Reviews of Hope & Anchor
Proper venue pub, friendly bar staff, nice choice of IPA’s if you like the flavoured hipster juices 😂
Some top bands have played here good spot
Can't go wrong with this lively place; check out the gig list!
Corner bar on Upper Street, 5 min walk from Highbury & Islington tube. Refurbished and much lighter looking. Good beer selection and decent wine for a pub. Music pub with bands on regularly downstairs - as its a basement venue can get …
Small average pub , live music was enjoyable and the food was was good .
Pretty nice traditional pub - one of the cheaper ones on Upper Street. Standard pub food and nothing to blow the doors off. The staff make the place - always very friendly.
Great atmosphere especially on Friday Saturdays live music and jukebox with a list of nostalgic songs also live theatre upstairs good food good fun enjoy guys
Good pub small venue downstairs not badly priced beer
A very historic live music venue, it's quite small but has a good atmosphere
Iconic venue always enjoy my time there see some great bands downstairs to
Good, friendly service in main bar & downstairs in the venue - relaxed atmosphere also
Great venue, good beer and a fun live room.
Be warned though, it for 40 minutes for them to cook my food order (just some fries!)
Very decent corner pub with good range of local beers on tap.
Great pub
Nice friendly pub with small venue downstairs and small theatre upstairs. Reasonable prices for London
Great place to grab a pint, not to busy in the afternoons! Good beer and good service!
Saw many bands here and was almost mugged for my jacket , year was 1982 so it may have changed a little..band was Ten Pole Tudor and gig was wunderbar up to that point.....
This place is quite renowned for its concert cellar and we saw a Siouxsie and the Banshees tribute band. So, London!
Nice atmosphere still hold live music, band's downstairs Mike
Good pub, nice selection of beers and an influential punk venue.
Run of the mill boozer, fills the gap in your Upper Street pub crawl. Staff are friendly and the beer selection is good
Popped by on a Saturday night and it took ages to get served. Luckily for me I enjoyed the music they played, but doubt I'll be rushing to return unless there's a gig on.
My green space which is quiet, free of cars & CO2. I excersize here 5 morning a week, weather permitting, dogs owner do pick up their poos . Place is clean & safe. Favour by sun seekers..... love it😀😃😄
Nice pub but can be very loud...not best if you just want to talk and drink beer
Great burgers !
Watched the footy and had a great time with cheap drinks which is never an issue. Will be back here again id say
And if you ever come across us don't give us your sympathies you can buy us a drink or just shake our hands and you'll recognise the reflection in our eyes that deep down inside we'll all one and the same
Sometimes good sometimes great. Jukebox with a lot of variety, live music, nice staff, well located.
Great pub, friendly bartenders. Can't wait to go there again!
Great pub, really good jukebox. Location on Upper Street is fantastic.
Popular on theatre nights. Friendly staff with a decent selection on tap
decent gig venue, does a nice pint of Camden Pale!
Good prices, friendly quick service. Quite small so not much seating but good crowd inside.
Brilliant pub and small venue. Plenty of drinks choices. Music venue in basement is a great size, and sound quality was good. Only lost one star because the air conditioning wasn't working when we visited (As December Falls, Feb 2020) and it was ridiculously hot! Otherwise would highly recommend.
Great night's here, nice people, good food and live music down stairs
Good, spacious bar. Best for leaving do or after work drinks.
The music downstairs is still a great venue the pub upstairs is a bit tired .
Nice place and good atmosphere
Great food and good selection of beers. Slow service though
Played a gig there. Excellent venue, friendly staff, cool vibe!!
Great little venue with good range of beers
Nice pub ,good venue for gigs , Expensive Beer
Pretty good, not quite as crowded as other Upper Street pubs/bars/clubs.
A perfect humble pub... with a few bits of rock history attached.
A fabulous pub with a good buzzy atmosphere, friendly bar staff, where you're always served quickly. Also there is a theatre space upstairs showing great productions.
Good pub with both music and theater space.
Decent pub for a Friday night with plenty of seating.
Great Bar. Plenty of characters old theatre upstairs.
