Haven't been here for 3-4 years, it is my go to real ale pub in Liverpool. The White Rat didn't disappoint, it was lovely but there were only 3 ales on and the ale board had a list of football matches on it!

Quite honestly the finest pint of Guinness in Liverpool. If you've never experienced a perfect human moment before then you should visit the Dispensary because they've got it on tap. If there's ever a literary biography of my life, which I can't imagine there would be, I would like this pint of Guinness to be remembered as the most important foundational moment for my future happiness. Well done to all involved.

First time visitor despite having worked Liverpool for years somehow missed on various pub crawls. On this trip possiblity the beer of the afternoon was from the Liverpool Brewing Co on their great range of cask hand pumps. The bar is extensively stocked including craft beers. Very interesting interior, seats outside to watch the world go by! Friendly staff just a great pub!

A great place for real ales. However, be warned - they are rather addictive trying the many varieties they have on offer, and you may end up losing track of time and where you are and before you know it - you will find yourself on a ferry to somewhere, with no idea of how you got there and not wearing any pants. Fun times.

The pub still has it's old style charm inside & has been improved outside by the addition of several picnic style wooden benches. The only downside was the price of the drinks. While it's always been dearer than most pubs, as all "real ale" pubs are, the cost of £9.40 for a lager and a cider, was a little unexpected. My friend also said the old lagers he liked, were no longer there. The two pints were both lovely, as always. I'd still recommend it, but be aware of the cost.

Traditional corner boozer a short walk from the centre. Great beers and excellent service. Covid guidelines adhered to and explained on entry which was good given everywhere has slightly different ways of enforcing them. Picked beers off a menu and ordered at the table. Great for watching footy as well.

I've given the pub 5 stars following my visit yesterday, the staff gave detailed information on entry and in the current climate where the pub trade has been absolutely battered by regulations . Nice beer and good food. When things hopefully get back to pre masks and sanitisers it'll be a more altogether happier experience

Recently changed hands, but still by far the best pint/watering hole in the City. Fantastic new bar staff Mark and Dan, and manager Ste bring a new lease of life to the much loved Dispensary. Expect the same great beer with the addition of hearty bar snacks to suit all tastes and preferences. There are even some new additions that have been greeted with a standing ovation - coats on seats, tasters and the right to buy a soft drink. Long live the Dizzy.

Excellent old fashioned real ale pub. As with all real ale pubs the beer is a little bit dearer than some other pubs, but you get quality beer. Always a great taste, DAB lager and Ansell's cider, lovely cosy atmosphere (even got a coal effect fire which is really popular in the winter) and has a few tables & chairs outside in the summer. Very recommended and the hostess Pauline makes you feel welcome whether a regular or first time visitor.

I've read reviews complaining about the manager and his quirky ways, some of it is true, but don't let the negative reviews put you off, give it a try! you won't get a better pint of real ale in Liverpool than than that served in the dispensary and there is always a good choice of beers on offer. I visit this pub regularly and can highly recommend it.

A pub that seems to have been taken over by someone who like laminating signs telling you what you should and should not do. "no tasters, move away from the bar when served, one seat per person, hang your coats here, etc etc". Quite tiresome, despite the reasonable beers on site.

No-nonsense boozer with nice selection of beers on tap. The landlord seems to get a bit of a bad rep for being a tad miserable, but I think he does a great job of running a nice city-centre hostelry whilst not accepting the patronage of charlatans and chancers, who, for example, may try to get change of a dodgy 20 by asking the young barmaids to open the till. I get it. I’m with the landlord.

Fantastic real ale pub, beers are well kept. The landlord is a bit of a character, but he knows what he's doing. Beers which are normally on are from Rat brewery & Titanic. Don't go in if you're part of a stag party!

I went to this place lots of times in the past and always had a good time. It was one of a few Cains Brewery pubs in the city, which was a fantastic brewer, one of the best. This pub has lots of charm and is full of history. Well worth a visit !

An oasis of real ale on the way up the hill. Always a good choice of exceptionally well kept real ale. Hard to get a seat as it is not the biggest of pubs and is always popular. Last time I went was told they no longer give real ale tasters, which is quite sad.

I wonder how many skips they heard hire to remove all the laminate notices from the previous landlord? Must be a ball of Blu Tack somewhere the size of a spachoppper. :) Anyway, I'm editing my review and adding some stars: I could forgive the signs and general uptightness of the previous landlord but decided to boycott this place after he refused a pregnant friend a glass of water while the rest of us were buying rounds. Naaah, mate... The amosphere is way better now, could possibly become my favourite chilled pub for a pint or two in this end of town. Beer seems just as well kept, the lighting is more sympathetic to the pub (nobody is on the lookout for the many laminated rules being broken, I guess) and it just feels altogether better. Good work!

Basic street corner boozer that began life as the Grapes some time ago. Changed its name under the ownership of Cain's, but after they failed it seems to be free of tie. Great range of cask beers in a somewhat spartan interior. Friendly and informed welcome nonetheless. Recommended.

I always drop by this place when in Liverpool. The beer is absolutely ace and I like the people behind the bar, they create the right vibe for a traditional pub. Go there and you'll have a great time.

I went in with family who were all drinking alcoholic beverages but I wasn't drinking as I was taking antibiotics. The bar staff were really kind and offered me plenty of alternatives but when I said I didn't want a drink, they were happy to have me sitting with my family. They checked if I wanted anything to drink later on.

Scouse was nice, it is a real ale pub. A bottle of heinkein too expensive £3.90 a bottle of normal size lager.

Best real ales in Liverpool and I recommend the white rat. This pub treats it ales properly and regularly cleans its lines, so the ales are spot on. Around 3.30 a pint, But a pint of nectar is worth it. The manager is a bit cranky so be warned, don't ask for a taste. And don't order a half lol. And don't delay ordering a follow up pint for too long lol.

I went to the Dispensary with my brother in law to get our lunchtime medication. It was ever so good. So was the nurse who dispensed our medicine. Not like the Castor oil which a lot of pubs sell. The atmosphere was excellent.
