & helpful.
J. D.
Love this gem. The Cardinal's Hat always has a great selection of local ales and a wide range of wonderful wine and gin. Every visit, the pub has been busy but well-managed. I highly recommend this place for its atmosphere and great service
P. H.
Regular watering hole when in Lincoln, a locals' bar and good atmosphere because of it. Good selection of draught beers, ciders and friendly staff
R. E.
So glad we went in for a drink or two here, what an amazing place!! Friendly staff, Great selection of beers, ciders ect. The decor inside is amazing with plenty of rooms. Really good atmosphere in here and a lovely historical building. Would seriously recommend a visit here if you are in Lincoln.
M. T. F.
We really enjoyed our experience in this pub. We stopped just for a beer while planning where to have our lunch. When we saw the shared plates, we decided to get one. There is a great selection for antipasti from Italy and Spain and nice bread. Great selection of local Ale and cider. Nice place to go when it is not too busy for a relaxed light lunch.
G. S.
Called in for a drink and a bite to eat.
Real ale and craft beer heaven.
We had a mixed meat sharing platter can highly recommend.
S. O.

Oh WOW what a great place to find. The atmosphere is great, the decoration and furniture are great and the place is classy but relaxed.
Good food and drinks and lovely staff.
M. F.
Excellent bar, plenty of real ales available, tables outside, staff came around with free samples of food they were going to put on revised menu, I thought nice touch, proper pub,it's the oldest pub in Lincoln, just down from cathedral, definitely worth a visit.
J. C.
Great pub... had never visited before, but will certainly return.
s.
Dropped in for quick beer, had two, good selection of interesting beers in a nice friendly setting, sensible prices, would recommend and will go again.
E. K.
Great pub, nice atmosphere, with an intellectual touch, as it has big shelves full of books and is frequented by students, professors and artists.
A. M.
Great atmosphere and well kept beer bring this city centre pub close to top marks
a. n.
Best pub in town by far! Great food, great ales on rotation and an awesome vibe
N. D.
Nice beer, nice food. Interesting place. Very historic feel and features.
K. D.
What is not to love about this place? Incredible range of ales and ciders served by friendly, knowledgeable staff who clearly love what they do.
I tried a few beers and found them to very tasty and bit different from the norm.
Once again everyone was very friendly and we had some great conversations with good recommendations of other places to try around Lincoln.
P. H.
This place does the most delicious sharing platters. Well worth visiting if you want a good lunch and a refreshing pint of Cardinals Lager.
Very eclectic and interesting interior and friendly staff, along with the food makes this a must do pit stop for us.
J. A.
Fabulous find. Well worth a visit. Great range of real ales and food looks great, we will definitely have to come back to try the platters. See you soon 😁
R. b.

N. B.
Brilliant, friendly pub with some lovely beers and ciders
M. N. L. D. M.
Good selection of cask and draught beers and ciders.
Staff are very friendly and helpful
P. R.
Decent pub. Sadly only one of about 7 we went in that wouldn't allow dogs in. Did however have a dog water bowel outside and dog could sit out so ok when weatgers decent
L. S.
Lovely historical public house. They have their own house Lager and house Cider as well as a few speciality Ciders. I'm quite partial to the Cardinals House Cider, but have been told must try the chilli and ginger Cider it's very tasty I've been assured. Will have to try a half on my next visit and post a review
D. H.
Lovely pub with great beer and cider. Always packed which tells you all you need to know!
P. O.
Milly the bartender here is fabulous always puts a smile on my face when I come to visit :)
A. B.
Great selection of beers, next level bar snacks (sharing platters are terrific). No meals but that's fine by me. Great service, and a superb location. Would go back.
j. l.
Great beer and the food looks v. good friendly staff.
B. S.
A nice, comfy & convenient pub. Reasonably priced & much choice of drinks!
A. W.
Lovely pub with helpful and friendly staff and a good selection of ales and ciders.

J. B.
Lovely cute pub, great range of drinks and friendly atmosphere
e. w.
Love this pub very relaxing Nd the staff are quick to serve you and very helpful and friendly
D. S.
Great choice of beer that is served well. Staff friendly and even the serious lady behind the bar cracked a smile before we left
P. B.
Lovely pub with lots of character. They sell their own brewed cider, which is a plus for me. Foodwise, great tasting, but do not expect full gourmet meals and instead try their range of ploughmans inspired dishes. Staff were friendly too, and were welcoming, especially as a tourist. They claim to be the oldest Lincoln pub, and one well worth visiting! Cheers!
R. B.
Great sharing platters of continental meats and cheeses. Cosy atmosphere and friendly service
C. S.
What a refreshing surprise! Loads of real ales and staff that know what they are talking about when it comes to ales!
