Reviews of The Volunteer Canteen

Made very welcome 5 adults 2 children one pushchair! The Guinness oh the Guinness! Interior hasn't changed since 1920's! Grade II listed. This pic from 70's.

Perfect pub for a catch up with friends. A good selection of beers, wines and spirits with no music to distract from the atmosphere. Local and staunchly traditional.
S. G.
Probably the best pub ever. Started going there more than 40 years ago. Just moved back to the area and its as good as ever. If you like TV screens and music you're going to be disappointed, it's a proper pub.
C. S.
Exceptionally welcoming team who really know their local gins and their local beers, wish every little welcoming pub I could give as recommendation as this one xxx
P. H.
Great old fashioned pub with nice atmosphere, great selection of beers and dog friendly.
G. G.
An independent freehold pub with a selection of cask conditioned beers. The atmosphere is always convivial with plenty of intelligent conversation to be had. This pub is away from South Road and easily missed. The people for whom this is their local are very lucky.
Quiz night of a Tuesday evening for those who don't do Wednesdays.
A. R.
Good local pub, log burner, warm and cosy not for children. Dogs welcome.
S. M.
Not been here for years, it hasn't changed. Pleasant staff and beer. Dog friendly.

Was here quite a few years ago, had a ball all friendly and pleasant and nice ale

This is a welcoming, local rustic pub with a community atmosphere that serves up some guest beers. Drop in after a walk along the beach!

Fantastic pub. Good beers good service. Traditional and the perfect place for meeting friends
L. R.
A real old fashioned pub with no distracting music, tv or slot machines. Just great beer and conversation. The log burner in the lounge will feel even more inviting this winter.
M. H.
Been drinking 🍸in this pub for 30 years now. Made lots of good long term friends. It's an absolute gem of a pub with great beers wine and shorts and the service is excellent. Long m

I make a point of coming here , when I'm in the area. I first went in about seven years ago , I was showing it by someone while on holiday at Southport. We came down to meet them at Crosby on the train , this is where we ended up!
M. L.
A rare and very enjoyable experience. A Heritage pub of high esteem. Jack the barman was welcoming and helpful. Friendly locals. The area it lies in is worth exploring, and it's coastline is stunning, in good weather.
A. D. H.
An outstanding, dog friendly, heritage pub away from the hustle and bustle of South Road. Four real ales were on offer including the ubiquitous Doom Bar. I elected for Electric Mountain which was a good pint. Well worth a visit if you are in the area.
R. R.
Lovely pub. Staff are amazing and very friendly. Great selection of cask ales too. Very welcoming pub will definitely be going back. My dog loved it too!
S. M.
Finally got to have a drink at "The Volly" after hearing all about it from my grandparents and seeing pictures. Is an amazing pub with so much character and history. Looking forward to bringing my kids here when they are old enough
S. M.
I love the 'Volly'. Traditional pub with lounge bar where after you've ordered your drinks, the barmaid/barman brings it over to your table. There are board games and books, so an interesting place to be. Suits any age, dogs welcome.
A. 1.

The Volunteer Canteen "Very nice Pub" and the local people of all age's are nice too. The beer's are all tasty as i've tried five different beers last night. I also say it's the best Pub at Waterloo!!!
A. T.
Pre war pub. A must go to. Named after the Volunteers that went to War. Like stepping back in time. Wonderful
M. C.
Please realise this is not a restaurant, it is a fabulous real ale pub, which is one of the oldest hostelries in Crosby. The name is steeped in history, ask Google! Fabulous staff, table service and wonderful company.
T. R.
Fantastic!
Very friendly, traditional pub with excellent cask beers.
You even get service at your table.

H. P.
A proper old fashioned pub. Real fire and good ale. Comfy seats, wood and brass. Friendly staff and locals. Perfect for whiling away an afternoon with friends.
A. T.
Without doubt the best pub on the planet. I will be here waiting for it all to blow over. Brexit, zombie apocolypse, whatever. The beer is well looked after, the service excellent, and the music free interior without parallel
T. T.
Used to be a lovely quaint pub with nice warm fire in the winter and good table service, but i feel know its a bit unkempt an a bit rough around the edges Hope it gets back some class because it needs the locals to love it it was a hidden gem !!
C. F.
Great little old fashioned pub ...great selection of real ales and craft gins...relaxed friendly atmosphere..great for locals and tourists alike..bar staff make you feel like you're at home! must visit!

c. h.
This is a cosy friendly pub. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming. The staff will bring your drinks to your table for no extra cost.
P. F.
Didn't realise pubs like this still existed, small, cosy & friendly with great staff!
C. C.
The Volunteer Canteen is a small hidden gem that feels like it's only known to locals. If you're visiting Waterloo for anything and you want to go for a drink here, you won't just stumble upon it, you'll have to follow directions. When you get there, there are two sides to the bar, the lounge which is a bit quieter with some games under the tables to play, and a bar room which is a bit more lively.
M. T.
Lovely bar with friendly staff. They have games and books and happy for you to take a book if you enjoy but if you take one you have to bring one. Dog friendly and human friendly too.
I.

Cracking locals cosy pub with 3 or 4 decent real ales...Just what I needed after driving towards Gladstone docks for the P and O Irish ferry...friendly locals and professional staff in a quiet street 5 mins from the dock!!
M. D.
The BEST pub anywhere. Good selection of ales at a fair price.... And table service with a smile.
C. B.
A proper pub with excellent real Ales, welcoming staff highly recommended
M. H.
Time captulae with the smell of real ale , located among different styles of architecture going back centuries. Mr Ismay owner of the White star line and The Titanic disgraced the family name and met a sad end, he lived around the corner as did the Captain of the Titanic Captain Scott a few doors down and a much smaller house than Ismays. Money ain't everything, honour and valour are a measure of the man.
G. D.
Interesting pub with vintage interior. Had a nice pint of local Real Ale. Not far from the centre but a bit of a "hidden gem".
