Reviews of Princess Louise, Holborn
w. t.
What a cool old Victorian place in the heart of London. Amazingly beautiful inside with tile, wood, stained glass and a fireplace. I love the golden interior all around with wooden work. When we went there it was nearly packed, but the bar tender was pouring drinks. Food is upstairs. There are no television screens. This is a place to drink and talk to your friend and family. I can't wait to go back.
D. H.
Outstanding boozer. Ornate, opulent and with an unaltered interior.
Sam Smith's beers make for a reasonable priced pint which is very rare in this area of London.
P. P.
Fantastic Sam Smith's pub in Holborn. Very busy on a Friday night, so we initially sat near a really warm radiator, but then managed to get a really cosy booth right by the bar. The decor is amazing with wood panelling, etched glass panels and Victorian style tiles. The service was great. More reasonable prices than other places in London. Nice strong Imperial stout. Would absolutely recommend a visit here.
G. R.
This is a very beautiful pub in a convenient location. The bar is in the centre and the drinking areas are separated by beautiful screens. There are seldom any free seats and the drink selection is the standard Sam Smith's offering. It's worth stopping in here for one drink to admire the room.
J. D.
Absolutely brilliant. There were even real coal fires. Samuel Smith beers and lagers. Eating only upstairs so ground floor for serious conversation and drinking! The interiors are ravishing. One of the top pubs in London. Went Tuesday lunchtime and very quiet.
J. N.
Unique Sam Smiths pub. If you're not familiar with the place, you could end up in the wrong bar and have no idea what you can order. The layout is nothing like I've ever seen.
Quiet on my visit although there were a few people in the larger bar at the rear on the left hand side.
Sam Smiths used to be renowned for having the cheapest pints in London but not sure if this is any longer the case.
Still gets 5 stars from me however.
J. G.
OMG a public house that is original, beautiful architecture, décor and a good selection of drink, mainly Tadcaster ale & Larger.
I. C.
I love this bar. Very unique decor with lovely ale and great staff
R. J.
Wow, this place is amazing. A must visit if in the area. Great drinks selection & steeped in history.
M. M.
This is a stunning piece of pub architecture, with lovely open fires on a cold day. It's a Sam Smith's pub, so the beer choice is limited to Sam Smith's beer, but you know what you're going to get before you arrive.
B. L.
One of my favourite pubs in London. The decor is amazing and it is great if you can snag a booth. The beer, being Sam Smiths, is reliably good and reasonably priced.
R. E.
Such a treasure of a pub. The original Victorian bar and screens are seriously memorable. The toilets are worth a visit for the listed urinals!
L. H.
Great beer and excellent fish and chips. Not the cheapest place in London but this is the centre of the city and the decor has to be seen to be appreciated. One of London’s classic pub interiors.
D. S.
Victorian splendour, a stones throw away from Holborn Tube Station. The interior decor is fabulous - partitioned space, fully restored to its former glory. I don’t normally take pictures of urinals - but even they are amazing!
I’m not a fan of Samuel Smith beers - personal preference - otherwise would have awarded 5 stars! Although the wheat beer is pretty decent.
Don’t be put off by the rather plain exterior - definitely worth a visit!
M. P.
A Sam Smiths' chain. Always interesting and comfortable surroundings. Own brand beers and spirits can sometimes be disappointing.
D. M.
Probably my favourite pub in town. It's just so beautiful and lovely to be in. Always worth a visit.
R. W.
This pub sells organic beers and some nice soft drinks a bit different from most pubs I've been in nice friendly staff well worth a visit
M. R.
Easily one of the most beautiful and ornate Victorian pub interiors you will ever experience, has got the Wow factor, the exterior is nothing out of the ordinary which belies the beauty within! As it's a Samuel Smith pub the prices are lower than any pubs in the surrounding area. It just may be my personal favourite London boozer. Would give it 10 stars if allowed! Wouldnt normally mention the mens loos but these are properly olde worlde 😀. Great beer choice and very friendly staff. Enjoy . M
S. S.
An architectural gem with an array of spectacular original Victorian woodwork and ceramics, complemented by beautifully reconstructed wood and glass partitions dividing the pub into a series of cosy bars. The luxurious Gents lavatories downstairs are worth a visit on their own.
The overall effect is a great atmosphere ably complemented by a full range of Sam Smith's beers and friendly staff. Overall an excellent pub for a quiet pint and/or an ideal place to bring visitors for a great pub experience.
T. V.
Stopped in this pub for a drink as we had a bit of time to kill before going to the Secret Comedy Club nearby.
It’s got the feel of a traditional pub and much of the decor and architecture seems genuinely original.
Has a generally nice “feel” to it. Handy for the local nightlife and just around the corner from the Grand Lodge of Freemasons.
C. W.
Loved the lay out & decor of this lovely pub. Well worth a visit for this alone. Of course the beer was great too
P. K.
Can't really beat this pub. It's absolutely gorgeous. And as a Sam Smith's pub the drinks and good value and unique. Long may it remain in Sam Smith's hands
S. A.
An Amazing beautiful old pub with lots of little corners to get lost in! Often feels like the pub turns into a complicated puzzle of doors and windows preventing your escape. Food is great and wide selection of drinks.
R. D.
A very traditional looking London pub . Good drinks, great very traditional decor. Those I work with live it.
C. A.
A beautiful Victorian pub. Sam Smith's so their range of beer only but all good of you like them. Attentive and friendly staff when we visited.
R. I.
A pub dripping with history, even the toilets belong in a museum. Great beer and a nice chilled day time atmosphere
A. P. (.
Cool pub with plenty of rooms, alcoves and I think they make some of the beer themselves.
O. K.
Nice place, authentic style but to be honest most of the parts of the decor are replacements. Restrooms like in mcdonalds.
Beer was great and very attractive price.
But so san there is no history about this place, just few words.
C. A. (.
This is a very good pub! It is centrally located and near many of London's sights but at the same time it is not too crowded so it's possible to get a drink and a seat. The atmosphere is relaxed. The decor is traditional and there are several booths located around the bar so if you are in a group, with a friend or on your own it works. The beer is good and they also have organic beer for anyone interested in it.
J. (.
A great Victorian institution, redecorated to be exactly how I remember it in the 1970s, and probably how it was fifty years before that! The food was disappointing, though, and the waitress who calmly announced around 9pm that the twenty or thirty customers should leave the upstairs room where we were all enjoying the evening
M. M.
Busy London ‘Sam Smiths’ Gem of a pub. Time warp back to the 1800’s with the pub sectioned off into multiple cubbies around a central bar, the walls are covered with impressive ceramic tiles, etched mirrors, embossed ceilings, dark wood and solid fuel fires to huddle around. Lovely range of drinks, could drink in here for hours and soak up the ambiance and not get it all. Recommended.
E. G.
Great pub, serves Sam Smiths old brewery bitter which was delicious. Great tiling, glass, wood and lots of small intimate rooms or snugs to dink and chat in. My daughter loved it too, all generations can appreciate real class. Mines a pint, please!
K. O.
Fascinating olde English pub with centuries-old booths, it's like Belfast's Crown Liquor Saloon & compliments don't get any better than that.
M. B.
Beautiful old pub in the heart of High Holborn
G. D. F.
Lovely place in central London. Very old , incredible ambiented Pub with the finest beer you can get and at affordable price. It doesnt have much place to sit but if you wait a little you can get a good spot to drink. Highly recommended.
C.
Another architecturally amazing pub. Samuel Smith's beer but don't let that put you off as it's ok.
L. M.
Cheap pints, lots of sam Adams beers, very cool interior with some interesting, decadent styling. Sectioned bar so you can find a cool bolthole that’s quite private to have a beer in when it’s not too busy.
R. d. B.
Classic London pub of the highest quality complete with panelled private booths for small groups - loved the upstairs lounge too
B. F.
Good service and amazing architectural preservation! The Samuel Smith pubs tend to be the most beautiful in London.
T. K.
I love this pub, individual, aged and fantastic atmosphere, staff were good even though it was extremely busy (university midweek outing). I am glad we searched it out and will be back.
