Reviews of MOTH Club

A great small music venue in the heart of Hackney. This is basically an old working men’s club but the atmosphere with the low ceilings and the tiny stage and small booths to sit in. The atmosphere is amazing and the staff are really friendly. However it’s not entirely disabled access friendly. The club will reserve a booth for disabled gig goers. However, being right at the front by the stage we had the table in front of us knocked over twice by people in the crowd spilling beer and at one time actually spilling a candle with hot wax all over the seat in front of me. It also becomes a bit difficult to get out because of the crowd if you want to get the bar or anything or just get out of the venue it can be quite difficult.

The outside and entrance are deceptive as it's an old Legion Clun but the interior is astounding with gold glitter walls, really kitch. Great sound, plenty of room to dance and brilliant staff. Absolutely loved it.
F. E.
Went to the david bowie night here and it was brilliant. Great music and atmosphere and venue. Loved it !!!! Will go again. It is in hackney which is far away otherwise I would be there all the time.! Amazing DJ who played some proper old bowie tracks at the start, my favourite. A v enjoyable night.
B. M.
I absolutely love this venue, all the staff have been brilliant every time, wonderful little club, decent drinks, great atmosphere! Never any agro or rubbish mood. Just a great venue full of people wanting to have a good time.
M. M.
Great small venue for getting a close up and personal performance from the fabulous Billy Nomates
C. F.
Great live music venue with a good selection of drinks and enough staff to make sure even a full house didn't have to wait long to be served. Looking forward to seeing other bands here.
E. R.
Super clean, great quick service, amazing for a night out with mates
S. S.
Went to see Selofane and the opening act. 2021. Very poor quality sound. Trying to push to much sound through a system that can't take it is real pet peeve of mine. Accept your limitations, I say. Who's is to blame? I only visited venue, I didn't meet sound engineer so jokes on them. Don't remember much else simply because I was trying to hang as much as I could in the smoking area. 😁 that's to say AWAY from the sound.
M. T.
A spacious bar and music location in Hackney, conveniently located close to the train station.
G. L.
Been there countless times over the years because it's one of the best clubs in London for throwback nights (70s, 80s) - attracts a really good crowd of people who just want to dance and enjoy the music!
M. B.
I would have given this place 5 stars as it's a fab intimate venue, however I didn't particularly like drinking from plastic cups, or that as soon as the band played their last note the door staff opened the doors, ushered every one out, and then proceeded to shout at us to leave the area. Not the friendliest or politest exit...
L. H.
Very cool spot. Just went for battle of the bands and had such a great time. Highly recommended
R. G.
Like it hasnt changed since the 90s this place is happily stuck in a time warp. Fun, loud, dancy and playful. I danced like it was 1999. Wasnt really expecting much from the outside, it has a bit of a studenty vibe inside, but in a good, familiar, slightly nostalgic way but without the smell of stale cigarettes or stale beer. Cant wait to go again. Check for what's on the night you go as the may be live music or djs or both or neither!
G. L.
Lovely venue. Glittery ceiling. Lady at the bar was a bit of a misery though.good view if the stage. Sound is pretty good though lacks bottom end.
S. T.
Fabulous venue in the heart of Hackney. Is an old working man's club, and they have kept it almost identical to how it was - including the medals, photos etc... But added some glittery flair!
Bar is small but has a decent selection of drinks. Seen some fairly big names in such a small venue, so keep an eye out! They also have a whole bunch of regular club nights which look super fun, but not been there yet for any of those.
I. H.
The glittered ceilings of MOTH Club uphold an enclave of creatives and musicians from the East London community and around the world. It’s cozy, dancey, and vibrant. Service is good; the beer is cold. Home to karaoke & comedy nights, DJs spinning physical (gasp) 45s, and a hodgepodge of eclectic sonic palettes, MOTH Club is a sacred testament to the importance and impact of cultural spaces, evincing their ex working men’s club heritage whilst churning the modern cultural barrel. In this essay I will…
G. S.
Brilliant for a night out. Some of he beat live music in town. Brilliant sound and the best decorated venue in London.
S. B.
A small and somewhat quirky club/music venue. The bar has a reasonable selection of beers.
T. S.
Fantastic atmosphere, the music selection was great and the staff were all super friendly and polite, especially John who served me. Service was quick. Highly recommend
M. B.
Great crowd, great music, great dancing. Funk, disco, all that 70 80s good stuff. Highly recommended
N. H.
Awesome pub/disco. Retro, working mans club vibe. With a large dance hall in the back. Quick service, even if it is in plastic cups. 80s hits and great crowd. Will be returning.
E. J.
Fantastic gig and a cosy venue, really enjoyed it here
B. N.
Great intimate venue, I went for what turned out to be one of Yeasayer's final gigs
S. W.
Fantastic beers, great staff, great sound. What more could you want?!
A. L.
Great crowd and fun music. Music differs from event to event.
M. M.
Worst rum and coke ever but great music. Nice staff and premises.
G. M.
Great venue, very personal while relaxed.