Fantastic!
Big old pub loads of character and lots of little rooms /snugs, even a hidden room apparently?
Went twice on our weekend away and would most definitely be back should we visit again
Highly recommended
S. H.
Great character pub with friendly bar staff.
M. O.
My favourite pub .love this place alot of character bar staff and people really friendly beer superb.love it
B. D.
Great pub half way up the hill towards the Castle and Cathedral with a great range of beets
M. E.
Great drinks selection available, cosy pub
p. r.
Great any age pub, nice selection of beers and a few ciders, basic inside but in a nice way, seating upstairs also, and warm in the winter. Pleasant staff and doorman.
K. G.
popped in on the way to hotel. Really friendly blonde girl behind bar. extremely helpful. I returned later for some food, meat and cheese platter which was excellent. Highly recommended this pub. Felt very comfortable as a solo female traveller.
M. B.
Just dropped in for a beer after walking around the castle. Ok
C. W.
Great little spot in a pretty area. Nice exterior and interior. Staff were very friendly and treated us really well after a mix up with our drinks - not something you can always expect as a student!
NB: Food menu is limited and they do not offer classic pub food or a proper restaurant menu, so don't come here for that.
P. C.
Very welcoming ale House. Fab choice of ale on tap, good wine selection. This place has the largest gin choice too. Also has some smaller rooms off the main bar with comfy seats.
M.
Has to be one of my favourite pubs in Lincoln. Decent selection of drinks with a lovely aesthetic and plenty of comfortable seating. I'd definitely give the platters a go if you get the chance.
N. W.
I've given this 5 stars even though it's not my ideal sort of pub, a bit upmarket and seems to be aimed at a younger generation which is no bad thing, for a pub of this type it was welcoming and the ale was very well kept, will worth popping in to if you're about to take the hike up Steep Hill to the old part of Lincoln
M. M.
Loved the atmosphere service was great and staff were all super nice and friendly
P. B.
Great pub try a pint of crazy goat Cider it's bloody great. Didn't try but from what I saw they have great food the mix meat platter made my mout water.
T. B.
Fantastic pub with a wide selection of craft beers, ciders & wine. Staff are excellent. Always a grown-up crowd, especially compared to nightmare places nearby.
K. B.
Lincoln’s best pub in terms of a friendly welcome, variety of quality beers, value, capacity and location. Simon, Belinda and their team offer the best all round pub experience in the city. Highly recommended!
L. H.
This is my favourite pub in lincoln it's relaxed and unpretentious with a good choice of ales ,ciders and gins all the staff are polite and friendly it's clean and quite quirky with lovely meat and cheese platters
D. C.
Nice cosy areas around this pub, but no food when we turned up. Not sure if they do any anyway. Good meeting place for bottom of the hill location.
R. H.
Really nice location for people watching. Slightly disappointed that I had to wait for 15 minutes before a member of staff could take a drink order but in fairness it was a Friday afternoon. All in all a nice pub
C. B.
Good range of beers. Friendly service in a nice relaxing atmosphere 👍
S. B.
Nice old pub, good service and covid precautions. Platter was good with the right bread to everything else ration. Good suggestion when I asked for a beer recommendation. You can rent the first floor room.
M. B.
A great pub, shame it's not dog friendly, couldn't use this time.
A. G.
Too much cheese to comment on the beer. Would still definitely recommend a visit to this comfy pub.
C. T.
Wonderful pub with a great choice of beers, complimented with good service. An intriguing food offering of cheese and meats, only wished we had the opportunity to try some. They produce a sort of in house newspaper, which fully explains all the beers, wines and spirits available as well as the food. Well worth the visit.
A. H.
If you like a place to drink with history, in the middle of a tourist centre but without outrageous prices this is your place. Try the Cardinals platter (make sure you are hungry as the serve is large for two) and a bottle of lazy bones red to wash it down! Amazing pub, fantastic history and staff to match! Highly recommended!
P. B.
Excellent little pub, great drink selection and friendly staff. Only popped in for one but expect we'll be back!
M. S.
Great choice of craft beers and ciders. Sharing platters are amazing.
M. A.
Called in today for a pint of cask ale and have to say we were not disappointed. Quirky surroundings and clean . I had a pint of Lincoln Gold 4.1ABV and my wife had a prossecco which was well chilled and fizzy for a change . Sadly we were driving so just the one but will return soon
N. S.
Great place good atmosphere great beer
C. T.
Probably my tenth time in the Cardinal; if you wanna hang out and be mellow it's the place to go. It can get a bit hyper downstairs but the upstairs is full of comfy chairs and sofas.