G. W.
Well preserved Victorian Gin Palace, with cheapish Sam Smiths drinks. Only negative point is finding a snug in term- time as often overrun by LSE students.
C. A.
Gorgeous and affordable. This lovingly restored Victorian Gin Palace is a genuine pleasure to visit. Great if you're in this part of town and want to impress a friend or visitor, this deliciously decorated historic pub won't cost you an arm and a leg.
K. M.
Popped in after reading about London gin palaces. Amazing interior! Beautiful and quirky. Little corridors lead to small seating booths, ornate etched glass, tiles and original features. I didn't eat or drink, but will be back. I've stayed at The Hoxton multiple times and never knew this gem was next door!
M. T.
Incredibly cozy and beautiful pub, great location, I especially loved all the fireplaces 😍 totally worth it
N. C.
Really easy to get to, just a few minutes from Holborn station. The dining area upstairs is cosy and has great ambience. Best fish and chips I had in London, really crisp batter. Pies are good too, if a little salty. Good selection of drinks. Everything reasonably priced.
L. B.
Amazing Victorian pub interiors, great tiles and etched glass. Decent beer.
D. G.
A bloody lovely pub. I was absolutely delighted to be taken here by friends on a recent trip to London. For a northerner it was heartbreaking paying as much as it was for a pint but that's just London and me not being use to it 🤣. I will be heading here again next time I'm down this way.
L. C.
Good stout. I wish they'd be serving food on the day of our visit, but the bartender said that they were not.
S. B.
Great little saloon bar that would be perfect for tourists looking for somewhere classically London. Feels very Hogwarts
C. G.
Lovely pub near the British Museum. I love the small compartments which allow for some reduction of the overall noise.
D. H.
Nice pub, close to British Museum. Good visited. A relaxed place to go for a drink. Many different beers and lots of other drinks. Friendly stuff. A cosy place to be.
M. M.
Amazingly beautiful inside with tile, wood, stained glass and a fireplace. When we went there it was packed, but the bar tender was pouring drinks. Food is upstairs. There was 100 people in there the night I was there and not a single person was on their phone. Also there are no television screens. This is a place to drink and talk to your friend and family. I can't wait to go back.
N. B.
Always a top pub. Great location, interior, decor, staff & ale. Everything a pub should be.
J. A.
What a cool old place in the heart of London. I hope this place is preserved for millenniums. Really good beer, especially the stout. We will surely visit this pub again on our Runewood Denmark adventures!
A. H.
Loud...as every pub 😂😂😂food is ok, nothing that would make you want more but they have a good selection of beer. Gammon steak was unbearably salty, though.
L. F.
You cannot go wrong in a Sam Smiths pub in London . In fact if you want an authentic British pub always head to this chain of pubs. They're beautiful, historic with traditional Victorian surroundings. No televisions, no thumping music and great bar staff. They stock beer and cider from their own brewery and its always well priced, especially for London. This pub has small rooms placed around an oval bar in the centre of the room. Don't forget to look up at the ornate ceiling. It's a hidden gem in busy holborn / theatreland.
M. M.
Beautiful bar and friendly staff. Searched the area for traditional pubs and this is what we found. Victorian design and fireplaces. Beer on tap is all from one label. Quite good stout. Perfect pint to end a first day in London after walking 20,000 steps.
J. G.
Always wonderful. Superb architecture. Sam Smith's wonderful beers. Great service
M. S.
One of my favorite pubs in London! If you are visiting from abroad it's really worth calling in. Only a 10 minute walk from covent garden and so much nicer than the overpriced bars there.
M. F.
Superb Sam Smith's pub. Packed with interesting and gorgeous features. Surely one of the best.
N. S.
Amazing Sam Smith pub, standard affair with the beer choices but still at a great price. Lovely little snugs around the bar to have a private experience in the pub atmosphere
S. N.
Refurbished about 15 years ago to bring it back to a Victorian gin palace type of place with cut glass partitions. Worth a visit for the original gents loos and the bottle of oatmeal stout was wonderful
J. G.
It's actually a beautiful pub. Amazing feel. Like stepping back in time. Beer is good too and the staff are great.
S. M.
Superb Sam Smiths pub, beautiful decor & good service. With the usual good beer at such a cheap price for central london.
j.
A beautiful pub. Got a good pint. Recommendable.
Went there another day. Had fish and chips and burger. The burger were good. The fish a bit small and there were not much fish. The taste were good
S. H.
Stunningly beautiful pub serving decent beer and they WILL take the sparkler off if you ask them!
N. E.
A very atmospheric pub. A savour of the past, with original glass mirrors, wooden panelling, seating booths and decorative wall tiles. Sam Smiths beers - pretty good.
A. S.
Best place for hang out with friends. Me and my friends usually came here to enjoy our weekends and vacations. Interior of this place is just amazing and the decor is so beautiful. Must recommend.
J. D.
My favorite London pub a Samuel smiths and been 3, times since July, not twice as you suggested, get you're facts right
W. H.
Great service..great place..great pub!!
Love the beers ..a Samuel Smith pub...
Really great experience...put this on your road map if ever you're in the London/Holborn area!!
M. P.
Beautiful old pub with all traditional features
N. H.
Fabulous pub of Victorian grandeur. Segmented my wooded panels adored with frosted glass inlays, the pub less it’s self well to small to medium groups.
H. B.
Beautiful interior! Interesting partitions for privacy. Good quality beer and service. Can't ask for more! (And clean washrooms).
D. G.
Grade II listed pub in the heart of London, run by Sam Smiths of Yorkshire. Cheap beer, and probably the second-most photographed Gents in the UK
D. R.
A pub with the nost interesting celing in London...lots of stalls and nooks for a private chat.
G.
Great pub with such a wonderfully historic atmosphere in which to find a table and get lost with friend or partner. Nice staff. Fair prices. Well you can get them pretty much anywhere. But the decor and atmosphere is what really draws you in. Would have liked to have stayed longer as the atmosphere was 'busy' and the history just seemed to leak from the walls. A must visit place even just to share a guineas and a shandy with someone special or the gang.
M. M.
Large, beautiful interior. Very close to the tube station. Own brews are served here, but seemed to be of high quality. Upstairs is a larger space, better for conversation whereas downstairs can be more noisy.
N. F.
Went just for a drink to an iconic old London pub. Was served a decent Sam Smith's bitter by friendly bar staff. Met friends and then we decided to have a main course to eat upstairs. I was expecting average pub grub, but was pleasantly surprised by a good helping of good English food - and modestly priced too.
J. R.
A wonderful old pub selling it's own brewed ales and fantastic homemade food at reasonable prices.
M. W.
Some friends and I visited here for a few drinks one Saturday evening. It was quite busy but we were served quickly and found some seating and stayed a while.
It's a Sam Smith's pub - their beers are no bad thing.
It's quite a nice pub - I'd return.
J. H.
Gorgeous pub with lots of space for conversation. The etched glass is truly amazing.
D. C.
Gorgeous Sam Smith's pub. Beautiful tiling and glass work. Usual range of Sam Smith's beers and lagers. Wine range is limited. Can be a bit of a tourist trap and gets very busy at times. Food available but the restaurant didn't seem to be open when I was here.
N. W.
Great pub. Great beer. Go and enjoy a quiet beer
R. R.
Excellent fish and chips and the pies were awesome. Cos was our server both nights we ate there very friendly and the food came very quickly. Best stouts we have had anywhere especially the chocolate stout. They only serve Samuel Smith but the selection of beers from this brewery is ample and diverse enough to find something you will like. Highly recommended if your in the area.
L. H. S.
Loved the woodwork n tiles. Beautiful handcrafted bar!
L. T.
Really enjoy this one. Lovely setup and the urinals are fabulous
T. d. G.
We went there a couple of days ago for a drink and a catch up.The decor is original Victorian and simply stunning. The authentic glass partitioning into private spots around parts of the bar is just lovely and the staff were kind and helpful without rushing. It felt like we'd stepped back in time. It was thoroughly enjoyable after the British Museum. A wonderful interlude on a lovely day.
i. c.
very lovely and decorated pub. It is very popular
T. P.
Not just the best pub in London but probably the best pub in the world
K. W.
Best pub in London. Victorian throughout and beer reasonably priced. Gents must visit the bog. That's Victorian too.
