Reviews of George
M. N.
When there are festive events going on in London Bridge area or Borough Market, we always seem to finally end up at the George pub. It has a large court yard from which you can see The Shard and they do have outside heaters . The place is big with many sections. There's all a fire place at the front end.. 2 sets of toilets..one at far back and one at the front in a separate building. Staff are friendly.. bar gets busy but you get served quick. Anything from full meals or just coffee and chips.
A. W.
Great pub. It's actually the only surviving galleried London coaching Inn. Original interiors and amazing atmosphere makes you want to just stay in, drink and eat. Food was fantastic. I recommend fried chicken burger. You can also spot original gas lanterns that not many are left in London. Well done for owners for keeping this little pearl of geart London history in such a good shape.
J. T.
The staff were amazing helping us throw a safe & most amazing wedding party in December amongst the stress of the pandemic! Cannot recommend this place highly enough for any function, great food, service & atmosphere
E. B.
3 of us dropped into The George after an afternoon wandering around Borough Market. We were able to get a table right away and there was a great selection of drinks. Staff were so friendly and the pub has a great atmosphere! A really good pub and they have a nice outside area too, will be coming back for sure.
C. M.
Awesome pub right next to Borough Market/London Bridge! The courtyard offers lovely views of the Shard and the pub has ample seating space both outside and inside. The building itself reminds me of the building style from New Orleans, very cool.
It can get busy post work time so be aware if planning to go during the week between 5 and 7.
K. T.
Old style building with good atmosphere and nice space inside and outside. Was quite busy on Thursday evening. One bar is quite small but didn't queue too long. Would recommend. Haven't tried the food but menu looked decent.
R. D.
Come on on a full belly :p It's an excellent pub, great location, and staff. But i can't give a 5-star after having eaten their food. I had there what was probably the worst steak and ale pie I've ever tasted. The burgers my friends ordered also looked gross. All food seems just out of the microwave, but with real food prices. AVOID THE FOOD at all costs!
D. J.
Lovely drinkers pub with a huge range of ales at several prices, and pies served. Bookable rooms upstairs and tables can be reserved. Famed as 'Shakespeare's local' but a great pub in its own right, ideal for good conversation with friends or a quiet pint with a book.
b. w.
I booked a table for 8 of us for a post Xmas get together. There was 3 vegetarian’s with us.
Let me just say the food was outstanding at every level. The steak and ale pie was one of the best I’ve ever had.
Thank you for making it such a lovely day.
P. M.
This place was so good. I had the best chocolate cake here that I ever had in my life. I enjoyed the service, and the people who worked here were warm and welcoming.
W.
Really helpful and friendly staff. Love this old pub a must for anyone who likes pubs with history. Inside like a warren. Food was presented well and tasty.
Only reason 4 was the beer barrels piled up in yard I'm hoping this is not usually the case.
D. T.
We had the sunday roast meals. Food came really fast, in good proportion and was quite delicious. Staff was also very friendly too. The only downside is that you must download their app for ordering which took forever to download and get it set up. The app was badly designed, slow and not working properly occasionally.
J. S.
Great pub. Just off the main street so you feel more enclosed in privacy from busy london. An old building which is uniquely very beautiful. We went here for a belated xmas work do and the food was amazing. Our waiter, who I forgot to ask his name was a slim built man with light hair and beard. He was extremely good at helping us with our orders and adjusted my friends order as she had an allergy, this was without any issues. He was very friendly and had great people skills and made our experience amazing. I will come again for sure!
V. L.
Lovely looking pub, very friendly staff. Great fish and chips. Disappointed by the cheesecake which wasn't at all the one described in the menu. Queried it but was told it was correct, bit odd.Hot pot was okay.
K. H.
I love the oldest pub in London. 3 floors of an old building off a cobblestone street. I can't wait to enjoy it during the summer,..Today, it was warm and dry and we enjoyed our drinks after a long afternoon sightseeing all along the Thames!
W. T.
Nice pub to visit as an away fan for Millwall. Had a slight shock at nearly £8 a pint though!
N.
The place is great. Such an amazing courtyard just 5 mins walking from London Bridge station. The rating would go to a much higher number were not for the poor food we got. The halloumi was not nice to eat and the Korean chicken wings were bland with not a pinch of Korean flavour. Would go back for drinks but never to eat a thing there.
A. H.
A lovely 17th Century pub with authentic features from back in the day. There's essentially three parts to the pub: the main, the "annexe" and the courtyard, which is perfect for the summer. There is a great collection of gins on offer.
h. s.
Fantastic 17 century coaching inn owned by the National Trust. I had a very nice dinner with some very expensive beer (£6.60 for Neckoil) but then it is a very special place! Well worth a visit!
S. M.
Always a great venue for history and beer. Today, two disappointing things. One, the staff seem to prefer chatting together rather than even looking at the customer they are serving. Secondly, the Parliament Bar, my favourite, reeked of toilets today. Standards are slipping.
S. K.
An excellent example of the fantastic history London has to offer. Lovely public house with a large outside seating area. Toilets inside and out as well, bonus. Lol. Can get very busy.
Range of ales as expected and served very well by pleasant and attentive staff. When we went in winter it was also very nice to find an open fire in one of the areas.
Do some research, pay a visit and have a wander. Highly recommended.
J.
As good as they say. Love they seem to have rolled in extra teles for 6 nations. Food good and beer is grand. All around positive vibes.
S. B.
Bustling, atmospheric old coach house in the centre of London. Half expected to bump into Mr Pickwick. Excellent pint of Abbot.
M. L.
Great old pub with big selection of drinks. Friendly staff. Dudnt have food but looked and smelt really nice.
R. G.
What a lovely find. Old gallery pub near London Bridge. Went In with Dusk app for a free pint.
Bar staff were wonderful and helpful to everyone they served.
Didn't actually eat but the food smelled amazing. Will definitely go again when in London.
W. W.
An outstanding pub in an amazing location. The historic coaching inn is wonderful, but the staff don’t rest on their laurels. Service is excellent and the prices are reasonable for the area. A great range of drinks and food.
A. R.
Lovely pub in the busy heart of London Bridge. I booked a table because I know how hectic the area is but although the downstairs and bar was as busy as I thought it would be, upstairs was quiet and absolutely lovely. Still book in advance if you can! The people who greeted us were expecting us, and gave us a very good seat by the big window. Both were very friendly. I was asked if we wanted to know the history of the pub which I said yes to and was given an A4 sheet with great information. The starter arrived just as I was finishing reading it and it was delicious! The main arrived soon after. The fish was very flavourful and moist.
Definitely recommend if you want lovely English food in a traditional pub feel.
L. S.
Historic courtyard pub and very convenient for London Bridge. It has a good selection of beers and efficient service at the bar, which is necessary given how busy it gets.
T. M.
We were finally able to visit the George a few years ago and it was by luck we stumbled across it. Such an awesome history lesson of a pub and was glad to finally put a face to the book about it!
L. M.
Very busy Sunday
This is a pub ....with food.
If you are looking for a restaurant to meet family on a Sunday. This isn't the place. If you want to meet your friends and have drinks and nibbles, this is the place for you.
Music way too loud if you want to sit outside, we asked to be moved. Also some random lady - who I presumed was part of the music 'act' -spinning around with a hula hoop. Very bizarre 🤣
Food was okay, nothing exciting, the steak sandwich was....erm...well we sent it back. Just a price of meat thrown in between two old slices.
Lots of food on the menu sold out or not available.
3 stars because the staff were lovely.
D. M.
Great pub tucked away off borough high street. Huge covered out side section with heaters. Really lovely old hostelry, with an extensive drink selection. Food looked good too
M. B.
Great National Trust pub. The last galleried pub in London. Loverly uneven creaky floorboards add to the old world atmosphere. Good selection of beers. Food menu was good and reasonably priced, we ate in one of the bars not the restaurant. If you live quirky pubs this is a must. Staff were friendly and food was served quickly.
T. L.
Started our Saturday off at the George when it opened, as we had about an hour to wait for our table at the breakfast club.
What an amazing pub with a great selection of drinks and the food menu was tradition and diverse.
We went about our day after 3 drinks, but loved the atmosphere at 11am that we came back to The George as our last pub of the night for more mulled wine/cyder. 10/10!! Would highly recommend to friends!
S. G.
Lovely afternoon celebrating my daughter's schools results here with friends and family. They concentrate on creating a covid secure environment for having a drink. Lovely location and dog friendly as well!
