Reviews of St John's Tavern

We loved this place! The food was really nice, packed with flavours. The scotch egg was very tasty! A nice local pub with a great restaurant attached to it. We will be back, for sure!
S. C.
Great menu and fantastic food, great selection of beers and excellent service too. The bar bistro had a great vibe. Definitely heading back there soon!

I've been a few times and absolutely love this place! The restaurant area especially is fantastic. It's a cool space with a relaxed and lively atmosphere, attentive and friendly staff. The food is delicious and reasonably priced, the wine list varied and interesting with a good selection by the glass. I will be back!
V. A.
Pub at front - restaurant at the back. We'll presented and delicious meal - quite surprising for the "pub restaurant". It doesn't come cheap though. Spacious dining room with lots of paintings on the wall (mostly contemporary). Was well impressed
A. P.
Beautiful place, with chairs outside. Some facing the sun, in the afternoon, and some out of it.
The food was incredible and the staff and manager are a delight and incredibly attentive. Definitely worth the hype!
P. C.
Lovely pub, superb drinks on tap, decent burgers, friendly staff!

I enjoyed, with my husband, an absolutely marvellous diner here last night, it was wonderful. The team in the kitchen are evidently very talented, and innovative, and we ate every single bit of the generous portions of food they prepared, even knowing that we´d be full to bursting. The croquets made me feel like I was back in Bilbao, the black garlic that came with the delicious roasted artichoke like I was in Valencia, and the ham hock for sharing like I didn´t want to be anywhere else but eating it "right there, right now"! All was brought to us by a wonderful serving team, who made us feel very welcome and at home in the warm, comfortable, luxuriant feeling dining room. Plus the beer is good, and the value to quality ratio excellent. I had a brilliant time, thanks a million to all involved. we´ll be back I promise.

A great situated pub with AMAZING food. Don’t think I have ever had this quality of food and the selection as well in a pub before. Okay it’s a bit more pricey than usually but the quality is really good. I believe they have a very good cook that is preparing the food with passion and love.
Great selection of beers too again pricey but the atmosphere, the staff - they feel like your new friends ! So friendly. Totally recommend it if you’re in north London :)
Try their monkfish but just make sure you don’t speak through eating and go wash your mouth after as the squid ink on the rice will make your mouth all dark and your friends will most possibly make fun of you. It’s delicious though so try it :)
Thank you for a great Sunday experience !

It was my first time going here, and Sebastian Luce did a really nice with his service. Definitely a must go if you’re in Toronto.

This place is fantastic. Great wait staff, wonderful atmosphere and the food was delicious. We got the Roast dinner and the chicken pie. Everything was fresh and so so tasty. Definitely recommend!

This is God’s own perfect pub for solo dining during the week. Great food, slurp worthy wines and decent service.
R. K.
Great cozy pub. Stumbled upon it by chance and was very impressed by the ambience, the choice of beers and wines, and very friendly and warm staff, and last but not the least, the best burger on this side of London. Totally recommend it. Will surely be coming back again to try the evening Tapas

Good solid food in very spacious and comfortable dinning room. Great vibe and service. Fun place for night out with friends.
A. C.
Excellent food at a decent price. There is a nice range of interesting dishes using some creative ingredients. I particularly enjoyed the Hare Pappardelle. The staff are very friendly and helpful and overall a good experience.
B. S.
Wow, what a roast! Piece of art indeed. Best beef roast I've had so far. Lovely, clean and airy place. Go and have your Sunday roast now! 😀
M. M.
Pub with restaurants standards, minimal deco however cosy. Dog friendly (super plus!).
Excellent place to catch up with friends. During weekdays is even better.
M. D.
Nice pub with great service and good food. The starters, we scallops and a terrine, were delicious and also the main courses were very good. Great selection of beers and wines as well.
M. D.
Beautiful large room with an open fire. Unfortunately too cold. Everybody looked well wrapped up. Very drafty. Good for family lunches but we were given a tall chair that would have been at home in an antiquarian’s shop and didn’t look safe to use.
Only one vegan dish on the menu (pictured). It was very tasty but for such a large menu it seems a bit mean to have just one choice, considering that five people ordered it while we were there. No vegan pudding -only a sorbet but by the time we wanted deserts we were feeling rather cold. No plant milks either, so no coffee to warm us up either.
Service was friendly and efficient. Our waitress was lovely.
D. P.
Great pub with excellent selection of drinks and great quality of food. Came here with friends for the first time pre-Xmas and had a good night.
The fish and chips was perfect!
M. W.
A fantastic meal with wonderful wines and exceptional service. Dog friendly they're even allowed in the dining room. Looking forward to going back soon.