Food good staff polite and friendly good atmosphere the gig great.
Nice relaxed atmosphere and close to local gig venues
Nice staff but music too loud
Great venue, good bands usually. Recommended
Harry is the man, friendly and PRO. Good music policy
The best little known famous bar/club! Great sounds!!!!
An awesome place with great music and sometimes live performances
Fantastic place to visit for a drink and socialising with friends.
Or go downstairs, and rock out with live music! 🤟😁
Lovely staff, lovely food and good selection of beers 😎
Amazing service, lovely staff, good price!! Great theatre
Amazing, so much music history and the bartender is ...gorgeous!!!
Can't go wrong with this lively place; check out the gig list!
Good atmosphere, delicious ales, good music on the duke box.
Very, very good theatre and friendly bar staff
Some top bands have played here good spot
legendary nice place to go and relax and to hear and see great music
Busy Friday night crowd, great pictures and memorabilia on walls.
A nice little venue but a little expensive in the downstairs bar.
Pleasant London pub, great beer and ale selection, excellent meaty burgers and the Vegan options are great too!
Good Venue with live music in the basement and comedy upstairs.
Great little boozer. Famous Music venue
Nice little pub for before the Arsenal match
Best pub in Islington. Great jukebox
Great night of live music, great atmosphere.
The best place to meet your friends at evening. Friendly people. Thanks guys!!
STAFF ARE FRIENDLY EVEN WHEN EXTREMELY BUSY.
GREAT ATMOSPHERE. A GREAT PLACE TO HANG.
Friendly staff, range of ales, beware though, more than £5 per pint for some!
Wicked pub with fab music! Really cool and edgy
Great meal there, I recommend it, sincerely. Quiet expensive though...
Went to see Playmaker - great venue and sound - the sound man did a fantastic job, leaping about to adjust things and keep everything clear. Had a fab evening
Excellent food and live music
Good liveiy pub.Good beer!
Brilliant live music venue.
Good choice of beers and a decent-sized screen for sport
Good pub, bit slow on the food
A great venue and home to Loud Women.
Excellent little live music venue!
Nice, clean but lost its edge now has as London
Great pub with live room upstairs. Always something going on. Staff very friendly. Always pop in here when meeting up with friends if in area.
Great selection of beers on tap.
Historic live music venue - defines the Dive Bar - great atmosphere.
Great atmosphere
Live music, jukeboxing contests, theater, beers. What more could we ask for ?
Cracking selection of askes, think the citrus-y ones are definitely the best tho...
great vibes and brilliant live music monthly
Top venue played there in 1980.😎.🎩.🕶.👍.
Great venue for live music
Nice gigs. Good beer.
Great live music downstairs.
Not too pricey. Did not try the food
Awesome place to meet-up,
Legendary venue, but also a great pub. Decent beer range and really friendly staff. Always a good mix of people in there too, represented well in the diverse tunes blurting from the Duke Box (Madonna to Metallica back to back 😂🤘🏼). Great haven from the predictable circuit of most of Upper Street.
Very tasty. Good staff too
Food was nice and so was the beer
Nice and clean. Friendly staff and very roomy .
Great service and good music.
Great venue for bands!😈
Staff is kind. Trooper porter was okay. Large selection.
Great intimate gig venue
Solid G and T. Good outdoor space
Great bands and pub
It's a fine little pub
Great pub, great staff, fantastic night out
Had an awesome night watching the Amazing Molly Karloff, Raze and Screaming Irene. This is a good little music bar, ( Bands play downstairs) So brilliant to see live music coming back 🎸🥁🍺🤘🖤
Great venue
Brilliant bar, very welcoming
Fast, good, cheap, delicious. ❤️ This place
Great live music venue
Great venue for gigs.
rock and roll relic. staff is kind and beer is cold. #winning
Not a bad place to stop for a swift one
Great friendly pub
Fantastic music and great banter
Brought back a few memories...
Old style London pub. Good selection of drinks. Friendly staff.
Bloody marvellous place the chap that owns is a right hoot!!!