T. B.
Best pub in the area. Be it to watch the football, have Sunday lunch with your nearest and dearest, or simply choose from the extensive selection of beer and spirits, The George is the place to go. Alejandro, Tayla and all Front of House will always greet you with a smile and ensure all your needs are catered for. An extremely inviting, vibrant pub whose hospitality is not to be missed!
L. K. M.
History- is oozing out of the walls, the building itself is a reason to go to this pub, original interiors and great atmosphere. Great selection of beverages, and Beers as well.
B. D.
True rarity. The last of what used to be a gallery inn that has survived since sixteen century (but likely earlier) true to its purpose, although originally it was one of a few coach inns catering to traders bringing goods to London - location is crucial as there was only one bridge, the London Bridge. London theatre companies used to perform in galleried courtyards of such inns prior to the erection of purpose-built theatres mid-sixteen century. The pub is owned by the National Trust to preserve its heritage.
History aside, drink, food and merriment abound. Always busy but large courtyard helps! Well recommended!
L. R.
Friendly bar staff and decent drinks in a wonderfully historic pub.
P. B.
Went here for another night as first night was amazing.
Tonight all the systems went down and can I just say the bar staff dealt with it amazingly and kept all the punters happy.
Would so recommend this place to anybody that's is in the area .
10 out of 10 for service and customer service.
I will be back girls and guys .
Thanks for a great couple of nights in canary wharf.
D. W.
Great old local pub. Great food and ale. Cider festival on at the moment
B. S.
A really cool place with a good choice of drinks and a tasty cuisine. The wooden interior is very nice and reminds of an old ship.
V. K.
Historic public house since 17th century. Very interesting building. Great selection of lagers and ales. Friendly stuff, good atmosphere.
V. W.
Lovely pub, well situated to public transport, good cold beer, well worth a visit
L. H.
Love this place. Been coming here since 1999. Great location, ancient tradtional old London pub. Love it! Hidden away behind an inconspicuous entrance on Borough high street. Great selection of beers too. Lots of seating outside and upstairs. A must visit.
T. S.
Fabulous building well worth a visit. Had the roast which was much needed after a hectic previous night but couldn't get coffee 😔
D. T.
Brilliant, perhaps the oldest pub in London. Galleried and looking fantastic. Borough is the place to go!
Another day, another visit. This is still a lovely place to go! Great beer + hot gin and gingerbread if you so wish. Add this place to your agenda.
N. M.
I adored the old authentic building with a wow effect. The food was nice. I especially enjoyed my dessert: was huge and yummy. The waiter was friendly but her mood changed a few times in the course of our dinner: maybe she was just tired. All in all a nice experience.
P. T.
Great pub with lots of history. The courtyard is great and has a great atmosphere on Thursdays and Fridays.
A. W.
Great pub sandwiched behind the grubbiness of London Bridge. A slice of old London sitting right in the belly of the very worst 1980s architects had to offer. Track them down and shoot them. Nonetheless, it's a fantastic pub with great staff who serve quickly and offer service with a smile. The food looks good too.
S. S.
Best fish and chips in a long time. Efficiently served, staff pleasant. Only grumble a lot of pies unavailable would have been useful to be told that before ordering! Then ordering something else to be told that wasn't available either.
D. T.
Very busy traditional pub, that dates back to 1676!
R. B.
Lovely welcoming staff, great looking pub and great location.
Awful food. We paid £14 per head for a Sunday lunch, the food was cold and just really poor, 2 meals had to go back and the food still wasn’t hot!
I would revisit but for a drinks only
K. H.
Lively pub with huge beer garden. The service was friendly and quick. Good menu of classic british grub such pie and mash, fish and chips and gammon, egg and chips.
S. B.
Fabulous historic pub doing good beer and food! Always try to pop in for a quick drink and enjoy the surrounds/building!
D. A.
Visited this place on a Friday evening. In a courtyard area , , down a side street off the main borough high Street great atmosphere good selection of tunes & drinks and a big screen TV to boot. Staff were really friendly and helpful too
P. A.
Bustling, and I mean BUSY, pub. But they handle the crowd well, both inside and outside on the patio. Beer, GnT, food was standard. And then you look up and see those wood beams in low ceiling and think about the history of the place. Just, wow.
M. S.
Good pub, food isn't particularly special but it's decent
S. F.
This place is great in the summer as it has a huge outdoor seating area and has heaters outside during the winter months
The bar area is small but a well managed.
The pub is lovely and traditional and has ties to local history (owned by the national trust)
J.
Great pub, great location, great atmosphere, great staff...love it here ...say no more!
Y. R.
The place is fantastic for a drink, very cool building, defently worth going. But we had the Sunday roast one day, and I have to say it was the worst roast we have had so far in London, yorkshire pudding was like cardboard, the rest was meh
L.
Welcoming staff, delicious food and well, the location speaks for itself. I can't recommend it enough!
E. D.
Enjoyed a lovely meal served by a very friendly staff member called Ellen. A great atmosphere. There was a DJ in the street outside giving a pride sing-along, which was great fun.
G. G.
The setting is the real winner here; a classic and rickety pub in a secluded courtyard amongst the bustling London Bridge area. The food was also nice and the service was very friendly. I would recommended the speciality George Ale here, it really hits the spot with fruitiness and flavour.
A. P.
The courtyard is large with spaced out tables. We went with a toddler in a stroller and had no issues. Their ales are delicious and bartenders are friendly. Looking forward to returning.
P. W.
Great pub. Dog friendly, the nice staff brought over a bowl of water for my puppy which was lovely. Recommended
J. W.
Great oldy worldy pub, fab decor! Good selection of beers and gins, although I didn't eat there food looked good.
L. B.
I was there taken but a friend to celebrated a pre birthday dinner. In the beginning I though uhhhh a pub not good. But I loved it. I must say the place should be more look after some of the furniture isn’t in a good state.
But the food was amazing and the service was very polite and profesional.
The pub is big and busy located in the heart of Guys Hospital student area.
I was very please, definitely I will come back again.
M. L.
Unbelievable little pub. Great history. Good beer selection and good Sunday uotions for dining as well.
T. G.
What a lovely little part of London. So much history in one of the oldest pubs in England. And nice not to pay a fortune for a drink in the city.
K. G.
Great, it a very very old pub. So people have used it for centuries. William Shakespeare himself may have even had a drink here and Charles Dickens.
G. G.
James, Emma and Matt were absolutely amazing, the service was top notch, if you're in the area make sure your drop in for a beer, you'll be welcomed with the loveliest and most warming attitude.
See you soon, we love the George Inn... X
L. S.
Really relaxed, super lovely, helpful staff. Great dinner good range of beer. I'm a nurse next door, and they left a sweet message💙🌈💙
M. A.
Fabulous courtyard old pub. Shame about the toilets.
H. H.
One of the best pubs in London in my opinion. So good I got married here. It’s a national trust property, Green King brewery manage the pub. There are some great staff here delivering great service. Gets busy at weekends and well worth the few minuets at the bar. Loads of space in the courtyard for summer evenings and multiple rooms to eat and drink in when it’s cold. There are still many original period features in the property and drinking here almost takes you back to 16th century London
A. L.
A must visit when in London Bridge! Authentic inn with awesome views and such a pretty pub. Shakespeare used to frequent here and I can see why!
J.
Great pub with a large selection of ales, lagers, wine and spirits, the staff go above and beyond to help you.
G. R.
George Inn where Dickens and Shakespeare used to frequent, low ceiling and paved floors and outside is cobble stone's. A bit expensive price for the drinks but this is an historic pub to visit.
J. P.
Great pub with lively atmosphere. Very popular. Good food to match.
L. W.
Nice historic pub, friendly staff. However the ladies toilets are a disgrace - broken tap, two out of the three cubicals have missing locks and the other has a missing toilet seat.
T. B.
A great quirky pub with plenty of space inside + out.
A. M.
Historic pub in Borough. Retains original coaching inn features. Green King beers which are OK food that looks passable but I haven't tried it. Very busy with large outside drinking area. If you are in the area worth a visit.
B. W.
Gorgeous ancient pub with lots of little nooks and spaces to sit in and a huge heated beer garden.
A must visit for tourists and locals alike. Service and food are very good as well.
D. F.
Great pub, lovely outdoors, where Shakespeare used to drink. Well worth a visit
g.
A pub and a restaurant. Offers British must-eat classics like fish and chips, but also some other dishes to share like halloumi and tacos. Very nice classic interior brings you back in time. Clean toilets available (on the ground floor and on the first floor also).