I'm giving this place 5 stars because I believe the current rating to be unfair- it is at least worthy of 4.4 or 4.5. We attended a private event here and I must say that the food, beer and service were all sublime. I really could not have asked for better. For beer lovers it is fantastic to get Pilsner Urquelle and Rot Haus on tap. Would certainly go back here! The only thing I wasn't too keen on is the weird art in the back room.
M. C. S.
Great tavern for a bite and a drink. Food is very good and well priced. Also the service was very welcoming and warm. Everything I would expert from a great tavern.
A.
Bar and restaurant between Tufnell Park and Archway, they serve great drinks and the food (although I've not tried) looks incredible! I've lived in the area for 6 months and this place is rammed every evening and every weekend, they must be doing something right. Sitting outside people watching with a drink is always a winner for me.
S. L.
Stumbled across this by accident and what a win! Lovely pub, house red was really good and best roast beef I’ve had in ages. service was great too - warm and attentive.
C. P.
Enjoyed yet another great family meal here recently - food as fantastic as ever, and service brilliant given these testing times! We have been coming here for years but this meal was perhaps our best yet, so really pleased it's still living up to its billing as the best food in the area. Thanks to all at the SJT (as we call it!) for giving us a very enjoyable and memorable way to ease ourselves back into eating out! Can't wait to return.
S. G.
Really love this place. Every time we come back here the food never fails to impress. Utterly delicious steak and bream. Lovely cosy, warm and laid back atmosphere. Charming staff. Kid and dog friendly but good for adults too.
J. T.
Fabulous laid back pub. Friendly service, great food & dogs welcomed.
S. D.
Classic pub with really nice staff...but also excellent food!
I. C.
Great building returned to its original glory with a superb restaurant. Walls are covered in really interesting pieces of art. Food is good and at reasonable prices. A must visit.
J. D.
Good food, lovely staff and we always feel welcome.
S. L.
The team at St John’s are great, the food is delicious and the atmosphere is fun and relaxed. Also, they are a fantastic wedding venue - we keep hearing from family and friends how much they enjoyed our wedding. So a big thanks to Al and the team :)
L. G.
Really lovely pub with good food and the staff is really lovely and friendly, would definitely recommend a visit.
J. S.
Some great pub food, in a very nice setting and with very friendly staff.
T. O.
Simply incredible pub and restaurant, good food made in house, good range of reasonably priced (for London) drinks, and very generous portions. Staff are friendly and helpful, and the place is truly massive. Seating on the street, two large rooms inside and then a beer garden round back. The menu also changes regularly so if you are local it's great to keep coming back. Can't fault it!
B. F.
Love this little pub. Always quite and enjoy the drinks
R.
Fantastic food. A little on the pricey side, but also justified as soon as you tuck in. Lovely decor, great service and a wonderful experience all-round. Please, if you go on a Sunday, try their Beef roast
H. S.
Great pub, fab food and really good service. Fun, and yet relaxing atmosphere in the bar with variety of good quality beer, well served. Other drinks obviously also available, but I was happy with the ale. The food menu was delightfully different, (I never even knew that fish liver was even a thing, let alone delicious). And the rump steak was quite literally the best I've ever eaten. The deserts, I was informed, were also outstanding. I have to add that this whole experience was made even more wonderful by the service. The waiters were informative, interested and interesting, as well as efficient and utterly charming. I'll be going back. Soon. 😊

The atmosphere was very lively and Sebastian provided very good services.
B. S.
Exceptionally good food and beer, with friendly service and a nice atmosphere. Definitely recommend.