J. W.
Fab pub, very cozy with private booth feel and sam smith's beer
J. D.
It's a really beautiful pub and if you're on a trip to London I'd certainly recommend getting a pint here for the decor alone.
The beer can be a bit touch and go, mind you. Sam Smith's put their London prices up a couple of years ago - back when a pint was £2 I didn't mind so much but now they're a bit dearer it's less OK. The bottles tend to be nicer than the pints. I wouldn't wash my dog in the wine. But you're not there for quality beer, you're there for the atmosphere, which is amazing.
t. k.
Even by Sam Smiths standards, this is a beautiful pub with engraved, frosted glass, Old fashioned partitions around the bar, but also some good sized seating areas when meeting groups. Great value drinks too, particularly by London standards, and a very convenient location. A lovely pub.
B.
Lovely old fashioned decor and traditional pub style
J. C.
V welcoming, 1st day opening no draft beer, expected the next day. Pleasant staff, loads of character pub.
M. H.
Gorgeous unique pub with a horseshoe bar and a oak paneling diving into many small rooms and snubs...with beautiful glass panels adding to the aged look. Sells some excellent Sam Smith IPA and organic wheat beer, both worth trying. Could do with another member of staff behind the bar so loses one star!
E. S.
Pleasant pub. Very agreeable prices and Samuel Smith offer a fair range of beer. Decor is unique and quite pretty, though the hustle and bustle detracts a bit. It gets very busy here! Often you can find a table upstairs, where it's also generally much quieter. Can't speak for the food.
J. H.
This was my first visit here, with a group of friends, some of whom have been here before. I interacted with a few different staff members during the evening and I find that they were mostly friendly, patient and helpful, although once upstairs had closed the downstairs staff more or less told us to piss off outside, so we took the hint.
I had a look through the food menu for dinner, but it is all on the rather pricey side for pub food so I just had a tiny pie for £3.50 (cut into about 4 mouthfuls.
I drank Taddy, which was good.
The decor etc upstairs is pleasant.
Downstairs seems to be completely screwed off into private booths which is interestingly different... but very wasteful of space if it's full of small parties of 2-4 people, as they'd hold twice as many people, bit you're probably not going to share a private area with strangers.
The tall etched glass screens date back to the Victorian age, so are a piece of history, but they don't afford any real privacy as there are people walking past, the barman right there, and as the screens are made of glass they don't keep conversation noise in or out. All they'd really help with is stopping other people in the room checking you out.
There were 8+ of us so we needed to go upstairs as the downstairs booths were mainly full with couples or small groups. The screens make it quite bewildering for a first time visitor as you can't see how to get around the pub or see if there's anywhere to order a drink.
I only saw a single unisex toilet upstairs and it wasn't all that clean.
W. T.
Pretty good beer and cool English pub!
S. W.
This beautiful pub is nearly, for me, all about the wonderful ornate interior. The glass and mirror work, fittings, and the super cool booths are really quite a sight. The beer is of course all Sam Smith and although well priced a bit pedestrian in style for the modern age.
J. T.
Old London pub which serves Sam Smith beers. Best value for London and in the heart to the city
M. F.
My favourite.pub in London. Anyone who visits the British Museum should take the trouble of the five minute detour to visit this prime example.of a high Victorian pub. Glorious glasswork and a very fine (restored) interior. As winter approaches it becomes better -- the lit interior is as good as it gets.
R. A.
This place looks great. Really quirky layout. It's worth a visit just for that. Cheap place to come otherwise
T. B.
Absolutely fantastic traditional London pub.
J. K.
A great traditional British pub. Original victorian decor and a grade 2 listed urinal...
J. B.
Beautiful old pub with lots of little corners to get lost in! Lovely coloured glass panelling and a nice range of beers. As with most London pubs gets a bit crowded at times but worth a visit if you are in the area
A. G.
Lovely Pub with organic beers, very friendly staff
D. W.
A fabulous building. As well as monumental men's loos, there is beautiful etched glass and mahogany partitions. But, on Tuesday evening it had a severe shortage of any beer.
M. P.
Really nice place. I love their cherry Beer. The portions could have been a bit larger as we were very hungry after a day of walking. Very cozy interior.
C. S.
I like this pub. Though it is Greene king affiliated it had a really good beer selection. There was an excellent gin selection and my partner and I managed to try a few we had bot seen in pubs before. We did not eat but the menu looked good and the food people were eating o the tables around us looked tasty.
C. O.
Stunning and beautifully restored Victorian Interior. Good range of drinks , well kept, food available. Staff friendly. 5 minute walk from Holborn tube and British Library.
Most definately worth a visit
L. R.
Lovely little pub, very unique architecture with lots of small sections rather than a large room. Owned by the brewery too so prices are pretty cheap but, all their own drinks so no big brands. Quality of the drinks is great though
T. B.
A pity that the place doesn't have outdoor space, but otherwise it is really nice. There are a few small rooms on the ground floor and decent space for eating on the first. The beer selection is moderate, but would still cater for most tastes
K. K.
Highly recommend stopping here. The inside has an old style pub feel while having lots of small booths situated around the outside of the bar to increase privacy. Also there is a good range of different beers to choose from.
M. W.
Good beer and amazing interior.
M. R.
Great service upstairs, excellent chicken pie, cider and sticky toffee pudding. On a rainy day, the fireplace made the room so cozy. We planned on eating at The Ship down the street but they were full--how lucky for us!
The bar downstairs was packed, but there are a few snugs and a working fireplace down there, too. We'll definitely be back!
A. R.
I enjoyed this old London pub! It has furnishings going back to the Victorian era together with some extreme quirkiness such as enclosed "private" cubicles surrounding the bar. If there is a group of you then the cubicles are ideal, as they provide a convivial atmosphere and you will enjoy a good time.
D. R.
A real gem of a pub, only visited because their sister pub (Philomenas) was shut for renovation that night. Went on a Monday, was a nice vibe and just the right amount of people. Usual fare on tap. Great staff working, really made us feel at home. Highly recommended.
A. H.
Lovely interior, pity about the small selection of ales.
J. R.
Intimate Samuel Smith's bar. There are multiple larger and smaller seating/bar areas, so it can take a while to find an open spot. If a chocolate stout sounds at all good to you, make sure you try the one here. It's the best I've found. The oatmeal stout and nut brown ale are also really good.
G. R.
I find the atmosphere here especially welcoming and relaxing, perfect for a pleasant night out with friends over some drinks and chats. We usually while away Friday evenings here, and whether it's just my husband and I, or we have friends joining us, the evenings here are some of the most pleasant and enjoyable ones I can remember. Food is great and the selection of beer and wine is extensive even though by now we already have our favourite choices and combinations, so we hardly look at the menu. With its Victorian charm and intimate setting, this pub is a true gem.
M. T.
Best Pup I know so far in this area! Good service, good drinks. Nothing is mainstream....
R. H.
We were a group of 12 people and enjoyed fantastic service & a friendly welcome from the upstairs restaurant. Typical Pub food, well presented, good value and very tasty. Will definately return. Recommended highly
Z. H.
The bar staff are friendly and it's a standard Sam Smith affair with the exception of the interiors. The upstairs area is spacious and compared to a lot of central London pubs, you have a good chance of getting seats an tables upstairs. Downstairs is another matter. The area around the oval shaped bar is surrounded by great big wooden dividers at regular intervals so that each divider forms a private alcove with one side facing the bar and the opposite end of each alcove has a doorway to give it privacy from the corridor. If you get one of these to your party, it's quite lovely.
Z. P.
This can only be described as a really, really pretty pub... with gorgeous wood panelling and ornate details, it's gloriously Victorian. My favourite thing about this place is the little booths that you can get around the bar (they're like tiny little rooms that can hold about 6 people). They're the first to go though if the pub is busy so I'm yet to actually get inside one... next time hopefully. Gin drinkers, be aware that they only sell one type of gin here – the house gin, which is thankfully pretty nice, but I would prefer a choice really.