I. S.
Great pub tucked away good food good beer selection 2 mins from B Market has a great courtyard but also lovely in side and above all great friendly service.
J. P. T.
Hidden gem.came across by accident lively food..no pies left.. known 4 their pies mmmm.. will ve back. Lovely atmosphere, quaint old fashioned inn..
S. D.
Lively atmosphere, with great music, and decent priced libations. Highly recommend taking the Cloak and Dagger tour that delves into the sordid history of the establishment.
C. R.
Nice pub.. went for private party..lovely food but shame the bar was outside the room..in the cold and long queues with normal drinkers...
M. S.
Really cool pub to go to for late night drinks. The history of the pub is amazing and staff were extremely friendly
M. R.
Great pub and my dog loves the fire

Traditional English Menu in a historic Coaching in.
Great venue and excellent service from our attentive waiter Dean.
P. E.
Revisited July 2019 yet again a very enjoyable stay service excellent as at every other visit, food both at breakfast and dinner very good. Lot of beer choice including the dent brewery beers. Photo of scampy from menu.
C. B. K.
Brilliant old pub with its books and crannies as well as a large outdoor area. Love that they have chips and fries. Also had a lovely salad.
Need to try the rest of their menu! Maybe Sunday roast - Will update this!
j. p.
A fantastic pub, that has great alcohol and food to choose from. The staff on site are excellent and very friendly. A massive beer garden to soak up the sun and the atmosphere outside.
M. R.
Nice pub with great food at decent price. Had the bbq chicken - good flavor with sizable portion. Service was prompt and friendly
R. G. P.
Great food and service as always. The host at the gate got us a table ahead of the booked time indoors and then moved us to the balcony when the table freed up. Dean and his lady colleague (forgot her name) were both super nice and made it feel like you are having drinks and dinner at home.
G. H.
An amazing building like stepping back in time as it the last galleried coaching Inn left in London. The bars and rooms all interlink and continue upstairs to dining rooms and further bars. Really friendly serving staff make it feel even more homely.
J. H.
Great place. Lots of tables outside, good beers, historic National Trust building.
S. W.
Good, pub, good promotions, nice place for a drink.
R. H.
Towards the end of the day it gets loud and overcrowded. I'm not a fan of this kind of establishment but the food was delicious nonetheless.
A. R.
An amazing hidden Gem of a pub. Lovely space and great atmosphere and food.
C. C.
Great casual food, excellent atmosphere. Super experience if you are in town.
A. M.
Nice pub with lots of inside and outside seating and friendly staff. Fair selection of drinks and good food. Recommended.
D. M.
There's a great selection of beers but they are all at a premium price.
J. A.
One of my favourite pubs in London. Very interesting building with many historic rooms. It can get very busy at happy hour but calms down after. Food is good and very fast service. Decent range of ales on. Friendly and efficient staff.
D. H.
Quirky 16th century pub with a large outside sitting area and plenty of bars, with views of the shard. Perfect for a warm spring day with a good selection of drinks
L. T.
Genial staff / good grub / historical pub and quiet location ! :)
A.
Great historic pub, was reccomend to go by family. Very easy to use app if you want to order from your table. Plenty of tables inside and out, had a REALLY good roast beef dinner here
M. B.
Great old pub, with a long history as an inn. There’s a plaque suggesting Shakespeare may have drunk (been drunk?) here. Who knows. What is certain is that the place would have been somewhat different 400 years ago. But it is a historic place nonetheless.
The pub itself is fairly small, so it can get cramped in the winter. In the summer everyone spills out into the courtyard, but at popular times you may have to stand.
Choice of beer is pretty good. The food is average. This is definitely more of a drinkers pub.
F. S.
Staff were amazing. Had a v difficult food order (two salads, one gluten Free, the other normal but with no avo, halloumi on one, chicken on the GF one etc....) and they handled it expertly. Drinks also were amazing - they proffered recommendations and, even though they were busy, they still found time to check in with us later to see how we were getting on.
F.
Lovely pint on outside tables. Excellent selection of ciders and beers on tap. Cider festival commencing on the 16th of August for a couple of weeks.
D. N.
Rich history, knowledgeable staff and great beer. Cloak and dagger tour runs from here, a must for any fans of gruesome history, Chaucer or Dickens
K. P.
Had a lovely lunch here with a large group of friends. Quick service and a roaring fire to warm us.
N. O.
Yet another great night with old & new friends. I feel a fraud in the company of these men. As for the George it hasn't lost the atmosphere or the friendly service of the staff even after all these years. Keep cracking on & we will always return
M.
Charismatic London pub. Toasted sarnie was lovely and very good, quick service too.
t. k.
Surely one of Londons best historic pubs. A beautiful old coaching house, unusual, but sizeable and always welcoming. A hidden gem down one of the sidestreets by London Bridge Station. Not to be missed
D. O.
Lovely staff, especially Ellen who worked very hard all the time we where there.lovely food too.
C. A.
Great place for a cosy drink or a group do, absolutely smashing, an old, old place 😊
J.
Good range of beers. Great historical building. Both inside and outside of the building was interesting.
E. W.
Massive pub, but still had a good vibe to it - nice old feel
R. H.
Great meal with my family. Staff were friendly and service was great
S. H.
Charming pub with lots of original character. Can imagine it's great in winter. A bit messy here and there but not an issue overall.
M. R.
Good choice of beer, great outside seating area. Quick bar service.
J. M.
Absolute fantastic pub with history, great ales, and outstanding atmosphere!
To have the possibility to sit outside is a big plus for this pub!
Go there ;-)
n. c.
Fabulous old London pub. Minutes from Borough Market with good beer and great staff
d.
Lovely pub, fab vegan burger and the best ever chips any pub has ever served!
D. F.
Cracking great pub in an historic coaching inn now run by the National Trust. Drink here and support a good cause! Great selection of Greene King ales including their own George Inn Ale which is reminiscent of GK’s IPA. Very good food selection and, being the last remaining gallery pub in London, the place can’t be beat for atmosphere and style. Tops!
B. B.
Good food. Decent prices. Making an order, if you are new (i.e., tourist), is a bit confusing at first. Simple really; just choose a table and then head in to place your order with the bartender.
M. F.
Food was reasonable and service was great, food was classic pub food style and the atmosphere is lively. Lacked something special that I was expecting from the"oldest ale house in London".
Might come back however wouldn't go out of my way to return.
A. S.
This place should be in Diagonal Alley (Harry Potter), great atmosphere at night!
P. R.
Friendly staff, cold beers and lovely prices for London
D.
Decent pub with a good range of beer and real ales
A. S.
The George is famous old coaching inn which was rebuilt in 1677 after a fire.
Look out for the balconies which were used for Elizabethan theatrical productions
Charles Dickens in fact visited the George and referred to it in Little Dorret. A green king pub making it easy to order food and drink via the app. Friendly and attentive bar staff. Standing pub fair as well as some good sharing platters.
C. G.
I pass this pub on my commute home. The George Inn near London Bridge station was built in 1677. Charles Dickens was a regular customer here! It is the oldest surviving galleried (balconied) Inn and just a short distance awake is where Chaucer started his pilgrimage. Definitely worth a visit if you’re ever in the area.
B. H.
Good choice of beers (meant I didn't have to drink GK IPA), food enjoyable, and we'll.looked after by Ellen in the restaurant.
M. L.
Good drinks selection, loads of space inside and out
D. H.
Good food, and good selection of beers/drinks, but gets really busy at certain times of the day. Staff are great, and really on point with serving people, but it's a great pub just off of Borough High Street, so you're going to have to be patient at some times of the day
I. S.
Great pub tucked away good food good beer selection 2 mins from B Market has a great courtyard but also lovely in side and above all great friendly service.

Lovely pint on outside tables. Excellent selection of ciders and beers on tap. Cider festival commencing on the 16th of August for a couple of weeks.
C. M.
Staff are attentive, food great, reasonably priced and very clean. Definitely go back
S. F.
This place is great in the summer as it has a huge outdoor seating area and has heaters outside during the winter months
The bar area is small but a well managed. …
L. C.
Great place for drinks with friends. Excellent customer service - out waiter was exceptional!
R. G.
Had a beer here on a beautiful evening. Sat outside on the courtyard. Ordered the beers on the app, they then appeared after a few minutes. Pleasant experience.
V. H.
had drinks here, covid safe, staff friendly full of history , good to visit
S. D.
Lively atmosphere, with great music, and decent priced libations. Highly recommend taking the Cloak and Dagger tour that delves into the sordid history of the establishment.