I attended a wedding here on one of the hottest days of the year. I really liked the large dining hall and there were just over 80 people there. Staff were very friendly and attentive. I liked the small patio area outside and really needed it that day! However the heat was oppressive and stifling especially after 10pm when the back doors had to be closed due to rules about noise. Or I think was earlier for doors and patio area closed an hour or so before 12pm. We could still go out to the street to get some air. I know it is expensive to install air conditioning but getting some fans for the room would be a good idea or something similar. Two or three months of the year in London it gets warm and having these amount of bodies and the kitchen working really heats the place up.
But apart from the heat I very much enjoyed the day and there is a large dance space after the tables are cleared away. The food was delicious as I tried my partner's dish too. The kitchen was also supplying us and the bar with service so I was impressed. I will definitely return to St Johns Tavern when down in London again and recommend it.
M. G.
Yesterday was our first time we visited this restaurant. But It is surely not the last time. We passed a splendid evening with the generous service, with the first-rate meal and fine drinks and with the comfortable payment. We will definitely visit there in a short time.

Before covid this was a good gastro pub. The bar area was good. Could do with booth seating around the walls, as the tables and chairs give it a stark feeling.
The restaurant was overpriced with very small portions. Especially the sunday roast
Our group got food poisoning from the oysters last year. Which was very bad.
Now its got no atmosphere!
I popped back last week for 1 drink.
P. F.
Had the most wonderful meal - the fish was so fresh and tasty, wine delicious and pudding a welcome finale to a great meal. Excellent service from welcoming staff - a real gem in North London.
R. W.
A really nice spacious room with an open fire. The food was good but very limited for my vegan friends, only one main option and just sorbet for desert. Proper high chairs needed. The one provided looked like it was borrowed from a museum and was unsafe. Service was good though.
A. B.
Amazing customer services, good beers, the food is outstanding! The managers are absolutely lovely and will make sure that you had a great time at the pub. Also, Reuben in the back bar (the restaurant bar) will make amazing drinks. You should definitely go!
G. E.
Had lunch here. Good service and food. Prices are ok. Nice selection. Calm music in the background.
C. B.
Had a very good time at this restaurant. The waiter helped me with the order, gave me options that were not available at the menu and even accommodated the order so that we could have a wonderful meal. Beef was amazing, fish comes with a tartar sauce that must have to recommend to everyone. Good selection of beers and wines, had a German Lager and a British Pale Ale.
C. D.
Great local with a large selection of ales, food excellent
D. P.
Nice vibe and amazing food. Beer selection below average for the area last time we went but good nonetheless. Sounds like they've since upped the lines and will be looking forward to going again.
T. F.
Nice pub/dinning good craft beer
N. O.
Lovely ambience. Superb service by Marco
C. E.
Beautiful traditional pub with great artwork. The food was reasonable and very tasty. We had a roast. Try their desserts! Only very slight let down, the roast potatoes weren't crispy enough for our liking. Everything else 100%
V. V.
Went on a Sunday during lunch time which was very busy, as expected though. The service was fairly quick and friendly though the atmosphere was a bit frantic. We didn't order the roast but had the homemade pork pies which were delicious. Fair choice of beers etc.
N. W.
Always have great food and good service here. Bar food is lovely, tapas style and those pork scratchings are to die for. The main restaurant is also good with a good selection. The sardines I had as a starter were lovely.
A. B.
Have been going pretty much every week for the last 6-7 years. Beer amongst the best kept real ale that I've tasted in London. Perfect temperature and preparation. Great turnover of fantastic craft cask and keg ales from London brewers and beyond. Kitchen regularly delivers good quality food, but very occasionally can go awry. Staff really friendly and management has been consistent for some time and have created a really good atmosphere. A real asset to Archway.
