Reviews of Lechevalier Wine Bar & Shop
P. P.
I was taken here for my birthday and it was a lovely surprise. The range and quality of the wine and food on offer was excellent and the service was incredibly attentive and knowledgeable.
We had a great time!
N. M.
A friend told me it was a great place for dating. So I went there last week.
The owner sensed I was nervous and made it so easy for me to relax.
The staff recommended some great wines by the glass, and the cheeses were excellent. Perfect date as well.
C.
Wonderful experience at Lechevalier wine bar, it exceeded our expectations, we came out of the bar not only a little tipsy but also much more knowledgeable about wine and different grapes. the staff and owner were incredibly helpful and kind - in short I really recommend this place, price/ wine/ experience quality is excellent.
l. c.
Lovely wine, cured meat and vegetarian tartiflette. Wine choice is amazing and staff very knowledgeable and prices very affordable considering produce quality. Really unexpected place on Tower Bridge Rd but a very pleasant surprise.
G. J.
Every time we come here the service is incredible and every member of staff goes above and beyond. There is no pretence whatsoever and we are always made to feel welcome. To top it off I learn something new on each visit. Thoughtful and passionate buying produces a diverse and exciting wine list, accompanied by great cheese and charcuterie. I fear the secret is already out, and hope I can still get a table in the future!

Wonderful wine bar recommended by a local friend of mine, truly a hidden gem 💎 Perfect for a night out with friends or a date. The staff were super friendly and helpful, felt like I was in someone's home rather than a restaurant. Bonus, the wine and cheese are absolutely delicious! Highly recommend when in Bermondsey.
F. K.
The best wine bar south of the river without question - fantastic selection of unusual and interesting wines as well as cheese and charcuterie to accompany it. Christophe shares his wealth of knowledge generously and we always leave having learnt something new. Can't recommend highly enough.
R. O.
I had the pleasure of popping into Lechevelier at the weekend. The place was lovely well stocked and Christophe was everything! Friendly, knowledgeable, and full of amazing stories. Ended up recommending the most amazing cheese I haven’t been able to stop eating. I can’t wait to go head back and sit down next weekend!
L. D.
Fantastic service! Owner seemed so knowledgable about everything to do with wine. Really appreciated the time he took with me to explain through their selection. Even took the time to allow us to taste a few from their bar. Can’t wait to come back with friends to their bar, which looks soooo buzzy on a Friday night!

Great place to visit for wines to take away or to enjoy a glass or two on site. Really interesting selection of wines by the glass. In general an approach to wine which shows a passion and curiosity, but not an obsession with trends — some things natural, some minimal intervention wines, some biodynamic. Lovely range of cheeses and meats to go with the food. And a very friendly and knowledgeable team.

A must! Visited Lechevalier regularly, each time I really enjoyed the atmosphere and the chat with the people who work there. Fantastic conversations, everyone shares their passion about quality and care about what they serve.
Has a deli part of the store and a eat in section. It's one of those wonderful places you will eat at the bar and then take some extra home from the deli.
Great service, delicious food and the wine complements. A must try! Just remember, pop by with 60 to 90 mins free, relax, enjoy. Such places are rare in London.
Highly, highly recommend.

Lechevalier is a glowing gem on lower Tower Bridge Road. The shop has an array of delectable cheeses, charcuterie, bread, and
eclectic wines. The customer service is superb!
K. W.
A slice of heaven on Earth! Regardless of what you eat (wine, cheese, meats, tomatoes), it will be the best of its class. Christophe and Lucie provide the best customized wine recommendations and are a ray of sunshine to our week. The store is very clean and mindful of social distancing and safety precautions. So grateful to have a local shop that provides exquisite cheeses and is building a safe, sustainable future of in-shop dining during this time.