M. D.
Authentic 17th-century coaching inn and pub with oak beams and large courtyard seating area.
L. M.
Good small pub,big outdoor area
H. L.
Love this pub!!! One of my faves for when I'm visiting London :)
Staff great, venue is stunning but mainly.....
The Grapefruit gin has me happily sold :)
E. B.
Interesting old pub,excellent bitter 😊
T. W.
Always a great place to catch up with friends. It's central too so many can meet up in one awesome place!
Z. K.
A splendid meeting point of the oldest and the latest cries in London architecture. Worth a visit, the drinks and the food were both exce)ent.
B. D.
Great tucked away find. Including a beer garden without the crowds of borough market
R. O.
Very busy historic pub. Bar staff polite and efficient.
A.
I love this pub. Its a real jewel in the Crown of the local area. Only 4 stars at the moment though as the covid security could do with work though. Not convinced the divider we had between us and the group we were sharing a table with achieved much. The group changed while we were there as well. So that's probably 5 people I wasnt socially distanced from. Toilets were busy as well. Really could do with a person limit.
App ordering and table service worked and large outdoor area though.
L. C.
Great place for drinks with friends. Excellent customer service - out waiter was exceptional!
H. B.
I was very impressed with the pub.
Went during Covid and the outdoor area was relatively well spaced with some divides on the tables.
I found the food good, though a few on the menu weren't available. The cost was what you would expect for London.
N. B.
Very nice beer and my first time trying the real deal about fish and chips.
E. P.
We visited this pub on a Saturday night and had a great time dancing and drinking a class of wine. Felt like we were in Mykonos. Definitely recommend.
C.
A fantastic Sunday roast. Historic pub... Built in 1542. William Shakespeare and Charles Dickson both drank and wrote here.
T. B.
If you are searching for a historic pub with a great atmosphere, add this one to your list of favorites.
J. S.
Mulled wine on a cold winter morning
A. M.
Visited 31/7/21. Five people. Unique and lovely National Trust pub. Greene King run. Beers and Ales were well kept but pricey, even for London. Lunch was excellent overall. However, the mash with my sons steak and kidney pudding was very poor, clearly reheated and completely bland. Surely better quality mash could be sourced.
Sorry to say that the male toilets in the pub were really mucky and tatty and not at all nice to use. My wife also mentioned that the ladies weren't great either.
This is unacceptable, particularly during a pandemic when hygiene is paramount.
Always worth a visit though.
B. H.
The beef and bone marrow pie was delicious. A great little place for a pint and a bite. They were great at adjusting for kids and making full meals into kids portion.
G. S.
Excellent atmosphere, beers and food good. Pies excellent.
t. m.
Just a lovely warm glass of mulled wine to warm us up but great setting.
A. V.
Awesome pub and beers. sirloin stake rather fatty.
d. s.
Great location, service friendly, fast and fun! Beer selection is okay, could be great with a teeny bit more
J. J. P.
Great pub with a wonderful, old world atmosphere.
T. R.
Friendly staff members great atmosphere out door seating was well laid out. Order food drinks on the App quick service. Just around the corner from London Bridge.
A. H.
Pure British food. Reasonable prices considering the history of the venue and the spot.
A. C.
Friendly pub, which at one time hosted both Shakespeare and Dickens. So, if you fancy a pint at the local of some of Britain's greatest literary giants, you can't go far wrong here.
G. B.
We really loved this pub food was great and prices fair great atmosphere
A. B. -. B. P. E.
Very romantic place. I went with a friend and we had the most amazing time.
T. B.
The thing I liked most about the george was the staff .....so welcoming and friendly nothing was too much trouble. They took time to check customers had everything they needed... they also took the time to have a conversation with who ever wanted to chat. Customer service was excellent without being intrusive or forced. We visited on sunday 6th sept and had the Sunday roast ...It was delicious such a big portion I never thought I would finish it but I did we had lamb and beef both beautiful best roast potatoes I've had when eating out. I thoroughly recommend the george. The customer service balance was perfect .....efficient...professional ....warm and friendly. Such a historical beautiful building too the george has it all.
D. D.
Lorna was an absolute hero, and made sure we were seated as walk-ins even at the busiest time of day. Would highly recommend this place for anyone who appreciates a pub that values customer service and a friendly approach.
G. K.
For everyone who doesn’t know, that’s supposed to be the oldest pub in London. Great beer variation and nice terrace with view of the shard.
A. R.
A classic pub that's been around since the 17th Century. Unfortunately getting dwarfed by some ugly surrounding buildings.
R. R.
Fun courtyard location and very historically significant. Beers are decent although slightly pricier than average.
R. M.
Great outdoor space for when the weather is nice. Good selection of drinks and quite pretty too.
E. M.
Nice outdoor area. Went on a Sunday and it was busy but not too crowded
B. A.
A great pub in a very nice location, away from the high street noise. Delicious food and good service.
k. h.
Historical treasure frequented by Dickens and Shakespeare. Lovely food. Views of the Shard.
M.
Great classic British food on the menu with some welcome additions such as the battered halloumi. Service was fast and there was a great selection of drinks.
M. T.
Great beer, great food & great company! What's not to like!
K. G.
As usual a busy pub but in the best of ways. Staff were amazing. Easy to order drinks. Well done and thank god it's back open
S. J. B.
My favouritest pub in London if it is quiet and the restaurant part is quite or closed. You can explore all the little rooms. Great.
M. W.
Very nice pub grub great service
M. R.
Great pub, full of history. Wide range of beers and excellent meals.
S. B.
Definitely one of my favourite pubs in London. Large outdoor area, great for meeting friends, and this pub has real history and heritage.
R. D.
Sadly the food remains as mediocre as ever at this pub that has spent too many years reliant on uncritical tourist custom as it is in every guide book. They could not even reheat simple pasta dishes!
One plus point - they were offering free hot water bottles to "group of six" parties at outdoor tables in the courtyard.
V.
Brilliant service, good food. Cocktails menu can do with bit more variety but all in all good place to spend some times with your mates.
R. G.
Had a beer here on a beautiful evening. Sat outside on the courtyard. Ordered the beers on the app, they then appeared after a few minutes. Pleasant experience.
S. M.
Great view of the shard, reasonable London prices but limited seating. Very much the basic pub experience of England.
A. D. L.
Chose this place after reading my own google reviews. 100% satisfied. Food was as good as English food will be for a Mexican. 😄😄
I loved all the decor and its history. Great customer service.
d. j.
A hidden gem, excellent food and a shaded area outside during the heatwave.
Great service.
D. P.
Great atmosphere here and great staff. Food is mediocre.
D. B.
Apparently the only remaining galleried coaching in left in London.
I Love this pub and have been many times, to think that it was visited by Charles Dickens and William Shakespeare just proves how much history is in this great pub/inn.
D. L.
Staff extremely friendly and found a couple of seats for us outside even though we hadn't booked.
Great old building with lots of original features.
M. S.
Great typical English pub! Big large terrace, perfect for an after work.
M. C.
Really nice pub. Lovely place to sit during the summer as it's closed off from all the traffic. However, one star missing as the waiters aren't that friendly and were quite rushing of me.
M. O.
Fantastic place, love it here. Food and service brilliant
G. D.
Very cool historic pub in London Bridge. I believe Shakespeare once drank there. Great place for a beer. Great outdoor seating area.
K. H.
Loved our visit, a tradional pub, with great food, and a extensive range of ales
J. B.
This is a great location to hand out have a beer and lunch, a load of history so soak up the atmosphere, service can be a bit slow when they are busy.
V. H.
had drinks here, covid safe, staff friendly full of history , good to visit
J. R.
Nice pub , lovely food
T. J.
Warm and friendly staff, amazing food. Old but quaint decor. Nice all round vibe.
A. H.
Fantastic pub, gets the sun for most of the day. Lorna was an absolute star and made sure we were taken care of. So lovely to be back in pubs :)
L. E.
Another welcoming venue. Definitely worth a visit. 😊
E. M.
The George has been serving great food and beverages to travelers and tourists for more than 500 years. We went there last night and our waiter Dean and the other staff were exceptionally nice and welcoming. The food was excellent and the prices were great for top notch London food. Great for kids and families like ours, but with romantic tables for two, with the courtyard for groups looking to drink. One if the nicest places we have been in London. The current building dates from 1676!
A.