R. S.
Great decor (something a bit different). Beer is nice and very cheap for this part of London. It's a Sam Smith's pub so you won't find any of the regular brands here, or music, or TVs - that's what makes it a great old school boozer!
C. R.
I definitely deserves an stop, get a pint enjoy the details, the weird kinda of drinking booth
A. S.
Super nice Victorian pub with booths and typical Sam Smith's selection. If you're meeting someone there meet outside or be prepared to wander around the pub trying to find them.
M. H.
Any Samuel Smiths pub is a bonus, and this place is the grand lady of them all. It used to be open plan, but they really tarted it up with screen dividers which made some spaces much smaller. The beer is great though and if your into art, it is a great place to look into interior history as mostly it is from the Victorian times. Go take your friends and admire the art while having a sovereign beer. Don't go on a Friday night when you won't get near the bar!
L. F.
Absolutely stunning Victorian pub with brass, glass and dark wood everywhere. A great selection of Sam Smith's beers at insanely low prices and loads of interesting period features like cosy booths off to the side of the bar and interesting tilework in the corridors. It gets busy on a Friday or Saturday night, but definitely worth visiting regularly.
M. J.
Beautiful old Victorian gin palace, with private bar screens still intact (or reinstalled, we couldn't work out which). Exceptionally good value because it's a Sam Smith's pub (but that also means you can't ****ing swear or you'll get barred (I'm serious)). Don't expect name brand beers, it's their own or nothing (but their own is cheap and tasty). Wine selection consists of 'red' or 'white', so definitely not a place to go if you like wine.
C. N.
Beautiful interior a proper old fashioned styled pub, nooks and crannies, separate little booths, etched and stained glass windows. Reasonably priced for a central pub. Loved it.
e. s.
Wonderful old style pub with great selection of beers and spirits from Yorkshire
I. S.
Came here on on Monday night before Christmas and had a great time :) The crowd was great and every one was friendly, including customers and staff. It was pretty busy and noisy inside and took a while to find our group going through the labyrinth of the pub :) The area upstairs was only available for those who had a meal.
Overall, this is a lovely old-fashioned pub in London with excellent selection of drinks, including my favourite stout :)
J. D.
This is one of London's best traditional pubs. The interior is a beautiful old Victorian style, with lots of private alcoves as well as more open spaces. The ales are good and fairly priced, and there is a great, cosy atmosphere in the whole pub.
R. P.
Great Victorian pub with original tiled Walsall and mirrors. Private personal enclosure seating surrounded by carved woodwork and Victorian etched glassware. Wonderful traditional all wooden bar great oldie feel with very good cheap beers on tap.
A. H.
We were upstairs. The food was excellent (nachos, fish & chips, everything). The drink was also awesome and the staff very kind. Very calm place to have a break. One of the best places we can found.
D. N.
The first thing you'll notice about this old pub is the glass! There is seemingly endless amounts of cut glass everywhere making lots of alcoves and dens to give you some privacy. The drinks selection was reasonable, and all-in-all not a bad place to stop in for one, though I don't think it's somewhere that I'd be inclined to spend an evening in.
K. P.
Old fashioned pub with original tiles / enclosed seating at the bar. Fabulous old timey authentic atmosphere.
E. M.
I've recently went to this pub for the first time, and one of the main reasons why I decided to visit a place like this, was all the positive comments of my colleagues. The pub itself is great - the atmosphere is lovely and I just can't wait to come back. The food was brilliant and more importantly, reasonably priced. Stunning place.
E. B.
Interesting pub laid out with lots of separate booths around a central bar. Nice and cosy and intimate if you're able to get a booth just to yourself or for your group.
Aside from that, good beer at reasonable prices.
D. d. P.
You have to have had a beer here once for the sheer Victorian beauty of the place. And then you'll come back. Craft beer snobs may scoff at Samuel Smith, but their nut brown ale is a favorite of mine, and when have you last had a pint of stout in London for 3.75? Love the place.
o. m.
Used to stop by after work. The pub is kept traditional with booths and snugs like in the 1950s. Pleasant to have a short, bag of crisps and a pint that’s all from the Sam Smith Brewery.
E. W.
Old pub. Greatly preserved Victorian era with authentic "private" cubicles surrounding the bar. Beer and spirits as in any other Samuel Smith pub. High standard. But staff not attentive and not trained. With a little bit of attitude. We decided not to eat.
K. M.
Fantastic old-fashioned pub with small partitioned sections. Mirrors and tiles everywhere. Only problem is when there is only one staff member serving; I watched two groups of people waiting to be served in the section I was in while other, just arrived, got served in other sections. The problem with multi-partitioned pubs; You need lots of good vigilant well trained staff. When's the last time you experienced that in a British pub?
I. A.
Organic fruit beers, oak booths, and interesting etched glass panels.
H. Z.
Visited the restaurant at around 1pm. There was only one waitress doing all the work which meant that service was slow, although she did a great job. We had to go up to the bar to order, and food came quickly.
The atmosphere in here was quite quiet, even though there were a few other occupied tables. The decor is very authentic and I personally liked it very much.
I had a chicken burger, which was pretty standard. The chips need some work - they were rustic, but some were a bit too thick which meant they were a tad undercooked. I also had an apricot flavoured beer, which was pretty good.
Overall, it cost just over £10. The card machine was playing up, but the waitress dealt with it professionally. For Central London, the price wasn't bad.
Personally, I think there are better places to go to get the same food (without the beer, of course).
A. M.
Superb old Victorian decor pub in central London. One of my fav. Love the samual smith selection of ales and lagers. Great value for the £ per pint.
n. p.
Princess Louise is probably the most visually impressive pub I have ever set foot in - it feels more like a living museum for what a traditional pub should actually be like. There's more ornately carved timber here than you'd expect to see in a cathedral. If you like sitting in a booth while you rehydrate/chat then this is the place for you, they're actually built into the bar so no chance of losing the booth at beer time. There are no mainstream beers/spirits which is great if you like to try more local offerings - this is a Samuel Smith pub and it's all by them.
R. C.
Classic old school Sam Smith's pub with beautiful interior. Segmented bar into booths which can be a little confusing though allows for privacy. Great place to drink, but best to meet people outside.
A. B.
I love the cosy atmosphere, it's very welcoming and affable and I always enjoy an evening with friends here. I still can't figure out if they're really always booked or just don't take reservations since all of my efforts to book in advance have been unsuccessful. I like the food, the beer selection is extensive and staff are friendly. A summer night out on the terrace is splendid. And if it's not very summery in terms of temperatures, you get your own blankie. How lovely does this place get?
T. S.
Great beer and drinks, only disorganised. My friend called the pub a month before the visit trying to book a table for her party, was told it wasn't necessary and we ended up standing most of our time there. The staff didn't try to make us happy (all we got was sorry, can't do anytime for you). Nice quiet and historic place otherwise
P. B. (.
Another old favourite pub, a stone's throw from Oxford St and the British Museum, gets lots of post-shopping trade and tourists. The pub is split into lots of little booths, so if you're quick, you can have a little area all to you and your friends. And as its a Sam Smith's pub, super cheap drinks!
V. M.
Pub was quiet and pleasant. In terms of covid-19 health and safety it would have been more reassuring if we had been asked for contact details and if hand sanitiser had been in evidence.
m. a.
One of my favourite pubs in town .
F. R.
Wonderful food and great service, I would definitely go there again
J. G.
A beautiful old gin palace with an authentic London atmosphere, great selection of reasonably priced Sam Smiths beers, decent food. Can't help but recommend the place where I met my wife!
S. H.
This is a really lovely Sam Smith's pub really close to Holborn station. It's cosy and has a lovely atmosphere. Prices are reasonable for Central London. Annoyingly they don't take bookings of any kind even if you guarantee a large group.
G. S.
Classic old style Victorian boozer - large windows - huge wooden central serving area/bar - high ornate ceilings. Main interest is the snugs/alcoves down each side of the central bar. These are wood panelled - great if a few are gathered together.
