Reviews of Plaquemine Lock
D. T.
Transported from the Louisiana bayou to Islington. A fine place with an eclectic choice of beers on keg and an American Pale Ale on cask, room for another cask but not used in these uncertain times, wise, very wise. A great looking Cajun inspired menu. A lovely location and Oyster candles. Live jazz is clearly a feature but some fun early R&R playing on the system today. A great bit of fun next to the canal. Do visit, you will enjoy!

Really impressed by the Plaquemine Lock. Saw it had been given a Bib by Michelin and thought it was different from a lot of stuff out there so decided to give it a try. Food was great, things I'd never normally order delivered - and all things considered I thought it was well worth the money. Over ordered as there was so much I wanted to try, but the staff were really friendly, and I didn't at any point feel rushed. Local friendly pub vibe, with live music (which I'll be back for) and some food that transports you to New Orleans.

From warm welcome to see you again sending off all was spot on!!!! I celebrated my 41st birthday with a group of 10 friends and my 4months baby during Jazz hours on Saturday, the place was airy, spotless clean, Steve (the manager) greeted us with a warm smile and all the staff members maintained their attention throughout the evening! All of us had a laidback yet uplifting, high standard memorable experience. Oysters were fresh, so was the rest of the food. Jazz singer Louisa added unforgettable enjoyable ambience. I was overwhelmed with interesting drawing on the walls and tries to take it all in whilst there ( even the toilet was picture fun perfect😜)but will have to come back to get it all in. Loved every second of our time at Plaquemine. I am sure I and my friends will return there many times and recommend to others. Thank you

Really enjoyed this colourful pub with its busy and chatty atmosphere. The staff were very friendly, food was tasty and drinks were reasonably priced.
A. C.
Such an original spot in London. Great food, nice atmosphere and friendly staff. Allergy friendly. I definitely recommend it!
A. G.
My favourite restaurant in London. Limited but sumptuous vegan/veggie options for mains but we had the Fried Green Tomato Poboy and Aubergine Jamabalaya and they were unforgettable (plus salad)! The speakeasy vibe was unmatched and the whole interior really painted a picture of NOLA via London. All significant occasions will now be held at Plaq! Definitely need to catch some live music too.

Our food took a very long time and was a little lackluster but they mentioned they just started a new menu. judging by the good reviews we’ll be back to try again. Atmosphere was excellent, the Louisiana hot sauce was a great touch and they have a thoughtfully (Belgian) leaning beer selection.
I. S.
Lovely exterior and location by the canal. Interior could do with a little bit more organizing but it has its own character. Food was not bad but could do with more although the serving is quite generous. Had a bit of a wait during visit but I understand it was a busy Sunday lunch.
B. K.
Always great food here. I'm originally from South Louisiana and can personally vouch for both the quality and authenticity. Try everything...seriously; you won't be disappointed!
Z. A.
Went with a group of friends and can confirm that both the food and atmosphere are great. Good drinks, good food and good vibes. Will be back soon.
Y. S.
Fantastic food, great cocktails and perfect service by friendly staff :) Plaquemine Lock is a must go!
B. F.
What can I say about the Plaque-y, in one word, N'Orleans. On a chilly but sunny Saturday eve in spring, the missus and I took a trip down Bourbon Street in Islington. Piping hot spicy shrimp beignets, cheesy and garlicky oyster heaven, fluffy cornbread, packed out Po-boys and several cocktails later we were left wondering why we hadn't discovered this hidden gem earlier. Watching the passers by on a prime piece of real estate topped it off, will certainly be back, sooner rather than later.
B. W.
Great spot to get a taste of Louisiana here in London, being from there was keen to try and by far one of the best outside of the state.
J. G.
Delicious food, fantastic staff, great atmosphere, and wonderful live jazz... what more could you ask for? Definitely reminds me of being in New Orleans and all the fun (and delicious) times I had there.... and most delicious pecan pie EVER. Thank you!!
L.
We discovered this place by chance, and thoroughly enjoyed our late lunch on a Sunday afternoon (although the menu was the brunch menu).
Having been to New Orleans before, we both felt the food here really hit the same notes as anything we’d eaten over there; I had the delicious eggs Sardou, while my partner had the fried chicken with cornbread French toast. For dessert we had the pecan pie, and the beignets, both of which were excellent.
Service was friendly but could have been faster and more attentive, however overall we had such a nice meal that we’re keen to return soon.
S. M.
Really nice. Go on Sunday afternoon (with a reservation) for live music. Creole/New Orleans food which is delicious even if it's not authentic.
Try the pumpkin pie and/or pecan crêpes
N. M.
For the first time visiting a Creole restaurant Plaquemine Lock has set the bar really high. The staff were friendly and very helpful with any questions we had. The food tastes fantastic and I would suggest you get the pecan pie for dessert!
C. D.
We loved the Jazz brunch, great guitarist and lovely singer. The food was fantastic and delicious, really hit the spot for an American craving southern food. Gumbo was on point!
l.