There aren’t enough wine bars in London! So it was great to find Lechevalier wine bar in Bermondsey offering over 120 bottles of wine with bread, charcuterie and cheese. The wine bar was founded by Christophe Lechevalier, who helped establish Artisan Foods in 2000 and sold wine at Borough Market for more than 15 years.
As you enter Lechevalier, you can see all of the bottles on display on offer as well as the fresh produce. You can also purchase a branded glass bottle for £2.50 and refill from one of the six wine taps ranging from £8-12.
There are a number of stools along the bar to be in the centre of everything which is where we sat. For a little more privacy, there are a few tables at the back.
Christophe’s years of experience have paid off in this venture and his knowledge and enthusiasm shine through. We started off with a few tastings so we could become familiar with the menu (although note it does change regularly).
There a wide selection of wines by the glass set out in price order for each section – sparkling, pink, white, orange, red and sweet. The menu helpfully highlights in bold important information including the name and grape type and then includes more detail (the region, country and year) for those who are keen to understand more.
We could not resist trying some of the fine cheeses with our wine. We started off with a Mix Sourdough & Olive Oil (£3) from Hackney . The three different pieces of sourdough were so fresh and paired well with olive oil. We also had the Mix Almonds Marcona & Smoked from Spain (£3) which were very moreish!
We tucked into:
- London Raclette: Unpasteurised cow’s milk, served cold with Pear, ale and date chutney, produced in Bermondsey (£5.5)
- Parmigiano: Unpasteurised cow’s milk aged 24 months served with balsamic vinegar, produced in Emilia Romagna, Italy (£4.5)
- Boffard Curado: Unpasteurised cow & sheep’s milk, aged for 4 months (during which it has been oiled 3 times with olive oil to give it its unique taste) produced in Castilla & Leon region of Spain. Served with Red onions marmalade made in Bermondsey (£6).
These cheeses were absolutely AMAZING. The parmigiano was my favourite – crumbly and tasty, paired perfectly with the balsamic. I have never had cold raclette before but it impressed – it was quite a mild cheese so the chutney was a great accompaniment.
Lechevalier is a wonderful wine bar in Bermondsey offering a vast selection of wine and fresh produce. The setting is perfect for a date night or work event with wine tasting.
R. A.
Wine selection is abundant. Broad selection of Italian and French cheese. What we didn't like was that members of staff were a bit lost. When we asked for wine recommendation, the guy was writing down our preferences and in the end asked us to just check the menu which was pointless. I asked another member of staff to show me the cheese at the counter and he was looking for names by reading tags, clearly he had time to study them before. Overall it is a good bar with some improvement opportunities, including the bar's interior.
R. G.
Fantastic cheese, wine and meats.
Very lovely & friendly staff.
Outstanding produce is at the heart of of the offering here.
We enjoyed this beautiful rose pictured below.
A little background music for ambience would have been nice nevertheless, can't wait to return.
L. S.
Great experience! Really enjoyed the wine and cheese on offer. The staff were brilliant!
J. K.
Well worth the price. Amazing quality cheeses and meat selection. Together with sourdough break you are for a treat of a evening.
M. S.
This is now my favourite place. The wine list is so well curated. The cheese and charcuterie selection is superb. Service is knowledgable and efficient. I can only recommend it. See you guys very soon.
C. S.
6 stars. Amazing service , food and wine. Best customer service. Can’t recommend more.
C. K.
Amazing selection of unique wines and cheese with fantastic service. We had a great chat with Christophe, his passion and knowledge of wine shines through with good humour. He was happy to talk us through different wines, so we could explore the selection more and taste outside of our normal go to grapes.
We can't wait to come back and try more of the selection.
D. A.
Came here with some friends who live locally but have never been before. As so many reviews state, Le chevalier is a hidden gem. They have a beautiful range of wines for all tastes and the food quality is superb.
It is a cute venue with a sophisticated, whilst rough round the edges kind of vibe where you can feel relaxed and in good hands. The staff here are so knowledgeable about everything that they stock and once they get a sense of your palette... only god can help you and the calories you will consume but believe me it is worth it.
