Reviews of Charles Holden
C. P.
The Charles Holden is a BEAUTIFUL pub. The staff are all absolutely lovely and you can tell they love working there. The pub is good for families, they even brought colours to the table for my 2 year old. They have a beautiful beer garden adjacent to the Wandle Park, which makes it feel like you're not even in the city! Love it! My favourite pub of all times!
T. T. B.
The food in here was absolutely fantastic, the service was great and the atmosphere was really bubbling. The only downsides are that the app you have to use to order was not particularly user friendly at all, and the patio heaters outside weren't working. The food is definitely a cut above what you would expect in your average pub, fantastic flavours really well executed.
A. W.
Bit of hidden gem a little outside of the bustling areas of tooting and Wimbledon which means you can usually get a reservation. The outdoor area is large and has a great atmosphere for groups with kids and without throughout the year. The roast is the best around (and we have tried most). Prices aren't cheap but in line with other pubs in the area for a better product in our view. Support local! Keep up the good work team!
C. H.
Nice pub for lunch. Good food and friendly service, but I do not understand why some places seem to assume that vegetarians and vegans want much smaller servings.
L. A.
Amazing pub, great service and excellent staff!
My friends & I had a great night in the Charles Holden. Good variety of drinks & food. I unfortunately left my bag there and as I live far away, they kindly agreed to post it back to me (I paid the expenses for the postage of course). However, I am so thankful they were able to do this for me! Look forward to going back already! Thanks again guys!
K. B. L.
Brilliant atmosphere. Cosy, spacious, airy, light, nice soft music. Superb dining area.
What more can there be said?
Staff are superb. Bright and almost ready to be on stage if need be.
Guinness stout loves this place. I was on a nature photo shoot and it was like I was being cheered on during my last week of the 30 Day Nature challenge with the London Wildlife Trust! Breathtaking!
Exterior seating is one of the best I have seen!
Overall airy, spacious and welcoming!
G. L.
Tasty food and good service :-)
A. S.
Great pub cacross the road from Colliers Wood tube station. It's clean and has friendly staff. A definite pick if you want to watch sport, especially any rugby games featuring the Sprinboks.
S. H.
Surprising pud great indoor and outdoor space. Fantastic freshly served dishes in a relatively fast fashion, wasn't waiting ages between courses. Have been twice already lol would certainty return again.
C. B.
Setting in the garden is really nice, easy to order on the app and the timings aren't bad at all. Staff were also very nice! Only downside is the price, its expensive! Central central London prices, especially for food and soft drinks. Bring those prices down just a little and your guys are onto a winner!
I. F.
Just started visiting this pub. I live in Wimbledon and now travel here. The outside space beats anywhere in Wimbledon and the food is great. Just had pesto pasta - agree with other reviews not cheap but very good, perfectly cooked with fresh ingredients. The combination of setting and food makes it worth it. Great place.

Everything was good from my experience!
Bar staff: friendly, helpful, even put my phone on charge!
Music: good mix, noted foo fighters and red hot chili peppers
Food: uhhh the Angus burger was DELICIOUS! I'd take my hat off to the kitchen staff if I was wearing one.
SKIN ON CHIPS!!! Cooked to perfection uhhhhh
Coleslaw was next level, never had anything like it
Big thick perfectly cooked burger with a tasty cheese sauce and flavour complimenting fillings that I usually wouldn't like, topped off with potato bun which was uncanny.
I haven't tried anything else and I'd be totally happy if the just did the Angus burger that I had because it was flawless, good portion too.
S. H.
Very good food at reasonable prices. Great real ales. Excellent service.
R. F.
Fairly standard pub.
Didn't get to see it at it's best given they're only just opening back up after lockdown.
Beer was good, food was acceptable and service was pleasant without being overly attentive. Look forward to going back when things are more normal to give it a proper review
Z. S.
Great local pub right outside the Colliers Wood tube station.
It's a great place to go if you want to meet up with members of another household. They have a setup in the garden so you can meet with 6 people from 2 different households at a time.
Good selection of drinks and the Sunday roast is FANTASTIC!
The garden allows dogs and children so it's a great family atmosphere.
Table service is quick and the bathrooms are always clean. Staff are always friendly as well.
