Reviews of Forest Tavern
G. D.
Love this place, haven't been in for a while. The decor still looks 'lived in'!
Was a bit worried at first cause I thought they had no hand pump beer...then there on the end of the bar, shining and twinkling was Portobello Star...it was fab, nice and smooth with a lovely bitterness after mmmm! The smell from the kitchen always dominates as the Sunday lunches are being served.
I. L. (. G.
I like the look of this pub, the drinks didn't seem too expensive. However, I did come here for a Sunday roast and granted it was in the evening by the time that I reached it with my friends. I had heard good stuff but the roast tastes like it was under the lights or in a hot box for a long period and the side of stuffing balls that we received was hard as a rock and that is why I have given this place only three stars even though that atmosphere in this pub was nice and chilled.

Great venue! So close to the Train Station, you can come straight off of the train and enjoy a great pint.
Plenty of space too, so impressed with the back area!
M. N.
Tried this pub again after a while away. Usually good but occasionally not so. Went for Sunday roast and all food was excellent. Only one hand pull bitter but very nice. Sauvignon blanc was excellent too. Lovely old pub with high ceilings. Deserves a good review so here it is
W. K.
Lovely local pub, great food and friendly staff. Pints are well poured and a good selection.
E. R.
Great Sunday lunch, good beer and plenty of room for large dogs to lay down 😁
J.
Very nice quiet drink early on a Sunday evening. Two large indoor spaces. Leafy garden. Nice beer with a hint of grapefruit.
M. L.
Another fab meal at the forest tavern. Partner is on a low carb diet for diabetes and their lamb on a bed of beans was delicious. Similarly, hake with olive tapenade - amazing combo, who knew. Good Guinness - they obviously either serve loads or run their taps through regularly. Friendly service.
B. O.
They have a good selection of Beer.s 🍺🍺 also on a normal day they serve food./ Sunday roast. So worth a visit. Friendly staff and popular with the locals.😀😀
C. W.
Overall, a lovely experience. :)
The waiter and waitress that served us were friendly, accommodating and welcoming. The Vegan Sweet potato and Vegetarian Sunday roast that we had were generous in size and deliciously filling, (compliments to the chefs). The chicken wings that my other companion enjoyed were said to be "one of the best" that she had had. The atmosphere and aesthetics of the place was homey and inviting yet still expansive, perfect for social distancing. The COVID guidelines were nicely followed with the waiters and waitresses wearing masks and seating us not too close to other patrons. They also have a back garden that will be tried out on the next visit, weather depending!
I definitely recommend stopping by, if not for a casual meal, definitely for their sunday roast, kind staff and rustic atmosphere!
C. B.
Nice pub with friendly staff and decent wine/beer but the food (roast) wasn’t good unfortunately.
A. C.
We had booked a late afternoon Sunday lunch before travelling back up north. As the weather was getting increasingly worse we went in early. Unfortunately they were fully booked. When we told them why we needed to change the booking they quickly rearranged the reservations in the bar area to make room for us.
A lovely gesture and a lovely Sunday lunch.
Thank you
A. R.
It's a nice pub. The staff is friendly and the garden area is cozy. The area suffers a bit from not being too sophisticated, but it is surely the best option if you are a local. Drink selection is limited. I didn't eat here, but the kitchen looks big and there is quite some kitchen staff, by which I assume there is a good food service.
J. H.
Good beer, nice Yorkshire pudding and well baked pork belly. But also tastes gababe. And re cooked from frozen roast potatoes and other veg.
M. F.
Very friendly and covid compliant service, food I can't fault 1 bit and I'm picky, a good selection of craft beer, shelter and heaters were a massive bonus too. We really enjoyed our visit and we will be back, Ollie the manager was very friendly and made us feel at home.i can't wait to come and try the supper club!
C. S. R.
Food is consistently great and pub is steadily getting busier and more atmospheric
B. K.
Service was immediately kind, warm and welcoming. It’s an easy and relaxed atmosphere inside with a simple but excellent smelling garden area - lavender fills your nostrils with love. The food (we had roasts) was absolutely spot-on! crispy roasties, loads of crackling, variety of well-cooked veggies and plenty of it. Would definitely return and recommend it to all!
M. J.
Lovely heritage style Tavern with specialised selection of draughts and tasty food, attentive service as well. Will be coming back
T. W.
Great tavern. Amazing food at sensible prices. Staff always friendly and amiable. Large garden and seating at front of pub. Great for a meet up with friends or a quick lunchtime drink with colleagues. Gay friendly which is a God send in East London. Amazing bar.
M. T.
We came back for the first time after the new ownership and had a great time.