Great local pub, decoration, food and amazing cakes! We went at lunch time and wasn't pack but we saw the staff setting the tables for dinner and was all booked since 6pm. The Hurricane cocktail is delicious as well as the Po'boy - baguette filled with either fried shrimp, beef etc. Vegetarian option available as well as other cocktails, food and of course the usual pub beers. Don't miss the strawberry cake!
H. M.
I must admit that the nearly screaming table next to us did taint the experience, but the staff were so lovely and the food, just scruptous enough that I would be remiss not to give this place a 5. I'm American and there are no proper southern creole restaurants in London, aside from this one. I shall certainly return. The fried green tomatoes were so delicious I had to stop myself from ordering another portion.
A. D.
The food was very tasty! The staff was super friendly and the service was great - I felt for the short staffed fella but he was great! The only problem was that there was no live music for Sunday Jazz Brunch which was what we went there for. We will be back for live music and food for sure!
C. M.
Delicious food, better even than any meal I ate in Louisiana itself! Great atmosphere and good music. Well worth a visit.
E. D.
Lovely small bar. Creole food. Live jazz and blues music. Great staff.
T.
I had the eggs sardou and really loved it, but my friend had the chicken and pancakes and couldn't finish it, as she didn't like it. I was super disappointed with the Jazz Brunch, there was one guy on the piano and he was playing Christmas music rather than jazz.
B. S. (.
Went for the Jazz brunch on Sunday. 2 courses for £20 or 3 for £25. The jambalaya was nice but want to try it with seafood. The pecan pie was hard to eat, it was very tough to cut.
P. A.
One of my favorites bar in the area. Food is delicious (live the beers there) service is excellent and friendly. Try to book as well when there are Jazz event’s. The go to bar in Angel
P.
Stopped in for drinks, jazz, and some Louisiana style cookin’. Food was really good - crawfish boil, seafood fritto, cornbread, and Cajun cracklins. All of it was delicious, but them cracklins’ blew our mind. Drinks were top notch too - mint julep, sazerac, and bloody marys. Bloody Mary’s were top notch and the Sazerac was boozy and went down nice. Live jazz started at 14:00 (Saturday) and was excellent. Highly recommend.
L. M.
Super unique pub great drink choice food we had was lovely. Staff were brilliant very attentive. Could do with another veggie option.
M. C.
One of my favourite spots - lovely atmosphere (especially on jazz nights) and tasty Louisiana food
T. P.
A good atmosphere inside and an excellent selection of beer. The food was tasty too, and a bit different from the usual.
J. H.
2nd time coming here and the food was amazing both times. The best fried chicken I’ve had in London. Definitely recommend and will be back soon.
L. C.
I missed Creole food from the US and was delighted to have discovered this. The food is decent but portions are small for the price. Oyster po’boy (sandwich / baguette) had 4 fried oysters for £21. We ordered shrimp n grits, shrimp beignets (starter), watermelon tomato salad, oyster po boy for £59.
I would have scored this slightly higher except for how the night ended. We got charged only £9 after the Eat Out scheme was incorrectly deducted x2 by their system and flagged it to the hostess. After all, we are dining out to help local businesses and wanted to be honest. So we ultimately paid the correct price of £39 but the hostess didn't seem all that appreciative of our honesty. She proceeded to simply explain there’s been issues with their system (clearly) and charged us the correct amount.
J. R.
Great staff, reasonable selection of beers.
The Gumbo could have been a bit spicier.
Would return, especially for the live jazz.
m. r.
Very nice and excellent food. Just a bit too loud for the ambiance music.
R. F.
Great atmosphere and live music. Lovely staff and brilliant oyster offers. Will definitely be back again.
S. W.
I just came from New Orleans. The fried green tomatoes and remoulade were ok. Hurricane didn’t have enough alcohol. “Shrimp and grits” tasted ok but not real grits - lumpy substitute. That is NOT American cornbread. Wish they had bbq shrimp and chargrilled oysters on the menu
A. F.
Lovely location by the river and a bit away from Angel high street. Fairly busy but social distanced Friday night booking. Food was interesting if not as bursting with flavour as I'd hoped. Staff were friendly and attentive.
R. o.
Delicious Creole food unlike anything we've teied before. Such a great experience of taste and service.
k. l.
Excellent Louisianan food! Brings you back to America minus the grease and in palatable portions! Good jazz nights and music events! Definitely a must visit if you are living around angel and one to call your local!
W. B.
Disappointing. Bocca di Lupo is exceptional. A great example of a perfectly executed concept. Plaquemine is a concept poorly executed. The quality of the food was quite good but taste-wise was underwhelming. No off menu cocktails, the cocktail list is 6 'signature' drinks and that's your choice. Service was pretty good. Just a bit of a shame that the sum of its parts is 'meh'.
S. A.
A hidden gem in the heart of Islington. Amazing food, drinks and ambiance. But let’s not forget the wonderful staff who make everyone feel at home from the minute you step into the Plaquemine Lock!
v. R.