H. C.
Excellent and speedy bar service. Professional doormen. Top notch experience
M. B.
Great music venue...just been to see Trampolene absolutely wicked gig. Thank you.
M. E.
Basic and fun, I have only been for the film Sundays. A last east London out post still standing....
J. “. G.
1st time there to see big sexy noise. Great little place where working man's club meets loud music! Easy to get to friendly staff and door men! Great pubs and food in the immediate vicinity! Can't wait to see another band there!
S. R.
Awesome service by Ivo & superb atmosphere 4 live gig...James Walbourne we are talking
F. A.
One of the best gig venues I've ever been to. So close to the band you're pretty much on stage. The atmosphere is perfect. A great balance of tacky but effective decor makes you feel like you're having a private gig in a mates living room
G. C.
Good beer. Nice venue keeping some of its heritage in the décor.
R. P.
Great music venue with disabled access too which is unusual in London. Bar prices reasonable and clean loos. Seating availble as well but get in early if you want to sit. Sound good and door staff no problem unlike some places. The stage is quite low so no strained necks if you at the front.
D. D.
A classically odd venue with a tiny little stage and dancefloor. The area feels like a cross between a social club and a pub with sparkly ceilings and trophies along the walls. Had a really good time though - try the moth IPA.
J. A.
Staff are pleasant and the drinks are reasonably priced. The venue itself is a bit of a time capsule, but that's part of its charm. Only problem is there were about ten bouncers which was totally unnecessary for the size of the place. They were constantly doing the rounds with a torch, and one standing at every door you went through. You couldn't even go for a piss without one breathing down your neck. Not sure if this place has had trouble before, but it completely ruined the atmosphere and meant everyone was constantly on edge or had their conversations interrupted every five minutes with a torch in the face and being asked to move. This place also needs a proper smoking area. I'm not a smoker myself, but it was clear the space they were using was just not fit for purpose and I'm pretty sure you shouldn't be smoking around air-con outlets anyway. Otherwise not too bad.
P. Y.
In short: A must go place. Get off the sofa and go. Now.
M. C.
Perfect venue to see your favourite bands. Totally unpretentious, locals mix it with gig-goers. The sound is great and the bar has a great selection of beers on offer! Get to a gig here as soon as you can!
L. O.
Always a great night at MOTH club. Whether it's a comedy night, film screening or club night, the atmosphere created there is worth experiencing for yourself. The crowd is always really friendly and drinks are reasonable. Their ABBA nights are a particular highlight!
G. C.
Went to comedy gig, great atmosphere and amazed at the 2pint glasses, less bar trips
A. S.
Nice space - an old Rotary club, memorabilia and a few locals still intact. Love the shiny ceiling. But the air-conditioning needed to be on from the start, not just halfway through the headline set, because it was dangerously warm.
G. F.
Fantastic music venue, great sound! Drinks are reasonably priced and staff are generally friendly. The room is nicely decorated as decked out with comfortable seating and a few tables
T. C.
Amazing live music venue, glittery ceiling. All you need really
S. W.
EXCELLENT music content on 80s nights. A pint of draught beer or cider will run you £5 which is standard Hackney prices honestly. A great atmosphere for you and your mates to lose yourselves in! The bar can get crowded so I'd suggest getting a round.
B. L.
Great venue, rough cider.
A.
The bouncers. Yes. Three on the door on a Tuesday. And in everyone's face too. There should be two max and they should greet you with good evening sir and hold the door open for you just like the Lexington.
Gig was great.
Beer was great.
Sound was appalling. I've no idea where the lead singer's audio was being played but not at the front. Very amateur to not realise that there are almost no vocals. Doesn't help that the sound desk is at the back by the bar behind 200 people.
Big disappointment.
s. M.
Great proper old style working man's club, went for a gig and it was ideal, small room ,low stage, bar and minimal seating, small enough to get up close and intimate with the band but big enough for a small mosh pit and still room to stand or dance at the sides or back and still see everything, I may be biased as this is my ideal venue, the sort of place you can see up and coming bands relevantly cheap with proper atmosphere. A dying breed in this day and age, loved it.
M. S.
Went to a DJ set here that felt more like a house party with some really cool strangers. Go with friends, meet people, marvel at the streamers behind the stage. There are also two bars! Conveniently no waiting needed. And prices are to be expected for London. No frills, just a casual vibe.
R. S.
Love it here. Have gone to a Madonna night and a Lizzo night and they both were amazing. I love the atmosphere they’ve created. I always feel safe and free to have fun here.
T. P.
This club is a throwback to the glittery 1970s but also has a lot of earlier memorabilia around the walls. It is a great venue to see some of the best indie bands and artists around.
N. K.
I really like what they have done here. A former service men's club has been given a new lease of life as a trendy venue with plenty of live music, film screening and other events by the group who also runs the Shacklewell Arms and Lock Tavern. The place much of its original decor and charm, albeit with a large sprinkling of gold glitter. This renaissance has also been inclusive to the old regulars who can still be found merrily drinking away in the small side bar so everybody's happy!