G. N.
The menu doesn't have too many food options but the food seems decent. More stuff for children would be nice too. Good atmosphere!
G. B.
Great beer and food. Could do with additional staff
C. B.
Really nice pub. Good atmosphere.
G. S.
Nice pub, first ever visit. Amazingly good fish and chips. Batter was perfect and fish was spot on.
J. L.
Excellent pub. The food was delicious (we ordered fish and chips) and the selection of ales was good. On top of that there were great live music. I'll be back someday.
L. C.
This is a great family friendly pub! My friends and I have been there with our babies weekly over the last few months and have always had a great experience. They have a lovely heated gazebo with artificial grass, which is ideal for us to let the babies sit and play on. Orders on the app are super speedy and all the staff are lovely. The place is huge, with plenty of different areas to sit inside and out (esp those who dont want to have to put up with other people's offspring!) The clientele are all generally friendly folk too, which no doubt is down to the relaxed atmosphere and great customer experience.
M.
Nice and cosy pub with lots of drinking options, a good selection of ales to choose from and the food was gorgeous!
M. B.
Delicious food and, as always, friendly and very welcoming staff, even though they were very busy
N. K.
Very attentive staff. A great landlord. A wonderful atmosphere. The place is also family friendly and serves delicious food. What more could you ask for ?
E. H.
We had our wedding reception in the garden of the Charles Holden, after the government changed their rules. Phil, the manager, was extremely helpful and accommodating, we planned and sorted it in less than 2 weeks. The food was delicious, service was very attentive and the garden is lovely. Phil/the staff really could not have done more for us. We would HIGHLY recommend this pub - just for a lovely meal (or your wedding!):
A. B.
It has changed so much, from back in the days when it was the Victory, £19 for a roast dinner,& £7 for a pint, things sure have changed!!
L. “. D. C.
Lovely local pub. Great beer garden
A. M.
Great service, excellent food and friendly stuff! Highly recommended
N. P.
Good roast! Great selection of drinks and nice staff!
T. W.
This pub is a lovely little local spot with a great vibe. As the staff deal with COVID and the new restrictions, they do their best to give us good service. The service is a little slow and that could be improved but the outside seating when the sun is out helps to pass the time between drinks. Will be back!
E. F.
This was my 2nd Eat Out to Help Out meal this week, I wanted a burger this evening so opted for a pub meal, The Charles Holden is right opposite Colliers Wood tube station so very conveniently located. I walked in and the inside part of the pub was empty - I walked past the sign that said wait here to be seated and a barmaid said in a very curt voice go back to the sign and wait to be seated! I was taken to an outside table and told that I could only order drinks and food via their app. I have to admit that this was fairly difficult because the app just wasn't very good. I wasn't able to order the actual drink combination I wanted but after 3 or 4 attempts managed to get to the payment screen and placed the order which was a summer salad (£5.95) an Angus Beef burger in a brioche (£12.95) and a pint of lemonade (£3.20). with the maximum discount £10 deducted from the bill. I have to say the outdoor seating wasn't very comfortable and I think they could improve that fairly easily. The summer salad was okay but it needed more dressing, it was well presented and the taste was fine but quite dry. I was given a tiny amount of tomato ketchup with the burger, certainly not enough and it really needed to come with some kind of sauce, again it was fairly dry but the burger itself was okay. Overall I think it was an okay experience, longish wait between starter and main but it was quite busy. I think that if I paid the full amount I might have been a little miffed, but worth giving it another go sometime.
F. E.
Very nice back garden, with a smoking area, lots of space and screens to watch the football. Lots of tables, good selection of beers and decent food, a bit pricey but overall really nice place
A. V. B.
Good food and service. Great selection of wine. Our main issue was that the tables were not spaced far enough from each other to keep socially distanced (table 35). Would still recommend this pub.
D. W. (.
I thought it was a decent pub with a decent garden.
M. K.
Great pub. Nice food. Friendly staff. Slightly disappointed by the speed of service for food. Chips cold are not chips, but Covid outdoor rules are hard to live up to.
R. H.
Excellent staff, good selection of beers and excellent food.
A. S.
Really excellent food. Fantastic atmosphere. Love it.