We had not had Cajun before, its worth seeking out! The spices and flavours are new and endjoyable
T. D.
The best pork scratchings with some fried chicken and spiced fries I have tasted in Islington… but the oysters were even more brilliant!
G. L.
If you want great quality casian food with real friendly service, then this is your place.
A great selection of beers and cocktails!
We shared 2 platters between 5 people and that was the perfect amount of food to still have room for dessert.
J. S.
From a southerner, best place for southern food in Central /East London. Grits are done right. Jicama slaw and collard greens. Sadly, *No more fried okra*. :-( pecan pie pleases. Great local pints. In terms of #accessibility you have disabled toilets, child changing facilities, and unisex stalls.
S.
Delicious food with such a lovely warm atmosphere 🥰

I had been interested in visiting the Plaquemine Lock pub, which serves Creole and Cajun food. I love Cajun food – especially blackened dishes. The Plaquemine Lock (formerly the Prince of Wales pub) is a tribute to owner chef Jacob Kennedy’s grandmother who was born into a famous Louisiana family in the town of Plaquemine near Baton Rouge. I went to New Orleans a few years ago with my sister, brother and sister-in-law. I loved the po’ boys we had at Traceys but never got close to the blackened chicken I was hoping for! I thought sharing a po’ boy would give me enough of a taste of the food to know if I’d go back to the Plaquemine Lock.
There were no fried oyster po’ boys on the menu and to me this is the quintessential version. There were, however, fried shrimp po’boys but I decided to skip them.
We ordered a lunch special of a beef debris po’ boy with fries (£9) and an afterthought of the bourbon Tabasco maple wings (a small dish at £6.50). Both tasted quite nice. I have no argument with the flavours. My feeling is that London doesn’t, and maybe can’t, compete with the lavishness which is American cuisine. The hot-dog sized baguette, with the small portion of gravied meat and sedate slice of pickle, lettuce and tomato, and swirl of mayonnaise doesn’t satisfy. There’s no gravy or mayo dripping down your hand. There’s no big punch of anything here. It’s dainty and that’s not what this style of cooking should convey. The fries were nicely seasoned and are about the size of a small McDonald’s offering.
I went home and checked my photos of the memorable Tracey’s lunch and this made me even sadder about what I’d had. So bottom line – tastes nice but still disappoints. Be braver, Jacob!!

We had a birthday meal with a few friends. Excellent food and service. Drinks are pub drinks and good wines (not sure if they do cocktails but it’s the type of place that probably does) we would good again.
R. G.
Lovely atmosphere, friendly staff and great food and drinks. Locals are lucky to have a place like this to go to
R. M.
Really great pub with excellent staff who really go above and beyond to look after customers. Beer selection was nice and they made us and our dog really welcome bringing water and treats. Food was decent too. So great to see top class hospitality back doing what it does best. Will be back!
C. M.
Incredible food, as promised. Friendly service and great cocktails. Definitely coming back!

Plaquemine's location, friendly barman and local beers are among its selling points. However, I wasn't impressed with the cajun/creole food itself. Having grown up on the Louisiana border, my palate is more attuned to the subtle flavours. So if you've never tried this cuisine, this pub is okay as an intro, but there's better in London.
e. b.
Lovely staff, interesting creole menu and it's dog friendly too!
R. C.
Came here for brunch and to hear the live jazz, and after initially being a bit peeved that the rest of the place was booked out for a birthday party (we were given no warning of this on booking), all gripes were forgotten due to some really good food and drink and the terrific sounds emanating from the saxophonist and co. I expect to make this a default destination for brunches in the future.
J. T.
Great food. Really flavoursome and lots of variety with opportunities to try things you might otherwise never eat. A slice of Louisiana in London
W. P.
I'm from New Orleans, and tend to avoid Cajun/Creole/New Orleans food when I'm anywhere else. I live in Islington and after a walk found it was dinnertime as I walked by. Fortunately, I didn't know they only served New Orleans food, and I'd ordered a beer before looking at the menu. After looking, I admit I was a bit nervous. Ordered raw oysters, Eggs Sardou, pecan pie and a couple of Sazeracs. Service was superb, food was excellent and music was very nice. I think this kind of place would even do well in New Orleans itself, and that is a high compliment. Cannot recommend enough! Will fill my homesickness void from here-on-out.
G. V.
We had a blast listening to Cosimo matassa project and eating delicious cajun food
Atmosphere was great, service nice, would definitely recommend! Thanks =)
R. W.
Instantly fell in love with this boozer. And I'm gonna go as far as to say it's one of the best I've visited for a long time. Original vibe, great craft beer selection and tasty food. Can't wait to visit again.
N. V.
Best Bourbon selection I've seen in ages. Even has bottles of Pappy.
J. W.
The fried chicken was delicious as were the fries. Friendly staff and nice atmosphere.
R.
Just had an amazing date night dinner here! Staff were so friendly and attentive, the margaritas were absolutely perfect (ended up ordering a jug) and the food was absolutely delicious. Make sure you save room for the dessert as they are equally as incredible! Had an amazing time, thanks guys x
M. M.
Fine dining at this wonderful restaurant.