Having read some of the bad reviews (as so many people do) I would like to say to those people perhaps they should visit such establishments with a more open mind. Yes borough market has more selection and yes there are cheaper wines out there and other wine shops with what might appear to be better customer service but Le chevalier provides you with a personal and very upfront and honest experience. Not only can you enjoy some great produce here but you can also learn a thing a two about where it is sourced and how it is made. There is no fake upselling in disguise here.. and if honesty is an acquired taste for you, then perhaps you should grab a bottle of wine from sainsburys down the road...
r. c.
This place is a solid 4.8 stars. Good selection of wines and friendly chat and advice.
S. B.
Excellent wine, cheese, meat, bread, staff. Had a great time here last Saturday. The staff are really knowledgeable and friendly The portions are super generous too. One of my favourite places in our local area and as an added bonus it doulbles up as a shop!
Q. J.
Cute spot for wine & cheese in South London!
n. d.
This has to be the best charcuterie and cheese in London, backed up by superb wines and excellent knowledgeable service, if your near Tower Bridge it’s worth the short walk
P. B.
A fantastic selection of wines, ranging from the sublime to the downright unusual! The owner and staff are extremely knowledgeable and friendly, and won't hesitate to make a (no doubt excellent) recommendation based on your preferences.
Add in some excellent cheese and meat dishes available to snack on (try the lardo!) and you've got my favourite wine bar in London! :)
N. F.
I’ve been walking past Lechavalier on my way to work for the past six months or more. Decided to give it a go and I was not disappointed. A great selection of wines, cheeses and charcuterie, served by very knowledgable people. A lovely, cosy place where you can learn about good wine, often natural or biodynamic, in an informal setting. A few vegetarian options or salads would make this hard to beat. Highly recommended. A hidden gem that will soon be difficult to get into.
J. S.
Happened to stumble across Le Chevalier randomly off Bermondsey Street. A great place to grab a glass of wine. The proprietor was extremely helpful and friendly and definitely made the experience. We popped in just to check it out and ended up staying for a few glasses of wine! They have a real cool concept where you can fill up your own bottles of wine "on tap". Will definitely be coming back after just for this alone!
T. P.
Amazing customer service and atmosphere:) It is incredible how they make you feel as you are at home :) Thanks for this incredible experience for second time that it will not be the last. Well done guys :))
V. A.
Got a good recommendation for cheese (Raclette) here when I was visiting the area with a friend. I didn't know anything about cheese, but the guy was very friendly. Nice vibes in the shop too.
K. H.
I LOVE Lechavlier. Christophe and Lucie make such an effort to make people feel welcome. The wines are lovely, and you will always get a great recommendation whether it be something more traditional or, more often, something that is new or different. They specialise in natural and biodynamic wines but without any pretension. The cheese selection is wonderful but particularly elevated by Christophe’s homemade pickles and preserves.
n. b.
Knowledgeable and unpretentious fine food and wine shop, loved it. The owner was welcoming and warm
B. M.
Great place - wine, cheese and great meats - all delicious and really friendly staff willing to advise if you need some help.
J. D.
This is my second time there and I love it! The produce is delicious, the staff super friendly and really passionate and knowledgeable about food and wine. The taleggio and the red wine I had were incredible! Also the onion chutney I had with one of my cheeses was amazing.
I came on my own and I felt very comfortable. I also felt safe in terms of COVID-19, the staff takes it seriously and tables are spaced out in a way that’s adequately socially distanced but also cosy.
Will definitely come back. A great place to relax and enjoy great food.
C. A.
Great way to try different new cheese and wine.
E. P.
Went in a couple of weeks ago looking for a riesling to go with a Thai meal and the owner redirected me to an alternative choice that was cheaper and paired really well! For full disclosure, he did joke that I was now obliged to give him a five star review since he'd prompted me to opt for a cheaper wine, but I reckon I would've done so anyway!
S. F.
Outstanding service and delicious food. This is a true neighbourhood gem. We will be back!
K.
A wonderful bar and shop! Whilst visiting London we wanted a cheese and wine bar to end the day and came across LeChevalier! A wonderful find! The staff are attentive and know their produce. They are friendly and strike up good conversation about the cheese and wine! What we bought could not be faulted! I shall be returning without a doubt!