S. F.
Our favourite pub which is basically an extension of our living room! The staff are incredible and always make sure you are looked after and the food is exquisite...a perfect compliment to the wonderful drinks menu. We will always be back!
A. M.
I am a steak connoisseur and the rump steak at the St. John's is one of the best I've EVER had. It's been consistently the best steak around for as long as I have been going there. I am told that the rest of the menu is amazing too but as the steak is so good I don't think I'll ever not order it when I'm there for food.
The staff are all incredibly helpful and knowledgeable. The usual customers are all very friendly too. I can't recommend the St. John's Tavern enough!
S. Z.
Nice pub with very nice space. The food was ok but disappointing given what we were expecting by reading the menu. One gem though was the bottle of English champagne we ordered that was good and I'm French so not easy to please when it comes to champagne
R. H.
Superb evening. Friendly experienced staff and great food. Lobster linguine is amazing. We will be back.
R. O.
Great looking pub, trendy crowd and decent beers. Good food and well worth stopping in for a cosy dinner. Dog lovers are welcome and the staff are very attentive. Bumped into Dr Who ( Matt Smith) whilst there and my 12 yr old daughter was extremely jealous. 1- nil to Dad!!
S. O.
St John's Tavern is definitely one of the best gastropubs in London. Great customer service, amazing food, lovely atmosphere!
G. N.
Great food, atmosphere and staff.
Had a delicious plate that raises this place above anywhere else in the area.
N. B.
Quality food, good selection of ales / wines. The portions can sometimes be a little mean, given the prices they charge. I've been a number of times and service has been almost flawless. The only exception being New Years Eve, when waitstaff didn't seem to know which way was up!
K. G.
One of the few great gastro pubs in Archway. Great atmosphere with reasonable prices. The selection of food on offer is great. Super delicious too. Not much going on in Junction Road but this gem will attract more to the area. Great for families too.
G. O.
Delicious and beautiful food. Attentive and caring service. Great variety of drinks and beer. Lovely atmosphere. Recently moved to the area and plan on visiting again soon. Quite pricey though.
D. C.
Been going here for years. The food is simply fantastic, always, a cut above the rest. Low turnover of staff suggests that whoever is managing the place has a good spirit and knows how to build a team. Rare gift, and you can feel it in the place. Props to everyone there you're a great team.
B. C.
Great place for a drink, beautiful interior with an excellent selection of beers and friendly service. Large wine list too.
Would give the food a miss, however. Have eaten here a few times and have been disappointed on each occasion. Ordered the chili prawn linguine today which was particularly poor - watery packet prawns in a bland, tasteless sauce. I find it irritating that the food at the St John's is a similar price to the Bull and Last but the quality is not even close.
S. O.
Pretty good quality food with good flavour and price, however very very meat heavy with only one veggie item on the menu!
A. S.
Great food and super lovely and accommodating staff! I tried to organise a client lunch here for a large group and we called in advance to place our order before arriving and ended up having more people joining last minute (13 of us in total at the end). Naresh at St John's Tavern was super nice despite the back and forth we had with numbers and orders. We had great lunch, food was delicious and also leave space for dessert. We will definitely be returning to this place whenever we are doing site tours with Clients in that area.
J. J.
Nice place. Good atmosphere. £8 for 2 devilled prawns takes the Micky though. Even in Soho that would not be right. If they were amazing, then.... But they were average. Staff are nice
A. R.
Great beer in this nice pub.
R. L.
Littlist hidden gem in London
Dont be fooled by the front
Its gorgeous inside with great staff (and the food of course)
Top stuff honest
K. J.
Really very good indeed! Our spontaneous pub sunday dinner turned out a real treat: real top restaurant quality, with a relaxed pub atmosphere. There is a restaurant room here too, which has been great when we've eaten there previously.