Delicious flavours of creole and cajun mixed in. Love the atmosphere
The gumbo is fantastic and the fried shrimps
Terrific service here.
Highly recommend
F. F.
Great venue, amazing music & atmosphere - Steve was a fantastic host. Would wholeheartedly recommend!
S. W.
This is one of my absolute favourite places in London! Food is great (tastes authentically cajun) and the live jazz every Sunday adds to its great atmosphere. Would visit again! Highly recommended for anyone who wants a slice of NOLA in London
J. B.
Really excellent food in a chilled atmosphere visited on a Tuesday evening so not too full which helped.
C. B.
Stopped in for American Thanksgiving and had a great meal. Friendly staff, and fun Louisiana-themed decor.
m. h.
Great venue for a Sunday afternoon/evening. Good food choice, live music and amazing staff.
B. C.
The loveliest pub by the canal. They have a good one-way system for COVID reasons so it felt safe to go in and order drinks. We were standing just below facing the canal, magical! I haven't tried the food but it did smell amazing - will be back to try!
D. E.
Fantastic! Tasty food, pleasant atmosphere and good live music. Drinks were a bit on the light side, but quite OK. We got a bit of everything to taste. The downside is that's mostly deep fried food, of course to be expected. But it ended up being really feeling. I can't say that's 100% authentic, but a good fusion for intro to creole cuisine.
l.
I'll preface this with: I love southern / soul / creole food. And I know it's a niche cuisine from a London standpoint.
I've been looking forward to dining at Plaquemine for ~2 years - since a bartender raaaaved about it. Finally had the chance today for lunch & was truly disappointed.
The food was fine, but that's about it. The corn bread was very very chewy, as if it was stale & re-heated. The fried chicken was good - nice batter, & came with potatoes - but I found it a tad salty. My friend got the gumbo & it was massive, but also really salty. The fried green tomatoes were hit + miss (some tomatoes were harder than others), & for some reason the tasty sauce was all the way at the bottom of the dish (so we didn't realize it was there 'til mid way through our meal).
Portions were very sizeable - that's a plus.
For 2 the bill was £58 & we had takeaway (though they had no container for the gumbo/that could take liquids, so we had to leave that behind). Which wasn't a huge loss to us.
Unfortunately wanted this place to be better. I think it has potential - just needs to re-think it's recipes. Southern food can be flavorful, without using lots of salt or frying.
D. C.
Great food, lovely people. There’s some seating outside for drinks.
K. L.
Lovely place. Relaxed atmosphere. Great food. Good location. Well worth a try 👍🏾👍🏾
A. K.
Gorgeous bar, interesting beer and super friendly staff
B. G.
Food was great. The closest to cajun and Creole food I have had outside of New Orleans. Bit on the pricey side but that's to be expected.
J. R.
This was a wonderful little find. We were actually heading for the next pub down but dropped in here on the way. It's a buzzing, friendly place and, although a Saturday night and we didn't have a table booked they got one free for all six of us.
Most of my friends went for the ribs, which were awesome, though we were all tempted by the oysters. I had the gumbo, something new for me and it was amazing, the meat succulent and tender. We'll be back!
Z. B.
Lovely place, lovely people and delicious food. Will go again.
R. S.
Some of the dishes didn't quite stand up to things I've had in New Orleans but that's not to say they were bad. There were lots of flavours in each dish and I definitely will go back to try more. The staff there were also super nice and the live music was fantastic - good bit of jazz to go with your dinner.
N. P.
Really cool energy here - love the live music! If you love seafood then this place is exactly what you need.
L. S.
Amazing food (especially the oysters) and ambience! The staff were exceptional - they were chilled out but at the same time really went the extra mile to accommodate our large group for a birthday. Thank you for a lovely afternoon!
K. W.
Couldn't fault it! Food was mouthwateringly delicious and we could tell as soon as we walked in and the aroma hit us we knew we had found a good spot. Customer service was excellent and attentive to detail for my boyfriend's birthday. We will be back after lockdown lifts and be spreading the word. Thank you
S. W.
Delicious food, very friendly staff, great experience overall 👍
I. M.
the food is exceptional, as good as anything I ate in Louisiana. the service was friendly and attentive, and the drink selection is varied in the best possible way. but honestly, the food is so good. we ordered the shrimp beignets then had to order them again. the jumbalaya and gumbo were incredible. the fried green tomatoes were crisp and delicious.
J. k.
Went on Sunday for brunch. Great food and service (I recommend the fried chicken and pancakes). Also have live music on a Sunday, which was really good. They respect the covid secure rules so highly recommend in these times!
N. G.
Had the Cajun platter and some beers, lovely food and staff. I'm full
M. H.
Went there with boyfriend and a friend and we quickly decided this was one of the best restaurant experiences of the year so far for all three of us. Amazing food, quirky interior and the two men running the place were so genuine and friendly. The experience of social food as delicious as what we ordered (platter) was the best part! We’re definitely coming back, soon!