Does what it says on the tin. Good for a few with friends

Legendry music venue. Still working.

Wonderful atmosphere, friendly staff, great drinks, delicious food.
What a place!
Great place for a gig
Great live music!!!
Very loud
Good beer and music
Classic venue, still going.
Great place for a drink
Great pub..
Play there again any time
Legendary music venue
Good for live music
A proper pub with lots of comedy nights, in the basement theatre.
Famous punk venue
What a jolly good place
Amazing pub
Just fine.
Happy hour
What a brilliant place!
Great place!
Great beers
Great
Good little place here
Lovely staff, great food and drink but most importantly a superb place to see live music, went and saw Rockaway Beach on Friday evening, outstanding night
Nice boozer
Good selection of pints here although we had to stand up as it was busy here shortly after an Arsenal game. Some dude came up to me and said I looked like the tinder swindler as well which I later discovered was not a compliment at all
Great pub. Good atmosphere
Perfect ambience perfect Guinness. Enough said
Unexpectedly good bar with great underground music. The only drawback is that the concert hall and bar space are separate. And the big minus, which takes away one star, is that the bartenders-waiters could pay more attention to the customers. Because while we were waiting for the concert, he never came to ask us what we would like to order.
Very good place to go listen to good music and have a beer.
A wide variety of beers and ales
Beautiful.
Great place and friendly staff!
legendary nice place to go and relax and to hear and see great music
Lovely lady served us a beautiful pint in a great pub.History galore in here.
great venue, great bands, lovely staff. Love the Rockaway Beach nights, always a fab crowd ⭐
What a pub. Great beers, great tunes that you can play on the juke box, and an unparrallelled atmosphere.
Saw local japanese musicians play at this venue. Very small but great view of the stage
Great atmosphere, plus good burger and pint. Enjoyed it !!
Nice place. I ordered a lemonade and the price was fair.
The Hope theatre is the best part, small and intimate.
Amazing pub. Superb shows for theatre lovers and a good night out!!
Great gig venue downstairs and great pub upstairs x
Had a great time, very artsy space but I didn’t get the drinks or food as I was there for a play so I can’t talk about those
Lovely service , great prices for drinks.
Beautiful little quaint theatre upstairs.
Lovely pub, knowledgeable staff, great guest and local ales. A couple of hundred meters from Islington assembly rooms.
Decent pint and probably great when live music is on
Great spit and sawdust music venue the way pubs used to be
Great
Great Slade tribute band
SLADY
Well kept and served beer and a good music experience made for a totally unexpected fine night out.
It's a really cool place to go to to see a gig. As I am a photographer I'm constantly going there to take pictures of bands. It has a good atmosphere the space is just a little tight down stairs. But over all I would recommend you going there to have a drink or to see a gig. You would have a good night out. The staff are friendly too, which always helps.
Cool pub venue to get up close to bands. Fewer and fewer of these survive so the Hope & Anchor deserves support. Good beer on taps and easy to get to in Islington by bus or tube.
What a place for live music. James and his team are fantastic.
Perfect before and after gig pub.
Great gigs down below. We saw Pink Haze play here with their new guitarist! Then four years later I played there and now we're boominn!!
Great pub/venue which has a stage downstairs. Good selection if beers and friendly staff. They also have small theatre there. Would recommend trying some of the different beers they have on draft as they have a great selection. Also have a quiz night there as well on tuesdays.
Decent pub - needs to be good as there is so much competition round here. Nice big corner site, good bar but not so keen on all the high stools and tables. Range of beers, something for everyone. There is food, which looks like standard, if expensive stuff. Probably nicer when quieter, on Saturday evening you get Arsenal fans, then punk fans for downstairs music venue - but they are all elderly now, so quite harmless. Small theatre upstairs. This pub has LOTS of history in London Rock & Punk music scene.
Nice corner pub with friendly staff, food is okay.
Theatre pub, as well as having live music (U2 and Madness played there decades ago). It is a great place for fringe theatre as well as live bands - Google, please add the Theatre to the description. And the jukebox in the main bar is very cool (rock, indie, punk, 70s, 80s).