D. C.
The pub is currently closed (Feb 2021), but a street food company called Up In My Grill is serving steaks, burgers and more out of the kitchen in the garden for takeaway.
I went yesterday and the steak was excellent!
R. D.
It serves brilliant food. Not cheap but definitely good. A local country pub atmosphere contributes to the experience, despite being situated on one of the busiest of London roads. Well worth a visit especially for a Sunday roast.
D. b.
Nice pub, very relaxed. Don't show football, but their food is very tasty and to a high standard.
R. H.
Great place my diverse group of friends, both male and female, ages ranging from early thirties through forties we skip the fifties and into our late sixties and one who is pushing on towards eighty meet up once a week. Very friendly and comfortable great pub garden. Like all pubs in this area a bit pricey. Overall nicest pub in the district.
L. G.
Great pub, nice atmosphere, lovely garden. Very friendly staff (especially when you lock yourself out your house with no wallet and are in desperate need of a phone charger! Life savers!).
e. s.
The hostess was LOVELY. Very accommodating. Even when our time ran out she found spaces for us. Loved. Everyone was nice and service good xx
S. S.
Great pub with a great outside area and tap selection. Made ever greater by legends like Phil fitting our Euros booking in against all odds!
R. N.
This pub is excellent. It's kept it traditional charm, it has several screens for sport, the crowd is good, excellent big beer garden and the food is great. On top of all that all the staff are brilliant, professional and friendly. Easily one of the best pubs in London.
A. C. A.
Amazing place, great food. We loved the atmosphere, and we will definitely come back again. We were happy with the service, specially with the staff member, Dorota.
J. S.
Popped into this pub for Sunday lunch as we were staying nearby and were really impressed with the food. The menu was not extensive, but the food was excellent and really well presented. We would definitely go here again if in the area.
P. E.
All good, food nice and not to busy.
M. L.
A legendary local that never fails to disappoint. We even had our engagement drinks here. Staff are obliging and personable. Food menu is regularly refreshed with new and local specials. They've launched a series of event evenings, and we loved their Gin and Jazz night. We'll be there regularly over the summer.
M. N.
Great pub. Really love what they've done for winter. Nice heated garden that's enclosed. Good selection of beers on tap. Moving in the area soon so will definitely become my local!
c. r.
Always superb. We arrived to a full pub so couldn't find a seat to eat , so we ordered some drinks and went and stood by the window, instantly a member of staff asked us if we were looking for a table we said yes but there was going to be 4 of us eating. This was no problem for them she found us a table straight away, when our guests turned up we ordered 3 different meals and a sharer to start all the food was superb piling hot and delicous would highly recommend this pub and must try there heated outdoor BBQ area next time all in all a very enjoyable night
J. K.
Sunday roast was really tasty and good value for money. Have to be there early, because this place, although massive, fills very quickly with customers. Fantastic selection of drinks. Plenty of seating, inside and out. Huge outside area at the back away from traffic.
Staff is friendly and the manager is around to have a friendly chat with customers.
Worth a visit if you are in the area.
M. T.
lovely garden & outside area to drink in. Resonable prices for drinks
J. D.
Beer selection needs improving. Facilities are good
L. M.
[Covid-19 Specific] There is no table service, you have to use 'GoodEats' to order and pay for the meals, the food are great, as you will sit outside, remember it might get cool during your stay.
C. L.
The food was great, fair prices, live music (probably not everyday, we were there on a Saturday).
K. T.
Excellent food, service and a lovely atmosphere.
M. S.
Awesome pub. Great selection of drinks and super friendly staff. Big outside area which is covered and heated in colder months. Best pub for miles!
M. F.
I am local to this place, the staff was friendly even if they were busy, they are an efficient team with the smile!
They have a great selection of beers and plenty of seats.
The place was nice and clean.
I will definitely be back there!
D. M.
Excelent service. The hamburger Wes delicious but a little expensive.
D. E.
Nice place with a grade-A beer garden that's wonderful in the summer. The staff are lovely and drink selection is good. I am sad that the beer garden is closed after a certain time, because if you want to then continue a conversation, you are confined to the inside which may include some live music.