Beer is Sam Smith's - best options in my view are the Old Brewery Bitter (cask) or Export Stout (which is a contrast to Guinness draught ).
A. L.
I absolutely love the atmosphere and decor here - it's a typical English pub that makes a great spot for enjoying some drinks after work or at weekends and having a chat over a pint in one of the small booths. Prices are fair for this part of London. Staff are very friendly and great with customers and service in my experience has always been fast and polite.
m. t.
Loved this pub . Staff friendly. Customer we're happy to chat. Which is what we find in most Sam Smith's pub. That why we like them . Plus the good beer
N. T.
The restaurant was closed so we just had a beer at the bar. Friendly place, great atmosphere, good beer. Came back a few nights later and had dinner. The fish and chips was really good.
I. R.
Beautiful Victorian ornate pub with wood lined walls and mirrors. Sam Smith's pub, so if you like their beers great, if not, tough. Sam Smith's prices though, so bargain prices for London
J. G.
A unique, yet very traditional pub experience in central London. I like Sam Smith's pubs because it feels like stepping back in time and ordering some off-brand beer, rather than the typical power pints common in most pubs in the UK. But I recommend this pub in particular for its location, its incomparable ground floor of oaky nooks teeming with local accents, and also for its more reserved quiet space on the first floor with lots of comfy couches and seating that make it an ideal rendezvous for meeting in the city. And with the nice selection of affordable beers from Sam Smith's on tap, you might just want to linger a little longer.
B. B.
Proper pub, it can be very hard to get a table at the Victorian bar downstairs but it's worth persevering. Nice unpretentious selection of beers and ciders, and the bar staff are prompt and helpful.
D. d. V.
Who doesn't love a Sam Smith's pub? This particular one has lots of little nooks and crannies for talking to your friends of even holding a business meeting. The only thing I will say, that isn't the fault of the pub, is that the phone signal in there is terrible and there seemed to be no bar wifi, making it really difficult to keep an eye on things when you're in there.
c. y.
Very interesting place with Victorian decor, without feeling too old fashioned. The place has a bar in the middle with small rooms around the bar (with one side of the room being the bar). If you're going as a large group, there are rooms that fit a larger amount of people. Only reason why it's not a 5 is because they only sold drinks made by Smith Samuels brewery (also with wine and spirits), which wasn't really in line with my appetite. I would've liked a Guinness or crabbies ginger beer
H. N.
SUPER fun, SUPER cheap pub. Very cute atmosphere, cool partitioning of the bar. Friendly staff. Not much of a liquor selection, but the prices were unbelievably cheap. I'd come back for sure!
M. F. S.
Friendly and open place to share thoughts and emotions. A good place to share drinks and memories with friends and colleagues. Affordable drinks and value of money. Great time spend with a friend. Happy meal. Happy drinks.
E. K.
pictures cannot capture how beautiful a pub this is. owned by samuel smiths brewery, so they only serve their range of beer and cider, but the prices are reasonable, you don't feel like you are in need of different brands with their selection.
E. S.
One of my favorite pubs in London. The interior is worth visiting for alone but to top it off it's a Sam Smith's so probably the cheapest beer you will find in London
K.
Good pub, busy but friendly.
S. P.
A gem of a pub. Ornate Victorian craftsmanship throughout - tiling, carved mahogany, ceilings.
The pub comprises a number of small rooms or snugs at ground floor level, and the dining room on the floor above.
Normal pub fare on the menu ... no aspirations towards ghastly 'gastropub' status here. My companion and I both took the burger, which was absolutely fine and dandy.
It's a Sam Smith's house, so the price of beer is much lower than in most London pubs. The Old Brewery Bitter is as reliable - and quaffable - as ever. Soft and soapy thanks to the Yorkshire water.
A. H.
Good friends are for taking your phone away when you decide to drunk-text your ex, to give you comfort and support, and to take you to new places, places like this one. The Victorian atmosphere was really impressive while welcoming, and the selection and prices of the beer simply made my evening. Great place, a real quintessential traditional pub with a decent menu and friendly staff.
J. W.
Been coming here for more than 30 years. Great traditional London pub which has great atmosphere amid the older world decor. One not to miss!
R. R.
Superb internal decoration, Lovely tiled loos, Samuel Smiths beer. This is one of my favourite pubs in London, if just for the decor. It's in Holborn, just a few streets away from Covent Garden. If you can, try and get one of the booths in the bar. Great if you're with a few friends.
J. R.
One of the most beautiful watering holes in England - a must visit if you want to see the quintessential English pub in all its splendour. It's owned by Sam Smith's Brewery, so it only sells their beers and, as with their other pubs, has no music or fruit machines.
S. R.
Great pub. Great beers.
R. M.
Beautiful old fashioned pub with private booths at the bar, tiled walls and floors, and gleaming brass everywhere. Sam Smiths so good beer and relatively cheap for central London.
d. m.
A quality Sam Smiths. A must for a London trip
D. S.
Good selection of beers, one cider, food was great.
W. P.
One of the best 'authentic' pubs in London. Like all Sam Smiths pubs, it feels homely and friendly and most of the pints are still until £3.60. get here early on a weekday and you can get one of the private booths, some even back onto the bar so you wont need to move more than a few meters all night (though beer = toilet breaks). Speaking of toilets, its the only negative - there is only one small toilet for the men (for 1). I'm nitpicking though - its a brilliant pub in the Heart of London. Go when you get the chance.
E. A.
I aim to end up sitting in one of the lovely private booths (which are more like little wooden parlours) but it's really busy and rightfully so. The drinks are cheap and they stock really tasty crisps. I wish there was more standing space but it's always worth it.
M. D.
Absolutely love this pub. I'm a big fan of the traditional old school boozer, no music or television which is welcomed when having a conversation. Can't really go wrong with Sam Smith's watering holes.
A. Z.
A really quirky but comfortable place to have lunch. The burger I got was succulent, although the chips that came with it were a bit hard/crunchy rather than fluffy inside. The service was extremely friendly and for one person taking the whole floor by herself, she did a great job. I recommend getting there before 1pm to avoid the lunchtime rush as it's not a huge place, and they close at 3.
M. H.
Excellent pub. Enjoyed it.
K. G.
The Princess Louise is such a unique pub - it's split up into different sections, divided by beautiful frosted glass panels and wooden doors, so if you're lucky you can end up with a little booth all to yourself! They serve gorgeous bottles of fruity beer and great crisps too.
S. D.
Busy, buzzy old-fashioned pub. It's Sam Smiths, which means unusual spirits & beers plus amazing prices - £2.38 for a glass of red wine! Beautiful decoration too, with wooden private booths. Loved it!
M. M.
Great place... Fun atmosphere. Good cold pints.
g. w.
A decent pub crowned by some of the finest tiled toilets in London. Worth a trip in themselves. Always drink the organic lager at a Sam Smiths. It's great.
C. W.
Classic historic pub with vintage glass/ mirrors and cubicles that feels like you've stepped back in time. Supported by Sam Smiths wide range of drinks that are well priced compared to most other pubs.
M. M.
Very cozy pub. It is split into multiple rooms around the bar, which allows to host many people and everyone can enjoy easy bar access. Samuel Smith's beers from tap.
S. H.
An interesting layout and was quite comfortable because it wasn't busy. But with so many internal doors I can imagine it would be very uncomfortable when it is really packed. I'm quite claustraphobic and would not stay in this pub when full.
S. M.
It's nice to have a place in central London where you can spend some time with friends and enjoy good food and beer without scrimping and saving weeks prior to that. It's a typical English pub with a good selection of food and drinks at reasonable prices. We all enjoy the signature Victorian atmosphere and friendly service and are really happy to have a few laughs and forget about our students loans once in a while.
A. B.
A fantastic pub in Holburn, lovingly restored to its former glory by the pub chain owners. The mens toilets are listed as they are original to the pub, bizarre but true. The decor is what sets this pub apart from others in the area. Based on the old London gin palaces, the horseshoe bar is divided into booths with a larger drinking area at the back. Its worth a visit to look at the detail of the workmanship.