G. M.
Stunning Tudor period building & decent ale selection.
j. b.
Excellent staff. Brilliant restoration back to a pub. Awesome in times where pubs turn into flats or offices for the opposite to occur!!!.great selection of beers and ciders. Nice atmosphere, made to feel very welcome. Long may it go on.
B. P.
The platters may have changed but they are still very good. A great selection of beers, very friendly and helpful service.
a. b.
First visit very busy ,great selection of beers ,will visit again.
J. B.
Always a lovely location for an ale and chat with friends. Great meat / cheese boards too. Worth heading upstairs for the most comfortable seating.
J. P.
An excellent pub in Lincoln where there is a wide choice of beers and ciders and some platters of food to share with family and friends. Highly recommended.
S. B.
Good venue and differing drinks. Decent menu had a sharing platter, nice
J. Y.
Great Beer and selection of Gins..love the continental food platter.
T. B.
Hands down my favourite pub in Lincoln. A great atmosphere, excellent drinks and great location all wrapped up in one of the most beautiful pubs I have ever set foot in
c. j.
Great pub with wide range of ales, gins and ciders, really good atmosphere would highly recommend.
J. G.
Not part of a chain, so don't expect to get your usual here! The beers and lagers are listed on a newspaper themed menu with a brief description of each to help you decide which to try. There is a very limited food menu available but I saw no one eating. Very clean bar area and toilets. Quirky decor inside and standard outside seating. We would definitely return. Staff helpful and efficient.
D. K.
Good selection of beers served well. Staff very friendly and helpful.
S. S.
You can always guarantee a visibly warm welcome from any of the staff on shift. The staff have always greeted each customer with enthusiasm and care.
They have a well designed drinks menu with a range of wines, beers and spirits available, all the usual plus the new and unusual. They have a variety of snacks and sharing platters available, I tend to gravitate towards the bread, olive oil and balsamic as I enjoy their rustic choices of bread.
The upstairs seating area is a charming space that can accommodate large groups of people, but still have more private and quiet corners for individuals and couples. I particularly enjoy the choice of furniture, with squashy sofas, grand high back armchairs to sleek Scandinavian style chairs.
The Hat's atmosphere is lively and comfortable. Downstairs has a more 'pub' feel, with high stools and benches.
With exposed beams and what appears to be original window frames, you could easily believe the Hat to be one of the oldest buildings in Lincoln with all the charm and character that goes with it.
G. W.
Very God pub, first visit but will definitely go again. Lovely seating area upstairs, touch more expensive than the usual pub but we'll worth it.
G. C.
Great choice of drinks knowledgeable and friendly staff, good atmosphere
J. S.
Great beer and fantastic atmosphere, almost like a traditional olde worlde pub.
n. w.
Lovely place to have a drink and a beautiful building
D. P.
Super pub, great selection
W. H.
good selection of ales and ciders, warm and friendly pub, bar staff really know their stuff
M. H.
My friend and I had visited the Cardinal's Hat many years ago and today, when our alternative plans fell through, we drove all the way from Sheffield to Lincoln - specifically to revisit this memorable and fabulous pub.
The interior of the pub is light and friendly, yet affords many corners for privacy and doesn't get too loud. The chsracterful interior and well chosen variety of seating add to the atmosphere, as do the wonderful staff who are warm and helpful.
What we most love about this venue is their 'create your own' cheeseboard. Their generous selection of cheeses to choose from includes many novel and fun varieties, and we thoroughly enjoyed getting acquainted with some new foods.
We also enjoyed the bread with an oil and vinegar dip, and the chorizo bites (pictured).
I'm a whisky guy and they had a great array of single malt scotch from which to choose.
All in all a thoroughly fabulous venue.
R. H.
Love this place. Unique vibe of retro and current. Downstairs can get busy on a weekend but there is a beautiful room upstairs which tends to be quieter. With a range of craft beers and really delicious food, plus wait staff who know the menu backwards, I couldn't recommend this place more.
J. P.
Beautiful place, very helpful staff, and a lovely pint
C. P. O.
A good wide selection of beer, in an antique and beautiful decorations. Fast and efficient service. I highly recommend
B. R.
Good atmosphere and music New Year's Eve, although the drinks were a little pricey (~£17.50 for two double Kraken and Coke). Only stopped in for a quick one but felt very welcome. Staff were doing an excellent job of getting the place in full party swing with a little singing and dancing behind the bar, while maintaining professionalism and speed of service. Would definitely visit again.