K. G.
Incredible wine and cheese and incredible service - this is where you want to be if you want a proper local small business to support and you love wine! Also the wine on tap is excellent value for money and way better than just going to Tesco.
S. L.
What a find! An incredible selection of cheese, all individually complimented with their own compote/pickle (some handmade by Christope). Highly recommend taking Lucie’s recommendations on the wine - very knowledgeable and friendly!
J. G.
Excellent wine, friendly service and mouth watering food. Left knowing we found something very special. Already planning our next trip!
S. W.
An excellent place for wine, cheese and cured meats. Staff is knowledgeable and can make great recommendations. They also practice social distancing and provide a sound and safe place to shop.
S. H.
What a great place this is. I very rarely go to a bar and ask the staff just to give me something nice/interesting but I would really recommend you do it here.
This place really takes a lot of pride in all the wine, cheese, breads and charcuterie they sell. The owner, Christoph, and Gigi (I think it was?) really do know their stuff and make us fell so welcome every time we visit. Great addition to the area and feel very lucky to have it near to home. Would also really recommend the pour your own bottles and the wine tasting events they put on if you get the chance too!
P. A.
An absolute hidden gem. Excellent selection of wines to choose from - I just came here for a bottle to take away and the guy recommended me a great wine based on my budget (il Bacco 2017). They’ve got the vibe right, interior looks welcoming & cozy. Definitely returning.
J. R.
Excellent selection of wines, was introduced to fruity south African reds. Will be returning shortly! Food is very interesting, fantastic combination of meats, breads and cheeses which really compliment each other and the drinks. 10/10
L. M.
Lovely looking wine bar that I have been walking past for a months on my way home from work. Finally decided to drop in and it was not bad. The service was very average at first, the manager appearing arrogant and nonchalant after we asked for recommendations even though there was only one other customer besides my partner and I. Perhaps this was just a cultural thing, but once he opened up a bit more and appeared more friendly, though not as friendly or welcoming as other similar places nearby. We did order a couple of bottles of wine with some meats and cheeses which was all beautiful however. Undecided whether I will go back, the service really put me off initially. More likely to go back for take away wine and charcuterie only.
N. R.
Great place! Excellent wine, cheese and charcuterie. Really friendly staff who were more than happy to help with recommendations. Great atmosphere, buzzing but not too packed yet - I hope that doesn't change!
S. H.
Amazing wine and cheese! We will be back :)
A. C.
Love Lechevalier. Love Christoph. Every take-away wine recommendation has been excellent. Every dine-in experience has been delicious. My partner & I visit this wine bar every week. Highly recommend!
K. S.
I had a really enjoyable time here. My partner brought me here for my birthday, Christophe (the owner) had organised an afternoon to take us on a tour of several wines, not just the wine itself, but where it came from, who was making it, and why he chose to stock it. The session involved delicious cheese and charcuterie too, and we left very happy with a couple of boxes of wine.
If you want to do a down to earth wine tasting experience without the arrogance of typical wine cellars, then I highly recommend getting in touch and organising with Christophe.
D. E.
I love this place. They are so friendly, helpful and provide great advice on wines. I cannot recommend enough.
L. D.
A firm favourite with me and friends. Having lived in Bermondsey my whole life, places like Lechevalier make the area. Service is spot on always, Knowledge about wine is second to none and perfect for a glass of wine on route home or a lazy Sunday afternoon when you don’t want to cook. The owner really shines out as being not only a huge help but perfect for new suggestions too. Go immediately, you won’t be disappointed!
V. T.
We first visited this place when the only had a couple of shelves at the front selling bottled wine to go. Since then, they have developed a full inventory of cheese, wine, charcuterie and bread with small plates coming soon! The service here is amazing and there is nothing like getting a slice of Christophe’s knowledge and conversation - that along is worth the trip.
This interesting place includes wine for all budgets £10-60 including changing taps where you can try beautiful wine from as low as £6. This is the star for all wine novices and we look forward to see them continue to grow. The ‘to go’ place in SE London -