Positives included the pork belly roast which had loads of different components and was a really good portion size - it was a better roast than Holly Tree IMO. The cider, I forget which it was but not heard of it and it was very good. The service was very friendly and prompt. All in all a great experience and an improvement on previous ownership food (which wasn’t bad). Partner had vegan hot dog which she also enjoyed - big fan of the chips.
Look forward to coming again and trying the full non Sunday menu. 👍👍
J. E.
Delicious eats and quenching drinks. Perfect spot if you're in town.
B. G.
An overall lovely experience at the tavern. The service from the get go was friendly, considerate and welcoming. The atmosphere and the food was generous and ontime.
The family and I definitely recommend stopping by and enjoying a wonderful afternoon or dinner.
B.
The best pub in central Forest Gate. Wide range of lagers, great food.
A. O.
Great service, good food and family friendly
A. B.
Friendly pub, with a heated smokers’ zone and great IPA!
V. P.
Nice pub but it was freezing. Might try it again when the weather warms up.
A. H.
Great location by the Station and the staff friendly and helpful. Not the full 5Stars as the new owners have mostly craft beer which is really good but only a couple real ales.
S. G.
Great atmosphere and lots of spaces to enjoy (beer garden, dining area and pub area).
Gem of the area! 👏
D. C.
It's only been a couple weeks been going but lovely place
R. L.
Excellent beers and delicious Sunday roasts. Great atmosphere and lovely staff, what's not to like!!
T. P.
Friendly staff (service with a smile) great bar snacks and quality pint of draft Red Rye! Much enjoyed...
N. A.
Lovely staff and atmosphere and excellent food.

Great pub. Fantastic location.
T. S.
Great venue, friendly staff for a friend's birthday party.
D. W.
A fine local pub that is nice to visit from time to time. The interior is exactly what you would expect from a British pub and I did like it. The prices were not that low taking into account the location far from the city centre but it was nothing out of ordinary. I didn't try their food while visiting. I wish the music was turned down a little bit so it would be easier to have a longer conversation.

Just got back from the Forest Tavern, really really nice pub and wanted to leave review for anyone that is looking for a friendly pub with fantastic food. First time going there although have walked past it many times (my loss) as it is actually brilliant inside.Really relaxing feeling called five minutes before table was reserved with a lovely lamp and beautiful flower. Allowed me to bring my Chihuahua and eat at the table with her. My partner was very impressed with his beef roast as I was with my chicken. Thank you guys will.definitely be returning!
B. Z.
Good food, friendly staff and also nice garden in the back
N. A.
Lovely staff and atmosphere and excellent food.
O. W.
This is a nice pub. 4 or 5 well kept ales on tap. Good food and nice atmosphere. Decent quiz every Tuesday too. Sunday lunches are decent, and reasonably priced. Staff are usually fast, friendly and knowledgeable. I visit here regularly.
H. R. N.
As a new east Londoner having moved from gastro-a-mile Islington boy was I happy to find this place! Been here several times,
- in the summer with a laptop by myself, great to sit out in the back garden
- with smokers who love the back garden too as its nicer than smoking out front
- with a family with toddlers who totally loved the table football (and who I knew I'd enjoy a round of it with a 4 year old!)
- on quiz night tuesday to while the evening away somewhat productively
Top marks to Forest on all of these occasions really. The food is good, it's a reasonable selection of starters and mains. They have about 8 beers on tap (cask + keg), so generally there's something for every beer taste (there are several microbreweries in the railway arches in Forest Gate for who want a more beer-specific experience, look it up). The beers are local, have always been fresh, and not silly-priced like you get in London Fields or Hackney generally these days.
There are different table arrangements for different moods, which is quite important to me. So: dining-table type seating for bigger groups and for eating, casual pub tables for beer, snacking, and sitting fairly close to your companions, and lounge chairs by the fireplace if you want to sink in for the evening.
Finally, a point about the ethnic mix: there is a mix of people that come in here and I'm very happy about that too. Pubs should reflect the community it serves, is a refrain I've heard in Britain all too often, often an empty one as everyone except the white middle classes then find themselves priced out or otherwise uncomfortable in these spaces. Forest Tavern feels more inclusive than that and I hope it stays that way.
To many more evenings here!
H. S.
Great pub. Wide drinks selection. Reasonably priced. Nice crowd. Big space out the back for events. Food looked legit although didn't eat there myself. Will return 100%
K. d.
Bit gutted about the new chefs decision to not allow dogs in the restaurant. Also not so keen on watching him go for a cigarette and then scratch his nether reasons and not wash his hands before handling food.
I love this pub and it’s the only decent one in our area but for us the recent changes are not great. Such a shame.