The pub serves a good range of drinks, from the brewery, So you wont find and of the usual name brand beers but a decent selection of their own brews which aren't too bad and very reasonably priced.
A. C.
Quintessential English pub serving hand pulled bitter amongst other drinks, food also served at meal times. If you’re into beer or English culture, give it a try.
D. M.
My favourite sams pub in London.lovely staff and if you can get a Victorian booth to yourself.perfect social distancing.
G. Q.
Samuel Smith's variety. You get your own section of the bar if you get to it, as it is literally sectioned. Seems alright, right on a busy street but 'Strictly No Drinking Outside' according to the sign and area. Is alright and seems as old traditional (except for the sectioning I've never seen before)
M. W.
Great pub. Great beer. With a few snugs, but don't go in late if there is a group of you if you want to get in a snug. Holborn station and many buses nearby, so easy to get to. Can't fault it.
J. P.
It's cheap and it's actually really nicely decked out. Obviously it's a Sam smiths pub so you can only get their products, and wine is three options (red, white and rosé) but very pleasant for a pint.
L. O.
Beautiful old gin palace, restored to its former glory by Samuel Smiths. Fantastic range of organic drinks (try the cherry fruit beer!). A tourist attraction and a lovely place to eat and drink :)
R. M.
The interior decoration is beautiful and gives the idea of a really traditional British Pub: so does the food and the atmosphere. The guy upstair was nice enough. One negative point, an unpleasant smell in the whole place.....
J. L.
Unlike the 'chain' pubs where you know what you are getting before you enter, this place is a little different with a unique layout and decor.
Well worth a visit for something a bit different, just be aware they do not sell all the normal branded beers and spirits.
C. F.
A gem of a pub. Beautiful traditional interior and reasonably priced beer.
And for history buffs, it has a great example of public and private bars- a product of our once rigid class system.
m. S.
Very old fashion pub in the Hart of London
I. N.
Victorian pub in Holborn. Its very old heritage decorations and wooden booths make it unique and cozy. They have a good selection of beers and the staff is friendly and fast. Very close to Holborn station and in front of my favourite pancake restaurant in London. The peculiar floor plan reserved a large oval space in the middle for the bar staff area. You go around and get into a booth or the front of the bar to order. A bit labyrinthic, but curios set up.
R. M.
this is a slightly unusual pub in the way the floor plan is broken up into lots of little booths.. if its a quiet afternoon it can be ace to get yourself a little space and have a cheap drink. There is a space for eating upstairs but I've never been tempted..
However it can be a nightmare when busy to push through and find people with the multiple doorways.
A. S.
Fantastic old boozer, great service, well priced and large selection of sam smiths beers. If you are lucky enough to get a booth, it's easy to stay here for hours on end.
Great after work crowd, creating a laid back yet buzzy atmosphere for all.
P. T.
An interesting labyrinth of different cubbyholes to share with other strangers.. or not. The atmosphere is unphased by the divisions of frosted glass throughout the pub as the bar takes the central focus. Toilets are only on one side of the pub which may require a quick exit and re-entry strategy to get to it from the other side.. and they smell.
This pub reminds me of the old pacman map plan, and I love it.
J. E.
Such a cool pub. Straight out of Victorian Britain, decked on ornate tiles and mirrors, this is quite a place. And it serves cracking beers too.
D. N.
Nice style pub. Sam Smiths an unusualy addition to London beer scene. Large room, with tiles, wood, partitions makes this a good place for visitors to get get an echo of old London pub.
P. B.
The best Sam Smiths pub I've ever drunk in. Rudi the manager is one of the most approachable people I've met. Which is the best trait you can have in this business. Donal is quick with a joke and always smiling. He is alert to his patrons needs.
The staffs knowledge of the drinks is second to none. They remember your favourite beverage, which is touching. This personal touch in a pub where they serve so many people shows the quality of the staff.
They will suggest drinks that will exceed your expectations. If you want a real treat ask for Donal's New Zealand Special or Rudi's Pink G'n'T.
This is a very special Sam Smiths.
d. m.
Proper pub, beautiful interior. Shame it's Samuel Smith's- beer's not great.
M. M.
Visiting this pub is like traveling back in time. Very chilled vibe, with private little compartments around the bar - and a museum piece as a gent's urinal :-)
K. B.
I went to Princess Louise because it was recommended to me by a professor. I have to say that it wasn't the best pub for people my age (20). This place is definitely meant for an older crowd, but the prices were affordable and the cider is good.
M. K.
This pub is very close to where I used to work at. A few times we headed out for after work drinks after hard day of meetings. The service was always timely and very polite
I. T.
Old style pub with the bar divided into small areas. Dinning room upstairs with pub grub. A samuel smith pub so only their bands but good value. Recommend
R. B.
One of the best examples of a Victorian pub in London, the small booths and intricate design are fun to explore. Sam Smith beer is great as always. Very reliable place to visit near Holborn Station.
E. H.
Delicious food, I had the sausage and mash and it was great. Rare to find a proper pubby pub in central London. Great selection of beers too
P. D.
Stunning interiors beautiful kept in this fantastic Sam Smiths pub. Distinctive snugs, glass, and wood panelling everywhere - if only more pubs had been left well alone like this gem
A. D.
Fantastic Samuel Smith's pub. Bar segmented into booths. Great selection of their own extremely varied collection of drinks. A must visit venue.
D. A.
One of Sam Smiths best and most interesting pubs near Holborn station, it is supposedly one of the best examples of a Victorian pub in London. The ground floor has booths the bar which offer privacy to small groups and gives you easy access to order another drink. At the back on each side are slightly larger spaces, one with an open fire which is nice in Winter. The toilets are a bit dank and the upstairs is nothing special but if you can get an area around the bar it's a winner. Across the road is "My Old Dutch" pnacake house which is ideal for a bite to eat after some drinks.
T. B.
I really like the fact that this is not your 'run of the mill' pub. The cubby holds and non-standard beers make for great alternative and surprisingly cheaper drinking in central london.
J. T.
Stunning interior and great service. Often feels like the pub turns into a complicated puzzle of doors and windows preventing your escape.
Well worth a visit.
D. G. I.
Very cool building and architectural style. Unfortunately, the food was hit-or-miss. Two of our dishes were completely over cooked (maybe the frier was having a bad day), but the others were good. Maybe this is just a drinking kind of place.
P. D.
Good and very beautiful Sam Smith pub. Lots to recommend it but very busy and long wait for the bar. Toilets smelt. Buy worth a go
T. A.
Lots of beers at very good prices for the area. The saloons can make for limited space at busy times but otherwise a pleasant pub.
J. T.
Princess Louise is a really nice Victorian pub. It has great atmosphere - not too busy or not too quiet. The dividers are exquisitely designed and prove a really useful tool to achieve privacy. The interiors of the pub are also really pretty.
P. J. A. C.
I liked this place very much, the way the pub is divided in like different mini rooms is really nice. You can feel you have privacy, but actually it's all open to everybody. Very particular!
S. I.
Great atmosphere, very modest prices below what you would expect in London and the pub has some wonderful features and lovely unusual booths. Go out of hours to grab one with your friends
L. C.
The Princess Louise is an intimate gem in Holborn. A Samuel Smith's pub, the building contains all it's original victorian Gin palace features - a bar with separated booths, beautiful tiling and glass work everywhere and paneled wooden walls. Its cozy atmosphere makes you want to stay there forever. It can be difficult to find a seat during busy periods (such as after work hours) but most other times of the day you can disappear into a corner, enjoy a lovely beer and while away the hours. Highlights of Samuel Smith's drinks include the Fruit beers (Cherry, Raspberry), wheat beer and sour mash whisky. Oh and the bar snack are great too!
B. T.
Quirky Sam Smiths pub. The place is like a maze with a large central bar, and little rooms divided around it. Feels very private for small groups.
S. L.
A Sam Smith's pub with a fantastically intact 'gin palace' style interior. Good prices and service. Due to this it gets very busy with post-work drinkers.
