Reviews of Scotch Piper Inn
g. t.
Lovely old pub. Does 3 ales. Shropshire gold was really nice. They're open from 9 and do breakfasts. There is live music on Friday and Saturdays. Allow van stop overs for a tenner. Great place. Recommended 🍻
G. H.
Friendly staff and good spot for quiet grass pitch camping, would recommend for small campers. No disturbance from the indoor entertainment. Views over field and ruined church next door.
M. K.
An absolutely fantastic place, incredibly atmospheric and cuddly. With very nice staff. Now to Guinness only to the Scotch
A. R.
This pub has been pouring pints since 1320!...amazing place, so atmospheric 😊
d. l.
I first visited this traditional 14th century pub in the '60s and am pleased to say it has not changed since then except for additional seating. Totally unspoilt and lovely staff. Enjoy a tasty pie and pint in front of a warm fire in this timeless ale house. Brilliant.
C. C.
We love this place. It's so friendly l, the drinks selection is great and we are particularly loving stopping here on the way back from mass on a Sunday where we can relax in a cosy setting with a coffee and a bacon butty. Brilliant idea and fills a market that has been open since the farm shop cafe has been closed.
R. S.
Team Toxic, Neapolitan Ice-cream Stout is a great substitute for Plumb Porter.
Great dog friendly pub
L. B.
Called in for breakfast, bacon and egg bap with coffee and it was so yummy. Nice and fresh with quality ingredients. Pub is so lovely, quaint, authentic and staff are so welcoming. What more do you want.
C. F.
This is one of my favourite pubs in the world. To go inside and have a drink is close to stepping back in a time machine and entering the 14th century (I believe when the inn was built). Its retained its authenticity and originality and this can be seen in its architectural style, heavy wooden beams, thatched roof and low ceilings/doorways. If the walls could talk they would have near 6-700 years of history and tales. I love having an ale in here and sitting amidst the still and timeless atmosphere. If youre with a small group you'll notice how quiet it is inside. Decor and seating suits the style and is cosy, reminding me of pubs of old. They have a small selection of beer and ale which is enough for me. I didn't try the food although they offered that too. On a Wednesday night there is a biker social gathering meaning its a bit busier but still welcoming and not too long a wait to be served. The staff were friendly, helpful and attentive. I'd recommend this place to anyone interested in history even if just to have a look around.
R. L.
What a work of art this very old pub is. Good real ales and good snack food, pies etc. Has a small car park. Friendly staff. Its also in the camra guide, say no more !!!
M. H.
Great old pub with great atmosphere inside and out, plenty of choice in real ales and a great pint of San Miguel too , staff really friendly who look after the bar area and even deliver your drink to your table , some food available as well from pies to cheeseboards and filled barm cakes ,breakfast bars too if you get there early enough, we frequently visit this great pub and I think it's by far the best around .
H. T.
Lovely pub , really atmospheric!
live music and great staff and even do breakfast butties ! Great for dogs and has a lovely little camping field at the back 😄
A. P.
Total character place with real fire type atmosphere. Cosy atmosphere especially when the guitarist is getting the singing going. Decent prices and excellent servjce
P. R.
You just have to travel here for a pint or two. Great spot, great beers, great history and plenty of room in the beer garden coming into summer
J. D.
Well worth visiting this Historic Pub for the building but, the added bonus of the real ales makes it a must visit! Friendly staff but, apart from crisps and other similar snacks, food isn't available. If you enjoy darts the low ceiling will challenge some. We'll be visiting again in the not to distant future.
M. H. (.
I attended a bike show here and was a great venue beer was good and location great, plenty of parking, but wheelchair access not good for manual or electric wheelchairs so help was needed, however as this was an outside event the access didn’t matter, as drinks were supplied outside
G. T.
Crowded historical pub. I'd like to go at a quiet time to have a better look. It was here in 1320 supposedly serving ale then. Six years after Edward II's defeat at Banockburn, did they use the name Scotch Piper at that time?
A. M.
One of the oldest pubs in the Liverpool area if not the country.
Really nice pint of Guinness.
Welcoming friendly staff.
Great spot for bikers on a Wednesday.
Good food too, had a nice chicken and mushroom pie today.
Indoor or outdoor seating under cover.
Nice garden outdoor the rear.
Cheers
S. W.