R. W.
Good old London Pub. Excellent beer garden right next to the park. A stones throw from the station. Enough screens if you want to watch some sport. Sheltered beer garden area if weather not good. Food is stadard London pub food £12-15 ish for a main. Good atmosphere, busy enough for a sat lunch but expect gets rammed in the summer months.
A. B.
Amazing place, good food. What else you need?
Tha large garden space have a really nice atmosphere. A must go place in the summer.
C. A.
A great little pub - that opens up onto a larger garden with lots of seating and wait for it ... an outdoor BBQ area ! Collier Wood's best kept secret! By the way has a large screen for football and rugby matches. Good selection of beers.
H. W.
Very Helpful as I have a walker so they opened up the other door at the front so I could go to the loo. The staff were very friendly and made me at ease. Thank you all.👍
E. C.
Staff very friendly, food was excellent.
l.
Held my Dad's wake here. Food and service was excellent. Choice of locations. We has good weather and were outside, which was great. The buffet menu and sandwiches were a good quality. Staff were attentive and respectful of the occasion.
R. B.
Nice look. Fast service. Good harmony. Good food!
M. F.
Food is very tasty and varies frequently, not a typical pub food. The outside area is very nice. The staff works well and tries to answer to all the clients as soon as possible. The toilets could be cleaned more frequently.
C. M.
Good pub food and a great beer garden on a nice day. Busy on a Sunday for lunch. We tried the black Angus roast, Angus burger, banana cake with chocolate ice cream and eton mess. Only downside was the eton mess had no meringue but the servings were generous for the price.
E. W.
Great food and drink at reasonable prices. They lost a star by being snobbish about football. The only sport they do not show is football. They are a rugby pub in the main so perfect for all you rugby lovers. Large garden out back with BBQs in the summer. A must for those hazy summer evenings!
R. M.
Brilliant service, very well priced high quality food. Great place for lunch!
A. D.
Cosy pub, with a good selection of beers, wine and spirits. There is also a small food menu with some decent options. It is located right on the entrance to the park and has ample outdoors space making it the ideal place for a drink on a hot summer day. As for cold winter nights you will be entertained indoors by their live music acts.
A. C.
Comfortable pub, very bright spacious and usually not crowded. I give it only 3 stars because it is *really* too expensive, at £4 a pint. It is the only thing that prevents me from going there more often when I want to have a beer in a quiet place.
I never tasted the food; it is expensive too but it looks really good.
F. S.
Great pub with indoor and outdoor dining. Sunday roast was excellent!
K. G.
Perfect place for a quick drink but also a longer sitting. The garden area is lovely during warmer days and they also shows sports!! Recommend when in colliers wood
M. L.
Polite, concise staff, speedy service and a pleasant atmosphere for a quiet drink in the early afternoon. Not a fan of the website as a menu but entirely understandable and entirely responsible given the pandemic.
A. W.
I had sausage, mash and garden peas which was very tasty , washed down with a pint of tribute .
However I found the portions very small and for the price quite expensive . I did not expect to pay £4-65 for a pint that would not cost more than £3-50 in Sheffield where I live
S. S.
Warm atmosphere ~ staff were attentive, friendly and efficient. Meals were well priced and the haddock fresh and sided with minted mushy peas. Great evening.
T. l.
Across the street from a tube station makes it easy to get to. Our family had an excellent meal after a couple drinks on the perfect patio. If your traveling to London I would say this is a must.
C. J.
Great atmosphere here and being close to the park, you can keep an eye on the little ones in the park as you enjoy a well earned drink
P. M.
Good spot to meet up. Garden under construction, has a great potential. A bit overpriced and look/decor inside the pub is very soulless. Also needs more spirits option
S. M.
Really lovely beer garden with lots of plants and fairy lights! Good selection of ales. The veggie main was really small though (only half a stuffed aubergine, no potato/ veg/ other sides came with it or were offered).
J. “. R.
For rugby fans and lovers of barbecues this is your place if you're in Colliers Wood but this pub is becoming tired and lack-lustre. Broken furniture and slow staff make an evening out a bit of a chore. Opposite the tube entrance, that the man the pub is named after designed, amongst many more, it's very handy for the pint after work but not much else.