S. M.
One of the best pubs in London, staff are good, great selection and surprisingly reasonable prices, worth visiting just to check out the grand old interior and one of my favourite places to get on the sesh and get smashed!
M. C.
Love this bar. Good selection of whiskey and other things.
T. S.
Perfect for after work drinks. Sam Smiths pub so it's cheap too. The bar area is amazing with its little glass booths and it even has antique urinals!
C. G.
Great pub with lots of nooks you can find a seat in and have some good conversation. Nice beer selection. Great place to stop for a pint.
S. R.
One of my favourite pubs in London. Classic decor, great prices and a classic atmosphere for a central London drinking establishment.
n. R.
Great bar with its traditional decor and divided off areas. Good range of interesting beers as well. Just beware of the toilet grate!
M. T.
Old English style pub. Very authentic . Amazing staff . They were about to close but still served us. Went for a couple of pints and they were delicious.
M. B.
Awesome experience, good prices. Check out the individual booths at the bar
T. T.
Beautiful decor with the most intricate Victorian details. The staff is amazing and the Sam Smith beer is probably my favorite English draught. Cozy and comfortable.
C. T.
This is a great pub which has just got a whole lot better thanks to new management who have invigorated the staff, cleaned up the place and now making in a real pleasure to go in for a pint of lovely Yorkshire Old Brewery Ale
S. M.
Even though this might not have the most auspicious list of drinks for beer lovers, the atmosphere adn decoration in this London staple are awesome. Even from the outside, the Princess Louise looks something special. Step inside and you're entering another time. The booths and glass panels are beautiful and the staff are just what you'd hope for from a proper london pub.
K. P. (.
Came by for some afterwork pints and absolutely fell in love with all the little nooks in this place! It's adorable and cosy with a friendly neighbourhood feel - even though it's just by Holborn Station. They serve Sam Smiths so expect a good pint, and they also have chilli peanuts. Yum!
Either get here early for a seat, or wait till about 7.30pm and all the seats will free up.
M. T.
Excellent draught 🍺 beer
H. H.
Very busy, but still one of the loveliest pubs in London. The upstairs room is just magnificent. Ales and beers are very reasonable priced.
L. G.
One of the most beautiful pubs in London. I love it. On Friday it is too full of people. The beer is cheap and the crisps are awesome
V. H.
Amazing attentive service, beautiful place, good selection of beers. Original downstairs area with separate booths, and cozy upstairs open area. Great place for groups.
s. s.
An absolute gem of a pub in central London brilliant staff idilic surrounds wow 10/10
J. M.
Sam smiths pub in central location so lots of plus points for the prices. its an old traditional pub with lots of different sections, quite dark. Great if you like old pubs but not for me
D. N.
Worth a visit just to soak in the architecture. Wood paneling, glass, mirrors and tiling. It's really very beautiful. Decent Beer top, and the barmaid on duty was ace. Just saying.
P. C.
Great beer and nachos, but the staff aggressively move on anyone upstairs who's finished their food. The place was half empty, but barely had the last chip passed our lips and they were on our case.
C. J.
Awesome stop for any American! A REAL pub from Victorian times. Wonderful atmosphere, good food and friendly, helpful staff. Fish & Chips and Bangers & Mash. Relax and enjoy!
T. W.
Excellent old pub, fantastic atmosphere and great Samuel Smiths ales. The Imperial porter in particular is wonderful. Friendly staff too.
D. F.
Good size large pub, nice atmosphere but not much choice of wine (three types, red, white, rose that's it) and the fish and chips was very soggy!
S. J.
One of my favorite pubs in London. Exquisite Victorian workmanship everywhere with numerous cubbyholes for small groups. Samuel Smith range on tap.
d. d.
Beautiful decor with the most intricate Victorian details. The staff is amazing and then beer is probably my favorite English draught. Good and comfortable.
S. M.
Amazing old Sam Smith pub, downstairs has glass booths around bar and upstairs is more open dining hall.
F. V.
Wonderful interior decor, decent prices for the drinks (we didn't ate during this visit). The staff is really friendly (at least upstairs).
K. P.
Old fashioned Porta to drink here
A. S.
The Princess Louise is one of those pubs that's perfect for out-of-towners. It's beautiful, seems a hundred years old and feels very English. Surprisingly it's not full of tourists and drinks are very well-priced.
The interior of Princess Louise is amazing. It looks a little like a glass and wood maze, with lots of doors leading to hidden cubby holes. Really charming.
However. A pub this lovely doesn't stay secret for long and at 7pm on a Friday you'll be lucky to get a seat.
G. L.
Lovely Victorian pub now run by Samuel Smith's. Usual range of SS's beers. Really friendly and welcoming staff.
S. M.
Very Busy Sam Smiths Pub, so the beer is a bit cheaper. Fantastically Ornate interior. We visit here every time we go to London.
C. B.
Amazing Pub with fabulous staff, even if you don't like Sam Smith's you HAVE to visit this pub to see it inside!!
K. K.
My first choice pub when meeting friends in London. Nice beers, reasonably priced and such great traditional surroundings.
a. m.
Old school pub with Victorian glass fittings and booths (no tv or slot machines - yay!) Can be busy, but has great atmosphere if you can grab a seat - beer is cheap too!
J. C.
This place has a great atmosphere- mainly down to its cosy design. Not a great selection of beers, but what they do, they do well. The staff were pretty good, but this place is all about how it feels. Will be back!
J. C.
Sam Smith pub (cheap, varied, own-brand drinks) with some of the most beautiful tiling you'll find in a London pub. Impressive glasswork too, dividing the bar up into cosy little partitions.
D. F.
Really like this little pub, has sectioned off rooms around the bar. Good and reasonably priced drinks
F. B.
Old style pub with Victorian etched glass panels dividing it into small areas, not for the claustrophobic when busy but a unique atmosphere.
S. E.
Absolutely adore this pub. One of few brewery pubs left in London. Great atmosphere and decor. Definitely one for the pub lover.
d. s.
Great food and great prices. But they don't have hot sauce. So if you are a person who likes there food spicy be sure to bring your own hot sauce. (#BYOHS)

A stunning piece of London pub history. The best part of the place is the building, but the beer is decent and good value for the area.
R.
Amazing traditional, beautiful pub, segmented into a collection of small, intimate 'rooms'. Standard Samuel Smith's selection at a good price.
S. G.
This is a nice English pub with booths and open seating. The decor is authentic and elaborate with mirror paneling and the bartenders are friendly.
J. K.
Fantastic pub in the heart of London. If you want to know what a traditional pub experience is like, you should definitely check this place out.
A. W.
Nice pint in lovely surroundings, but hold your nose if you need the toilet – the smell is straight out of Victorian times!
J. P.
This is the best pub in London for me. An exquisitely outfitted, genuine London Town pub. Full of character, and with Sam Smith's on tap, how can anyone complain?
P. K.
Standard Sam Smiths - very cheap and uncomplicated. I'll always recommend this place for a quick drink in the area. Not a great amount of seating so does get very cramped after 5pm.
O.
The 2nd best pub in London (Only beaten by Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese). friendly staff and the individual booths can make it a private pleasant experience. Highly recommended
D.
Probably the best Sam Smith pub in central. Stunning interior and a very cosy upstairs lounge bar that's never open (so take advantage when it is!)
D. B.
Great old style pub full of nooks and crannies. Awesome woodwork and tiles throughout. Good Sam Smith house!
T. C.
The Princess Louise is a deliberately congested oldie pub just off the square. I say this as the arrangement of wood paneling around the entrances and bar area make it difficult to walk around but do however create a number of more intimate and quiet small areas for you to relax and chat to a friend.
c. w.
Lovingly restored, but the bathrooms are really begining to smell, they could use a good scrub with tar soap and a bucket of Dettol to get things in order again.
R. N.
Samuel Smith pub. Good atmosphere and great beers. Easy option for evening or afternoon meeting with friends.