S. C.
We loved the varied selection of drinks here and especially the gin menu. Service is friendly and attentive and the staff were more than happy to help us decide from the wide selection of gin (and tonics) available! There's a lovely relaxed vibe here and I love the variety of rooms even though the upstairs was closed on the quiet Sunday night when we visited.
D. S.
Went here for the second time yesterday. Amazing selection of beers and ciders which are cleverly priced based on their strength. The food is stunning- I had the Italian sharing platter which is great value for the portion and quality. Great atmosphere too! I can't recommend this place highly enough!
S. M.
Lovely, authentic and historic pub. Great ale selection as well as an extensive whisky and gin menu styled in to a newspaper format! Great pub!
F. F.
Awesome bar, brilliant selection of spirits, Paul the bouncer was a lad
W.
Awesome selection of beers on tap. It's A great place to meet friends right at the start of Lincoln's Steep Hill.
The staff are great and always happy to help. The food menu is brilliant, even just for a light snack with your pint.
M. F.
Excellent pub, with wide range of drinks, including real ale and gins. The best pub in Lincoln.
A. A.
Cracking real ales from some of the best breweries around
S. R.
A great Lincoln pub with a long history and right for the present. Good, mixed clientele, various spaces to feel pub like or loungey, great beers on tap. And my mum and dad had their first date here, late 50's? ❤
R. P.
Excellent city centre pub. Superb choice of cask ales all in superb condition. Staff very friendly
R. F.
Excellent beer....White Rat !! and good music...Bad Company Led Zep, Toots and Maytells etc. Loved it.
K. M.
Great little pub. Staff very helpfull finding an ale youd like.
K. J.
This is certainly an impressive set up. The building is obviously stunning inside and out, and the extended selection of drinks is fantastic if you want to try a little bit of something new. The food on offer is good but somewhat more restricted, being a charcuterie you'd better like cured meats. Some simpler meals might work nicely with a smaller price tag on them, but you get what you pay for here. The seating is ample even when it's busy, the staff are lovely and the drinks are the main attraction - excellent all round, which obviously means an inflated price but well worth it in my opinion.
P. S.
Lots of character to this pub and great staff too, a must visit place , you will not be disappointed
P. R.
Very good selection and quality of beers. In general nice atmosphere, no loud music and plenty of places to sit. Some quite bright lighting on one of the rooms which can feel a bit harsh. Staff are friendly and helpful. General decor and cleanliness is very good.
M. H.
The Cardinal's hat has pretty much become our go-to pub as the first stop on a night out or when welcoming visitors into Lincoln. It has a good selection of drinks and a constantly changing array of draught ciders and ales. The interior is quirky, slightly rustic yet comfortable.
The food menu is quite limited but I assume that's intentional, "bar food", I guess is the expression. Essentially, the menu is platters of various cheeses and/or meats. However, they are extremely good value for money considering the portion sizes and quality - we've certainly fallen victim to buying more than we needed and struggling to polish it all off!
The only negative is how busy this place can get on a Friday and Saturday evening, but being on The Strait, I guess that's to be expected.
R. T.
A beautiful building that's very well decorated. The drinks are nice but nothing special. The room upstairs is often quieter and ideal for relaxing. This place is very often too full with people which makes it very loud and uncomfortable.
E. N.
Very busy Saturday afternoon, didn't eat this time but had the delicious Citrus draft beer instead of the usual cider.
A. F.
Excellent pub, I always go there. They host all sort of events, including philosophy evenings. Super cozy, they have always a new selection of beers, every week. The personal is very nice.
S. T.
Without doubt the best Ales in town. The platters of food are excellent too. We keep coming back so they must be doing something right!
T. K.
Lovely pub but pricey £11 odd for large v and l and a small wine. A quiet Monday night and rave music playing! Barmaids choice I think, completely out of keeping with the customers who were more 30 -50 year olds.
R. S.
First rate beer selection in this laid back pub in a very historic building. Well run place during Covid restrictions. Good music too.
D. H.
Some great beers/ipas on tap. Lovely atmosphere and a great night. Will be back, many thanks to the lovely staff.
H. G.
In a town that is not short of watering holes, the Cardinal's Hat has come up with something different - a new, very traditional pub. Although it has only been open a little while, it already seems like a "local" that has been there for ever. Great selection of beers, well kept and served properly and a very warm atmosphere.
R. G.
Decent pub with good prices, seemed to be frequented by locals (a good thing) and therefore had a decent atmosphere for a Wednesday evening.
A. S.
It is a beautiful place, the staff are friendly and I love the platters. Wasn't too impressed that when I asked for coke with no ice I was given half a glass (especially for how much it costs) and every time I've been there it always smells like everything was soaked in beer.