S. V.
Great pub with lots of outside space. Very straight forward system for ordering online and having drinks delivered
R. D.
Friendly barman, warm, clean, nice atmosphere, well maintained & It Didn't smell either. I will be returning. Haven't tried the food. The Holden branded ale (?) Is worth trying.
R. G.
Sunday lunch was OK but not great. We may have been unlucky and got the tail end of a joint but the beef was very well done and quite tough. Sides were good and staff were friendly, though.
J. C.
Decent pub, every time I go there it's packed, nowhere to sit, that's a bit of a bummer but I really like the atmosphere and enjoy going back there. Nice big beer garden, food is good
A. O.
Well if you want class this is a proper rugby pub. Absolutely the best around. Excellent food, proper beer and a good atmoshere. The staff were brilliant.
N. c.
Never had a bad meal here all the times I've stayed in the holiday Inn next door. Nice selection of puddings too and nice range of ale and lager. Definitely recommended. Opposite colliers wood station.
B. B.
Absolutley fantasmagorical pub. Best pub not just in London potentially the southern side of the economical article 50 brexit law... if that makes sense. Did get a little bit annoyed once when a found a clump of poo in my beer however it still tasted nice and only cost £3.23. great success. I would like to thank the colliers wood community and beyond. Go to this pub and you might just see Amber dancing on the table.
S. G.
Friendly and spacious pub with a nice beer garden, not to mention convenient location too, right opposite Colliers Wood station.
We chose to have lunch here based on a positive experience from a friend and in doing so had a pleasant visit ourselves.
D. B.
I had a wonderful lunch at Charles Holden the service was fabulous and the food was excellent I must recomend the chicken burger so good I really didn't mind the price tag that came with it as it's one of the best chicken burgers i have had the only downside to it was there wasn't enough salad or couscous for the price over all delicious food
T. E.
Nice boozer! Had laines Brewery beer on which is excellent. Gets the rugby on as well. Didn't eat there but other people's grub looked good!
S. W.
Great pub great location good atmosphere very observant friendly staff with smiles. Will defo be going back here. I'd like to try some food as the menu sounded great.
T. A.
Nice local gastro pub - handily just round the corner from me! Is a little expensive for what you get (the exact same house white wine can be found at least a couple of £ cheaper a bottle at other london bars - even in way more upmarket places in south Kensington, which gives the impression they're milking it slightly) and the outside space directly out the back is crying out for some heat lamps, better lighting and nicer furniture (although the marquee is a nice new addition you can't smoke inside) . That all said, it does have a lovely laid back and cosy vibe, the guys behind the bar are always very friendly, welcoming and chatty. It really is the nicest place in the immediate area - albeit the only gastro-esque place without going further afield to Tooting or Wimbledon.
A. M.
Really friendly staff and a decent beer & wine selection.
Despite obvious gastropub intent (menu is proud that they grow our own kale, bake their own sourdough, etc.), we found the food to be rather hit-and-miss.
One of our party had a very nice steak pie, but lamb shanks came with a pitiful amount of veg (one small carrot, etc.) and everyone agreed it was crying out for some gravy and a decent helping of mash.
Desserts were mixed too: decent crumble, but the good-looking chocolate tart was rather tasteless and lacked any kind of nice deep chocolate flavour.
J. D.
The barman gave me a free shot because he liked my shirt. I don't think you need to know anymore. 5*. Also great place to watch the Rugby - but mostly free shot
A. M.
Great local pub with large outdoor area. Table service through online app.
L. M. F.
Easily my favourite pub after just a few visits. The staff are really nice, theres a lovely atmosphere and the food is incredible.
S. W. R.
Good food and beer and cider. Thanks!
J. R.
Great atmosphere! Love the outside seating for when it gets a bit warmer. Great fish and chips served quickly.
T. S.
Nice pub, lots of outside seating, new seating has recently been added to the side street leading to the park, which is a nice touch. Slightly on the expensive side for beer, but not too bad given other local prices.
l. f.
This is a really good local pub the food is much tastier than when it was the Colliers tup. I had the sea bass emm emm and now today haddock in batter very good. Nice cosy & bright atmosphere with friendly staff. Plenty of room & seating can spend all evening here an excellent venue to meet friends.