P. D.
Wicked pub. Quality well-kept local ales, trendy shabby decor and a friendly crowd. Has a little beer garden that becomes a real sun-trap when it's a nice day out. The food is great - fresh, high quality and well-cooked food from a simple menu. We're regulars here and wouldn't go anywhere else really! The monthly vinyl market on Saturdays gets a cool crowd in from further afield too..
J.
This is my idea of a traditional English pub, a good selection of beers and ales. Traditional wooden decor, a wood burning fire, friendly staff and sensible prices.
There's also a restaurant area serving some very nice food, and a garden at the back where you can enjoy your pint when the sun is shining.
S. G.
This is a lovely pub with great food, but I was disappointed that there was no veggie roast left by 3pm on a Sunday (second time I have come here specifically for a roast and this has happened). Had to come up with an alternative option myself (substitute the veg wellington for halloumi fries). Once the manager was aware of the issue, she handled it excellently - gave me a reduced price and was very apologetic. However, the bar staff all seemed a bit at sea with customer service - a simple “I’m really sorry, let me see if there’s anything I can do” would have been great instead of acting embarrassed that they’d ran out and then me having to go away and think of a suitable option myself. I also saw bar staff serve the wrong type of wine to a customer (easy mistake, no big deal) but it seemed to really throw her and she got defensive with the customer instead of just apologising and fixing it. Maybe some customer service training needed for more junior members of staff?
A. R.
Only a short visit but welcomed by the smell of a proper wood burning fire which was lovely. Drinks reasonably priced and food looked good. Also looked like a very family friendly pub so hope to visit again soon!
M. R.
Back in the early noughties I used to run home from Forest Gate Community school to avoid being robbed, now I'm drinking craft beer in a pub next door to the school whilst rubbing shoulders with people who genuinely believe that they're artists and musicians, although to be fair, I have lived in Kent for 9 years.
Oh yeah, pub had good booze and food and very friendly atmosphere. Would definitely brave the hipsters to drink here again.
E. B.
Great food and ales, COVID-safe outside covered area (with heaters near each table), and very friendly staff. Recommend
g. w.
The Forest Tavern is a community based pub that delivers local activities, great beer and a friendly atmosphere. The nature of the will depend on the manager as I have experienced varying degrees of service and welcome dependant on the style of the manager. However overall a great place to visit with a great kitchen, great beer and good local activities.
P. W.
I bought 2 take away Sunday lunches yesterday and they were fantastic. I was very impressed with the quality and so was my partner. We will definately be back for another take away soon 👍👍
S. I.
This place screams hipster. From the exposed wood joists, violin bows on walls, mis matched plates and saucers to the organic fair trade all natural foods.
The food was fantastic! The pork sausage was juicy and flavorful.
The staff was very friendly and courteous.
Prices were between 7-14$ for mains.
Worth checking out.
T. S.
Delicious roast dinner and friendly staff
L. G.
Nice place, nice food, avoid at all costs at just after school is out time and Saturday and Sunday afternoons
Awkward moments with separated parents handing over the precious little ones.
Lots of "poppet this, and poppet that".
Nice that peopke can take their dog inside, hillarious when they go for the staff and eachother.
M. P.
Here i feel like I'm home every time i come.. 😁 lovely atmostphere , nice polite awesome working staff by the bar and in the kitchen. They cook and serve deli meals .. They treat every customer nice (different then Hudson bay )
W. A.
Sunday lunch here was fine. Staff all were attentive and efficient. Food was tasty and plentiful. Sensible prices, decent wine list
A. C.
It's stepped back up! It went seriously downhill, menu was boring, and the food was horrid. I simply stopped going there for ages. Gave it another chance, and it looks like they've fixed the problem with a new chef (confirmed by the staff). Size is a *tiny* smaller.. but quality is *way* better.
D. B.
Very well run pub: always great staff, always well kept beer on tap and always great food. They've often got DJs playing too, even just on a Sunday keeping the relaxed vibe going. Love it.
A. W.
The best place in Forest Gate. Lovley staff, very clean and great atmosphere of old British pub!
V. H.
Really enjoyable place to watch the footy. Wholesome food at good prices and friendly staff
C. H.
Vintage decor, traditional gastropub. Very relaxing, cozy atmosphere, real burning fire, hot mulled wine and gluten free beers. Very nice well maintained garden with flowers and plants, like a little heaven in urban jungle of busy Forest Gate area. It gets busy there though in a nice sunny day. But plenty of outdoor and indoor seating. Food is good. Drinks are good. Popular with locals. Sunday roast.
Separate and well presented dining area/ restaurant. Popular with locals, couples and families. Some games. Some small snacks at the bar. Outdoor seating.
Well located just opposite Forest Gate station near busy High Street.