D. B.
Cosy and nice place. Looking amazing inside and the staff is friendly and polite. Specially Angy and Vasy ! The food at the restaurant is really good and fairly inexpensive. Highly recommended
L. G.
Nice atmosphere downstairs, but if you can't find a seat, head upstairs for their delicious sandwiches! Just wish they wouldn't rush you so much on the last drink.
D. T.
Excellent beers, great ambience.
J. N.
Decent pub with very cool interior from the Victorian era. Cheap beers. Can get very loud.
D. B.
Samuel Smiths pub. Food is fine. Usually v busy. V cheap. Amazing decor - old gin palace.
O. A. N.
Amazing pub, great staff and very good food and drinks which you can only find in a Samuel Smith pub
G. B.
Excellent place to meet one of the gems of London, the pubs. Good service. I preferred to meet the restaurant rather than the bar.
J. B.
Loved the decor, both the small rooms, glass panels, and tiles. The beer and service were good too.
Good place to drink.
A.
Nice Sam Smith's pub which offers super cheap drinks and a comprehensive menu of food. Really cosy, lots of places to sit!
D. O.
One of the most ornate pub interiors in London. A Samuel Smith pub which means all of the brews are from their brewery in Tadcaster in Yorkshire.
S. M.
Even if it was not a Samuel Smith place, it would be 5* Just Great.
E. A.
Very noisy pub. Small theatre upstairs, saw a good comedy show. Awful veggie burger - Avoid!
M. B.
If you like Sam Smith's this is another fantastic pub they own. Very traditional pub with friendly service
M. E.
Lovely old pub, lots of original features. Friendly staff and good value drinks too 😁
C. B.
Lovely old gin house
Beautiful interior
And fine Sammy Smith's beers
Always worth a pint if you are in the area
T. B.
This is what a pub should be. Great beer, beautiful decor and conversation. No music, no games machines, no TVs with endless music videos or sports. Perfection.
C. N.
Nice pub. Almost cliche, although I get the impression that is deliberate. Service was slow and inattentive, but the Fish & Chips were good.
M. F. A.
wonderful building, very limited wine choice - house white, red or rose. Tried the white a little tart do won't have again
D. W.
Having a few nice pints of Samuel Smith's old brewery bitter and s smiths sovereign. Nice Victorian building with loads of character
M. M.
Well (5 stars) what do you expect from an old bloke? No Wi-fi ☺ and an interior to die for, great selection of beers and one bottled at 9% if you can take it 😂🍺
R.
Good and reasonably priced beer, a very pretty building, normally rather busy and an odd smell of overflowing toilet on my last visit.
A. R.
Like stepping back in time great Sam Smiths AF Brown Ale friendly staff and no phones policy 👍
M. L.
Fantastic decor and reasonably priced beer (though only from the Sam Smiths brewery).
G. J.
Great traditional, well restored pub. Does food and Samuel Smith's. Friendly staff. Need I say more?
J. 1.
One of my favourite London pubs. Classic decor and a good pint, what more do you want? ☺
C. R.
There should be more pubs like this, the booths give it a much cosier feel than in other establishments. Get there before your mates to secure a few seats and they'll love you for it.
K. M.
Great pub, great service, recommended
N. S.
Very imaginative decor which creates the atmosphere of an old-fashioned pub. It's quite successful 'illusion', the place became popular for no time!
M. D.
A really nice old London pub, with all the decor and trimmings that brings. A nice, cool, dark beer while walking towards the west end.
K. T.
A real gem of a pub and a Sam Smith's one at that which means cheaper beer. Can't go wrong at this establishment!
P. J.
One of the best pubs in London. Fantastic Victorian interior, and good value beers as well. Great pub.
H. H.
Beautiful victorian pub. Reasonably priced (for London) trad pub grub and good beer!
D. C.
When you walk in you feel you are in the 19 century, maybe surrounded by Queen Victoria or some poet from 100 years ago.Incredible victorian interior design, good beear and some food to try , get into one of their private cabinets and take a black pint to feel a Sherlock Holmes.
L. W.
Great traditional pub. Was like a taking a trip back in time. Great prices for central London.
A. B.
Sam smith pub, so do not expect your branded drinks, it is all from their own brewery. Really good prices.
K. D.
Lovely OLD pub, with fruit beers and good ales. The crowd is very much men in suits after work, but that changes at the weekend.
P. M.
Great pub. Good food and beer, comfortable atmosphere... Feels like home away from home.
S. D.
Looks like a labyrinth when you get in, with a lot of sections and doors all around the main bar. They have good craft beers, and staff are welcoming. They also have an upstairs restaurant.
F. 2. T.
Great Sam Smith's pub, beautiful interior, good beer. Went on a Friday so was absolutely rammed
J. R.
Great looking traditional Victorian pub with plenty of nooks and crannies. Cheap for central London but gets very busy.
E. K.
The best beer I ever had!
M. M.
A beautifully stylized pub with good beers on draught and reasonably priced food. Staff was friendly and pleasant.
D.
Great ambience, kind staff (we were very sloe and they were really patient with us), good variety of drinks. I am glad we had been there.
M. W.
Fantastic interior. A must for the pub aficionado.
M. O.
Rating for interior, a step back in time. Beer is standard SS's, warning; price increase since reopening.
j. m.
Gotta love a samuel smith pub! Good beer, pretty inside with booths and very reasonable prices for drinks
B. S.
Good pub with Samuel Smith beers. Crowded down stairs but the upstairs dining had tons of space
A. T.
Excellent pub. Interior is so good. Plus my sisters middle name is Louise.
r. g.
Great food, friendly staff, well priced, what more could you ask for? The Princess Louise has got pub managers who really care about running a proper pub!
A. A.
Good place for beers but not so great and very expensive wine. £7 for a glass and tastes funny
D. R.
I do enjoy a Sam Smith's pub, traditional and I like the beers, not to mention the prices.
A. C.
One terrific and remarkable pub! This has been here for years now and it seems that nothing has changed! Their warm service, excellent place, all terrific!
T. C.
Beautiful horseshoe bar , with really good beer . Samuel Smith Brewery pubs are the best
J. D.
A very cosy pub, the barman is very nice and the pub is beautiful in the Victorian's style. And the beer is delicious.
A little expensive perhaps.
M. F.
Good range of tasty beers and good food. Interesting old fashioned layout downstairs with all the wee snug bars.
M. C.
Lovely bottle of NBA. Too many people in the front bar. Glad the alcoves are back, the magnificent toilet still stinks.
D. E.
Restroom upper level could be better serviced. Nice atmosphere is counting. Enjoy it. Cheers
W. F.
Good, cozy pub. Good real ales and lager, and very nicely set up with loads of small booths.
b.
Fantastic Victorian era pub. Nothing special from the outside but I'm glad I looked inside. I'll be going back next time I stay in London
J. H.
Good prices for central London, decent atmosphere. Better if you can get a barside booth, otherwise can be busy on certain days.
S. G.
Great stylish old public house app built in 1872 .Very nice member of staff talked to us about the place ..it was my 1st visit but my son has been there several times before
Lovely place

J. C.
Great layout, like they predicted social distancing
G. T.
Lovely Victorian pub with good beer selections. This historic pub has preserved many of the original snugs and lounge areas
B. M.
Really cool traditional pub. With separated booths at the bar, and all the classics to drink
J. D.
To give a star of 4 out of 5 does not mean this is not a good place. If I would give you a 5 star then that would mean that this place is perfect as the heaven but no one or nothing's perfect so I am giving you a star of 4 to say that you are close to perfect! Keep up!
S. C.
It was a Monday but the staff were prompt ant the beer good if you like a German influence.
e. f.
Sam Smiths pub with splendid Victorian decor and nice stout. One of my favourite spaces.
M. B.
We tried good lager. The room in the second floor big. Lower price than around. All in all the place is good.
M. U.
The authenticity of a 19th century pub. With Samuel Smith's Beers is an beatable combination.
K. H.
Interesting characterful pub in Holborn... reasonable beer prices would be nice if there were more snacks or light meals available
N. D.
Great olde world pub with good beers and a crackling open fire. What more can you ask for on a cold winter's evening?
A. C.
Good beer. Classic pub.
G. E.