Lovely place, amazing wine and top service. Add to that delicious cheese and you've got a cracker of a wine bar (get it!!).
Seriously tho, loved this place. Lots of interesting wines at reasonable prices.
M. W.
A gem of a place! Cristoph was so friendly and put us at ease immediately. The organic red wine was absolutely delicious and the atmosphere was so relaxed. We will definitely make this a regular destination whenever we visit London.
I. B.
Lovely place for a cosy evening, the selection of cheese was great and the owner is really nice, he will give you great suggestions for what to order.
A. P.
Great selection of cured meats and cheeses.
The wine selection includes some excellent examples of less commonly seen wines such as malavasia and furmint, as well as very unconventional approaches to standards.
The staff are friendly and approachable, and I had a good chat with the owner about the selection - be warned he is keen to challenge your perceptions!
N. G.
Christoph it was absolute pleasure getting to meet you the other day. Being educated on the processes of wine making was fascinating and your knowledge of wine was inspired. I look forward to showing off this place to more of my friends in the future.
C. B.
Wonderful selection of wines, cheese, meats bread... absolutely impeccable service, sophisticated atmosphere, and thanks to the Charismatic front of house owner Christophe, an unforgettable and delightful experience.
M. O.
What a hidden treasure! Absolutely 10/10 customer service. VIP treatment from the moment you walk in. Amazing wines and completely reasonable prices. I can't wait to go back and try the cheese!
N. M. B.
Such an amazing discovery! Curated selection of wines from all over the world and the perfect cheese/charcuterie to pair them with.
The edgy interiors and the friendly staff came together to make this one of the best evenings of the month!
S. K.
A hidden gem away from the bustle of Bermondsey street. An excellent selection of interesting wines, with great cheese pairing options.
W. W.
Lechevalier has the most interesting selection of natural wine in London. They rotate their stock often and every time I visit, I'm amazed at the depth of their list. Perfect for an afternoon glass of wine (or three).
D. Q.
I have been so many times and always enjoyed the range of wines and charcuterie (always a new thing to try), and the staff are always lovely. There is such a cosy and intimate atmosphere, but it feels very natural.
O. J.
This is a fantastic wine bar, with the experience enhanced by an incredibly welcoming and knowledgeable owner and staff. You immediately feel like family after walking in the door, and are given great guidance and advice (and tasters) when choosing your perfect glass...or bottle.
Bonus tips: The bread and olive oil is to die for. DO NOT SKIP. They should serve the olive oil by the bottle too. If you're a natural wine fan give La Napoleon a shot.
L. B.
Great special place to go ♡ nice choice of wine and cheese, french but not only. Most importantly lovely statf open to wine tasting, chatting, charing etc..great atmosphere! Special thanks to Christophe ;)
Highly recommended
J. C.
Excellent wine, excellent meat, excellent cheese and most importantly excellent service. A regular for my wife and I on a weekend for a takeaway to enjoy at home, with a drink and nibbles at the bar on the way home reserved for during the week.
D. B.
Conceived and run by a former Borough Wines manager, Le Chevalier is a diamond in the rough. A wonderful selection of Deli items, bread and wine.
The predominant focus is on French produce - delicious wine, charcuterie, and cheese. The owner is passionate about every item on his shelves; understanding its provenance, production and history.
Complementing the french vibe is a range of hyper local artisan goods - Hackney pickles, Bermondsey made Cheese and Jam, Kernel Beer.
Wine is available to buy by the bottle or refillable bottle to enjoy at home or on the premises for a fixed corkage of £10.
I. T.
Wondered into this shop during work lunch break because I was attracted by the selection of wines they have. Picked up a riseling and a camembret, really enjoyed the staff's frendly service, highly recommended it for wine and cold cut purchases, definitely will visit again!
N. C.
Love the wines and the staff - they are all both incredibly helpful and interesting. Throughly recommend this place if you would like to stop for a glass of wine or pick up a bottle on the way home.
L. M.
Le Chevalier is the newest wine bar on Tower Bridge Rd. In fact it's the only wine bar on Tower Bridge until you reach the river. This place has excellent aspirations to class, taste, freshness, lovely snacks and quality wine. With a french proprietor, they have not been hard to achieve. Now it's just waiting to be discovered.
I. P.
Love Lechevalier, Christophe and the staff are super knowledgable, always an interesting and different selection of great wines, cheese and charcuterie. A fountain of knowledge and an asset to this part of town.

Unique and delicious wines (that Frizzante), beautiful cheese and charcuterie, lovely service and dogs are welcome! The perfect spot after a long day at work or with a bunch of friends!

Une sélection de vins de différent pays, de beaux fromages et de la charcuterie de bon goût. Les portions sont généreuses et le tout est présenté avec savoir-faire. Très bonne équipe qui connait bien les produits. Du travail accompli !

(Translated) I ask to see the cellar and they tell me no! I enter the shop and found me in a very hot environment. The bottles of wine displayed in an environment of about 28 degrees centigrade. No comment

(Translated) A huge selection of wine ‘with character’: red, white, pink, sparkling, orange and natural. Mortadella, prosciutto, cheeses and smoked almonds were especially pleased with the appetizers. Thanks to the owner Christoph, I also came out with a clear knowledge of how jam is different from jam and confiture.