Corner bar on Upper Street, 5 min walk from Highbury & Islington tube. Refurbished and much lighter looking. Good beer selection and decent wine for a pub. Music pub with bands on regularly downstairs - as its a basement venue can get rather hot. Friendly staff and nice atmosphere except the music which is way too loud upstairs in the bar.
Not your classic Greene King! Decor is more hipsterish (Edison light bulbs, bare brick walls, furniture made out of old wood and metal pipes) which gives it more of a Brewdog ambiance but with cheaper beer and a more local indie crowd. Staff is very amiable and their eclectic music taste (lots of metal interspaced with the cheesiest pop tunes you could dream of) will surely add a bit of pepper to your night. They also have a basement stage where you'll find gigs every weekend so you can help support your local scene!
What a brilliant little gem. We sat outside in the sunshine, then decided to have food here. Absolutely the best decision of the day. I had the veggy spicy burger, probably the best veggy burger ice ever eaten. Hubby had the sausage mash and onion gravy which was delicious. There is a little theatre upstairs and downstairs live music. Staff are really friendly and there is plenty of starting. A definite must if your wandering around Islington
Great pub. As a musician it's always great going to legendary places like this too. Great staff and not the usual hideous London prices!
Nice pub, especially the small cosy basement where a lot of good music acts perform. Saw Scant Regard there, the Chinelli Bros with Giles Robson, all top musicians, so it's nice to still have some venues left in London that provide this sort of space
Iconic intimate music/theatre venue with plenty of atmosphere, but visitors should note that means stairs, so not accessible to all. Ground floor bar is accessible, but all toilets are upstairs or downstairs.
Fairly tidy-looking inside, this is just a standard pub these days (not as run-down as it was a few years ago). There wasn't a band playing on Saturday night, so it was nice & relaxing to go for a quick drink on our way home after having dinner elsewhere.
Such an important place in the history of modern music. Along with great bar food and a good range of drinks makes this a place that deserves at least 30 minutes of your time for a drink.
As a first timer here having driven past thousands of times I'm surprised I've not seen downstairs but then i didnt know about it! The acoustics are good and it is very band focussed, well equipped for recording sessions from live and private gigs, booze prices seem about the average for london!!
Really good pub and venue, nice pints and not too expensive. The lower level, where the stage is, is a bit small and claustrophobic, especially if packed, but the stage and sound are good.
Good selection of spirits at great prices for a gig venue.
Fab Place to see live music!
Rockaway Beach is a great night to get to,
With Timmy DeRella spinning top punk vinyl on the decks & 3 punk bands all for £10 on the door! Great sound in there, cosy venue with freindly people!
Iconic London pub. Many great pop bands started here, steeped in history. Excellent beer as well.
Great duke box... enjoyed playing songs by bands who've played there, like U2, Specials, Madness, The Stranglers to name but afew. Have lots of bands playing now adays too but they were only warming up before I left.
Absolutely amazing bar. Good music and great atmosphere, decent selection of beer. And the bar maid with the plum red hair is stunning.
I've only ever been here as my mate was in a band, so my review is based on the fact it was an amazing place to go for that, small venue, good drinks and friendly staff.
If you are looking for places to go for gigs, this I assume will have loads to go to!
The Best Service 👌
Im spend My last money for enjoying ...
Top of Top Barman
I go to here , occasionally , to attend a gig in the basement . The pub upstairs is expensive , compared to the Wetherspoons nearer Highbury and Islington underground station , but not as crowded. There's also a theatre above the bar near the toilets.
Ok, spacious and has a gig venue in basement and theatre upstairs. Had like six beer pumps- every single one of them off by 8pm on a Thursday.
Brilliant traditional pub. Good selection of beers. Very friendly. Definitely recommended.
Nice pub.. Bit strange that a toastie to be ready on time before the play started couldnt be confirmed. We went hungry. Think it might be time to join up the theatre and kitchen dots.
Fun and friendly staff, inviting place with good jukebox
Really awesome venue. Both choice of live music and live theatre on the same night, and some great beer. Camden Pale ale - great.