T. W.
Fantastic north London staple pub. St. John's has a bar area with bar seating and tables which has a large number of ever changing beers and other drinks on selection. They also offer smaller plates of food at the bar which are usually Spanish based in style. The restaurant has a menu which changes daily but offers high quality freshly prepared food that quite frankly has no equal in any pub I have been to in London. Their Sunday roast is outstanding and never disappoints. The wine selection is vast and comes in glass, bottles or carafes depending on the wine chosen.
Z. C.
Nice pub but was slightly frustrated by the fact that when you go to the bar they tell you it’s table service. That’d be fine if the service was any good but we had to go to the bar and ask for someone to come over every time our glass was empty or we wanted to order food. Yet the 12.5% service charge was still added to the bill.
We ordered a side of greens but it never came, the food wasn’t entirely hot, were given a full pint instead of a half, room temperature was v cold. All small things but if you’re going to charge gastropub prices and service charge then you need to get it right.
The pluses: the food was good, pub has character, they have a good beer selection and the staff are friendly.
C. M.
Very friendly atmosphere. Interesting pictures on the walls which you have to see for yourself! Bar staff went out of their way to be helpful when I didn't have much time to eat. Food was good.
M. B.
Long(ish) standing pub in up-and-coming Archway. Nice beer, decent food. My scotch egg was pretty dry, like it had been kicking around for a while. Nice place to come for a drink with your sensible friends who cant quite afford to rent up the hill in Highgate or down the road in Kentish Town :) :). Never felt like it was going to kick off into a wild night of debauchery.
G. P.
Nice atmosphere. Great food. Good choice of beers. Charming and helpful staff.. would I need anything else? Great job guys
M. H.
I have been to this lovely pub multiple times ! We love it !
We Love the atmosphere at the bar, also strongly recommend the burger !! Delicious !
Dogs are allowed and they even offer water and dog biscuits ! Nice gesture !
We have bring our friends and family there for diner ! Good wine / beer selection !! Good service !
Negative point - The food can be a bit salty on the plate , we had it twice :( !
Still this is one of our favorite pub in the area !!
More places like this will be great around Holloway / Archway !!!
T.
Excellent staff, magnificent food every time come here, been coming here since 1995. Long may it continue.
B. S.
Great for lunch - decent menu, everything very well cooked, and proper home made food. Bar staff are very knowledgeable, and even the playlist is great!
Would definitely recommend.
S. G.
OK pub. A bit gastrointestinal, but good Bloody Mary's. Good wine selection. Good bish. Friendly, helpful staff, happy to let you try their new cask beers before you buy.
T. E.
Sometimes go for lunch there when feeling especially hungry and rich.
Service is great and food usually amazing(although a little variable sometimes), it seems to be mainly inspired by old English recipes. They add a 12.5% SC to the bill. Dinner there can be a bit intimidating with all the beautiful people etc. As long as you have tap water you can get a decent 2 course lunch for £20-22. I don't drink but they seem to have a huge selection of gins.
The Interior of the large dining room is a piece of history. Free newspapers - Times, Guardian etc is a nice touch
J. W.
Here for Sunday dinner. The menu has changed a fair bit since I was here last. Sad to see the double steak / toad in the hole dish gone, same for the creme brulee. Both are reasons why I used to come. That said, the new food is good and the service is excellent.
C. S.
Not been for years. Was fantastic before and still really good. One of the best steaks I've had in a very long time. Very convivial atmosphere contributes to a great evening out.
C. D.
Great tapas and very interesting main courses a bit different to your usual gastro pub or pub and lovely wine ! Would definitely come here again. Service was a bit slow and the waitress we had didn’t understand us very well but I guess she was new but the manager seemed very aware and attentive