Excellent Pub! While it was cold outside the drinks were strong and made the night worthwhile. An exiciting ambience and definately a place to stop for a eventful night out in London.
G. R.
I like the George. The large courtyard is great in summer and the fire in the front room is cheerful in winter. They have a good beer selection and the staff are helpful. It gets very busy here, especially Friday evenings and Saturday afternoons and is popular with tourists. The food is fine without being great, and is filling, if you are looking for good food there are lots of good options nearby.
m. a.
My kinda place, great beer n food, tons of history and a roaring fire place
Z. Z.
Friendly staff, great selection of food and drinks, highly recommend!
G. H.
Amazing historical pub. Highly recommend it.
V. F.
Very lovely staff - thank you 😊
P. R.
Nice, lovely courtyard and history. Love the inside and the different rooms. Very welcoming, staff very pleasant, but maybe a little more expensive than expected.
p. d.
Great food, great beer and staff very helpful
F.
Lovely old pub, good atmosphere,to late to eat so no food review.Definately go back..
R. H.
Great pub. Loads of seating in a labyrinth of rooms upstairs. Can always get a seat and great for either a quiet drink or a big group. Has excellent outside space with loads of bench tables, heaters and outside bars. Gets very busy on sunny days! Food is good. Especially their fish finger sandwiches!
C. M.
Staff are attentive, food great, reasonably priced and very clean. Definitely go back
J. L.
Great atmosphere, great food, great service. Everything London should be.
S. H.
Lovely. Historic. Friendly helpful staff. Great food.
P. D.
Perfectly pleasant, busy touristy hub. Serving pricy ubiquitous beers and wine and decent (also pricy) bog standard pre prepared pub grub.
H. W.
Great pub, good atmosphere and fab view of the shard. Love the seating in the courtyard.
C. Y.
Was good. but really disappointing today.lady greeting wasn't happy my NHS App wouldn't work.then the App for the pub wouldn't download.always had good service.not today. Wednesday.Had spoken to Tom and have to say he was really lovely.and apologised.looking forward to next visit to London.and visiting the george.xx
M. W.
Really enjoyed my night out. Very good food at the George.
S. H.
Nice place for a quick pint. You can feel the age of the pub without it being tatty.
I. S.
Charming old pub with differently styled rooms on multiple levels and a large beer garden outside in the courtyard. It gets very busy in the evenings, especially on a Friday night. Good selection of ales, stouts & beers. More expensive in comparison to other pubs in the area. Friendly and efficient staff, serving with a smile. Food was ok – decent pub grab, but nothing too special or amazing.
A. G.
Lovely old pub with a good choice of ales is good, i had Southwark Brewery, LOA which is easy drinking sessions ale. Choice of food is not large, but always pleased with sharing platters like different flavour chicken wings. Currently under going some renovation work so front of the pub has scaffolding up, but do not let this put you off as well worth a visit to a historic building which is a 5 minute walk from London Bridge station and across from Borough market.
j. y.
A superb old pub with various rooms making it quite unique. The courtyard is huge which is always packed midweek through the summer and always an atmosphere during the winter as Londoners aren’t scared of the cold.
Great selection of ales with plenty of IPAs and the regular selection of lagers. Standard prices for London and the food is very good too. Charles Dickens is said to have drank here but where he didn’t drink is a bigger mystery. It’s also worth popping along just to see the old gallery.
E. S.
Good to do business with. Any should go to them for your travel ticket.
B. T.
Cosy place with an appropriate selection of meals and drinks.
M. P.
Friendly staff, good beer, good food, great atmosphere, thoroughly recommend it
K. E.
Great historic pub complete with courtyard theatre...pre theatre performance space and coaching house. Friendly staff. Wide selection of excellent cask ales and gins.
I did not eat but the menu looked good and food looked appetising. Good atmosphere. Manic between 5.00 and 8.00 for early doors drinkers so avoid if you do not like crowds.
S. J.
I had such a great time at my first experience
J. M.
It was very busy, but I enjoyed a nice cask porter! 😃👍
R. C.
Great place to visit, very busy enjoyable pub, with added security for your protection, well done.
j. i.
A perfect traditional pub in a brilliant location. There is great seating outside with fire heaters to keep you warm on a winters day. Great for a drink with friend and family!
L. F. (.
Went for the Cloak and Dagger tour
Absolutely amazing walking tour
S. C.
Nice setting. We went for a meal, the food want bag, the service was better. It's ticked away of the main road and relatively quiet (we went on a Sunday evening) it's traditional pub fayre so you can't go wrong. Makes a nice change from the now ubiquitous offerings closer to nearby Borough Market.
B.
One of the older pubs I've been to, but genuinely a fantastic atmosphere. Bar staff are very polite. Can get busy at times and had to wait a while to get a drink. Other than that, a good place to go
A. G.
Any Pub lover needs to visit here, the beer and food are great and it has a wonderful atmosphere on a warm day sitting in the courtyard. The history of this place is fascinating dating back to 1542 and being oldest galleried Inn in London make it very special (also it's my namesake, so I might be biased). It's great, go check it out.
S. M.
Great food and drinks. Gin flight a must
D. B.
Absolutely loved this pub. Such a large spacious and well maintained area and building. Service is friendly, they have a decent selection of beers on tap. There is an outside seating area as well.
J. K.
Great beer, very helpful staff, decent food, lovely well appointed authentic old pub. No loud music, no TVs on, just loads of locals having the chat.... Really enjoyed it.
A. T.
We came here to see a Shakespeare play (which was great) so decided to eat here first as time was tight. Although we had not booked we were quickly able to get a table and order and food arrived in a timely manner. The food was amazing and our server Dean provided exceptional service and was very pleasant to speak with!
A. C.
We had some dinner and drinks. Nico on the door was very helpful to find us seats.
Ellen up in the restaurant is fantastic at her job and a pleasure to chat with.
All in all it's visible that a lot of work has gone into organising the pub during this pandemic and all staff are working so hard
P. F.
V nice old pub. Like all pubs, Covid has had an impact here and they are v careful with the usual controls in place. That said, sitting outside on a sunny day is a very pleasant way to while away an hour. You order your drinks at the bar and they bring them to your table.
R. C.
The mulled wine was a bit expensive but the pub is beautiful
G. J.
Lovely interesting friendly cheap venue
D. R.
Lovely old place. Cobblestone path very old inside.
M. H.
One of the older pubs I've been to, but genuinely a fantastic atmosphere. Bar staff are very polite. Can get busy at times and had to wait a while to get a drink. Other than that, a good place to go
A. M.
Cute pub with indoor/outdoor seating. A pint costs just over £5 which is pricey bit not unusual for the area. A gin and tonic is around £7. The outdoor seating is nicer than indoors which can be a little dark.
D. D. J.
I work in the area and this is my favourite after work pub. Great selection of craft beer, ales, wine and spirits. Good food as well and all in a beautiful building with a really nice courtyard garden within a stones throw of London Bridge station. The one downside is it gets pretty busy in the evenings so make sure you get there early if you want a seat.
D. M.
My favourite restaurant and pub in all of London. Has its own classic atmosphere and is recommended for those who are looking to experience a bit of history given the age of this little restaurant/pub and the history behind it (apparently Charles Dickens used to frequent this place). There is also a Cloak and Dagger tour which starts there and ends with a small play in the pub. An amazing tour that adds to this place! Highly recommend. As for the food, it's definitely good quality food, good portions, nice variety in the menu and I personally never had anything to complain about the food. I've always loved the dishes I've ordered.
l.
Large outdoor area and adequate seating inside too. Beers are served at the right temperature and even during peak hours service is quick enough - being just off Borough prices are still up with the top places around town. I've had mixed results with their food selection & quality: really good or just average - seems to be just pot luck. I'd definitely suggest this place for a catch up with your friends/colleagues but maybe hold off on the munchies.
L. G.
Decent pub with large outside area that's shared with neighbouring pubs/bars to form a lively square with tables that have umbrellas and heaters. Prices are what you'd expect for London, a great place for midweek post work drinks with colleagues.
G. S.
This is one of the oldest pubs in London with a unique and special history as a Coaching Inn.
For those without this historical knowledge, these places were stop off points for travellers needing an overnight stay and a place to refresh themselves and feed the horses....
In a modern context, it serves the workers in the London Bridge area, not travellers coming into London from the South East. It's a great place, but busy. It deserves to be. Just stunning, and well worth a visit.
A. T.
Been here numerous times. At its best in lovely summer evenings. Great beer selection and lovely food. Club sandwich is immense. Service good and the historic character of the pub is very atmospheric. Only downside is toilets are a bit tired.