Just been to see The Men That Will Not Be Blamed For Nothing downstairs. Great gig in a small room that only holds 75 people, though the PA system needs to be louder!
Not my cup of tea. Looks dirty and trashy.
Great friendly music venue. Great selection of ales. Great atmosphere and venue for bands downstairs. Friendly and helpful bar staff that helpful that Alexi that works behind the bar was able to help me when I got an earplug stuck in my ear. Was panicking a bit but soon sorted. Many thanks.
Average quality boozer. Decent selection of beers on top, staff are friendly, wouldn't say the atmosphere is great. Music is good fun after a few though
Iconic boozer, theatre upstairs, live music in the basement.
Pretty nice traditional pub - one of the cheaper ones on Upper Street. Standard pub food and nothing to blow the doors off. The staff make the place - always very friendly.
Great comfortable pub with a happy atmosphere and great staff serving lovely beers! Oh and some legendary bands have played here😆
Ok bar with gigs downstairs in the basement. They didn't serve beer in the downstairs bar. The sound was not great, a bit too loud and not very crisp and clean.
Still retains a bit of that old aura. Has always been a great pub and venue. Staff are friendly and you still get a few characters in there.
Great atmosphere especially on Friday Saturdays live music and jukebox with a list of nostalgic songs also live theatre upstairs good food good fun enjoy guys
Great venue . Historic music venue.
Good pub which also sells coffee and is well known that the Stranglers played there many times, some good "Punk" posters from the early days of punk rock
This place has been refurbished recently so the photos need updating badly!! It's a very good local pub now win friendly staff and good selection of beer.
Great gig venue downstairs, beneath decent pub.
It's actually really nice in there! Everyone's friendly, the music is great and the atmosphere is comforting. Will definitely be back to sample the food.
Great music venue and super lovely staff! Gotta keep supporting the live music scene and keep awesome places like this open!
Great pub and live venue, I've many of my friends bands play live here.
Nice music, nice crowd, however the service is very very slow!!! Have to wait from 30 minutes to 1 hour to get drinks on Saturday night.
Good buzz on a Friday night
Was here in feb for as December falls good venue , air con was playing up but short term . Great staff
Fantastic pub with a great music venue downstairs were some of the best bands have played. Check out Wikipedia.
Busy small pub. Studio Theatre upstairs. Nice venue but scruffy. They have some good plays o here
Good selection,, basement bar was closed on a busy gig though so you have to go up to the bar up a nardow staircase. Sound was on, sounded like one speaker was blown though.
Great venue for live shows. Stunning PA. Excellent crew and good choice of beers too.
The staff are incredibly friendly & the prices are quite reasonable.
My -1* is due to the lack of disabled access, the entry points are quite narrow with steps. This isn't accessable for a wheelchair user unless you sit outside.
I was here for an event that was taking place in the basement (I wasn't aware of this prior to arriving), I managed to get down the flight of stairs which was quite narrow but was limited to remaining here as the staircase was too narrow & busy to keep holding everyone up to keep going up & down.
👌
Legendary London gig venue still going strong. Almost everyone has played here on their way up including the Pirates, Damned, U2, Dire Straights, Dr Feelgood ....
Too loud. Tries too hard yet not hard enough.
Good atmosphere, drinks are reasonably priced and the live music on that night downstairs was awesome
Great bar, nice selection of beers (could do with a cider on tap though)
Great beer selection
A legendary Pub, known for its live acts .
Ok, spacious and has a gig venue in basement and theatre upstairs. Had like six beer pumps- every single one of them off by 8pm on a Thursday.
Decent selection of ales and really friendly and helpful staff. Only was in there for the Varukers gig, but I hope to be back.
Saw my friends band play here, was a lovely venue, sound was great and staff were friendly.
Basement venue for bands is brilliant - would give five but whilst food and beer upstairs is good quality and staff working hard the place was struggling to deliver what they take orders for. We waited over 45 mins for the full order but had to go downstairs otherwise we'd have missed the band - information on food progress was reactive and inaccurate.