J. D.
Had lunch time offer. Looking at the main menu I would have been distressed at the full price of the item. The food was tasty. It was a jazz lunch which seem good although I am not a jazz fan or expert.
E. S.
Absolutely delicious southern food. Having spent my childhood in South Carolina this is a heartwarming addition to the London restaurant scene and best of all it is on my road! We ordered lots and shared, everything was delicious but standout for me were the artichoke, gumbo and grits. Taking another group of friends this week, if we can get a table :))
P. M.
Lovely place where to enjoy exotic cuisine from New Orleans
O. N.
We live locally and finally made it here. The food was exquisite and the staff were lovely. Highly recommend. Would be a good venue to host some live music.
C. S.
Good food, nice drinks and very very nice service
M. J. K.
Boudreaux and Thibodeaux come here on a Cajun
S. G.
Wow!!! You have to try this place out! Where to start... the service is spot on, the food is mouth watering and worth the wait (a short wait), and the adult beverages couldn’t be better!!! Our servers (visited multiple times), were so polite and accommodating and cheerful, very pleasant! The food was authentic Southern Creole with soul! Visit early & often!!!
S. B.
My first visit to a place that wasn't a shop since lockdown, and I was *really* nervous - but I needn't have worried. A relaxed vibe, friendly staff and good measures in place - hand sanitiser at the doors, paper menus, a one-way system, well-spaced tables for diners, and I saw staff wiping things down (including the loo) in the hour or so that we were there. Plus, the food - which I've been wanting to try for ages, especially since visiting New Orleans last year - was delicious. We'll be back to work our way through the menu. Thank you for helping me break the ice of my anxiety!
P. K.
Love this place. A gem. It was bustling on Friday night when I arrived, having booked for the wrong night and needing a relatively quiet corner. The staff could not have been more friendly or accommodating of my impossible request. So impressive. The drinks were great; proper sazeracs and a delish creole Bloody Mary, and we enjoyed everything we ate, fried green tomatoes, cornbread ribs...you won’t leave hungry. My only criticism is the collard greens weren’t really collards, they’re some kind of cabbage. But they’d have to be growing their own to have real collards on the menu, so I can’t really hold that against them. We’ll be back, for sure. Thanks to Lynton and his team for a fine night.
J. S.
Great po boy. Nice staff. Interesting deserts.
M. D.
Really lovely New Orleans style pub with live music on Wednesdays and weekends. Does amazing cocktails (sazerac) and snacks and food (could do with more vegetarian options but food is yummy). Super friendly staff and ok decor.
A. P.
Delicious food, great drinks and a fantastic atmosphere! Friendly, helpful staff. As usual, the gumbo was a must have and we particularly enjoyed the mixed grilled oysters this evening. The menu appears to have changed since my last visit - quite excited to see what will be new next time.
A. K.
Lovely place, great staff and menu that reminds you of Nola
J. S.
The food here is absolutely wonderful - and the staff are brilliant. Nothing seems too much trouble. The fried chicken is just wonderful and they've a great selection of beers on offer too. Nice atmosphere and good space for a group
R. V.
One of the few places in London where you can try authentic New Orleans cooking.
When we stepped in and I saw Crystal hot sauce on the tables, I had a feeling it was gonna be good!
The hurricanes were all odd flavours, they didn't have just a regular original one, but they were certainly strong!
Fried green tomatoes were crispy and good, but served without remoulade, which would have been nice. I asked and our server offered mayo or ketchup, despite the fact that they did indeed have remoulade on a separate dish.
Fried chicken was good, tender and juicy inside and crispy outside, not too oily.
Gumbo was good, with a smoky roux as the base.
Service was good, until we needed to pay (a very common stumbling block at many restaurants)
An overall satisfying meal, especially considering how rare it is to find traditional New Orleans food in London!
R. B.
A charming pub in a residential area with what looked like a good selection of beers on tap and Louisiana-themed food. Soft drinks were priced quite reasonably though I gather from friends the alcoholic drinks were more normally priced (i.e. at 'London' prices). Didn't have a full meal but the Cajun fries we snacked on were great. Would visit again.
C.
Nice pub. Average, overpriced food.
C. H.
Great food- albeit not in large portions.
We went for the £15 lunch/early dinner special. The gumbo as a starter was warm, delicious and rich. The small bowl was empty far too quickly.
The main, a po'boy sandwich, was fantastic - bacon & fish fried to perfection.
Warm persimmon pudding with a dollop of cold icecream was the luscious dessert. We both finished every last crumb.
Although the portions seemed small, we were actually pleasantly full. What more do you expect from a great meal at a very reasonable price for London.
A. D.
I love the classy traditional but teal colour tiles outside of this pub. The interior decor though is more in keeping with the food menu. A great update keeping the external at least history of this traditional pub located by the canal, good looking and a friendly vibe.