J. S.
Great atmosphere, good selection of lagers and ales including products from local breweries
S. P.
Lovely historic pub, friendly service.
V. N.
Good pub with a nice outside area. They had a huge screen in the 2018 World Cup and a really good atmosphere. The drinks are a little bit more expensive than other pubs around but not too much. I recommend it.
J. B.
Standard food and drink, but the selling point is the outside area and the pub's "history".
The beer garden area is both a blessing and a curse. It can get extremely busy and there's a strange smell that you often get a waft of now and then.
Other than that, can't fault the size and location of the outside section and it makes a great post-work meeting point on a warm summer evening. Beavertown on tap is a welcomed plus.
D. S. B.
Really atmospheric mediaeval coaching inn. Clean, helpful staff, good food
P. V.
Nice pub, but the staff weren't terribly friendly. However, I'd go back to enjoy different parts of the pub - it's got lots of areas to enjoy a pint! Very handy for Borough Market too.
J. F.
Good atmosphere, somewhat pricey drinks.
P. C.
Historic coaching inn. Despite being on the tourist trail, it's also a very good pub. Green King beers, plus interesting rotating guests and a good wine selection. The food is also good. It's really busy in the summer, but their four bars (two outside) cope well. One of my favourite places to wind down after work on a summer evening.
S. B.
Of course this really old hostilery looks fabulous and the atmosphere is lovely ,but beer food and staff are fab too.
D. S.
Great location. Friendly staff. Cozy decor with a fireplace!
We reserved an area for a 10 people. The table was set up and ready for us. The location is great for park lovers, families and dog people with the advantage of a rear entrance to Victoria park and kids play grounds.
The interior is spacious and well equipped. It has large areas for functions and tv areas for the games. Clean and modern but still looking historical. The bar seems a bit small for the size and you might find yourself waiting longer than usual for service. The menu on the wall has a long list of resident beers and ales as well as the craft beer rotation. European, US, Asian and Aussie beers on rotation. As a craft beer enthusiast I was loving it!
This place is amazing for all occasions. The price is slightly north but it well worth it. I will definitely come back again.
N. S.
Great location close to London Bridge and Borough Market . Good service in the outdoor area and commendable range of beers.
J. W.
Excellent pints, I'd especially recommend The George Ale.
D. G.
Just Visiting, a rustic / countryside themed pub that has a good atmosphere. Staff are efficient and good range of beer, extra points for serving a Christmas themed beer that is fresh in January. Good layout. Please note as happened on visit guide dogs only permitted in pub and is a haunt for trendy / city crowd
G. H.
Really well organised met on the way in shown to the table. We ordered drinks on the app, and they were brought us. I could get used to not having to battle at the bar for service then juggling all the way through a crowded bar. Felt very safe all the time we were in.
K. F.
Fabulous pub dating back to Shakespearean times. It's always a little busy so you may need to head upstairs to more rooms. Check out the old wooden terrace upstairs whilst you're at it. Also has big patio area outside which gets rammed all times of year.
D. V.
Not very impressed. Location is ok, tucked in a yard off the main road. It was Christmas dinner so price I paid could be justified, but portions should have done that just as well. It was 3 course meal, soup was literally 5 spoonfuls, mains had 6 roast potatoes, 5 boiled Brussels sprouts, some carrot slices and a 2.5-3.00 square sized Wellington... Taste? OK, nothing Extra ordinary. I would rather avoid going there again, definitely not for Christmas dinner.
E. L. S.
First day in London my friend and I passed by this pub. We went inside for a beer, and fish and chips. Also met a dog named Rascal who seemed to have a run of the place. Perfect first day. Great pub. Can’t beat the combo of great beer, good food, nice people, and a dog.
T. C.
Nice outdoor area in a mews cobbled area off the main road, good service with friendly staff.
J. D.
A very fun and historic pub to visit. I believe this is a heritage landmark site for one, built somewhere in the 1600's. Fine selections of beverages, and very good food. It's tucked in a little out of the way, so it feels like a hidden treasure when you go in. Very relaxed place for lunch, or a pint after work.
M. P.
Lovely pub, quite spacious
P. B.
Lovely being able to sit outside on a very hot day.
Food average I had the Sunday roast which was nothing special and beef was a bit tough and tasteless. My partner, however, had the fish and chips which was excellent.
Tables outside not cleared very often and it all looked a little unclean and unwelcoming.
Æ. R.
Nice historic pub, decent food, good alcohol selection, nice staff. Usually rather busy during the evening, especially outside (has a lovely outdoor seating area with heat lamps, occasionally live events).
X. T.
An awesome and enjoyable Place!
Lot of different beer in a nice old building.
Marvelous!
S. L.
We came here for a lunch on a Sunday. I'd tried to book on several occasions but they never picked up the phone, we decided to chance it anyway and were pleasantly surprised to find lots of tables free.
The drinks were mostly pretty good (one soft drink was a bit flat) and not excessively expensive given the area.
Service was also pretty good, with bar and waiting staff who were pretty quick.
All of this was let down by the food though, we had a philly cheese steak with no cheese, a sausage roll that was dry and a dessert that came with only half a spoon of ice cream. The food was cheap but you could tell.
In short:
Service = Good
Location = Amazing
Drinks = Good
Food = Bad
S. K.
Nice old fashioned pub. Very friendly staff
D. W.
A great pub. It's an amazing building with with all the quirky characteristics of a true British pub. The food is excellent as is the selection of ales. On the downside, some of the staff could be a bit more friendly and having carelessly knocked over and broke a glass it took two hours to have the broken glass cleared away from the table which is both unpleasant and dangerous. On the whole though, very much worth a visit.
A. C.
Nice place to have a pint, although the bartenders mind seems to be in any other place sometimes... he was nice.
S. N.
Lovely friendly pub, great staff, great food
Y. S.
Nice old pub with huge outdoor yard filled with tables & benches but very crowded in the early evening. Had to queue 20 minutes for a drink on arrival and a couple of pushy people twice managed to force their way in when I stood back to let someone use the only visible card terminal on the bar. Chips were lovely though, crisp on the outside but soft & moist inside. Would go there again although it does attract a loud & pushy City clientele.
L. B.
Nice pub atmosphere, lots of space indoors and outdoors but still a cozy historic pub. Good beer selection. Staff at the bar are reasonably good, wait staff are ok-ish. Food is poor. The menu promises way more than the food delivers(e.g. chips are oven chips, not triple cooked and they've never seen a fryer, fish goujons are supermarket fish fingers)
C. B.
Awesome national trust place. Good beer although the food isn't the best around. The courtyard is a real gem if you want a bit of a suntrap on the city and is of a decent size if your meeting quite a few folk.
P. F.
Nice old pub, beer decent. Very busy on a Friday night.
J. F.
Always a delightful atmosphere whenever you go there, nice staff, very nice food - not the cheapest, but very nice
P. D.
Tourists pub normally but not a lot today. Courtyard full and good service at the bar
A. J.
Great place for a pint in a proper old British pub. Heat lamps outside allow for the overflow from the pub to be comfortable outside on a milder evening. There's even a window facing the courtyard where you can order from so you don't have to pop inside.
K. P.
Really nice outside area, but TOO expensive food without even deserving what we paid.
We had two chicken burgers(with chips) with some really sad onion rings plus two beers and we paid £43.
And honestly, I've had much better burgers at any Wetherspoon's.
V. C.
We loved this place! Friendly staff. Very historic. Lots of seating outside. Don't worry about the cold. They have numerous heaters outside. When you get your drink, walk around inside. It's like going back in time. I wish we had places like this in America.
R.
Really good food, had mushroom soup to start then beef and bone marrow pie as a main. Soup was delicious. The pie was ok, a bit on the fatty side but the chips were really nice. Friendly service. It was quite busy so service was a bit slow but we didn't really mind. Would definitely go back again.
T. L.
Good atmosphere, good drink selection. Plenty of seats. Radiators ate hotter than the sun!
L. O.
Great pub with a fantastic huge outdoor area with outdoor heating lamps and live music! Great little find set back just off the street, they had mulled wine, mulled sloe gin and mulled gin & ginger. The mulled drinks weren’t that great - quite watery and didn’t taste very alcoholic but nice a Christmassy.
A. c.
House ale is good, and history of the place is interesting - worth a visit.