J. M.
Great place. Outside seating perfect for nice sunny afternoon..
b. a.
A very pleasant Monday evening at the Scotch Piper car meet
J. R.
Amazingly historic and quaint little pub! Love going here is only walking distance from my house. Service is friendly and love the live music night, musicians who have not even met each other before collaborating perfectly!
Real sense of family here. This is something that is often lost when chains take pubs over! Glad the Scotch Piper is still local!
If you go in winter they even light the open fire!
B. S.
Lovely pub with a great atmosphere and welcoming hosts.
K. D.
Lovely homely pub, with very accommodating staff. I have never been disappointed with the selection of ales on offer (try the Plum Porter if you get a chance - dark and tasty).
Plenty of seating space outside to relax and enjoy a refreshing drink on a warm summer's day. Very highly recommended.
A. W.
The best night in the Scotch Piper tonight with a good old fashioned singalong to boot.
C. N.
Beautiful old thatched roof pub, carefully preserved. Camping field at rear
D. t. R. !.
Oh what a superb place , great atmosphere, warm and welcoming, the staff are so friendly with waitress service as well ! Just a great place to relax , have a good chat with people, have a few beers , a bite to eat great stuff 👍

Great bar. Friendly staff and customers. Very warm welcome, would recommend to all my friends 😎
A. T.
Nice pub, huge garden area. Table service, good beer, nice weather. Shame the bus didn't turn up - could have had another pint!
C. F.
A real historical gem. The lady that runs the pub is doing a fantastic job. The cheese and pie menu great for afternoon snacks.
F. J.
Luv the place. Great on a Sunday afternoon for the food bar, the special atmosphere, the lovely views, good beer and the wonderful building.
A. T.
Reasonable price for the ale if you've never been there it's worth the trip
J. S.
Fantastic pub staff made you feel very welcome. Prices are good and also the beef jerky is delicous.
e.
Fantastic pub, centuries of history. Staff very friendly, great selection of cask ales and spirits. Highly recommend a visit.

Great Old Peculiar beer on draught. Big space at the back for motorhomes. Bus to Southport or Liverpool. Friendly owners.
S.
Love this pub best in the northwest 👍
C. B.
Very nice and staff very friendly, will definitely be going back
W. T.
Bang on biker friendly pub, big turn out most Wednesdays, proper friendly staff, nice and decently priced drinks with some decent food served too.
G. D.
A fantastic, friendly, beautiful pub. If I lived closer I would make it my local.
They have a motorcycle meeting on Wednesday evenings. Great to see the pub open again. The covid safeguarding in place is good. As ever the staff are lovely and friendly and make you feel welcome.
Thanks to all at the Scitch Piper.
Geoff, FJ 1200 rider.
J. C.
Fantastic put to sit outside and have a Guinness
A. B.
Awesome Monday evening, definately worth a visit.
P. L.
Lovely afternoon.
We stopped in to have a drink having just been to church. Three pints later and sat next to the roaring fire I didn't want to leave. It was like being transported to a quaint village pub in the lake district.
Can't believe we live less than half a mile a way and never spent an afternoon here.
Locals were friendly and the history of the pub is amazing.
I strongly suggest you stop by and view the history and hospitally this little jewel has to offer.
P. S.
Great ales and funky rooms lovely log fire.
S. D.
Worth a visit for a pint or two. Lovely historic pub/inn c1320. Very small bar with 3 cosy rooms. Log fire/heater near bar adds to ambience. Lots of outdoor seating for sunny days. Quirky outdoor toilets.
P. O.
Lovely little pub , very friendly staff
Definitely go again .
P. J.
Brilliant old thatched roof pub quirky peaceful tranquil Wednesday is bike night outside undercover seating food and hot drinks available highly recommend
J. S.
As Chalie and Fred would have said:
" It's CHAMPION".
Excellent pint of beer. Good to see The Thatch back as the Prime pub in Lydiate.
S. L.
I visited on a Friday evening when there was live music. The pub wasn't packed (which I see as a positive) but there was a great atmosphere. I liked that it was still a pub (which sold reasonably sized snacks) and not an informal restaurant with a small bar area.
M. H.
We try to visit once a week and it's probably my favourite pub in the area. A nice country pub, well worth the trip out on the bus from Southport. Oh, and Rosie likes it as well because, as an elderly dog, she's made welcome as well.
D. S.
Great place gd atmosphere very friendly
T. P.
Great pub - always a friendly welcome- great beer and great service. Really well ran - Mike remembered my name and the last time we were in! No tv's on the wall means people chat to each other. Regular music.
B. H.
Great traditional thatched pub with plenty of outdoor space to drink, camping area to rear.
M. W.
O.P on tap, excellent hospitality, good car park. A bikers pub.
D. B.
This is a very old fashioned pub that has kept its age very well. Inside it look like it might have looked 400 years ago, except for the slightly modern furniture. This is a premises with a traditional thatched roof. It actually looks like it hasn’t changed for years, if at all. It’s appears to be s haunt of Motor cyclists and old car enthusiasts. The pub has an old feel to it and you can imagine how many people have visited the place over the past few centuries. You can enjoy a number of traditional beers on sale at what might be one of the smallest bars around.
The Scotch Piper is well worth s visit if you get a chance.
A. H.
Such a lovely little pub , very welcoming, and warm staff very nice .
D. H.
One of the oldest pubs in the country, certainly county.Still very much a local, with multi- rooms . Real fire, small bar to the left. With great character, it's unusual by way of it's history, and not to be missed if in the area.
D. F.
Been going to the Scotch Piper for many, many years. New owners have made the Scotch even better. The landlord and landlady are welcoming and chatty, with helpful staff. They have a really good new draught bitter named after the pub. It's a characterful thatched country pub with tons of history. I try to get there each week when I can. I have a mixed bag of reviews you can check out, but a recent 1 star review given here can easily be disregarded as bitter bile posted by a hater with a history of overwhelmingly nasty 1 star reviews. If I lived closer to the Scotch I'd be there a lot more. Keep up the good work. Cheers!
R. F.
This pub is an absolute diamond of a place. It is one of the oldest in the country having been in this wonderful part of Merseyside tucked away in the countryside. Famously known in this area for the regular pub of the many bikers I would recommend anyone to pay visit to this historic pub.
T. P.
Quaint thatched country Inn. Outside space has been recently improved with new benches and additional space. Table service with good beers. Well worth a visit
C. C.
Great location, great venue, very professional staff 👌bike meetings on Wednesday and Sunday
J. D.
The best pub in the world! I absolutely love it here and we now have our meetings here so if the manager sees this be sure to say hi next time we're in!
j. m.
Was buzzing because Ian Callaghan was there , but was disappointed that we were sat there for 40 minutes waiting to be served and had to leave without a drink . great to see so many bikers there . Hopefully next visit will be better
P. M.
Moved to the area & found this little gem. Oldest pub in Merseyside & Lancashire. Staff are lovely, good selection of drinks & snacks & log fire - Plus dog friendly. All boxes ticked & would recommend
T. M.
Good pub with nice beer and friendly staff, definitely go again
D. O.
This pub can be almost dead, to bursting at the seams! So, as I'm not a regular, it's always a surprise as to what sort of atmosphere there'll be.
It doesn't seem to attract "undesirables" and under the current management, there isn't as much "cliquey" behaviour from regulars as there used to be. No jukebox but a very enthusiastic solo acoustic guitarist (who was going down a storm with the regulars) got so loud towards the end of the evening it was almost impossible to have a conversation, even though not in the same room!
Overall, a very friendly and convivial atmosphere and it's well worth a visit.
L. B.
Went with a friend on a Wednesday which is popular with bikers. I'm not a biker , but I had a great time. They serve food and a lovely pint. There was a guy singing in the bar. All in all a great night.
P. G.
Nice pint of plum porter 👍
M. B.