J. K.
Pretty good Cajun food as London as goes. The jambalaya and the gumbo are both worth a shot. The portions could be a little more generous but I guess there’s something to be said for leaving people wanting more. Then again, maybe not at restaurants.
a.
friendly, different, good food and music
H. R.
Delicious! Didn't know southern food could be taken to a gourmet level. Definitely try the fried chicken, so mouth-watering. Would only say portions are on the small side
K. O.
Outstanding food at a lovely homely pub just on the Canal. The food is wonderfully seasoned and very more-ish and there is a good beer selection too. Highlights are the stuffed poblano pepper with miuthwaterimg andouille, the crawfish and the blackened chicken which was wonderfully tasty but remained tender and juicy.
A great place to spend a leisurely late lunch on a weekday as I have now done a couple of times.
Come hungry, leave very satisfied.
J. A.
Very nice atmosphere, although a tad too noisy
S. M.
Superb food and atmosphere. Lovely staff. Recommended
S. J.
Amazing and unusual food, wonderfully friendly and attentive staff
First time here based on a newspaper review. I haven't eaten Cajun/Creole food for years and whilst I appreciate some purists who have reviewed in the press appear to have had some technical issues with some of the dishes, I can absolutely confirm that everything we had was stonkingly good! Even our 2 year old couldn't get enough of the gumbo, and my Brazilian partner loved everything. For me, the deviled eggs were a real highlight because the chicken skin garnish is so tough to cook consistently well like this. The cocktails we washed down were a welcome walk down memory lane; the Bloody Mary being fantastically different in a really good way, especially with the pickled okra and green bean garnish it came with and things like Hurricanes and Sazeracs featuring on the menu and being served full-strength! Wonderful ambiance, great fit-out and a real gem of a find. 11/10
P. B.
My new favourite place in London. It's like being back in New Orleans. Beautiful inside, great music and friendly staff. The cocktails are great, especially the Hurricane. Boudin Balls are as good as NOLA's finest too. Can't wait to try more of the menu
A. D.
Food was really delicious and special. You don't get this type of food very often in London. You must try the hot sauce they put it on every table. It is quite expensive though.
H. K.
Absolutely fantastic food and wine. Very friendly staff. It's a bit noisy as it's all hard surfaces. And it's quite pricey in a very competitive location. But for that, I would have given them 5 stars.
J. W.
A quiet old pub by the canal, transformed inside into a very relaxed Louisiana-style bar and restaurant. Great cocktails, a seafood-heavy menu of Southern classics – oysters, gumbo, po-boy sandwiches, grits and greens, and fried chicken too. Amazing Pecan pie. Nothing else like this in London!
C. D.
As this is a soft launch I wanted to give proper feedback for the management :-)
The food was excellent. Creole is my favourite cuisine and you can't get it in London. Most Southern restaurants tend to just bung everything in Cajun spices or tomato or bbq sauce but the étouffée and oysters Rockerfeller here were authentic and delicious. The strawberry pie tasted like childhood summers 💛.
Note that this place is a normal pub with extraordinary food rather than a restaurant. Portions are on the smaller side. The sides were really teensy! So order more if you have a big appetite.
Multiple attempts to pre-book via email as directed (from today it is walk-ins only) were ignored. Service was interminably slow throughout - even ordering drinks with no queue (which can be forgiven in a soft launch).
Also the staff were nice but sadly unenthusiastic, no proper questions were asked about our experience which seemed like a missed opportunity to get info and show some pride or love in such a new place with a passion for this type of amazing cuisine.
When it came to ordering coffee they were impatient and there was even some patronising eye-rolling between the bar staff when I asked about "proper" coffee for the beignets and they weren't really listening...I meant traditional French market chicory coffee which is a must with beignets. Finally they explained there was only filter coffee which was a shame as I was expecting at very least they should serve cappuccino, espresso etc to accompany such great food.
All in all these were teething problems, the pub was nice, the staff were pleasant and the food itself was perfect (compliments to the chef)...I will be back for the gumbo!
P. D.
Have been there twice. Food is nice, but some dishes are a bit in the small side and service can be a bit slow. Lively atmosphere and the jazz is pretty cool.
A. B.
This place is serious.... seriously good. From the nice welcome from the staff to the little bar sweet n salty n spicy pecan nuts. Everything is top notch. But holy cow the po boy sandwich are good and i think the fried chicken with grits and biscuit the best chicken in london. Love it.
E. B.
Went a few months back and have to say that it was a great experience! great food and really nice beer! The lady that was looking after us was very professional and attentive! will be back!
A. S.
Pretty nice pub with a Louisiana theme . A good but not extensive selection of beers. It's just the right amount of busy, meaning I managed to squeeze three friends in there
K. P.
Average food (except oysters) but really nice vibe and live jazz on weekends
A. W.
A great idea for a pub/restaurant, the decour and ambiance is very convincing and the staff are terrific. It's location is also ideal and in a nice part of town, just off the canal.
It could be that we were spoiled having visited the real New Orleans and sampled the amazing food and drink that's as abundant as running water, but I felt the menu was overpriced. The cocktails were good but £11 is steep for a Hurricane, and the Po'Boy was bland and disappointingly portioned. Not including fries in the price of the Po'Boy also struck me as slightly mean.