P. H.
Very nice pub with a beer garden to sit outside when the weather is nice. Good food and drink selection in a proper pub environment. They also have live music and other events there quite often. Food quality is good, I had a tasty burger.
J. B.
If you're familiar with Antic pubs this will be familiar ground. A much-prized local pub in Forest Gate with decent rotating beer and ale selection with dining area in the back. The fireplace is the place to be in winter time if you can get a space on the Chesterfield!
K. W.
Good fun, they were celebrating Pride. There is much beyond the main room, there is a bigger dance floor behind the bar and a decent sized garden, where you can still hear the music but it does close (the garden) at 11.
G. H.
The Forest Tavern is the perfect representation of the hipster gentrification that is reviving/ruining (depending on your point of view) East London. The food & drink are good, but over priced. The tables, chairs & decorations are cheap & mismatched, but apparently that's popular with bearded 20 somethings.
Overall, the Forest Tavern is just ok. Unless you love identikit hipster chic, in which case it's probably great.
M. S.
Awesome burger!
Awesome staff, great atmosphere!
K. O.
Amazing staff, great variety of excellent beer, an excellent Sunday roast but definitely try their bar snacks. A proper neighbourhood pub.
K. A.
Everything was great: staff, nice garden, beer and food( smoked salmon and squid)
A. W.
The pub has changed hands and it is now called the Forest Tavern, think it's run by the Antic chain that run the White Hart in Stoke Newington and the Red Lion in Leytonstone. Very friendly and welcoming staff and a lovely selection of real ales. Went to comedy night recently and came back to the restaurant for a family meal, very impressed. Very child and dog friendly, a great pub! It's opposite CoffeE7, the independent vegetarian cafe, which is well worth visiting too.
M. W.
Lovely Sunday roast! Food was out quickly and we didn't have to wait long for a table.
Suggest you book if you can't be flexible with time
N. W.
Just had the modules frites by recommendation of Ian who really makes this place!
Im sure the sticky ginger cake will be awsome. We have enjoyed our meal and hope management appreciate such a strong member of staff x
A. D.
This is a very nice pub with great food. The back garden is excellent. You would never know that you are in East London. Great vibes
K. “. G. G.
Went to this pub for my friends 40th, we drank, ate and then it was time to party at the pride disco! What touch!
S. J.
Praise be for the Forest Tavern. Would be a great pub in any part of town, but in Forest Gate it's a glorious lone star. Food is great, selection of craft beers is great, vinyl market once a month is great.
к. к.
Delicious food, great atmosphere, nice staff. Like be here at summer because have garden so you can enjoy time and weather with friends.
D. R.
Its very chilled out. Pricy but the staff are friendly and they have decent food.
d.
We had my uncle's wake here after his funeral .. the setting was nice enough but the staff at the bar were quite disorganised and considering the pub was closed because of the wake it shouldnt of been such a chore to get a HOT tea and coffee not a cold one .. there was a couple of ripped chairs but it is the West end so we expected it to be a little rough and ready and the chairs added to the London feel.
There is NO parking facilities on site but there is space out the back by their gate for one car as a disabled space .. if they aren't using it themselves of course ..
All in all it was a nice afternoon but because of what we was at the venue for it should of been easier and more organised as the day was stressful enough.
A. L.
Still by far the best boozer in FG and much of the menu is great, as is the booze, service and general ambience. However, the Sunday roasts have changed and unfortunately not for the better.
M. F.
Good beer, food and service. Local jam nights and other stuff make for a good atmosphere. Cool interior and large garden at the back too!
J. G.
I love this pub great food great beer and friendly staff. Always something different. Dogs kids and everyone in between feel comfortable and welcome
M. C.

D. A.
Our favourite local. Good beers, friendly staff, nice rotating menu and plenty of events on. Also child and dog friendly.
N. B.
Good pub spoiled by frequently having a poor variety of real ales and inconsistent quality of cooking in the restaurant. Very pleasant staff and customers.
J. B.
Lovely pub with a great beer garden, really friendly staff, decent drinks prices and the food is absolutely banging!
D. C.
Live music and DJs at weekends, rotated monthly & fortnightly respectively; a reasonable restaurant cooking fresh (popular at weekends); beer garden; and craft beers & bar snacks; plus monthly record fair for vinyl lovers.
A. W.
Great pub. Good selection of beer, long bar with quick service, log fire, lots of seating and table football!
H. P.
Great tap selection
J. W.
Mediocre food and service. Pub is nicer on the inside and rear than it looks from the curb side. Best for a casual drink rather than a meal.
A. S.
Such a little gem...always amazing atmosphere, the staff are really helpful and the best characters plus they have great food and really good craft beer/local breweries.
K. V.
Cool pub right in front of Forest Gate station.