Wow !!! What a difference in the atmosphere on Sunday. It was brilliant to see a lot of the old crew coming back. Lovely to see Rachel again after all this time.
Total thumbs up to the new owners. Will be back next Sunday to meet up with Fred, Shelly, Phil and Rachel.

l. b.
Boss little pub, attend here most Wednesdays for the bike night.
D. O.
A small olde world pub with a friendly convivial atmosphere. There's a cosy real hearth fire in the cold weather.
It has three small rooms to the front and a further rear room that was previously part of the landlords private quarters. There's no room for inside toilets so these are located in an outbuilding. Part of the charm!
No jukebox, slot machines or pool table but there's a dartboard in the middle room - if it's not being used for a sing song!
The interior may be small but there's plenty of outside seating for the warmer weather. There's also space to park the car.
Definately worth a visit!
M. F.
Proper old fashioned pub with a homely feel. Pleasant staff, currently offering table service too. We'll worth a visit
D. E.
lovely old pub full of character
A. R.
Cracking olde wolde pub.
Nice to sit out at the back in the sun.
Serves Plum Porter as well 🍺👍
D. J.
Lovely small Inn very friendly staff
M. M.
For lovers of traditional pubs in a traditional setting, this is a visit you must make. Reputedly almost 300 years old now, this cottage style inn has a thatched roof, and a low-ceilinged interior. Redolent of a slight damp aroma, but that fades as you enter. Tiny bar to the left doing three cask ales, then several rooms radiate off that. The centre room has a fireplace around which you can sit; a dartboard too. The room beyond is slightly grander and presents you with some history of the place. Frequent bus 300 will get you here from the city. Highly recommended.
M. M.
Love this place staff work really hard to make it a great experience. Although the manageress could benefit from a customer service course not the best to be honest 🙄
B. N.
Good outside seating table service is also available good atmosphere very friendly
S. M.

I believe this is the oldest pub in Lancashire . It's a very cosy pub thatched roof coal fires and hs folk singing on Thursdays. It has free parking. A touch of yesteryear the toilets are outside.
C. H.

Brilliant that's it

I have been calling into this pub for over 50 years! It is the only pub in the area that has not been gentrified due to being a class 2 listed building. The management of this pub has never been better nor has the quality of its beer. You do not fill a local pub every night without a lot of effort and creativity. I walk through an 800 year old graveyard to get to the Scotch Piper.