M. P.
Such a great find.. stumbled in here and loved the vibe and the staff and mmm the food!
P. C.
I like the way they still retain the link to the old Prince of Wales by having Camra awards on the walls. The food is quite different and really good and they seem a genuine local pub, not a gastro-pub, which I really like. Full marks to the new owners.
V. F. R.
Food was excellent as usual, and service was remarkable and kind as always. I'm loving the new menu. Today I had smothered eggplant and okra. Was comforting and delicious.
T. H.
Had to opportunity to dine at Plaquemine Lock twice now and both times I have been delighted. The pub itself is absolutely stunning, not your average pub interior at all.
Crab cakes are the most delicious thing ever and the salad garnish that comes with them is so refreshing, I'd order that alone if they offered it!
The deep fried chicken is incredibly soft and succulent (and a great one to order for the kids).
Gumbo wasn't for me but my guests loved it so that is just down to personal taste.
Pecan pie is hella sweet but also oh so good. And the Romanian Pinot Gris is just perfect for pretty much everything.
Go there and try it. It's worth it.
R. C.
Fantastic service and food, if you're lucky enough to be served by Jorge you won't find a better place to be
J. M.
I love the food here - the gumbo is really excellent and the po-boys are solid. The people who work here should bring a bit more of the spirit of New Orleans to go with the food and it would be amazing. Still go, just don't expect a side of Southern hospitality with your po-boy....
K. F. E.
What a lovely place. Great music, great food, need more real all haha
J. B.
As a Cajun girl, I know REAL Cajun food and was beyond delighted by the authenticity of the food at Plaquemine Lock. Boudin balls, boiled crawfish, gumbo, po boys...pretty much everything I grew up on. And the flavour was just as if I was back in Baton Rouge!
We went there last Friday with a big group of friends. At first, the service was very slow, but we assumed the kitchen was backed up because the place was packed. I didn't think much of it, but once the manager realised that we'd been waiting, he gave us the most incredible service, even bringing multiple rounds of shots and lots of free food to our table. I've been in food service before, so I know how stressful it can get when there are a ton of people and maybe something's held-up the kitchen...but this manager went completely above and beyond to rectify the situation. We were so pleased with the service we received in the second half of the evening, that I'm happy to give Plaquemine Lock 5 stars and I can't wait to go back!
Laissez les bons temps rouler!
O. W.
In contrast to what appears to be a complete hatchet job below, the food is excellent, portions are large, and the quality of the ingredients is clearly very good. The grits, biscuits, chicken, boudin were absolutely delicious, although my one gripe would be give me more gravy! A little thimble is not enough!
N. J.
Great place to go but make sure you book an early table. Booked for 21:30 got seated late then told the kitchen closed at 22:00 and the crawl fish we went for they had run out of. Would have been much better if they hadn't sold out.
J. C.
Coming from The South, I have to say that I found it a hit AND a miss. The fried chicken and the pork chop we're excellently prepared. However, the sides were... not good. Seriously, the chicken was perfectly says this Kentucky boy. However the cornbread was such a letdown. The server seemed to be annoyed with us, which was unwelcoming.
J. M.
Delicious food, lovely staff, and great music (all at a reasonable price)!
G. D.
Amazing oysters!!! Mmmm I will come back for a proper meal next time with a platter.
L. G.
Beautiful addition to the neighborhood. Very nice food options for brunch, lunch, and dinner, though you should carefully check the opening times. Great selection of bourbon!
J. H.
Great food, drink & especially service. Hidden gem
S. M.
Visited with friend from Louisiana, during mardi gras, they and everyone had an absolutely wonderful time. Meghan and the team really looked after us, the food is incredible! Can't wait to come again!
S. S.
Nice place but overpriced. A spread of avocado, on one slice of toast, and two eggs cost nearly £11.
E. M.
Incredible food, lovely staff, and just a nice experience. Wanted to go for a while and finally got round to it--will be back!
D. B.
Great service, nice wines and beer selection. Didn't manage to try the food yet but will be back for it. Looks like the perfect place for a few drinks or a bite to eat
j. s.
Great New Orleans themed food. We had the shrimp po boy and the beef and would highly recommend. The other food we saw served looked great too.
S. A.
So good! Boyfriend took us there for a Tuesday meal, he’s Cajun, the food was absolutely amazing! We’ve never expected a place in London to get it so right ..
K. H.
Plaquemine Lock has amazing food and service! I took my husband for his birthday after seeing Plaquemine Lock on the Bib Gourmand list. We were blown away! We got the seafood platter with oysters crab, crawfish, lobster, chips and deep-fried okra. I've never liked okra before but I've been converted. Meghan was so sweet and answered all our questions. We'll absolutely be back soon.
C. W.
This is a great pub: nice decor, next to the canal, usually quiet, nice beers and tasty food. I just wish the portions were a bit bigger... But that's because I'm always hungry
E. V.
Absolutely delicious food, be transported to Louisiana with the help of some fine English Ale. The Po'boy was excellent, the Okra perfect and the desert very good. Can't wait to go again.