N. T. L. S.
I've been coming to the George Inn on and off over the past few years and it has always been a great experience. During summer the outside area is a great place to be with all the people as it creates a really good atmosphere. In Winter they have a room with a fireplace in it (not a real fire), and it's nice to be able to sit in front of it, either facing or away, and chat an afternoon/evening away with friends.
As it is so popular you'll have to get in as early as possible if you want a seat though, especially during Winter if you want to sit indoors. Service can be a bit slow at the bar when it's rammed. I've often seen people come in, look around for a seat and leave as there has been no space. There doesn't seem to be much in the way of places for people to stand comfortably in groups outside of the main bar, which unfortunately adds to the main bar being very crowded, making it difficult to order drinks.
The staff have always been efficient though, if a little brusque (which I guess you can't blame them as it's person after person after person...). Nobody has been rude though which is great. Drinks and food are varied and tasty. They have a number of tasty beers on tap, with a fridge containing ones a little bit different, although no boutique ones that I've noticed. The food is "traditional" pub food but it has always been tasty and made to a good quality.
So definitely head here if you want to experience a great London pub.
S. T.
Great pub.. Very welcoming and looked after by Lorna the landlady!!! Good food as well 👌🏾
J. K.
Wow, was a nice atmosphere here.
Nice beers, hot flamed tubes.
M. L. W.
Really tasty grub. The upstairs dining room is cosy and comfy, the staff were all very nice, the bathrooms not bad at all. Initially we were put off by the massive pubcrush in the alley and street but the upstairs area was calm and totally pleasant. Great fish & chips!

Great outside space with plenty of tables and umbrellas. You need to place your order inside with bartender and they will bring your food/ drinks to the tables. Very friendly service.
Great place to have a drink outside while catching up with friends!

Great old spacious pub, enjoyed the football the other day, felt safe and pleasant environment. Manager is friendly and very accommodating. Able to book a table the other month because the venue can be very busy. Good food & well ordered venue.
B. C.
Nice seating outside and good selection of beers. Orders through an app. Ideal for a pre-dinner drink if you're going to borough market.
A. P.
Lovely old pub set underneath the shard.Great service and good beer..lively..
G. A.
This large pub set back from Borough High St has a typical old London pub feel and it serves good drinks but for me it always too busy on a Thursday night. They do serve food but I have yet to try the restaurant. The seating area outside is also pleasant.
M. K.
Good cider and fish and chips, cozy atmosphere
J. M.
Standard Greene King pub with London prices for food and drink. Good location and nice outside space
R.
I visit The George regularly with my clients to celebrate the history and show it's relation to early theatre in London. Rachel's cab tours.

Found this pub from across the courtyard at The Heeltap and was glad I ventured over. The building is full of character and the beer selection is good and priced really well.
The whole place comes into it's own when the sun is shining though. There's plenty of seating outside but it does get busy and there's a cool balcony which is perfect for people watching
J. S.
Traditional pub with outdoor seating and a solid food menu. Local brew on tap, the George Inn Ale, is a pleasant pint. Good atmosphere and a large bar area. Well worth a visit - just down the lane off the main road.
R. B.
Historic, spacious pub. Food is decent for the price and good range of beers on tap and in the fridge. You won't miss the masive outdoor seating space which is a huge plus but do look out for the balcony which is a nice touch.
D. G.
Great place, nice big courtyard, patient and helpful staff.
A.
Love this pub, just across the road from Borough Market and tucked away. Does awesome food and great selection of beer. Can get really busy but rock up early and establish a spot
D. T.
A busy pub in this lively part of London I was a solo business traveller but found a cosy corner. Good selection of real ales and standard gastro pub fare. Staff pleasant attentive but not intrusive. Nice atmosphere
R. R.
Fun pub very cool atmosphere and good drink selection. Very interesting history about the place. The only bad experience I had was having my phone pickpocketed while waiting in line for a beer. This would be 5 stars but I was disappointed in how the staff handled the situation when I alerted security and the bartenders. They took a very blase attitude and shrugged as though this kind of thing always happened. While I don't blame the establishment in anyway I wish they had been more helpful when we asked to look at the CCTV footage. A police report was lodged so maybe they'll be more helpful if the police ask.

Fab historical pub and good beers. Atmosphere great but noisy so not an intimate venue but don't let that put you off. Well worth a visit! 👍😁
P. M.
Great outdoor seating area for drinks in the summer time. Didn't have food but everything that came out looked really good. Ideal place to meet with a large group of friends.
E. R.
This pub has everything. Cosy intimate dining options, big screen outside for sports and shouting, separate function room for private parties. Wonderful menu, reasonably priced and friendly staff. Not something easy to find in London. Traditional British pub. Loved it!
E. R.
One of the best pub I've ever tried in London. The building is amazing, really old and mantains its original vibe. The staff is really nice and welcoming, really old style (in a nice way). The dishes are amazing and very traditiona. Even the selection of beers and drink is nice. I had a pie and it was really hand made, and the sunday roast looked really appealing, as well. The desserts were really good and presented in a great way. The place seems huge, the prices are on the average. I will go back there for sure.
D. K.
Lovely historical place where coaches with horses used to settle down for a tipple. Menu isn't vast but the hustle and bustle atmosphere of the busy outdoor area together with cosyness and warmth of the warm historic interiors make this a great choice for a drink
L. C.
A beautiful old pub located just off London Bridge station. If you go here most of the time its a lovely chilled place to have a pint or some food but on weekend evenings a bit of a party atmosphere can be found in the outdoor area that is a load of fun!
N. A.
Tuck away down a side street, just off Borough Market this is a pub that is steeped in history. It's a beautiful building and worth visiting just to view the architecture. It's a traditional old pub, with a great atmosphere, albeit you tend to pay a little more for your drinks. Recommend.
R. F.
Went for work Xmas lunch, if it wasn't for that then my previous experiences there wouldn't have tempted me back as, like other reviewers, my previous experiences of the pub on summer evenings has seen it rammed to the gunwales.Definitely somewhere you go for the atmosphere rather than the food and drink!
Main course was much larger than expected with generous helping of meat and potatoes though the Yorkshire pudding was stone cold. Limited choice of desserts but this may have been because it was the fixed Xmas menu; either way, they were nothing special and screamed "bought in from wholesaler" rather than made on site.
Staff were pleasant and helpful and service was swift. The restaurant and bar were nice and quiet but I suspect this was due to it being the middle of a damp winter day.
Definitely worth a visit once in your life for the atmosphere, after that your mileage may vary.

Lovely old coaching inn owned by the national trust. Several rooms across two floors to hide away in, good range of ales including one brewed for the pub. Huge beer garden with a great view of the shard!
T. M.
If you are visiting London or live and work nearby The George Inn is a must visit for a busy and vibrant pub experience. It is well staffed with the team working hard to make sure that the customers are looked after. The food menu is good too.
J. C.
Fantastic atmosphere. Great yard and interiors. We went for dinner on a friday night. Beer was good. Food was average to poor. Lamb shank was perfectly good. Pork belly was not roasted to a crispy top, and was pretty awful. Roast beef was very mediocre too. However the apple crumble and sticky toffee pudding were both fantastic. Would definitely go back for a pint or two.
G. L.
Been a few years since I've frequented this traditional, historic pub and nothing much has changed. Friendly staff and reasonably priced good food, so a great evening with mates.

This is, on my opinion one of Londons gems. This is a fantastic place to watch rugby on the TV when the six nation's is on (just remember your coats as it's winter) but with the upcoming rugby world cup, they are showing all live games in the courtyard. If the atmosphere is like it is for six nations rugby then get yourself down for a fun and excitement whilst watching England (and other nations) battle it out this September. However if you love a good beer then pop in anyway I the week as they do this really week too! Off for another pint, find me at the bar!
S. S.
Good pub with large outdoor seating area, that has improved over the years. There is some limited seating inside, plenty of you're eating. Usually a few guest cask ales on top of the standard fare. Can get very busy at peak times, making getting served a pain in the cramped bar areas.
A. K.
Lovely old building with an outdoor area which is great in the summer. The bar can get very packed and the doors are narrow and have lots of little steps so this is not an accessible pub. The food is good - traditional British pub food, burgers, hotdogs and sharing platters. A small but selection of beer and usually a few interesting beers on draught.

We visited The George Inn on our Dickensian themed pub crawl, it is a beautiful pub and it went really well with our theme as Charles Dickens apparently used to drink here (when it was a coffee shop), there is a big courtyard outside with loads of tables to soak up the sun on a summer’s day! They have a good selection of beers as you would expect from a green Kings pub. It is a very touristy pub, so it gets very busy. Worth a visit to soak up some history and get away from modern London.
