Reviews of Dame Alice Owen

Walked in with six friends for a pre theatre meal. We had the most amazing pizzas. It was like being in Italy. One member of our group told us that she doesn't eat pizza! She reluctantly ordered one and she was delightfully surprised. Other pizzas will now be measured the standard at the Dame Alice Owen.
Staff really friendly and helpful 🙂

I stumbled across this wonderful establishment in my short window of exploration when resting before my travels through the Namibian rainforest. This “public house” is second to none. Pints on tap and pizza more succulent than spring rain. I hope to be buried in this pub one day. The man with the Afro behind the bar was quite possible the most charismatic and beautiful human being I have ever met. Get the Turkish pizza and never look back. X

I privately rented Dame Alice Owen for my birthday. It was an amazing night.
The staff were so attentive - they wore pink (the theme was pink), they made personalised 'happy birthday' signs on the blackboards, and they checked in with me several times before the event to ensure everything was on track.
In terms of logistics, they made sure everything was plain sailing - they organised the food (which was delicious), they assisted with delivery/collection of the music speakers, they put my presents in safe storage, and they took down the decorations after the event.
On top of that, the staff were great fun. They got involved in the games (we played Twister) and everyone commented on how nice they were.
The venue is ideal for a birthday party - there is plenty of space, we were allowed to decorate the venue, and the location is ideal. I couldn't recommend the venue higher.
I must give a special shout-out to Charlie, who was absolutely fantastic. He went above and beyond to ensure that the night was perfect.

Walked in off the street with two work colleagues just looking for a pint or two. Was greeted with a friendly welcome and a selection of electronic pumps with the usual suspects, they said they're looking to increase the hand pulled drinks with one ale and one cider currently. We ordered 3 pints of Morretti, we saw that people were ordering pizza and they looked hand made and they smelled fabulous, we couldn't resist. The cost of pizza was around £11. We ordered Prosciutto & fig, my colleagues ordered Turkish Lamb, feta and coriander, and chestnut mushrooms and talaggio cheese. Each one was absolutely cracking. However the stars of the shows were the side plates, Chorizo in red wine was sweet and savoury, the humus and flatbread was light lemony really flavoursome, the patatas bravas were good but the aioli was knock out. Overall we're delighted with this walk in, me and my colleagues will return! Can't wait!

I always get the lunch menu which is £7 for the food, really recommend it the food is amazing and it changes daily, one day having pasta with a venison bolognese sauce to a chorizo, egg, hash brown and all sorts of great things salad. Best place to eat near city university by far.

Lovely pub, friendly welcoming staff and great beer. Can't comment on the food as we were sorry binged in elsewhere, but looked reasonably priced, an intriguing menu and whatever was cooking in the kitchen smelt great 😀

If you want a sound pub with a sound manager and team then you’ve found your spot. Charlie alway has a smile on his wee face

Very nice staff! Great to find tapas like 'bravas' or 'coca d'escalivada'. These are great sharers. Also a good and large selection of draught beer. Finally, the outdoor seating is also really good as there's very few noise and not so many cars driving past the street.

Very pricey but does have a good selection of beers and drinks. Urge them to lower their prices because its not a bad place. I like the atmosphere, its very chilled and easy going. My pint was decent and has quick service. Not sure about the food menu though.

Went here to meet a friend and had the most amazing reasonably priced food, we got 3 of the bar snack dishes to share between us and i was blown away by the quality. We had the chorizo, the asparagus croquets and a cheese board for just £6 each and everything was delicious. I never write reviews but felt I had to on this occasion. Staff really friendly as well, high quality food and service for a low price. Would definitely go again!

We were looking for a place where we could drinks at the same time could sit and have an important official conversation. Also there was a non drinker in the group who needed coffee. Luckily we got everything here. Cozy and spacious, nice location, friendly staff. Nothing to complain and will definitely revisit.

Dear world
Had Sunday lunch here yesterday with my daughters to celebrate one of their birthdays.
I am the most fussy Sunday lunch aficionado and rarely write reviews.
The roast beef here was simply superb.
Everything on the plate was perfect from the delicious beef (rare-ish, tender and succulent) unbeatable Yorkshire’s and even homemade horseradish sauce.
This is my new number one Sunday lunch venue.
Unbeatable
Thank you all

Decent selection of beers. Couldn't find many small plates on the menu. Bought some nibbles and got access to their bread fresh bread and olive oil which they have at the bar. Bonus free munchies! Yay

Have a ribeye sandwich. It's flipping ace

Great food. Good range of veggie stuff. Good range of beers and they serve them properly. If you are passing drop in and try for sure. Outdoor seating handy and trendy minimalist inside.

Completely reborn since the very average days of the Toffeemaker - not only has the layout hugely improved by removing an internal partition, the entire food and drink selection is now up there with the best pubs in London, no exaggeration. A mix of craft and regular beers including Brixton, Sagres and the like, a real focus on good quality wines and independent producers. And the food is simply brilliant - I’ve had three of their £6.50 lunches, all substantial plates and all beautiful. Today had grilled mackerel with salad on toast, one of the best meals I’ve had for a long time. Previously had things like chorizo and bean stew, it’s great value for top cooking at lunch.

Good drink selection. Good decor. Great food. No atmosphere during the day, no music felt awkward talking comfortably in a caverous/echoey place. Would return again though and worth a visit

Love this pub, such a chilled & cosy vibe. Delicious and consistent food. Had a chicken roast here and it was cooked to perfection. Loads of flavour. Try the horseradish sauce..highly recommend

We went after the performance at Sadler's Wells on a Sat night. Thought it would be packed but such a refreshing atmosphere; quiet, relaxed and friendly staff. We loved catching up with each other (without having to shout) in the stylish ambience. Thank you!

Best pub Roast in London! My Husband and I stopped in on our way to the cinema for a roast and was so pleasantly surprised. The roasts are amazing! I got a whole lil chicken and my husbands beef was perfect. The potatos were lovely crispy and my husband loved the creamy home made horse radish. The service was great and they even gave us some focaccia bread to take home. Its a really lovely pub!

A chilled place (formerly the Blacksmith and Toffeemaker) which can get student-heavy (City University is across the street) on weekdays but weekend are quiet and relaxed. Good selection of drinks and fantastic staff!