C. F.
Love the fact this pub was saved from yet more housing, love being able to get cajun food in London, love the drinks selection and cocktails. On the constructive side, food slightly overpriced by a quid or so, and the naive Nola style decor spliced with British pub vibes needs a bit of aging / bedding in ... in the round, would defs come back.
D. J.
One of the few places to get decent Louisiana cooking in London. Recommended for anyone who knows what it means to miss New Orleans. One star off for the absence of Abita in the beer selection.
D. Z.
All good. You know what to expect so can't be disappointed.
C. D. D.
Lovely Louisiana atmosphere! Very friendly staff, great jazz music on Sundays and Wednesdays and fabulous food. The fried shrimp Po'Boy sandwitch and the gumbo are to die for!
M. A.
Found this "Louisian" pub/restaurant in Angel....absolutely amazing!
Food was great, loved fried okra and the crawfish pie,the po'boy with fried oysters and bacon was delicious.
The staff was so cool, expecially Dario.
C. S.
If you like Southern cooking and have been to Louisiana, you'll find the food here just as you found it in Louisiana. Whether it's the crabcakes, poboys, blackened chicken or the gumbo this is authentic, true to its roots and reasonably priced food.
C. L.
One of my favourite pubs in London. Great sandwiches every time. Bring back the home made pork scratchings, they were awesome.
A. W.
Awesome food, awesome atmosphere x
V. F.
Nice place. Nice atmosphere. Great food and the service was really good too
M. T.
Service was excellent, food was phenomenal... the best Oysters I've ever tasted! Highly recommended.
P. V.
Great place for a drink and a meal. The food is different and very good. We were there for Saturday lunch and there was a band playing. Totally recommend!
s.
It's a good menu and different, nice for the experience and we got a free drink each at the end which was nice but's quite expensive for what you are getting and when it's busy it is a long wait for food.
P. R.
Good service but the cocktails were pretty mild, and the food lacked flavor
M. H.
Fantastic welcome....Fantastic vibe...Fantastic service...Fantastic Beer and Fantastic food....what is not to like about Plaquemine Lock?.....well done Welissa😁
L. M.
I have been there 2 times already, and the first time I was surprised how tasty was the food...never had Luisian cousin before and I had to go back again because I was missing it already. Friendly staff, and the interior is very lovely.
S. C.
Lovely setting on Regent Canal....vis a vis that can be v busy on sunny weekends! Friendly service & cosy. Food looked fab...all usual drinks, hot & cold. Good choice of beer..
A. B.
Very good food but music far too loud. You really need to raise your voice to talk. Won't go back just because of that.
M. P.
Friendly atmosphere, great staff, and good food. I can heartily recommend. Though my father's Deviled Eggs are better. :D
C. a. E. S.
This place definitely plugs a hole in the southern food market in London. Po'boys!! A really enjoyable meal, we will be back to sample the rest of the menu
T. M.
My new favourite pub. Bit different with the new orleans jazz inspired interior. Incredibly friendly staff. Big fan.
j. w.
Brilliant Cajun and Creole food. Cooked oysters a real highlight but we had most of the menu and didn't have a bad dish
J. F.
Had fairly low expectations of the food since the place looks like a theme pub but it was phenomenal. Definitely going back to eat all the things I missed on the menu
E. R.
Thanksgiving dinner done Cajun style
H. A.
Nice food and great atmosphere
E. D.
Interesting food and flavours but not my thing. Cosy spot; tavern vibes with varied range of beers on tap. Intimate feel.
J. E.
Food is a bit pricy for cuisine, but they have great specials ( £1 oysters on Mondays!) and very friendly staff. Fantastic playlists, too.
l. c.
I visited for the first time last week and was blown away by the food, wine selection and especially the manager . Great customer service and a great community feel ! see you Friday
K. B.
Love the oysters especially the Rockefeller and the wine good too.
I. A.
Had food I've never had before and it was all fantastic thanks to the governor
S. M.
Popped in for a drink on the way past and were lucky enough to have live Jazz music being played.
Great atmosphere helps you feel like you have escaped London.
K. P.
Plaquemine Lock is a nice surprise. Balanced and tasty, definitely a place to try. I recommend staying with specialities (chicken, shrimp based dishes)
R. P.
Great atmosphere, service and food. We will return!
G. L.

J. L. (.
Great location, excellent and authentic luisian food, very friendly owner/staff. Round table was just the ticket for our group of eight.

Nice Cajun restaurant in a historical pub by regent's canal. Blackened chicken po boy was delicious, as was the pecan pie.

Great food!
S. C.
Good drink prices and lovely atmosphere on the weekend, for the live jazz
A. B.
Food was okay, although bland at times. I think I’m slightly biased by the fact that I’m not the biggest fan of these flavours (didnt know before eating there). Live music was a nice touch, but WAY too loud - hurt my ear.
N. T.
A little slice of New Orleans in Shoreditch! Decent live jazz and classic NOLA food done properly. And yet also a decent pub - it doesn't overdo the theme.
M. L.