M. “. O. K.
Fairly average pub but what makes it a delight is the huge courtyard seating area outside, which appears to be shared with a bar opposite. Handy if someone in your group prefers wine or cocktails.
Service was OK, staff seemed fairly disinterested and I had to interrupt a conversation between staff, complaining about a colleague being lazy(?), in order to ask that I be served.
P. P. P.
Very, very busy pub. Wonderfully lively atmosphere to enjoy with friends. Indoors you can feel the history emanating from the walls. Outdoors enjoy the chill of a winter's evening. Cloak and Dagger tour leaves of an evening at 7.30pm - book to be on it!
R. W.
Great selection of beers, lovely food and the decor is just brilliant. The place has a lovely warming, old fashioned feel to it. Highly recommended
M. G.
Came across the George by happy accident, turned the corner on a rainy day searching for somewhere to have food and drink. What a wonderful pub, like stepping back in time, downstairs a bustling bar, upstairs a cozy but large area to rest and enjoy the most well presented delicious food at reasonable prices. Outside a large area with table heating, if it wasn't raining was also a delight, with hanging baskets and the history of the pub there to read, William Shakespeare also frequently made a stop here, and why not. I will definitely be going back.
a. F.
Nice staff, ambiance and reasonable prices
A. L.
The George is the place to go when you show your friends around. They claim to be the oldest pub in London and it just looks like it. Old wooden tables and bar. They have lots of tables outside so it’s easy to find a place to sit, but placing an order at the bar can take some time as only two people can fit behind the counter. Friendly staff though, perfect in the weekend!
K. M.
History behind the place is terrific (last galleried coaching inn according to wikipedia). House ale hits the spot after a long day of walking. Food is only ok, standard pub menu. I was recommended the place by a local. Great indoor outdoor seating areas.
N. B.
Not the cheapest beer in town but historic and very well worth a visit.
L. T.
Not been to a carvery for a long time so this was almost a new experience. Menu was good and a wide variety of food on offer. Service was a little slow because it was very busy, but our waitress was friendly, polite and delivered our food correctly. All together a good experience.
L. C.
Former coaching inn near Borough market. App for ordering drinks and food. Friendly and helpful staff
r. c.
Tucked down a side street this place is a gem an old school pub that holds a lot of history. Reasonable prices for the area. The food was average but still very tasty with good menu choices. Good selection of craft beers and IPA.
R. J.
I really like this pub, have been here several times. During the day it's a great place for pub lunch and it has loads of seating. There's also an outside terrace with tables, outside bar and gas lamps to keep you warm on chilli evenings.
J. S.
Been here twice in the last 2 months and was very impressed on both visits, once with 12 people and again with 4. Food is good pub food with quite a varied choice,we ate in the gallery bar on both occasions and staff were very helpful, especially one lady. The food was of an excellent standard,at a very reasonable price. The beer was also of an excellent standard, with a very good local beer. My only small criticism is that there is a small selection of puddings, but dont let that put you off. The building alone is steeped in character and atmosphere and an excellent place for all the family to enjoy, or an evening out with friends!
C. B.
This pub has a lot of history and was a regular hangout of Shakespeare's back in the day apparently. It has managed to preserve its style very well and is a must see spot for anyone interested in London's old pubs. It has a very large courtyard with heaters for the winter months and the atmosphere is always buzzing there. well worth a visit any day of the week
P. B.
Top class service from Mike and the team. Thanks to Tom for booking us in outside, absolutely fantastically well looked after.
M. M.
Lots of outdoor seating and they are fairly well priced for london. Good beer selection on tap and they do bar snacks. Very busy on a weekend so try and visit during the week if you want a seat.
F. V.
Great place. On my top five list in London.
T. B.
One of the coolest oldest pubs in London. Amazing food and a wicked outdoor patio. A must see if you like drinking paired with history, or food.
d. b.
A quality act! purported to be the oldest ale house in London,
It is a galleried multi room pub with tangible sense of history.
Good food menu at reasonable prices, and seating outside (heated
in winter) in large courtyard. Though I just had soft drinks and a bite,
a range of ales etc. were on offer, this is a memorable pub.
D. G. M.
The George Inn is London's last galleried coaching inn and a true gem of a building. Serving great tasting food, that can be washed down with an impressive range of drinks, this inn has gone on to become one of my favourite watering holes. Spread across three floors, which you are free to explore, you can really soak up the history of the place. The staff are friendly and very knowledgeable and make everyone feel welcome. Outside there is a cobbled courtyard with more seating and, during the better weather, a large TV screen is usually installed here. The George Inn is a National Trust building.
S. H.
I love this pub, I have been going here for years great for dates and with large groups of friends. It is cosy, full of history dating back to Chaucer. With a large beer garden and has a good selection this is a lovely pub. Although drinks are on the pricey side.
J. R.
They replaced the patio heaters with hot water bottles... As usual extremely accomodating but bring back the patio heaters!!!!! Still wouldn't go elsewhere.
B. C.
Great old coaching inn. Historic.
D. K.
Popular pub for tourists and local workers alike, claiming to be haunted and one of the oldest pubs in London. Large courtyard for al fresco dining & drinking (if weather permits) and just a short walk from Borough Market and London Bridge station. Separate bar upstairs too and lots of seating BUT very popular at peak times so be prepared to stand.
G. F.
Very nice very old English pub. Traditional old-style inside incl outside seating area, even in Winter (heaters). Crowds are made up of local workers, students from nearby King's College and tourists. Extremely busy Thu and Fri.
M.
A great authentic old pub.
M. F.
Owned by the National Trust, but tenanted this ancient terraced pub was mentioned by Dickens, and you can imagine stepping back in time inside. Good beer, nice big sitting area outside, good food and historic terraced restaurant. Worth a visit, just across from Borough Markets.
S. C.
Very old great feel about the place fabulous wine
S. W.
Great relaxing and atmospheric pub that's super old and really fun. Had my 30th birthday party there and it was a great place for it, plus hey had a live Irish band which was cool.
A. I.
Nice pub with lots of character, charm and decent beer. The interior has a quirky layout with lots of different rooms serving beer. Good size outside space too.
V. L.
Amazing pub because of its history. Very poor choice of pub if you want to have a drink. In total 4 bar tenders serving 20 outside tables - the result, be prepared to wait 25 - 40 min to order drinks (twice tonight so far)... Have so much more time to write more for this review, but will save your time :)
L. P. B.
Historic pub with good selection of ales
P. R.
Great staff, not much social distancing. Good outdoor beer garden.
J. D.
I've been to The George hundreds
of times and it's ALWAYS a right pain to get served. Seriously, you can easily wait 15 minutes in a queue and see people served before you out of turn. However it is a unique venue and worth a visit, especially amongst the weird dross around London Bridge and north end of Borough High Street. It is genuinely old and the only one of its kind in this area of London.
R. B.
Nice pub and very busy
L. S.
Came here right around 5PM one day and it WAS PACKED. But even so I got a drink very quickly and found a seat in one of the many many many rooms upstairs in the winding building. Friendly customers, staff, and a neat little area off the main road.
B. D.
Steeped in history, I love this place. A haunt for Charles!
Look at the pub, just don't look behind you!
G.
Nice old pub in a cool secret nook. Had the buffalo chicken and fried halloumi platter, it was very good! Large outdoor area, didn’t go upstairs, would visit again.
J. L.
Brilliant pub in London Bridge. One of the oldest in London, it is owned by the National Trust and serves trendy hoppy beers; a fantastic combo. Large outdoor courtyard area too so you can stand outside in the summer.
i. K.
Near to London Bridge and always quite busy. Sat outside the entire visit so don't know what the inside or staff are like.
s. f.
Only had drinks. They had a wide variety and service was prompt.
L. B.
Good layout, easy to get served, friendly bar staff
g. w.
Good beer, but very busy
A. C.
Lovely olde worlde pub. Inside is small but perfectly formed. Huge cobbled courtyard outside which was perfect for a summers evening. Buzzy atmosphere outside but cool and calm inside. Food was good and portions were generous if typically overpriced for the area. Worth a visit.
I. I.
The first floor seating area was super empty at 5pm (just for us!), thoroughly 17th century vibe! William would be happy to come here 450 years after and see the same quality fish and chips!
A. H.
Good food, plenty of space inside and out. We had a room booked for board games. It's got an old school feel and is one of the last pubs of its type in the capital city. Very recommended