I. M.
Really enjoyable evening. Work's Christmas do; food good, portionsize good, value excellent. Only downer was band member's rudeness as they set up. Minor issue compared to the comments above though.
S. R.
This is both a winter and summer pub. There's a great range of food and drinks along with a beer garden that's actually bigger than the pub itself. A good range of local real ales and great staff. Well worth a visit.
J. Z.
Nice outdoor space, bad service. The food ordering was confusing and not communicated, pay one place, but take order else where. Good beer and a good spot for day drinking if you have time and don't mind the lack of service.
P. M.
Convenient pub for Colliers wood tube. Nice atmosphere. Sports shown on the big screen, pleasant beer garden if you ignore the pylon.
L. M.
Great pub but very expensive gin! I had a double gin and lemonade (lemonade out of a bottle) and it was £9. They were very helpful though and went down into the cellar for the gin I wanted. Thank you!
N. O.
Great pub, especially in the Summer! Food’s really good too if not a tad tight on measures, but then it is a gastro pub.
C. D.
Pasta pesto yummy. The waiters & waitress touch too much the cats and dogs
K. S.
Nice beer garden for a glass of something after walking the dogs in the park next door. Dog friendly bar and staff will provide a small bucket of water for dogs if asked.
H. H.
This place is something else. The employees were very friendly and the food was absolutely delicious. We came here as a family of six and everyone was very happy with their food. I would totally recommend it!
A. G.
Great pub, our go-to local for food and beer
T. M.
I love the food and garden here. It’s. Great summer spot when the sun shines. Service is always fast and friendly too. A top local.
B. V.
Great pub, friendly atmosphere! A large variety of beers on tap, and a pub quiz every Sunday evening (as of Febr. 2020)
A. W.
Great location, great beer garden, food is very serviceable - they don't show football, only rugby. Lose a star as the selection of beer is a little lacklustre.
G. H.
Pretty standard Gastropub with good selection of lagers and trad ales. Could do with some American IPAs on tap to keep up with current tastes. But well worth a visit. Proximity near to Colliers Wood Station makes it great for meeting up with people
L. D. C.
Pretty pub, cosy atmosphere. The garden in the summer is wonderful. Nice selection of beers. Vodka tonic is super!
R. N.
Lovely food, great beer and friendly staff. A massive asset for the neighbourhood. Particularly love the beer garden backing on to the park
D. K.
The Sunday roast is very nice the atmosphere is good the only thing was missing is some good beers they still have too many of the fosters and stella instead of some flavoursome craft lagers. Also not the cheapest around...
D. B. F.
Despite covid rules the staff did an amazing job polite efficient and professional will definitely return as soon as we are allowed
G.
Colliers Wood's best pub. Needs a function room to be totally perfect. I'll reserve the 5/5 review until they get that 🤣
G. H.
I had been meaning to call in here for a long time and finally got the chance last night. Staff were friendly and there was good prompt service and the bar itself seemed to be kept clean and tidy. We only stayed for a few drinks and I have to admit, although the ale tasted like it was kept well, it was on the expensive side, I got a bit of a shock when I got my bill but, in saying that, it has not put me off and we will be back again and more than likely try the food as well.
I. W.
Got to love this pub since moving into the area. Shaky 40th birthday their but ever since it is my goto, for great and inexpensive pub grub, saturday music and sport. Plus a great beer garden.
P. K.
I really like this pub, but had an unfortunate experience with the food lately. We had to wait a very long time for the food to come, and then it had a hair in. Unfortunate because things are usually very nice there.
P. G.
Great place! A pleasant modern pub with lovely food and drinks selection.
M. G.
Nice pub, always very busy. Drinks are quite pricey but nicest pub in the area. Lacking in any craft beers IMO.
T. P.
Great pub, massive garden! The mens toilet stunk but other than that it was a good experience
B. T.
Great Pub. Delicious Sunday Roast. Brilliant for watching the rugby although you probably should book a table.
C. S.
Super friendly pub, fantastic atmosphere, great for watching rugby, and the food is awesome (they even grow some of the veges in their garden!)
R. C.
Not my normal area but definitely a great pub to check out. Big garden, great food (the burger was delicious) and friendly staff.
M. k.
Really great friendly atmosphere. Beautiful outside garden.
J. D.