G. S.
Good choice of real ales in good condition
A. O.
Lovely ,staff friendly .. definitely will be going back
M. M.
Nice place to go to meet up with friends or a quiet drink out.
Lovely decor and I have brought small dishes there and they are ok. You can get a range of meals.
Staff very pleasant and it in a nice location.

Good selection of beers available, just not for me at the moment...
P. R.
Great atmosphere, come seating upstairs, fantastic selection of beers, ciders etc
S. W.

I. E.
A fantastic, pub, with quirky spaces and a great selection of beer, spirits and cider
J. M.
Fantastic resting place, lovely beer.
Staff were great attentive, knowledgeable and friendly. Would definitely call in again when in lincoln
b. g.
Lincoln's oldest pub, has a hidden room behind a false bookcase. Beer selection and staff are excellent.
C. L.
Delicious lunch of Italian & Spanish meats and cheeses with chutney X quince jelly and pickles with brown ciabatta X delicious and filling . Real ale too X
M. B.
Recently refurbished pub after being closed for many years. Launched as a type of retro space and is very good at what it does. Great seating, beer, food, everything, and the staff are friendly and willing to help. Well worth calling in at any time.
P. B.
Lovely place to eat and drink. Staff were exceptional and so helpful and friendly. Will now make the cardinals hat a regular place to visit
T. M.
Super cosy pub nestled at the bottom of steep hill. Good selection of drinks and helpful staff. Consists of an eccentric number of little rooms to snuggle in and have a few drinks with friends. Superb.
D. H.
Nice ambience, decent ale and good selection
K. R.
Lovely pub, very olde world with comfy chairs and friendly staff.
A. G.
Busy in the main bar but it was a Friday night. Great seating elsewhere upstairs. Very friendly bar staff all made for an enjoyable and relaxed evening with friends. Good beers and ales on offer.
E. S.
Great pub with ales and extensive Gin menu
R. W.
Excellent food, cheap drinks and great aesthetics both inside and out. However the food menu is slightly lacking in variety, what they do offer is fantastic, but I struggled to find any vegan or vegetarian options.
A. P.
Quite busy. Lovely pint of beer.
M.
Great choice of proper ale, great service and fair price. Excellent atmosphere 👌
J. B.
Not a regular in Lincoln by any means, but no trip would be complete without a visit here. Fantastic beer selection, and always kept beautifully. Sharing platters are great as well.
D. W.
Lobely pub, excellent choice of real ales ,wine and shorts in a fab location
N. S.
Always a fab atmosphere and a great selection of drinks on offer. I bring family and friends here often and use it as a meet up place in town on a regular basis. Would recommend!
C. P.
Great place for the beer conocer, real ale pub
D. W.
Staff were helpful and polite. Good selection of beers but on the pricy side.
M. K.
Great friendly pub, good selection ales, cider, gins and other spirits
L. J.
Food was fantastic. Beer fantastic. But we were really cold. Staff (young man with a black beard) didn't really seem to care about the comfort of customers.
M. R.
Best pub in town!
B. b.
Very friendly...good range of real ales...sticking to covid rules so felt very safe. Too late for food but will try next time
S. P.
Excellent pub with good beer and fascinating , quirky decor. 😊
D. P.
Very nice coffee and staff very polite. Hubby enjoyed his pint too
M. C.
If you're over 50 and proudly wear a beard then you'll fit right in. Everyone mainly likes to rub up against each other in the downstairs area, so if you want some space or a tinkle on the old ivorys you should head upstairs.
K. R.
Best bar in Lincoln! Fab range of ciders and beers / reasonably priced / impeccable, friendly service / funky decor / outdoor seating and smoking areas / smaller rooms for more intimate social experiences / often has a good range of funky music although sometimes it swings the other way and plays proper 90s cheese. Upstairs toilets are unisex and get horrifically dirty, although downstairs facilities are single sex and much cleaner (I'm female).
G. R.
Great atmosphere, quirky and cozy. Polite, friendly and helpful service. Huge selection of spirits, beers, lagers and cider from the UK and worldwide.
Highly recommended.
N. A.
Characterful bar with good selection of local ales and craft beers. Variety of different rooms to drink in, including a hidden snug.
D. R.
Wonderful selection of craft and real ale, as well as lagers and ciders to top
S. M.
Nice location , good selection of Beers , quite quaint , decent Menu , staff friendly , Music a bit out there for a Pub , maybe give that a tweak , but on the whole , worth a try ..
K. H.
Nice selection of freehold beers. Good place for a lunchtime pint
J. G.
Excellent ale and friendly bar bar highly recommended
M. R.
Fabulous selection of drinks , meals and nibbles. Great service too . Fantastic all round.😁
m.