Z. A.
Really cool venue, a little small and the sound system could be better but I really liked the ‘feel’ of the place, great for intimate gigs
N. M.
Great Thursday night comedy.
A. N.
Amazing live music lined up in the quirky ballroom. I like that the venue it's separated from the proper old school boozer pub part, but the bar could be some much better with a wider range of ales, beers and spirits and a more trained and passionate staff.
G. W.
Another epic venue for cutting edge live music. A treat.
M. D. (.
Surprising little gem in the hearth of Hackney. Prices are reasonably good for a club night, average for a pub. They have 2 bars so when there`s a gig inside and it`s too busy you can get a drink from the other side in the lobby where you can also have a chat with your friends as the music is not so loud there. Staff is very friendly and down to earth but the bouncers were the biggest surprise (in a very positive way) I`ve never experienced in London before that security staff would be so nice, friendly, helpful and polite at the same time. I wouldn`t have imagined but it makes a huge difference how you feel during the night.
N. T.
Feels like a pub, reasonable priced drinks. Staff were relatively friendly. Decor pjtdatednbut in keeping with the events taking place. Generally a good place to go for a light night out.
M. S.
Went to see METZ, they were great bit acoustics could be better in hearing the vocals (mic) over the instruments. Very small space but at least I got to relax by a couch.
S.
Awesome little venue with a glittery ceiling and good acoustics. It can get quite toasty in there though - jugs of water on the bar much appreciated!
H. S.
Unusual venue, but friendly atmosphere and good beer on tap.
N. G.
Really cool venue with nice staff. Sound quality was great, nice seating areas and such. Great location. Looking forward to another gig there.
J. B.
Pretty great venue for sound, nice low ceiling. The whole room is an amazing cross between a working men's club (which it used to be) and a disco hall.
R. J.
It had a 1970s Carmarthen rugby club vibe mixed in with a glitter ceiling dance hall. I was at a Northern Soul night with lots of dancing. It was fab.
K. B.
Amazing live music venue. So few left these days - this is to be cherished! Good club nights after too. This is an east London gem.
S. G. P.
Great venue. Honestly had no idea what to expect with the look of the place. But the beer was good, sound was perfect and the staff were lovely.
B. R.
A tarted up working men’s club with a David Lynch vibe and an experimental booking policy. There are booths from which you can watch a show and a chatty smoking area. You can escape to an old style public bar for a one on one chat
C. W.
Great comedy gigs
J. N.
Venue has kept its retired serviceman's club character spliced with the art scene of modern east london. Great concerts are regularly on here, so keep an eye out!
A. A.
The event itself was great but the venue was very old and sticky, a bit dubious looking from the outside as you go through a small bar to get to the event room.
J. M.
Great venue, friendly staff and a good atmosphere. Beats lots of more expensive clubs hands down!
C. W.
Maybe my favourite music venue in London! sound is ace and beers aren't too pricey - love this place
C. M.
Horrible when busy on gig nights. Very crowded if it's a popular gig /band playing. Otherwise fairly ordinary... bouncer s sometimes a bit nasty
J. W.
We meet here for the M.O.T.H.W.A. meetings.
A. s.
One of best venues I been in years and month pilsner is top beer, quire unique with all ipa piss around to find a proper not commercial pilsner, greatly recomended,
P. M.
Good music venue, nice vibe, buy your pints in the bar before you go into the music room as they don't sell pints in there but hipster cans.
A. M.
Love the Moth Club, great small venue that attracts some amazing bands. Also has some fun club nights. Wonderful Hackney secret.
P. S.
What an amazing and unexpected night out. Just Rick up if you can get tickets and see where music takes you. It took us to Sunderland and California.
P. S.
It's a 5
M. B.
There is always something special about gigs in Moth. You'll always discover new bands and acts. Place to go when you're keen to explore.
J. H.
Small intimate venue, very expensive drinks, but the stage was small so you got up close and personal with the band.
S. D.
Good gig venue

Fab venue for a perfect gig!
D. C.
I went for 80s night, and was not disappointed. Small bar with a hall venue at the back, local atmosphere and reasonably priced drinks.
c. m.
Old School. These places need to be loved and appreciated once they are gone they are gone. Bar, venue packed for Simpson's all day screening.
R.
Lovely place, back to the past.
W. F.
Really decent little club, very trendy inside, good beer and good prices, Has some good bands playing too although the sound is pretty bad.
r. b.
Ace spot! I went to see a film with a friend and was amazing. Cosy and enjoyable pub.
Highly recommend to follow them on facebook and go to any event!
G. C.
Moth Club is the best place to get drunk & dance till early morning, as all East Londoners do on the weekly themed parties!
E. T.
Fun local club that's now turned into a venue for gigs and shows. Great feeling to support local events and cheap drinks!
S. A.

I went to an 80s night which was excellent. The DJ was brilliant and there was a great, mixed crowd.
W. B.
Used to be a war veteran pub, has a traditional pub in the front and then a large open music venue in the back.
c. j.
Nice little venue, although when attending gigs it can get very overcrowded but a lovely evening was had here.
